Cosy up your home for Autumn A

utumn is the season of colour, of dramatic changes to our surroundings as the mornings turn chilly, leaves fade to brown and we all retreat to the comfort of our homes after living the outdoor lifestyle during the hot summer months. There is something quite comforting about hunkering down for the new season, lighting your first fire, making your first proper hot chocolate (whipped cream atop mandatory!) and creating the perfect retreat from the harshening weather. Autumn is the time to take down the summer curtains and replace them with heavier ones, for bringing out the throws,

Autumn is the time to take down the summer curtains and replace them with heavier drapes, for bringing out the throws, and cosy cushions to help create that wonderful warm feeling.

Elegant throws over the sofa are not only decorative but also lovely to snuggle under when the evening temperature drops. Sitting in front of a crackling log fire (perhaps with a glass of wine) is a wonderful way to spend a few evening hours as you chat with family and friends. Central heating has in the past been seen an expensive luxury here in Spain but today’s modern systems are inexpensive to install and offer very cost effective solutions in keeping your home warm and cosy throughout the cooler months. And finally, no cosy autumn home is complete without candlelight, so fill your home with them. How you go about using candles to make your home cosy, can be done in a myriad of ways. Having Erosion Problems? We have a GREEN SOLUTION! “We are suppliers of a unique grass called Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides). This grass is used in fighting erosion. The grass has an incredible root system. The plant grows to about 1.5 metres in height and the roots grow to 3-4 metres in depth, building an underground wall. It needs no special soil, fertilizer or care, only water until established. There is nothing labour intensive. Once established, Vetiver Grass can tolerate a great deal of water or no water at all”. W

hen the hours of sunlight begin to reduce as Autumn arrives, we need to take more care of our plants and garden than we did during the sunny days of summer. Autumn is without doubt the best time to plant shrubs, fruit trees, roses, and conifers along with your choice of Autumn bulbs, which will flourish at the end of the winter. Autmn is also a good time to transfer potted plants and shrubs to larger pots or into the ground as you prefer. Before planting in the Autumn we must first clear the area of weeds, stones and prepare the soil so that it is loose and will drain well. You will find in this area that there is much clay in the ground. So when preparing the soil for planting you must dig deep to mix the clay soil with the earth and the compost that you will add. Careing for your plants means caring for the soil. A lot will depend on the temperature, rainfall and general humidity. It is best to monitor the dampness of the soil a few centimetres below the surface and water accordingly. If the temperature drops below what is normal you must protect the young or newly planted trees, shrubs and plants with straw, bark mulch, leaves, pine, etc, to create a microclimate on the ground that will protect the roots of these plants.. The summer bulbs must now be removed from the ground before they rot, but do not dispose of them. Allow them to dry naturally and once dry and free of earth, store them wrapped in paper and keep them in darkness. You will find that shrubs and trees will still be active so it is advisable to fertilize them a little so that they build up reserves for the winter. By all means remove and dry or damaged branches from trees and shrubs but save the main pruning for the winter months. With regards to the plants that flower over 16 OCIO magazine

Taking care of your Autumn garden

and over again for many years, these should be cut back to just a few centimetres above the ground. They will return next Spring even stronger than they were. The perennials that would have grown almost out of control over the summer will now start to look a little worse for wear. Start by removing the oldest and driest leaves, then remove the plant from the soil and divide it into several smaller plants and replant them immediately into several smaller pots or into the ground, remembering of course to prepare the soil beforehand. Inside your home, your plants will need less water, but they still love the sunlight. Remember of course that inside the house too we will have less hours of daylight so move your indoor plants closer to the windows to maximise the natural light that is available. If you have central heating or a fireplace the plants will dry out more quickly so make sure they are well irrigated. Try putting the plant onto a dish with gravel or stones and always make sure the dish has water. n

C

Colours of Autumn I

f you’ve been shopping of late to seek out some hardcore air-conditioning action as part of your heat-avoidance program, you may have been surprised to see your favourite stores trying to convince you that it’s nearly winter. It doesn’t seem to matter how much we’re sweating and how little clothing we’re wearing right now because it’s so hot and sticky, in fashion land, the summer kaftans have been packed away and it’s full steam ahead into the season of boots and knits. You see, as jealous as others might be of our summer like autumns and mild winters, it does cause a few fashion issues as the seasons change. Jumping

El color del otoño Words: Hazel Whitehart into cosy autumn and winter fashion trends can be complicated when you are still enjoying temperatures of 20 plus degrees. After all, wool and shearling aren’t exactly essential items of clothing on the Costa del Sol. And while one might dabble in some cashmere sweaters here and there, most autumn and winter fashion trends seem to beg for a snowflake or two. Now in a previous life, I would simply shake my head, abort my shopping

Verás, sin importar lo celosos que estén otros de nuestros inviernos moderados y otoños que parecen veranos, surgen algunos problemas de moda conforme u las estaciones cambian. mission and come back when it was cold enough to wear the items in the stores. The enlightened me knows that if I wait to go shopping for winter clothes when it’s actually winter, there will be nothing in store. It will either all be on clearance (and therefore limited in sizing and choice) or the stores will only have highwinter stock available. I have discovered that I get the most seasonal longevity out of the clothes that are available in the early autumn months. So although the stores seem to be saturated with luxe fabrics and thick 26 OCIO magazine

textures, it just takes a bit of extra searching to find the autumn trends that work for our warm climate. Look for sleeveless sweaters, suede skirts, and sleeveless coats (you certainly won’t have to layer them up like your friends in the UK. These are pieces that reflect the trends of the new season (and that’s always fun to change up to after a long summer) but the fabrics are lighter in weight so you’re more likely to wear them for longer. Many pieces also lend themselves to being worn now and layered up for later. Following are a few popular trends that

are not only among my favorites of the season, but they’re also totally wearable in areas for which the word cold is, well, debatable. A Sleeveless Coat: Sleeveless coats are a great opportunity to indulge in autumn fashion but without heating up like a furnace. Though women in colder climates may layer them over or under other outerwear, the style is just as chic when casually thrown over a sleeveless dress or T-shirt. A Suede Skirt: With a heavy material, like suede, it’s best to steer clear of pieces, like coats and jackets. Skirts (mini or u

midi!) are a great way to rock the autumn trends, especially when paired with a simple blouse. Colours: Whether it’s burgundy, hunter green, or another rich autumn hue, colour is the easiest way to feel on trend, no matter what the weather is like. Dress as you feel in anything from shorts to a winter coat in your favourite autumn tone. Fringe Accessories: 1970s fringe is one of the biggest trends this autumn and accessories are a great way to embrace the style. From totes to clutches, seek a bag with a bit of extra flair this season. A Sleeveless Turtleneck: If you’re craving a chunky knit, like a turtleneck, go 28 OCIO magazine

sleeveless. Layer it over a thin cotton T-shirt or wear it on its own. What’s more, you can style it with everything from casual denim to a business like pencil skirt. Ankle Boots: Boots are an autumn staple, but grab a pair of the ankle variety which are so much better suited for our warmer climate. Wear them with tights or go bare legged and continue to show off the tan you spent all summer working on. n

Whether it’s burgundy, hunter green, or another rich autumn hue, colour is the easiest way to feel on trend, no matter what the weather is like. Dress as you feel in anything from shorts to a winter coat in your favourite autumn tone.

Health Check When did you last have one? Words: Maxine Delfonte

e ensure our car has a regular service and itv/ mot to make sure it is in good order to do to the job required of it and as a matter of course we visit the dentist every six months whether we have any dental problems or not. But when it comes to our bodies in general we are not so well organised. It is time for all women (and men for that matter) to recognise the importance of an annual check up for a healthy body, soul and mind. We should recognise that a wellness check-up leads to better health and helps to prevent disease. Even insurance companies have finally recognised that preventive medicine leads to reduced long term medical cost and regular check ups are considered to be preventive. A well woman check up will involve different tests depending on what your doctor recommends. All women over the 32 OCIO magazine

age of 18 should get a yearly checkup. On the internet there are many sites offering all sorts of information about what should be tested and screened and when and why complete with detailed information and guidelines. But basically, the main areas of concern that should be regularly checked are as follows (in no particular order). Full checkup, including weight and height, thyroid (TSH) test, blood pressure test, blood glucose test, mammogram, smear test and irregular mole check. Before visiting your doctor or practitioner, you should prepare a list of questions. The list should include any concerns you might have. Make sure to bring to the doctors attention any concerns you may have regarding what has been occurring over the past year or so. Remember we are talking about your health and well being

here so do not think for a moment that any question is silly or embarrassing. The doctor needs to know all of your concerns to properly diagnose any problems you might have. I speak from experience. Rest assured, no matter what your troubles are, your doctor has heard it all before. I assure you nothing will surprise them. It is also important to remember to call your doctor earlier than the yearly checkup if things just seem out of sort. Don’t try self diagnosis and please do not try and find a diagnosis and remedy on the internet, you will end up doing more harm than good. For any problems at all get a professional opinion and get it early. Taking stock of your health is the best long term investment you can make. If you are experiencing any aches, pains or discomfort of any kind do not delay, seek professional advice and help. n

Ferrari California T

W

hen the first Ferrari California of the new generation appeared, it rattled Ferrari purists for being too soft, too flabby, too underpowered and not pretty enough. A series of upgrades have addressed all those issues, culminating in the restyled, turbocharged California T model we’re offered today. The result is a genuine driver’s car with terrific performance, fine handling characteristics and a dash of everyday usability you might not typically associate with the prancing horse brand. The Ferrari California T takes on cars such as the Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet, the Aston Martin Vanquish Volante and the Bentley Continental GTC V8. It was launched as simply the Ferrari California (without the T) in 2008. The model became the California T when it was restyled in 2014, adding twin turbocharging along with a downsized 3.9-litre V8 engine and several 36 OCIO magazine

other upgrades and changes to what would be considered the standard Ferrari build, but Ferrari fans were not too impressed. The first problem was the lack of a 12-cylinder powerplant, which was a core feature of the earlier generation California models. The metal folding top didn’t appeal to Ferrari purists either, and as for the later arrival of that turbo engine… traditionalists were spluttering in their sparkly prosecco. But the California was never a car meant for Ferrari purists. It was a product designed to take advantage of the booming luxury goods market, and it’s gone down a storm with drivers for whom the brand means

little more than exclusivity and aspiration – most of whom have never owned a Ferrari before. In spite of the scepticism amongst the purists, This is still a true Ferrari and it’s drive will not leave you in the least bit disappointed. In comfort mode the engine is muted and the suspension supple but, turn the wheelmounted Manettino switch to Sport, and the exhaust barks into life, the gear changes sharpen up and the whole car feels more alert and ready for action. Make no mistake, modern Ferraris are beautifully made and are a far cry from the temperamental older models. That said, don’t expect to find many driver assistance type aids on the Ferrari’s options list, so look elsewhere if you want blind spot alerts, lane-keeping assistance or radar-operated cruise control. The California T might be the most usable Ferrari ever created, but it is supposed to be a driver’s car, after all. n

C

A pesar

Autumn... Did you know? A

utumn is on it’s way. There’s a slight nip in the air, the cars are wet in the morning and the leaves are slowly starting to change from green to yellows and reds. To celebrate the changing of the season, here are a few facts about Autumn that you might not have known. The planet: On the first day of autumn, the sun is aligned with the centre between the North and the South of the planet. On that day, the light and dark hours are exactly the same length. That’s why it is called ‘equinox’, derived from the Latin word ‘aequus’ which means ‘equal’. Standing eggs: There are only two days of the year when you can stand an egg on its end, the autumn and spring equinox. To do this you will need an egg. (It does not have to be hard-boiled.) Place the egg on a hard, flat surface on its largest end. Carefully pull your hands away and it should remain upright. What happens to plants? Plants use sunlight to create nutrients and feed themselves, keeping their green colour. As the days become shorter and plants get less sunshine, they stop producing those nutrients and display a different colour. Yellow and oranges sit below the green all the time and red and brown are made from waste and nutrients trapped in them. 40 OCIO magazine

Otoño... ¿Sabías que? Words: Antony Morecombe

Autumn fun for animals: Squirrels collect and bury nuts all autumn! They rely on storing nuts to be able to eat during winter. The nuts they bury but don’t retrieve sprout into new trees. Birds migrate all year long, but autumn is definitely migration peak season for them, depending on the species, their migration distance and their travel speed. n

E

Douro Valley - Portugal

Wine Destinations of Europe Europe offers some of the most fantastic wine and wine regions in the world, and all within a short distance from where you are right now.

W

ine is a product like no other, it tells the whole story of a region, its climate, the lives of its inhabitants, their taste and their ingenuity. Each wine is different and Europe offers some of the best wines and wine regions in the world. Previously we have visited Alentejo in Portugal, Tuscany in Italy, Catalonia in Spain and Santorini in Greece. This month I want to take you to the Douro Valley in Portugal. The Douro Valley could as easily be called the enchanted valley, such is the beauty and magic that its landscapes offer. Departing from Porto, where the river flows into the sea and where the Douro wines (table wines and Port wine), produced on its hillsides, also end up, there are various ways to get to know this cultural landscape, listed as a World Heritage Site. By road is very 44 OCIO magazine

popular but by train, on a cruise boat and even by helicopter are all possible. None will leave you indifferent. Following a route between the viewpoints that offer the best views, you need to cross the river from north to south and back again. But along the way you can admire breathtaking landscapes over the river and visit various vineyards, towns and villages until you reach Miranda do Douro, the point at which the river enters Portugal. Start at Vila Nova de Gaia with a visit to the lodges where Port wine is aged. Here

you will get to know this wine a little better, taking the opportunity – how could you do otherwise? - to taste the precious nectar. And you can still see the old rabelo boats on the river, the vessels that carried the wine from the quintas where it is produced to the mouth of the river. There has been evidence of wine production in this region for more than two thousand years, but it was only in 1756 that the Demarcated Douro Region was created and wine production in the region was organised and became internationally recognised. It is a land where traditions and modernity go hand-in-hand. This combination is still evident today in the traditional harvest that is still done by hand and the squashing of the grapes by foot, along with the most modern vinification processes that accompany these traditions. n

E

Garlicky Chicken in Red Pepper Sauce T

his is a wonderful autumnal dish to be enjoyed as a lunch or evening meal. The main flavours of roasted red peppers, thyme, garlic and sherry vinegar are without doubt quintessentially Spanish and, the fact that it is prepared and cooked in a single pan makes it even more popular in my kitchen.

Ingredients (for 4 persons): 2 tablespoons of olive oil 8 bone-in skin-on chicken thighs, trimmed of excess fat and skin Salt and freshly ground black pepper 6 cloves garlic, smashed 2 teaspoons of fresh thyme leaves 1 cup of lower-salt chicken broth 3 red peppers, cut into strips 50 OCIO magazine

Pollo al ajillo en salsa de pimientos rojos Words: Alison Wells 1 medium potato, peeled and cut into cubes 1 tablespoon of sherry vinegar Crusty baguette for serving

Preparation: Position a rack in the centre of the oven and heat the oven to 220°C. Heat the oil in a large, oven-proof sauté pan over mediumhigh heat until it’s shimmering. Sprinkle the chicken with 1-1/2 tsp. salt and 1/2 tsp. pepper. Add half the thighs to the pan, skin

side down. Reduce the heat to medium, and cook without touching until the skin browns and easily releases from the pan, about 3 minutes. Turn and cook for 1 minute. Transfer to a large plate. Add the remaining chicken and cook it in the same manner. Transfer the chicken to the plate. Add the garlic and thyme to the pan and cook until the garlic is lightly browned, 2 to 3 minutes. Add chicken broth, red peppers, potato, and sherry vinegar to the pan, and bring to a boil. Remove from the heat, return the chicken to the pan skin side up, and transfer to the oven. Braise the chicken, uncovered, until the potato pieces are tender and the chicken is completely cooked through, about 30 minutes. Serve with the baguette for soaking up the broth. n

E

The Good Food Guide 2017 E

ach year in the UK, the retail giant Waitrose release their Good Food Guide. The newly released 2017 guide has raised a few eyebrows amongst food-loving folk, not least for naming the three best restaurants in the UK as L’Enclume, in Cumbria; Restaurant Nathan Outlaw, in Cornwall; and Restaurant Sat Bains, in Nottingham. Much was made of the fact that not one of this trio is in London, otherwise known as the Culinary Capital of the World... apparently! The Good Food Guide has a long and honourable tradition of 65 years, and counting, championing the best places to eat in Britain. A “long-list” of potential entries is based on readers’ reports, then

“La Guía De La Buena Comida” Words: Malcolm Jarvis

a team of inspectors whittles it down to the final selection. (Although, as Chef Rick Stein once asked me, “when you and your partner have had a really good meal in a restaurant, do you go upstairs to your room and - well, you know - or do you sit down and write a letter to the Good Food Guide?”) The Good Food Guide has often promoted non London restaurants and, now that chefs are standing up for homegrown local produce, rather than relying on

the supply chain from Paris’s Rungis Market via London, countryside restaurants now have an advantage over their metropolitan rivals. Urban chefs, meanwhile, are desperately keen to get hold of the same produce that their country cousins have; nevertheless, London has only 16 spots in the Good Food Guide’s top 50. Edinburgh has three, and no other city has more than one. It is a list peppered with a few newcomers, but is heavily laden with Michelin-starred “fine dining” restaurants. Indeed the top 10 restaurants boast 19 Michelin stars between them. To compile the top 50 best restaurants in Britain, The Good Food Guide combines reader feedback, mystery inspections and editor appraisal. To get a perfect score of 10, the restaurant has to demonstrate “just perfect dishes, showing faultless technique at every

service.” So what has happened to Lonfon? The happy truth, I think, is not that London’s restaurants have got worse, but that restaurants outside London are a darn sight better than they were. A generation ago, the idea of frittering away hard-earned money on eating out was regarded by many as frivolous, except for special birthdays and anniversaries. Now, cities like Bristol, Belfast, Liverpool and Newcastle are hotbeds of culinary creativity, their kitchens spurred on by a young clientele who appreciate great food, reasonable prices and a lack of formality. As the saying goes; You pays your money - often quite a lot of it, especially in London - and you takes your choice. Just as we choose which film to go and see, or which holiday to book, we all have our prejudices and preferences (personally, I dislike queuing, loud music, lighting so low I can’t read the wine list, and 17-course tasting menus, but that’s just me. I think I must be getting old.) Find a guide or a critic with whom you regularly agree (or, for that matter, consistently disagree) and you have a useful tool when making a choice. I would counsel against relying too heavily on TripAdvisor though, some of whose ratings are frankly barmy. What, for example, is London’s best restaurant? The Ledbury? Le Gavroche? Gordon Ramsay at Royal Hospital Road? No, according to the selfstyled “largest travel site in the world”, that honour goes to Andy’s Greek Taverna, in Camden. I’ve been to Andy’s, and they serve a mean moussaka, but it would not 60 OCIO magazine

be top of my list by a long shot. But having said that, I confess to having a problem with lists. Even after a lifetime of eating out around Britain, I’m not sure I have a list. In my opinion, lists are like a plate of fish and chips... best taken with a large pinch of salt! *Malcolm Jarvis is a food writer and former chef who has dined at several thousand restaurants in 55 countries over the last 20 years. He never misses lunch! n
