By the fireside Y

ou don’t have to be an Eagle Scout to make a good fire in your fireplace. You just have to use a tried and trusted method. Let us assume that you’ve had your chimney inspected and cleaned so that there’s no build-up of flammable creosote to worry about and you have taken the old ashes to your compost pile and your fireplace is now clean and ready to begin. Firstly, look up your chimney to make sure the damper is open. A ‘throat 08 OCIO magazine

Words: Jacob martins

damper’ is located at the bottom of the chimney and will open with a lever. If you have a ‘top damper,’ which is located at the top of the chimney (obviously), then you will be able to open it by pulling a chain or cable.

Ensure you have already cleared the hearth of anything flammable. Now crumple 2 or 3 sheets of newspaper and put them in your fireplace grate. The fireplace grate enables your fire to pull in the air it needs to keep a good draft going up the chimney. Put a good handful of kindling strips on top of the paper. On top of the kindling, criss-cross 8 or 10 dry pieces of hardwood. These pieces need to be larger than kindling but not as big as logs. The next step is very important. Crumple u

two more sheets of newspaper and light them, holding them up inside the fireplace to warm the flue and establish an upward flow of air.

Then light the paper in your fireplace grate from each end. When the paper lights the kindling, and the kindling lights the hardwood, it’s time to add 2 or 3 logs. Place the logs toward the rear of the fireplace so it will reflect heat into the room as it burns. As the fire gets established, you can add more logs. Place your fireplace screen or spark 10 OCIO magazine

guard in front of your fire to protect your family and home from stray sparks, loose logs or even log fragments that may fall out of the fire.

With practice, you will use just enough logs so that the fire burns down to glowing embers by bedtime. It is ok to leave a fire burning out during the night but please make sure a fireplace screen is standing guard over your fireplace just in case. Remember to use just enough softwood for kindling to get the fire going.

Commercial fire starters can take the place of kindling. For logs, use dry hardwood (oak, maple, cherry, hickory or olive). The ideal firewood has dried for about one year. Don’t burn plastics or paper with colour printing, such as magazine pages or gift wrap, because they may give off toxins. And finally, no matter what, never use flammable liquids in your fireplace. A well lit fire will add a warmth and cosiness to any room. Be safe and sensible and your fire will be enjoyed by all during the winter months. n

The right stuff for

The White Stuff

W

inter pursuits, particularly the snow dependent ones, do tend to demand an awful lot of kit to keep out the cold and wet but, the bulk and weight of such equipment is getting smaller and lighter all the time. Advances in fabric technology and fashion styles mean that we can own clothes that work superbly for a number of activities and are not left in storage for eleven months of the year because they are “exclusively” skiwear. On the ski slopes I have seen people in jackets that do all the right things when worn with skis or snowboards but still look smart and comfortable around the town u

L

u

and nightspots. Because of this new styling and technology in fabrics these clothes will keep you warm, weatherproof and neatly styled for pretty much any outdoor activity you desire. There is little to beat smart, quilted or two-ply trousers made from quick drying, breathable materials beloved of walkers and campers in countries of cooler climes and adapt well to pursuits on horseback, archery, shooting, sailing and even hang-gliding. If your middle is likely to be threatened by a clothes gap it’s no problem to fix with a basic all-in-one outfit that weighs little and packs easily so you can then set about enjoying yourself. If the choice of colours and styles is huge then the add-ons or accessories, both decorative and practical, can only be described as incredible. As all winter pursuit lovers will know, it is really important to make sure the neck, wrists and the top of the head are warm and covered when temperatures drop. Women are far more skillful at accessorising than men so once the size and shape of your hat, gloves, scarf or “snood” have been identified gentlemen, leave the ladies to do the rest and, whatever you do, avoid surprising your better half with a gift of a military camouflage bandana, to complement her new pastel pink ski-jacket. Men are best left to cope with other accessories such as neat powerful little torches to clip on clothing or head bands, pouches and belt kits to hold wallets, mobile phones, cash 18 OCIO magazine

and drink flasks. And while you’re at it, a good “Sat-Nav” is a must if you are going on an adverture. Electronic mapping has come a long way in recent years so wherever you are and whatever your location, being lost need no longer be an issue. When it comes to health and safety, I always think it is best to talk to the experts who use it and know what they’re talking about. Many of the shops and hire places in the Sierra Nevada for example are run by genuine enthusiasts rather than impersonal (and frequently uninformed) high street chains or internet retailers. Sure it uses up a little of your fun time to organise yourself but a little time in good preparation can save you a lot of time later on. Be safe and enjoy the winter saeason. n

Business Breakfast Club Network meetings with a friendly and welcoming ambience

I

recently attended the English speaking ‘Business Breakfast Club’ meeting which was held at the Baviera Golf Club in Caleta de Velez. Inside the Clubhouse at Baviera Golf Club, ‘Business Breakfast Club’ hosts, Ashlyn and Raymond Watts greeted me with a warm welcome, immediately putting me at ease. There is always some apprehension at attending a business networking group. In the past, you could come across groups where visitors were mobbed by regulars, the regulars would desperately stuff marketing brochures into unsuspecting hands and give unsolicited ‘elevator pitches’ about their wonderful products or services. Worse still were the groups where it appeared that there was an obligation to immediately supply customer leads to others within the group, you had the impression that this had nothing to do with merit but was an unwritten rule of membership. Today’s Business Breakfast Club was very different, relaxed and really enjoyable. Delegates happily fuelled themselves with breakfast and lots of tea and coffee. Stories were shared of both business and 22 OCIO magazine

social topics (such as driving in the rain on a Spanish Motorway), the delights of living in Spain, beyond Sun, Sand and Sangria (e.g. coffee!) and how to damp proof an old Spanish house (i.e. you don’t!). The meeting was attended by various nationalities including Spanish, Danish, Swedish and German but all were English speaking. Some were representing larger companies but most were small businesses or self employed operators. Everyone at the meeting was given the opportunity to briefly describe their business to the rest of the group. Again, because this was done in a very friendly and relaxed manner, nobody felt uncomfortable talking about their business, myself included. Formal introductions completed, we entered into an interesting Q&A session allowing anyone to air their issues, questions or ideas. By 11.30am the meeting had come to a close and a few delegates began to depart, however, many stayed on to chat further and network with more tea and coffee. It was refreshing to see today how far Business Networking has developed and

how everyone present at this meeting was genuinely interested in learning about each others’ businesses. I met a few people with general business issues that either I or another attendee was able to help with. In turn, a number of delegates were genuinely interested in helping me develop a part of my business that I was having difficulty with. All in all, it was a very successful Monday morning. The cost of the meeting was just 10 euros (including breakfast and coffee) and all new comers are welcome to come along. I for one will be a regular attendee at the monthly meetings and I hope to see you there. n

WINTERCOATS Los Abrigos de invierno by Andrea Michaels

C

oats have always had their fashion eras, and the late noughties is one of those eras. One of my favourite eras for women’s coats though was the late 1920’s and 1930’s when coats were all the rage. As a fashion lover, you may be like me and have a small closet full of coats of varying types. Today if you are in the market for a new coat it is important to select your coat knowing its overall purpose. So begin by accepting that the coat is the first thing an onlooker sees when they cast their glance over you. It is from your outer top coat people gain perceptions about you, whatever garments you have thrown on underneath. Ask yourself if you are looking for an investment coat to last several u

Do you perceive one function as being a coat that discreetly tells those in the know the price tag, but ever so subtly. Or is it a fun fashion coat choice, outerwear merely destined to make its micro trend fashion point over just a few months. We not only have luxury cloth coats, but also luxe leather and suede, which adds a new dimension and may even give you an excuse to add a leather classic to your wardrobe. As ever, when you pay more you will be rewarded with better quality in the form of luxury feel leather skin. Suede and leather pieces can be costlier than wool, camelhair and cashmere coats, and yet often leather clothing falls into the casual wear category. If spending a lot on a suede piece, make sure it suits the lifestyle you lead. Some may prefer to regard suede items as occasion pieces. Suede marks and stains more easily than fabrics, and specialist suede cleaning can be far more expensive than regular dry cleaning. Animalistic and fur looks come around every year and this season the short chubby jacket holds force, but there are coloured fur coats too, and also capes and 26 OCIO magazine

capelets. High street versions of animal print concentrate more on faux trim pieces especially as uplifting relief on long tweed coats Cream or white coats are classy and look expensive because they need to be pristine for best effect. Once again the quality of the material is important. Cream and winter white will get you noticed, but if you want to merge with the background select a more urban friendly colour like grey. Grey can be lively and interesting when its a speckled tweed fabric as well as

cool and expensively severe in dove silver grey to deepest charcoal. The best investment coat is always one that suits your body shape. This is true whether you select an architectural origami sculptured coat, with a cleverly tailored cut, or a simple cape. It will not be difficult to find a coat that is not only an investment buy but also will have enough directional elements to take you through the winters to come. Remember, coats provide not only warmth, but a casual understated fashion look. Happy shopping! n

Body Pump started originally in New Zealand by Les Mills in 1991 and has now taken hold globally as a great class for people of all levels of fitness. Body Pump is a cardio strength class that utilises barbells to perform resistance exercises and workouts; all completed to upbeat music mix tracks. Body pump classes are run by professional trainers and usually last around 45-60 minutes. They are fun yet rigorous workouts that raise heart rate, work every area of your body and cause serious calorie burn. Your body will tone up as you gain muscle and as the fat drops off you will notice improved shape and definition around your body. Resistance training with weights is a great calorie burner and excellent way to build muscle. As muscles repair from the workouts your body’s metabolism is increased. This means that calories are burned by Body Pump at an increased rate long after you finish the Body Pump class. With increased muscle mass on your 32 OCIO magazine

body you require more energy day to day, which if you follow a calorie deficit diet will result in a greater rate of loss. Most gyms that offer excercise classes will offer a Body Pump class as a part of the membership package, or you can just go along for the class alone. Vals Sport in Torre del Mar offers a number of Body Pump classes at various times throughout the week, so there is really no reason why you shouldn’t go along and give it a try. n

t’s that time of year where it seems like everyone is talking about being healthier and losing weight. But if you’re like most people, the good intentions never seem to translate into success and at the end of each January you’re back wondering which diet to go on next. So here are a few tips for losing weight in the New Year. 1. Know what it is that you want to achieve? Most people think purely in terms of losing weight. But what’s the point losing weight and then gaining it all back a few weeks later? In other words, think about what the real goal is. It’s not just to reach a certain weight. It’s to reach it and stay there! 2. Accept that it will take longer to lose weight than you expected. Everyone is in a hurry but the fact is most people have unrealistic expectations about how fast they will lose weight. If you’re expecting to lose weight faster than you actually can (and who isn’t influenced by fad diet claims of losing massive amounts of weight in a short time?) you are likely to be disappointed and more likely to give up. Instead, the best thing you can do for yourself is accept that it will take a little longer and that’s ok. 3. Don’t do anything unpleasant. 34 OCIO magazine

January...

The Weight Loss Month Have you ever tried a diet that was so unpleasant that you couldn’t last on it for more than a week and then you blamed yourself for lack of willpower? When it comes to cutting back the calories, there is no place for “no pain, no gain”. If it’s unpleasant, you won’t keep doing it. 4. Keep a food diary. Everyone talks about writing down what you eat and with good reason. It works! If you have to choose one action to take, take this one. It’s that powerful. 5. Have a life If you usually eat out at restaurants a lot, then don’t suddenly stop. You have to be able to “have a life” while losing weight. Remember, you’re trying to create a lifestyle you can maintain for the long-term. 6. Don’t expect perfection When a child is learning to do anything

Enero… El mes para adelgazar Words: Angela Kites

(walk, talk, ride a bike) they make mistakes. And we tell them that it’s ok because it’s part of learning. But why do we expect perfection when we are trying to change our eating patterns? Slip-ups are part of the process of losing weight. Expect them and accept them. 7. Keep going no matter what You make your success inevitable if you keep making small changes, sticking with the things that work, and modifying the things that don’t work. But most of all, the key is to never give up, no matter what. n

L

3. No hagas nada desagradable.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio A

lfa Romeo’s range is slowly being revitalised, and the stylish and likeable Stelvio follows in the footsteps of the excellent Giulia. Alfa’s first SUV is expected to be its biggest seller. The Stelvio inherits perhaps the most important quality of any Alfa Romeo which is it’s unique and desirable styling. But more than good looks, there’s substance here, too, as the Stelvio is great to drive, with strong engines and superb agility. It’s certainly transferred the Giulia’s DNA over in this regard. It would seem that the Fiat Group is really starting to invest in the Alfa Romeo brand by allowing it to have its own products using its own architecture – no Fiat Punto 40 OCIO magazine

based Alfa Romeos here. The complex new ‘Giorgio’ platform is being used for the Giulia and the Stelvio, and a raft of other models will spawn from it too. Most of the new products from ‘Giorgio’ are likely to be SUVs because that is what is appealing to most European, American and Chinese customers. Like it or not, SUVs are selling in big numbers, and luckily for Alfa the Stelvio appeals to brand aficionados as well as new customers. As standard, the Stelvio features alloy wheels, an info-entertainment system, eight speakers, an electric tailgate, auto lights and wipers, autonomous braking, a lane departure warning system and so much more. A Luxury pack adds electric leather

seats and wood trim, while a Sports pack adds sportier seats and cabin detailing. For the time being it’s quite simple when it comes to engines. There’s a 2.2 litre diesel and a 2.0 litre turbo petrol. The Ferrari-developed Quadrifoglio version offers a 2.9 litre V6 engine. Despite the increased ride height, the Stelvio drives almost as sweetly as the Giulia. The Stelvio and its sister car the Giulia are brand new from the ground up, and as such Alfa Romeo has made sure both cars are at the top of their games in terms of handling. Every variant of the Stelvio comes with rear wheel drive, but for a bit extra you can add Alfa’s Q4 all wheel drive system, which sends power u

to the rear wheels almost all of the time on the roads, but where a loss of traction is detected, up to 50 per cent of the power can be sent to the front wheels. It all means that the Stelvio is huge fun to drive for an SUV but also has crisp, sharp steering too. The Stelvio changes direction sweetly, and thanks to the weight-saving materials used, it feels light on its feet too. Alfa insists that the Stelvio is a road based SUV, however, there is a downhill descent system fitted should the need arise which makes it very practical in off road situations. It’s clear that Alfa Romeo designed the Stelvio to be the sports car of the SUV world. So, along with the aluminum parts,

all Stelvios get a carbon fibre prop-shaft – something that’s almost unheard of at this price point. The Stelvio’s light weight and efficient engines means it’s right up there with the best for economy and emissions. Alfa’s efforts to keep the extra weight at bay with the Stelvio certainly pays off at the pumps. It beats many of its premium SUV rivals for CO2 emissions, and matches them for fuel consumption. Unsurprisingly, the Quadrifoglio version with its 503bhp 2.9-litre V6 petrol engine will be the least frugal and the most costly to tax but hey, if that’s the vehicle you want then why let a little bit extra on the running cost spoil your fun. n suavemente, y gracias al peso que ahorran los materiales utilizados, también se siente ligero sobre sus pies.

The ladies came and enjoyed their game of ‘Dirty Santa’ sometimes known as ‘White Elephant’ which is based on the original Secret Santa game but with the choice of either picking a gift to open from the sack or stealing an opened present from another player ...it really was so much fun! The food and drink served up by Zen was superb and the atmosphere in this lovely restaurant was all out party. Costa Women Axarquia (CWA) hold monthly events throughout the year and is part of ‘Costa Women Spain’. You can join the local ‘Costa Women Axarquia’ facebook group to keep up to date with the local CWA monthly events and group activities. Malaga City

Beat the winter blues B

eat the winter blues with a day trip in to the city of

Málaga January can be a pretty bleak time, wherever you live in the world. With the post-christmas come-down, it’s important to have some ‘treats’ lined up to keep you in good spirits in the new year. A great way to break up the monotony is a city-break. Yet if a weekend away is a bit of a splurge after Christmas, we’re lucky to have one of Spain’s most diverse cities, right on our doorstep. Perfect for a day trip! Malaga is a city that has something for everyone: Whether it’s culture, history and art you’re after; exploring side streets

and hidden corners; or the fabulous gastronomy scene - whatever you are in to, Malaga delivers. Here are my top tips of things to do on a day in Malaga. When in Malaga - do like the Malagueños & start by taking a break! A coffee at a cafe on the street is the perfect way to start your day and soak up the ambience of the city.

E

Atarazanas Market

If you fancy a typical Malaga breakfast, why not treat yourself to some Churros y Chocolate. ‘Casa Aranda’ is one of the longeststanding cafes in Malaga and to this day they only open for breakfast (until around 1-2pm). It is also situated very closeby to the next stop on my suggested itinerary: The ‘Atarazanas Market’. The market must not be missed. The smells, sights and sounds are a feast for the senses. To this day, there has been nothing in the way of fresh produce that I haven’t been able to source in this large food market. From lemongrass to lenguado or rabbit to roquefort, you’ll surely find it here. Even if you are not buying, a wander around the market is an experience in itself. From here it’s probably the perfect time for a little pick me up! Almost opposite the entrance to the market is a side street where you will find another

of Malaga’s iconic destinations tucked away: ‘La Casa Antigua de la Guardia’. Here you can sample the local Malaga sweet wines, sherries and vermouth from the barrel. A great winter warmer. Famous as being one of the oldest bars in Malaga, they write your tab on the bar in chalk! Very popular with locals and visitors alike, it’s another that even if you’re not in the mood for drinking, you should visit for the atmosphere and history and maybe pick up a bottle of their own brand vermouth to take home with you. From here we take a stroll around the shops. The two main shopping streets in Malaga city centre being Calle Larios and Calle Nueva, run parallel to one another. However, don’t be afraid to explore the side streets where you can find some of the oldest and most interesting stores in the city from haberdashers to milliners. After a good look around the shops you

will have probably worked up a bit of an appetite again. For lunch, try out one of Malaga city centre’s fabulous tapas bars. My insider tip: head to my favourite foodie spot, Calle Moreno Monroy - referred to as “Eat Street”. Try traditional Spanish food done exceptionally well at ‘La Farola de Orellana’ or with a slightly modern twist at neighbouring ‘Wendy Gamba’. Or for ‘gourmet’ tapas try out ‘KGB’ for modern, fusion gastro-dishes, and make sure you order a glass of Botani wine to accompany them. After lunch, you might fancy a bit of culture to round off your day. Malaga has a huge number of Museums. I love the glass museum for its quirkiness. Also recommended: Carmen Thyssen Museum which is small and easily manageable in an hour or two. To finish your day off, take a stroll through El Pimpi - Malaga’s largest restaurant - through to their huge terrace facing the Alcazaba and Roman Theatre - here you should take some photos of the beautiful ruins. If you fancy a final refreshment, El Pimpi’s sunny terrace is a great spot. Alternatively, try out one of Malaga’s many roof bars. Classic Spanish Estofado El Estofado

By Anne Jennings

E

Anne Jennings lives in Spain and runs a home cooking school in Antequera.

E

stofado is a great hearty meal to have on a cold winter’s day or evening. It is tasty, healthy, filling and will warm you through. I often make a very large pot of it and leave it on the stove for the family to enjoy as they pass in and out of the house. A very important tip to avoid your estofado becoming a soup, (I learned the hard way), is to keep the carrots reasonably large otherwise they melt into the stew and also make sure you use potatoes that will stay in their chunks and not become powdery. I sometimes use food colouring but this is purely aesthetic so you don’t need to if you don’t want to. Estofado Ingredients - Serves 4 3 tablespoons of olive oil 500g stewing beef

250g carrots peeled and cut into large chunks 1 medium onion chopped 3 tomatoes skinned and chopped 1 small tin of peas or a handful of fresh peas 1 tablespoon of paprika 2 cloves of garlic finely chopped 1 teaspoon of flour 500g of potatoes peeled and cut into large chunks 1 wineglass of white wine 250ml of beef stock 150ml of water salt freshly ground black pepper Cooking Method Heat half the oil in a large, flameproof

cooking pot. Put the meat in the hot oil and brown. In a small frying pan heat the rest of the oil, add the onion and garlic and fry for about 5 minutes. Add the flour and the paprika and fry for 5 minutes more being careful not to burn this mix. Add the onion mix to the meat pot, add the white wine, stock and water and bring to the boil. Cook this for about an hour and a half. Add the carrots, chopped tomatoes and a little saffron (or a teaspoon of yellow food colouring) to the pot and cook for about 25 minutes. Then add the potatoes, the peas a little more beef stock if necessary and cook for another 20-25 minutes until the potatoes are cooked. Serve it with some crusty bread. n OCIO magazine

Well, I am here to quickly dispell this myth and show you how you can easily have fast, instant access to almost any website without the need for an ‘app’. The trick is to create what is called a ‘shortcut’. This shortcut creates a direct link between the website that you frequently visit and your mobile device. The shortcut creates an ‘icon’ on your mobile device homepage, much the same as an ‘app’ would do so. La Gustosa Beach

La Restinga Beach

...the perfect venue for all your celebrations I

speak from experience when I say that there is something quite special about Restaurante La Restinga Beach, located on Playa Vilches on the Torrox to Nerja coast road at Km 288 (just outside of Nerja). I think it must be the unique blend of high quality dining and the delightful beachside location. The cuisine is Mediterranean in style and is simply fantastic. Offering a selection of succulent meats, fresh seafood, spectacular salads, soups and caseroles and rice dishes which are somewhat of a house speciality and need to be tasted to be believed. It is said that if you haven’t enjoyed a paella at La Restinga Beach...you haven’t enjoyed a paella. Despite being a restaurant of high quality, the ambience is very relaxed, encouraging guests to call in as they pass, if only for a chilled beer, glass of wine or a cup of coffee whilst enjoying the lovely beach side setting and enviable views. But more than just a restaurant, La Restinga Beach are specialists in events and celebrations of all kinds including weddings, birthday parties, communions, corporate lunches and dinners in fact any event that needs celebrating is an event La Restinga can organise, and always with the same 66 OCIO magazine

high standard that La Restinga Beach is famous for. The venue is so diverse in what it can offer that you can even choose your setting utilising the beach, the large dining terrace or even the interior dining room. So if you are planning an event, large or small, do contact, or call in and speak to, La Restinga Beach - the specialists in making your ideas a reality. n

H
