elcome to the March issue of OCIO Magazine. I think we can safely say that the winter season is behind us and we can all look forward to the warmer months ahead. Spring is always a great time to be in Spain, especially as the beaches, beach bars, Chiringuitos and restaurants all begin to come out of hibernation ready for the tourist season. This month excitement is mounting as the beautiful people of the movie world arrive in Malaga for the annual film festival, an event full of glitz and glamour.

The fashion world is also at an exciting stage as we begin to clear out our winter wardobe in preparation for the brighter seasonal colours to arrive. It is early Spring and time to prepare ourselves for the fun filled season ahead.

ienvenidos a la edición de marzo de OCIO magazine. Ya podemos decir con seguridad que el invierno ha quedado atrás y concentrarnos en los meses cálidos que se aproximan. La primavera es un momento ideal para estar en España, especialmente cuando las playas, bares, chiringuitos y restaurantes comienzan a salir de su hibernación preparados para la estación turística. La emoción aumenta este mes con las personalidades del mundo del cine que acuden a Málaga para su festival anual, un evento lleno de brillo y glamur. El mundo de la moda también está en un punto emocionante, ya que empezamos a despejar nuestro armario de ropa de invierno y prepararnos para los brillantes colores de la nueva estación. Es el comienzo de la primavera y la hora de prepararnos para una temporada llena de diversión.

ith summer approaching, bringing with it the barbecue season, all barbecue owners have the unenviable task of giving their barbecue grill a thorough clean before the season begins.

If any household chore brings about a sense of dread comparable to getting a dental root canal, it’s cleaning the BBQ grill. If you have recently purchased a new barbecue, you will quite probably already know that it only takes a summer or two for that shiny new outdoor cooker to become a greasy, stuck-on nightmare.

It is fair to say that there’s some debate among BBQ aficionados over whether you should or shouldn’t pressure wash a

As with everything there are pro’s and con’s to consider. Let’s start with a few of the pro’s: It’s a very quick way to do it. It’s so much easier too and frankly, so much more effective as a pressure washer is able to drive grime and grease out of hard to reach areas.

on la llegada del verano, y la época de barbacoas, todos los dueños de una barbacoa tienen la nada envidiable tarea de dar a la suya una concienzuda limpieza antes de que empiece la temporada.

Si hay alguna tarea doméstica que produzca un temor parecido al de hacerse una endodoncia, esa es limpiar la parrilla de tu barbacoa. Si has comprado una nueva recientemente, probablemente ya sabrás que bastan uno o dos veranos para que una barbacoa de exterior nueva y resplandeciente se convierta en una grasienta pesadilla. Limpiarla a mano

puede parecer la opción más lógica y segura, pero no es la única opción si cuentas con un limpiador a presión.

Es cierto que existe un debate entre los aficionados a las barbacoas sobre si se debe o no limpiar una barbacoa a presión. La respuesta más sencilla es que sí, siempre y cuando sigas unas reglas básicas y tomes precauciones para no dañar tu parrilla.

Como es habitual, hay pros y contras que considerar. Empecemos con los pros: Es una forma muy rápida de hacerlo. No te llevará más de 10 o 15 minutos con un limpiador a presión, mientras que a

If you’re careful and do a little prep work, however, these issues can easily be eliminated from the equation So, firstly the preparations required. For all gas grills, disconnect the grill from the gas bottle and remove it, along with any spare bottles that may be in the cleaning zone.

During the cleaning gunk is going to fly everywhere so do make sure you have plenty of space around you away from the house, cars, furniture, plants etc to avoid themn becoming dirty or damaged.

Grills mean grease, and that means you’ll need a degreaser. Be sure to use a pressure washer safe degreaser detergent. Fill the washer detergent compartment with the degreaser as directed in your owner’s manual and on the detergent bottle. With the soaping nozzle attached, apply the degreaser from the bottom to the top. Be careful not to spray directly into any heating elements.

to break down the grime and grease. Let the degreaser sit for about 3 – 5 minutes to do its thing, then rinse it well. You may want to repeat the process a couple of times to give it a thorough clean.

For really caked on grime, you can use a turbo nozzle for rinsing. But be extra careful around any heating elements.

Keep the spray wand pointed at an angle, and adjust the distance as necessary to avoid damage.

Once clean, leave your grill open and let it dry completely in the sun. This may take a full day and please don’t use it until it’s totally dry.

Once the grill is totally dry, apply olive oil to the cooking grid or grates. This makes it a nonstick surface that is resistant to rust and keeps your food from sticking.

Now that your grill is clean, dry, and oiled, hook up all the gas connections and power cords or fill your standard grill with fresh charcoal and you are ready for another fabulous season of barbecues with your family and friends. n

Las barbacoas son sinónimo de grasa, por lo que necesitarás un desengrasante. Asegúrate de usar un detergente seguro para limpiadores a presión. Llena el compartimento del detergente con el desengrasante como se indique en tu manual de instrucciones y en la botella. Aplica el desengrasante de arriba abajo con la manguera del jabón. no la uses hasta que esté totalmente seca.

Una vez que la barbacoa esté completamente seca, aplica aceite de oliva en la rejilla de cocinado. Ayudará a que sea una superficie antiadherente y resistente al óxido y prevendrá que la comida se pegue.

Ahora que tu barbacoa está limpia, seca y engrasada, conecta todas las conexiones del gas y cables eléctricos, o rellénala con carbón nuevo, y estarás listo para otra fabulosa temporada de barbacoas con tu familia y amigos. n

Brexit and the Spanish property market

H

as Brexit led to a fall in Spanish property prices? The simple answer is no. Overall Spanish property prices have continued rising since the Brexit referendum in 2016, but some coastal areas have reported a fall in British buyers.

The reason the Spanish property market has held up is that demand has come from other nationalities, such as German, Scandinavian, Irish, Russian and Chinese buyers - who have not been affected by Brexit. In addition, the Spanish economy is performing quite well in recent years, which has boosted demand from local buyers.

As the Brexit referendum took place in June 2016, we will look at what’s happened to Spanish property prices since then: 2017: +4.5% / 2018: +6.5% / 2019: +2.5% The data above is from TINSA - the market leaders in Spanish property valuations.

Even at a regional level (the Costas and Balearics), there has been a steady increase in prices. However, in spite of these increases, Spanish property prices are still around 35% below their peak and in areas outside the major cities, the discount from peak prices is even higher - in some areas over 40%. For buyers of holiday and second homes in Spain, 6 months a year is more than sufficient, so Brexit is a non-event in that situation.

Those that have already settled (become residents) in Spain prior to the UK leaving the EU have been promised the right to stay.

The Spanish government have expressed this publicly on several occasions.

If the UK finalises a deal along the lines of Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein (ie becomes part of the EEA but not EU), then British citizens will continue to be able to live, work or retire in Spain indefinitely without the need for a visa.

No doubt the pre Brexit uncertainty and the post Brexit anxiety has dented demand from British buyers but they are returning, mainly because Spain’s attractions remain. cuestión es qué camino tomará Reino Unido ahora. Los ya residentes en España cuentan con la promesa de mantener su derecho a permanecer ante la salida del Reino Unido de Europa. El gobierno español ha expresado esto públicamente varias veces.

Si finalmente Reino Unido sigue la línea de Noruega, Suiza, Islandia o Liechtenstein (formando parte del Espacio Económico Europeo pero no de la UE), los ciudadanos británicos seguirán pudiendo vivir, trabajar o jubilarse en España indefinidamente sin necesidad de visado.

Sin duda la incertidumbre previa al Brexit y la ansiedad posterior han afectado a la demanda de los compradores británicos, pero esta va recuperándose, principalmente porque los atractivos de España se mantienen. Su gran clima, estilo de vida envidiable y bajos costes siempre atraerán a los británicos, así que solo es cuestión de tiempo que la demanda vuelva a crecer. n

Flared trousers and jeans have their advantages; Flattering for most: The silhouette evens out proportions. Some of my clients with pear and inverted triangle body types prefer wearing wider trouser and jeans hems because they are forgiving and flattering.

Elegant: There is something about the swoosh of a draping hem that is ultra elegant. Tight styles to my eye, aren’t quite as elegant.

Comfortable: A pair of fluid trousers can be more comfortable than a tight tapered

style.

Retro: Flared hems have a fun ’70s retro appeal.

Refreshing: Amidst a sea of tapered styles, flared hems look refreshing.

Flares work very well on curvy bodies especially the hourglass body shape.

Choose trousers that sit below the belly button to balance your legs out.

Flares also come in high waist and low rise trousers. For a skinny frame, opt for low rise trousers.

Flares should be worn - no arguments.

Heels give the voluminous trousers more length and also help make your legs look longer. Wear them with wedges, chunky heels and platforms. Please note, in most cases these shoes will barely be visible, which makes the look even more u

The freedom skinny trousers give where you can wear almost anything with them doesn’t come with flares. Wear fitted tops in silks and satin. And, if you want to have a blazer on, let it be fitted too.

To accentuate your waist, cinch your trousers with a belt. Keep the styling modern, we are definitely not in the 70’s.

They are ideal for all those who dream of conquering the iconic passes featured in the Tour de France, as well as for those who want to spend time cycling with an enthusiast in their family.

For teenagers, husbands, wives, the young and the not-so-young, for enjoying a ride with the family “professional”, for sharing

the experience of riding a mythical route with the whole family or a bunch of friends.

E-bikes democratise cycling routes and the sport of cycling. In short, they are perfect for sharing unforgettable moments.

The technical side: Each bike is different and so are the batteries and motors.

Features vary from one model to another but basically, there are 4 modes, generally labelled Turbo, Sport, Eco and Off. Turbo: maximum boost and maximum consumption. You hardly have to provide any additional power.

Sport: significant boost, but less than in Turbo mode. Ideal for lighter weight riders.

Eco: the battery supplies 30% of the energy and your legs provide the rest.

Off mode: self-explanatory!

using the Turbo mode, the battery will last for about an hour. In Eco mode, you can ride for at least 80km. Also, remember that these bikes are lighter than they used to be, so even if the battery is completely dead, you can still pedal, even though it will feel heavier than on a normal bike! Depending on the length of the ride, you may want to take the battery charger with you so, when you stop for a drink or a taste of local tapas, you can simply plug your battery into a (220 V) outlet and you’re off again, it is as easy as that.

ho doesn’t know the feeling of imbalance, nausea and dizziness, like being on a boat or that terrible feeling when the world spins and you end up vomiting?

If these are produced by something specific such as being at sea or on a fairground ride, then the symptoms disappear once the circumstances that cause it are avoided.

But what if there is no obvious cause and if it affects us when driving, walking along the promenade or getting up from bed? Do you go to the pharmacy and ask for something for dizziness? No, because there is no effective medication for dizziness or vertigo, because both are symptoms of something being wrong with the body, they are not illnesses.

The medications calm the discomfort a little, nothing more. In the worst case they actually delay the diagnosis.

We have to investigate why it occurs. There are many possibilities, some are benign such as postural paroxysmal vertigo but unfortunately there are also serious ailments such as a stroke or a brain tumour.

It is important to see the evolution and characteristics: Does it appear and disappear like the Morbus Menière? Or does it come on like a storm and then slowly improve until it disappears. Is it like the Neuritis vestibularis 42 OCIO magazine

that is frequently related to situations of great stress or, is the discomfort related to bad posture like an orthostatic hypotension?

Of course a less frequent cause may be a vestibular migraine. Age also matters as it is not uncommon in older people to have normal pressure hydrocephalus which, along with other symptoms, causes dizziness or the sensation of having a balloon on the shoulders instead of a head. Also there are many medications which produce dizziness or vertigo as a side effect.

There’s so much more. But you can’t get treatment without a diagnosis so, if you suffer with any of these kind of symptoms it is advisable to make an appointment with a Neurologist. n

Claro que no. Por qué no? No existe

una medicación efectiva para mareo o vértigo, porque ambos son síntomas (signos de que algo esta averiado en el organismo) y no son enfermedades.

Los medicamentos calman los molestias un poco, nada más. En el peor caso retrasan el diagnóstico.

Hay que investigar por qué se produce.

Hay muchas posibilidades, algunos son benignos como el vértigo paroxístico postural pero desgraciadamente hay también dolencias serias como un infarto cerebeloso o un tumor cerebral.

Es importante ver la evolución y las características: si aparece y desaparece como el Morbus Menière, si viene como una tormenta, y mejora hasta desaparecer como la Neuritis vestibularis que frecuentemente está relacionado a situaciones de mucho estrés o si el malestar está relacionado con la postura como un hipotensión ortostática o con movimientos de la cabeza. Una causa menos frecuente puede ser una Migraña vestibular. También importa la edad: no poco frecuente en personas mayores

es una Hidrocefalia de presión normal, que junto a otras síntomas causa mareo o la sensación de tener un globo en los hombros en vez de una cabeza.

Luego hay muchos medicamentos, que

producen mareo o vértigo como efecto secundario.

ne of the biggest events in Malaga is the Malaga Film Festival. The 8-day event celebrates the very best of Spanish cinema and provides a feast of films, some of the best on screen, as well as a lot of cinema-related activities. This year is the 23rd anniversary of Malaga Film Festival and starts on Friday 13 March and finishes on Sunday 22 March.

There’s a wealth of films being screened throughout the Malaga Film Festival with some 22 official candidates for the main prize, 13 with Spanish directors and 9 with directors from Latin America. This year, the Malaga Film Festival has continued its Latin American theme by including films made in Spain and in Central and South 50 OCIO magazine

As well as the official competitors, Malaga Film Festival is screening 70 short films, 48 documentaries and 19 films outside the official competition.

The films are screened at different locations around the city centre including the Cervantes Theatre, Albéniz Cinema and the Echegaray Theatre. The Cervantes Theatre hosts the opening night of the Malaga Film Festival – probably the most

glamourous night of them all.

Because the Malaga Film Festival celebrates cinema in the Spanish language, most of the films shown throughout the event are of course in Spanish. Those that are original version (VOSE) say so on their details in the programme.

If you want to see a film you can get tickets from the box offices at the different venues, the temporary box office in Plaza de la Merced and online.

The top prize at the Malaga Film Festival is the ‘Biznaga de Oro‘ for the best film.

esde el viernes 13 de marzo al domingo 22, uno de los mayores eventos que se celebran en Málaga, el Festival de Cine de Málaga, cumplirá su 23 aniversario, congregando durante 8 días a lo más granado del cine español. Ofrece una gran variedad de películas, algunas las mejores en pantalla, así como una gran cantidad de actividades relacionadas con el cine.

Entre esa gran cantidad de películas que se proyectan durante todo el Festival de Málaga, hay 22 candidatas oficiales al premio principal, 13 con directores españoles y 9 con directores latinoamericanos. Este año, el Festival de Málaga ha continuado su temática

latinoamericana, incluyendo películas realizadas en España y en Centro y Sudamérica.

Además de los competidores oficiales, el Festival de Málaga proyectará 70 cortometrajes, 48 documentales y 19 películas fuera de la competición oficial.

Las películas se proyectan en diferentes lugares del centro de Málaga, como el Teatro Cervantes, el Cine Albéniz y el Teatro Echegaray. El Teatro Cervantes acoge la noche de inauguración del Festival de Málaga, probablemente la noche más glamurosa de todas.

For example the Promúsica Youth Orchestra plays movie sound tracks at El Balneario (at the end of the seafront after La Caleta Beach) at 11am on Sunday 10 March. The Andrews Sisters sing cinema hits from the 50s and 60s on 21 March in Bishop’s Palace at 8pm and Gospel It sings on 22 March in the Bishop’s Palace at 8pm.

And as usual, Calle Larios will become a giant red carpet for the duration of the Malaga Film Festival and around the city there will also be many exhibitions and events including food trucks selling Spanish and Latin American food on the Plaza de la Marina on Friday 21 to Sunday 23 March from 12.30 to 11pm each day and with live music too.

Ford Mustang EcoBoost by gavin davis

D

espite a drop in power, the updated Ford Mustang EcoBoost is much improved over its predecessor, primarily because of the new 10-speed auto gearbox and the optional adaptive dampers. It still may not get close to delivering the drama or the performance of the V8, but it’s closer than it’s ever been.

As Mustangs go, a four-cylinder turbocharged automatic Convertible couldn’t be further from the American dream if it was made in North Korea in a factory staffed by Russians. But bear with us, because Ford has been busy working on the facelift of its sixth-generation Mustang.

We first drove the revised V8 GT last year, but we’ve had to wait until now to try one of 56 OCIO magazine

the European-spec cars. Along with a light nip and tuck at the front and rear, Ford has added new digital dials and a 10-speed automatic gearbox.

Curiously, the four-cylinder 2.3-litre EcoBoost’s power output has dropped in order to reduce emissions and improve economy. But despite peak power dropping from 313bhp to 286bhp, it’ll sprint from 0-62mph one-tenth quicker (5.7 seconds) and hit 145mph flat out.

Of bigger significance is that new 10-speed automatic gearbox. Having sampled it in the V8 previously, we concluded that while it’s an improvement over the six-speed auto it replaces, it still doesn’t offer the immediacy and performance advantages of the best double-clutch units favoured by u

Pero tengan paciencia con nosotros, porque Ford ha estado ocupado trabajando en el lavado de cara de su Mustang de sexta generación.

Condujimos por primera vez el V8 GT renovado el año pasado, pero tuvimos que esperar hasta ahora para probar uno de los coches con especificaciones europeas.

Curiosamente, la potencia del EcoBoost de 2,3 litros y 4 cilindros ha disminuido para reducir las emisiones y mejorar la economía. Pero a pesar de que la potencia máxima ha bajado de 313 a 286 CV, es capaz de acelerar de 0 a 100 km/h en 5,7 segundos (un diez por ciento más rápido) y alcanzar los 233 km/h a pleno rendimiento.

Mayor importancia tiene la nueva caja de cambios automática de 10 velocidades.

Después de haberla probado en el V8, llegamos a la conclusión de que si bien es una mejora con respecto al auto de seis velocidades que reemplaza, todavía no ofrece las ventajas de inmediatez y rendimiento de las mejores unidades de doble embrague escogidas por Porsche, BMW y el Grupo VW. Es el sonido lo que te golpea primero.

O más bien la falta de él, lo que te hace erizar el pelo de los oídos. Hay una suave vibración del motor EcoBoost al arrancar, pero para un coche con la superficie del capó de un Mustang, la silenciosa melodía no causa la primera impresión más impactante. the likes of Porsche, BMW and the VW Group.

It’s the sound that hits you first. Or rather the lack of any noise ruffling your ear hair.

There’s a gentle rasp from the EcoBoost engine on start up, but for a car with the bonnet acreage of a Mustang, the mute soundtrack doesn’t make the strongest first impression. Switch between the driving modes – Normal, Sport, Track and Snow/Wet are now joined by Drag mode and My Mode, the latter allowing you to configure engine, exhaust sound and, if fitted, the optional adaptive dampers.

Noise aside, the new drivetrain is a marked improvement over its predecessor. The ratios in the 10-speed unit are tightly stacked and remarkably close (the EcoBoost and V8 share the same set-up) and once you get your head around being in seventh gear at less than 40mph, it’s as effortless as you want it to be. Crucially, when you up the pace, there are few objections from the powertrain.

Upshifts are quick enough when left in D, but knock the selector back to Sport or use the paddles on the steering wheel, and you can neatly match your upshifts to the engine’s output. n 58 OCIO magazine

As much as we all love the original muscle car model with it’s loudness and less than eco-friendly emissions, times change and the Ford Mustang must change too if it is to stay in the game.

All in all it’s a neat machine once you get used to the fact that this is a modern Mustang and should not be compared to prervious models. Las marchas ascendentes son lo suficientemente rápidas cuando se dejan en D, pero si vuelves a poner el selector en Sport o utilizas las palas del volante, podrás ajustar perfectamente las marchas ascendentes a la potencia del motor.

En definitiva, es una máquina impecable, una vez que te acostumbras al hecho de que se trata de un Mustang moderno y que no debe compararse con los modelos anteriores. Por mucho que nos guste a todos el modelo original muscle car, con su volumen y sus emisiones menos respetuosas con el medio ambiente, los tiempos cambian y el Ford Mustang también debe cambiar si quiere seguir en el juego. n

Which means that beer belly is going nowhere. Instead, aim for around 2,000 calories a day, with every meal based around fresh lean protein.

What your summer body does with what you put into it is dictated by hormones.

Insulin, which spikes when you eat carbs, is particularly bad, turning food into fat, especially if you have a particularly sugary diet. Besides cutting out processed food and booze, it’s only four weeks remember, you need to time when you eat in order to optimise how your body handles what you put in. Un físico que querrás lucir en Instagram – ah, ah. Dicen que un cuerpo de verano se construye en invierno. Pero pisar la arena parecía estar muy lejos cuando los empanadillas de carne estaban en la mesa. Ahora el verano se acerca y esas porciones extra de crema de brandy todavía cuelgan de tu cintura.

Sin embargo, no todo está perdido.

Sigue estas reglas, y después de cuatro semanas de sudor, disciplina y manos encallecidas, te habrás quemado los pectorales y te encontrarás con un cuerpo de verano que te demostrará que sabes exactamente en qué dirección está la playa.

La regla número uno es que no te

mueras de hambre. Es el error número uno que todos los hombres cometen cuando quieren perder peso. Una dieta de choque no estrechará tu barriga flácida.

Si restringes demasiado las calorías, tu cuerpo entra en shock. Eso significa que cualquier cosa que comas, se aferra a ella. Reduzca las calorías a 1,000 al día y ese cuerpo veraniego que está buscando pensará que se está muriendo de hambre, así que almacenará la comida en lugar de quemarla como combustible. You need to earn your carbs, which means that on gym days, pair your chicken with a side of sweet potato or brown rice…not a bag of Haribo.

Because you can’t live in the gym, the best way to burn fat is to increase your basal metabolic rate, the amount of energy your summer body needs simply to function.

Muscle is active, which means it burns calories even when you’re not moving.

Ergo the more you have, the better your body is at burning fat. Even when you’re sat at your desk. Instead of cardio, switch to a total body weights session twice a week, which builds beach ready definition and strips away fat. But that doesn’t mean a quick bicep blast. can move, the more muscle fibres you recruit and the more energy you burn. That means moves like deadlifts, rows and pullups, which exponentially increase your calorie count by hitting your body’s biggest muscle groups. And yes, by all means, pump your guns too just for fun.

Now, the summer body workout regime should be split between heavy metal and high intensity. You are going to need some professional guidance to help you set up your workouts but, do insist on a programme that lets you perform a weights workout twice a week, with at least two days between each session, and the same for a circuit workout. For both workouts, bear in mind that the harder you work, the better the results. Remember, you’re training against the clock here.

Put simply, getting beach ready in just a month is going to hurt. But a month of hell buys a beach ready body that, if looked after, can last all summer long. n

Eat More Fish We all know that eating fish is good for us but how much should we be eating and is there a difference in the fish we should or shouldn’t be eating. We asked nutrition expert Clare Dawes for some help and advice.

L

iving in the south of Spain we have an abundance of fresh fish and seafood at our fingertips, but do we really make the most of it. Fish and seafood in general has incredible health benefits to us and simply put, we should be eating more. I spoke with Clare Dawes a health nutrition consultant that travels the world giving seminars for the World Health Organisation. Clare says “as we already know, fish is a great source of protein, vitamin D, and essential fatty acids (particularly found in the oilier fish).

That said, there are plenty of other good sources of protein, too. So is fish better for you than other proteins?

“There’s really no black and white answer

to this question,” says Clare. “Just like all other foods, it’s good to get a wide variety of each food group. For example, other animal proteins may be higher in other nutrients that are also beneficial.”

Clare uses iron, an essential mineral that supports red blood cell production, as an example. “A 3-ounce portion of wild salmon, for example, would have far less iron than the same amount of lean beef. And, other proteins may be lower in less-than-desired components of certain fish, like mercury,” she adds. “It’s always good to get a wide variety of protein sources, including vegetarian options.” u

iviendo en el sur de España tenemos una gran abundancia de pescado y marisco fresco al alcance de la mano, pero ¿realmente lo aprovechamos al máximo? El pescado y los mariscos en general tienen increíbles beneficios para la salud y, en pocas palabras, deberíamos comer más. Hablé con Clare Dawes, una consultora de nutrición y salud que viaja por el mundo dando seminarios para la Organización Mundial de la Salud. Clare dice “como ya sabemos, el pescado es una gran fuente de proteínas, vitamina D y ácidos grasos esenciales (particularmente en los

pescados más grasos). La proteína puede ayudar a construir y reparar el músculo, y estamos viendo más y más beneficios para la salud de la vitamina D. Uno que ya conocemos es la salud de los huesos”, dice Clare. También se refirió al contenido de ácidos grasos omega 3 del pescado para apoyar la salud cerebral.

Dicho esto, también hay muchas otras buenas fuentes de proteínas. Entonces, ¿es el pescado mejor que otras proteínas?

“Realmente no hay una respuesta blanco sobre negro a esta pregunta”, dice Clare.

“Al igual que con el resto de alimentos, es bueno obtener una amplia variedad de

Fish is often included on heart healthy menus, but how does fish support heart health?

“Omega 3 fatty acids in fish are the biggest contributing benefit to heart health,” says Clare. “Evidence shows omega 3 fatty acids, such as those found in fish, support heart health. There are three types of omega 3’s and two are found in fish. It’s also worth noting that fish is a large component of the Mediterranean diet, and research shows that this type of diet comes out on top time and time again due to its health benefits and those benefits include heart health.

We hear a lot about Omega 3 fatty acids but which fish are high in this aspect?

“Well, we already know that we should consume omega 3’s and I am often asked 74 OCIO magazine

which fish are high in omega-3 fatty acids.

First the bad news, the kind of fish that offers the most Omega 3’s is not the fried prawns or the fish covered in batter that accompanies your chips on a Friday night, it’s the fattier ones like salmon, sardines, tuna, mackerel and trout, these are the ones that are higher in omega 3’s” says Clare.

But, she adds, “that doesn’t mean you should only choose fish and seafood based on omega 3 content. It’s a good idea to switch it up depending on your fish and seafood consumption goals. Some white fish that is lower in omega 3’s can be a good protein source that is lower in fat and calories.”

So in summary then, fish in prettty much any form is going to do us good?

Research shows that the Mediterranean diet comes out on top time and time again due to its health benefits...including heart health.

“Exactly, yes. As we have discussed, fish has plenty of health benefits and it is a very good source of protein and omega 3 fatty acids. You should be eating fish and seafood at least three times a week (unless you’re a vegetarian, of course), so if you’re not reaching that goal, consider swapping one of your regular meat dishes for fish or seafood, it is a swap your body will certainly thank you for”. n

Pero añade, “eso no significa que sólo se deba elegir pescado y marisco basado en el contenido de omega 3”. Es buena idea cambiarlo dependiendo de las necesidades de consumo de pescado y

marisco. Algunos pescados blancos que son más bajos en omega 3 pueden ser una buena fuente de proteínas con menos grasa y calorías”.

Así que, en resumen, el pescado de cualquier forma nos va a hacer bien....

“Exactamente, sí. Como ya hemos comentado, el pescado tiene muchos beneficios para la salud y es una muy buena fuente de proteínas y ácidos grasos omega 3. Deberías comer pescado y marisco al menos tres veces a la semana (a menos que seas vegetariano, por supuesto), así que si no estás cumpliendo ese objetivo, considera cambiar uno de tus platos de carne habituales por pescado o marisco; un cambio que, sin duda alguna, tu cuerpo te agradecerá “. n OCIO magazine

fter a short winter closing the fabulous La Restinga Beach Restaurant is now open for the 2020 season. Visit and enjoy a lazy lunch on the sunny terrace with beautiful beach views and if springtime presents a day or two of rain then La Restinga Beach has a delightful large interior dining salon for you to enjoy with, of course, more beautiful beach views.

The cuisine at La Restinga Beach is Mediterranean in style and is simply fantastic. Offering a selection of succulent meats, fresh seafood, spectacular salads, soups, casseroles and rice dishes which are somewhat of a house speciality and need to be tasted to be believed. Despite being a restaurant of high quality, the ambience is very relaxed and friendly, encouraging guests to call in as they pass, if only for a chilled beer, glass of wine or a cup of coffee whilst enjoying the lovely beach side setting and enviable views.

And as the summer season arrives the beach beds and beach bar will be in full flow offering beach clients their very own beach bar service with cocktails, sardines, chilled beers and soft drinks...and all without having to leave the sandy beach.

La cocina en La Restinga Beach es mediterránea y sencillamente fantástica.

Una gran selección de suculentas carnes, pescado fresco, espectaculares ensaladas, sopas y guisos, y platos de arroz que prácticamente son la especialidad de la casa y que necesitas probar para creer.

A pesar de su gran calidad, su ambiente es muy relajado y acogedor, animando a que los clientes pasen aunque solo sea para tomar una cerveza fría, una copa de vino o un café disfrutando de su genial emplazamiento en la playa y sus envidiables vistas.
