WELCOME TO NAUGATUCK VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE. Dear NVCC Donors and Friends, The NVCC Foundation rose to the challenge of fulfilling its mission to serve our students in an unprecedented time. When the pandemic struck, our talented staff under the leadership of Associate Dean of Development Angela Chapman was able to assure that our programs continued. As the College moved to remote learning and students grappled with loss of jobs, the challenge of digital access and, for many, increased family responsibilities, we adjusted our services to meet their changing needs. Those employed by the Jobs on Campus program were able to work virtually. Food insecurity became more acute for many students, so our Student Food Pantry arranged for deliveries as students no longer came to campus. Although we missed the energy and excitement of an in-person Honors Night, we are proud to have provided 203 scholarships for the academic year 2019-2020 as our program continues to grow. We also were not able to host our Leadership Breakfast, but fortunately several of our sponsors continued to make their important contributions. NVCC is an outstanding institution, providing an excellent education and support to students who will make an important contribution to their families and their communities. It is my pleasure and honor to work with a wonderful group of Board Members, Dr. Daisy Cocco De Filippis, and our new CEO Dr. Lisa Dresdner, as well as the staff to make the Foundation programs possible. Dear Friends of NVCC, Welcome to the NVCC Foundation 2020 Annual Report. Thank you for your generosity that continues to change the lives of NVCC students. The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic during this fiscal year created a critical need for our students and you were the bridge our students needed to push forward. Thank you for continuing to believe in our students and the power of education. You are sincerely appreciated for providing strength, hope, opportunity, and change. Traditionally this report is produced for the NVCC Foundation Leadership Breakfast in early spring. However, the pandemic changed our schedule a bit, so not only are you getting this report a little later than usual, but we have also rescheduled our Leadership Breakfast for fall 2021. This report also reflects our leadership change that occurred last year: Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., retired as President of Naugatuck Valley Community College on August 1, 2020 after successfully leading the college for 12 years. Upon her retirement, Lisa Dresdner, Ph.D., was appointed as CEO of NVCC. Thank you again for being constant and unwavering in your support to NVCC students. I am truly inspired by you all and look forward to continuing to work together to change lives for the better!

NVCC HIGHLIGHTS 2019-20 AUGUST 2019 Connecticut Community Foundation Awards NVCC Foundation 25,000 grant for scholarships
The NVCC Women’s LEAP program was designed to support the needs of a select group of at-risk women who, despite overwhelming challenges, demonstrated resilience and tenacity in furthering their education. This initiative enhanced their college experiences with relevant workshops and mentorships with a goal to improve retention, leading to graduation and preparing these women for meaningful careers. 100% of the Women’s LEAP cohort completed their fall 2019 semester with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and successfully continued the program through the spring semester.
OCTOBER 2019 NVCC Hosted Second Annual Alumni Advanced Manufacturing Technology Event
The Connecticut Community Foundation generously awarded the NVCC Foundation with a grant of $25,000 to support NVCC student scholarships and the NVCC Students Jobs on Campus program. Thirty-four NVCC students were supported through this generous grant.
SEPTEMBER 2019 NVCC Women’s LEAP Program Kicks Off The Women’s Giving Circle of the Connecticut Community Foundation awarded the NVCC Foundation with a $10,000 grant to implement the NVCC Women’s Lead, Empower, Achieve (LEAP) program.
Naugatuck Valley Community College Alumni Association in collaboration with the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center (AMTC) hosted a gathering of manufacturing alumni, current AMTC students, faculty and staff at the Brassworks Brewing Company. The second annual event, held in October 2019, coincident with “manufacturing month” in Connecticut, gave students and graduates an opportunity to reunite with classmates, meet industry colleagues and enjoy craft beer and food. “Although it successfully reunites alumni, students, faculty, staff and local manufacturers, the event is actually a fundraiser, that supports students pursuing careers in manufacturing,” noted Angela Chapman, Associate Dean of Development and Alumni Relations.

“We are most grateful to our sponsors, the manufacturers whose support makes this event possible. Through their sponsorships, the College raised $13,800, all of which will be used to support manufacturing students.” Manufacturing sponsors included Vision Engineering, Belimo Aircontrols, Fairchild Auto-Mated Parts, Anomatic Corporation, Marion Manufacturing, ASML, Trumpf, Fryer Machine System, Click Bond, Samson Machine, Southington Tool and Manufacturing Corporation.
It was an evening of inspiration filled with beautiful art by our alumni. The panel of alumni speakers, influential leaders in their businesses and in the community, provided role models from whom students learned work skills, confidence, and the importance of believing in yourself.
JANUARY 2020 NVCC’s Hospitality Program Awarded a Connecticut Community Foundation Grant for Senior Living Internships.
NOVEMBER 2019 NVCC Hosted Annual Alumni Speakers’ Panel Naugatuck Valley Community College hosted its second annual alumni speakers’ panel featuring a panel of three graduates. The 2019 Alumni Speakers’ Panel included John DiCarlo, Director, Municipal Shared Services, Naugatuck Valley Council of Government; David Love, M.S., Team Lead, Edgewood Chemical Biological Center; and Marijean Morelli, RN, BS., Senior Case Manager, Alexion Pharmaceuticals. The speakers began their stories from their days at NVCC and all shared in common the theme of empowerment. The event opened with a reception and art exhibit by NVCC Alumni artists, curated by Amanda Lebel, Assistant Professor of Art. Consistent with the theme of leading by example, the mixed media art exhibit featured works by alumni who produced art after graduation from NVCC. Artists included Mads Sheikh, Joshua Poole, Beth Edwards, Angel Bleggi, Sarah Kushwara, Isabella Hernandez, Jordan Antrum, Quiana Stanley, Emily Mansi, David Flook, and David Rascati.

Connecticut Community Foundation awarded a $20,000 grant to Naugatuck Valley Community College’s Hospitality Program. The grant supports Hospitality Program student internships to encourage students to explore career opportunities in local assisted living facilities. This pilot project is designed to enhance and expand the NVCC Hospitality Program by establishing an internship component that serves the needs of the aging population residing in area assisted living communities. Through this initiative, NVCC students will experience hands-on, workbased career opportunities in the fastest growing segment of the hospitality industry.

NVCC HIGHLIGHTS 2019-20 FEBRUARY 2020 Naugatuck Valley Community College Hosts Annual Donor Recognition Event NVCC President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, the NVCC Foundation and Board of Directors hosted their annual Donor Appreciation reception on February 20, 2020. Martha Bernstein, Chair of the Foundation opened the event with a warm welcome and thanks to NVCC’s donors. Bernstein explained the importance of supporting NVCC in spite of programs like the new “Debt-free college.” “Many of our students do not qualify for these funds because they are not first time or full-time students.”
The intention of this fund is to help meet the immediate needs of NVCC students during this crisis so they can experience peace of mind and academic success. Reaching out to the community, the Foundation raised over $73,105 to assist students during the pandemic. Funds came from individual donors, foundations, and businesses. Stop and Shop donated $1,000 in gift cards and the United Way of Greater Waterbury in collaboration with the Connecticut Community Foundation donated $5,000 to assist with food insecurity. The Fairfield Community Foundation awarded NVCC $7,000 to assist our Danbury Students with laptops and internet services.

Vice-Chair of the NVCC Foundation, Charles E. Pagano, Jr. was selected for this honor in May of 2020 based on his distinguished professional career and generous support of Naugatuck Valley Community College.
The first cohort of this advanced manufacturing program graduated in May 2019 with the skills needed to begin a successful career in manufacturing. Based on the interest and success of the first cohort, a second cohort will begin in Fall 2020. Students selected for the program will receive full scholarships covering tuition, books, and classroom materials.
NVCC utilized these funds in response to 554 student emergences. Like many, our students lost jobs or their parents were no longer able to support the household due to illness or job loss. NVCC was able to deliver food packages to quarantined students, and allocated emergency funds averaging $400 to help students pay rent, utilities, insurance or other emergency needs. JUNE 2020 Praxair awarded the NVCC Foundation $100,000.
Student speaker, Shakera Jones, a fourth-semester business student took the podium to thank the donors. Jones shared her own struggle with the transition from high school to college and the difference NVCC had made for her- the faculty, staff, and support from the foundation. She shared a video documenting her own growth to influence other students to take advantage of all that NVCC has to offer.
APRIL 2020 Naugatuck Valley Community College President and Foundation Establish COVID-19 Student Emergency Fund
The NVCC Foundation Board of Directors, in collaboration with President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, established the NVCC Foundation COVID-19 Student Emergency Fund to assist NVCC students struggling with financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 8
MAY 2020 Naugatuck Valley Community College Foundation, Vice Chair, Charles Pagano Honored with Presidential Medal of Honor and Naming of Respiratory Lab Commencement is the time for honoring not only graduates but also community members who have made a difference for Naugatuck Valley Community College and its students. The Presidential Medal of Honor, established in 2012, is a prestigious award presented by President Daisy Cocco De Filippis to students, faculty, staff, administrators and community members who have distinguished themselves by
NVCC Advanced Manufacturing Technology students and recipients of the Praxair scholarships.
Praxair, a subsidiary of Linde, with headquarters in Danbury, funded the Praxair Skills Development Pipeline for the second year. The community engagement program is a testament to Praxair’s commitment to developing a robust skilled trades pipeline. 9
