Rental prices rise across Spain R

ents across Spain for residential property are increasing, a further indication that the property market is on the road to recovery.

Over recent years, rental prices have fallen in line with sales prices, but the latest data from fotocasta.es reveals that the average rental costs reached €7.10 per square metre in July, marking a rise of 4.8% compared to the same month in 2014, Spanish News Today reports.

While these prices are still 30% lower than the peak of €10.12 reached in July 2007, it is still an indication that some of the damage caused in the global financial crash of 2008 has been repaired.

In the aftermath of the crash, sales decreased sharply across Spain, with the steepest falls happening in Aragon, where rents plummeted by 41.4%, the Comunidad (35.4%), Cantabria (35.35%) and Andalucia (27.5%).

hether you want to sell your home or just improve it so you are more confortable and happy to be living there, there are several things that experts suggest you should consider before making one single renovation or improvement to your home. Let’s start with big project renovations.

Rule 1. Make Only Renovations That Count. Experts agree that the right renovations, especially bathrooms and kitchens, affect the marketability of your home and for good reason, they have the highest rate of return of any home addition or home remodel. Estate agents agree that a gleaming kitchen with state-of-the-art appliances, fabulous flooring, stone countertops and lots of cupboard space can sell a house the instant a prospective buyer sees it. Equally, generous wardrobe space and storage is a big selling point. If you do not have much space available at present, bring in the professionals and u

Rule 3. Don’t Over improve.

Before you commit to any big project ask yourself, “Is this three-car garage or swimming pool out of character for my neighbourhood?” If the answer is yes, then think carefully before you do it. If your house is improved beyond the scope of all the neighbourhood homes that surrounds it, it is likely that the value of your home won’t be realised when it comes time to sell. There is nothing wrong with having the best house in the street, just be realistic about the maximum value that can be achieved in your area.

ow have the first few weeks been since you opened?

“We have had a very busy and challenging opening month”, said Colin. “All our grass fitters go through an intensive training course and are constantly being accredited. Most have been fitting grass for over 5 years; however the heatwave during July has been quite interesting – even for the most experienced fitter. It´s not just the long days working through the heat, but the effect it had on the materials and machinery is far different than the UK.” 18 OCIO magazine

What has been the reaction so far?

“We are extremely fortunate that all our staff share the same vision and goal on Customer Care. The final result and the customer´s feedback are the most important aspects of every job” “Customer satisfaction is clear from just a few of the jobs we did during July.”

What is the effect on owners with pets?

“Almost every job involving pets is pleasing. Most dogs seldom see grass in Spain and as soon as it´s fitted, it cheers me up the way they don´t want to get off it!”

How do you think you can improve properties here in Spain?

Unlike the UK, I find many villas in Spain have a lot of large gardens and unutilised space. Using artificial grass to create a multifunctional area, for example a putting green, makes the most of the unused space. It can also be used for parties and for children to play carpet bowls or skittles.

“If the property is for rent then there is even more appeal for potential clients, simply by offering more. The nice thing on finished landscapes is what we call u

s summer draws to a close, more and more of us start thinking about our autumn and winter wardrobes. Although here in Spain of course the warm weather continues long into what is considered to be the winter months for most other european countries.

So a difficult one to judge for all us fashion concious trend setters. The thing I find most important when considering my wardrobe as the seasons change, is colours. As strange u

Battle Back Golf Tournament In aid of Help For Heroes 7th October 2015 at Baviera Golf Club, Caleta de Velez

I

t was one winter’s evening last year, I watched a programme on Help for Heroes and they featured the Battle Back Golfers. I was amazed at the servicemen who have been injured in Afghanistan and other countries, losing limbs, and in many cases not just one limb. Most had not played golf before but had become very good golfers with low handicaps. I am a golfer, with all my limbs, and they play better than me!

Some of their stories were really awful and obviously they have to cope with the psychological side as well.

I looked up their web site, as I had an idea to invite two service personnel over at a time for some golf in Spain. The web site is set up for golf clubs to contact them, but I just filled in the message part, and I got a reply. I explained what I had in mind and they put me in touch with Lt Col Tristan Crew, who runs Battle Back Golf. He invited me to Hadley Court to meet him and some of the men. I explained about my idea, and he was very keen to send some servicemen over.

So the fund raising began. I started

at Baviera Golf Club, asking them for complimentary golf and buggies for the servicemen. Ignacio, the owner, agreed immediately. I’ve never done anything like this before but everyone has been so supportive. I have a very special friend, who has been of tremendous help. One friend had a charity lunch and raised quite a bit of money for the cause, Arkwrights, a local English Shop has a collecting tin, which we are swapping over regularly thanks to the customers that are filling the tins up so quickly. I also spent the day in Gibraltar on 22nd August and collected money outside Morrison’s purely to raise funds for the Charity Match. Several people have even donated money by selling off golf items, equipment etc.

So, I have organised eight servicemen to come to Spain on the 5th October to play golf on the 6th with GINS (Golf International Nerja Society). And on the 7th October we will have the Four Ball Better Ball Tournament. Everyone is welcome to come along and play. Please book through Baviera Golf if you would like to play on 7th

CLASSIC MGB B

y 1965 the sixties were in full swing in the UK. The Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs escaped from Wandsworth Prison, former British boxing champ Freddie Mills was found shot dead in his car, the Beatles second movie Help! was released and in September Thunderbirds was shown on ITV for the first time for kids of all ages. In sport, Jim Clark won his second F1 title plus created history by winning the Indianapolis 500 and Sir Stanley Matthews played his last First Division football match at the age of 50. And in motoring, MG introduced one of the most practical sports cars ever made.

Strange isn’t it that, back in the 1960s, as soon as a car maker introduced a convertible sports car, it couldn’t wait to put a tin lid on it. This was usually not just a removable hardtop but more likely a proper fastback, to turn a roadster into a more upmarket and far more practical GT. The reason was simple. The car makers realised that, one day, the typical enthusiast would outgrow their fun but impractical two-seater soft top as they got older, got married and

started to raise a family. But, MG reasoned, why should respectability be a byword for boring?

As soon as the MGB hit the showrooms in 1962, Abingdon was well down the road in finalising the GT offshoot that was introduced three years later, beating arch rival Triumph by 12 months with its posher fast-backed Spitfire, better known as the GT6. Both became known as a ‘poor man’s GT’, despite their expensive price tags, but this was not in a negative way. In the case of the GT6 it was the beginner’s E-type due to its similar sleek looks, while the chunkier looking but equally head turning MG was likened to the Aston Martin DB2, which was one of the original intentions.

Unbelievably, the MGB GT turns 50 this year and, over the half century it has evolved from being middle-class family man transport, to become one of the most likeable classics you could wish for – perhaps for the same practical reasons when it was new. Yet the MGB GT wasn’t always so universally loved.

At launch it seemed that MG had hit upon a winner. The MGB was blessed with a u

beautifully proportioned style that has become timeless. But there was more to this fastback MGB than a pretty face. The rear hatch provided useful carrying capacity, while the longer body resulted in an occasional rear bench seat for children. Suddenly, here was a proper sports car that could also cope with the school run and other domestic duties so there was no need for a dull saloon or, heaven forbid, a commercial-derived estate car. Add a fabric sun roof, as many did, and you could really have your cake and eat it.

What more could an enthusiast want from a car?

The end of MG in 1980 didn’t signal the end of this sports car, but rather ushered a new beginning for the car – as a ‘modern classic’. And it’s in this new life that the car has become one of the world’s best loved collectibles.

Its much touted failings when it was still in production are now part of MG’s charm. It’s still a highly attractive, classy yet classless fastback that’s practical and usable, even as a daily driver. And, best of all, back up from specialists and owners’ clubs around the world is second to none. n

Cuando MGB llego a las salas de exposición en 1962, Abingdon ya iba bien encaminado con su nuevo modelo, el cual fue introducido 3 años después, 12 meses antes de su archirrival Triumph, con su Spitfire más elegante conocido mejor por el nombre de GT 6. Los dos fueron llamados los spitfire de los pobres de forma cariñosa, aunque su precio no era barato. El GT 6 era un coche para los conductores principiantes de los E-types por su gran parecido mientras el MG, mas macizo, pero igual de bonito era como el Aston Martin DB2, lo cual era la intención inicial.

Increíblemente el MGB GT cumple ya 50 años este año, a lo largo de este medio siglo ha evolucionado de ser solo un transporte para la clase media a ser uno de los clásicos más deseados y quizás por las mimas razones de cuando era nuevo.

Sin embargo el MGBGT no era tan querido globalmente. En el lanzamiento parecía que

MG había triunfado, el MG fue bendecido con un gran estilo que parecía ser eterno.

No solo era bonito pero tenía un maletero trasero muy útil y con el cuerpo del coche más largo podía ser usado como asiento ocasional para los niños.

De repente había un coche deportivo en el cual podía llevar los niños al colegio y hacer otras tareas, por lo tanto no había necesidad de tener uno familiar. ¡¡Imagina!! ¡Un coche familiar comercializado! ¡Añádele un techo de tela, como hicieron muchos… y así de verdad podrías todo! ¿Qué más podría pedir un entusiasta de un coche?

El final de la fabricación de los MG en 1980 no indico el final de este coche deportivo pero el principio de un coche clásico y moderno. Por eso ha llegado a ser uno de los coches más deseados y coleccionables.

Sus fallos cuando estaba aún en la producción han pasado a ser sus encantos.

Todavía es altamente atractivo, elegante y a la vez es un coche práctico y útil, y con un uso diario. Una cosa buena que tiene es su apoyo maravilloso por todo el mundo de los especialistas y de los clubs de propietarios. n

speak from experience when I say that there is something quite special about Restaurante La Restinga, located on Playa Vilches on the Torrox to Nerja coast road at Km 288 (just outside of Nerja). I think it may be the unique blend of high quality dining and the delightful beachside location.

La Restinga Beach offers options for dining subject to the weather and your own preferences. The large shaded terrace is the obvious choice for many but the spacious interior dining room is also very popular on chilly evenings, not that we have many of those, whilst also being a popular escape from the heat of the midday sun should you be enjoying lunch at La Restinga Beach.

The cuisine is Mediterranean in style and is simply fantastic. Offering a selection of succulent meats, fresh seafood, spectacular salads and rice dishes which are somewhat of a house speciality and need to be tasted to be believed.

The kitchen is open all day non stop and despite being a restaurant of high quality, the ambience is very relaxed, encouraging guests to call in as they pass, if only for a chilled beer, glass of wine or a cup of

coffee whilst enjoying the lovely beach side setting and enviable views.

And if all of this wasn’t enough, La Restinga Beach has it’s own beach complete with beach bar, beach bed hire and parasols.

or experiencia propia, cuando digo que hay algo muy especial en el La Restinga Beach, ubicado en Vilches en la Playa de Nerja, carretera de la costa de Torrox a Nerja, en el Km. 288 (a las afueras de Nerja). Creo que puede ser la única combinación de comida de gran calidad situada junto a la playa.

La Restinga Beach ofrece diversas opciones para cenar al aire libre teniendo en cuenta sus preferencias personales.

The Classic Carne con Tomate Angela Perth lives in Spain and writes for many cookbooks that are published around the world. Here Angela shares with us a recipe for the classic ‘carne con tomate’.

M

eat with tomato? Doesn’t sound particularly exciting, does it? But this dish is so full of flavour, where the pork is stewed in a home-made tomato sauce until the meat almost falls apart, and yet so simple to make.

If you’re not quite convinced by the name, try it the next time you see it on offer as a tapa, and then you’ll certainly choose it for your main midday meal when you see ‘Carne con Tomate’ on a restaurant menu.

It’s a very popular, traditional dish, either out or at home, in Andalucía and is based on the ubiquitous ‘sofrito’.

You will need one kilo of cubed stewing pork. Ask for ‘un kilo de magro de cerdo en trozos’ at your Spanish butcher’s.

Gently sauté one finely chopped onion in 54 OCIO magazine

some olive oil in a large saucepan on a lowish flame. Now add one large red pepper, deseeded and chopped, although some recipes leave this out. You could use green pepper instead, or one medium sized of each colour. Add 1 or 2 cloves of chopped garlic if you want, although it’s not the done thing in some parts of Andalucía!

Brown the cubed meat, and add one kilo of chopped, ripe tomatoes, peeled and deseeded, or just cut in half across the middle and grate them on a cheese grater.

If you are using tinned tomatoes, you will need a large can of 800 grams. Cook on a high heat for a few minutes, throw in a bay leaf, salt and pepper to taste and a pinch of sugar. A touch of nutmeg adds to the flavour.

Half a glass of white wine or sherry needs to go in at this point. Cover, turn down the heat to low, and let the pork cook until it is tender and the tomatoes are reduced to a sauce. This should take around one and a half hours, but do keep your eye on it as it cooks in case the sauce begins to dry out, in which case you will need to add a little bit of hot water.

Saltear suavemente una cebolla finamente picada en un poco de aceite de oliva en una sartén grande a fuego lento. Ahora añadir una gran pimiento rojo, sin semillas y picados, aunque algunas recetas dejan esto. Usted podría utilizar la pimienta verde en lugar, o uno de tamaño medio de cada color. Añadir 1 o 2 dientes de ajo picado si lo desea, aunque no es el acto realizado en algunas zonas de Andalucía!

Dorar la carne en cubos y agregar un kilo de picada, tomates maduros, pelados y sin semillas, o simplemente cortados por la mitad a través del centro y rallarlos en un rallador de queso. Si usted está usando los tomates en conserva, se necesita una gran

lata de 800 gramos. Cocine a fuego vivo durante unos minutos, tire en una hoja de laurel, sal y pimienta al gusto y una pizca de azúcar. Un toque de nuez moscada se suma al sabor.

Medio vaso de vino blanco o jerez tiene que ir en este punto. Cubierta, baje el fuego a bajo y deje que el cerdo cocinar hasta que esté tierna y los tomates se reducen a una salsa. Esto debe tomar alrededor de una hora y media, pero no mantener el ojo en él mientras se cocina en caso de que la salsa comience a secarse, en cuyo caso usted tendrá que añadir un poco de agua caliente.

Carne con tomate va muy bien con las virutas, y no se olvide un poco de pan crujiente para absorber la salsa. n OCIO magazine

he precise scope of Salsa is highly debatable. Cuban and Puerto Rican immigrants in New York have used the term analogously to swing or soul, which refer to a quality of emotionally and culturally genuine music in the African American community. In this usage Salsa connotes a frenzied, “hot” and wild musical experience that draws upon or reflects elements of Latin culture, regardless of the specific style.

Why eat salad?

t really doesn’t take a sceintist to tell you that eating salad is a fantastic way to work in a couple of servings of vegetables and/or fruit to your daily diet. Salads are on the menu of almost every restaurant you can think of and you can make a green salad at home in just 5 minutes, armed with a bag of pre-washed salad greens, a few carrots or other veggies, and a bottle of light salad dressing.

Not only are they healthy but salads can even be fun, lots of textures, colours, and flavours to play with, so even young ones can enjoy them!

Apart from tasting great, salads do have some proven health benefits. For years experts have agreed that we all need to eat more fruits and vegetables (especially dark green and orange vegetables), all popular salad ingredients and there is plenty of evidence to suggest that nutrientrich plant foods contribute to overall health.

likely have higher blood levels with a host of powerful antioxidants (vitamin C and E, folic acid, lycopene, and alpha and beta carotene) especially if your salad includes some raw vegetables. Antioxidants are substances that help protect the body from damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals.

Researchers have noted a link between eating lots of fruits and vegetables and lower risks of many diseases, particularly cancer. A recent study from the National Cancer Institute suggests that people whose diets are rich in fruits and vegetables may have a lower risk of developing cancers of the head and neck. Foods found to be particularly protective include beans and peas, string beans, peppers, tomatoes, carrots, apples, nectarines, peaches, plums, pears, and strawberries.

If losing weight is your goal, you may want to start your meals with a salad. Studies have shown that eating a low-calorie first

course, like a green salad of 150 calories or less, enhances feelings of fullness and reduces the total number of calories eaten during the meal.

And did you know that eating a little good fat (like the monounsaturated fat found in olive oil, avocado and nuts) with your vegetables appears to help your body absorb protective phytochemicals, like lycopene from tomatoes and lutein from dark green vegetables. Interestingly, the avocado-eaters amongst us will absorb eight times more alpha-carotene and more than 13 times more beta-carotene (both of which are thought to help protect against cancer and heart disease) than those of us who prefer our salad without avocado.

If you dress your salad with a little olive oil, there may even be some additional years in it for you. Italian research on people aged 60 and older has suggested that a diet that includes plenty of olive oil and

Las ensaladas están en el menú de casi todos los restaurantes que conocemos y es un plato que se puede hacerse en casa en tan sólo 5 minutos, utilizando una bolsa de verduras pre-lavadas, algunas zanahorias, otros vegetales y una botella de aderezo light para ensaladas.

No sólo son saludables, sino que pueden llegar a ser divertidas, una gran cantidad

de texturas, colores y sabores para jugar, por lo que incluso los más jóvenes !pueden disfrutarlas!

Aparte del placer de degustar su gran variedad, ellas también ofrecen algunos beneficios para la salud.

Durante años, expertos han estado de acuerdo de que todos tenemos que comer más frutas, vegetales y legumbres (especialmente las de color verde oscuro y naranja), todos los ingredientes de la ensalada son muy populares y hay una gran evidencia de que son ricos en nutrientes que contribuyen a la salud en general.

Si con frecuencia come ensaladas verdes y especialmente si incluye algunas verduras crudas, lo más probable es que su sangre presente mayores niveles de una serie de potentes antioxidantes (vitamina C y E, ácido fólico, licopeno y alfa y beta-caroteno). Los antioxidantes son sustancias que ayudan a proteger

el cuerpo contra el daño causado por moléculas dañinas, llamadas radicales libres.

Los investigadores han encontrado relación entre comer muchas frutas y verduras y reducir los riesgos de varias enfermedades, especialmente el cáncer.
