Helping our environment

by planting mangroves The protection of our environment is a core Sustainability focus for PCS Thailand. Under our revitalised approach to green ideals, we are refocusing our efforts to increase support for our four pillars of sustainability: social mobility, environmental protection, carbon reporting, and clear communication on these and other topics.

We are currently enhancing our environmental protection initiatives, and limiting our carbon footprint in order to make even more progress toward our sustainability goals. This transformative direction is led by our Sustainability Lead, James Jessup.

“We’re doing our part for the conservation of natural resources, and to combat global warming,” James says, “because it’s a crisis that affects everyone across the globe.”

We have implemented several measures in order to make PCS a greener business, including installing solar panels, limiting energy consumption, and reducing our use of plastic. However, we believe in making a lasting impact outside of our organisation. That’s why our team has been planting mangroves to support the flora, fauna and people that live in the area.

Strengthening coastlines, communities, and local ecology This year, on 22 October, 100 of our colleagues banded together to plant an additional 300 mangrove trees in Bang Pakong, Chachoengsao. Volunteers from the PCS team waded through muddy swamps in the afternoon sun, working side-by-side with staff from the Thai Department of Marine and Coastal Resources to preserve these vulnerable coastal areas.

Mangrove forests play a significant role in protecting the environment. They are at the heart of some of the most important and most diverse ecosystems on the planet, acting as a critical habitat for endangered species. These forests act as nurseries and homes to many animals and plants, including monkeys, tigers, and several kinds of shellfish. For that reason, mangrove forests serve as attractions for ecotourism, with visitors taking advantage of the opportunity to observe rare and interesting animals up close.

Mangrove leaves and roots also provide essential nutrients that nourish both the land and sea, supporting many of the fish caught commercially in tropical regions. As such, mangroves serve as the backbone for both local and regional economies.

Furthermore, mangrove trees greatly contribute to reducing CO2 levels. The mangrove forests in Chachoengsao are estimated to capture at least 9 tonnes of carbon dioxide per Rai. They defend shorelines from erosion and damage, and can even protect the local community against flooding, hurricanes and tsunamis.

As such, each mangrove sapling we plant has a small, but very real, role in the continuing fight against climate change and its impacts.

Sustainable action for a better future By helping these mangroves take root, we at PCS Thailand are doing our part to help protect the environment, the ecosystems, and the communities in Chachoengsao over the long term. However, we want our participation to represent more than a mere gesture, or a one-off exercise.

Nitinan Thamhatai, the workstream lead for Environmental Protection, has already begun planning for PCS to return next year to maintain the green area we’ve planted.
