visitor’s first impression of your home will be formed long before the front door is even opened.

It goes without saying that a sweeping gravel drive and a columned doorway with beautiful plant pots will make a very different impression to a cobbled path through an unkept lawn area.

Let us have a look at what can be done to give your home that all important first impression and what estate agents like to call the kerb appeal.

For years, entrance and driveway gates were possibly the ugliest part of many houses.

Even the added technology of being able to open them from the comfort of the driving seat did nothing for them aesthetically. Why not invest instead in beautifully crafted, large wooden doors, which show off the wood’s natural grain and characteristics, or perhaps an ornate wrought iron design will suit your property more. maybe wise to remember that it falls into two categories. A static piece of furniture, (a table for example), needs to be solid and durable enough to take on the elements. However if you fancy a more flexible approach to furnishings, there are plenty of portable items on the market that aren’t green, white or made of plastic. A general rule of thumb would be, the more eclectic, the better. Small scale objects such as brightly coloured Moroccan cushions, candles, lanterns and sculptures will add life and personality and shouldn’t leave a massive dent in your pocket. Terracotta pots of all shapes and sizes will increase depth and texture. You can even add your own touch by painting them in bold splashes of colours.

And finally, for those who work from home why not consider a simple wooden cabin as a home office, perhaps with wi-fi and a coffee machine? Whatever your fancy, somewhere to escape to sometimes is just what we need. n

sn’t colour just the most wonderful thing? Doesn’t a place look that much nicer when you add a bit of colour?

Colour can also really influence your mood. And as such you can use it as a tool to influence it. We tend to pick our clothes each morning for the mood that we are in. We know it’s good for us but we often avoid it, either because we’re used to being sedentary or afraid that exercise has to be vigorous to be worth our time.

The truth is, movement is movement and the more you do, the healthier you’ll be. Even moderate activities like chores around the house, gardening and walking can make a difference. Just adding a little movement to your life can reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes, improve joint stability, improve your range of movement and help maintain flexibility as you age.

But possibly most importantly of all. excercise will reduce stress.

Look for small ways to walk more. When you get the mail, take a walk around the block or take the dog for an extra outing each day. General housework will use an amazing amount of calories as will working in the garden, raking leaves or sweeping the terrace. exclusive society, as out of the nearly 70,000 Discovery Sports that Land Rover sold last year, just 173 were finished in our car’s dazzling shade.

This comes as a bit of a surprise, because to my eyes, the orange paint really adds to the car’s kerb appeal, and picks out the Discovery’s neat lines far more successfully than the more muted colours you usually see. Equally impressive is the

Discovery’s surprising agility on the road, while the low noise levels make it an effortless long-distance cruiser. Yet it’s the feeling of security it gives you in adverse weather that’s really impressive, and not just the four-wheel-drive traction and highset driving position.

Now after 3 months in our hands, the Discovery had proven its worth in virtually all conditions, but it never ventured much further off road than a gravel car park.

Given its impressive rugged credentials, that seemed like a waste.

So I booked myself in for a half day’s offroad driving tuition at one of the brand’s nine Experience centres around the UK. I opted for a trip to Eastnor Castle u

uede el color marcar realmente la diferencia en la experiencia de propiedad de un coche? Si eres dueño de un Land Rover Discovery Sport, la respuesta es un rotundo sí.

El brillante y alegre acabado de nuestro todoterreno Phoenix Orange le da al auto una verdadera sensación de bienestar cada vez que te acercas. Incluso en el más gris de los días, este Land Rover se siente como un rayo de sol.

Sin embargo, es la reacción que genera en otros automovilistas a los que realmente levanta el espíritu, especialmente los conductores de otros Phoenix Orange Discovery Sports. Si

ves uno que viene en la otra dirección, puedes estar seguro de que habrá un destello de luces, una cierta agitación salvaje y una gran sonrisa. Es sin duda una sociedad exclusiva, ya que de los casi 70.000 Discovery Sports que Land Rover vendió el año pasado, solo 173 tenían el deslumbrante acabado del nuestro.

Esto es poco sorprendente, porque según mi punto de vista, el naranja es quién en realidad le da el atractivo exterior y resalta las líneas limpias del Discovery, con mucho más éxito que el resto de colores, más apagados. También es sorprendente la impresionante agilidad del Discovery en la carretera,

mientras que sus bajos niveles de ruido lo convierten en un automóvil para recorrer largas distancias sin esfuerzo.

Sin embargo, es la sensación de seguridad que da en momentos difíciles lo que realmente impresiona, y no solo la tracción a las cuatro ruedas ni la posición elevada del conductor.

Ahora, tras 3 meses en nuestras manos, el Discovery ha demostrado su valía en prácticamente todas las condiciones, aunque nunca se alejó mucho de la carretera más que a un estacionamiento de grava. Dadas sus robustas e impresionantes credenciales, eso parecía un desperdicio, así que me reservé media jornada para conducir fuera de la carretera en uno de los nueve centros de prueba de la marca en todo el Reino Unido. Opté por un viaje a Eastnor Castle en Herefordshire, que tiene cientos de kilómetros de pistas en una finca de 5.000 acres.

Antes de salir, fui guiado a través del sistema Terrain Response del coche, con sus ajustes de control de tracción para fango, surcos, rocas y nieve. Luego, entramos en vías fangosas y encontramos nuestro primer obstáculo: un descenso viscoso, casi vertical. Decidí darme la vuelta, pero mi instructor, Simón, me instó con calma a seguir hacia adelante, u OCIO magazine

in Herefordshire, which has hundreds of miles of track set in a 5,000-acre estate.

Before setting off, I was guided through the car’s Terrain Response system, with its traction control settings for Mud, Ruts, Rocks and Snow. Then we hit the muddy tracks, and met our first obstacle: a slimy, near-vertical descent. I voted for turning around, but my instructor Simon calmly urged me to edge forward while setting the hill descent control speed. Amazingly, the Discovery clawed its way down with barely a hint of a slide. And when the time came to go up a similarly steep slope, it scrabbled up effortlessly. At the end of our session I was left staggered by the Land Rover’s abilities, and surprised at how much fun you can have going slowly It also reminded me of the Discovery’s huge spread of abilities; it can switch seamlessly between MPV, estate car, executive express and rugged off-roader. I won’t miss the car’s thirst for diesel, but in all other respects it has been a talented family wagon.

As we handed back our test vehicle I couldn’t help but think the Discovery’s new owner will be getting an extraordinarily capable allrounder and I envy their purchase. Whoever they are, I can only apologise for the muddy state of the carpets! n 40 OCIO magazine

el multifunción, automóvil familiar, el ejecutivo expreso y el modo rústico. No voy a obviar la sed del coche por el gasoil, pero en todos los demás aspectos, ha sido un auto familiar formidable.

Cuando devolvimos el vehículo de prueba, no pude evitar pensar que el nuevo propietario del Discovery iba a recibir un todo terreno extraordinariamente capaz y envidio su compra. Quienquiera que seas, ¡solo puedo pedirte disculpas por el barro de las alfombras! n

nuggled in the foothills of the Sierra Almijaras is the enchanting village of Cómpeta. The village is at an altitude of 636m, 49km from Málaga and 18km from the coast.

Its location at the apex of the triangle made up of the coast between Algarrobo and Torrox Costa, with roads leading from both, provides a perfect base for touring and enjoying the great outdoors.

The roads from the costa wriggle up the mountain with Maroma (2066 m) looming in the distance providing a spectacular backdrop. Both roads to the village are good roads and en route you can stop off at Torrox village for a tapas in a typical Spanish atmosphere. In Sayalonga too there are many tapas bars and restaurants offering typical fayre of the area.

Another route, though unpaved, is the road from Frigiliana to Cómpeta passing

This takes you through some magnificent scenery but as a driving route is not for the faint hearted. To walk, though, is easy, taking about 4 hours. The aldea actually belongs to the municipality of Cómpeta but is closer to Frigiliana.

n las faldas de Sierra Almijara se encuentra el pueblo de Competa – dulce y acogedora. El pueblo está a una altitud de 636m sobre el nivel del mar, a 49km de Málaga y a 18km de la costa. Su ubicación, es la cumbre del triángulo formado por la costa entre Algarrobo y Torrox Costa, con carreteras que parten de ambos pueblos, se convierte una base perfecta para disfrutar de excursiones y aire libre.

Las carreteras desde la costa son serpenteantes, con la montaña Maroma (2.066m) asomando en la distancia, proporciona una vista espectacular de fondo. Ambas carreteras al pueblo son buena y en la ruta se puede parar en el pueblo de Torrox para tomar unas tapas en cualquiera de sus bares de típico ambiente español, lejos del bullicio de la costa. The grape press in Plaza Vendimia is where grape treading takes place during the Noche del Vino in August. This event is a “Fiesta of National Touristic Interest” and well worth a visit.

If you are visiting for the first time, please do make sure you take the time to visit some of the beautiful villages on the outskirts of Cómpeta like Canillas de Albaida and Archez for example. El pueblo ha conservado su ambiente mudéjar, con un laberinto de calles estrechas, algunas de ellas aún adoquinadas y con muchos rincones que explorar.

Si está de visita por primera vez, asegúrese de tener tiempo de visitar algunas de las hermosas villas situadas a las afueras de Cómpeta, tales como Canillas de Albaida o Archez. Canillas de Albaida en concreto, ese está volviendo un lugar cada vez más conocido para realizar senderismo. Sus rutas han sido establecidas en antiguos caminos de mulas en desuso que han existido durante siglos. El hecho de estar en el mismo borde del parque nacional de Las Sierras, hacen de la ciudad un lugar ideal para esta actividad.

e have all seen Spain from the air as we fly into Malaga but how many of us have seen it from a light aircraft with just 4 seats?

We recently met up with Ignacio Gil, the flight instructor at ‘Real Aeroclub de Málaga en Aéroclub de la Axarquia’, for a 1 hour flight experience. The trip was to coincide with our son Harrison’s 18th birthday, so we kept it a surprise from him until the very last minute. The look on his face as we arrived at the airfield and the planned mornings activity became apparent to him, was just fantastic.

Ignacio took the time to show us around our plane for the morning, a 4 seater Piper Warrior III, just one of the planes at his disposal at the aeroclub. He explained to us in very simple terms exactly how the plane flies and how it is controlled in the air. He took great care to make sure that Harrison 52 OCIO magazine

fully understood, which as it was his birthday, we thought was very considerate… little did we know what was to come! After the usual safety/security checks and obligatory photo session, we took our seats with Ignacio and Harrison seated in the front with us immediately behind in the rear seats. After a further, short explanation, Harrison was charged with taxiing the plane to the runway for take off. Then the big surprise came, and not just for Harrison.

Ignacio announced that Harrison was to pilot the plane as we take off. Of course we were in a dual controlled plane so Ignacio would always be able to take control should it become necessary. With no time for the rear seated passengers to question the decision, we were rolling along at speed and under Ignacio’s instruction, Harrison took the plane to the air, we were up, up and away…WOW!

I cannot put into words how exhilarating the flight was, and how safe it was, even though Harrison was flying a plane for the first time in his life. Ignacio was monitoring and teaching Harrison the whole time, whilst making sure the flight was also fun for him too - how coud it not be! The landing was the only time Ignacio took charge of the controls during the whole flight, explaining that the landing required a little more experience than Harrison had at the moment.

Safely back on hard ground the smile on Harrison’s face was still evident as we said our goodbyes to Ignacio, vowing that we would return for more in the future.

Ignacio was a perfect host, instructor and gentleman, creating an unforgettable experience not only for Harrison, but for us as well. We cannot wait to return and repeat the experience.

INFORMATION: The Real Aeroclub de Malaga does not operate commercial flights. It operates as a flying club for pleasure flights, flying lessons and of course the flying experience as we enjoyed. odos hemos visto España desde el aire mientras volábamos por encima de Málaga, pero ¿cuántos de nosotros la hemos visto desde un avión ligero con tan sólo 4 asientos?

Recientemente nos reunimos con Ignacio Gil, el instructor de vuelo en el Real Aeroclub de Málaga en Aeródromo de la Axarquía, para experimentar 1 hora de vuelo. El viaje se hizo coincidiendo con el 18º cumpleaños de nuestro hijo de Harrison, por lo que mantuvimos la sorpresa hasta el último minuto. La expresión de su rostro cuando llegamos a la pista de aterrizaje, y la actividad planificada por la mañana, hizo evidente en él, que era algo simplemente fantástico.

Ignacio se tomó su tiempo para mostrarnos nuestro avión por la mañana, un Piper Warrior III de 4 plazas. Disponen de tres aviones y un biplano antiguo de 1.953 la Bücker 1.131. Él nos explicó en términos muy simples cómo vuela exactamente un avión y la forma en que se controla en el aire. Él se aseguró con sumo cuidado de que Harrison entendiera completamente, y como era su cumpleaños, nos pareció que esto fue muy considerado de su parte ... ¡poco sabíamos de lo que se nos avecinaba! Después los habituales advertencias de seguridad y sesión de fotos obligatoria, tomamos nuestros asientos, con Ignacio y Harrison sentados a los mandos, y nosotros inmediatamente detrás en los asientos traseros. Después de una breve explicación adicional, Harrison fue rodando hasta la pista de despegue. A continuación, vino la gran sorpresa, y no sólo para Harrison. Ignacio anunció que Harrison iba a probar hacer el despegue del avión. Ignacio siempre con posibilidad de tomar el mando del avión dado que dispone de doble mando continuo. Sin tiempo para los pasajeros sentados detrás a cuestionar la decisión, ya estábamos rodando a gran velocidad y bajo las instrucciones de Ignacio, Harrison llevó el avión al aires, estábamos arriba, arriba y lejos ... ¡GUAU! No puedo expresar con palabras lo estimulante que fue el vuelo, y lo seguro, a pesar de que Harrison estaba haciendo volar un avión por primera vez en su vida. Ignacio estaba monitoreando y enseñando a Harrison todo el tiempo, además de asegurarse de que el vuelo era al mismo tiempo muy divertido para él - ¡Cómo no podía serlo! En el aterrizaje fue la única vez en la que Ignacio se hizo

cargo de los mandos durante todo el vuelo, y explicó que el aterrizaje requiere un poco más de experiencia de la que Harrison tenía hasta este momento. De vuelta a tierra firme permanecía aún una sonrisa en la cara Harrison que perduraba cuando nos despedimos de Ignacio, prometiendo que volveríamos en el futuro. Ignacio fué un anfitrión, instructor y caballero perfecto, creador de una experiencia inolvidable, no sólo para Harrison, sino para nosotros también. No podemos esperar para poder volver y repetir la experiencia.

pain is the world’s largest exporter of fresh strawberries, annually shipping approximately 285 thousand tons of this Spanish delicacy to international destinations in Europe and beyond. Additionally, it is the second largest source of this berry in the world, thanks in no small part to the innovation and dedication of strawberry producers in Andalusia, the region that is responsible for 90% of all Spanish strawberries.

The market success of Spanish strawberries is unparalleled. Not only is Spain the second largest producer of this fruit, but it has also dominated international markets as the world’s leading strawberry exporter for more than five years.

In terms of export destinations, figures show that the most significant markets by far are European, with Germany and France accounting for the lion’s share of around 90 thousand tons and 74 thousand tons, respectively. the United Kingdom, Portugal, Belgium and Holland. At the same time, new markets are slowly opening for Spanish strawberries in Asia, but they still represent only a very small portion of total export sales.

Around 7,000 hectares of fields in Andalusia are dedicated to strawberry production. The province of Huelva is the source of at least 85% of all Spanish strawberries.

Through a steadfast dedication to research and development, the large output in Huelva has been developed through the process of intense cultivation, which makes it possible for farmers to harvest several crops a year.

Though there is an early strawberry season that starts in November, the bulk of Spanish strawberry production in Huelva takes place from January or February through to July.

With over 1000 strawberry varieties worldwide, nearly ninety-eight percent of the strawberries produced in Huelva come
