alentine’s gifts ideas for men and women alike have changed immensely over the years but very few people know where the ideas first originated and why gifts were given on this particular day. It is believed that in the third century AD, Roman Emperor Claudius II, in an attempt to bolster his army forbade young men to marry but a holy man by the name of Valentine flouted the ban, performing marriages in secret. Unfortunately, he was executed on February the 14th in AD 270 for his defiance. Thus, every day since then on 14th of February, millions of people across the world celebrate Valentine’s Day with the giving of a present for their loved one.

No longer is it enough just to give a card (often presented anonymously) or a single red rose; people have had to be a little more creative in their romantic gestures. t has been a fiery start to 2017, with the markets having to decipher the outcome of speeches given by some of the world’s most powerful political figures, Theresa May and Donald Trump. As a result, Sterling has been the biggest mover; after hitting worrying lows early in the New Year, it has rebounded on the back of British PM Theresa May warning European leaders that the UK is prepared to crash out of the EU if she cannot negotiate a reasonable exit deal. Although May mentioned that the UK could be the EU’s “best friend” if the article 50 divorce talks went well, she also said she was prepared to walk away, which sent alarm bells ringing around the Eurozone. It appears that the PM’s plan is built around 12 principles for a clean Brexit and included a call for the UK to leave the single market and to avoid the EU’s immigration rules and being subject to the European court of justice. Whilst all eyes of late have been on the Brexit plan, there is expected to be a shift in the market to political risks within the Eurozone as the French, German and Dutch elections take place over the course of this year. The political unrest across the Eurozone and rise of the antipopulist parties could be a determining factor into potential Euro weakness. In addition, the European Central Bank are still in the middle of their easing policy which could put further pressure on the currency throughout the middle and back half of the year. n

o how was january for you? What with dry January, low carb and sugar free diets and goodness knows what else, I am guessing irt wasn’t a whole lot of fun! Of course we all know that being healthy should be encouraged, but I do believe that most people are doing these things because they feel pressured in to losing weight. We have been conditioned for years and years to believe that if we are not slim then we are not healthy or attractive or good enough. The diet industry works hard to make us monitor every morsel and scrap of food we put in our mouths and then feel guilty and like failures when we do not achieve ‘slim’ status. And I for one have HAD ENOUGH. I want to know who decided skinny was the ultimate make of body in the first place and when did curves become a bad thing? When I meet with my girlfriends the majority of the conversations we have focus on our bodies, and our self-loathing of them. No one is ever happy. When we greet each other we say, ‘Oh you look well,’ or ‘have you lost weight?’ Never ‘Oh you look happy today!’ We always focus on what we look like on the outside and it is ALL wrong. But we are all good enough. Our bodies are the most magical and amazing things no matter what shape or size we are. OK, yes, being morbidly obese isn’t great but most of the people I know who feel like a fat blob are way below the average size of a woman. And yes, I know it’s also ‘all relative’ and about how that person feels about themselves personally, but again, I reiterate, who the decided skinny was the goal we should all strive for? We’ve been conditioned to believe that skinny = perfection... but it doesn’t. So help yourself to a better, happier 2017. Stop focusing on weight and focus on health. On feeling energised. On enjoying your life, for it is often too painfully short. You’re all blooming gorgeous - believe it!!! n

Automotive love is no different. Car enthusiasts are happy to declare their love for a car and defend it against all comers. Deep down, though, they know their perfect car isn’t, that there’s at least one thing about it they don’t like and would change if they could, but we love it anyway. to see past them and love it anyway. I am talking about the Giulia Quadrofoglio Verde, the intense, passionate one. Rather than a family car upfitted for racing, it is a family car that racecar engineers and drivers would build for themselves, albeit with a few concessions to accommodate everyday driving and livability. Finding a happy medium between being a drivers car and a family car is a tough balance

to find successfully and the result can appear to be a little eccentric in places because of it. However, despite its eccentricities, the Giulia is very nice to drive as a family car, providing all the comforts you hope for. But if you want this car to drive like it was designed to though (ie, without the family), put it in Dynamic or Race mode and you get a different car altogether. Alfa has struck a fantastic balance between the necessary stiffness for handling performance and the comfort for everyday ride quality. The ride quality pairs well with a surprisingly quiet and isolated cabin, shockingly quiet in fact at motorway u

aman de todas formas. Mi amor por el Alfa Romeo Giulia 2017 no es diferente. Veo sus fallos, pero decido pasarlas de largo y amarlo de todas formas. Estoy hablando del Giulia Quadrofoglio Verde, el intenso y apasionado. Más que una familia de autos equipado para las carreras, es una familia de autos que los ingenieros y conductores de autos de carrera querrían construir para sí mismos, aunque con algunas concesiones para ajustarse al día a día y su habitabilidad. Encontrar un punto medio cómodo entre un auto de carreras y un auto familiar es algo difícil de hacer y como resultado el auto puede parecer algo excéntrico en

algunos lugares. Sin embargo, más allá de sus excentricidades, el Giulia es muy agradable para su uso como auto familiar, pues provee todas las comodidades que se podrían esperar. Pero si quieres conducir este auto para lo que fue diseñado (es decir, sin la familia), ponlo en modo dinámico o de carrera y tendrás un auto completamente diferente. Alfa ha encontrado un fantástico equilibrio entre la rigidez necesaria para exprimir el rendimiento y la comodidad para la calidad de conducción cotidiana. Rich, soft leather is standard on all Giulias. It’s also on the dash and doors and features accent stitching. The dashboard design is interesting and original, featuring a frameless infoentertainment screen which disappears into the surrounding black panel when you turn it off. The rear seats are a little more of a compromise, as they sit quite inboard and require a little agility to get in and out. Once you’re in there though, you’ll enjoy plenty of head, shoulder and knee room. With such breeding and hsitory, any new Alfa Romeo will suffer from the weight of expectation. Alfa Romeo is an enthusiast’s brand, and we want to believe in it, just the same as we want the Giulia to be the perfect family sports car. Fairy tales and Disney films will tell you that love conquers all and whilst the Alfa Romeo Giulia may not be perfect, it is so good at its primary mission of offering a family sports car that we love it anyway. Whether you choose to rely on your own resources or prefer to outsource to a professional, an event planning committee

ought to be set up. You are looking for a small team of dependable, responsible, flexible persons to help you make the important decisions and generally run the event with or for you. The next point on the agenda is the budget. This is important and must be correct. You should end up with a document detailing every conceivable cost and anticipated expense for the event. Be honest with the costs and list absolutely everything, however small. Then when it is done go back and add an additional 10% for contingencies. Now you have a budget to work with. There is a old saying in comedy that success is based entirely on timing. Well, the same can be said for a successful event. Lead time is all important, but more u

ere I offer you my recipe for another easy to make stew for the cold winter nights - carrillada. What is carrillada you may ask? Simply put, it is cheek. Beef cheek is carrillada de ternera, pork cheek is carrillada de cerdo, lamb cheek is carrillada de cordero…etc. And despite their differences in taste, all carrilladas are delicious. The cut of meat is unique because it is quite meaty but surprisingly lean, a rare marvel for many who expect it to be either fatty or tough. It does require a certain cooking style to ensure the meat is tender but the end result is one of the best things I’ve ever eaten in Spain, and that is saying a lot! Ingredients for 4 persons: 1 kg pig cheeks real butter 62 OCIO magazine

Carrilladas en vino tinto Agnes Van Rentergem 4 slices of bacon 2 onions (sliced, but not too small) mushrooms 300 ml of red wine 200 ml beef stock 1 soup spoon of brown sugar flour or gravy granules Step-by-step recipe: To begin you can either cut up the cheeks into 4 pieces or leave them in one piece, the choice is yours. Put salt and pepper on both sides and fry the cheeks in a frying

pan untill slightly brown. Add the bacon and the onions and then add the soup spoon of brown sugar. Pour in the red wine and the 200 ml of beef stock and cover. Leave to simmer for about 1 hour: take care that you have enough sauce, if not simply add water. After an hour check that the meat is soft, if not, leave a little longer. It is very important that the meat is soft before moving on to the next step! For the last 10 minutes of cooking add the mushrooms and thicken the sauce with flour or gravy granules. You can serve this dish with chips, boiled potatoes, jacket potratoes, rice or noodles as you prefer. I hope you are successful and that you and your family thoroughly enjoy this wonderful Spanish dish. n

quí os traigo mi receta para otro guiso fácil de preparar en estas frías noches de invierno – la carrillada. Algunos os preguntaréis qué es la carrillada. En pocas palabras, es carrillo. La carrillada puede hacerse con carrillo de ternera, de cerdo, de cordero… Y a pesar de la diferencia en el sabor, todos los tipos de carrillada están deliciosos. El corte de la carne es único porque es bastante sustancioso pero sorprendentemente magro, una grata sorpresa para quienes creyeran que se trataba de una carne más grasienta o más dura. Se necesita algo de habilidad en la cocina para asegurarse de que la carne quede tierna, pero el resultado final es uno de los mejores platos que he comido nunca en España, ¡y eso ya es decir mucho!

Ingredientes para 4 personas: 1kg de carrillada de cerdo Mantequilla 4 lonchas de beicon 2 cebollas (picadas, pero no muy pequeñas) Champiñones Vino tinto 200 ml de caldo de ternera 1 cucharada sopera de azúcar moreno Harina, o gránulos de salsa Receta paso a paso: Para empezar puedes cortar la carrillada en 4 trozos o bien dejarla entera, la elección es tuya. Salpimiéntala por ambos lados y fríela en una sartén hasta que comience a dorarse. Añade el beicon, las cebollas y la cucharada sopera de azúcar moreno.

Añade el vino tinto y los 200 ml de caldo de carne y tápalo. Déjalo cocer durante 1 hora aproximadamente, vigilando que haya suficiente salsa, y añadiendo más agua si es necesario. Después de una hora, comprueba que la carne esté tierna, en caso contrario déjala un poco más. Es muy importante que la carne esté tierna antes de pasar al siguiente punto. Cuando falten 10 minutos de cocción añade los champiñones y espesa la salsa con harina o con gránulos para salsa. Puedes servir este plato a tu gusto, con patatas fritas, hervidas, rellenas, arroz o tallarines.
