olly, the Texas stray, makes a beeline towards a penguin-looking bird standing still at the wrack line, peering out into the frigid surf.

From May through August, common murres lay their colorful, pear-shaped eggs and rear their chicks on the rock islands of Depoe Bay and Yaquina Head, while out at sea, juvenile “jumplings” cry for food as their fathers fish in the dimly lit waters far below the swells.

A beach-bound murre, like the one Molly discovers, is a bird in distress.

Molly’s beach walk is cut short and up the beach access stairs we go. I call 541-867-3474, press #3 and even at 8 am on a Sunday, a staff member at the Oregon Coast Aquarium answers the phone — instructs me to bring the murre to the rehabilitation center and reminds me not to feed it.

On an earlier rescue, I neglected to call the aquarium first and instead attempted to coax the bewildered murre into eating a teaspoon of Bumble Bee tuna.

Jacques Cousteau I am not.

I drop the dog off at the house and haul a laundry basket and towels back down to the beach to collect the distressed seabird. The murre waddles towards the surf but it’s spent and doesn’t bother to flap its short powerful wings.

After a few half-hearted pecks and two guano saturated towels, the murre is delivered to the aquarium. A friendly staff member meets me at the fence, boxes up the murre and hands me a card with an identifying number and contact information

that will allow me to check on the bird’s status.

Murres fly at a top speed of 55 miles per hour and use their wings to swim to depths greater than 300 feet in search of small fish. Because the murre’s vigorous life is lived in a cold and unforgiving environment, the seabird must consume 56 percent of its body weight, per day, just to maintain its metabolism. Any reduction in the population of bait-fish affects their survival.

In 2015 and 2016, an oceanic warming event known as the “Blob” infiltrated coastal waters from California to the Gulf of Alaska and led to the deaths of an estimated one million murres. Many died because they were caught in an endothermic vice.

In an endothermic vice, warm water diminishes the nutritional quality of tiny zooplankton. Bait-fish eat the lowquality zooplankton and struggle to put on fat. Murres then must eat significantly more “skinny” bait-fish than they would normally eat if the fish were of typical size. The warming ocean also increases the metabolism of predatory rockfish, which causes them to eat more of the same bait-fish that murres rely on for survival.

Unfortunately for murres, there are only so many bait-fish to go around.

The high number of murres found distressed on the beaches this summer might have been the byproduct not of the “Blob” but of a successful hatch. For a variety of reasons, young murres don’t always thrive and sometimes out at sea they are separated from their fathers.

Even though proportionally just as many young birds might have been in distress this year as is normal, because there were

more birds born overall, the number of murres wandering Oregon’s beaches increased.

When a seabird is brought to the aquarium, Curator of Birds CJ McCarty and her team check the bird’s temperature and weight. If the bird is underweight, it is tube-fed clear fluids or a nutritionally balanced liquid diet, made especially for fisheating animals, every two hours. After 18 to 24 hours of the liquid diet, the murre is offered fish. If the bird remains stable after 48 to 72 hours, it is transferred to the Wildlife Center of the North Coast in Astoria. There, staff ensure it gains weight and muscle, is able to dive, that its feathers are waterproof and that it is healthy enough to re-enter the wild.

So far this year, CJ and her team have cared for 235 seabirds and, of the 125 murres that the aquarium received, 50 survived initial stabilization and were shipped to Astoria for further rehabilitation.

Currently, this labor-intensive work is done in addition to the staff ’s primary mission of caring for the aquarium’s 80 resident seabirds, turkey vultures and ambassador pelicans. A $5 million grant from the Roundhouse Foundation will allow the aquarium to build and staff a modern veterinary clinic and wildlife rehabilitation center that will provide onsite care for the aquarium’s animal collection, the harbor seal wrapped in fishing line, the emaciated murre and even the occasional chilled sea turtle.

n exhibit of works featuring the traditional Japanese folk art style of gyotaku, or fish printing, is now on display at OSU’s Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport.

“Blue Heart: Beauty and Change Along America’s Western Shoreline,” by artists Dwight Hwang and Duncan Berry, will be on display in the Gladys Valley Marine Studies Building through next October.

Gyotaku is a method of applying ink to the surface of the subject and placing lightweight paper on top and rubbing until the contours of the subject are transferred to the paper. Hwang creates classical gyotaku art using traditional materials and Berry uses modern ink and application methods.

The 25-piece exhibit features pieces by each artist as well as works on which they collaborated.

The collection reflects the power and beauty of the Pacific Ocean as well as the deep and lasting climate-driven changes occurring along the western shoreline.

In an artists’ statement, Hwang and Berry said: “For us, making these impressions directly from the bodies of creatures that frequent the land, sea and air along our coastlines is an ‘active form of reverence’ like a giant living Braille. ... And in doing so we get to witness the fascinating stories of their lives and the dramatic climatic changes they are adapting to everyday. We hope that these images will connect you in a deeper way with the ocean and our relationship and responsibility to find ways to lessen the impacts of climate change.”

The Gladys Valley Marine Studies Building, completed last year, is a 72,000-square-foot classroom, lab and office building that also includes a 250-seat auditorium, a café and other public spaces.

In addition to the “Blue Heart” exhibit, the new building features a number of other regional works of art commissioned through Oregon’s Percent for Art in Public Places program, managed by the Oregon Arts Commission.

Among those works is “44°37’19.668” N 124°2’43.86” W (for Charles),”

by OSU art instructor Michael Boonstra. The eight-panel piece combines photographic processes, digital manipulation, drawing and hands-on experimentation with water and environmental phenomena along the Oregon Coast.

“This is Water” is an installation of 19 circular vitrines, or glass display cases, by artist Joe Thurston. They display imagery associated with the marine science campus and nearby bodies of water.

The installation is located in the first floor entry, the main stairwell and second floor mezzanine and features an infinity design with images etched onto mirror and reflected with LED lights. The installation also features sound to accompany the images.

Find unique, indie-made goods at Lincoln City’s Local Faire

ucked away in the middle of the Lincoln City Outlets is an alluring, beautiful and show-stopping shop, Local Faire.

The shop carries pieces from a multitude of local independent, or indie, artisans who craft a spectrum of highquality and one-of-a-kind goods.

Customers are blanketed with a feeling of warmth as they enter, surrounded by products that seem to make the world a more colorful and connected place.

There is something about knowing all the products are locally crafted or designed that really grabs you. It is as if you are sauntering through an art museum.

“People who come in tell us ‘Everything is so beautiful and inspiring,’ owner Sheila Jaillet said. “People are able to have an experience where they just enjoy looking at all we have to offer.”

The story of Local Faire began last year when it opened as a holiday pop-up in the shopping center.

“Out of the blue, I received a call about it,” Jaillet said, “and although it wasn’t anywhere on my radar to do, I knew immediately that this was a ‘Yes!’” Jailett was not new to operating a business, having experience in farmers markets like the Portland Saturday Market for years.

After deciding to do the pop-up, the group of artists involved all pitched in to split the fees of opening the shop.

“Last year, with our normal holiday markets closed, many of the artists and I didn’t have an outlet to sell,” Jailett said. “It felt like a really serendipitous and wonderful opportunity.”

This resulted in them being offered a permanent spot.

“It wasn’t in my plans to open a shop in the center, but the response from the people was so positive,” Jaillett said. “This is such an integral and centralized location for shoppers in Lincoln City. It’s been the best. It feels like it’s a shop that can benefit shoppers who find us and our goods, as well as support small-scale artisans and makers.”

One of the group’s many philosophies is to shop unique, but also shop local. At Local Faire, there are plenty of rare options that you simply cannot find anywhere else.

The artists take a simple product and then elevate it to the next level. There is something for everyone, from stickers, to jewelry, hats and cutting boards.

“I really tried to find well-made goods that have something unique about them,” Jaillet said. “I wanted the store to feel like a cool, shoppable spot with a natural flow.”

Though she considers herself a practical artist, having studied herbalism, or plant-based medicine, Jaillet now considers the shop her current art project. She has devoted much of her spare time to running Local Faire.

“The shop is my current art project even though I do have some of my stuff in here,” she said.

And even though she never thought being a shop owner would be in her future, it has come somewhat naturally to her.

“It’s been so fulfilling in that it has utilized so many of my personality traits and skill sets,” Jaillet said. “I have really loved creating the aesthetic for this space. I just do what feels right

and then when I hear people say they enjoyed the vibe and how this space is like an oasis to them, it makes me feel great.”

Jaillet has also worked to transform the space in a creative manner, taking color organization into consideration and manipulating basic items, like transforming peg boards into a beautiful display for more art.

Inside Local Faire, you’ll find products like botanical creations from Lush Living Sculpture, run by Atma Rashni.

Using the Japanese kokedama technique, Rashni encases the roots of a plant into a ball of soil, which is then coated in moss and wrapped in string to keep it together.

The store also carries beautiful products from Earthlights, a family-owned business that produces “art on fire.”

Earthlights creates candles from some of the Earth’s rarest and most beautiful elements, like vananydyte and black amethyst.

In a world where consumers are so far removed from the origins and story of the products they buy, Local Faire stands up and says “I’m here and I am made with love by real humans,” bridging the gap between creator and patron.

ow in its 13th year, the Nye Beach Banner Project celebrates Nye Beach as the “Art Heart” of Newport, beautifies the coastal neighborhood and highlights the creative talents of community artists. It also raises funds for Youth Art programs, sponsored by the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts and the City of Newport.

The auction will be a multi-day, multi-platform event, starting with an in-person kick-off party on Saturday, Nov. 6, from 1 to 5 pm at the Newport Visual Arts Center, with music provided by Barbara Turrill. On Saturday, Nov. 13, there will be a family friendly activity at the VAC from noon to 4 pm.

Banners will be on display and available for in-person viewing Nov. 6 through 14. The online bidding will be open until 7 pm on Nov. 14.

Artists who donate their time and talents to the project are encouraged to depict some element of Nye Beach on one side of the banner, like music, dance, acting, writing, art and architectural or natural elements. Meanwhile, the other side of the banner sports a thought-provoking or smile-inducing quote or simply the words “Nye Beach.”

Artists are also welcome to create a banner based on a theme. This year, with a challenging 2020 behind us, they

included “A Tribute or Thank you to our Front Line Workers” and “Looking Towards New Horizons.” Some artists addressed the theme while others responded to the pandemic. Many artists included conceptual statements on their banners.

Nine banners are part of the second year of banner exchanges with Newport’s Sister City, Mombetsu, Japan.

Banner artists range from young students to seasoned crafters, all who have stepped up to the challenge for another year and strengthened Lincoln County’s sense of community.

For this year’s project, 41 adult artists donated their creative talents along with 19 youth artists, six individual artists from Newport’s sister city and the Mombetsu High School art club.

“I’m amazed by how the Banner Project continues to grow in scope and reach,” said Veronica Lundell, the project founder and owner of Jovi in Nye Beach. “We continue to support projects such as Art Fridays classes and summer art camps, plus we now have a banner partner in Japan and are part of the Oregon Coast Art Bus Project. Creative outlets for youth are particularly important this year.”

fter a little re-tuning of the program, the Newport Symphony Orchestra at the Ocean’s winter concert season continues this Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 6 and 7, at the Newport Performing Arts Center.

Led by Music Director and Conductor Adam Flatt, the concert will feature worldrenowned operatic and concert tenor Thomas Young.

“The COVID situation continues in constant flux, so it appeared prudent to make a few program substitutions in order to reduce our numbers on stage while retaining the thematic thrust of the program,” Maestro Flatt said. “Fortunately, in art every situation is an opportunity! Thomas Young most graciously advocated for masterpieces by Henry Purcell and George Frideric Handel which are performed with a small orchestra. It is a dream of a program, an evening not to be missed.”

Young will serve as narrator for Joseph Schwantner’s well-known dramatic melodrama ”New Morning for the World, Daybreak of Freedom,” featuring texts from the speeches of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. He will sing stirring arias from George Frideric Handel’s “Jephtha,” Henry Purcell’s “Come, ye sons of Art’’ and Felix Mendelssohn’s “St. Paul.”

Still’s charming “Serenade,” a work that includes traditional American melodies and harmonies that express his heritage and individual compositional voice.

Young is a Grammy- and Clio Awardwinning lyric tenor who has appeared as a principal soloist in the major concert halls and opera houses of some 30 countries.

In addition to his distinguished performance career, he serves as professor of music at Sarah Lawrence College and is in demand as a conductor, clinician and master class specialist.

Known for his unique dramatic and musical intelligence, beauty of tone and exceptional technique, Young is recognized as today’s foremost interpreter of tenor roles in contemporary opera and can be heard on many recordings, some of which were Grammynominated.

The performance on Saturday includes a pre-concert talk by Conductor Adam Flatt at 6:45 pm, with the concert beginning at 7:30 pm. The Sunday performance is at 2 pm.

In 2019, Gibbons connected with Patricia Plunkett Holler, one of the descendants of the homesteaders of the property, who saw his painting featured in an online article and instantly recognized the tree.

“My dad told me about how, when he was quite a small boy, he stood beside his grandfather and watched him plant a little spruce tree near the road that went by their land in Eddyville,” Plunkett Holler said. “That had to have happened right around year 1900.”

Patricia and her family have always felt a strong connection to the tree, now more than 120 years old, that captured Gibbons’ attention on one of his many painting excursions along the Oregon Coast.

Collectors limited edition versions of “Painting in Nature,” featuring gold leaf lettering, are available for purchase at the gallery for $125.

hirteen Lincoln County ceramic artists will fill the Newport Visual Arts Center from Saturday, Nov. 6 through Dec. 23 for “Lincoln County Clay,” a facility-wide celebration of the redesign and reopening of the VAC’s clay studio.

An opening reception will be held on Saturday, Nov. 6, from noon to 4 pm, with an artist’s talk at 2 pm. “‘Lincoln County Clay’ should prove to be a significant and contemporary survey of the many talented clay artists working in Lincoln County,” said VAC Director Tom Webb. “The show will include numerous masters in the field as well as artists who have come to ceramics somewhat later in life.”

Participating artists include Jacob Accurso, Frank Boyden, Chasse Davidson, Steve Dennis, Taunette Dixon, Liz Fox, Julie Fiedler, Erica Leach, Alice Martin, Liisa Rahkonen, Christy Steenkolk, Martha Wallace and Pam Young.

“Lincoln County is so rich with ceramic activity, I am honored to be a part of bringing together a collection of that talent to be showcased under one roof,” said Chasse Davidson,

a senior curator for “Lincoln County Clay” and a member of the VAC’s clay advisory group. “It has been a personal goal to help expand the local clay community in this area.

I think this collection of artists will display the vast array of possibilities within clay creation.”

Accurso found pottery while serving as a novice monk at the Mount Angel Abbey. Today, he produces pieces like those in the monastery — attractive yet still practical for everyday use.

Boyden has worked with clay for 53 years, including raku, terra sigillata and wood firing, and since 1993 has worked only in porcelain. His work is included in more than 100 museums and he has received a major grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. He and his wife founded the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology in 1970.

Davidson served as president of the Toledo Arts Guild from 2014 to 2016, and owned and managed Toledo Clay Works from 2015 to 2020. She currently sells dishware and raku at Oceanic Arts in Newport and at Land and Sea in Florence and is collaborating with Ram Papish on a series incorporating his wildlife imagery on her thrown forms.

Dennis has been a full-time studio artist for the past 45 years and is the owner and curator of Earthworks Gallery in Yachats. He is a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship recipient.

Dixon is fairly new to ceramics but has had her hand in clay most days over the last five years. She has a private studio and sells her work at Wind Drift Gallery and Newport Bay Candle Company.

Fox has lived on the Oregon Coast for most of her life and after retiring as a high school librarian in 2020, has been a full-time potter, pursuing an interest she dabbled in for more than 40 years.

drawing at age 10, Fiedler began oil painting at age 11. In college she worked in clay for eight weeks, which ignited an interest in hand-building clay sculptures. A project of china painting on tile for a home remodel blossomed into a custom tile-painting business that she continues to operate to this day.

The woman behind the online ceramic outlet Erica Rose Pottery, Leach sells her pots through the site.

A former Alaskan, Martin’s work has been exhibited in more than 24 gallery shows, 12 local and national invitational exhibitions and 17 regional and national juried exhibitions.

She is one of 11 artist owners of For ArtSake Gallery in Newport.

Rahkonen is a sculptor, painter and mixed-media artist whose work has been shown nationally and internationally.

She was invited to participate in the Art in the Embassies Program and had her artwork in the US Embassy in El Salvador. In 2019, her paintings and sculpture were exhibited in a two-person exhibit at the Lincoln City Cultural Center.

A lifelong Oregon coast local and originally a glass blower, Steenkolk blended her love of creating artistic forms with functionality to create pottery. She has been honing her skills on the pottery wheel since 2019.

Wallace has been creating ceramic art for about 30 years.

She retired to the Oregon Coast in 2013 and has been working to refine her skills on the wheel. About five years ago, she began teaching pottery.

Clay has entertained Young for more than 45 years. For the past nine years, it has taken over her life, with farmers markets, shows and galleries. Her pottery is recognizable for its whimsy, humor, color and texture.

The clay studio is set to open in late November with all new equipment, furnishings and supplies. Trial classes in the Clay Studio Project will run in December, with more formal offerings beginning in January.

Three events on the horizon

A

series of events from the Cape Perpetua Collaborative aims to help people learn more about the area’s past, become involved with its present and help make plans the future.

On Saturday, Nov. 6, CoastWatch Volunteer Coordinator Jesse Jones and CPC Communications Coordinator Tara DuBois will help kick off the king tides season with a history of king tides and the Oregon King Tides Project.

This interactive virtual session will focus on sites in and near Cape Perpetua and other nearby central coast sites that need documenting.

Jones is a lifelong Oregonian and has devoted her career to the watersheds of Oregon’s North Coast.

She has managed large and small habitat restoration projects, engaged countless property owners in land conservation and worked alongside youth of all ages.

She is a naturalist and was a private guide for the Haystack Rock Awareness Program, chair of the Surfrider Foundation North Coast chapter and chair of the non-profit Pelican Science, which she helped found. She is also a collage artist, poet and bossa nova musician.

The presentation begins at 10 am and is the first in 202122 series of virtual educational presentations hosted by the Cape Perpetua Collaborative, held via Zoom most Saturdays through December.

••• Join like-minded beach lovers for a marine debris cleanup at Cape Cove Beach on Tuesday, Nov. 9. This project is great for anyone who would like to spend an hour or two contributing to science and cleaning up beaches around the Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve.

The event will cover about 100 yards of Cape Cove Beach, which includes flat sand, wood debris, cobble rocks and lava rock. Beach debris is usually found in rocky and woody areas.

After the survey, the finds will be sorted and documented, and the plastic items will be kept for re-use in various projects.

The coordinator will email participants with a breakdown of the days finds.

The group will meet at the Cove Beach trailhead at 9 am.

Heading south on Highway 101, it is the first pull-off on the right after the Campground/Day Use area. Heading north on 101, it’s the second pull-off on the left after the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center.

If you have your own bucket and gloves bring them. Bags and gloves will be available to use if needed.

“Marine Mammals Before Extirpation: Using Archaeology to Understand Native American Use of Sea Otters in Oregon Prior to European Contact.”

When Euro-American explorers and traders made contact with Indigenous communities on the Northwest Coast in the 1700s, they encountered and over-exploited marine mammal resources. Some populations rebounded under state and federal laws protecting them from further exploitation, while others, like the locally extinct Oregon sea otter, never recovered.

Sea otters are the focus of recent conservation efforts led by diverse stakeholders, yet little systematic study of them in precontact Oregon has occurred.

Wellman’s work explores ancestral tribal use of sea otters and human-sea otter relationships in Oregon prior to European contact, and also addresses the historical ecology of the Oregon sea otter through ancient DNA analysis of archaeological sea otter remains.

Her research interests include past environments, humananimal and human-environment relationships and ecological sovereignty. She is a rising Sea Grant John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellow.

The presentation will begin via Zoom at 5:30 pm.

The series will continue on the second Tuesday of each month through April.
