rom city balconies to country lawns, rooftop gardens to modest courtyards, there’s a burning desire in most of us to create an outdoor room of our own in order to dine ‘alfresco’ with family and friends. But what does ‘alfresco’ really mean? Well the term is generic for dining outside in the fresh air but it is so much more than that. Think big appetite, great weather, a lovely atmosphere and most of all appreciating a slower pace of life! Dining alfresco doesn’t mean pulling
up a chair and simply taking your plate outside to the garden, there is a whole other dimension when it comes to mastering the art of dining alfresco. The term is popular all around the world with each country and culture taking on their own understanding of alfresco dining. Simple Yet Beautiful: An outdoor meal is anything but prim and proper! This rustic style alfresco setup proves that not every meal has to be a fancy affair. Throw a tablecloth over your stone patio furniture and pile up a big bowl of organic fruits from your garden. Enjoy a simple, healthy snack and treat yourself to some Spanish wine! Sea front Lunch: Remember to dress your table for the occasion! Roll out a
table cloth with pretty summer prints and artfully tailor your dining table with a nice centrepiece. A big bowl or basket full of your favourite fruits and some sprigs from the garden is a simple way to decorate your outdoor setting. Simple Yet Sweet: Dining alfresco can be a great way to enjoy eating outdoors and soaking up the sunshine. Enjoying a nice meal outside doesn’t need to be complicated. Place a small round table in an intimate corner of your patio and pull up a few wrought iron garden chairs. If you have a not so great table just cover it with a tablecloth. Including a nice garden fountain is also a plus because it’s great for relaxing and brings

an enchanted and magical ambience. I am sure you have gathered by now that there are so many styles and ideas when it comes to alfresco dining. When you think about creating your own space, think as you would if you were decorating your living room. Soften hard surfaces with throws and cushions, add form and interest with sculpture and planters and introduce colour with dining accessories such as drinks buckets, serving bowls and glassware. Keep everything relaxed, though, and remember that it is not necessary to spend a small fortune in order to create an outdoor space that is simply perfect for outdoor entertaining. n

espite strong competition, the town of Nerja remains one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Costa del Sol. Once a sleepy fishing village, Nerja is one of the few places to have kept its traditional charm, with whitewashed houses and narrow streets but with all the modern amenities you could wish for. Geographically speaking, Nerja sits at the mouth of the Chillar River, and is wedged in between the Mediterranean Sea and the mountains of the Sierras de Tejeda. The name “Nerja” is derived from the word “narixa”, an Arabic term which translates to “bountiful spring.” The abundance of water in this area gives Nerja a tropical feel, a lushness that contributed to its significance in the sugar cane industry in the early 20th century. Undoubtedly, the most popular tourist attraction is the Nerja caves which were discovered in 1959, when a handful of boys from Maro found it by chance. They had

The caves are roughly five kilometres in length and have several sections open to the public, visiting them makes a fascinating day out for the whole family. High on everyone’s wish list when visiting Nerja is a visit to one of the many beaches. Nerja boasts some of the best beaches on the Costa del Sol. From the long expanses of sandy beach found on Burriana and El Playazo, to the hidden cove-like beaches found in the neighbouring Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo. There are twelve beaches that fall within Nerja’s provincial boundaries with several more in the immediate vicinity that should be high on any visitor’s wish list.
Away from the beaches, you will want to visit the Balcón de Europa with its many bars, restaurants, shops and nightlife. It is Nerja’s most famous landmark and the focal point for most of the town’s activities. A walk along the Balcón de Europa offers spectacular panoramic views of the whole coast. The best to be had in Nerja. One great way to spend some time during your holidays in Nerja is to go shopping. Nerja doesn’t have any large shopping centres, instead, the shops are mostly privately owned and generally run by local residents of the town, offering everything from arts, crafts and souvenirs to international fashion and genuine retail therapy for just about everyone. Nerja offers so much to its visitors that it is easy to see why people come from far and wide to enjoy the hospitality. If you have not yet experienced Nerja, I encourage you to do so this summer, you will not be disappointed! n

El biquini, de origen brasileño, siempre ha sido un básico del verano, aunque el tipo tanga desapareció de las playas de San Tropez, Marbella, Mónaco o el Caribe durante muchos años, hasta ahora. Puede que el retorno de esta prenda haga que a la mayoría de nosotras nos entre el pánico pero, antes de volver a la seguridad del pareo, te animará saber que la moda de baño aún no nos ha abandonado. Al mismo tiempo ha surgido una fabulosa nueva gama de modelos y trajes de una sola pieza. Y ambos estilismos pueden coexistir en armonía, especialmente porque hay momentos en

style can co exist in harmony simply because there are times when a skimpy thong bikini is not practical or appropriate. I have a slightly different take on the whole bikini thong/swimsuit debate. In my opinion it doesn’t matter how thin you are, how beautiful you are, and so on, if you wear ill-fitting clothes, you will not look stylish. This principle applies to fashion in general but especially to swimwear. It’s all about presenting the best possible version of your body, whatever you think your body issues are. There are lots of people who wear bikinis and probably shouldn’t, and there are lots of people who wear one-pieces because they don’t like their physiques. I’m OK with my physique, just not in a bikini. Still, needs must and in my years of lounging 26 OCIO magazine
by the pool and hitting the beach, I’ve seen thousands of different bodies in bikinis and swimsuits, and I have to say that generally speaking, no one looks truly good in them. But really, that shouldn’t matter, it’s all about how you feel, and of course the cut, shape, size and fit of your chosen beachwear. The point is whether you feel more comfortable in a glamorous thong bikini or an all in one swimsuit, you must wear it, in spite of what the pages of fashion magazines tell you. Eventually, everybody figures out that you look your best when you feel the most comfortable. And remember, whatever style you choose wear it with confidence and a smile, there really is nothing more attractive than a confident woman wearing a smile...regardless of the swimwear. n

En mi opinión, no importa lo delgada que estés, o lo guapa que seas: si utilizas prendas que no te favorezcan no te verás bien. Se trata de presentar la mejor versión posible de tu cuerpo, independientemente de los defectos que creas tener. Aunque lo cierto es que esto no debería importar, ya que todo depende de cómo te sientas, y por supuesto del corte, forma, y talla del traje que elijas. Lo importante es saber si te sientes más cómoda con un biquini atrevido, o con un bañador, en cuyo caso debes vestirlo sin importar lo que digan las revistas de moda. En definitiva, todos sabemos que cuando mejor estamos es cuando nos sentimos más cómodos. he VALS Sports centre in the heart of Torre del Mar is preparing for a busy summer season with so many activities, fun and sports for all ages. As many of you already know, VALS is a very popular place to learn and play raquet sports, especially padel which, you may be interested to know, is the worlds fastest growing sport. But it is more than just a centre for padel and tennis. The fully equipped and modern gymnasium, exercise classes, large outdoor swimming pool, grass football pitches, language classes and activities and so much more, all combine to make VALS a most enjoyable centre for all your leisure and sporting desires. Each and every summer VALS operates a programme of Summer Camps and courses which are open to both members and non members alike. and friendly place to enjoy a vast choice of sports and activities. The Football Camp allows children to enjoy the centre and all it has to offer but with a strong focus on football skills and activities. The third summer camp offered is a General Activity Programme where the children get to enjoy a wide variety of games, sports and activities. Working families with children will be pleased to know that VALS offers a facility
to have your children looked after before the summer camp starts and after it finishes each day, allowing you to drop off and pick up your children pretty much at a time that suits you. As well as the summer camps there are a selection of swimming, padel and tennis intensive courses and lessons for all ages. These lessons and courses come in various packages from one day to one month. The summer camps too have various options and packages which run from one week right through to one month. Summer camps and courses start on the 24th June. Places in the summer camps are by reservation only and can be booked in reception. If you want further information but do not speak Spanish do not worry, many of the staff at VALS speak a good level of English so there is always someone on hand to help you with your enquiries. n

he new Jeep Compass is a significantly plusher vehicle than the old Compass. It is better finished, better to drive and even offers more rear legroom and a larger boot, too. Outside, the Compass retains the handsome and very distinctive mini Grand Cherokee styling of its predecessor. It’s main selling point however is not in the beauty contest but on the road...or off it to be precise. We were very keen to test the press notes we had been given on the off road capabilities of the Compass, so we left the coast and headed inland to terrain that only a 4x4 would attempt. We were impressed by what a competent 36 OCIO magazine

mud-plugger the Compass is. Armed with extra ground clearance, chinless bumpers, and Jeep’s most sophisticated all wheel drive system, the Compass easily picked its way through some quite treacherous trails. The all wheel drive system is particularly efficient when off road in the wet and mud. The system will often rely on the brakes to automatically grab any spinning wheels and send power to the opposite side of the
axle to wheels that are not slipping, and it works very well. On slippery ascents, we simply applied a little extra throttle and gave the all wheel drive system time to sort itself out. On steep down grades, the hill descent control system let the Compass crawl down steep, dirt tracks with grace and composure. Point proven: This is a Jeep, and a proper one at that. Back on the tarmac road on the way home we stopped off at the Jet Wash and cleaned up our Compass to expose the shiny gloss finish of a vehicle that would now take us in style to the press meeting point of the 5 star hotel where it will no doubt stand out from the crowd in the beauty contest and photoshoot. n

l nuevo Jeep Compass es un vehículo bastante más confortable que el viejo Compass. Tiene un mejor acabado, es mejor para conducir, ofrece más espacio para las piernas en la parte trasera y el maletero también es más grande. Por fuera, el Compass conserva el hermoso y distintivo estilo de su predecesor, el mini Grand Cherokee. Su atractivo principal, sin embargo, no está en su belleza, sino en el recorrido... o fuera de él para ser precisos. Nos interesaba mucho poner a prueba las notas de prensa que nos proporcionaron respecto a las capacidades fuera de pista del Compass, por lo que dejamos la costa y fuimos tierra adentro, a un terreno en el que
solo un 4x4 se arriesgaría. Nos quedamos impresionados con lo competente que es el Compass en el fango. Provisto de una distancia al suelo adicional, un parachoques sin partes sobresalientes y el sistema de tracción a cuatro ruedas más sofisticado de Jeep, el Compass se abrió paso, fácilmente, a través de algunos senderos bastante traicioneros. El sistema motriz de todas las ruedas es particularmente eficiente en terrenos húmedos y en barro. Con frecuencia, el sistema se apoyará en los frenos de forma automática, para sujetar una rueda que patina y enviará energía al otro extremo del eje, a las ruedas que no estén salpicando; y funciona muy bien!. En ascensos
resbaladizos, simplemente aplicamos un poco de aceleración extra y le dimos el tiempo al sistema de tracción a cuatro ruedas para solucionarlo. En las pendientes pronunciadas, el sistema de control de descenso de colinas permite que la Compass se arrastre por las pendientes, con gracia y compostura. Punto comprobado: Este es un Jeep, y es adecuado para eso. De vuelta al asfalto, de camino a casa, paramos en el JetWash para lavarlo y que pudiera lucir el brillante acabado de un vehículo, que ahora nos llevará con estilo a la reunión de prensa, en un hotel de 5 estrellas donde, sin duda, destacará entre todos en el concurso de belleza y la sesión de fotos. n OCIO magazine

orre del Mar has an impressive four kilometre stretch of beach and promenade (Paseo Maritimo), which runs all the way to the neighbouring village of Caleta de Velez. Along this fabulous stretch of beach are some of the most fantastic chiringuitos, beach bars and beach clubs, most of which are open all year round. Away from the beach, the main road through Torre del Mar is Avenida de Andalucia. Here you will find the majority of the towns restaurants, bars, banks, shops and supermarkets. There are several streets linking the town centre to the beach and the Paseo de Larios is certainly one of the most popular. This beautiful tree lined pedestrianised street joins the beachside promenade to the Plaza Inglesia (church square) on Avenida de Andalucia. Along the paseo there are a fabulous selection 48 OCIO magazine
of places in which to relax, eat, drink and shop. Offering everything from retail shops and ice cream parlours to coffee bars, cocktail bars and restaurants, this certainly is a pleasant place to spend a little time enjoying life. Be sure to venture down the several avenues leading off the paseo as there are a number of fabulous places to discover and enjoy. Each evening during the summer months, there is an open air market at the beach end of the paseo to keep you entertained and, at the other end of the paseo the church square offers a delightful selection of cafés, bars and restaurants for you to enjoy, along with a useful underground car park. he art of the BBQ has been hotly disputed ever since cavemen first rubbed two sticks together. But it’s not as simple as adding meat to fire. For a flame grilled guide we asked chef Andrew Johnson of The Barbecue Pit in London for some tips and advice to make sure your barbecues this season are the best ever. Q. Andrew, let’s get straight into the first question and the most debated barbecue question in the world...charcoal or gas? A. Always charcoal for me, or wood if it’s available to you. It’s far more exciting to cook with. There’s something satisfyingly caveman like about starting a fire from scratch and cooking over it. Q. What’s the biggest mistake most people make when barbecuing? A. Cooking while there are still flames and the coals or wood haven’t cooled down enough. Contrary to popular opinion, a barbecue is not fast food. Patience is the key. Q. What is the best way to barbecue fish? A. Straight on the grill without wrapping it in anything. But it’s important to make sure the bars are clean and have had good use beforehand so that they’re well seasoned. This will help with any sticking issues. Q. And what about some vegetables, how do you barbecue those without charring? A. A light brushing of rapeseed oil will help the vegetables caramelise rather than blacken. Q. And finally, what is your favourite accompaniment to a barbecued burger? A. A simple question and a simple answer. A nice cold beer and good friends. n 58 OCIO magazine

Para hacer una guía sobre cocinar con fuego a la parrilla, le pedimos al chef Andrew Johnson, de The Barbecue Pit en Londres, algunos consejos y recomendaciones para que te asegures de que tus barbacoas sean las mejores de todas durante la temporada. P. Andrew, vamos directo a la primera pregunta, la pregunta sobre barbacoas más discutida en el mundo. ¿carbón o gas? R. Para mí, siempre carbón, o madera si se tiene a disposición. Es mucho más emocionante. Hay una cierta satisfacción para un hombre de las cavernas en eso; es como si se empezara un fuego desde cero y se cocinara sobre él. P. ¿Cuál es el error más grande que la mayoría de las personas cometen cuando asan a la parrilla?
R. Cocinar mientras todavía hay llamas y las brasas o la madera no se han enfriado lo suficiente. Contrariamente a la opinión popular, una barbacoa no es comida rápida. La paciencia es la clave. P. ¿cuál es la mejor manera de asar el pescado en la barbacoa? R. Directamente en la parrilla, sin envolverlo en nada. Pero es importante asegurarse de que las barras estén limpias y se les haya dado un buen uso anteriormente. Esto será de utilidad con cualquier problema de pegado. P. ¿Y las verduras?, ¿cómo las asas a la parrilla sin carbonizarlas? R. Una ligera pasada de brocha con aceite de colza ayudará a que las verduras se caramelicen en lugar de ennegrecerse. P. Y, finalmente, ¿cuál es su acompañamiento favorito para una hamburguesa a la barbacoa? R. Una pregunta simple y una respuesta simple. Una buena cerveza fría y buenos amigos. n
