With careful planning your outdoor space can be functional as well as aesthetically pleasing.

Budget is often a consideration but do not let this small inconvenience sway you into buying cheap plastic furniture for a living area that you are trying to achieve so much more with. As with most things in life, and buying outdoor furniture is no exception, you really do get what you pay for and good furniture will last you many years.

When purchasing outdoor furniture, you are no longer limited in colour or materials. There is an abundance of choice available in aluminium, plastic, polymer, resin, steel, wicker, rattan, wrought iron and of course wood and each material has it’s own benefits. For example, plastic, polymer and resin furniture requires no maintenance, is highly durable and resistant to moisture, stains, mildew and insects. Most of the modern style furniture of today is made from these high quality materials. Wicker & rattan furniture are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use and will give a somewhat coastal and rustic feel to your space. For the metal materials, wrought iron is heavy and solid but does require some maintenance and care to avoid rust. Steel is a little lighter and aluminum lighter still. As a general rule, all metal furniture will benefit greatly from fade resisitant, all weather fabric cushions for colour and comfort. And finally wood.

The traditional material for high quality furniture comes in various shapes, sizes and even materials. Teak, cedar and pine are popular for garden furniture and the choice in styles is almost limitless. From poolside chaise lounges to picnic tables perfect for summer barbeques, modern outdoor furniture is made to withstand the elements and give you the design and style you need for your space and needs.

Whatever material, style or design you choose, finish off with a variety of small scale objects such as brightly coloured cushions, candles, lanterns and sculptures to add life and personality to your outdoor space. n

n the 19th and 20th of May Kempinski Hotel Bahia is hosting the “Sport of Kings” on the Playa Padron, in Estepona. During two days of glamour and exciting polo matches, four international polo teams will compete for the first ‘Costa del Sol Beach Polo Cup 2018’.

Matches will be played from 18.00 to 20.00 on Saturday 19th of May and from 12.00 to 14.00 on Sunday 20th of May. Entrance is free, food and drinks may be purchased next to the polo arena and at El Paseo Del Mar, the new restaurant complex at Kempinski Hotel Bahía.

There will also be a VIP marquee with ticketed entry, entertainment, fabulous food and champagne. VIP packages are available for those who wish to join in the full event of Gala Dinner, Polo Chic Lunch and VIP marquee entrance.

It is quite common (and perfectly acceptable) to just sunbathe or dip your feet in the edge of the pool without actually getting into the pool, so take the opportunity to wear that beautiful-butimpractical swimwear. Whether it’s an off-shoulder swimsuit or a crochet bikini, who cares if you can’t actually swim in it, as long as it looks good.

It’s generally good etiquette to cover up when you move away from the pool and surrounding sun-loungers, to order a strawberry daquiri from the nearby bar or to head back to your hotel room or cruise ship cabin.

luxury resort, a floaty kaftan is practically a must-have! Show off your tanned legs in a hip-length version, or up the wow factor with a full-length one. If you’re looking for a bit more coverage, for example to take you straight from poolside to brunch at the restaurant, pack eye-catching day wear pieces such as dresses and loose trousers that look laid-back but not too casual.

Cafe Central, Plaza de la Constitucion Start your day the Malagueno way with coffee and a ‘pitufo’ in Cafe Central. This family business has been on Malaga’s main square since the 1950s. The original owner invented the 9 different ways we take coffee in Malaga. At one point Cafe Central was open 23 hours per day - closing for only one hour per night to clean. Sit on the sunny terrace and watch the world go by as you enjoy your breakfast. Also worth noting that their churros - or tejeringos as they are known here - are made fresh on site to order.

Café Central, Plaza de la Constitución Comienza tu día al estilo malagueño con un café con pitufo en el Café Central.

Este negocio familiar ha estado en esta plaza principal de Málaga desde los años 50. Su propietario original creó los 9 tipos diferentes de café que tomamos en Málaga. En un momento el Café Central estaba abierto 23 horas al día – cerrando tan solo una hora por la noche para limpiar. Siéntate en su soleada terraza y relájate disfrutando de tu desayuno. esta plaza es Cal y Canto, escondido en la esquina, donde sirven el más fresco y delicioso marisco. Si te apetece una tapa elige el salmón marinado, o comparte un fresco atún a la parrilla (de uno de los puntos de pesca de atún más sostenibles del mundo en la vecina provincia de Cádiz).

Terraza de San Juan Hay multitud de terrazas para elegir en las azoteas de Málaga – cada una con su toque único. Una de mis favoritas es la Terraza de San Juan, en la azotea del Hotel Málaga Premium en la Calle San Juan.

Casi puedes sentarte sobre la misma torre de la iglesia de San Juan, y las vistas son increíbles. El lugar perfecto para la puesta

de sol, que con la caída de la noche se convierte en un lugar de fiesta genial en Málaga.

Actualidad El Festival de Gastronomía de Málaga se celebra del 17 al 27 de mayo. Esta es la quinta edición de esta fabulosa feria gastronómica, con aún más expositores y demostraciones que en años anteriores ¡sigue creciendo y volviéndose mejor!

on the terrace seating really feels like being on holiday. My personal favourite spot on the plaza is Cal y Canto, tucked away in the corner and serving the most delicious fresh seafood. If you fancy a tapa go for the marinated salmon, or share the fresh grilled tuna (from one of the most sustainable tuna fishing sources in the world in neighbouring Cadiz province) Terraza De San Juan There are many roof terraces to choose from in Malaga - each with their own unique selling point. One of my favourites is Terraza de San Juan, on the roof of Malaga Premium Hotel in Calle San Juan. You sit almost on top of the tower of San Juan church and the rooftop views are incredible. The perfect place for a sundowner, and after dark it becomes a cool party spot for the who’s

who of Malaga.

What’s On Malaga Gastronomy Festival will be held from 17 to 27 May. This is the fifth edition of this fabulous food fair, with even more exhibitors and demonstrations invited than in previous years - it just keeps getting bigger and better! Not to be missed.

Costa Women Málaga Sherry tasting & pairing at La Vinoteca de Moreno in Málaga The Costa Women Malaga enjoyed a fun ‘Sherry Tasting & Pairing’ for their April event. The venue was at the very stylish and recently rebranded ‘La Vinoteca de Moreno’ restaurant, in Malaga’s ‘Eat Street’ (Calle Moreno Monroy).

It was a popular event with 15 ladies attending. Ladies were welcomed with a glass of Cava, before sitting down to enjoy an evening of relaxed, fun learning. As well as trying and learning about perhaps Andalusia’s most famous type of wine - sherry, La Vinoteca de Moreno offered guests a pairing of one of their delicious tapas with each wine tasted.

Costa Women Malaga hold monthly events throughout the year and is part of ‘Costa Women Spain’. You can join the local ‘Costa Women Malaga’ facebook group to keep up to date with the local monthly events and group activities.

Las chicas de Costa Women Málaga disfrutaron de una divertida “Cata y Maridaje de Jerez” durante su evento de Abril. El local fue el estiloso y recientemente renombrado restaurante ‘La Vinoteca de Moreno’, en la Calle Moreno Monroy de Málaga.

Se trató de un evento concurrido al que asistieron 15 chicas. Fueron bienvenidas con una copa de Cava, antes de sentarse para disfrutar una tarde de relajado y divertido aprendizaje. Además de catar y aprender sobre uno de los vinos más conocidos de Andalucía – el Jérez, La Vinoteca de Moreno ofreció a sus invitadas el maridaje de cada uno de los vinos con una de sus deliciosas tapas.

et us start with your Chi and learn what it is and why we should enhance it? Chi (Qi) is your “life force” or “vital energy”. When you are healthy you have an abundance of chi flowing smoothly along the energy pathways of your body, known as meridians. If chi becomes blocked along one of these pathways the organ it usually nourishes will not work optimally.

Acupuncturists are specialists in the art of releasing these blockages to help your body to restore the natural energy flow.

Another useful tool in this type of treatment is acupressure. Acupressure is very effective in relieving all kinds of ailments including allergies, which always seem very common at this time of year.

Allergies can be annoying to say the least and to help alleviate this we use several acupressure points. If you are currently suffering with a seasonal allergy try this simple self help treatment. Apply pressure to the point known as LI11 “Qichi”. You can find this point by bending your elbow and running your finger to the end of your elbow crease.

There are many ways to enhance your Chi. Here are a few simple but again, very effective tips for you to try at home.

1. Breathe deeply and be conscious of your thoughts.

2. Nourish your body, choose fruit and vegetables that are in season, if possible organic without chemical additives.

3. Spend time in nature.

4. Sleep and relax. Make time to meditate for a few minutes every day. “Sleep is the best meditation” - Dalai Lama.

éjanos comenzar con tu Chi, enseñarte lo que es y por qué deberíamos mejorarlo.

Chi (Qi) es tu “fuerza vital” o “energía vital”.

Cuando estás saludable cuentas con un abundante Chi que fluye suavemente por los conductos de energía de tu cuerpo, conocidos como meridianos. Si el Chi resulta bloqueado a lo largo de uno de estos caminos, el órgano que se alimenta de él no funcionará de forma óptima. Los acupuntores son especialistas en el arte de liberar estos bloqueos para ayudar a que tu cuerpo restablezca su flujo de energía natural.

Otra herramienta útil en este tipo de tratamientos es la acupresión. La acupresión es muy efectiva aliviando todo tipo de enfermedades, incluyendo alergias, siempre tan comunes en esta época del año.

Las alergias pueden ser molestas como mínimo, y para ayudar a mitigarlas podemos usar muchos puntos de acupresión. Si actualmente estás padeciendo una alergia estacional intenta este sencillo tratamiento.

Aplica presión sobre el punto conocido como el Ll11 “Quichi”. Puedes encontrar este punto doblando tu codo y desplazando tu dedo hasta el final del pliegue del codo.

There are very few cars like the Ferrari 812 Superfast: those that terrify, excite and amaze all at the same time. The mighty 789bhp 6.5-litre power unit is the star of the show and is a fitting swansong for what could be the firm’s last naturally aspirated V12 engine.

verything about the Ferrari 812 Superfast is exceptional. The price is a stratospheric £262,963. The engine, a 6.5-litre V12 churning out 789bhp, is the most powerful naturally aspirated motor ever to find its way under the nose of a production car. And the name, 812 Superfast, is a bold but fitting title for one of the most exhilarating performance cars money can buy.

Following my first drive in the idyllic surroundings of the Italian hills last year, I am now bringing the 812 into the real world and on to the damp, rutted and congested roads of the UK to see if its appeal can be stifled.

Now we can all agree, I am sure, that styling is subjective, but to my eyes the car has a beautiful balance of menace and elegance and on a miserable day in the UK it attracts attention like Beyonce at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

Tras mi primer viaje el año pasado por los idílicos alrededores de las montañas italianas, toca ahora llevar al 812 al mundo real y a las saturadas, empedradas y húmedas carreteras de Reino Unido, para ver si su atractivo puede ser descalificado.

Estamos de acuerdo en que el estilo es subjetivo, pero a mis ojos el coche tiene un hermoso equilibrio entre amenaza y elegancia y en un deprimente día en el Reino Unido, atrae la atención como Beyonce en Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

El 812 no se siente como en casa de inmediato. Es tan ancho como un Range Rover y más bajo que un Porsche 718 Cayman, pero se conduce con mucha más facilidad de lo que esperaba inicialmente.

than a Porsche 718 Cayman, yet it rides with far more civility than you’d initially expect. It’s also relatively quiet; the 812 will pootle along with traffic at 30mph in seventh gear without any fuss - the sevenspeed dual clutch gearbox shuffling through the ratios without detection. Crawl out of the city and into the countryside and this V12 monster continues to stagger and delight in equal measure.

On a tight British B-road its sheer size becomes more apparent but on an open stretch a simple squeeze on the throttle brings such an explosive performance it’s mildly terrifying. Ferrari says 0-62mph is over in 2.9 seconds and the way it continues to build speed is absolutely relentless. The noise from the mighty 6.5-litre V12 starts as a sharp-edged gargle and crescendos to a deafening howl. Pull the huge carbon shift paddle and the gearbox slams home another ratio as you’re slingshotted towards the next corner. When you get there, Ferrari’s treasure trove of electrical tech helps get you round as fast as possible; Side Slip Control, Four Wheel Steering and Active Aerodynamics combine to generate impressive front end grip in the wet and ballerina levels of agility.

The 812’s limits are so high, its range of abilities so great, the occasions when you can use everything it has are so rare. But for those moments when you can, it’s one of the most jaw dropping driving experiences (a lot of) money can buy. n 52 OCIO magazine

he Art of Sabrage is the opening of a bottle of Champagne (or good Cava) using a saber.

The technique originated in France during the Napoleonic wars. The story says that the legendary Barbe Nicole Ponsardin, known today as Veuve Clicquot, would give bottles of Champagne to the officers, to take away with them to be able to enjoy before battle. One day, in a show of swordmanship, a young officer took out his sword and beheaded a bottle with a stroke of his blade. Ever since a new tradition, which soon became an art, was born: The Art of Sabrage.

But how is this done I hear you ask? First of all Sabrage should not be executed by somebody who is not experienced, unless it’s under direct supervision of a Master Sabreur. It is highly recommended that the Champagne bottle is kept in the refrigerator, at least four hours before the sabrage.

Don’t keep the bottle in ice, because the most important part of it – the neck – is the part that is not being chilled properly. The ideal temperature of a Champagne bottle 58 OCIO magazine

prepared for Sabrage is 45-48 F. There are specially made “Champagne Sabers” for the process, but it is not absolutley necessary. The back of a heavy chef’s knife will do it, but it does lack a degree of ceremony. When you perform the Sabrage, you will have to hit the bottle at its weakest point. Every bottle of Champagne has two possible weak points. Let’s find them: As you look carefully at the bottle, you will notice that there are two lines, two glass seams that run vertically from the bottom to the top, this is from when the bottle was made. Also, you will see at the top, the glass lip, known as annulus, that helps with wrapping the cage (the wire basket), around the neck of the bottle. Now the point where you want to hit the bottle with your sword is where the seam crosses the glass ring. This is the weakest point of the bottle. It is highly recommended that you take the cage off to perform Sabrage. It can be done with the cage on, just peeling off the foil around the neck, but it does make the sabrage more difficult with the cage on, so cage and foil off

is better. When you’re ready to go, hold the Champagne bottle away from you pointed upwards at a 45 degree angle to the ground and run the blade along the seam, taking a few practice strokes. Then, briskly slide the blade along the seam with an “up and out” motion and pop the top right off that bottle!

The pressure release ensures that no glass falls back into the bottle, so the wine is nice and clean but, remember the end of the bottle is now very sharp, so please do not be tempted to drink from the bottle.

Having sabraged your bottle, you are now obliged to circulate amoungst your gathering and pour them a glass of your successfully sabraged Champagne.

It is not absolutley necessary to have Champagne in order to do sabrage. Cava will work just as well but you must use a Cava that is labelled with Métode Traditional. This labelling ensures the bottle is manufactured in the same way as Champagne and thus will sabrage just as well. As a general rule, the more expensive the bottle the easier it is to sabrage...and to drink! n

l Arte del Sabrage es la apertura de una botella de Champagne (o buen Cava) usando un sable.

La técnica se originó en Francia durante las guerras napoleónicas. La historia cuenta que la legendaria Barbe Nicole Ponsardin, hoy conocida como Veuve Clicquot, regalaba botellas de champán a los oficiales, para llevarlas consigo y poder disfrutarlas antes de la batalla. Un día, en una demostración de destreza con la espada, un joven oficial sacó su espada y decapitó una botella con un golpe de su hoja. Desde entonces nació una nueva tradición, que pronto se convirtió en un arte: El Arte de Sabrage. ¿Pero cómo se hace esto, escucho que preguntas? En primer lugar, Sabrage no debe ser ejecutado por alguien que no tenga experiencia, a menos que sea bajo la supervisión directa de un Maestro Sableur.

Es muy recomendable que la botella de Champagne se mantenga en el refrigerador, al menos cuatro horas antes del sabotaje.

La temperatura ideal de una botella de Champagne preparada para Sabrage es de 7-9 ºC. Hay “sables de champán” especialmente hechos para el proceso, pero no es absolutamente necesario. La parte de atrás del cuchillo de un chef pesado lo hará, pero le falta un poco de ceremonia. Cuando realice la Sabrage, tendrá que golpear la botella en su punto más débil. Cada botella de champán tiene dos posibles puntos débiles, vamos a encontrarlos. Al mirar cuidadosamente la botella, notará que hay dos líneas, dos costuras de vidrio que corren verticalmente de abajo hacia arriba, de cuando la botella fue fabricada. Además,

en la parte superior verá el labio de vidrio, conocido como anillo, que ayuda a envolver la jaula (la cesta de alambre), alrededor del cuello de la botella. El punto en el que quieres golpear la botella con tu espada es cuando la costura cruza el anillo de vidrio.

Este es el punto más débil de la botella. Se recomienda encarecidamente que se quite la jaula para realizar Sabrage. Puede hacerse con la jaula puesta, simplemente pelando la lámina alrededor del cuello, pero hace que el sabotaje sea más difícil, así que es mejor que quite la jaula y la lámina. Cuando estés listo para empezar, mantén la botella de champán lejos de ti apuntando hacia arriba en un ángulo de 45 grados con respecto al suelo y desliza la cuchilla a lo largo de la costura, haciendo unos cuantos golpes de práctica.

Luego, deslice enérgicamente la cuchilla a lo largo de la costura con un movimiento de “subida y bajada” y saca la tapa de la botella.

La liberación de presión asegura que ningún vidrio caiga de nuevo en la botella, por lo que el caldo estará agradable y limpio, pero recuerde, el final de la botella es ahora muy agudo, así que por favor no se sienta tentado a beber de la botella.

Después de hacer Sabrage con éxito en tu botella, ahora estás obligado a circular por tu reunión y servirles una copa de tu Champagne.

No es absolutamente necesario tener Champagne para hacer Sabrage. El cava funcionará igual de bien, pero debes usar un cava que esté etiquetado con el nombre de Métode Tradicional. Este etiquetado asegura que la botella se fabrique de la misma manera que el champán y por lo tanto se hará Sabrage igual de bien. Beach Barbecue Season T

he month of May sees the start of the beach barbecue season, known as the Moraga, which runs from 1st May through till the end of September. Traditionally, a Moraga is a nighttime barbeque party, usually held on the beach. It is very popular within the Malaga province, but is also found in other parts of Andalucia.

Historically the Moraga came about in celebration of the catching of fish in the shallow waters with small nets. The fish would be roasted on small wood fires made on the beach and the feast would be accompanied by an evening of guitar music, singing and dancing. These days, Moragas still take place, but without the fishing and have become a simple fun day (or evening) where wood roasted sardines, as well as other types of fish are enjoyed.

As you know, the roasting of sardines on wooden sticks (known as an espeto) is a skilled operation with much pride being taken on what is nothing short of an art form.

coast have been using old fishing boats filled with sand as the base for the cooking of the espeto for the past 30 years and the tradition continues. Various coastal towns allow residents and guests alike to hold their own Moraga and some towns even offer the use of sand filled boats or containers. But even without a sand filled boat you can hold your very own Moraga using a barbecue.

However, you can’t just pop down to the beach and take a barbecue, obviously. There are beaches allocated to the use of a Moraga but you must ask for and receive permission first. This is very easy to do online by filling in a form known as the formulario de solicitud de Moraga (Moraga request form). You will need your ID or passport number and you will need to know the date when you want to hold your Moraga and how many people will be attending. There is no fee to pay.

Permission is quick and easy but still it can take a few days to receive, so make sure you apply for permission in good time.

Most people start their Moraga in the late afternoon as the sun is setting, but you

can start anytime that suits you. However, a Moraga is not permission to camp on the beach. A Moraga must finish by 02.00.

When vacating the beach, you must tidy up and either put all rubbish in the bins provided or take the rubbish with you.

Do not underestimate the things that you will need to carry down to the beach for a successful Moraga. Folding tables, beach chairs, firewood or charcoal, barbecue, food to cook plus salads and bread, serving plates, paper plates and cutlery, plastic cups (not glasses) plus a cool box full of drinks and ice to name but a few. Remember that when you go down to the beach it is likely to be sunny and warm but as the sun goes down the temperature will drop, so bring along shawls or wraps to keep you warm during the evening.

The Moraga is a fun and traditional way to enjoy life on the coast. Try it once and the Moraga will become a regular summer event for you, your family and your friends and, if one of you can play the guitar...even better! n

Temporada de Moragas

n el mes de mayo comienza la temporada de barbacoas en la playa, conocidas como Moragas; va desde el 1 de mayo hasta finales de septiembre.

Tradicionalmente, una moraga es una fiesta nocturna de barbacoa, generalmente en la playa. Es muy popular en la provincia de Málaga, pero también se da en otras partes de Andalucía.

Históricamente, la Moraga nació para celebrar la captura de peces en aguas poco profundas con pequeñas redes. El pescado se asaba en pequeñas hogueras de leña hechas en la playa y la fiesta iba acompañada de una velada de música de guitarra, cantos y bailes. Hoy en día, se han convertido en un simple día de diversión (o noche) donde se disfrutan las sardinas espetadas y otros tipos de pescado.

Como usted sabe, el asado de sardinas en palitos de madera (conocido como espeto) es una operación que require cierta habilidad y que con mucho orgullo es considerada un arte. Muchos chiringuitos a lo largo de la costa andaluza han estado

usando viejos barcos de pesca llenos de arena como base para la cocina del espeto durante los últimos 30 años y la tradición continúa. Varios pueblos costeros permiten a residentes y huéspedes celebrar su propia Moraga y algunos pueblos ofrecen el uso de barcos o contenedores llenos de arena. Pero incluso sin un barco lleno de arena, se puede celebrar su propia Moraga utilizando una barbacoa.

Sin embargo, no puede ir a la playa y hacer una barbacoa sin más, obviamente. Hay playas asignadas al uso de moragas, pero primero debes pedir y recibir permiso.

Esto es muy fácil de hacer, rellenando un formulario en línea conocido como formulario de solicitud de moraga.

Necesitará su DNI o pasaporte, la fecha en la que quiere hacer su moraga y el número de personas que asistirán. No hay que pagar nada. El permiso es rápido y fácil, pero aún así puede tardar en recibirse unos días, así que asegúrese de solicitarlo con tiempo.

La mayoría de la gente empieza su moraga

a última hora de la tarde, al caer el sol, pero usted puede empezar en el momento que le convenga. Sin embargo, una moraga no es un permiso para acampar en la playa, así que debe terminar a las 02.00. Al desalojar la playa, hay que recoger toda la basura y ponerla en los cubos de basura o llevarla con usted.

No subestime las cosas que necesitará llevar a la playa para tener éxito. Mesas plegables, sillas de playa, leña o carbón, barbacoa, comida para cocinar, ensaladas y pan, platos para servir, platos de papel y cubiertos, vasos de plástico (no de vidrio) más una nevera llena de bebidas y hielo por nombrar sólo algunos. Recuerde que cuando usted llega estará soleado y hará calor, pero cuando el sol se va, la temperatura baja, así que traiga ropa de abrigo para no pasar frío durante la noche. La Moraga es una forma divertida y tradicional de disfrutar de la vida en la costa. Pruébalo una vez y se convertirá en un evento habitual para ti, tu familia y tus amigos y, si uno de ustedes puede tocar la guitarra... ¡aún mejor!! n OCIO magazine
