She’s 52 and talks about how she is asked by many groups to talk about her “amazing life” and “profession representing women.”

She’s quick to poo-poo the “unique” biography, but she realizes the aquarium/zoo field is quickly being dominated by female professionals, volunteers and staff.

She also honors coworkers and board members associated with this landmark. Did I say volunteers?

That’s more than 400 aquarium volunteers ranging in age from 15 to 90.

All volunteers have been in limbo from doing their magic at the aquarium since COVID-19 lockdown. More than 80 percent of staff has been furloughed, though still paid through a Paycheck Protection Program loan.

She’s jazzed about even the smallest details — like a new backlit glass design for the front entrance — showing me a rendition of the aquamarine glass sculpture from Bullseye Glass Company out of Portland. “It represents beach glass.”

It’s a simple formula — a family drives in from the Valley with the kids; they have this amazing view of Yaquina Bay and the bridge; then they come upon this inviting and lush entrance way and path; and they leave all their worries in the car.

More ADA-accessible walkways and paths are also part of the design improvements.

All those details add up to a 39-acre wonderland, with a coastal forest landscape design, a new and improved great hall with a jellyfish exhibit and articulated whale skeleton; a modernized café through new furnishings and facelift; and a playground that includes more climbing structures, an eagle’s nest and better interpretative signage.

“In our zoo and aquarium industry, we are all about getting kids outside and off their

phones,” she emphasizes.

For the two or three hours a family might spend at the aquarium, proverbial lightbulbs go off in young people’s minds. Families share knowledge in an unstructured but intentional space. Newport and surrounding locations realize a huge economic boost — an annual economic impact of over $100 million.

The woman at the helm, Carrie Lewis, who was raised in Maui and came on board to help with crisis communication when Keiko was at the aquarium has been CEO for a decade.

Don’t be. Paddleboarding adventures await, in Manzanita

I have tried many things over the years for stories in the Oregon Coast TODAY, including strapping on a pair of roller skates and practicing for a few months with a roller derby team, getting into a tiny plane and looking down on our beautiful coastline from miles above, and even trying a pole dancing workout when that was the next big thing. But in general, once the ink is dry on the story, I move on.

Not so with stand-up paddle boarding, which I liked enough to incorporate into my outdoor fitness routines. Though I could soon get around without falling into the water I suspected I could still use some tips to improve my technique, so I enlisted the help of certified instructor and overall badass Janice Gaines-Ehlen of SUP Manzanita, who, at 60, is fitter than most people half her age.

Janice and her husband and business partner, Michael Ehlen, teach SUPing on the relatively safe and undeniably lovely Nehalem River.

“It’s as simple to learn as a walk in the park,” Janice said. “It’s way easier to learn than how to ride a bike. Only about one in every 10 of my students even fall into the water during a lesson, and that’s usually because they get distracted by something like a bald eagle flying overhead so stop focusing on their balance.”

After having done it on my own three whole times, I was secretly hoping Janice would compliment me on my technique, but let’s just say, she had notes. I was apparently holding my paddle in such a way that I was missing a great deal of the possible power in my stroke. Once I went out on my own after our lesson and used my improved paddling prowess, I was noticeably

sore in my triceps and back muscles, which is a good thing.

“One thing that’s great about SUPing is that you can make it anything you want,” Janice said.

“You can meditate on the board, pull over and take a nap, even do yoga. But it can also give you a killer workout.”

One of the questions Janice often gets is if students need to be in good physical shape to take a lesson with her.

“We welcome all ages and all levels of fitness,” she said. “You don’t even have to know how to swim. You do need to be able to kneel, stand and paddle, but there is no pressure to do anything you are not comfortable with.”

The versatility of the sport also makes it the perfect recreation for people with extra physical challenges.

“I’ve had people with all varieties of physical disabilities,” Janice said. “I even taught a blind woman and she did an amazing job and had a fantastic time.”

Harder, but not impossible to work with are mental challenges.

“I don’t recommend trying it if you are truly terrified of water,” Janice said. “But if you are ready to face that fear this is a great way to do it. I’ve definitely worked with people on this issue and it can be very rewarding. I had a girl recently who had some breakthrough moments on overcoming her fear during a lesson and the looks on her face were priceless.”

Trusting the equipment helps, and according to Janice one seemingly small thing makes a big impact.

“The most important thing if you are in conditions that could change is that you should always be wearing a leash that’s attached to the board,” she said. “That is your most effective floatation device, and being attached to it can give you that extra level of confidence.”

on the cover Janice has been a trainer for more than half her life and has professionally taught swimming, skiing and competitive cycling. She has also been a sports massage therapist for more than 20 years, focusing on injury rehabilitation and chronic pain injury.

Her personal sports resume includes cycling with a gold medal-winning team representing the USA in the Olympics, alpine skiing at the professional level and winning an Oregon state body-building championship.

And though she gets a great deal of joy from putting more people on SUPs on flat water, her happy place is on the waves.

“I absolutely love surfing on a SUP,” she said.

“It gives you a whole different feeling and vantage point than regular surfing or river SUPing. All of our beginner lessons are on the river, but if people are ready to progress to the next level and want to do a private lesson in the ocean, I’m open to it.”

Further south in Lincoln City, SUP lessons and equipment rental are available at Safari Town Surf Shop, which just recently celebrated 30 years in business. Tony and Jeanne Gile’s familyowned-and-operated business now offers a growing list of services, including a skateboarding

department, kayak tours and fat-tire bike rentals.

Safari Town is still a family business, with two of the three Gile kids, Kevin and Kendal, working in the shop or outdoors as instructors.

“We actually call we do tours instead of lessons,” Jeanne said. “We take people out on Devils Lake, so it’s kind of a combination lesson and guided experience of the lake.”

The tour lasts about one and a half hours but the equipment rental is for 24 hours, so you can play around on your own and perfect your technique before returning the board. For more information, go to safaritownsurf.com.

The other morning, I SUPed on the Siletz River and was the only person around for the entire hour of my session. Swallows flitted and swooped like little sky clowns over my head and, every once in a while, a fish would jump out of the water and complete an arc before plunging back into the river. The light was soft and the moss-covered rocks and thick stands of mixed evergreen and deciduous trees lining the route reflected in an almost perfect mirror image on the still water.

Though I have yet to train Scout to be an onboard dog, with a thermos of hot coffee strapped to the deck and some ’70s one-hit wonders pumping through my headphones, it made for an almost perfect morning.

The world is your oyster with online options from The Bijou Theatre

Lincoln City’s Bijou Theatre is currently unable to provide the big-screen experience fans of the art house theatre come for.

But according to owner Betsy Altomare, a smaller screen doesn’t have to limit your entertainment experience. Now more than ever, actually, the small screen can open the world to you.

“In this time of staying home or limiting travel there are endless things you can look at on your computer,” she said. “And if you send them to your television you can really enjoy them so much better.“ Beyond the movies and TV shows that people are used to seeing on their TV screens, more and more places are adding content to provide a virtual experience.

“You can take tours of some of the big museums without even leaving your house,” Altomare said. “Places like the Louvre, the Smithsonian, the Vatican, even NASA has something now for people to enjoy. You can browse catalogs and watch TED talks; the list is long and getting longer all the time.”

And Altomare said audiences don’t have to settle for watching these virtual treats on tiny screens.

“A lot of folks, especially older ones, don’t know that there are a lot of ways to get from the computer to the TV,” she said. “For example, even though you can’t go wirelessly from an Apple device to a non-Apple device, you can still go by using a cable that can be found at most stores that sell electronics. I have an android and I just downloaded the ‘Smart Things’ app so I can easily connect my devices.”

If you still just want to watch movies but have used up all the options available to you that have any appeal, some movies that would have been on the big screen are available by streaming from the Bijou’s website at cinemalovers.com.

“We have new releases that are not available anywhere else,” Altomare said. “Our site has eight movies we are playing right now. You click on the poster to see the trailer and if it looks good, you can purchase it right there — it’s just like buying something on Amazon. We get a percent of the ticket sales

so it’s a great way to support your favorite local art movie house.”

Looking for recommendations? Altomare is happy to give a few.

“We’re excited right now about the the Ella Fitzgerald documentary, ‘Just one of Those Things,’ and ‘Shirley Jackson’ starring Elizabeth Moss,” she said. “‘St. Frances’ was probably one of my favorites that we’ve had lately and that’s still available. We usually add new titles every week.”

Looking for an easy present that doesn’t require donning a mask and keeping your distance from other shoppers?

“You can pay for something and put in someone else’s email address for the link,” Altomare said. “These are great for kidswe have grandparents that do it for their grandkids. And, for all these cat lovers out there, we have the ‘Quarantine Cat Film Fest’ going on right now.”

If you still aren’t sure how to navigate the constantly changing world of streaming, the Bijou is here to help.

“There is a whole troubleshooting page on our website that walks people through how to do it,” Altomare said. “They can even send us an email through our website if they are still confused after reading all of the instructions, and the great thing about that is once people learn how to do this streaming, they can do all the other things I mentioned.

The TV stations all have streaming sites now, too. Basically, you no longer have to restrict yourself to a computer.”

There is one thing all the cables and apps in the world can’t recreate though, and that is movie theater popcorn.

“We can’t open the theater to the public to watch movies yet, but we still open from 6 to 7 pm for popcorn hour,” Altomare said. “We’ll be opening on a limited basis once Phase 2 rolls around, but until then we really enjoy getting to see some of our loyal customers when they come get a tub of buttery (or not) popcorn. We’ll even bring it out to people if they don’t want to get out of their car.”

Hit the road to Manzanita

Don your most colorful mask and enjoy some beautiful art as the Hoffman Gallery reopens to the public on Thursday, July 9, with a show featuring paintings and prints by Christine Harrison and Jenny Stanley and ceramics from Hoffman Center Clay Studio artists.

Christine Harrison is a Tillamook based painter, printmaker and sculptor and a founding member of Art, Accelerated, a non-profit artist-based organization promoting the arts in Tillamook County with exhibitions, performances and education programs for youth and adults.

Harrison received the 2013 Oregon Coast Art Council Mid-career Artist award, which included an exhibit of paintings and pastels at the Newport Visual Art Center.

Her most recent project, three large cement cow sculptures prominently displayed at three sites in Tillamook County, were a joint venture with artist Heidi Clemens and the Ford Family Fund Tillamook Leadership Candidates of 2010.

Her works have been shown in solo and group exhibitions around the country, and she was a member of the artist cooperative, Nanny Goat Hill Gallery in San Francisco and the SFMOMA Artist’s Galley. In 2016, she was an artist in residency at Scoula Internazionale di Grafica Veniza, Italy.

Born in Oakland, California, Harrison lived in the greater Bay Area until 2000, where she received a BA in Fine Arts from San Francisco State University and an MFA with Distinction from California College of the Arts.

Tuesday nights are blowing up in Lincoln City

Stanley majored in Fine Art in college and has studied throughout the United States and Europe. In addition, she is an award-winning illustrator of children’s books, currently published by Barron’s of New York.

Her paintings can be found in private and corporate art collections throughout the United States and Europe.

The ceramics on display will be handmade, wheel thrown, sculptural, ornamental or functional in construction and were inspired by the natural world.

No more than five guests are allowed in the gallery at any one time. Masks will be required and can be supplied upon request.

The Hoffman Center is located at 594 Laneda Avenue. in Manzanita and is open Thursday through Sunday from 1 to 5 pm.

Now that we’ve made it through the day of making things go bang, the Lincoln City Cultural Center is offering up some TNT. The center will be keeping the doors open late every Tuesday through September to allow the community to enjoy a brand new, mask-required evening market.

It’s called the Tuesday Night Thing, and it promises to be a collection of food, arts and crafts that will change with the state and county guidelines as well as the season.

Hours for the TNT are 4 to 8 pm, with the first hour (4-5 pm) reserved for the most vulnerable populations.

“In other cities, Tuesday might seem like an odd time for an event,” said Niki Price, cultural center executive director. “But we are a tourist town, and Tuesday night IS the weekend for many people in the hospitality industry.

We’re all looking for ways to enjoy ourselves while we keep our distance, and we thought that an outdoor market might be just the thing.”

While taking care to observe the latest guidelines, the cultural center intends to offer a variety of vendors including baked goods, soaps, produce, hand-crafted gifts and hot food options. Attendance will be limited to ensure the safety of both vendors and patrons. Nonprofit booths are welcome. Live music may be introduced when mandates allow.

“The Tuesday Night Thing is a new program, inspired by the need for safe outdoor entertainment for Lincoln City residents as well as the need for vendors to reach their customers,” Price said. “Management will be making the best decisions we can, based on the best information available. We look forward to creating a fun, casual evening market for our community to enjoy.”

The Tuesday Night Thing will be practicing General Operations Requirements as outlined by the Oregon Farmers Market Association. These guidelines can be found at www.oregonfarmersmarkets.org/covid-19.

If you are one of the millions of people who helped Pluto the dog “Break the Internets” while he explained COVID-19 to the two-leggeds, the next members’ show at the Lincoln City Cultural Center’s Chessman Gallery, “Animal Influence in the time of COVID,” opening Friday, July 10, is for you.* “For many people that have been isolated at home during this crisis, having animals in their lives has been a lifesaver,” said gallery director Krista Eddy. “The interpretation of this theme is left up to each artist to decide in their own creative, inspirational way. We are excited to see how animals have played a part in the COVID experience of our talented member artists.”

The cultural center has a proud tradition of honoring member artists with a show during the height of the summer season so that visitors from near and far can see some of the amazing, home-cooked artwork made by the local arts community.

“There are about usually about 60 artists at these annual member shows,” Eddy said.

“It’s important to note that this is not just for people who are established artists; it’s meant to give an opportunity for any kind of artistic expression from any of our members as a way for us to showcase all the different forms of creativity we have right here in our community.”

Though pets are oft-mentioned as providing therapeutic influences on their humans’ lives, they are not alone.

“Some people have mentioned that the change in our regular routines has given them more time to appreciate nature,” Eddy said.

“There have been many more birds this year, for example. We just really wanted to inspire people to notice how important animals can be in our lives; how they affect our spirits.

People can do things that either aren’t part of the theme and we honor that, but usually most people do stick to it.”

COVID-19 has also influenced the annual opening reception, usually held at the gallery on the first night of each new show.

This will be the second art show opening of the year where Eddy and cultural center Executive Director Niki Price will hold a

live virtual tour viewable Friday, July 10, at 5 pm on center’s Facebook page, Facebook@ lincolncityculture.

“Niki and I do a tour of the studio,” Eddy said. “We’ll talk about the show and the different artists. I try to be a little goofy because we want it to be fun to watch.”

Two of the artists included in this year’s show are people who already have or are about to hoof it out of the area.

“One of the showing artists is Jennifer Norman who has been very involved with the cultural center over the years,” Eddy said. “She is moving away and we are very sad, so we are doing a special area for her if people want a chance to see her work before we lose her.

Ralph Elliott was a local photographer that has recently moved, so this is possibly a last chance to see his work too.”

Though the COVID crisis is still ongoing, Eddy said this show can provide a nice respite.

“We think that coming in to view the

Chessman Gallery is a safe thing to do right now,” she said. “You don’t have to touch surfaces, you don’t even have to talk to anyone; you can just look around and be inspired.

You can even come away with some ideas for projects of your own, so we really encourage this as a safe activity for people who just need to get out of the house for a bit.”

“Animal Influence” will run through Monday, Aug. 10, at the Chessman Gallery, located inside the Lincoln City Cultural Center at 540 NE Hwy. 101.
