ECB triggers major euro sell-off whilst Rugby World Cup boosts UK retail sales

I

nvestors were caught by surprise by the dovish tone set by the European Central Bank (ECB) yesterday.

The ECB left monetary policy unchanged, as anticipated, but the press conference that followed the meeting triggered a major euro sell-off, as Mario Draghi clearly stated that the ECB stands ready to increase its quantitative easing programme and is also considering lowering the deposit rate.

Despite acknowledging the resilience of domestic demand in the Eurozone, Mr Draghi expressed, “concerns over growth in emerging markets, and possible repercussions for the economy from developments in financial and commodity markets continue to signal downside risks to the outlook for growth and inflation.”

Mr Draghi just stopped short of committing to ease further in his next December meeting amid speculation that the ECB might even announce a small reduction in its deposit rate and expand its QE

programme. He stated that, “the degree of monetary policy accommodation will need to be re-examined at our December monetary policy meeting.”

The market welcomed the news: the Stoxx 600 rose by 2% and the bond market rallied sharply. The heavy selling of the euro pushed it down by as much as 2% against the US dollar, and the euro continues to suffer in this morning’s trade.

Speaking of the US, yesterday’s US data was mixed. Initial jobless claims rose to 259,000, while the Kansas City Federal Reserve’s manufacturing activity index showed an improvement in October and the Chicago Federal Reserve’s national activity index was just below consensus.

Data out of the US housing sector was bright – existing home sales had a strong rise of 4.7% in September. US manufacturing figures are also scheduled for release this afternoon.

M

uch the same as everyone else who lives in Spain who have relatives and friends abroad, we had our fair share of visitors this summer. One particular friend, Rachel, that visited us from the UK was influenced so much by the culture and atmosphere of glorious Spain, that she now wants to refurbish her UK home on the coast, by giving it a total makeover...Spanish style.

We asked a local interior designer about creating the typical Spanish style for a home outside of Spain. Her advice was really quite simple.

A Spanish style is for you, if you want to make a wonderful, colourful statement

in your home. In fact the whole Mediterranean interior design style is fresh and vibrant but Spain brings to mind beautiful, rustic Spanish villas, relaxed sunny siestas, colourful fiestas and an oldfashioned, solid sense of family.

The Spanish interior design style is a wonderfully warm and friendly style, really easy to live with, and super easy to achieve in your own home. Just follow these few, simple guidelines…

WALLS: To get a really authentic, rustic look, for your Spanish style, start with a textured base for your walls. Try a ‘stucco’ style plaster on your walls, or a textured paint, such as suede effect paint, or u

even a colour wash. For a good colour wash, use a paler base coat, then a darker shade of the same colour for the top coat. Using a cloth or brush, add the (slightly diluted) top coat in random swirls or strokes. It takes a bit of practice to get a look you are happy with – but it will look very effective!

Choose really vibrant, rustic colours, with a Mediterranean feel – reds, yellows, oranges, pinks, blues, greens and browns.

Also use plenty of white, as a nice bright, fresh base, which will freshen and lighten all your colours.

You can also add a bit of colour to your walls with some lovely Spanish patterned tiles. You needn’t stick to kitchens and bathrooms for tiles to create your Spanish interior design look. Use tiles in bedrooms and living rooms as well, to get the look.

You can use just a a simple and effective line of tiles - or go half way up, it really looks lovely.

Choose really vibrant, rustic colours, with a Mediterranean feel...reds, yellows, oranges, pinks, blues, greens and browns and use plenty of white as a nice, bright and fresh base colour.

FURNITURE: Choose good quality, rustic furniture. The look is quite a simple, uncluttered look - so only choose the basics for your furniture needs. Choose dark woods, in a well-loved, distressed or worn finish. For a more elegant and ornate look, choose furniture with wrought iron and decorative features.

ACCESSORIES: Wrought iron is a fantastic material to use for your Spanish style. Choose wrought iron chandeliers, wall lights, wall sconces and candlesticks. u

Also go for really striking, ornate, wrought iron wall art – or decorative, carved, wooden wall panels, as an alternative, whether hung on white or vibrantly coloured walls, it will give you a fantastic, unusual focal point for your room – and a really authentic Mediterranean feel.

Tapestries are also beautiful hung on the wall and help to create a warm, comfortable and family feel – particularly for homes built in colder parts of the world.

Because this is quite a simple and uncluttered style, Spanish interior design is not big on curtains. Windows can be left bare if privacy is not an issue. If you do like to stay a little private, keep your window treatments quite simple.

Choose wooden Venetian blinds, or brightly painted, wooden shutters, for a perfect Spanish style.

Now this may not be your thing but religious paintings and statues, and other religious imagery, are also a good way of getting an authentic look, particularly exquisitely painted statues with plenty of gold, but again, be careful not to over do it, you are after a hint of religion not a theme.

Whichever style or look you go for, a Spanish interior design will bring you a wonderfully bright, vibrant, warm and friendly feel. It is a very striking look, and will be sure to give you a huge emotional uplift, every time you come home. n

Autumn Fashion Show A wonderful array of fashion collections were on display as over 200 guests enjoyed the Autumn/Winter Lukuma Fashion Show on the Paseo de Larios in Torre del Mar. This was certainly a Fashion Show with a difference. As the guests were treated to cava, real life models being friends & clients of Lukuma, showed off the fabulous outfits as they sashayed down the catwalk to the latest hip hop sounds. The evening was a huge success and gave the audience an insight into some of the best looks for the coming season.

Special thanks were given to the model stylists for hair & make-up; AC Peluqueros and Mary Kay cosmetics.

f there is a tree that everyone should plant in their garden it is the Moringa. At least, that is what the researchers around the world claim. Native to India, it is known as the “tree of life”.

The plant has an incredibly high nutritional value. Research has shown that Moringa contains seven times more vitamin C than oranges, four times more vitamin A than carrots, four times more calcium than cow’s milk, three times more iron than spinach and three times more potassium than bananas...and that’s not all. The plant also contains essential amino acids and numerous medicinal properties.

In Ayurvedic medicine it is used to combat cholesterol, hypertension, asthma, coughs, diabetes and diseases of the kidney and liver. It is anti-inflammatory, analgesic and it is a great diuretic. It is also antibacterial, fights against arthritis, hepatitis, protects against cancer and is a powerful antioxidant.

In Andalucía, especially in the area of Malaga, it has been cultivated for some years now with good success, allowing us to enjoy its many health benefits.

It is a tree that grows relatively fast and likes the warm mediterranean climate. Its dried leaves are used to prepare infusions with a delicate flavour. There is quite simply nothing more healthy to start your day.

Quite incredibly, this plant is also capable of purifying water. Many studies in this regard have been carried out by the Pennsylvania State University, where a filter using sand and seeds of Moringa killed bacteria such as E.Coli at 99 %. The secret of the seed is the oil content and special proteins which are capable of trapping clay, silt and bacteria, effectively cleansing the water.

T

he most important thing to remember when considering a style change is to make sure you are being being true to your own appearance by ensuring you choose a style, cut and colour that suits your face and body shape. By following a few simple rules your new style will have heads turning in your direction.

Round face. Cuts that have angles are your best bet. Angular cuts offset the roundness of your face. Chin-length or longer cuts are best, with longer layers in the back. Avoid straightening your hair against the sides of your face – a little height on the top and wave throughout will make your face look slimmer and prettiest.

Heart-shaped face. Since you have more width at the top of your head, it’s best to concentrate on keeping your hair flat on top, with more fullness around the jawline.

Get a chin-length cut that has many layers at the ends or flip the ends out; this will give your hair more width. Or, if you prefer long hair, start long layers at your chin to give hair more body on the lower half. To make 38 OCIO magazine

Style and Go a prominent forehead look smaller, add a long fringe that sweeps across your face to the side, tapering towards the earlobe.

Long, narrow face. If your face is long and thin, steer clear of cuts with height. If you already have super- thick or curly hair, style it so it’s back from your face, and doesn’t cover any of your features.

Body and hair type: Your stature and hair structure can also affect the type of style that looks best on you.

Plus-size. If you feel you show your weight in your face, wear your hair at least shoulder-length with soft layers that are super-feminine. If you’re on the thin side, short haircuts look best because they aren’t overpowering, yet your small bone structure keeps you looking feminine without a traditional feminine haircut. If you prefer long hair, don’t give it too much body, since it can overpower your face and frame.

Curly hair. Since curly hair is so dry, make sure to use a leave-in conditioner, which will add moisture to your hair throughout the day. Try not to touch your hair too

much, even if you’re trying to enhance the curl with a diffuser. If your hair is super curly, you can wear it either very short or past your shoulders. If you’re enhancing natural wave, keep it mid-length to long for the most attractive effect.

Straight hair. Most people don’t have naturally straight hair. Most hair has a bit of wave. Either play up the wave or blowdry hair straight.

Thick hair. Everyone envies thick hair, but if it’s too dense for your face, ask your stylist to use texturising sheers or razors to take off some of the weight and help your hair keep its shape. Avoid short cuts or bobs. Instead, wear hair at least shoulder length with layers.

Fine hair. Fine hair is great because it’s quick to style, but can often lose any body within hours, and look limp and lifeless. Use high-volume styling products and blow-dry your hair at the root, letting it dry naturally at the ends. With curls being so popular, don’t be afraid to try a body perm – it was made for your hair type. n

Cara larga y estrecha. Si tu cara es alargada y delgada, mantente alejada de cortes con

volumen. Si ya tienes el pelo muy grueso o rizado, péinalo de manera que quede tu cara despejada y que no cubra ninguna de tus facciones.

Tipo de cuerpo y pelo: Tu estatura y las características de tu pelo pueden afectar también al tipo de estilo que mejor va contigo.

Tamaño plus. Si crees que tu cara es bastante grande, lleva tu pelo por lo menos hasta el hombro con capas suaves que son muy femeninas. La modelo Mia Tyler le da un toque fantástico al pelo largo.

Delgada. Si tu cara es delgada, un estilo con pelo corto es lo mejor, porque no

domina mucho sobre el rostro, y gracias a tu pequeña cabeza un corte que no es tradicionalmente femenino se verá muy femenino. Si prefieres el pelo largo, no le des mucho volumen y cuerpo, ya que puede quitarle protagonismo a tu cara.

Pelo rizado. Al ser muy seco el pelo rizado, asegúrate de utilizar un acondicionador permanente para que se mantenga hidratado todo el día. Intenta no tocar tu pelo mucho, incluso al marcar el rizo con un difusor. Si tu pelo es muy rizado, puedes llevarlo muy corto o hasta los hombros. Si quieres marcar los rizos naturales, déjalo de media melena a largo para dar un efecto más atractivo.

Pelo liso. La mayoría de la gente no tiene el pelo liso natural. Siempre se suele tener un poco de ondulación. Dale un poco de forma a las ondas o bien péinalo liso con secador.

Pelo grueso. Todo el mundo envidia el pelo grueso, pero si es demasiado grueso para tu cara, pídele a tu estilista que le quite un poco de volumen para así darle forma.

Evita el estilo corto o con media melena, llévalo al menos hasta los hombros con capas.

Pelo fino. El pelo fino es estupendo porque es fácil de peinar, pero puede perder a menudo el volumen después de unas horas, y quedarse caído y sin vida. Utiliza productos que den mucho volumen y sécalo con secador desde la raíz, dejando las puntas secar al aire. Rolls Royce Phantom M

y life as a journalist has taken me on many unusual journeys to both weird and wonderful places.

My recent trip to the USA with Rolls Royce was no exception. We start the story with my pit stop at a petrol station along U.S. Route 101 in California. I was sipping iced tea and taking some shade when a local chap appeared from the back office and started to talk about the heat of the day. As the small talk dried up I saw the man squint as he strained to see the car across the far side of the garage forecourt.

“Is that a Rolls?” he asked, squinting harder at the silver and blue Phantom Drophead Coupe. In the 103-degree heat, the car shimmered like a mirage parked between two farm trucks.

“Yeah, yeah, it is a Rolls,” he continued. “Why is that here?”

“You got me,” I answered, taking a sip of my iced tea.

We chatted for a few more minutes about the shimmering mirage and then exchanged goodbyes. As I walked up to the Rolls Royce, 44 OCIO magazine

I looked back at my five-minute friend and saw him laughing. “I knew it was yours,” he said. “Your shoes are too nice for around here.”

To real Rolls Royce owners, I doubt my pair of hiking boots really cut it for ownership authenticity, but they were clean, looked new, and stood out like an avocado in a bowl of tomatoes. No, I was not a Rolls owner, but I was on my way to Monterey to drive a mile or two in a Rolls Royce owner’s shoes -- or Italian leather loafers, I assume.

No car brand says old money more than Rolls Royce. I know Rolls Royce doesn’t really care if your money is old or new, but there’s something staid and elegant and just a touch stuffy about any Rolls Royce. It’s for people who don’t even know how much money they have, much less how much something costs. Their expectation of luxury is far beyond anything I can even imagine.

Rolls Royce promised to show me what that might feel like.

When I first sat in the Phantom Drophead Coupe, a half a million euro plus convertible, I

felt uncomfortable. The switches and buttons were out of place, I couldn’t find the controls for the radio, and I didn’t know how to start it.

There was a twinge of panic. I didn’t belong. I didn’t even have proper cigars to put into the €5000 humidor in the glove box that I can remove and take with me. The shame was nearly unbearable. But it’s a fleeting fear, like the moment after realising it was just a bad dream. It washes away faster than a mimosa goes to your head.

Revving the 6.75-litre V-12 reminds you that you’re at the helm of a magnificent machine that demands your attention.

The smell of leather, the superbly crafted cabin that demonstrates everything can be perfectly built with wood, chrome, heavy switches, and buttons. The powerful torque pushes you into your seat with authority and confidence. The Phantom Drophead launches like an unwieldy rocket. The body rolls and sways under that much thrust, and it takes a moment to understand the controls and rein it in. That soft and compliant ride, nearly silent with the cloth top up, glidesu

i vida como periodista me ha llevado a hacer muchos viajes, viajes inusuales y maravillosos. Mi ultimo viaje a los EE.UU. con un Rolls Royce no fue ninguna excepción. Comenzamos la historia con mi parada en una estación de servicio a lo largo de la ruta 101 en California.

Yo estaba bebiendo un té helado y tomando un poco la sombra cuando un hombre local apareció desde la oficina y comenzó a hablar sobre el calor del día. A medida que la charla se terminaba vi al hombre entrecerrar los ojos y se esforzo por ver el coche a través del otro lado de la estación de servicio garaje. “¿Eso que es, es un Rolls?”, preguntó, entrecerrando los ojos más aun para ver el Phantom Drophead Coupé de color plata y azul.. Con el calor en mas que 40 grados, el coche brillaba como un espejismo estacionado entre dos camiones de granja.

“Sí, sí, es un Rolls”, continuó. “¿Por qué esta aquí?”

“Yo que se!”, le respondí, tomando un sorbo de mi té helado.

Charlamos unos minutos más sobre el espejismo brillante y luego nos despedimos.

Mientras caminaba hacia el Rolls Royce, miré hacia atrás a mi amigo de cinco minutos y le vi reírse. “Yo sabía que era suya”, dijo.

“Sus zapatos son demasiados caros para la gente de por aquí.”

Para verdaderos dueños de Rolls Royce, dudo que mi par de botas de montaña realmente me harian parecer un autentico propietario, pero estaban limpias, parecía nuevos, y se destacaron como un aguacate en un tazón de tomates. No, yo no era dueño de un Rolls, pero yo estaba en mi camino a Monterrey para conducir una milla o dos en los zapatos del dueño de un Rolls Royce - o mocasines de cuero italiano, supongo.

Ninguna marca de automóviles dice “old money” más que un Rolls Royce. Sé que Rolls Royce no le importa si su dinero es viejo o nuevo, pero hay algo sobrio y elegante y un toque pijo con los Rolls Royce. Son para las personas que ni siquiera saben cuánto dinero tienen, mucho menos cuánto cuesta algo. Su expectativa de lujo es mucho más allá de cualquier cosa, incluso que lo que yo podria imaginar. Pero es un miedo fugaz, como el momento después de darse cuenta que era sólo un mal sueño. Se disipa más rápido que una mimosa sube a la cabeza.

Acelerando el coche de 6,75 litros, V-12, te hace recordar de que estás al frente de una magnífica máquina que exige su atención.

El olor del cuero, la cabina magníficamente diseñado que demuestra que todo puede ser perfectamente construido con madera, cromo, interruptores pesados, y los botones.

El motor de531 lb-pie te empuja en su asiento con autoridad y confianza. El Phantom Drophead lanza como un cohete difícil de manejar. El cuerpo se mueve mucho bajo tanto empuje, y se necesita un momento para entenderlo y controlar. Eso paseo suave y dócil, casi en silencio, con el techo de lona

para arriba, se desliza sobre los baches. En la carretera, el Phantom Drophead Coupé es puro placer. Los kilometros pasan sin nisiquiera un recuerdo. El descapotable le mima de todas las formas imaginables.

Algunas personas pueden reconocer el coche como conservador, pero real a la vez, mientra va pasando, la mayoría no lo hacen, no importa. Lo que otros piensan cuando usted está conduciendo este coche es intrascendente. No necesita la aprobación o desestimación de ninguna otra persona.

Mientras hacia mi camino a la taberna de Spanish Bay, otro tema antiguo, pero de lujo, el Fantasma se hizo mucho menos amable. Las carreteras con curvas cerradas no eran el mejor amigo de este coche. La dirección relativamente insensible hacía difícil mantener una línea en las esquinas, y ninguno de mis velocidades eran rapidas.

Pero una vez más, no importaba. Para entonces, el techo se habia quitado, el viento soplaba en mi cara y alrededor de Monterrey, la gente simplemente asumieron que era mío, lo que era suficientemente para mí. u OCIO magazine

over bumps. On the motorway, the Phantom Drophead Coupe is pure pleasure. The miles pass by without even a memory. The convertible coddles you in every conceivable way.

Some people may recognise the conservative but regal car as it passes.

Most do not. It doesn’t matter. What other people think when you’re driving this car is inconsequential. I do not need anyone else’s approval or dismissal.

As I made my way toward The Inn at Spanish Bay, another old but luxurious item, the Phantom became much less friendly. The tight curvy roads were not this car’s best friend. The relatively numb steering made it difficult to hold a line through a corner, and none of my speeds were approaching blistering. But again, it didn’t matter. By then, the top was down, the wind blowing in my face and around Monterey, people merely assumed it was mine which was good enough for me.

The valet knew where to grab the door handle (something I often forgot, approaching the car as if it had normal doors with handles located to the rear, not the front) and let me out. Well versed in high-end vehicles, he knew exactly what I was driving, though he might be disappointed to learn that I rarely tip like many of the real owners staying at The Inn. The following day, the Rolls Royce people decided to give our small group the complete experience. We were chauffeured to the Nickel & Nickel winery for a tasting of some of their finest single vineyard cabernets and meticulously paired cheeses. From there, we went to the Far Niente estate where the proprietor, Beth Nickel, shared with us her late husband, Gil’s, car collection and fascinating stories about the winery.

Beth Nickel symbolises Rolls Royce to me. She is confident without arrogance, personable without being familiar. She’s timeless with respect for the past but with her feet firmly planted in the here and now.

Perhaps it was the second glass of Dolce going to my head or the seductive program Rolls Royce had created, but she was simply the best person I have ever met in Napa Valley. Of course, I was living the pretend Rolls Royce life, trying it on like a shirt a half size too small. I never got too comfortable but tried to appreciate it for what it was: a glimpse through a second row window where the sun always shines and wine is properly 46 OCIO magazine

chilled. Living that life for real is likely better.

Beth Níquel simboliza Rolls Royce para mí. Ella tiene confianza sin arrogancia, es agradable sin ser familiar. Ella es intemporal con respeto por el pasado, pero con los pies firmemente plantados en el aquí y ahora. Tal vez fue la segunda copa de Dolce que me ha subido la cabeza o el programa seductora que Rolls Royce había creado, pero ella era simplemente la mejor persona que he conocido en Napa Valley.

Por supuesto, yo estaba viviendo la vida de mentira de Rolls Royce, como probando una camiseta de un tamaño demasiado pequeño.

The Art of Tapas Tapas is so much more than just a small snack with your drink, it has history and purpose and in some kitchens it is considered an art form

O

ne of the charms of Spain is the culture of tapas.

Tapas originated in the southern province of Andalusia. The word tapa means “to top” and the tradition started accidentally when vendors used a piece of bread to cover the customer’s drinks, so that flying insects wouldn’t drown in the wine.

Customers were eating the bread and vendors began to top it with thin slices of ham or cheese to make it more palatable for the customers, who were also drinking more with a little bits of salty food. As time went on other food items were added and the Spanish tapa was born. It became part of the culture to have a bite of this or

that with a every glass of wine, sherry or beer out in the bars and restaurants.

Today there are tapas zones and tapas bars in every village, town and city throughout Spain. However small the area might be, you will see signs for tapas bar along the streets and promenades.

There are different categories of tapas, from simple to more complex.

The simplest include olives, cheese, sausages, ham, marinated vegetables and other items that don’t require cooking.

Grilled tapas may include vegetables, seafood or meats. Artichokes appear in various forms, from fried to boiled to grilled. Potatoes are roasted and drizzled u

La palabra tapa significa “tapadera” y su tradición empezó por casualidad cuando los vendedores usaban un trozo de pan para cubrir las bebidas de sus clientes, para que no cayeran insectos al vino. Los clientes se comían el pan y los vendedores empezaron a ponerle finas lonchas de jamón o queso para hacerlo más apetitoso para sus clientes, los cuales comiendo algo salado incluso bebían más. Peppers and tomatoes are roasted and chopped together in a warm salad style, small green peppers are grilled and served whole de Padron style (“Russian Roulette”, you may get a hot one). Spanish omelette is of course made with eggs and potatoes and is often cut into wedges or squares and served in various sizes.

Vegetables are roasted and drizzled with oil, chick peas are served in a light stew, sometimes with spinach. The possibilities are endless. I have seen Russian salad, stuffed hardboiled eggs, empanadas, meatballs, chicken, lamb and more. Ham is one of the specialties and you see it in various forms and of varying quality. Be careful here as the best jamon is usually very expensive.

Seafood of one kind or another are some of the most popular tapas choices it seems, at least here on the Mediterranean coastline: squid, prawns, sardines, octopus, fish, clams, mussels, eels, snails and several other crustaceans that I am sure you have never seen or heard of, let alone tasted.

Not only the tapas are varied, but how the Spanish eat them also changes through the regions. In places like Madrid, Málaga and Barcelona locals go on a tapas crawl they call tapeo, going from one bar to another, all clustered in the tapas zones where tapas bars or tavernas line the streets. They taste one or two tapas in each before proceeding to the next bar. Often you’d be eating and drinking standing up at the counter as you chat with friends and family.

On my travels I have always found cultures and behaviour fascinating.

What I find in Spain is that people do not entertain in their homes the way they do in the UK. The concept of inviting someone to your home for coffee or dinner is not common. You go out for coffee and have dinner with friends at restaurants, not at home. The home is reserved for family only, or perhaps very close friends. As far as tapas are concerned, they are a bar thing, you go to the bars to have tapas, not at home. Not only is there a refreshing selection of tapas whilst you are out and about in the bars but quite frankly, it’s probably cheaper to eat out with tapas than it is to eat in...and it’s so much more fun! n

Hoy en día hay zonas y bares de tapas en cada pueblo o ciudad por toda España. Por muy pequeño que sea el lugar, podremos ver carteles de bares de tapas por las calles y avenidas Hay diferentes categorías de tapas, de las más simple a la más elaborada.

La más sencilla incluye aceitunas, queso, salchichas, jamón, embutidos y otras cosas que no tengan que ser cocinadas.

Se sirven patatas fritas aliñadas con salsa de tomate picante y mahonesa (patatas a la brava). Se prepara pisto de verduras, se asan pimientos verdes pequeños y se sirven enteros (los así

llamados pimientos de patrón que como dice el refrán: “unos pican y otros no”).

La tortilla española se hace con huevos y patatas y se corta en porciones de diferentes tamaños. Se fríen verduras rehogadas en aceite de oliva, garbanzos cocidos se sirven algunas veces con espinacas.

Hay infinitas posibilidades.

He visto ensaladilla rusa, huevos cocidos, empanadilla, albóndigas, pollo, cordero y más.

El jamón es una de las especialidades y se puede ver en diferentes maneras y calidades. Tenga cuidado, aquí el mejor jamón es normalmente muy caro.

Pescado y mariscos parecen ser las tapas más populares sobretodo aquí en la costa mediterránea: calamares, gambas, sardinas, pulpo, pescado, almejas, mejillones, anguilas, y muchos otros crustáceos que estoy seguro que Usted no habrá nunca escuchado hablar de ellos y menos aún probados.

Hay tantas variedades y tipos de tapas.

Creo que cualquier cosa que esté de temporada puede convertirse en una tapa. Las tapas también varían

según la región y tienden a resaltar las especialidades de cada región.

No solamente pueden variar las tapas sino también según la región la manera en la que se come.

En sitios como Madrid, Málaga y Barcelona los lugareños van de tapeo de bar en bar en zonas donde hay bares de tapas a lo largo de toda la calle.

Toman una o dos tapas y siguen hacia el siguiente bar. A menudo se come y se bebe de pie en la barra mientras se habla con amigos y familiares.

En mis viajes siempre me han fascinado la cultura y las costulmbres. Lo que he notado en España es que la gente no se entretiene en sus casas como lo hacen en el Reino Unido. La costumbre de invitar a alguien a un café o a cenar a tu casa no es habitual.

Se sale para tomar un café o a cenar con amigos al restaurante, no en casa. El hogar es solo para familiares, o amigos muy cercanos. En lo que se refiere a las tapas, es cosa de bares, se sale al bar para tomar tapas, no en casa. No solamente hay una variedad inmensa de tapas cuando sales a un bar sino que sinceramente es más barato comer fuera de tapeo que comer en casa...y es mucho más divertido! n OCIO magazine

The all new Legends bar in Torre del Mar enjoyed a fabulous official opening party on the 17th October.

Family, friends and guests came from far and wide to support new owners Rachel, Shaun and Mattie and enjoy a most fantastic fun filled night.

London’s West End award winning singer Johnny Amobi was flown in especially for the night to entertain the guests with his incredible repertoire of songs from West End shows combined with some unforgettable disco classics and modern dance floor hits.

The party continued until the early hours of the morning as guests sipped chilled cava and dined on the beautifully prepared buffet.

It was a perfect night to declare the new Legends Bar officially open for business!

Costa Women Axarquia enjoyed a wonderful Wine Tasting/Food Pairing evening at ‘La Esquinita’ gastro bar in Torre del Mar for their October event. The event was very well attended and some lovely wines were enjoyed from a winery just outside Antequera in Fuente de Piedra. The food presented was a perfect accompaniment to the wine. La Esquinita is a typical family run Spanish tapas bar & restaurant and serves delicious home made recipes as tapas, raciones and full meals. The ambience is warm & friendly and is a great place to meet up with friends.

Chicken and Chorizo Winter Stew Chorizo...this highly-flavoured pork sausage will turn even the simplest of winter stews into something quite special

D

uring the Spanish winter, two of the most common places you’ll find chorizo are in hearty soups and a range of stews. These dishes are full of flavour and colour, and are guaranteed to add a little zing to your cold weather kitchen repertoire. Here we combine chorizo with chicken for a delicious winter warmer for you and your family.

Ingredients: 2 chorizo sausage sliced 2 small diced onions 1 diced celery stick 2 cloves garlic crushed & finely chopped 1 diced red capsicum 1/2 tsp dried basil leaves 1/4 tsp hot paprika 64 OCIO magazine

1/2 cup dry white wine 1/2 tsp salt and pepper 6 sliced chicken thighs 2 ltrs vegetable stock (liquid) 1 tbs sugar 3 ripe tomatoes cut into pieces 6 cups of mashed sweet potato

Preparation: Heat a little olive oil in a heavy base stock pot over medium heat. SautĂŠ onions, gralic and celery until the onions are translucent.

Add chorizo, red capsicum, paprika and basil and continue to cook until onions are well caramelised. Turn up heat, add chicken and stir until chicken is no longer pink on the outside.

Add wine and reduce by half liquid

content. Turn heat back down to low and add vegetable stock, tomatoes, beans, sugar, salt and pepper to taste. Cook for approximately 30 minutes or until the vegetables are soft and the chicken cooked.

To serve, add the mashed sweet potato and stir well.

NOTES: Use chicken thighs or one whole chicken breast, slice into 1cm x 3cm strips. Cut ripe tomatoes into eighths and green beans into 3cm lengths. Increase the paprika if you want more kick and add more sweet potato to thicken the consistency as you desire. This dish can be made in a slow cooker or placed in a casserole dish and baked at 1800C for half an hour. n

urante el invierno español, dos de las formas mas comunes que encontrarás del chorizo, están en sopas grandes y una variedad de estofados. Estos platos son llenos de sabor y de color, y están garantizados para añadir un poco de placer a tu repertorio de la cocina del invierno. Aquí combinamos el chorizo con pollo para una deliciosa comida caliente de invierno para ti y tu familia.

Ingredientes: 2 trozos de chorizos en rebanadas 2 cebollas pequeñas cortadas en cubitos 1 tallo de apio cortado en cubitos 2 dientes de ajo machacado, cortados en trozos pequeños 1 pimiento rojo cortado en cubitos 1/2 cucharita de hojas secas de albahaca

1/4 cucharita de pimentón picante 1/2 taza de vino blanco seco 1/2 cucharita de sal y pimienta 6 muslos del pollo rebanados 2 litros caldo de verduras (líquido) 1 cuchara de azúcar 3 tomates maduros cortados en pedazos 6 tazas de batata triturada

Añade el vino y reduce por la mitad del contenido del liquido. Baja el fuego al mínimo y añade el caldo de verduras, los tomates, habas, azúcar, sal y la pimienta para probar. Cocina para aproximadamente 30 minutos o hasta que las verduras son tiernas y el pollo cocido. Para servir, añade el puré de batatas y remover bien.

Preparación: Calienta un poco de aceite

NOTAS: Utiliza muslos de pollo o una

de oliva en una olla grande a temperatura media. Saltear las cebollas, ajo y apio hasta que las cebollas son translúcidos.

Añade el chorizo, pimiento rojo, pimentón y albahaca y continúa cocinando hasta que las cebollas son bien caramelizadas.

Incrementa el fuego, añade el pollo y remueva hasta que el pollo no este rosado en el exterior.

pechuga de pollo entero, rebanada en tiras de 1cm x 3cm. Corta los tomates maduros en cuatro trozos y las judías verdes en longitudes de 3cm. Hecha más pimentón si quieres más picante y añade más batata para espesar la consistencia como quieras.

Este plato se puede hacer en una cazuela eléctrica o colocado en una cazuela y cocer al horno a 180ºC para media hora. n OCIO magazine
