Add Some Colour D
ecorating your home can be fun, especially if you want to add a little colour. One of the easiest ways that you can add some colour is to invest in a bright rug. This works really well, especially if you aren’t sure that you want to commit to one colour as a rug can always be moved of course. Choosing a bold rug is a great way to fill a room that is predominantly filled with whites and greys. If you don’t want to choose a block colour you could always choose a patterned rug that will add some colour and perhaps just the right amount of fun. Having dark curtains in your living

room is great for blocking out the bright sunlight but it can give off a dull impression of the room, so maybe, some good quality curtains but in a lighter colour would be better for you. To really brighten up a room think about some colourful art on the walls. Having some bright art in your living room will not only add colour but it makes the room interesting and creative. ecorar tu casa puede ser divertido, especialmente si quieres añadir un poco de color.

have a look around you are sure to find something that will look amazing in your living room and create a talking point for when guests visit. Another great and somewhat obvious way to add colour to your living room is with some brightly coloured cushions. Bold reds and yellows look great in a neutral living room and you can even mix and match colours or patterns. The texture of your cushion is up to you but don’t be afraid to get creative and see what you can come up with. If you want, you can match your cushions to your curtains or throws but, personally, I prefer to have just one bold burst of colour rather than having too much in 10 OCIO magazine
the one room. Let’s not forget about Mother Nature and some brightly coloured flowers or plants. Whether the plants are real or artificial is entirely up to you and really makes very little difference in terms of decor. However, do try and be bold and brave with the colours and don’t just settle for green. Invest in beautiful vases that will hold your plants and flowers and make them the centrepiece of your living room. If you are going add some colour to your living room, then you need to be willing to get creative and don’t be afraid to be bold and make sure the room has as much natural light as possible, it will really help your colours stand out. n

Olive Tree Logs W
ith the colder months fast approaching, it is almost time to light up your fireplace and enjoy a little winter warmth. Nothing beats the magical feeling of being cocooned in front of the fire with the warmth from the logs seeping in through your skin and, even better if the warmth is generated by natural logs that do no harm to the environment. Instead of burning any logs that are available, olive wood logs provide great heat and a wonderful aroma when used in an open fire. Quite obviously, olive wood logs come from the Olive tree. In Spain and Portugal the trees felled for the purpose of creating logs for our fires, are very old and are felled because they no longer produce good quality Olives. The felling of these trees makes space for new trees to be planted, sometimes up to 5 new trees being planted for each old one felled because of the dense trunks and root system they 14 OCIO magazine

have after so many years growing. For what seems like forever, parts of the olive tree have been used by Mediterranean civilisations for many aspects of life and was always said to be therapeutic and pleasant. Probably the other reason being that olive trees were grown in such abundance. But either way, the Olive tree has always been put to the very best use and not least of all in the creation of logs for our summer barbecues and winter fires. Olive wood is very dense which makes it burn very well. It burns for much longer than most other woods, making it more economical as you need to use less. Also, it does not have a high sap content like other wood, making it ideal for our home
fires and barbecues. The good thing about olive logs is that they do not endanger the environment. At home, they also keep the environment from being polluted, even though one may resort to using the fireplace almost on a daily basis throughout the winter months. As a final thought, when your wood is delivered, do be prepared to store it correctly. Naturally you will want to keep it dry but beyond that, think about storing the logs on a wood pallet perhaps to get it off the ground. Wood left on the ground in a disorganised pile won’t allow enough air-flow to keep the wood sufficiently dry from the damp and wet air of the winter months. To properly dry your wood, or what’s called “seasoning’, the wood ideally needs a place where the sun can warm it and the wind can blow through it. This will properly season your wood giving you a longer burn time and lots more winter warmth. n
C

WINTERSTYLE W
ith the winter almost upon us, it is time to organise ourselves for those chilly days and colder nights. However, staying stylish in winter is not as easy as it is in summer and, showing off your style while still staying warm can be a challenge. After all, it’s tough to see your outfit when it’s covered up by a big jacket. What’s a stylish girl to do? Don’t worry, you don’t have to forgo looking good to keep from getting cold. There are many ways to dress so you can stay warm and still show off your fashion sense, and none of them require breaking the bank. Here are some tips for braving the cold and still looking hot: Invest in a classic and stylish coat. Your coat is the most important part of your

winter wardrobe, so invest in a fabulous one that will last you many years. Remember, if you are making a long term investment then be careful of choosing a coat that is too modern that may go out of style before it needs replacing. Pick one up in black if you want a basic coat that goes with everything, but don’t be afraid to invest in something a little flashier if you find one in an amazing shade of red or hot pink. on el invierno casi encima, es hora de organizarnos para esos días fríos… y esas noches aún más frías. Switch it up with two coats. If it’s in your budget, consider buying two winter coats this year - one for everyday, and one for special occasions. That way you can alternate them and keep your winter wardrobe looking fresh. For example, I have one basic black coat for everyday that I spent a little more on, and a cheaper cobalt blue “statement” coat for nights out or whenever I feel like standing out a little more. Winter shawl If you find a winter coat just too bulky then go for a stylish shawl. A good quality shawl will keep you every bit as warm as a coat but can look so much more stylish. Teamed with a sweater underneath and a pair of good denims and you have a classic winter look that will take you anywhere. Winter accessories Accessorising isn’t just for regular outfits - you can (and should) accessorise your outerwear as well! Bright scarves, cute hats, and colourful gloves are your best friends during the winter months. Even better, they’re so cheap that there’s no reason not to buy a bunch in different colours. In recent years I’ve been in love with Pashmina scarves. They’re really warm, come in so many colours, and go with almost everything. They’re perfect paired with a basic coat to add a pop of bright colour to an otherwise dull outfit. Winter boots. One of my favourite things about winter fashion is that I have an excuse to buy cute boots. Boots are so versatile in winter, and if you get the right pair, you’ll have the perfect 24 OCIO magazine
footwear for almost any occasion. A great pair of boots is a must have if you want to be stylish in winter. Remember that being warm is still the most important thing. At the end of the day, no matter how cute your winter outfit is, if it doesn’t keep you warm, it’s not doing its job. That’s why it’s crucial to spend a little more money on a quality coat that will keep you toasty instead of going for a cheap yet fashionable jacket.

Sufre de ciática, Migrañas o Artritis? by Penelope Knight Dipl Ac., RRPr.
I
f you have ever experienced Sciatica, lower back pain, Migraines or Arthritis, then you will know how painful and debilitating it can be. Acupuncture and Medical Qigong can help relieve your pain. Acupuncture, Acupressure and Qigong have been used in China for centuries to relieve pain, it involves the insertion of very fine needles or pressure to specific acupuncture points on the body. These points activate the body to release endorphins, the body’s natural pain killer, and affects the area of brain that governs Serotonin impacting our mood. If you are a back pain sufferer, try massaging a point directing behind your knee, called “Weizhong” in the knee crease at midway point between the two tendons, bend your knee to best locate the point. Massaging here will benefit the lower back and your knees. For helping to relief Migraines a helpful point is on your hand called “Hegu”, on the back of the hand between your thumb and index finger, squeeze the thumb against the base of your index finger, the point is found at the highest point of the bulge of the muscle and is level with the end of the crease. Massage here to help relief your head pain. Just a note of caution do not massage this point if you are pregnant as it can induce labour. When treating your pain we look at your whole body, your constitution and any other symptoms you have, we seek the cause of the pain and treat the energetic pathways and organs to move energy blockages leading to a more balanced body. Please call me on 635 538 441 to discuss your pain challenges and experience pain relief naturally. n 30 OCIO magazine
Do you suffer from back pain, sciatica, migraines or arthritis? S

utumn is the perfect time to visit the city and get to know some of our fabulous eateries - after the hustle and bustle of summer and before the Christmas rush. And the best way to sample lots in one hit? A tapas crawl! I always recommend ordering one tapa size portion between two people. If you love it and it’s not enough, you can always order more! Sit at the bar, get friendly with the staff and order little by little. When you are ready to move on, pay your bill and head to the next spot. Traditional Tapas The cities’ smaller side-streets are a haven for traditionalists. Get lost in the narrow streets leading from all the main squares in the historical centre and you might just stumble upon a gem.

Meson Mariano (C/Granados) has been owned and run by Mariano himself since 1970. This family business is the locals’ favourite and it’s not hard to see why! Get there before 2.30 to get a seat in the bar area and be sure to order the house speciality, artichokes (served in 6 different ways). Bodeguita El Gallo is tucked away in beautiful C/San Agustin but could be mistaken for a tourist trap with its terrace right opposite the entrance to the Picasso Museum. However, step one foot inside and the flamenco music and wall-mounted bull’s head are tell-tale signs of the authenticity. Husband and wife team Pepe and Mierei took over the restaurant from Pepe’s parents, who still live in the house next door! The must-try dish of the house is, for me, the flamenquin (pork loin rolled up with ham, green peppers, cheese and deep fried). El Almacen Del Indiano is a hop, skip and a jump from Malaga’s main square, Plaza de la Constitución. The thing I love most about this place, is that not only can you enjoy u 38 OCIO magazine
This month I had the pleasure of visiting In & Out at their brand new, stunning state of the art centre in Calle Puerta Buenaventura, in the heart of Malaga’s old town. I was welcomed by my therapist, Vanesa, who took me to the treatment room and got me ready for an hour of pure luxury and relaxation. I selected their signature facial - the jewel facial, which uses 24 karat gold leaf laminate. Gold is used for its anti-bacterial properties. It helps improve blood circulation, removes toxins from the skin, lightens pigmentation and reduces production of Melanin and rejuvenates the skin. Perfect for after the long, hot summer here in Malaga. Gold also stimulates collagen production in the skin. This helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Yes please! Rumour has it that even Cleopatra herself used gold masks on a nightly basis to keep her skin glowing, hydrated, and radiant. And if it’s good enough for Cleopatra, it’s good enough for Hanni Martini. I left feeling utterly pampered and my skin was visibly glowing. I didn’t put any make-up back on for the rest of the day!

Riogordo y la axarquía by Mark West
R
Riogordo... and the
R
Axarquía
iogordo is a delightful and traditional Andalusian village in the region of the Axarquía. Situated close to the impressive Lake Viñuela, it is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The village of Riogordo, like many of the villages in the region, was named after a specific characteristic of the village and in the case of Riogordo it was the river La Cueva that runs through it - the waters were known locally as being “fat” with minerals, hence the name Riogordo. Riogordo is best reached via the main roads, Casabermeja (A-45) and Colmenar (A-356). Alternatively, if you have plenty of time, take the direct route, the old Malaga to Granada A-7000 road through the ‘Montes de Malaga’. It is a lovely route with fabulous
scenery but does require a relaxed approach to time. The hamlet became a village in its own right in 1552. Around the 17th century, livestock farming and sweet wine production began to bring great prosperity to the village and the population continued to grow, establishing itself as a thriving village. The close proximity to the coast, Malaga, the airport and the motorway infrastructure provides easy links to the outside world whilst maintaining a small and friendly village community which to this day, continues to attract residents that enjoy the relaxed lifestyle that village life brings. It is popular with foreigners that choose Riogordo as their holiday home or even permanent home and it is simply a lovely village to visit and explore. n

Lamborghini Urus L
amborghini can be credited with creating some of the most iconic and exciting cars in history. The Muria, Countach and Murcielago are all poster cars of their era; magnificent wedge-shaped supercars, powered by enormous V12 engines draped in sharp Italian suits. On the surface, at least, it’s difficult to say the same about the new Urus. The Urus has a very different brief, to help double Lamborghini’s sales figures and inflate the bank balance. Nothing more, nothing less. The public’s insatiable appetite for SUVs, and the hefty profit margins attached to them, means Lamborghini can’t ignore the segment any longer. In the UK, the 48 OCIO magazine
Italian firm expects to sell between 300 and 400 vehicles per year. In its softest of seven driving modes – Strada (Italian for street) – the Urus has a suppleness to its ride quality quite unlike any Lamborghini before it. That is, however, almost entirely down to the Audi running gear beneath the skin. Our test car rode on enormous 22-inch alloy wheels, which sniff out ruts and potholes on the road, but on the whole, the Urus does a canny impression of a big, comfortable SUV. Most Urus’ are unlikely to face more challenging terrain than a leafy side street in London, but the three off-road modes – Neve (snow) and Terra (gravel) and
Sabbia (sand) – should ensure it’s ready for every eventuality. Flick it to its most aggressive Corsa setup and the Urus undergoes a dramatic character transformation; it hunkers down to the tarmac on its air suspension, the exhaust volume is ratcheted up, and the whole powertrain takes on supercar-like aggression. For something so big and heavy (it weighs 2.2 tonnes) the way the Urus can slingshot itself from a standstill to licenselosing speeds is astounding. Lamborghini says 0-62mph takes 3.6 seconds – and it feels every bit as quick. A deep-chested bellow erupts from the quad-tailpipes as you pin the throttle. It’s obnoxiously loud,
u
“The Lamborghini Urus is a step in a different direction for the company that is credited with creating some of the most iconic and exciting cars in history but, the lucrative SUV market simply cannot be ignored...not even by Lamborghini”
only a very different soundtrack from the high-pitched scream you’d get from one of the company’s V12s. Lamborghini has thrown a whole load of tech at the Urus to make it feel like a supercar on stilts. Active rear steering, active anti-roll bars, adaptive four-wheel drive and carbon-ceramic brakes the size of satellites, all combine to help the Urus go, handle and stop as effectively as possible. When it comes to being a large SUV, the Urus scores pretty well. The 616-litre boot is big enough for a family of four and comes fitted with luggage rails to secure loose items. Despite its size there’s only really enough space for two adults in the u

Given that the Urus is sold as a luxury SUV, it is not short on luxuries. Leather sport seats, sat-nav, cruise control and a top view camera all come as standard. Night vision, a panoramic roof and a 3D B&O sound system are all on the options list. All in all it is a fabulous vehicle, as you would expect, but what about the price I hear you say? Well, you remember the old adage that says if you have to ask, you can’t afford it, the Lamborghini Urus fits nicely into this bracket with a price tag in the UK of £165,000…see, you wish you hadn’t asked now don’t you. n adaptativa y los frenos de carbono cerámico del tamaño de los satélites se combinan para ayudar a los Urus a ir, manejar y detenerse de la manera más eficaz posible.

Coffee Culture
odern coffee houses are quite a contrast to what Spanish coffee houses used to be like in the late 19th century. Back then, coffee houses were the places where intellectuals, artists, poets, writers and philosophers alike, gathered. The surroundings bristled with good taste and luxurious fixtures. Then, as it still is now, cafés were places to see and be seen, although the atmosphere was more restrained, less casual and more akin to that of a fine dining restaurant. Customers were served by elegant waiters dressed in black tie. Now though, even if a person visited a café alone, it would be impossible to feel lonely. Spanish cafés are boisterous, proving to be a lively backdrop to any conversation, providing a near constant stream of hissing banging and grinding as each cup of freshly ground coffee is prepared. One of the most popular drinks at breakfast, or at any other hour in Spain is café con leche. The beverage is served by 54 OCIO magazine
Because coffee and conversation go hand in hand it is not surprising that coffee bars are the social centres of most villages, towns and cities throughout Spain simultaneously pouring hot, dark coffee and steaming hot milk into a cup. The preparation of the drink can be a source of anxiety for the uninitiated, seeing as how both liquids are carried to the table in giant pots balanced on the same tray. Where the weather is colder, locals prefer a carajillo to get their day started. Self-proclaimed pundits hold that coffee is second only to drinks that contain alcohol as the most popular beverage in the country. Coffee is also a mainstay during the mid morning/early afternoon break known as merienda, where café solo is a firm favourite for many. Generally, each meal is accompanied or ended with coffee, and of course, it’s needed to get started again after that 2 hour siesta. It’s also an apt way to end a day, especially after a particularly long and gruelling tapas bar
crawl. At the end of a long day, a carajillo comes in handy to revive the spirits. Hardly anyone gets their coffee “to go”; having a coffee is an end in itself. The emphasis is on creating close social bonds, and a café is often the social hub of any given neighbourhood. In Spain, a cafe isn’t just a convenient rest stop where one orders a coffee and pastry for the simple purpose of refuelling. It’s also a place to watch passers-by, read a newspaper, think, or even make a phone call. Given that many of the cafés also serve decent food, although menu choices may be limited, it is incredibly easy to while away a few leisurely hours just dawdling over coffee like the locals do. Why else would pastries accompany the coffee if not to give a person a reason to linger a little while longer? n

he most difficult thing about eating in Italy is that you can’t try everything. Every day you have a finite number of meals, and a finite amount of space in your stomach, whereas there seem to be an infinite number of Italian dishes that you “absolutely need to try”. From regional specialties to the finest seasonal delicacies, you would need multiple lifetimes to sample all the best Italian food, and that’s before you even consider dessert and drinks. However, there are several dishes that would be considered iconic to Italian cuisine. Pizza: There’s perhaps no dish that is as common or as representative of the country as the humble pizza. Easy, cheap, and filling, pizza has long been a common snack or meal, especially in Naples where tomato sauce was first added. When the Italian Queen Margherita came through the bustling city on a tour of her kingdom in 1889 she asked to try this dish that she saw so many of her subjects eating. A local entrepreneur served her the now legendary 58 OCIO magazine

combination of tomato sauce, mozzarella and basil, creating (or more likely, branding) the Margherita pizza. Bottarga: The only way to describe bottarga is “Sicilian Caviar”. In August and September southern Italians take the roe from grey mullets, salt it, press it, and then leave it to air dry for six months. The result is a solid hunk of eggs the colour of amber and blood oranges that, when sliced and eaten or grated over pasta, blossoms into a gloriously savoury and smoky bouquet. Lasagna: Like most Italian dishes, its origins are hotly contested, but we can at least say that’s its stronghold is in the region of Emilia-
Romagna, where it transformed from a poor man’s food to a rich meal filled with the ragù, or meat sauce. Fiorentina Steak: A bistecca fiorentina, or Florentine T-bone steak, covers all of the characteristics of Italy’s best dishes. It is a specific cut of meat from a specific cow prepared in a very specific way all within the confines of a specific region. In the case of the enormous bistecca fiorentina, it’s a T-bone steak cut thick from the loin of a Chianina cow raised in Tuscany. No sense in asking for a medium-well done steak here, the meat is too thick to even think about it! Risotto: While southern Italy is often called the country’s bread basket, Northern Italy, especially Lombardy and Piedmont, are its rice bowl. The Arborio and Carneroli varieties are the best to use in Risotto, mixing with stock and stirring until they form a velvety semi-soup that perfectly conveys the flavours of anything cooked with it. Carbonara: if there is one real pasta that everyone should try at least once, it is the u

carbonara. This dish is deceptively simple – spaghetti, eggs, pecorino cheese, cured guanciale, and black pepper – but takes a lifetime to master and a good version will change your life. Arancini & Supplì: My Sicilian friends would be having some stern words with me if I did not include their beloved freshly-fried rice balls. These starch bombs appear in bars, restaurants, and market stalls all over Italy Gelato: No trip to Italy is complete without gelato! If you’re tempted to have a scoop (or two) a day don’t worry, it’s totally normal to eat gelato on a regular basis in Italy, especially in the summer. So there you have it, a quick round up of what I consider to be iconic Italian dishes that I sincerely hope you will try and enjoy whenever you get the chance. n – espagueti, huevos, queso pecorino, carne curada y pimienta negra – pero lleva toda una vida dominarla y un buen plato cambiará tu vida.
As summer leaves and the colder winter months join us for a short while it is time to forget about a Mojito and a Pina Colada and instead try an Admiral’s Rum & Brandy Punch or a hot Chai Spice...perfect to keep out the winter chill.
62 OCIO magazine
J
ust as people are looking for amusing beverages to cool them off during the heat of summer, when the mercury drops, we also find ourselves in need of a favourite tipple that will fight off the winter chill. We have all enjoyed the summer cocktails with Mojitos, Pina Coladas, Rum Punches and Cava concoctions but as the winter months take hold we need something a little more in keeping with the season. Winter cocktails have certain similarities, as one might guess. Many of them are served hot and as such will require less umbrellas and pineapple slices and more cinnamon, cream and chocolate. Clearly, a delicious winter cocktail will require a reckless disregard for calorie counting. The most curious underlying theme of all is that
most winter cocktails will indeed resemble a children’s drink like hot cocoa, albeit revved up with a shot of a little tummy warmer. Best of all, winter cocktails are easy to make and can be enjoyed après-ski, aprèssledding, après-snowball fighting, aprèssnowman-making and even après-lazing around in front of the fire on a blustery afternoon. They are designed to be made for as few as one or as many as you like. After all, the festive season is just around the corner and visitors will be calling by. With a few winter cocktail recipes on hand, (ones that you have already practiced with of course), you will not only make your guests feel welcome, but also, you will have fun in the creating and serving of your welcome drinks. n
