25 years of romantic movie memories

hroughout history, the best romantic and romantic comedy films have given cinema some of its most unforgettable, tearjerking and heartstopping moments. There are many lists and charts about the best all time chick flicks, but here is ours, OCIO magazine’s very own best of chick-flicks over the last 25 years. So, in no particular order, here we go: Ghost (1990). Starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg. Our opinion: One of the most beautiful, and fun, love stories of all time. Watched alone with a glass of wine or in the company of others for a chick flick night to remember Ghost is a must have in the DVD collection.

The Notebook (2004). Starring Gena Rowlands, James Garner and Rachel McAdams. Our opinion: Never mind the last 25 years, The Notebook is one of the all time great love stories. You immediately fall in love with the characters and you want to follow every step of their doomed love story. I cannot think of a film more perfect for Valentines Day! 3. Pretty Woman (1990). Starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. Our opinion: A classic if ever there was one. Truly watchable over & over with a nice glass wine, chocolates and a cuddle on the sofa.

Great acting by all and Julia Roberts looks stunning.

The Wedding Date (2005). Starring Debra Messing and Dermot Mulroney . Our opinion: The very first time that my 06 OCIO magazine

wife and I watched this film we were so impressed with it that we watched it again straight afterwards. This is a warm, funny and thoroughly enjoyable movie. Highly recommended for a cosy night in.

The holiday (2006) Starring Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Jack Black. Our opinion: I completely enjoyed Kate Winslet as the hopelessly devoted Iris. Cameron Diaz and Jude Law were their usual perfect selves and Jack Black kept his character to an energetic hum rather than an explosion of crazy antics. This is a wonderful romantic tale of love won and lost.

6. Nottinghill (1999) Starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts. Our opinion: Based around a theme of love between people of

The Notebook es una de las grandes historias de amor de todos los tiempos. Allie y Noah son los dos protagonistas, y son maravillosos. En seguida uno se enamora de los personajes, y va a querer seguir cada paso de su historia de amor maldita.

Pretty Woman (2004), con Richard Gere y Julia Roberts. Nuestra opinión: un clásico donde los haya. Si no sabe nada de esta película, es que no ha vivido. Realmente se deja ver, una tras otra, con una buena copa de vino, chocolates y abrazos en el sofá.

The acting is great and the chemistry between Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler is wonderful.

How to lose a guy in 10 days (2003) Starring Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey.

If you enjoy romantic comedies then this film will not disapoint. It is my favourite of the genre. Also, there’s no doubt about it, Kate Hudson is easy on the eyes for us gents!

I would imagine Matthew McConaughey makes a pretty picture for the girls too.

The wedding planner (2001) Starring Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey.

Our opinion: The Wedding Planner is a must see chick-flick. It’s a romantic comedy with all the right elements. But it goes above and beyond the standard chick-flick with so many lovable characters that you can’t decide which one you want to win at the game of love! It’s charming, funny, sweet, sentimental and is just down right pleasant to watch.

So that’s it, OCIO magazine’s round up of our favourite chick flicks of the past 25 years. Each and everyone of them comes highly recommended for a night in with 08 OCIO magazine

Nuestra opinión: Si Usted disfruta de la comedia romántica, entonces esta película no le dejará desilusionado, no importa de qué sexo es. Por otra parte, no cabe duda, Kate Hudson resulta agradable a la vista, ¡para nosotros los hombres! Me imagino que Matthew McConaughey hace un buen cuadro para las chicas también.

The Romance of Candlelight W

hen you think of creating a romantic mood or effect, what’s the first thing that comes to mind?

Besides a great partner to be amorous with, candles are usually at the top of the list.

What is it about this item that makes it so irrefutably synonymous with romance? It could be it’s classic elegance, the delightful playfulness of firelight twinkling in a room or maybe it’s the way a person’s skin seems to take on an almost angelic glow when in this lustrous light. No matter what the reason, candles and the light they cast will always remain an essential ingredient for romance. In fact, it is not just a romantic additive, but also a way to mark special occasions and celebrations. Candles are used to celebrate birthdays, weddings and many other special life events so it’s inclusion in a couple’s romantic life, seemingly, is a natural step.

How you go about using candles to enhance your romantic life, though, can be done in a myriad of ways. Truly the possibilities of this magical influence are endless. If you’ve felt your romantic 14 OCIO magazine

For everyday romance you might try placing candles on the dining table, in the bathroom or on a night stand next to your bed. If either you or your partner has had a stressful day, use aromatic candles known for their calming or aphrodisiac qualities.

Also play with the colours, height, texture, style and grouping of your candles. Each change creates a different effect. Find the one you like the best.

Special romantic evenings or other events are definitely heightened with the addition of candles. As a couple, try this to make a special wish or dream come true. Use a candle each and carve a heart into the candle. Then write, as specifically as possible, what you wish to come true and

place it under the candle. Light your candle and let it burn down completely and your wish, hopefully, will be granted.

For your next interlude, try filling the entire room with candlelight, using a variety of different shaped, sized and coloured candles, the effect is quite spectacular.

You could also create a heart or the words “I love you” with the candles. Tea lights work well for those purposes. You may also try giving one special, sentimental candle a month to your loved one. Each month hunt down a candle either through the Internet or in local shops, gift wrap it and leave it in a special place for your loved one to find.

Let them know the candle is to be lit only during special romantic times with each other. Make it a point to find time to light the candle at least once a week. The idea is to encourage and invite romance through this time-honoured romantic symbol.

Either as a romantic couple or just to take a little quiet time to yourself in a bath or over a good book, make it a point to indulge and bask in the glow of candlelight at least once a week. Your life will be just that little bit more romantic and less stressful for it! n

No importa cuál es el motivo, las velas y la luz que desprenden siempre serán un ingrediente esencial del romance.

De hecho, no es simplemente algún aditivo romántico, sino que es la manera de señalar los eventos especiales y las celebraciones. Exploring the Axarquia Explorando la Axarquía Words: Harvey Smith

U

ntil 10-15 years ago, the Axarquía was relatively unknown compared to the coastal regions.

Then, northern European expatriates started to discover the pretty hilltop and inland villages like Cómpeta, Frigiliana, Comares etc, and they started to buy up property not only as holiday homes but as permanent residencies, making these villages popular to more and more expatriates.

These days, rural tourism comprises a large part of the local economies. However, the area is still breathtakingly beautiful and has not been spoilt by the interest and influx of foreign buyers. The main attraction is often the area’s dramatic hill and mountain scenery. The landscape is riven by deep valleys lined with terraces and irrigation channels that date back to Muslim times The many unspoilt, white washed villages, offer so much, including the local wines and superb cuisine.

Signposted routes with names like Ruta del Vino link groups of villages in one-day drives along the snaking mountain roads and are well worth following if you have a little time to explore.

Competa, Salares, Sedella, Canillas de Aceituna, Comares and Frigiliana to name but a few. Colmenar is one of the most important villages in the Axarquia region, being the Capital of the Malaga Mountain villages. It is just 35 kilometres inland from Malaga, on the “Carretera de Colmenar”, a road that cuts and winds up through the Malaga Mountains, until you reach the village at 696 meters above sea level.

The Axarquia region is huge, diverse and fascinating, I urge you to go and explore, I guarantee that it will be time very well spent. n

asta hace 10-15 años, Axarquia era relativamente desconocida en comparación con las regiones litorales. Y desde entonces, algunos expatriados del norte de Europa comenzaron a descubrir las hermosas aldeas en los picos y por el interior, como Cómpeta, Frigiliana, Comares etc, y empezaron a comprar inmuebles, no solamente como residencias veraniegas, sino como residencias permanentes, haciendo que estas aldeas se fueran cogiendo fama entre cada vez más expatriados.

Hoy en día, el turismo rural forma una parte

importante de las economías locales. No obstante, la zona sigue siendo increíblemente atractiva y no se ha estropeado por los intereses y la afluencia de compradores extranjeros. El atractivo principal es, a menudo, el dramático paisaje de sus montes y montañas de la zona. El paisaje está dividido por hondos valles bordeados de bancales y acequias que se remontan a la época musulmana.

Las muchas aldeas encaladas que se conservan ofrecen tanto, incluyendo los vinos de la zona y una gastronomía exquisita.

Las rutas señalizadas con nombres como la Ruta del Viño enlazan conjuntos de aldeas en distancias de una jornada de conducción, serpenteando por carreteras por los montes, y valen la pena si dispone de un poco de tiempo para explorar.

Los pueblos de interés medio incluyen a La Viñuela, Cómpeta, Salares, Sedella, Canillas de Aceituna, Comares y Frigiliana, entre otros muchos. Colmenar es uno de los pueblos más importantes en la región de Axarquia, al ser capital de los pueblos montañeros de Málaga. Se sitúa a solamente 35 kilómetros hacia el interior de Málaga, en la Carretera de Colmenar que recorta y serpentea por las Montañas de Málaga, hasta llegar a un pueblo a 696 metros por encima del nivel de mar.

I guess the first thing to consider when buying lingerie for a women is to buy her something that she will actually wear, and not just in the bedroom. I know I said think sexy but let’s not run before we can walk.

Remember, this is her gift, not yours. For example, a lot of women do not like to wear thongs or see through lingerie. Some women will find garter belts very sexy, while others will see them as ‘tarty’ and may wonder what kind of woman you want her to be. For a clue, look at what she wears in her closet. Does she wear tight jeans with a tight t-shirt? If so, she may like a lingerie item that is a little tighter, that shows some skin. If the clothes in her closet are looser and don’t show much skin, she’ll probably want something a little more modest. If you’re not certain, a camisole or slip in silk or satin that flows away from the body may be your best bet.

With lingerie, size is an issue. If you buy something that’s too small she may feel flattered or she may feel fat. If you buy something too big, she’ll absolutely feel fat. If you’re not certain what size she is, write down the sizes of items in her drawer and ask a lingerie saleswoman for help.

hen thoughts turn to love and romance there is inevitably a period of preparation required (to both sexes I might add), and waxing is a popular precuser to intimicy with a loved one.

From the dressing rooms you move into the stunning interior of Hammam Al Ándalus. Here you are able to relax and enjoy the splendour of changing from pool to pool, each with a different temperature.

Enjoy the steam room, the relaxing room with warm marble tops to lie on and generally allow yourself to be immersed in a different world. The ‘Ritual’ part of the package includes a relaxing and enjoyable massage. There are several choices of massage. As you are serenly ushered into the massage suite, you are encouraged to choose your own scented oil for the massage experience. Fiat 500X

‘The renegade of the 500 lineup’

T

his year, Fiat will slice the 500 pie even finer with the all new 500X. The new model is naturally similar in footprint to the 500L, but is based on different architecture which is shared with the new Jeep Renegade, alongside which it is being built in Melfi, Italy.

Some might speculate that the new Fiat 500X has distanced itself from the Fiat brand in terms of its size, but the new crossover keeps classic Fiat design elements in check.

The shared Jeep DNA suggests the new 500X model is prepped for all-wheel-drive, though front-drive will also be offered. It uses the Renegade’s most basic, onroad-oriented AWD system and features the same rear-axle disconnect system that reduces friction and rotational inertia losses when operating in front-drive mode, for improved fuel economy.

Aside from the All Wheel Drive option, the 38 OCIO magazine

new model comes with a host of fabulous features, including a segment-exclusive nine-speed automatic transmission and an array of additional driver aids and safety features including lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring with rear crosstraffic detection, a backup camera with grid lines, rear parking sensors, hill start assist, electronic park brake and traction control, and forward collision mitigation with full auto-braking capability.

In terms of design versus space, the 500X’s lower roofline and angled rear window may cost a little in passenger space and boot volume compared to the 500L, but the design benefits far out weigh any negatives The 500X will be available in four trim levels named Pop, Street, Trekking and Trekking-plus. For the fashion conscious amongst us, the 500X is offered in 11 different paint colours, including a

trendy matte bronze. Inside there will be a similarly broad array of vinyl, leather, fabric, and piping colour combinations including a particularly fetching Tobacco Brown on some models.

The marketing team at Fiat assert that the Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X will appeal to different types of buyers and hence, won’t compete directly with each other in terms of sales. The motoring trade in general seem to agree, but will the new 500X affect sales of the 500L, only time will tell, but the battle for top spot will certainly be an interesting one. n

Este nuevo modelo, como es de suponer, se asemeja al 500L en cuanto a su huella, pero se basa en otra arquitectura que comparte con el nuevo Jeep Renegade, al lado del cual se fabrica, en Melfi, Italia. Algunos pueden especular que el nuevo Fiat 500X se ha distanciado de la marca en términos de tamaño, pero este nuevo todoterreno mantiene bajo control los clásicos elementos del diseño de Fiat. En términos del diseño cara a espacio, la línea de tejado más baja del 500X y la ventana trasera inclinada puede restar un poco de espacio para el pasajero y volumen del maletero, en comparación con el espacio del 500L, pero las ventajas del diseño superan con creces las críticas negativas.

El 500X estará disponible en cuatro acabados, que se denominan Pop, Street, Trekking y Trekking-Plus. Para los más sensibles a la moda, el 500X se ofrece en 11 colores distintos, incluyendo un

hat is it that makes chocolate so irresistible?

A large part of chocolate’s allure, of course, lies in the taste - a deliciously rich concoction that satisfies the most intense craving. But several chemical reactions are also at work. For one thing, chocolate stimulates the secretion of endorphins, producing a pleasureable sensation similar to the “runner’s high” a jogger feels after running several miles.

Chocolate also contains a neurotransmitter, serotonin, that acts as an anti-depressant.

Other substances, such as theobromine and phenylethylamine, have a stimulating effect. However, the truth is that scientists are still not positive how the over threehundred chemicals contained in chocolate make us feel so good. With so much going for it, it’s unfortunate that chocolate has developed a bad reputation on the health front.

Fortunately, scientists are beginning to disprove some common myths about the dangers of eating too much chocolate.

While both cocoa and chocolate contain sugar, they also have properties that work against sugar’s tendency to produce the oral bacteria that eventually leads to dental decay. Furthermore, while chocolate may not be the most healthy snack around, it 42 OCIO magazine

does contain a number of nutrients As for calories, no one is going to claim chocolate is the quintessential diet food.

Still, the average chocolate bar contains approximately 250 calories - low enough for a dieter to enjoy one as an occasional treat

Picasso Museum: Make no mistake, the people of Malaga are so very proud of the fact that Picasso was born here. It was a big day when the King and Queen of Spain inaugurated the Picasso Museum on the 27th October 2003. The museum is housed in the Palacio de Buenavista. You will find it right in the heart of the Historic Centre of the city, with the dramatic backdrop of the Alcazaba Fortress, literally two minutes walking distance from Malaga Cathedral. This magnificent old building has been painstakingly restored to befit the importance of the works of the great artist. Also, just a couple of minutes away, in the Plaza de la Merced, is the Casa Natal

(Birthplace of Picasso), which has been open to the public since 1988. There are exhibition rooms in the Casa Natal, as well as pictures and a view of how life was for the artist in his early years in Malaga. Since the two buildings are only a few minutes distance apart, visiting them both in one day is not only feasible but recommended.

Museo Automovilistico de Málaga: One of several new museums in Malaga - it opened in 2010 - this museum houses the private collection of Portuguese car fanatic Joao Magalhaes. The collection is worth around 25 million euros, and is one of the most important vintage car collections in the world. The museum is housed in one of Malaga´s most architecturally stunning buildings - the old tobacco factory (Fabrica de Tabacos). Constructed in 1927, it has been carefully transformed to house the impressive collection of more than 80 vintage and modern cars including fine examples of Bugatti, Auburn, Bentley, Jaguar, Ferrari and Mercedes plus a host of not so well known collectibles from a bygone era. n

Vamos a comenzar con el estupendo complejo de la nueva marina que se llama el Muelle Uno. Muelle Uno: con tiendas, restaurantes y bares a cada lado del paseo central arbolado, flanqueado por atractivos veleros en el otro lado. Muelle Uno no es un complejo de compras y restaurantes del montón. Este complejo al aire libre que bordea el mar ofrece una experiencia contemporánea de tiendas y restauración, además de unas impresionantes vistas de La Alcazaba como telón de fondo. El complejo tiene el orgullo de incorporar un abanico impresionante de más de 30 tiendas, que venden de todo, desde ropa, zapatos y complementos, hasta cosmética, joyería artesanal y muebles domésticos.

Los restaurantes y bares también son de varios tipos, brindando la oportunidad de disfrutar de muchas y variadas gastronomías de todas partes del mundo.

Para quienes les gusta el ajetreo de un mercadillo, el que se celebra en Muelle Uno no tiene desperdicio. Se celebra el último domingo de cada mes.

Museo de Picasso: qué no le quepa la menor duda de que los malagueños son tan orgullosos del hecho de que nació aquí Picasso. Era un día muy importante

cuando el Rey y la Reina de España inauguraron el Museo de Picasso, el 27 de octubre de 2003. El museo se ubica dentro del Palacio de Buenavista. Lo encontrará en el corazón del Centro Histórico de la ciudad, con el dramático telón de fondo de la Fortaleza de Alcazaba, a dos minutos de paseo desde la Catedral de Málaga.

Este espléndido edificio antiguo ha sido meticulosamente restaurado acorde con la transcendencia de las obras de este gran artista. Por otra parte, a solamente un par de minutos de distancia, en la Plaza de la Merced, está la Casa Natal de Picasso, abierta al público desde el año 1988. Hay salas de exposición dentro de la Casa Natal además de cuadros y una visión de cómo vivía el artista en sus primeros años en Málaga. Puesto que los dos edificios se encuentran a solamente dos minutos de distancia, visitarlos en un solo día es no

solamente factible sino recomendable.

Museo Automovilístico de Málaga: uno de los muchos museos en Málaga – que abrió en 2010 – este museo alberga la colección privada del fanático de coches portugués, Joâo Magalhaes. La colección tiene un valor de unos 25 millones de euros y es una de las colecciones de coches más antiguas del mundo. El museo se alberga en uno de los edificios más impresionantes, desde el punto de vista arquitectónico, de Málaga – la vieja Fábrica de Tabacos. Construido en 1927, se ha transformado con esmero en una casa con una colección impresionante de más de 80 coches de época y modernos, incluyendo unos elegantes ejemplares de Bugatti, Auburn, Bentley, Jaguar, Ferrari y Mercedes, además de un sinfín de coleccionables no tan conocidos de antaño. n OCIO magazine

On the 32nd floor of the famous Shard building, restaurateur Rainer Becker provides his guests a better view of the city than the London Eye has ever done. Rainer Becker is well-known for his Asian restaurants, where he focuses on Japanese cuisine, but for Oblix he had something else in mind. Although he did keep the Japanese influences, this restaurant will also give you a feeling of a New York style grill. The flavours of the Greek cuisine at this restaurant are authentic and tasty. Fresh produce from the islands volcanic soil, seafood straight from the ocean and fine cut meats make it a dinner you will never forget. The beautiful scenery and the romantic ambience of the terrace make Rossellini’s Restaurant a perfect spot for a sunset dinner while travelling to Italy. Chef Pino Lavarra, who mastered his cooking skills at the famous Le Manoir Aux Quat Saisons in England, guarantees you will be dazzled by his cuisine.

La Chèvre d’Or Restaurant, Eze, France: Situated along the Côte d’Azur in France, La Chèvre d’Or offers the most spectacular view of the area. The scenery at this restaurant is a mix of the beautiful azure ocean, the green mountains and the villages scattered around. At the bottom of the hills there are small harbours that house beautiful yachts. The restaurant

terrace is decorated with romantic touches, such as lanterns and small tables for two. Chef Ronan Karvarree offers his guests a Southern French cuisine full of Mediterranean flavours.

Le Jules Verne Restaurant, Paris, France: In what many consider to be the most romantic city in the world, this restaurant has the best location. Situated on the second deck of the Eiffel Tower, this is a must when visiting this tourist attraction. From the bottom of the Eiffel Tower, a private lift takes you up to 410 feet above the ground where you will be enjoying a beautiful view of the city. The French love their French cuisine and so Chef Pascal Féraud sticks to his heritage each time he assembles a new menu for his guests. His menu includes foie gras, langoustine and seared turbot. Guests may choose between a five and six course tasting menu with an additional bespoke wine arrangement.

Oblix Restaurant, Londres, Inglaterra: de acuerdo, no se ven ni el océano ni las montañas desde el Oblix Restaurant, pero ¿qué es lo que no gusta en la ciudad de Londres? En el piso XXXII del famoso edificio denominado el Shard, el restaurador, Rainer Becker, da a sus comensales una mejor vista de la ciudad que el London Eye. Rainer Becker está conocido por sus restaurantes asiáticos, donde pone el centro de atención en la cocina japonesa, pero en cuanto al Oblix se le ocurrió otra idea. Aunque sí mantiene las influencias japonesas, este restaurante tiene ambiente de una parrillada al estilo de Nueva York. El enorme espacio abierto da a los comensales un vistazo de la cocina abierta y el cristal que bordea

todo el restaurante le recordará del hecho de que Londres está por todas partes.

El estilo distintivo de Becker en términos de comedores exclusivos, sofisticados y urbanos se mantiene evidente en el Oblix Restaurant.

Mikla Restaurant, Estambul, Turquía: Se conoce muy bien Estambul por su mezcla entre lo tradicional y lo moderno, y el Mikla Restaurant mantiene esta temática.

Desde el restaurante, gozará de una vista espectacular de la ciudad, incluyendo el Hagia Sophia y el Palacio Topkapi.

El ambiente moderno de la terraza del restaurante le recordará que Usted se encuentra en una ciudad de categoría mundial que ha sabido mantener su legado. El Chef Mehmet Gürs ensambla una carta que es como mínimo tan interesante como la ciudad misma. Con orígenes turco y escandinavo, incorpora varios aspectos de esas gastronomías en su carta de Mikla que da como resultado unas combinaciones que harán que su

paladar pida más.

Pyrgos Restaurant, Santorino, Grecia: A menudo se dice que no hay lugar en la tierra como la Isla de Santorini, en Grecia y, a lo largo de las pintorescas calles y limpias casas blancas le esperan muchas experiencias del buen comer que Usted no va a querer perderse. Pyrgos Restaurant es una de esas experiencias.

Justo en el centro de Santorino, en el punto más elevado, Pyrgos le dejará sin aliento con sus vistas por 360 graos de la hermosa isla y del océano. Los sabores de la cocina griega en este restaurante son auténticos y sabrosos. La Chèvre d`Or Restaurant, Eze, Francia: Ubicado en la Costa Azul de Francia, La Chèvre d`Or Restaurant ofrece la vista más espectacular de la zona. El paisaje desde este restaurante es una mezcla del hermoso océano azul, de las verdes montañas y de las aldeas desperdigadas por doquier. Por la falda de los montes se encuentran unos pequeños puertos donde amarran unos vistosos veleros.
