When I’m not making music, I spend a lot of time exploring the world with a camera strapped around my neck. Until this past year, “zooming” to me just meant extending my long lens to focus on a bird or a flower from a distance; now it’s come to mean communing in choppy sentences with a computer screen full of faces in rectangles.

Either way, zooming (or Zooming) is an indispensable way to connect more closely with the world around us....and an easy way to miss out on it.

Fixate on the distant songbird, and we may miss the bobcat crossing the path in front of us. Spend too much time at the computer during this year of retreat and remoteness, and we may forget that there’s a whole colorful, pulsing planet outside our windows (or Windows!) still to be experienced.

We can’t travel for real just yet, but in this program, we invite you to widen your lens, bust out of your pandemic rectangle, and journey with us in song to destinations all around the world.

I’m beyond proud of the work our singers have done this year to keep making music and reaching toward new artistic destinations...even when they’re feeling all Zoomed out. Thank you for joining us, and enjoy the trip!

Singing together....7,000 miles apart There aren’t many benefits of having to hold choral rehearsals online, but here’s a big one: We had the extraordinary opportunity to sing with some incredible musicians from the Republic of Georgia without getting on a plane! On a Saturday morning in January, composer Shergil Pirtskhelani and his colleagues in Zedashe, an ensemble dedicated to the performance and preservation of Georgian music, joined us and members of the University of Chicago Women’s Ensemble on Zoom to teach us one of his own compositions. The experience was facilitated by University of Chicago choral director Mollie Stone and Patty Cuyler through Village Harmony, an organization dedicated to creating authentic cross-cultural musical experiences. On the facing page, Shergil offers some background on his composition; on the following page, you’ll hear our virtual-choir rendering of this beautiful and melancholy song.

We’re “baque”....with Men in Blaque!

We were all set to perform an all-Brahms program with our friends Men in Blaque (Joseph Huszti and Benjamin Johns, codirectors) last March, but COVID shut down live music just days before the concert.

We’ve dusted off a few of the songs we learned for that concert, and we’re pleased to present them here in virtual-choir style!

These three selections come from Brahms’ Zigeunerlieder. “Lieder” means “songs”; “Zigeuner” is usually translated as “gypsy,” though we now recognize that word as an outdated, pejorative term for the Romani people of the Balkans and central Europe.

In Brahms’s 19th-century western-European world, the imagined Romani lifestyle—peripatetic, passionate, free-wheeling—was a popular and seductive topic for composers and poets, who enthusiastically wrote tunes and lyrics that purported to capture “Zigeuner” culture. Most, predictably, were exoticized and romanticized to a regrettable degree. (Listen for the extra-lusty swings of emotion in these songs!)

This sort of cultural appropriation, all too common in the choral repertoire, demands that we consider whether the virtues of the music outweigh the somewhat problematic circumstances of its creation. We believe Brahms’ music is worth the discussion and worth the performance, and we’re grateful to Men in Blaque (and, of course, Janelle Kim on the famously, fiendishly difficult piano part!) for helping us salvage some part of our cancelled concert!

Two songs from the Americas Few other living Cuban musicians have matched Tania León’s achievements as a composer, a conductor, a teacher, and an advocate for the arts both at home and around the world. “La guitarra” is the last of three songs in her set Rimas tropicales (“tropical rhymes”); the festive text-painting, as performed here by our “choir of Megans,” conjures both the sound of a guitar and the mood of a celebration.

On the following page, Sarah, Lizz, and Janelle combine talents— digitally—to perform “Pueblito, mi pueblo,” a famous nostalgic gem from Argentine composer Carlos Guastavino. You can hear the wistful sighs of homesickness and longing written into the vocal parts as the poem’s speaker recalls her faraway homeland.

Linda Hirschhorn: I Have a Million Nightingales Claire Stoneman, Megan Waters, Felicia Lee, Brittany Chen, and Amanda Bistolfo Tasha Miller, director • Filmed and edited by Nathan Staph and Michael Kroh

Singer/songwriter Linda Hirschhorn specializes in creating and performing music that reflects her Jewish upbringing, and this brief minor-key work exemplifies two of her interests: writing canons, and writing for women’s voices. The text is adapted from the all too timely words of exiled Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish (19422008), whose poem “Defiance” ends with “I shall proclaim in my detention cell, / in the bathroom, / in the stable, / under the lash, / manacled, / in the violence of chains, / that a million birds / on the branches of my heart / are singing fighting songs.”

This performance was prepared and directed by OCWC Conducting Intern Tasha Miller, who could not have imagined when she accepted her position in the summer of 2019 that she would be spending two such adventurous seasons with the OCWC. We stand in awe of her resourcefulness and resilience!

I have a million nightingales on the branches of my heart, singing “Freedom.”

East, West, and close to home Over the years, the OCWC’s membership has included singers from around the world, and they’ve been gracious and generous in sharing their music, languages, traditions, and potluck dishes with the rest of the chorus! On the next pages, two of our current singers will introduce you to songs from their countries of origin.

First, alto Mariko Takahashi illuminates the poetry of the charming Japanese children’s song “Hotaru koi” (“Ho, firefly”), performed by the chorus in virtual-choir style and produced by OCWC member Jessica Cosley. The repeated “ho, ho, ho” canon of the song’s refrain summons the image of fireflies illuminating one after another in the dark.

Next, alto Boska Dzida directs a small ensemble (which she also prepared and rehearsed, chiefly via Zoom!) in two gentle lullabies—originally in-

tended for Christmastime, but captivating year-round— from her native Croatia.

A memorable night in Wales Our OCWC trip to England and Wales in July 2015 was full of magic moments, but none was more special than the night we sang an outdoor concert alongside the Chepstow Male Voice Choir at the 11th-century Chepstow Castle. The wind whipped and the seagulls screamed, but when Claire sang the traditional Welsh lullaby “Suo Gân” (in flawless Welsh!), the audience fell silent...and then erupted in tears and cheers afterward. Those of us who were there will never forget it, and we’re glad to recapture a sliver of that memory here.

The COVID era has brought out some truly inspiring artistic creativity and technological wizardry from our singers! Soprano Nancy Burke enlisted her brother David to assist her in the production of this delightful video.

“Chattanooga Choo Choo,” originally written in 1941 for Glenn Miller and his orchestra, was a featured number in the movie Sun Valley Serenade, a number-one hit on the Billboard charts, and the first song to earn a gold record for topping one million sales. The song has been recorded dozens of times in dozens of versions; Nancy’s performance is inspired by that of the famous Andrews Sisters.

The lyrics were inspired by a real-life train called The Birmingham Special, upon which the composers, it’s said, were traveling when they wrote it.

They take some liberties with the route and its timing, but that’s one of the beauties of imaginary journeys—no wrong turns and no delays!

There are a few songs that have become part of our collective soundtrack over the years, and “I Will Wind Thee In My Arms” has traveled with us through joys and heartbreaks. We’ve sung it for memorial services when we’ve lost members of the OCWC family; we sang it in Bristol Cathedral on our 2015 United Kingdom tour to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the London Underground bombings; and we offer it here as a reflection upon a year of finding light, laughter, and love even amid great loss.

This video combines a live 2015 performance of the song with videos and photos contributed by our singers to represent the moments of cheer and comfort we’ve found this year, to thank the people and pets who have gotten us through the dark days, and to remember the loved ones who have left us during the pandemic.

Are we there yet?

As you’ve probably heard by now, we thought we’d be spending this spring preparing for our Carnegie Hall debut. That was just one of the many plans and dreams that were spoiled this past year.

But as our nation moves toward health and normalcy, we’re thrilled to announce that our New York trip and our Carnegie debut are back on the calendar for June 2022! Assuming that the nationwide health outlook is positive and travel is safe, we’ll take the stage for a featured program of our own, followed by a performance of Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass (under the baton of OCWC Artistic Director Eliza Rubenstein, making her third Carnegie appearance as a conductor), for which we’ll be joined by an array of other choruses and a professional orchestra.

You’ll hear lots more about our New York adventure in the months ahead!

It’s our hope that we’ll be singing in person again by fall, and we’ll be looking for talented new singers to join us!

If you’re a woman who has choral/vocal experience, reads music, loves a challenge, and enjoys the company of other like-minded women, we’d love to meet you! (Even if you’re not a prospective OCWC member yourself, you may know someone who is!)

We normally rehearse on Tuesday evenings in Newport Beach.

Auditions are held in August by appointment, and complete audition information for the 2021-22 season will be finalized during the summer and posted at ocwomenschorus.org.
