Art &Style

rt, furniture and collectables can be great investments if you buy the right pieces. Many of us are interested in the idea of collecting art, antiques or tomorrows antiques as both a source of joy in our homes and also with the hope that one day they will be worth more than we paid for them. This of course is the basic principle of investment. As I am sure you are aware, all forms of venture have their risks but art and antiques might be considered more unpredictable than most as their value is dictated by other people’s tastes. Let us consider art as an investment and how we go about maximising a return. There is no magic formula to value a piece of u

As an investor it is a good idea to get in on this process as early as possible, but to bear in mind that each step reduces the risk and therefore the profit potential. The more well-known the artist becomes, the higher the price his work will command. Art is a question of taste, and taste is unpredictable, illogical and is extremely personal. It is therefore very difficult to invest in something that you think people might like in the future. Much wiser, to invest in something you like right now. You will then have the benefit of enjoying your art hanging on your own walls, while waiting to cash in on your investment at a later date. Before you do this, however, you need to understand your own tastes and what you really do like. It is a good idea to visit galleries and talk to the gallery owners. Do have a budget in mind and don’t be afraid to take advice from the gallery owners, for although they will be keen to make a sale, they will have all the background details of the artist at their fingertips, and will be able to advise 12 OCIO magazine

Bear in mind the gallery owners want you to come back again and again, especially if you are a serious investor so they will be more than happy to answer your questions and help you make decisions. From your perspective as a buyer, it is important for you to find a gallery where you feel comfortable so you can visit a number of times to be sure of what you like. Whether you are looking to spend a small fortune or just a few euros, one good tip is to always buy the best you can afford. If you feel brave enough and are sure of your own taste, then in addition to the galleries there are numerous art fairs both here and throughout Europe for you to seek out your potentital investment.

The grass has an incredible root system. The plant grows to about 1.5 metres in height and the roots grow to 3-4 metres in depth, building an underground wall. Leña de Oliva W

ith the colder months fast approaching, it is almost time to light up your fireplace and enjoy a little winter warmth. Nothing beats the magical feeling of being cocooned in front of the fire place and to let the warmth from the logs seep in through your skin. And, it’s sheer bliss if the warmth is generated by natural logs that also make the air around it wonderful with a pleasant smell and feel. Instead of burning any logs that are available, olive wood logs provide that wonderful feeling when used in a fireplace. Quite obviously, olive wood logs come from the Olive tree. In Spain and Portugal the trees felled for the purpose of creating logs for our fires, are usually over 500 years old. These trees are felled because they no longer produce good quality Olives. The felling of thees trees makes space for new trees to be planted, sometimes up to 5 new trees being planted for each old one felled because 16 OCIO magazine

Olive tree logs Words: Angela Stevens

of the dense trunks and root system they have after so many years growing. For what seems like forever, parts of the olive tree have been used by Mediterranean civilisations for many aspects of life and was always said to be therapeutic and pleasant. Probably the other reason being that olive trees were grown in such abundance. But either way, the Olive tree has always been put to the very best use and not least of all in the creation of logs for our summer barbecues and winter fires. Olive wood is very dense which makes it burn very well. It burns for much longer than most other woods, making it more economical as you need to use less. Also, it does not have a high sap content like

other wood, making it ideal for our home fires and barbecues. The good thing about olive logs is that they do not endanger the environment. At home they also keep the environment from being polluted even though one may resort to using the fireplace almost on a daily basis throughout the winter months. As a final thought, when your wood is delivered, do be prepared to store it correctly. Naturally you will want to keep it dry but beyond that, think about storing the logs on a wood pallet perhaps to get it off the ground. Wood left on the ground in a disorganised pile won’t allow enough air-flow to keep the wood sufficiently dry from the damp and wet air of the winter months. To properly dry your wood, or what’s called “seasoning’, the wood ideally needs a place where the sun can warm it and the wind can blow through it. This will properly season your wood giving you a longer burn time and lots more winter warmth. n

Accessory or Necessity?

T

oday the handbag has an almost iconic status in the world of fashion. A practical accessory that no woman can do without, over the last fifty years it has also taken on the role of status symbol, a badge of style reflecting a woman’s self-image and the image she wants to project to the world. The first evidence of a handbag with any role as a fashion accessory came in medieval times, when wealthy women would embellish the simple bag they wore on their belts to carry their necessities, with lavish embroidery and even jewels, to reflect their status. Little was seen of any sort of fashion bag for the next few centuries. Women wore

belt that tied underneath your skirts. A slit in your skirts and petticoats allowed easy access to your pockets, so that whenever you needed your scissors or smelling salts they were right to hand. The contents of a woman’s pockets then were quite similar in use to the contents of her handbag today. The V&A Museum in London documents an assortment of practical sewing tools, handkerchief, notebook, money and beauty aids, scent bottle, keys and even an apple or orange as the contents of one lady’s pockets. Just like the contents of today’s handbag, a woman’s pockets were a private, almost mysterious domain, swathed in secrecy under her skirts. It was at the turn of the nineteenth century 26 OCIO magazine

that the reticule, the forerunner of the modern handbag came into fashion. The wide skirts and hoops of the eighteenth century had given way to slim-line, even skimpy, high-waisted, figure-hugging dresses of filmy muslin. No fashionable lady wanted to ruin the outline of her shapely figure by suspending pockets full of bulky items underneath her petticoats. So the first fashion bag was born. The reticule was a small decorative bag, with a similar function to today’s evening bags. It held a few essentials, maybe a scent-bottle, or a needle and thread to sew up a torn ruffle, some smelling salts to revive a fainting beauty. It was a given thing that you would be accompanied by a gentleman or a servant to carry anything that was too big for your delicate

bag. A lady would have several reticules to go with different outfits and fashion magazines advised on the latest styles and ways they should be carried. The term ‘handbag’ first came in to use at the beginning of the twentieth century and was used for leather bags then carried by men. It was the 1920’s that saw the first emergence of the modern handbag carried by women. This was another period with a fashion for light, skimpier dresses that weren’t suited to pockets. It was also a period of growing independence for women, when women could go out on their own and travel without a man or a servant to carry things for them. The handbag was at once a fashion accessory chosen to match an outfit and a practical symbol of their new u

siguientes siglos.

Handbags continued to rise in importance as fashion accessories and in the 1950’s, designers were giving names to the fore-runners of today’s ‘must have’ bags, some of which are still sought after classics today. Handbag fashion went through a short slump in the early 1960’s when the hip new youth culture rejected handbags as too formal for the new swinging style. Ever versatile, designers soon came up with funky new designs, using modern materials and bright colours and the handbag’s new casual interpretation evolved with the times, regaining its 28 OCIO magazine

special place close to the heart of every woman, young and old. Today, there is a handbag for every role a woman could wish to play and every image she ever dreamed of projecting. Our handbags can be our portable offices, they carry our beauty secrets, they are the trustworthy guardians of our identities, our pills and potions, even emergency rations. They can equip us for a weekend of activity with friends or bulge with the essentials of a young family. vez al inicio del siglo XX y se usó para bolsos de cuero que usaban los hombros.

Detox & Cleanse A

fter a summer of excess it is now the time to take care of ourselves once again and regenerate our bodies from the inside out. A detox or cleanse is a great way to get back the vitality and energy needed to get us through the cold winter months. You have already noticed I am sure that when we feel tired and run down, our skin lacks freshness and shine and our hair appears lifeless and dull, this is often because our bodies natural filtering systems like the liver, kidney and intestine, are overloaded and are not functioning well for us. When the liver is saturated by excesses of food, medication or even stress, your body loses it’s ability to burn fat, which leads to weight gain and higher levels of cholesterol. The Kidneys are responsible for the proper disposal of liquids and when they are not working properly we can see how swollen our hands and feet can become. Even when we get up in the morning we can see the heavy bags under our eyes. Keeping the kidneys in good health is also essential to avoid the risk of high blood pressure and high levels of uric acid, which cause problems in the joints with arthritis and osteoarthritis. The intestine is the organ of our body where all the essential vitamins from the food we 32 OCIO magazine

eat are absorbed. It is very important for the intestine to function properly because it assists in the proper functioning of our entire body. So having explained the problems we face after a period of excess, let’s have a look at what to do about it. The fastest and most popular action is to do a cleanse. For a fast and effective cleanse, medicinal plants are our best allies. For example Milksistle, Artichoke and Dandelion to cleanse the liver; Horsetail for the kidneys and Psyllium (a natural fibre with prebiotic) to help the intestine. Herbal medicines can be taken as a drink infusion by taking three cups a day for a period of 21 days. Alternatively these fantastic plants can be taken in capsule form on a daily basis. Your local herbalist and health food store will be able to guide. And finally, I want to share with you a wonderful broth recipe that is perfect to help with a cleansing period. It can be prepared

quickly at home and should be consumed daily over a 21 day period. Ingredients: 2 litres of water 1 celery stick 2 onions 2 cabbage leaves (large and green) Boil all in 2 litres of water and reserve only the broth. Do not forget that our body is the vehicle that carries us through our entire life, so it deserves to be cared for. n

FIAT 124 SPIDER W

e were very impressed with the Fiat 124 Spider when we tried it for the first time in Italy earlier this year. We particularly liked the Fiat’s flexible turbo engine and compliant ride. Now we’ve driven the car in the UK, though, we’re even more sure that it’s one of Fiat’s best ever sports cars. For a start, the ride quality doesn’t disappear on the lumpy and bumpy roads. In fact, the compliant suspension set-up means that on a fast but badly-surfaced road it feels very composed indeed. It’s a superb cruiser, perfect for a coastal drive or scenic route through mountains where the grippy Bridgestone tyres mean it feels planted in those sweeping corners, too. The steering is short on feel for a sports car, but it is nicely weighted and quick enough to make the 124 Spider feel alive at your fingertips. As it’s rear-wheel drive, you can use the 36 OCIO magazine

Fiat 124 Spider Words: Daniel Hardman

throttle to help bring the car around bends as well, which is great fun. In fact, I would say that this car is slightly more fun when you’re pushing hard. The Fiat’s 1.4-litre turbocharged unit feels powerful most of the time and you can easily leave the Fiat in-gear and enjoy the punchy performance. At any speed you can enjoy the tactile controls, plus the view out over the long bonnet makes it feel special from behind the wheel. Looks are clearly a matter of taste, but it’s worth pointing out that we feel the 124 Spider is more handsome in the metal than it looks in pictures. Inside, the Fiat feels

very well built, with soft-touch materials all around and a leather steering wheel as standard. The leather seats on our top-spec test car look great as well. The convertible roof arrangement is very easy to operate and keeps things reasonably civilised inside once it’s up by suppressing the noise from outside. Nobody expects a roadster to be massively practical and the 140-litre boot isn’t exactly cavernous but it’s good enough for a couple of bags for a short holiday for two. Equipment on the Lusso Plus model includes heated seats, a seven-inch touchscreen sat-nav, a premium sound system with nine speakers, a rear-view camera, LED headlights and 17-inch alloy wheels. Sports car buyers will find the Fiat 124 Spider particularly tempting, offering a quality build with high spec and a very reasonable price tag. n

N

ndalucia is a region rich in flavours and fresh ingredients, where the sea plays an important role in preparing the various dishes that make up the cuisine of the region. There are many recipes that can be produced with seafood and in particular, prawns. Perhaps one of the most popular and delicious, is the pil pil. in a dish of rich hues. When prepared properly, the langostinos pil pil is without doubt an explosion of flavour and a real treat for our palete. Ingredients: (Sharing dish) 20 peeled prawns 3 cloves of garlic 100 ml of extra virgin olive oil 100 ml of good quality white wine 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon parsley 1 chili pepper, (optional) if you want it spicy A pinch of salt Note: There are other ingredients that you can add to enhance the dish. Clams work very well as do eels and baby squid, the later will provide a taste experience like no other.

Step-by-step recipe: 1. In a clay or iron pan add the oil, chopped garlic and chilli (if you want it spicy of course). 2. SautĂŠ the ingredients and add the paprika. 3. Then add the white wine and salt and let it reduce for a few minutes. 4. Now you can add the prawns. 5. Finish by adding the parsley. Tips: As you can see, this is a very easy, economical and delicious dish to create. I encourage you to try it and enjoy the flavour of the sea directly on your table. I recommended this dish is served with some fresh crusty bread on the side to soak up the ever so tasty oil once you have finished with the prawns. n

Puerto Banús Playground of the rich and famous

P

uerto José Banús, more commonly known as Puerto Banús is a luxury marina located in the area of Nueva Andalucía, to the southwest of Marbella, on Spains beautiful Costa del Sol. It was built in May 1970, by José Banús, a local property developer, as a luxury marina and shopping complex. It has since become one of the largest entertainment centres on the Costa del Sol, with over 5 million annual visitors. Developed in traditional Mediterranean architectural style, Puerto Banús boasts various shopping areas, elegant restaurants and lively bars all built around the exclusive marina. Puerto Banús is also famos for it’s international celebrities, endless procession of exotic cars and of course the truly incredible luxury yachts that fill the harbour waters. The story suggests that he was visited in 1966 by Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe to ask him to work on the Hotel Marbella Club. Schreck’s first job was to meet José Banús and convince him that Puerto Banús was not a suitable place to build huge skyscrapers that would house thousands of families. He proposed instead a sophisticated Andalusian village and marina. Prior to the construction of Puerto Banús,

Marbella was already a fashionable and exclusive retreat for the rich and titled old families of Europe, but the meeting of José Banús and Noldi Schreck saw the idea of something very different, a resort not for the wealthy few, but for the wealthy many. It was to be the first marina-style yacht harbour to be built on the Costa del Sol, the original model against which all those that came later – nine marinas between Sotogrande and Marina del Este in Almuñecar – are measured. Some of the newer yacht harbours may be more intimate or more architecturally attractive, but none has been able to match Puerto Banús’ unique atmosphere and trendy aura, thanks to which Puerto Banús has been a household name internationally since the day it opened. The lavish opening of the complex in May 1970 was attended by, amongst others, the Aga Khan, film director Roman u

P

A young Julio Iglesias was hired to sing for the guests for the sum of 125,000 pesetas. Over three hundred waiters from Seville served 22 kilos of beluga caviar to 1700 guests. Ever since, Puerto Banús has been an obligatory stop for visiting celebrities and aristocrats. The port has nine berths for the superyachts of over 150 feet. There is a total capacity for 915 boats of all sizes, which makes this one of the largest yacht harbours in the Mediteranean and also one of the most popular, boasting an average occupancy of 78%. Puerto Banús is not really a sailor’s port, unlike the other harbours along the coast, but rather a place where the rich and famous moor their yachts for safe keeping. 52 OCIO magazine

For landlubbers, the port is a major tourist attraction. According to the port’s own estimates, some 36,000 people visit Puerto Banús daily during the August high season and not all of them are yacht owners or film stars. Most are day trippers that come to see the floating palaces and enjoy the shopping and famous hospitality. For anyone wanting to be a millionaire for the day can easily rent a top of the range sports car and spend a few hours cruising along the port. Alternatively a boat charter for the day is easy enough to do and you can even leave the marina if you wish, although it would seem that most yachts do not bother to do so. Buying a property in the neighbourhood is an interesting proposition for those who want to be in the thick of the action. It is also a limited commodity and comes with serious price tags. But then the lifestyle of the rich and famous always did. n

Spanish Beer T

hough Spain is mostly known as a wine producing and consuming country, beer is also a very important beverage. There are no certainties as to who brought beer to the peninsular although it is generally considered that the formula was inherited from the Greeks or the Phoenicians who traded in the south of the country as well as various areas of the the Mediterrranean. Unlike wine, Spanish beer went rather unnoticed for hundreds of years until emperor Charles V came to Spain from Flandes, bringing with him his court and their strange customs. Charles V was

born in Ghentt in 1500. He would become the most powerful man in the world of his time, but as a condition to access the Spanish crown, he had to comply to learn Spanish and live in Castile. pesar de que España es más conocida como productora y consumidora de vino, la cerveza no deja de ser también una bebida muy importante. Europe and installing a small beer factory in a monastery. The Spanish beer factory was built next to the Manzanares’ river bank, mainly due to the great quality of its water. The factory functioned from 1537, manufacturing beer for the King, who liked to drink it ice cold, much to his doctor’s dismay. It closed in 1558 when the king abdicated and retired to a monastery in Yuste (Cáceres). However the king’s taste for beer was not shared by the people, who disliked the beer as much as they disliked him. However, his son and successor Philip II commanded the re-establishment of beer production in the Manzanares factory. From then onwards a number of large beer factories opened, despite the fact that beer still had no real popularity to speak of. Perhaps it really didn’t have much to do with king Charles V at all, but rather the fact that wine in Spain was very good and very cheap. Other beer factories opened in Madrid in the 1600’s, most named after their owners, who were either Flemish, Alsacian or German, anything but Spanish it would seem. But still, no one in Spain really liked beer. Only during the beginning of the 20th century did it gain enough popularity for large factories to open. During the 1960’s everything changed and beer finally became the preferred summer drink, for three reasons. It had a low alcohol content, it was very refreshing and for the first time in it’s history it was cheaper than wine. Nowadays, the popularity of beer is 60 OCIO magazine

evident and the cost is still very low, often cheaper than most soft drinks! It is not uncommon for people to order a ‘caña’ which is a small glass of beer, often served with a tapa as well. Serving beer in small caña glasses ensures your beverage stays chilled to the bottom of the glass, which is a very practical approach of course. But more importantly I suspect is that a small glass of beer takes less time to drink, allowing you the opportunity to hop from one bar to another in quick succession, meeting friends as you go. Doesn’t sound like a bad way to spend a little leisure time now does it...makes you wonder why beer took so long to catch on. n

The Joy of Cooking Together M

any Moroccan dishes take their name from a tagine, the clay or ceramic vessel in which they were traditionally cooked. Although urban Moroccans may be more more inclined to use modern cookware such as pressure cookers when making stews, tagines are still favoured by those who appreciate the unique, slow-cooked flavour which the clayware imparts to the food. In addition, tagines remain the cookware of choice in many rural areas as a matter of cultural norm and preference. Why not get a group of friends and family together and cook a Tagine meal? All the preparations, you can do together as a group to make the slicing, peeling and choosing of the spices more fun. “Simply assemble your choice of vegetables and meat, mix in the spices, build it up like a beautiful pyramid in the tagine and then place it on hot charcoal, in the oven 64 OCIO magazine

While the tagine cooks, you have plenty of time to enjoy each other’s company, prepare side dishes or simply relax. This is slow cooking at its very best. Now bearing in mind that you won’t be stirring during the cooking, take care how you arrange or layer ingredients for a beautiful table presentation. In Morocco, the whole family will share in the tagine and it is common to eat the tagine with flat bread, which also doubles up as utensils. Britt-Marie Ålund recently attended a Vilostrada Tagine Workshop and said that

the Tagine was a new way of cooking for her and one that she will be repeating back at home with her family. “The workshop, set in a family environment filled with joy, enthusiasm and friendliness, was impossible to resist”, she said. For those of you that are not familiar with the Tagine, there are often two types on offer to buy, glazed and non-glazed. Vilostrada recommend that you use the non-glazed tagines for cooking to avoid any extra chemicals filtering into your food. The glazed Tagine can be used to serve the meal if you wish, although tradition suggests that the meal should be served in the same pot that it is cooked in. Vilostrada organises tagine workshops regularly around the Costa del Sol.
