We invite you to explore the Rustic Roads - whether by car, bicycle, motorcycle or foot. These lightly traveled country roads provide a serene, peaceful experience, no matter what the season.
Rustic Road 109
Location: Northeast Wisconsin, Oconto County. North Park Avenue Road, beginning at County S in the city of Oconto and ending at Maple School Grove Road in the town of Little River.
Length: 2.3 miles
Surface: Paved R-109 is referred to by some local residents as “Wisconsin’s Everglades” because the road runs through a large complex of coastal wetlands that ultimately connect to the Oconto Marsh. Along some parts of the route, travelers will see majestic cattails that line both sides of the road, as well as blue flag iris, swamp milkweed, marsh fern and lowland grasses. In the middle of the route, the trees lining the road form a graceful canopy that arches over the road. R-109 also has a century farmstead visible from the road.
Rustic Road 113
Location: Northeast Wisconsin, Oconto County. Old 32 Road, between County W and County F. Length: 9.4 miles
Surface: Paved R-113 passes through the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest where beautiful wooded vistas teem with wildlife and birds. A complementary feature is the Mountain Fire Lookout Tower. It was built in 1934 and is the only fire tower still standing in the area. R-113 also provides access to the Nicolet State Trail and cross country ski trails.

Pack up the family and travel to the northernmost region of Oconto County for a truly remarkable fall adventure. The Quartz Hill Trail offers one of the prettiest views of the brilliant fall colors from atop a quartz rock outcrop. Hike through the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest to witness the dazzling colors of the hardwood forest and the glassy luster of quartz crystal.
Quartz Hill Trail is located on Highway 32, about 4 miles north of Townsend on the border of Oconto and Forest counties. The trail is divided into two separate sections - one to the east and one to the west of Highway 32. The east section of Quartz Hill Trail leads to the summit of McCaslin Mountain. The scenic overlook provides a panoramic view of the surrounding hills and forest.
Rated moderate to difficult, the trail presents a modest challenge to hikers due to its steep ascents and rocky, uneven terrain. However, the trail generally is dry, with boardwalks spanning the wettest areas.
Interpretive signs along the trail draw attention to the area’s unique history and identity. For example, upon reaching the quartz crystal deposit, hikers can learn why the early Native Americans visited Quartz Hill to collect quartz.
The Quartz Hill Trail is worth the drive to northern Oconto County for a breathtaking view of the fall colors. Take some photos – but please don’t take the quartz. Rockhounding is prohibited in order to preserve the quartz for others to enjoy. Happy hiking!
See Northern Oconto County ablaze with fall color from 100 feet in the air. Experience a bird’s eye view of the Northwoods’ natural beauty at the Mountain Fire Lookout Tower. The Mountain Fire Lookout Tower delivers a spectacular panorama of the east side of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. To reach the 7- by 7-foot lookout perch, all you need to do is climb 132 steps. The effort is well worth it! The Mountain Fire Lookout Tower rewards climbers with breathtakingly vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow.
The steel tower was built in 1935 by the U.S. Forest Service and Civilian Conservation Corps. Just the 41st lookout tower registered in the U.S., the tower is listed on the National Historic Lookout Register and the National Register of Historic Places. With the help of key partnerships and community donations, the Lakewood-Laona Ranger District completely restored the tower in 2015 and 2016.
For the best view, visit the Mountain Fire Lookout Tower in late September and early October - typically the time of year when fall foliage is at its peak in Oconto County. The Mountain Fire Lookout Tower is located 3 miles north of Mountain and is open from 8 a.m. until sunset until Nov. 1. Visiting the site is free, but donations are appreciated.
The natural area itself is quite aesthetic with numerous rock outcrops affording scenic views and having one of the few waterfalls on the Nicolet. Hagar Mountain is owned by the USDA Forest Service and was designated a State Natural Area in 1996.
Directions: From the intersection of State Highway 32 and County Highway W in Mountain, go east on W 3 miles to the junction with FR 2630 (Bear Paw Rd). Continue on W 0.5 mile to a cabin at Fire #13124. Park along W. To reach Hagar Mountain, go north on a foot trail that runs along the property line from the east side of the cabin. Please do not trespass on private land.
Cathedral Pines is a 40-acre grove of white pine, hemlock and red pine that escaped cutting by lumberjacks in the 1900s. Located in the ChequamegonNicolet National Forest’s Lakewood-Laona Ranger District, this dynamic and exceptionally scenic old-growth forest is one of the few remaining stands of towering pine and hemlock in Wisconsin.
Directions: Take State Highway 32 on the north end of the Town of Lakewood, turn southwest onto Archibald Lake Road (Forest Road 2121). Drive 1.4 miles on FR 2121, then look for the “Watchable Wildlife” sign and turn right (northwest) onto Cathedral Drive (FR 3299). Drive 0.4 mile on this gravel road to the parking lot. After your visit, continue driving northwest on Cathedral Drive, then take a right onto paved Presbyterian Road (FR 3304) and you’ll quickly come to County Highway T near Townsend.
A hiking trail was developed in the Town of Brazeau to reach the county's highest point called Butler Rock. This two mile sand trek is not for the fainthearted, but the views are spectacular, especially during the Fall colors.
The hike to Butler Rock is moderate and totally worth the short but steep incline during the last 0.2 miles to the top. The lookout at the top of Butler Rock of the surrounding Chequamegon-Nicolet National
is a must-see view.
The Oconto Marsh Unit consists of approximately 928 acres and is located one mile northeast of Oconto along County Road Y north almost to County Road A in Oconto County. There is one parking lot along County Road Y at the southern end of the property. A 220-acre impoundment maintains an emergent marsh on the south end of the property. This impoundment is surrounded by sedge meadows and shrub-carr habitats in the coastal wetlands of Green Bay. There are areas of lowland forest interspersed with wet openings found along the edges of the coastal wetland and areas of aspen/oak woodlands on the northern end of the unit.
Parks, trails, and natural areas are a critical part of what shapes quality of life for everyone in Oconto County! Oconto County is dedicated to creating a variety of recreation opportunities for our residents and visitors, while preserving and enhancing the rich heritage and natural beauty of this area. Whatever your age and whatever the season, you’ll find many ways to be active and enjoy the great outdoors.

A longtime tradition in Wisconsin, the Friday Night Fish Fry kicks off the weekend all over the state with friends, family — and plenty of fish, of course. Fresh walleye is one of the most beloved Friday Night Fish Fry dishes. When the fish is dipped in a light beer batter and deep-fried to a golden crispness, it’s just about perfect. In Oconto County, however, many aren’t satisfied with simply tasting walleye. They want to catch a few themselves. And they’re in luck: Oconto County offers some of the finest walleye fishing on the Bay of Green Bay (not to mention on several of the County’s 378 lakes). Here, experienced outfitters and guides offer everything from simple boat or fishing-kayak rentals to multi-day guided excursions out on the waters of Lake Michigan. If you’re looking to land a few walleyes in Wisconsin, Oconto County is one of your very best options.
WALLEYE FISHINGFor More Guides
When Is Walleye Season? Walleye fishing usually kicks off on the Bay of Green Bay tributaries in late March or early April, depending on weather. In June and July, schools of walleye make their way to mid-lake flats and reefs. From August through November, anglers head to the north part of the Bay to catch trophy walleyes in the 25-33-inch range.
Why is Oconto County Such A Walleye Hotspot? Like clockwork, every spring when the ice clears, walleye migrate to the numerous rivers that feed into the Bay of Green Bay. The Bay has a thriving baitfish population for walleye to chow down on, as well as a lot of offshore structure. It’s a combo that makes the walleyes grow quickly and often to very large sizes.
Where Are the Best Spots? In addition to the Bay itself, there are a number of rivers and tributaries in Oconto County that deliver phenomenal walleye runs. Machickanee Flowage near Oconto Falls is a fisherman’s dream come true, offering walleye, northern pike, bass and panfish, in addition to trout and salmon. Same goes for the Oconto River. These various river systems provide an opportunity to fish all spring and even provide opportunities for shore fishing, but if you want a chance at your personal best, the Bay of Green Bay is the place to go. Big water = big fish.
Do I Need A Fishing License? Yes, you’ll need a paper copy of your current Wisconsin fishing license (DNR requires a paper copy for fishing on the bay of Green Bay: Non-resident or Resident).

Rev-Up Your Weekend - Get your Oconto County adventures off to a fitting start with a bit of all-terrain vehicle excitement. The County is home to over 500 miles of interconnected scenic riding with options for all experience levels. Note: Wisconsin law requires those who use Wisconsin ATV or UTV trails to display either Wisconsin registration or a Nonresident Trail Pass.
The ultimate ATV excursion in Oconto County starts at the Nicolet State Recreational Trail, which spans the entire eastern segment of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. The trail begins in Gillett. Traveling due north on this trail leads you to some seriously breathtaking scenery — including the famous Cathedral Pines.
Trails Open April 29 – November 5, 2023. Dates are subject to change due to weather. Request a free map at ocontocounty.org.
All-terrain vehicle and utility terrain vehicle riding is a growing sport in Wisconsin. Along with the privilege of enjoying the sport comes the responsibility of making sure you are operating these vehicles safely and responsibly. ATV and UTV operators born on or after Jan. 1, 1988 who are at least 12 years old for ATV(and at least 16 years old for UTV) must complete an ATV and UTV safety certification course in order to operate on public ATV/UTV trails and areas in Wisconsin. DNR Conservation Wardens recommend all ATV and UTV operators complete a safety course.
• Over 500 miles of fully interconnected riding opportunities.
• Oconto County is bisected from south to north by the Nicolet State Recreational Trail (NSRT) that serves as the “main highway” for access to the various types of riding available.
• In northern Oconto County, most of the land off Hwy 32 is part of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. There are many miles of interconnected trails and unpaved scenic forest roads to explore. Townsend, Lakewood, and Mountain are on the NSRT and provide unloading areas and services, including gas and food.
• South and east of Mountain is “sand country.” Much of the riding here is on county forest land. There is an unloading ramp, parking, and restroom located at locator number 465. You could spend all day riding the scenic loops in this area.
• Further south of Hwy 32, the NSRT goes through more open farm country, passing Suring and Gillett, where ATV/UTV
parking areas and services are available. The NSRT ends south of Gillett, but many road routes are available to ride further south to Green Valley and beyond.
• Our county map highlights several “preferred road routes” in blue connected to the NSRT. Using these routes makes riding to most other parts of the county easy. A QR code on the map lists the various riding opportunities and restrictions by the municipality.
• Riding maps are free of charge by requesting them online at www.ocontocounty.org and at the many gas and food stops along the NSRT.
• All six local ATV clubs in the county have ads on the map and will be glad to help visitors new to the areas they represent.
• Ride only where permitted. Don’t cut corners, and stay within the trail markers.
• Be courteous to other riders and hikers on the trail.
• Ride on the right side of the trail.
• When riding downhill, yield to uphill traffic. Uphill traffic may have difficulty starting again after stopping.
• When you see others coming towards you, slow down and proceed with caution.
• If you meet skiers, horses, or hikers on snowshoes coming from the opposite direction, slow down, pull over, and yield the right-of-way.
• Be safe and considerate when you stop along the trail. Never stop side-by-side, in the middle of the trail, at the crest of a hill, or around a corner on the trail. Also, never block an intersection. Remember to shut off your engine.
• Leave gates as you find them.
• Report downed trees and trail maintenance needs to land managers or snowmobile clubs. Email tourism@ocontocounty.org.
• Carry out what you carry in.
When you approach a groomer, either from behind or straight-on, employ the same level of respect we encourage when you approach other groups of snowmobiles. These trail workers help make your ride a more pleasant one, and for their efforts they more than deserve the right of way. If you are approaching a groomer head-on, pull over to the side, stop and allow the groomer to pass. If you are stuck behind a groomer, allow them to acknowledge your presence and pull over so you can safely pass. Pass slowly, be aware of your surroundings and only pass when you have plenty of room and a clear line of sight.
This is a self-guided shopping trip, so find the perfect road trip companion, grab your map, and hit the road. Explore shops and communities that are hidden treasures throughout Oconto County.

If you enjoy rustic camping, but aren’t quite ready to give up all the comforts of home, then the Boulder Lake Campground is just for you. This campground features electricity at some sites, an RV dump station, three shower and flush toilet facilities, an expanded beach and amphitheater. Vault toilets and hand pumps still exist for those that prefer the rustic camping experience.
For groups of friends and relatives who wish to escape to a nicely wooded setting, Boulder Lake Campground may be the best. All group sites are reservable. Six sites are available for small groups up to 16 people and four sites can accommodate large groups up to 30 people in addition to the 89 single family sites.
The campground has a picnic area, swim beach and boat landing. Fishing is good in the 362 acre Boulder Lake which has walleye, northern pike,
bass, and panfish. Several nearby streams offer trout fishing, too. The nearby Wolf River has opportunities for world class white water canoeing, rafting and trout fishing.
The campground also features a hiking trail. A wooden boardwalk begins your journey into another world of primitive bog vegetation, deer trails, squirrels' nests, and the workings of woodpeckers. Hike up and down the ridges around a large open bog area. The huge boulders you'll see are the calling cards left behind when the last glacier receded and formed the rugged terrain over 10,000 years ago. Campers can access the trail from several points in the campground.
If you plan to come on a summer weekend, get an early start! Even though this is the Chequamegon-Nicolet's largest campground, campsites fill up fast and reservations are encouraged.

When you step inside The Shop on Main for the first time, you’re in for a real treat. This isn’t your typical coffee shop. The Shop on Main is a feast for the eyes. Decorated in a vintage industrial motif, The Shop on Main repurposes antiques in charming ways. A railroad depot wagon holds merchandise. A 1940s forklift serves as a table. The wood from an old bowling alley forms a countertop. Gifts and home décor fill every shelf and wall space in the 1930s-era building located at 821 Main St., Oconto.
Owner and artist Lynn Hearley blended history and artistry to create a welcoming atmosphere for patrons. The Shop on Main, opened in July 2021, gives local artisans an outlet to sell their work, while also providing a place for people to socialize over a cup of coffee or tea.
Serving Coffee, Tea & Ice Cream
Stone Creek Coffee, made by a small roaster in Milwaukee, is available hot or iced. Piper & Leaf artisan loose leaf tea, made by an Alabama company, is available hot, iced, sparkling, or as a frother. The Shop on Main also carries a selection of bakery favorites and eight creamy flavors of Ashby’s Sterling ice cream, made in Ludington, Mich.
Rich in Oconto history, The Shop on Main formerly was used as Massey-Harris tractor dealership and Oldsmobile dealership. Built in 1936, the building is equipped with the oldest electric garage door opener in the city of Oconto. Although the opener is still visible at the coffee shop, it’s no longer operational. However, a working garage door opens to accommodate outdoor seating, when the weather permits.
Sit Back, Sip and Snack at Lakewood’s Coffeehouse, Wine
For Rebecca Swanson, Lakewood has always been her happy place. Her parents built a cabin near Paya Lake over 50 years ago, and Rebecca has been traveling “Up North” to her second home with her dad and siblings since birth. So, it’s no surprise that Lakewood is the location of her and her husband David’s latest culinary endeavor. Rebecca and David Swanson operate Braise North, a coffeehouse and wine bar in Lakewood that opened in November 2022.
David, a multiple James Beard nominee for “Best Chef in the Midwest,” also owns Braise Restaurant & Culinary School, a Milwaukee farm-to-table restaurant which features gourmet dining, a cooking school, and private event space.
Like its Braise counterpart in Milwaukee, Braise North features locally sourced, seasonal and simple ingredients and made-from-scratch fare.
The coffeehouse is open from 8am-12pm Saturday and Sunday. The coffeehouse menu includes house-made croissants, various pastries, seasonal quiches, and toasted market buns filled with assorted savory ingredients. Braise North’s fresh-roasted coffee and espresso is sourced from various small-batch Wisconsin coffee roasters.
In the late afternoon and evening, Braise North changes character to serve locally sourced food, global wines, and regional beers. The small-plate menu includes American and ethnic cuisine that is perfect for sharing or light appetites. A chef for 30 years, David truly gets creative with seasonal fare, melding flavors into interesting and delicious dishes available at reasonable prices. The wine bar is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night from 4pm-9pm.
In addition to the coffeehouse and small-plate selections, Braise North offers grab-and-go meals to be enjoyed at customers’ homes and cabins. Plus, Braise North carries packaged products from Wisconsin that are featured on the menu, like maple syrup, granola, and various pickled vegetables. Bottles of wine also are available for purchase.
Braise North is located at 15398 Highway 32, Lakewood, in the former 4 Seasons Diner building. The Lakewood snowmobile and ATV trail is adjacent to Braise North’s rear parking lot.
Built in 1916, the building previously was home to the Lakewood Congregational Church, then the First Presbyterian Church. The restaurant’s exterior still resembles a church, with a steeple and everything! The Swansons remodeled the facility in 2022, maintaining the building’s historic charm and enhancing the décor with an inspirational world-travel theme to spark the imagination: Let’s go places!
But before embarking on the next adventure, sit a while and relax. Sip a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and enjoy a bite to eat. Braise North’s mellow atmosphere provides the perfect backdrop for a casual visit with family and friends.
For Rebecca, Lakewood has always been a favorite place to go and quickly became a favorite of David’s after they met six years ago. Braise North makes Lakewood even more inviting as an enchanting destination in Wisconsin’s Northwoods.

Bloody Mary. Love it or hate it, the Bloody Mary is usually a show-stopper of a drink, with adornments ranging from six-inch celery stalks to a full hamburger. Part of the fun when ordering a Bloody Mary is that everyone has their own special recipe or variation. Don’t drink? Bloody Marys are one of the easiest and best drinks to turn into a mocktail by simply omitting the alcohol.
In-house made mix, robust and flavorful, garnished with pickle spear, garlic green beans, pretzels, olives, mushrooms and brussel sprouts. Use original, cucumber, citron or peppar vodka. Make it loaded with extra smoked meat and cheese!

The Oconto Area Chamber of Commerce has taken on a huge project over the last several years. This project involves the construction of a pedestrian bridge over the Oconto River from Bond Park to Holtwood Park in Oconto. The bridge has been thought of since 1975 and no City tax payer dollars will be used. Pledges and grants are being sought.
If you wish to contribute to this project, pledge forms can be found at www.ocontoareachamber.com.
