J

anuary brings some of my favorite adventures, like the Siletz Bay Splash and the Resolution Run and Polar Bear Plunge, two cold season adventures featured on page 8.

Another is a group run that only trail runners will understand. It is a “fat ass” race, where there is aid but no fees or awards. As if the name were not already awkward enough, AI, in its infinite wisdom, decided to change the listing in my calendar from “Perpetua Fat Ass” to “Perpetual Fart Ass.” I received some nice notes regarding last week’s editorial, where I sang the praises of print media. The other promise we have here at the TODAY is that humans are responsible for our text. Until AI can provide text that wouldn’t make me have to explain myself at parties, we will continue that pledge.

Brie with Cranberry Butter and Pistachios Ingredients: Directions: 1 bag (12 ounces) fresh cranberries 1/2 cup water 1/2 cup maple syrup 6 tablespoons brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 package (5-8 ounces) brie cheese, with herbs or plain (round or wedge) 1/2-1 tablespoon coarsely chopped pistachio nuts Serve with thinly sliced toasted baguette or crackers

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F Combine cranberries and water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer. Cover and cook for 5 minutes - the cranberries will pop!

Using an immersion blender, puree until smooth.

Add syrup, brown sugar and cinnamon and stir to combine.

Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer coating from the cheese. for 10 minutes until mixture thickens.

here’s an electric energy in the kitchen at Newport’s Clearwater Restaurant these days. New Executive Chef Johnny Nunn has infused the beloved bayfront restaurant with fresh inspiration and creative momentum — energizing both the staff and menu.

Dive into 2025 Brace yourself for the New Year with coastal cold-water dunks

P

erhaps you like to gather a few good friends to start the new year with a cold-water dunk. But if you yearn for a larger gathering, three Central Coast events can fit the bill.

Following are a few options for collective chilliness, from a dip into a shallow bay in Lincoln City to a run into the ocean in Manzanita, both on New Year’s Day; and, on Saturday, Jan. 5, a race with a finish line that allows racers to jump into the waves for a grand finale.

Siletz Bay Splash Ring in the New Year with a chilly plunge into Siletz Bay. Afterwards, warm up with hot chocolate, pastries and a bonfire.

The well-attended splash begins at 10 am at the beach near the Taft Dock at the end of 51st Street in Lincoln City.

Manzanita Polar Plunge With the theme being a nod to the Dr. Seuss quote, “If you never have you should, these things are fun and fun is good,” Polar Plunge 2025 will once again see crowds of

people heading down Neahkahnie Beach into the ocean.

Some, including plunge founder Janice GainesEhlen, will be in costume. To honor the theme, Gaines-Ehlen starts every new year in a Dr. Seuss outfit, but any costume will do and help contribute to the convivial tone of the event.

Another favorite feature of the dunk is the huge bonfire to gather around to get dry and share stories.

The plunge will begin at roughly 11 am, but with how large the event has become, Gaines-Ehlen recommends arriving early.

Newport Resolution Run and Polar Bear Plunge For a different kind of adventure, line up for the Ardor Adventures Resolution Run and Polar Plunge on Saturday, Jan. 5. The run distances are 5K, 10K and half marathon, all starting at the South Beach State Park’s Day Use parking lot and finishing at the shoreline

of the Pacific Ocean. At the finish line, celebrate your achievement by choosing your next adventure: take the plunge into the icy waters or stay dry and bask in the triumph of your run.

The plunge is not an organized event, it is just a great way to finish a run, and the photographer will be on hand to capture images of each watery finish for those that choose to plunge.

Whether or not you dive in, you can enjoy the coziness of the large heated tent and hot coffee and hot chocolate.

Registration includes a finisher’s medal, post-race food and beer and photos.

Chip timing means live results for friends and family to follow while you race.

Packet pick-up is on race day starting at 8 am. Start times are staggered from 9 am and 9:30 am at the South Beach State Park Day Use parking lot.

Chef Paul Grossi brings Italian flair to Joe’s Table

nside the restaurant doors, the setting is stylishly relaxed, and diners at Joe’s Table at Pioneer Joe’s, formerly Oshen’s Chophouse, will be forgiven if they kick back, let out a deep exhale and recline into the comfortable, well-padded chairs. The atmosphere of relaxation, a sense of feeling at home and unhurried while enjoying excellent food: it’s all part of the experience that Joe’s Table aims to deliver.

“When you come in here, we want you to lose the pressure of outside life, have some moments of respite from everything else that’s going on in your world and really enjoy yourself,” said Executive Chef Paul Grossi, who has helmed the kitchen at the creatively casual bistro for the past year. “It’s all about creating an overall enjoyable atmosphere. We want people to feel at home while they experience something memorable. When people come in and spend their hard-earned money here, we want to make sure that it’s well-spent.”

Located in the Marketplace at Salishan, the restaurant draws a mix of residents and Oregon Coast visitors. But Grossi and his partners are attuned to local tastes.

“People around here are looking for something soulful, comfort food with great attention to detail,” Grossi said.

“They’re looking for food that isn’t cookie-cutter or runof-the-mill.” The menu at Joe’s Table’s reflects Grossi’s culinary search for comfort food that is far from run-ofthe-mill, offering an intriguing mix of Pacific Northwest favorites and richly sauced gastronomic nods to Grossi’s Italian heritage.

On a recent visit, a starter dish of Caponata, a thick Sicilian stew of eggplant, artichoke hearts, olives and tomato, similar to a French ratatouille, arrived with grilled thick slices of Joe’s Table’s homemade bread. It was topped with an optional ball of soft burrata cheese, a creamy counterpoint to the vinegar-infused flavors of the Caponata.” Portions at Joe’s Table are ample and though billed as a starter, the dish could have served as a meal in itself.

Another Sicilian specialty, the Caserecci, consisted of kale and clam meat topping a bed of chewy pasta noodles, designed to hold the entrée’s rich lemon garlic cream sauce. Unusual pastas are a house specialty: the unique bell-shaped Torchio pasta, an import from Italy’s Abruzzo region, accompanies the succulent Prawns Giardino, which features Grossi’s signature pomodoro sauce, an exceptional rendering of the Italian classic that Grossi learned from his Italian grandmother.

Pacific Northwest staples are amply represented. A halibut fish and chips order is prepared with perfectly

crisped breading; the fish moist and impeccably cooked.

The accompanying French fries were lightly seasoned, thick-cut and twice-cooked in the European style, with a crispness on the outside and soft-as-a-pillow, melt-inthe-mouth interiors. They exemplified the restaurant’s intention to take simple ingredients and preparations and elevate them to a higher level. Other menu items that have had an evergreen appeal include two longtime carnivore favorites, the Steak Frites, featuring a flat iron steak and a chimichurri sauce and the “Bone-in Tomahawk, a majestic ribeye served with lyonnaise potatoes and a demi-glace. As with all of Grossi’s meat, fish and produce ingredients, the beef for those dishes is sourced locally and sustainably.

Grossi takes pride in showcasing the bounty of Pacific Northwest ingredients and the restaurant’s emphasis on local sources is also reflected in Joe’s Table wine list. Upon settling in at the restaurant’s tables, diners are visited by wine steward Doug Pullen, who offers complimentary sips of Oregon and Washington vintages. In addition to a good assortment of Northwest wines, Joe’s Table offers craft beers and some inventive, Northwest-themed cocktails.

Live music by pianist and vocal stylist Bret Lucich is on tap Thursday through Sunday evenings. On Monday nights, Grossi offers his interpretation of southern fried chicken, prepared with a gluten-free breading.

Adding a new dimension to Joe’s Table, the restaurant has recently brought Cordon Bleu-trained pastry chef T.J. Christian aboard for desserts, which on a recent night included a house-made tiramisu, an exotic cake augmented with liqueur and mascarpone and an Italian Affogato, with ice cream swimming in espresso and liqueur.

“T.J. is as passionate about what he does as I am about my cooking,” Grossi said, “so having him aboard is a beautiful thing.”

Plans for future special offerings include charcuterie plates, wine dinners, homemade pasta offerings and partnerships with vintners for special wine dinners.

Grossi added that he’ll experiment with new dishes as he goes along, adding items from his Italian heritage but also food from other culinary traditions.

“I really, truly do love food,” he said. “I’m trying to keep it fun and interesting and I’ve found that if you bring love and passion to it, there’s no type of food you can’t cook.”

Located between Florence and Yachats, the Cape Perpetua area is a biodiverse recreation destination, home

to lush coastal rainforests and deep cultural history. It also includes Oregon’s largest marine reserve, where the take of wildlife and human development is restricted.

Because of its dynamic environment, the Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve is home to a wide range of wildlife such as whales, sea lions, seals, pelicans, cormorants, rockfish and intertidal invertebrates that fuel a complex food web between the land and sea.

The area also contains two Marine Protected Areas and a seabird protection area. Unlike the reserve, these protected places allow limited take in their boundaries.

The Cape Perpetua Collaborative is an organization giving voice to this special place through speaker presentations, ambassador programs and citizen science projects.

The Jan. 31 symposium will begin at 5 pm at the Yachats Commons, located at 441 Hwy. 101. Food and drinks are provided and a raffle featuring coastal gifts will take place at intermission.

ou can see them on the license plates of local cars or spouting offshore from the window of your own: whales are as integral to the Central Coast as crabs and conifers.

The twice-yearly Whale Watch Weeks are times to catch the peak migration times of gray whales along the Oregon Coast. Multiple viewing locations are staffed by graduates of the Whale Watching Spoken Here program and special events are often held.

This year, Winter Whale Watch Week, when whales are heading south to Baja, takes place from Thursday, Dec. 26, through Tuesday, Dec. 31.

And this year, the Visitor Center at Newport’s Hatfield Marine Science Center will be hosting exciting activities and educational programs.

From 11 am to 4 pm daily, the center will be jumping with hands-on activities and crafts, films and games. Daily guest lectures will be given in the center’s auditorium at 11 am.

Gray whales will take center stage, but whales of all species will be celebrated, highlighting their unique adaptations and offering the best whale-watching tips.

plus gray whales now live in the Eastern North Pacific area. About 30 whales per hour migrate past the Oregon Coast during the peak southbound migration.

By comparison, six per hour pass by on the northbound trip, but that return trip is spread over four months. Roughly 200 of these whales drop off the migration route and feed along the Oregon Coast all summer.

Though volunteers will be at 15 locations from Astoria to Brookings, 10 of those locations are on the Central Coast between Manzanita and Yachats, with the Depoe Bay Whale Watching Center being the most popular place to gather. The center has high-powered cameras trained on the ocean, ready to zoom in when a spout has been spotted.

The Hatfield Marine Science Center Visitor Center is located at 2030 SE Marine Science Drive in Newport.

Whale Watch Week activities are included with the $5 entry fee for those aged five and older.

Yachats Peace Hike strives for understanding

n New Year’s Day, Yachats will host the 15th annual Peace Hike gathering, a meaningful event that honors the legacy of the indigenous peoples who endured immense suffering under government-sponsored genocidal policies during the 19th Century.

The more than three-hour long event, beginning and ending at the Yachats Commons, includes ceremonies, drumming and guided trail walks with a variety of distance options.

To begin the day of reflection, the Yachats community drum will be available at the commons. People who wish to join in with the drumming are welcome to do so.

The opening ceremony will officially begin with the lighting of the fire at the commons, and will include storytelling by Tribal members and the recounting of the story of Amanda, an indigenous woman commemorated with a statue at Cape Perpetua.

Next, the trail walks will commence. Participants can choose from several options indicated on a map designed by the Yachats Trails Committee and available at the commons. The hike to the Amanda Gathering Area is a little more than two miles, but parking options will be available for those not wishing to hike the full distance.

Volunteers at the commons will provide instructions.

A special ceremony, led by Tribal members, will take place at the Amanda Gathering Area.

regon State Parks wants to help you start the year off right with First Day Hikes, a day when entry and parking fees are waived and, in many cases, park rangers are on hand to assist with exploring some of the most stunning parts of our great state.

The following three events on the Central Coast are just a sampling of the more than 30 hikes happening this coming Wednesday, Jan. 1.

Fogarty Creek State Park This hike will be a roughly two-anda-half-mile out-and-back trip along the Oregon Coast Trail from Fogarty Creek State Park to just north of Boiler Bay State Park.

The terrain varies from dirt trail, gravel, rock stairs and walking on the shoulder of Highway 101. Parts of the trail can have uneven surfaces. Plan accordingly for hiking through possible wet and muddy sections.

Two time slots are available at 10 and 10:30 am. Fogarty Creek State Park is located at 2900 N Hwy. 101 in Depoe Bay. The meeting point will be near the restroom on the north side of the park.

Registration is required and no dogs are allowed.

Sitka Sedge State Natural Area

This trail provides opportunities for bird watching, whale watching and mushroom identification. The hike

includes the Beltzs Dike, which goes through the Sandlake Estuary, providing an opportunity to possibly see a river otter. From there, walkers will hike a loop trail through the forest with views of the estuary and access to the beach. The total distance is two and a half miles.

The hike will start at noon at the Sitka Sedge parking lot.

Yachats State Recreation Area Sunset Hike This roughly one-and-a-half-mile round-trip guided hike heads along part of the historic 804 trail from Yachats State Recreation Area to Smelt Sands State Recreation Site. This hike will have almost continuous views of the Pacific Ocean and should finish just in time for a spectacular sunset, if the weather cooperates. There is also the possibility of spotting gray whales that are on the southern leg of their annual migration.

Well-behaved dogs may attend as long as they remain on a six-foot or shorter leash.

The hike will start at 3:30 pm at the Yachats State Recreation Area parking lot.
