escribed by many as ‘the lake district’ of the Axarquia, Lake Vinuela is named after the small Andalucian white village of Vinuela close to the point where the rivers Velez, Guaro and Seco were dammed to create this spectacular lake/reservoir. Lake Viñuela is set in a stunning landscape and has a capacity of 170,000,000 cubic metres of water.

The lake is 15 minutes inland from the Coastal town of Torre del Mar and is a man-made reservoir that not only provides a much-needed water supply but has also been instrumental in creating a picturesque landscape within an already glorious rural locale. Prior to the creation of the reservoir, extensive archaeological excavations were carried out, producing evidence of Neolithic and Roman settlements, demonstrating the longevity of this area’s historic legacy.

As you circumnavigate the lake you will pass a number of delightful villages including Canillas de Aceituno, Alcaucin, Periana and Riogordo to name but a few.

hether gripping a steering wheel or washing dishes, hands are the workhorses of the body.

They are exposed to sunlight, extreme temperatures, and a lot of wear and tear. By age 30 skin-cell production decreases by 10 percent, making your skin less efficient at repairing itself. The tops of the hands, where the skin is thin, can show signs of age first― unlike the thicker-skinned, palms and when hands lose plumpness, due to the breakdown of collagen and elastin, veins and knuckles start to look more prominent. But do not fear, there are things we can all do to reduce the ageing process, starting with wearing gloves whilst washing the dishes or cleaning. The use of harsh household cleaning products without gloves must be avoided at all cost.

Rubber gloves are inexpensive and really are your hands best friend.

With the passing of the years your body starts to produce less oil, so nails can become dry and break easily. The answer is a good moisturiser that can be applied in the morning and at night, at night being most important.

orsche sells nearly as many Cayenne luxury crossovers as 911s, Boxsters, and Caymans combined. So with the 2015 Porsche Cayenne refreshed and heading to dealers this November, we wonder...is it ready for the luxury SUV competition?

Porsche has made big price hikes for the model-year 2015 Cayenne. At least for now, the naturally aspirated V-6 is gone as a base model, leaving the Cayenne Diesel as the least expensive way to step into Porsche’s best-seller. Like all 2015 Cayennes, the Cayenne Diesel gets a restyled front clip with airblades that direct air to the intercoolers. Porsche has also updated the LED rear lights, the number plate surround, the boot handle and the way the rear lights are better integrated into the boot as it lifts, though those details might better be appreciated in person.

Status-conscious Cayenne owners may be happy to know that, like the BMW X5, the Porsche now features exhaust outlets that are integrated into the rear bumper.

Inside, there’s a multifunction sport steering wheel with gear shift paddles.

Rear-seat ventilation is now an option.

Interestingly, there’s no mention just yet of a stretched Cayenne coming onto the forecourts that could compete directly with Range Rover and other super-luxury SUVs. No longer using a V-8 engine, the 2015 Cayenne S sports an eight-speed automatic and a twin-turbo 3.6-litre V-6, both offering a fine alternatve to the outgoing V-8. The real advantages will be in the overall driving range and naturally a vastly improved fuel economy. In terms of speed (it is a Porsche after all), Porsche estimates a 0-62 mph time of 7.2

seconds. The 2013 model got to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds in a comparison for which it was placed second, behind the Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel, but ahead of the Mercedes-Benz ML350 Bluetec and Volkswagen Touareg TDI. At the top of the 2015 Cayenne lineup is the Turbo model. Porsche says the 2015 Cayenne Turbo will go from 0-62 mph in 4.2 seconds on to a 173-mph top speed.

Personally I can’t wait to get a BMW X5 M, Range Rover Sport SVR, Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG, and a Porsche Cayenne Turbo on the same track at the same time.

Now that will be a test day to remember. n

Porsche ha aplicado grandes incrementos de precio para el modelo Cayenne del año 2015. Al menos por ahora, el V-6 de aspiración natural ya no existe como modelo de base, dejando al Cayenne Diésel como la manera menos costosa de conseguir uno de los Porsche que mejor se vende. En común con los Cayennes de 2015, el Cayenne Diésel recibe un clip delantero remodelado con aletas airblade que canalizan el aire hacia los termocambiadores Además, Porsche ha actualizado las luces traseras de LED, afirmando que el entorno de la matrícula, el manejo de la puerta trasera levadiza y las luces traseras quedan

mejor integrados en la tapa de la puerta trasera levadiza. Aunque se aprecian estos detalles mejor en persona. Los dueños de un Cayenne muy conscientes del tema del estatus tal vez se sientan más contentos al saber que, en común con el BMW X5, el Porsche ahora incorpora salidas de los tubos de escape integradas en la defensa trasera.

En su interior, se encuentra un volante deportivo multifunción con levas. Ahora la ventilación por el asiento trasero se ofrece como alternativa.

Resulta interesante ver que no hay mención alguna, hasta la fecha, de un Cayenne más largo que podría competir directamente con el Range Rover y otros SUV de superlujo.

Ya sin un motor de V-8, el Cayenne S de 2015 viene equipado con un motor de ocho velocidades, automático, y un V-6 de 3,6 litros de turbo doble, ambos ofreciendo una buena alternativa al V-8 saliente. Las auténticas ventajas se

encontrarán en el alcance de conducción global y, naturalmente, en el ahorro de combustible enormemente mejorado.

En lo que a velocidad se refiera (a fin de cuentas, es un Porsche), el fabricante calcula que va de 0 a 62 millas por hora en 7,2 segundos. Al modelo del año 2013 se le atribuía 60 millas por hora en 6,9 segundos. En base a la comparación, se situó en segundo lugar detrás del Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel, pero por delante del Mercedes-Benz ML350 Bluetec y el Volkswagen Touareg TDI. Arriba del todo en los modelos del Cayenne de 2015 es el Turbo. Porsche afirma que el Cayenne Turbo 2015 va de 0 a 62 millas por hora en 4,2 segundos mas una velocidad máxima de 173 millas por hora.

The Classic Gambas al Pil Pil Gambas al pil pil Words: Marianne Elizabeth

ambas al pil-pil es una receta española clásica de gambas picantes con aceite y ajo, servido muy caliente, con pan crujiente y un vaso de vino.

Este plato rápido y fácil es una gran introducción a la cocina española.

Aprovechando de tres de los ingredientes fundamentales de la cocina española – marisco de concha, aceite de oliva y ajo, el plato milenario andaluz de gambas refleja el traqueteo de las gambas al ser servidas en la mesa. Acompañado de un vaso refrigerado de vino blanco y pan crujiente para mojar la deliciosa salsa de ajada picante, este plato evoca recuerdos de mesas a la sombra en alguna plaza andaluza somnolienta, o quizás alguna terraza bordeada de palmeras con vistas al Mediterráneo.

Aquí es lo que hace falta por persona: 1012 gambas grandes peladas (sin cocer) por persona, a modo de entrante, o 15-17 para un primer plato principal ligero, 2-3 cucharadas de aceite de oliva, unos pocos tallos de perejil de hoja plana, 2 dientes de 46 OCIO magazine

Here Marianne shares with us a recipe for the classic Gambas Pil Pil. ajo gordos, 1 guindilla seco y picante, pan crujiente fresco, 2 cucharaditas de pimentón picante, y ajustar a gusto. Como alternativa, si la encuentra, se puede añadir pil-pil especial que se vende en la mayoría de los mercadillos en España, en el puesto de especias. La mayoría de las recetas omiten este ingrediente, pero sin ello, el plato carece del color clásico y la profundidad de sabor.

Método: calentar el horno hasta 220ºC. Pelar, limpiar y devanar las gambas. Lavarlas en agua fría y secar totalmente. Picar a trocitos el perejil, apartando una parte para la guarnición. Picar la guindilla seca, quitando las semillas si prefiere un sabor menos picante. Cuando el horno alcanza la temperatura adecuada, verter el aceite de oliva en una pequeña fuente para horno

(una por persona), e introducir en el horno durante 3-4 minutos o hasta que el aceite empiece a hervir. Retirar el plato o platos del horno, remover en el pimentón en polvo, pimientos, ajo y la mayor parte del perejil.

Añadir las gambas, asegurándose de que estén bien cubiertas con la mezcla.

Volver a introducir en el horno durante 4-5 minutos, hasta que el aceite esté burbujeando vigorosamente y las gambas se hayan vuelto de color rosado. No las sobrecocine ya que así se volverán gomosas. Guarnecer con el perejil restante y servir al momento, todavía en las fuentes de horno, mientras que el aceite esté burbujeando. Servir con un vino blanco bien frío y pan crujiente fresco para mojar el aceite picante. ¡Qué aproveche! n

ambas al pil-pil is a classic Spanish recipe for spicy prawns in oil and garlic, best served sizzling hot with crusty bread and a glass of wine.

This quick and easy dish is a great introduction to Spanish cooking. Using three of the fundamental ingredients of Spanish food – shellfish, olive oil and garlic. The timehonoured Andalucían prawn dish reflects the spluttering sound of the sizzling prawns as they come to the table. Served with a chilled glass of white wine, and some crusty bread to mop up the delicious spicy garlic sauce, this dish evokes memories of shaded tables in a sleepy Andalucían plaza, or a palm-fringed terrace overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Here´s what you need for each person: 10-12 large peeled prawns (uncooked) per person

for a starter, or 15-17 for a light main course, 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil, a few stems of flat-leaf parsley (perejil), 2 plump cloves of garlic, 2 teaspoons of paprika spice, adjust according to taste. Alternatively, if you can find it, use specially prepared pil-pil spice, sold at most Spanish street-markets on the spice stall. Most recipes omit this ingredient, but without it the dish lacks the classic colour and depth of flavour. 1 small dried hot chilli pepper, fresh, crusty bread.

Method: Heat the oven to 220 degrees C. Peel, clean and de-vein the prawns. Wash them in cold water and dry thoroughly.

Chop the garlic into small slices. Finely chop the parsley reserving some for the garnish.

Chop the dried chilli pepper, discarding the seeds if you prefer a less fiery flavour.

When the oven comes to temperature put the olive oil into a small ovenproof dish (use one per person), and put in the oven for 3-4 minutes or until the oil starts to bubble.

Remove the dish or dishes from the oven, stir in the paprika powder, chilli peppers, garlic and most of the parsley. Add the prawns, ensuring they are well coated with the mix.

Return to the oven for 4-5 minutes, until the oil is bubbling vigorously and the prawns have just turned pink. Don´t overcook them as they will become rubbery. Garnish with remaining parsley, and serve immediately, still in the ovenproof dishes, while the oil is still bubbling. Serve with a well-chilled white wine and fresh crusty white bread to mop up the spicy oil.

Coffee Culture

odern coffee houses are quite a contrast to what Spanish coffee houses used to be like in the late 19th century. Back then, coffee houses were the places where intellectuals, artists, poets, writers and philosophers alike, gathered. The surroundings bristled with good taste and luxurious fixtures.

Then, as it still is now, cafés were places to see and be seen, although the atmosphere was more restrained, less casual and more akin to that of a fine dining restaurant.

Customers were served by elegant waiters dressed in black tie.

Now though, even if a person visited a café alone, it would be impossible to feel lonely.

Spanish cafés are boisterous, proving to be a lively backdrop to any conversation, providing a near constant stream of hissing banging and grinding as each cup of freshly ground coffee is prepared.

One of the most popular drinks at breakfast, or at any other hour in Spain is café con leche. The beverage is served by simultaneously pouring hot, dark coffee and steaming hot milk into a cup. The 52 OCIO magazine

Because coffee and conversation go hand in hand it is not surprising that coffee bars are the social centres of most villages, towns and cities throughout Spain preparation of the drink can be a source of anxiety for the uninitiated, seeing as how both liquids are carried to the table in giant pots balanced on the same tray. Where the weather is colder, locals prefer a carajillo to get their day started. Self-proclaimed pundits hold that coffee is second only to drinks that contain alcohol as the most popular beverage in the country.

Coffee is also a mainstay during the mid morning/early afternoon break known as merienda, where café solo is a firm favourite for many. Generally, each meal is accompanied or ended with coffee, and of course, it’s needed to get started again after that 2 hour siesta. It’s also an apt way to end a day, especially after a particularly long and gruelling tapas bar crawl. At the end of a long day, a carajillo

comes in handy to revive the spirits. Hardly anyone gets their coffee “to go”; having a coffee is an end in itself. The emphasis is on creating close social bonds, and a café is often the social hub of any given neighbourhood.

In Spain, a cafe isn’t just a convenient rest stop where one orders a coffee and pastry for the simple purpose of refuelling. It’s also a place to watch passers-by, read a newspaper, think, or even make a phone call. Given that many of the cafés also serve decent food, although menu choices may be limited, it is incredibly easy to while away a few leisurely hours just dawdling over coffee like the locals do. Why else would pastries accompany the coffee if not to give a person a reason to linger a little while longer? n

as cafeterías modernas son completamente distintas de como eran las cafeterías a finales del siglo 19. En aquella época, las cafeterías eran los sitios donde se reunían intelectuales, artistas, poetas, escritores y filósofos.

Los alrededores están repletos de buen gusto y enseres lujosos. Entonces, tal y como sigue siendo ahora, las cafeterías eran sitios para ver y dejarse ver, aunque el ambiente era mas moderado, menos informal y mas semejante a lo que es un restaurante de lujo. Los clientes eran servidos por camareros elegantes vestidos de etiqueta.

Aunque ahora, incluso si una persona visita una cafetería sola seria imposible sentirse sola. Las cafeterías españolas son bulliciosas, que acaban siendo un animado telón de fondo para cualquier conversación, proporcionando un constante flujo de siseos y golpes a medida que sacan los granos de café de la maquina de café para deshacerse de ellos después de elaborar cada taza.

Una de las bebidas más populares en el desayuno o a cualquier hora en España es el café con leche. La bebida se sirve

vertiendo el café negro caliente al mismo tiempo que la leche caliente en la taza. La preparación de la bebida puede ser una fuente de ansiedad para los primerizos, viendo como los dos líquidos son llevados a la mesa en cacharros enormes en la misma bandeja equilibrada. Donde el tiempo es mas frío, los del barrio prefieren un carajillo para empezar el día. Los autoproclamados entendidos mantienen que el café es solo secundario a bebidas que contienen alcohol como la bebida más popular del país.

El café es también el pilar principal durante el descanso de media mañana y tarde conocido como la merienda donde el café solo es un gran favorito para muchos. Generalmente, cada comida es acompañada o acabada con un café y por supuesto se necesita otra vez para arrancar después de una siesta de 2 horas. También es una manera acertada para acabar el día, especialmente después de una larga y agotadora rondas de tapas.

Al final de un día largo, un carajillo viene bien para subir el ánimo. Casi nadie pide el café “para llevar”; tomar un café es sentarse a tomar un café. El énfasis es

en crear un círculo social íntimo y una cafetería es muchas veces el centro social de cualquier barrio.

En España una cafetería no es solamente un lugar de descanso oportuno donde uno pide un café y un bollo por el simple motivo de reponer fuerzas. Es también un sitio donde ver pasar a gente, leer el periódico, pensar o hasta incluso llamar por teléfono. Dado que muchas de las cafeterías también sirven comida decente, aunque el menú pueda ser limitado, es muy fácil pasar un buen rato sin prisa simplemente entreteniéndose con el café como lo hacen los locales. ¿Sino porque será que los bollos acompañan al café si no es para dar a una persona un motivo para entretenerse un poquito más? n OCIO magazine

l Restaurante Sierrezuela es el nuevo y emocionante restaurante, bar, cafetería y salón de eventos en Almayate. A poco trayecto hacia Almayate desde la carretera de la costa, podrá ver el impresionante edificio en el lado izquierdo, con bastante aparcamiento afuera. Al pasear por las grandes terrazas al aire libre y entrar en la zona del estiloso bar- restaurante inmediatamente sabrá que ha llegado a un lugar especial.
