hether yours is a tiny patio, narrow sundeck, or apartment balcony, the right design will put an outdoor sanctuary within reach. To upgrade your patio, follow these simple tips. Extend Your Indoor Style: Leave the door open and treat your patio as an extension of your home, bringing your favourite colours and textures out whenever possible. An advantage over large patios, small patios can feature bright colours without overwhelming the eye. A bold indoor-outdoor rug can be used to define the space, and details like outdoor pillows, decorative trays, and citronella candles create a seamless connection to your more spacious indoor rooms. Simplicity is Key: A simple, soothing design incorporating elements from nature is often ideal for a small patio, as overly elaborate u

To keep the look minimal, add a pair of statement chairs and a table in neutral tones and create a multiuse space for lounging and dining. Having said that it is important to keep furniture and accessories scaled down if your space is small, that doesn’t mean everything has to be tiny. Sometimes a larger, well-placed piece of furniture like an outdoor sofa may work better than several smaller pieces. Find What Fits: A dining set might be stunning, but if it’s too large and it fights with the layout of your space then it is best left without it. Consider a table that matches the shape of your patio: rectangular pieces tend to work in narrow areas, and square tables stand out in spaces that are more symmetrical. For extra seating, bring in small garden stools that can be easily tucked away. Similar to how banquette seating saves space in a small kitchen, a built-in bench is perfect for a small patio because it doesn’t require extra space for chairs around the dining table. If you don’t plan to use your patio for dining, forgo the table for a couple comfy chairs. A smaller side table can offer a convenient spot 10 OCIO magazine

to rest a beverage or a book. Learn to Love Folding Options: For a truly restricted space, folding furniture is your friend. Since it’s easily stored when not in use, it adds flexibility and function. For added comfort and style, go beyond standard pieces and seek out options with seat cushions. Design Up: When designing an outdoor space, the sky is the limit. For maximum style, draw the eye upwards and free up some ground space with hanging or wall planters. Add a hanging chair or hammock, and drape string lights overhead. Don’t be afraid

to make your patio space cosy and private. Sure the great outdoors wants to be big and spacious but if your space is more compact then emphasis that. A Day in the Life of a Malagueña T

his month I have decided to take you through a ‘Day in the Life of Hanni Martini’. That is to say, the ‘everyday’ comings and goings of a Malaga City dweller. Morning activity: Shopping Living in a city centre, second floor apartment (without a lift), I like to shop for my staples locally and as and when I need them. I also like to make grocery shopping fun (as I do everything). For that reason, as well as using our beautiful Central Mercado Atarazanas, I choose shopping in local stores. An ‘Ultramarinos’ (or delicatessen) is the most authentic way to shop for your staples in Malaga. Just a hop, skip and jump from my home (and from central Plaza de la Constitucion and Calle Larios), nestled in the heart of Malaga’s old town, is Ultramarinos El Almacen Del Indiano. Specialising in Spanish products, the owner Mane takes pride in stocking an amazing range. From Spain’s famous Jamon Iberico to delicious Malaga wines (try my personal favourite, Botani Dry Moscatel - a delicious, floral dry white

Por la mañana: Compras Viviendo en el centro de la ciudad, en un piso en la segunda planta (sin ascensor), me gusta hacer la compra a nivel local y justo cuando las necesito. También me gusta hacerlas divertidas (como siempre hago). Por eso, además de acudir a nuestro precioso Mercado Central de Atarazanas, elijo negocios locales. Un “Ultramarinos” (o delicatesen) es el tipo de tienda más auténtico para comprar comida en Málaga. A un salto de mi casa (y de la central Plaza de la Constitución y Calle Larios), justo en el corazón del casco antiguo de Málaga, está Ultramarinos El Almacén del Indiano. Especializado en productos españoles, su propietario Mane puede estar orgulloso de su increíble variedad. zona para tomar tapas, así que puedes disfrutar de un vaso de cerveza o vino local, con una deliciosa tapa ¡mientras compras! Una verdadera experiencia malagueña. La próxima vez que estés en Málaga capital no te pierdas esta oportunidad única y auténtica. Después de la “fatigosa” tarea de las compras (con una cerveza y una tapa de queso y jamón ibérico, para hacerlo más llevadero), uno necesita un aperitivo. Cada malagueño tiene su propia “hora del Vermú” (algunos, tal vez yo incluida, ¡tienen más de una!); para mí, la mejor hora para tomarse un Vermú es después de hacer la compra ¿Y el mejor lugar de Málaga para disfrutarlo? Casa Lola. El Vermú es un vino blanco fortalecido con cítricos y especias. Cada bar tiene su propia receta pero para mí el de Casa Lola es imbatible (aunque siempre estoy dispuesta a que me demuestren lo contrario). 34 OCIO magazine

Lo siguiente: El almuerzo. El almuerzo es la comida principal del día en Málaga. Casi siempre comemos fuera en un restaurante donde el almuerzo se compone de 2 o 3 platos principales más el vino (¡seguido de una siesta!). Málaga tiene una variedad de restaurantes increíble, desde comida rústica, típicamente española e increíblemente cocinada, a cocina moderna y sofisticada, incluyendo algunos Chefs Michelin. El restaurante La Antxoeta se sitúa en un rango medio de precios pero destaca en términos de calidad e innovación en Málaga. Esta semana disfruté de un increíble menú de cuatro platos del aclamado Chef Pablo Caballero que me dejó extasiada. El Menú de Primavera de Pablo nos trae la comida del huerto al plato con un estilo nada pretencioso pero súper creativo. Disfrutamos de espárragos de temporada, tartar de calamares, atún fresco, ternera con puerros

y queso azul y chocolate (cada plato para compartir entre dos), acompañado por deliciosos vinos locales. La comida española más refinada. ¡Muy recomendable! Después del almuerzo viene… La siesta, y comienza la tarde. La tarde se compone de algunas visitas a mis clientes – todos negocios familiares con propietarios locales a los que me encanta pasar a saludar – y después un paseo para bajar el almuerzo. El Paseo del Parque de Málaga es el lugar perfecto para estirar las piernas y disfrutar de las preciosas flores de Junio, además de refrescarse a la sombra. A unos pasos del Museo Central de Málaga, encontrarás todo un mundo de paz y tranquilidad. Málaga: ¡La ciudad del mundo en la que más sencillo es alcanzar tus 10.000 pasos diarios! Noche: Si habéis estado siguiendo mi columna durante algún tiempo, ya habréis notado una temática… Lo adivinasteis, ¡todo (o casi) gira alrededor de la comida! Realmente, muchas noches me quedo en casa y disfruto de los deliciosos quesos y carnes de El Almacén del Indiano… Pero supongamos que un miércoles (porque quién quiere quedarse en casa un miércoles), a literalmente 50 pasos de mi puerta en lo que básicamente es un hueco en el muro, se esconde un bar que sirve los tacos y margaritas más deliciosos… Pancho y sus dos hijos dirigen el Tepito. Si te gusta la comida mejicana auténtica, con un toque verdaderamente personal, dirigíos a la Plaza de los Mártires. Después de un refrescante guacamole o dos – acompañado de un margarita y una charla con mis vecinos – vuelvo a casa para dormir, y volver a repetirlo mañana. Nuevas aperturas: El pasado mes disfrutamos la apertura de un bar de cócteles de lujo. Speakeasy “The Pharmacy” abrió sus puertas en Málaga, ofreciendo un extenso menú y “recetas de bebidas” para todos los gustos. Actualidad Festival de Patios de Málaga – Aunque quizá no al nivel de Córdoba, el Festival de Patios de Málaga nos da la oportunidad de explorar algunos de los barrios menos conocidos de Málaga. Además, en la semana de inauguración del festival se celebrarán actuaciones especiales de flamenco en el Corralón de Santa Sofía en C/ Montes de Oca. n

New Openings: Last month saw the opening of a luxury cocktail bar. Speakeasy ‘The Pharmacy’ opened its doors in Malaga, offering an extensive ‘liquid prescription’ menu for all tastes. What’s On Malaga Patio Festival – Whilst not quite in Cordoba’s league, the Malaga Patio Festival gives an opportunity to explore some of Malaga’s lesser-known boroughs. In addition, special flamenco shows will be held on the opening weekend of the festival, at the Corralon de Santa Sofia on C/Montes de Oca. n El Almacén del Indiano

We recommend: enjoy it? Casa Lola. Vermouth is a white wine fortified with citrus fruits and spices. Every bar has its own recipe for Vermouth but for me, the one at Casa Lola is unbeatable (although I am always up for being proven wrong). Next: Lunch. Lunch is the main meal of the day in Malaga. Most days we eat out in a restaurant and lunch will comprise of 2-3 courses plus wine (followed by a siesta!). Malaga has the most incredible choice of restaurants from rustic, typical Spanish food done amazingly well, to modern cooking and fine dining, including Michelin starred Chefs. Restaurante La Antxoeta sits mid-range in the price stakes but way up there in terms of quality and innovation in Malaga. This week I enjoyed an amazing four course menu from acclaimed Chef Pablo Caballero which blew my mind. Pablo’s Spring menu takes food from the garden to the plate in an unpretentious yet supercreative and delicious way. We enjoyed seasonal asparagus, tartar of calamari, fresh tuna, beef with leeks and blue cheese and chocolate 5 ways (each dish

to share between two), accompanied by delicious local wines. Spanish food, refined. Highly recommended! After lunch comes….. Siesta, and then the afternoon begins. Afternoon looks like a few visits to see my clients - all local, family-run business owners who I love to stop by and say hi to, and then a stroll to walk off lunch. Malaga’s Parque del Paseo is the perfect place to stretch the legs and enjoy the beautiful June blooms, as well as get some shade from the sun. A few steps from Malaga’s Central Museum will take you to a world of peace and tranquility. Malaga: The easiest city in the world in which to achieve your 10k a day step count! Evening: Many evenings, I actually stay home and enjoy the delicious cheeses and meats that I have picked up at El Almacen Del Indiano… But let’s suppose it’s a Wednesday (because who wants to stay home on a Wednesday), iterally 50 steps from my front door in what is essentially a hole in the wall, lies a bar which serves the most delicious tacos &

The Cirque Du Soleil Company returns to Malaga once again on the 1st June until the 1st July with a new show full of fantasy, colour and spectacular scenery...featuring the skeleton of a giant turtle shell.

T

otem, like all the Cirque du Soleil shows, has a common thread, a story that guides the production through the imagination and stimulates the senses and emotions. In this show we see a fascinating journey through human evolution. The central axis of the stage is the skeleton shell of a giant turtle, which serves as the integrator of this trip that begins in the amphibious origin and continues right up to the adventure of flying. Totem explores the process of evolution, the constant search for balance and the curiosity that pushes man to go further, faster and higher. The show includes 46 artists, acrobats, actors, musicians and singers, who come from 16 countries around the world. They are accompanied by 70 technicians who ensure that everything is ready on stage and off. Totem is another spectacular show from the Cirque Du Soleil Company which, having premiered globally in Montreal in April 2010, has been represented more than 2,500 times in 35 cities around the world. n the 19th and 20th of May, the Kempinski Hotel Bahia hosted the “Sport of Kings” on the Playa Padron, in Estepona. During two days of glamour and exciting polo matches, international teams competed for the first ‘Estepona Beach Polo Cup’. Entrance was free and the crowds certainly showed up in force to cheer on the players and their horses. Music was played from the loudspeakers as the match commentary kept the spectators informed and entertained. The public bar served chilled drinks and snacks and the impressive V.I.P marquee and terrace was host to players families and friends as well as the members and invited guests of the polo clubs. The tournament was supported by the Estepona Town Hall and was powered by Isabel de Borbon and her polo events company Polo4Ever. The tournament was won by the Kempinski Hotel Polo Team in a gripping and exciting final that saw several goals and some truly top class beach polo. urante el 19 y 20 de Mayo, el Kempinski Hotel Bahia acogió al “Deporte de Reyes” en la Playa del Padrón, Estepona. Durante dos días de glamur y emocionantes partidos de Polo, equipos internacionales compitieron por la primera “Estepona Beach Polo Cup”. La entrada fue gratuita y multitud de gente acudió para animar a los jugadores y sus caballos. La música no dejó de sonar al tiempo que el comentarista de los partidos mantenía a los espectadores informados y entretenidos. El bar abierto al público sirvió bebidas y aperitivos y

la impresionante carpa VIP y su terraza fueron los anfitriones para las familias de los jugadores y sus amigos, y para los miembros e invitados de los clubs de polo. El torneo fue apoyado por el Ayuntamiento de Estepona y patrocinado por Isabel de Borbón y su compañía de eventos Polo4Ever. El ganador del torneo fue el Equipo de Polo del Kempinski Hotel en una fascinante final en la que se contemplaron numerosos goles y verdadero polo de playa de alto nivel. El evento fue un gran éxito y nos proporcionó una oportunidad maravillosa para disfrutar de ese increíble deporte en primera persona. Muy pronto disfrutaremos de más eventos de polo en las playas de la Costa del Sol. n

rom the way a young child stares in open-jaw awe at the roof folding itself down, to the unmatchable thrill of driving with the sun warming your skin and the wind wafting your hair, there’s something quite magical about convertibles. It could be argued, and anyone who rides a motorcycle will agree, that we’ve been insulating ourselves from the real experience of driving, ever since we started putting roofs on the early horseless carriages, back in the 1920s. Convertibles, then, are the last bastion of proper driving, you might say, and to own one is to experience a particular kind of joy that other drivers are missing out on. Unless, of course, the weather turns bad. The very first time you drive a convertible, on a sunny day, it all makes sense. Your headroom is as infinite as your happiness as you zip around feeling like a film star. It’s a fantastic buzz to be in your car

esde la forma en que un niño pequeño mira asombrado, con la mandíbula abierta, plegarse el techo, hasta la emoción inigualable de conducir con el sol calentando tu piel y el viento soplando tu pelo, hay algo bastante mágico en los descapotables. Se podría argumentar, y cualquiera que conduzca una moto estará de acuerdo, que nos hemos aislado de la experiencia real de conducir desde que en los años 20 empezamos a poner techos a los primeros carruajes sin caballos. Por eso podría decirse que los descapotables son el último bastión de la conducción auténtica, y poseer uno es experimentar un tipo especial de alegría que otros conductores se están perdiendo. A menos, por supuesto, que el tiempo se estropee. La primera vez que conduces un descapotable en un día soleado, todo cobra sentido. La altura de tu cabeza es tan infinita como tu felicidad, mientras te mueves por ahí sintiéndote una estrella de cine. Es una sensación fantástica estar en el coche y en el mundo al mismo tiempo. and out in the world at the same time.There’s something about the sensation of speed you get in a rag-top, too, which you could partly attribute to “wind rush”. It’s a bit like a flashback to riding your bicycle, or a skateboard, fast down a hill. It’s the kind of childish, smiley fun that makes a comparison between the convertible version of any car and its roofed relative difficult, because it goes beyond mere logic. Taking your top down, even in highly marginal weather, becomes a compulsive habit for owners, which is why even cold places like Scotland and England have a lot of drop-top drivers. Even just the tiniest sniff of the chance of a nice day out, roof down, is enough to lure them. There are a couple of downsides though, sunburn being the most obvious.You have to really worry about your taste in music too as there are no secrets in a top down car and, don’t even think about singing in the car when you drive a convertible. From a technical perspective, because the roof is a separate piece that attaches via locks and latches, squeaks and rattles can emerge in the long term but, many drivers will say that this is no more than a minor inconvenience. Convertibles may not be the most practical choice, and if you’re serious about your driving you’d probably look elsewhere, but then not all car purchases are made for practical purposes. Bajar la capota, incluso en climas muy poco propicios, se convierte en una adicción irresistible para los propietarios, por lo que incluso en lugares fríos como Escocia e Inglaterra hay muchos conductores que se dejan llevar. Sin embargo, hay un par de desventajas, además de las obvias quemaduras solares: tienes que preocuparte por tu gusto musical, ya que no hay secretos en un descapotable y ni se te ocurra cantar en él. También, desde un punto de vista técnico, debido a que el techo es una pieza separada fijada a través de mecanismos de cierre, los chirridos y ruidos pueden aparecer a largo plazo, aunque muchos conductores dirán que esto es un inconveniente menor. Los convertibles pueden no ser la opción más práctica, y si usted es un conductor serio, probablemente buscará otra cosa, pero no todas las compras de coches se hacen con fines prácticos. Si lo fueran, los Ferrari no existirían. n

ake Viñuela is named after the small Andalucian white village of Viñuela close to the point where the rivers Velez, Guaro and Seco were dammed to create this spectacular lake/ reservoir. Interestingly, prior to the construction of the dam, the area was found to contain many treasures from Roman times. These were painstakingly excavated and some of the more rare items can be viewed in the Museum at Malaga. It is possible to drive almost the entire circumference of the Lake and enjoy the stunning views. As you circumnavigate the lake you will pass a number of delightful villages including Puente Don Manuel, Canillas de Aceituno, Alcaucin, Periana

and Riogordo. Close by, the villages of Comares, Competa and Benamargosa are charming and should also not be missed if you are exploring the area. The lake is only15 minutes inland from the Coastal town of Torre del Mar. There is a good supply of accommodation nestling in the hills overlooking the lake and in the various towns and villages close by. Whilst the area maintains a high degree of the real Spain it has also taken on something of an international flavour with a large expatriate community. Fundraising event at the new Matices Recaudación de fondos en la nueva sede de Matices, en Torre del Mar The new Matices venue in Torre del Mar hosted a Partying & Painting fundraising event in collaboration with Joanna & Tim Ellis. Tim is running in the 84km Ultramarathon across Bali, for Classroom Of Hope, that will put 100 Balinese children through 6 years of primary school. The event was sponsored by Arte y Copas & Matices Cultural Association. The event was an easy way for guests to have fun and be creative while socialising and having a few drinks with friends. La nueva sede de Matices en Torre del Mar acogió un evento de recaudación de fondos de Partying & Painting en colaboración con Joanna y Tim Ellis. Beach Lounge Inauguration Inauguracion del Beach Lounge Torre del Mar The inauguration party for the new Beach Lounge in Torre del Mar took place at the beginning of May with invited guests coming from far and wide to celebrate the opening of the exciting new venue. The party started at 6pm to allow guests to fully enjoy the large sun kissed terrace as they sipped chilled beers, local and international wines and cava and as the sun slowly set over the horizon, the beers and wines gave way to creative cocktails and gin tonics. The professional jamon carver took centre stage at the buffet table as guests enjoyed local dishes and of course plates of the delicious finely cut jamon. The afternoon and evening was a fantastic success and firmly places The Beach Lounge on the Torre del Mar map. A principios de mayo, personas de todo el mundo acudieron como invitados a celebrar La fiesta de inauguración del nuevo y excitante Beach Lounge en Torre del Mar. La fiesta comenzó a las 6 de la tarde, para permitir a los invitados disfrutar plenamente de la amplia terraza besada por el sol mientras tomaban cervezas frías, vinos locales e internacionales y cava; y mientras el sol se ponía lentamente en el horizonte, las cervezas y los vinos dieron paso a creativos cócteles y gin tonics. También disfrutaron de los platos locales, pero el protagonista fue un cortador de jamón profesional que hizo las delicias de los invitados cortando muy fino un exquisito jamón. Costa Women Axarquía Cocktails and Canapés at the Beach Lounge, Torre del Mar The Costa Women Axarquia spent a wonderful afternoon enjoying cocktails & canapés at the newly opened venue of the ‘Beach Lounge’ in Torre del Mar, for their May event. More than 25 ladies were welcomed into this stylish location with glasses of pink fizz as they mingled and made chit chat with friends old and new. This new lounge bar is the perfect meeting place for business or pleasure, with soft chill out furniture to relax & unwind. Costa Women Axarquia (CWA) hold monthly events throughout the year and is part of ‘Costa Women Spain’.
