None of us pictured a holiday season quite like this one!

But the OCWC has never been afraid to try something new, and this year, like choruses all around the world, we’ve been challenged to find innovative ways to keep the music alive even while we can’t be together.

Naturally, we love choral singing because of the community, musical and personal. Our current “virtual reality” means we haven’t heard our voices tune a chord or coordinate a cut-off all together since last March, and that’s tough. But our members have risen to the occasion, overcome the technological (and psychological!) obstacles of creating choral music individually from our homes, and remained committed to strengthening our OCWC family, singers and supporters alike.

We hope you’ll enjoy the result, and we’re honored to bring some of our music into what we hope will be a healthy, happy holiday season. We’re grateful to all the health-care providers, scientists, and leaders who are working hard to keep us safe as we work toward a return to the lives and the choirs we miss, and we’re grateful to you for being part of our OCWC community through every season.

The program includes a combination of virtual-choir videos (created from individual recordings created by our singers at home), live performances filmed in a safe and socially-distanced recording session, and performances created at home by several of our singers and guest artists.

William Walker’s spare and serene tune, a souvenir from the early decades of the United States, speaks of growth in the cold and hope in the dark. It’s a fitting message of resilience during an unconventional and austere holiday season.

The hills are bare at Bethlehem; no future for the world they show.

Yet here new life begins to grow: from earth’s old dust a greenwood stem.

The stars are cold at Bethlehem, no warmth for those beneath the sky; yet here the radiant angels fly, and joy burns new, a fiery gem.

The heart is tired at Bethlehem; no human dream unbroken stands.

Yet here God comes to mortal hands, and hope renewed cries out: “Amen!”

Something old, something new At right, Claire and Shauna perform one of several versions of the medieval “Cherry Tree Carol,” with its lilting melody and its cheeky text: Newly expectant father Joseph replies to his wife’s request for cherries by suggesting, rather rudely, that whoever got her pregnant should be the one to pick her fruit...and to his amazement, that’s what happens, though hardly in the way he expects.

On the following page, Sarah, Shauna, and Janelle perform “Noël Nouvelet,” a 15th-century French carol that marvels throughout at the novelty of the Christmas story.

Following that, Sarah directs a chamber ensemble in an arrangement of “Nova, Nova,” one of the most famous medieval Christmas tunes. The title literally means “News, news,” and the next line—“Ave fit ex Eva”—is a play on words: Since “ave” (“hail,” as in “hail Mary”) is a palindrome of “Eva” (“Eve”), the text means that out of the Biblical story of Eve has come the new, more joyous story of Mary.

I met a maiden in a place; I knelt down before her there and said: “Hail Mary, full of grace.”

When the maiden heard tell of this, she was truly afraid, I wis, and thought that she had done amiss.

Then said the angel: “Fear not thou, for ye be conceived with great virtue, whose name shall be called Jesu.”

It is not yet six weeks agone since Elizabeth conceived John as it was prophesied before.

Then said the maiden: “Verily, I am your servant right truly; behold the handmaid of the Lord.”

In 2010, the OCWC became the first organization to commission a work (“Tribute”) from a young composer named Dale Trumbore. In the years since, Dale has become one of the most celebrated and respected choral composers in the nation, and we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to commission her again.

This work was conceived specifically for the virtual-choir medium, and it’s ingeniously designed to offer different levels of participation for singers in different circumstances, from a simple spoken-word part to a complex solo quartet.

Maya Jackson’s text was written in the midst of the past summer’s unrest, as the nation reckoned, more visibly than usual, with its past and present legacies of racism and police brutality. The poet’s reflection on the heirlooms of security and pain that Black women give and receive is both tender and wrenching. We are honored to present the world premiere of this work.

People are always handing me things Cups, keys, pots, pain. Paradigms of blindness.

Trauma. Clutter. Violence.

Handled things.

You’d be surprised By the things people hand over.

I guess I’m a person who looks like they can hold a lot.

I guess.

I’ve learned memory outweighs most things [Matter made of wood. glass. Plastic. Rope.]

Memory outweighs those things.

These sensations that blister like something too hot to hold Or peel white right into the hand like a bright lightbulb These emotions that burn brown into the skin like a hot comb Feelings, wide like constellations, can be lost and found.

Like keys. Or Hope. Or Home.

Yes. You’d be surprised by the things people hand over.

Safe at home and still singing Singers always find a way to make music! At right, Megan uses some digital magic to sing all the parts of a carol arrangement by one of OCWC’s favorite composers, San Francisco-based Kirke Mechem.

On the next page, Autry—an OCWC alum who’s been joining us late into each Tuesday night from her new home in Virginia!—performs a solo motet by the early Italian Baroque master Claudio Monteverdi.

Monteverdi was no stranger to doing “something new”; he often wrote in a text-driven style known today as the stile moderno, and his music is filled with novelty and innovation alongside its beauty and craft.

One silver lining of a pandemic is the ability to work virtually with guest artists across the country! Virginia-based soprano Marlissa Hudson is a favorite collaborator, and she’s come a long way since she and Eliza sang in the same children’s choir and attended the same school in St. Louis, Missouri.

Marlissa has been described as a “superb lyric coloratura” (St. Louis Post-Dispatch) with a “lovely shimmer of her upper register” (Washington Post). She made her professional debut as a student, performing “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess with the Baltimore Symphony Pops Orchestra.

Marlissa has been featured in Bulgaria and Paraguay, and has collaborated with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, National Philharmonic, VocalEssence, and 92nd Street Y. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2017, performing Kirke Mechem’s Songs of the Slave with members of the OCWC under the direction of Eliza Rubenstein.

Unity, even when we’re apart This choral season and this holiday season, we’ve all been missing the company and the community of our friends, family, and fellow singers.

At right, Lizz and Janelle perform one of the best-known and best-loved “wistful Christmas” songs: “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” from the classic 1944 Judy Garland film Meet Me in St. Louis.

Next, our chamber ensemble performs “Umoja,” a canon by Los Angeles composer Zanaida Robles. The word “umoja” means “unity” in Swahili and is the first of the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa; it’s also the name of an all-female, matriarchal village in Kenya. Brandi, our soloist, was planning to sing with us in person, until (in true 2020 fashion) a potential coronavirus exposure at work kept her home. We’re grateful to her and to our video team for her virtual participation!

Harpist Brian Noel has been one of our favorite partners in music-making for many years, and there’s nothing quite like the sound of the harp to put us in the holiday mood (especially when it’s played by a guy whose last name is “Noel”!).

Brian took up the harp while serving as assistant principal flutist with the United States Military Academy Band in the 1980s. “There was a harp that no one had played for many years sitting in the supply room,” he says, “and with my piano background and exposure to the instrument playing weddings and such, I thought it would be great to take some lessons and hopefully start playing with the Band.”

Today, he’s the principal harpist for two orchestras in southern California, and he freelances regularly as a soloist and chamber musician.

“Hold On” is a song that’s traveled with the OCWC through nearly a decade of concerts, tours, triumphs, and challenges. Like many African-American spirituals, its text speaks of persistence and belief in the face of trauma and hardship; during the era of slavery, lines like “If you want to go to Heaven, let me tell you how” likely functioned both as spiritual guidance (a path to the afterlife) and literal directions (a route to the North). The upbeat music mustn’t obscure the pain and urgency of the history that underlies it.

This song spoke to many of us this year, so we’re offering it to you here in a live performance from several seasons ago, combined with new images of the stories and struggles that have occupied our hearts and minds in 2020. We recognize the pain of our nation and our neighbors, and we sing in hope of a better, brighter future.

Choir in quarantine We were supposed to be singing at Carnegie Hall this season....and instead we’re singing into smartphones in our living rooms for our pets!
