idden beneath the foothills of the Sierra de Almijara lies one of Spain’s most extraordinary natural treasures. The Nerja Caves (Cuevas de Nerja) have captivated visitors for more than six decades, yet their story stretches back hundreds of thousands of years. Today they remain one of Andalucía’s most visited attractions and a must-see destination for anyone exploring the Axarquía.

The caves were discovered quite by accident on 12 January 1959 when five local boys from nearby Maro were searching for bats. After squeezing through a narrow opening, they found themselves inside an enormous underground world of spectacular chambers filled with towering stalactites and stalagmites. News of the discovery quickly spread, and within a year the caves had been opened to the public.

However, the caves had already played an important role in human history.

Archaeological excavations have uncovered evidence that Neanderthals and later prehistoric communities lived here over many thousands of years.

Stone tools, pottery, human remains and remarkable cave paintings have all been discovered, making the site invaluable to archaeologists and historians alike.

The cave complex has since been declared a Site of Cultural Interest and is recognised as one of Spain’s most significant archaeological and geological monuments.

Visitors today explore around one kilometre of illuminated walkways through vast caverns where nature has sculpted breathtaking limestone formations over millions of years. One of the highlights is

the spectacular Hall of the Cataclysm, home to one of the world’s largest known cave columns, measuring approximately 32 metres high and 18 metres in diameter.

Every chamber offers something different, from delicate formations resembling chandeliers to enormous cathedral-like spaces that leave visitors speechless.

The caves are far more than a tourist attraction. They continue to be an important centre for scientific research, with large sections remaining closed to the public to protect fragile ecosystems and archaeological remains. Scientists regularly study the cave’s geology, climate and prehistoric heritage, helping us understand both the Earth’s natural history and the lives of our earliest ancestors.

culta bajo las faldas de la Sierra de Almijara se encuentra una de las joyas naturales más extraordinarias de España. Las Cuevas de Nerja han fascinado a sus visitantes durante más de seis décadas, aunque su historia se remonta a cientos de miles de años. Hoy en día siguen siendo una de las atracciones más visitadas de Andalucía y una parada imprescindible para cualquiera que recorra la comarca de la Axarquía.

La cueva fue descubierta casi por casualidad el 12 de enero de 1959, cuando cinco jóvenes del vecino pueblo de Maro salieron a buscar murciélagos.

Tras colarse por una estrecha hendidura, se topación con un enorme mundo subterráneo de salas espectaculares repleto de imponentes estalactitas y estalagmitas. La noticia del hallazgo se

extendió rápidamente y en menos de un año la gruta abrió sus puertas al público.

Sin embargo, el recinto ya había desempeñado un papel crucial en la historia de la humanidad. Las excavaciones arqueológicas han sacado a la luz pruebas de que neandertales y comunidades prehistóricas posteriores habitaron este lugar durante milenios.

Herramientas de piedra, cerámica, restos humanos e impresionantes pinturas rupestres han convertido el yacimiento en un tesoro incalculable para arqueólogos e historiadores. Desde entonces, el conjunto ha sido declarado Bien de Interés Cultural y está reconocido como uno de los monumentos arqueológicos y geológicos más importantes del país.

iluminadas a través de vastas cavernas donde la naturaleza ha esculpido impresionantes formaciones calcáreas a lo largo de millones de años. eptember is a month of contrasts.

The days are still gloriously warm here on the Costa del Sol, the sea is at its most inviting, and outdoor lunches, beach walks and evening cocktails remain very much part of daily life. Yet step into many high street fashion stores, and you could be forgiven for thinking winter has already arrived.

Suddenly, the rails are filled with charcoal greys, deep burgundies, heavy knits and black boots.

It can feel rather uninspiring when the sunshine outside is still calling for linen, sandals and vibrant colours. So how do you keep that fresh Mediterranean fashion vibe alive without feeling out of step with the changing season?

here was a real party atmosphere at ‘Joyería Agatha’ in Torre del Mar as the boutique celebrated its first anniversary, and what a celebration it was!

The doors were open, the cava was flowing, and guests were greeted with an array of nibbles and the prettiest personalised biscuits, all decorated with the Agatha name. From the moment guests arrived, there was a wonderful buzz in the boutique, with friends catching up, browsing the collections, trying things on and, of course, finding plenty of tempting purchases!

It was a lovely gathering of Torre del Mar’s style-conscious ladies, creating a relaxed and sociable atmosphere that perfectly reflects the character of Agatha.

Some guests arrived dressed to impress, while others clearly couldn’t resist adding something new to their wardrobe before they left!

And there was certainly plenty to tempt 28 OCIO magazine

A New Era for Healthcare in the Axarquía Un nuevo hospital privado en La Axarquia By: Eva Charlston

R

esidents of Vélez-Málaga and the wider Axarquía have welcomed the announcement of a major new private hospital that promises to transform healthcare in the region.

HM Hospitales has unveiled plans for the new HM Vélez-Málaga Hospital, with construction due to begin in September 2026 and the doors expected to open during the second quarter of 2028. The project represents an investment of more than €40 million and is one of the largest healthcare developments the Axarquía has seen in recent years.

The need for additional healthcare facilities has become increasingly apparent as the area’s population continues to grow. The Axarquía is home to a large and ageing resident community, while the summer months bring a significant increase in visitors. This places considerable pressure on the existing Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquía and often means patients requiring specialist treatment or complex surgery must travel to Málaga city.

The new HM Hospital aims to ease that burden by providing a comprehensive range 30 OCIO magazine

of medical services much closer to home.

Plans include more than 50 patient rooms, around 50 specialist consultation rooms, six operating theatres, adult and paediatric emergency departments, an intensive care unit, a day surgery centre and advanced diagnostic facilities including MRI, CT scanning and mammography. When fully operational, the hospital is expected to provide around 250,000 consultations, 30,000 emergency attendances and 5,000 surgical procedures each year, while creating approximately 250 new jobs.

Importantly, the new hospital is intended to complement rather than replace existing public healthcare services, offering residents greater choice and reducing unnecessary journeys to Málaga for many treatments.

For local residents, expatriates and visitors alike, the arrival of HM Vélez-Málaga Hospital represents a significant investment in the future of the Axarquía. As the region continues to expand, modern healthcare infrastructure will be essential, making this one of the most important developments for the area in recent years. n

La necesidad de reforzar la infraestructura sanitaria se ha vuelto cada vez más evidente a medida que crece la población de la zona. La Axarquía cuenta con una comunidad residente amplia, a lo que se suma el notable incremento de visitantes durante la temporada estival. Esta situación genera una importante presión sobre el actual Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquía y obliga a menudo a los pacientes que requieren atención especializada a desplazarse hasta Málaga capital.

El nuevo centro de HM Hospitales nace con el propósito de aliviar esa carga ofreciendo una amplia cartera de servicios médicos cerca de casa.

Las instalaciones contemplan más de 50 habitaciones individuales, cerca de 50 consultas de especialidades, seis quirófanos, urgencias de adultos y pediátricas, unidad de cuidados intensivos y un área de diagnóstico por imagen de última generación. A pleno rendimiento, se prevé que el hospital atienda anualmente unas 250.000 consultas, 30.000 urgencias y 5.000 intervenciones quirúrgicas, además de generar en torno a 250 nuevos puestos de trabajo.

Un aspecto clave es que el nuevo hospital llega para complementar a la red pública existente, ofreciendo a los ciudadanos una mayor capacidad de elección y evitando desplazamientos a la capital para numerosos tratamientos.

Fit For The Future ...Month four By: Ashlyn Watts

W

ell, here we are at Month 4 of my ‘Fit For The Future’ journey, and another kilo has gone! That brings my total weight loss to 7 kilos, along with an average loss of 2–3 inches off my waist, bust, hips and thighs. I’m feeling the difference, and I’m feeling stronger, fitter and more confident.

The changes aren’t just showing on the scales. I’ve now dropped a dress size, and I’m seeing more definition in my shape, which is very encouraging. I’m feeling more comfortable in my own skin.

And then there’s the bikini!

I had convinced myself that I had reached an age where I was destined to wear a bathing costume for the rest of my life. Yet this summer, I’ve been wearing my bikinis again!

I’m certainly not body perfect. There is still plenty of work to do and more 32 OCIO magazine

progress to make. But for me, wearing a bikini again is about confidence, not perfection. It’s about feeling comfortable enough in my own body again to wear what I want and enjoy the summer without worrying too much about how I look.

This month has also reminded me that getting fit isn’t about pushing yourself harder. Sometimes, the lesson is knowing when to slow down.

We headed off to Marbella for a couple of days to celebrate a family birthday, which involved fabulous food, extra drinks and a break from routine. Life is for living, and I don’t believe getting fitter means giving up everything you enjoy.

The important thing is learning how to get back on track without feeling guilty or believing that a couple of days of indulgence have undone your hard work.

So, as soon as I returned home, I was straight back into training, perhaps a little too enthusiastically! I combined gym sessions with back-to-back padel matches, determined to make up for lost time.

During one match, however, I strained my quadricep muscle.

The result? The need for a full week without training.

It taught me a lesson I should have remembered from my days as an aerobics instructor: muscles need time to recover.

Rest and recovery are just as important as training, and sometimes doing less is exactly what your body needs.

It was frustrating, but it made me realise that fitness isn’t about how much exercise you can cram into a week. It’s about finding the right balance between training, nutrition, recovery and listening to your body.

Thankfully, after a week’s rest, everything was back to normal. I eased myself into training, and I’m now much more conscious of giving my body the recovery time it needs.

That’s an important part of this journey.

Real life doesn’t stop because you’re trying to get fitter. There will always be birthdays, holidays, meals out and days when you don’t follow the plan perfectly.

Enjoy them, then get back to your routine.

I’m now looking forward to Month 5. I’m no longer thinking of this as a short-term diet or fitness challenge. It has become a lifestyle. My confidence is up, I’m seeing definition, and I’m genuinely excited to see what I can achieve next.

The problem is that turning that dream into a genuinely great golf holiday can be surprisingly complicated.

Which courses are really worth playing?

How difficult is it to obtain tee times?

Where should you stay? Should you rent a car or arrange transfers? How do you transport the golf clubs? And, particularly when travelling with a nongolfing partner, how do you create a holiday that both people will enjoy?

here is a brief, magical window every year when Southern Spain belongs to the driver once again.

As the intense glare of midsummer softens into the golden light of early autumn, the region undergoes a quiet shift. The scorching temperatures that forced us indoors or kept air conditioners humming at full blast give way to crisp morning breezes and comfortable afternoon warmth. Simultaneously, the dense ribbon of peak-summer holiday traffic along the coastal corridors begins to clear.

Lejos de los atascos interminables de julio y agosto, conducir en septiembre permite encontrar un ritmo propio.

Puedes bajar las ventanillas, contemplar el paisaje en tonos tierra mientras se suceden olivares y pueblos blancos, y apreciar la estabilidad y respuesta de un buen automóvil.

El aire es limpio, el motor respira mejor y la carretera abierta te invita a estirar el trayecto un poco más en la siguiente curva de herradura.

Una buena ruta otoñal se disfruta tanto por los kilómetros recorridos como por las paradas en el camino. Uno de los placeres más sencillos y auténticos de conducir por España en esta época es la parada improvisada.

Bajarse del coche en una tranquila venta de carretera en lo alto de la costa, pedir un café con leche recién hecho y contempla las vistas panorámicas del Mediterráneo extendiéndose al fondo nos recuerda por qué nos apasiona vivir en este rincón del mundo y explorarlo. Es una pausa donde el tiempo parece detenerse, complementando a la perfección el flujo constante de la ruta.

Ya prefieras la potencia silenciosa e inmediata de un gran turismo eléctrico moderno, el confort refinado de un SUV de lujo o las sensaciones mecánicas y puras de un descapotable clásico, septiembre es la invitación perfecta para apagar el GPS, elegir un rumbo y tomar el camino más largo de vuelta a casa. n

hen dusk falls over Southern Spain in September, the air undergoes a subtle, welcome transformation. The dense humidity of July and August gives way to a silky, balmy evening breeze. It is the finest time of the year for evening entertaining: warm enough to leave doors wide open late into the night, yet crisp enough to linger outdoors without seeking shade.

Setting the scene for a September dinner party is an exercise in effortless elegance. Ditch the formal indoor dining room and gather guests on a whitewashed terrace, a rooftop garden overlooking the Mediterranean, or beneath a pergola draped in late-blooming bougainvillaea.

The aesthetic should reflect late-summer richness.

Think natural textures and warm, organic tones: woven linen tablecloths in sand or olive hues, rustic terracotta tableware, and brushed brass cutlery. As twilight deepens, forego harsh electric lighting entirely. Cluster pillar candles of varying heights along the center of the table and string low-voltage bulbs through tree branches to cast a warm, ambient glow across the space.

Let’s talk about Rum Hablamos de Ron By: Steven Griffith

T

here is a diverse range on offer, and it’s adaptable behind the bar and in the kitchen. So let’s start with the most obvious question, what is Rum? Rum is a spirit distilled exclusively from sugar cane and is produced around the world but particularly in the Caribbean. Sometimes it feels like anything goes, but there are some loose definitions: in Europe, rum can’t be less than 37.5% alcohol, it can’t be made from sugar beet, and you can’t add other spirits to it. The primary ingredient, sugar cane, takes three different forms: as sugar cane juice (typical of the ex-French islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe), and as a syrup from boiled sugar cane juice (rare, but two examples are Ron Zacapa in Guatemala and Barbancourt in Haiti). The third and most common method is from 56 OCIO magazine

molasses, which is a by-product from making sugar.

How is rum made? Fermentation of the pressed sugar cane takes place, as with other spirits like whisky, using natural yeasts to initiate the production of alcohol.

This is left to ferment for 24-36 hours for lighter rums, and up to 72 hours for some darker rums. It is then distilled in one of three ways: single-batch ‘pot still’ rums which gain roundness and warmth but tend to be more expensive, while continuous-process ‘column stills’ like Bacardi give a lightness and fruitiness to the rum. mong the many wonderful dining spots we have the pleasure of featuring in OCIO magazine, La Restinga Beach remains one of our perennial favourites year upon year.

Tucked away on the peaceful shores of Playa Vílchez, just along the coastal road between Torrox Costa and Nerja, it is a beachside sanctuary that never fails to deliver and, in our experience, September is when this lovely venue truly shines at its absolute best.

There is a distinct magic to sitting on La Restinga Beach’s sunny terrace as the midsummer heat softens into a warm autumn breeze. It is the perfect backdrop for settling in for a long, lazy afternoon with panoramic views of the Mediterranean. On days when you simply want to completely unwind, you can also hire a beach bed for the afternoon and take full advantage of the beachside bar offering cold beers, freshly made cocktails, and soft drinks, all without leaving the beach.

to change your plans. The impressive indoor dining salon is wonderfully spacious and light-filled, ensuring you enjoy those same stunning beach views while staying cosy inside.

However, whenever we visit with friends or colleagues, there is always one standout highlight on the table: the rice. They are a genuine highlight of the menu and a complete must-try for any visitor.

ntre los muchos y maravillosos rincones gastronómicos que tenemos el placer de destacar en la revista OCIO, La Restinga Beach sigue siendo uno de nuestros favoritos indiscutibles año tras año.

Resguardado en las tranquilas orillas de la playa Vílchez, en la carretera litoral entre Torrox Costa y Nerja, este oasis a pie de playa nunca decepciona y, según nuestra experiencia, septiembre es el mes en el que este encantador lugar brilla en su máximo esplendor.

Hay una magia especial en sentarse en la soleada terraza de La Restinga Beach mientras el intenso calor del pleno verano da paso a una cálida brisa otoñal. Es el marco perfecto para disfrutar de una sobremesa larga y relajada con vistas panorámicas al Mediterráneo. Y para esos días en los que sencillamente apetece desconectar por completo, se puede alquilar una hamaca para toda la tarde y aprovechar al máximo el servicio de bar a pie de playa, con cervezas bien frías, cócteles recién preparados y refrescos, todo ello sin tener que moverte de la arena.

En la rara ocasión en que septiembre traiga algo de lluvia, no hay ninguna necesidad de cambiar de planes. Su impresionante salón comedor interior es fabulosamente espacioso y luminoso, lo que garantiza disfrutar de esas mismas e increíbles vistas al mar bien resguardado en el interior.

Aunque su ambiente costero y desenfadado es un gran atractivo, la cocina ofrece de manera constante una fantástica gastronomía mediterránea. La carta cuenta con una deliciosa variedad de platos que incluye ensaladas frescas y crujientes, reconfortantes guisos de temporada y carnes, pescados y mariscos frescos preparados de forma excepcional.

Sin embargo, cada vez que lo visitamos con amigos o compañeros de trabajo, hay un protagonista indiscutible en la mesa: el arroz. Las paellas y los arroces marineros son la gran especialidad de la casa, repletos de un sabor de una profundidad increíble y elaborados con esmero en cada ocasión.

Son un auténtico emblema de la carta y una cita obligada para cualquier visitante.

Lo que convierte a La Restinga Beach en un clásico tan duradero de la costa de

la Axarquía es la naturalidad con la que combina una alta calidad con la comodidad de un trato cercano. A pesar del excelente nivel de su propuesta gastronómica, el ambiente se mantiene cálido, acogedor y sin pretensiones. Es ese tipo de lugar donde te sientes igual de cómodo pasándote a tomar un café rápido o una copa de vino bien fría que sentándote a disfrutar de una comida completa de tarde.

Además, al contar con amplio aparcamiento gratuito junto a la playa, justo al lado de la carretera costera en el km 288, la visita resulta siempre de lo más cómoda y sin complicaciones.
