am one of those people that deeply embraces the magic of Christmas. For me, it’s more about what it does to people than anything else. I like the way we invite friends and family into our homes to enjoy a drink by the fire, give gifts and simply take time to enjoy each others company. And I am a big fan of decorating the tree, the house and even the street given the chance. You see I come from a family of Christmas decoration enthusiasts. My Grandma, bless her, has a style which might be best described as ‘Santa’s grotto’ but my mum (probably as a result of growing up in the annual Santa’s grotto) is the doyenne of cathedral candles wrapped in broad ribbon,

The Christmas lunch table is as much a decorative feast as it is a gourmet one. Enamel placemats look extremely stylish and place cards will ensure that the chef gets to sit next to the person he/she wants to. There is usually little space for elaborate decorations on the table once the turkey and its own trimmings have arrived, so why not hang your adornments over the table in dangling glass balls filled with flowers or sparkling stones? t’s the festive season and once again Malaga city prepares to welcome visitors from far and wide to enjoy this special time of year. The lights alone are worth a trip into Malaga to see and when you consider everything else this vibrant city has to offer, a Christmas visit to Malaga is an absolute must. Naturally at this time of year the great beaches on offer may not be too appealing but with the many and varied tapas bars and restaurants, good shopping, delightful museums, relaxing and envigorating arab baths and so much more there is something to keep everyone entertained. And what better way to round off a day of Christmas shopping than with a “gintonic” on a spectacular rooftop terrace? A great place to start a visit to Malaga is with a stroll down the lovely Calle Larios, one of Spain’s most exclusive shopping streets where many big name brands and designers can be found along with many very talented street entertainers. The Christmas lighs on Calle Larios are always nothing short of spectacular. At the end of Calle Larios you will find the impressive Plaza de la Constitución with it’s huge Christmas tree. This is Malaga’s main square and is as relaxing as it is charming, with plenty of space for children to run around and let off some steam. Another very popular shopping experience can be found at Malaga’s central market (Mercado Central de Atarazaras). It is without doubt one of the most impressive and charming markets I’ve ever visited (and I’ve visited lots!). What I love about Malaga’s market is that it isn’t too big, but it is filled with plenty of amazing food, friendly vendors and also many little snack bars. Para seguir de compras, pero combinadas con gran cantidad de opciones para comer y beber, dirígete hacia el puerto y su fabuloso Muelle Uno. Y volviendo a ese gin-tonic en la azotea: hay muchos lugares para visitar, pero mi favorito es el Hotel AC Málaga Palacio. Costa Women Axarquía at Cafe del Mar The Costa Women Axarquia held a ‘Share Your Wares’ & Fashion Show at the fabulous Cafe del Mar in Torre del Mar for their November event. On a beautiful sunny afternoon, the guests, both men & women, enjoyed seeing some wonderful fashions as the models sashayed around the beachside terrace displaying the lovely outfits to some great funky music. A nice collection of stalls were present too and it was great to see what these ladies do. Everyone enjoyed a lovely lunch and had a thoroughly good time. he Christmas season is upon us and with it comes an invitation or two to a party...if you are lucky of course. These festive invitations often come with confusing dress code requests from the host. Lets be honest, figuring out what to wear on the average day is hard enough but now we have to decipher which styles will work within a certain dress code. And it’s not only women, men are often confused, too. So as a seasoned party goer of many years I would like to offer my help and advice on this somewhat difficult topic. We start with the all time favourite and perhaps the most simple and obvious one, the black tie event. Dress Code: Black Tie Translation: Old Hollywood glamour. The safe bet: A floor-length gown is the way to go for any formal event that stipulates black tie. Be a celebrity for the night and strut your stuff in a gorgeous satin, taffeta, or beaded number. As for accessories, choose a dramatic necklace or dangling earrings, but never both. When in doubt,

Dress Code: Casual Chic Translation: A dress-up/dress-down hybrid. The safe bet: Pair a weekend staple with something glamorous. For example; jeans with a blouse and heeled boots or ornate flats. To look pulled together in jeans, stick to a deep indigo colour, a sophisticated pattern, or a saturated shade, like cobalt, oxblood, or emerald. The goal here is polished but not uptight. When it’s a girls night out or a dinner party, you can be more adventurous in a trendy jumpsuit or boldly printed trousers. If you are still not sure then go the extra mile. After all, being overdressed shows you put in some effort and that is always appreciated at any event. What a gentleman should wear: A tailored oxford shirt or bright coloured polo with chinos or good jeans (no rips) will work for you. Dress Code: Casual, come as you are. Translation: Do not really come as you are. The safe bet: Something you would put on for lunch with friends, perhaps nice jeans with a striped top and casual pumps. Your host is actually saying hey, we’re easy going, just come on by and don’t stress about it. Still, it’s worth putting on lip gloss and mascara, so you don’t look as if you just rolled out of bed, What a gentleman should wear: Everyday clothes that are clean, in good condition, and unwrinkled... but no gym clothes or jogging suit. Even come as you are requires a little effort gentlemen. So those are your basic dress codes and translations. Now let me give you a few little

helpful tips to get you through the festive season. If the invitation you have received offers no direction on the dress code, the surest way to find out is to ask the host what she is wearing. But if you don’t feel comfortable doing so, you’re going to have to play detective with other guests and their thoughts. It is always a good idea to compare notes with friends who are also going to the party and decide on a dress code between you. If the invitation is engraved, letter pressed, or embossed on nice card, the host is clearly spending time and money on the event. Acknowledge her efforts with a gown or a cocktail dress. If you have been invited to an annual event, it is often possible to check out what has

been photographed and documented online to give you a great insight into the expected dress code. The time of the event is also a good clue. But if it’s at a function suite or a restaurant, browse the website or take a field trip to see what you can learn about the venue and the type of events it holds. he Rolls-Royce Dawn is quite simply in a class of its own. No four-seat convertible offers this much luxury, poise and performance – and if you can afford the list price then its sky high running costs shouldn’t come as a concern either. As with any modern day Rolls Royce, you can personalise the exterior and interior details to your heart’s desire, with an almost infinite list of options designed to make each model unique. So much so that Rolls-Royce expects the average buyer to add around 60,000 euros worth of optional extras at the point of purchase. The Rolls-Royce Dawn is the brand’s most luxurious, most desirable, and most dynamic drop-top to date. It’s essentially a convertible version of the Wraith coupe, but with a list of updates longer than your arm. 46 OCIO magazine

It’s only the manufacturer’s third convertible in 50 years, tracing its ancestry back to the Rolls-Royce Cornice of 1966. There’s only one bodystyle, one engine and one trim, but that shouldn’t disappoint as every model comes loaded with a luxury kit. Being one of the biggest convertibles on sale means there’s plenty of space to stretch out inside and there is easily enough room for four adults. Both the driver and front-seat passenger get

armchair style seats, which are adjustable in an infinite number of directions. Unusually for a convertible, as much emphasis has been placed on rear seat passengers as it has on those travelling up front. Kneeroom is generous in all four seats, and even with the roof up, those sitting in the back will find there’s plenty of headroom too. Visibility with the roof up isn’t bad for such a big car, but lower the hood and you have a full 360-degree view of your surroundings. That long bonnet and tall grille make the Dawn quite challenging to park, though, but as most owners will have a chauffer to worry about that, anyway, it’s not much of a concern. So, about the price. Well, if you have to ask - you cant afford it! But in the interest of journalism I can tell you that you will need to set aside a cool quarter of a million pounds...and that’s without any extras! n

ince the beginning of time there have been some truly great singers and musical entertainers and Christmas seems to bring out the best in all of them. The likes of Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra come to mind as well as the modern day musical heroes like Michael Buble and Diana Krall whom have both enjoyed great succcess with Christmas albums. But one artist stands head and shoulders above the rest in terms of record sales with a Christmas album. According to the latest data and certifications of the Music Recording Industry, the Elvis Presley Christmas Album has out sold every other Christmas Album... and continues to do so. The album has sold over 13 million copies since its original release in 1957, making it the biggest-selling Christmas album of all time. The album has been re-issued and repackaged several times over, and continues to be a perennial festive bestseller. It sold three million copies upon its original release in 1957 but has sold more than ten million copies in the various forms it has been reissued in. It hit the number one spot in the charts in 1957 and remained there for four weeks. Released on October 15, 1957 (when Elvis was just 22 years old), it would be the first of two Christmas albums released by “The King of Rock & Roll.” The second, Elvis Sings the Wonderful World of Christmas, wasn’t released until the early 1970s. Interestingly, the biggest controversy regarding the Christmas album came from one of America’s most beloved composers. On the album, Elvis did a cover version of Irving Berlin’s classic White Christmas. At the time, White Christmas was the biggestselling record of all time. After hearing Elvis sing his song, Irving Berlin called for the song, and the entire album in fact, to be banned from radio airplay. He considered Elvis’ White Christmas to be a profane parody of his cherished Yuletide standard. In spite of the influence that Irving 56 OCIO magazine

The Ultimate Christmas Album Berlin had at the time, most U.S. radio stations ignored his request and the album continued to get massive radio coverage. Controversy aside, one listens to this delightful album nowadays and wonders, “Why all the fuss?” Elvis is so obviously sincere in his Gospel renditions of ‘There’ll Be Peace in the Valley For Me,’ ‘Take My Hand Precious Lord’ and ‘I Believe’, one can only wonder about anyone questioning the album and the singer’s religious sincerity. Elvis does his version of two lovely Christmas carols, ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’ and ‘Silent Night’ in similarly fervent renditions. Naturally, the album was to include a little Christmas Rock & Roll and there are two great early original Elvis Christmas rockers with ‘Santa Bring My Baby Back To Me’ and ‘Santa Claus is Back In Town’. We look back now, and listen, to this 1957 version of Elvis Presley. Who could ever imagine the life he would lead in the next twenty years? This slim, fresh-looking,

El segundo de ellos, ‘Elvis Sings the Wonderful World of Christmas’, no sería publicado hasta principios de los setenta. Why is beef from Argentina so good?

t is generally accepted that beef from Argentinia is the best in the world, but it begs the question of why is it? Well, I have done my research and it seems the answer is simple. Firstly the cows must be cared for and fed properly with natural food and secondly, it is all about the excellent preparation of the meat. Allow me to explain. The beef’s quality is derived from the grass the cattle feed on. Contrary to other countries, the majority of Argentine cows are raised eating luscious grass, principally in the humid pampas, the biggest beef producing region of the country, where open flat plains dominate the landscape. Grass has less saturated fats than grains and more of the healthy omega three fatty acids. And although production results of free roaming cows are harder to control than in feedlots, experts agree that natural conditions, in which the cows don’t consume antibiotics and growth hormones, are a principal factor in the final quality of the beef. 13 million head of cattle are prepared for consumption per year in Argentina and, although it is exported all over the world, the majority of the beef is consumed within the country. A typical menu will offer around a dozen different cuts of steak, from the leanest and most expensive, lomo (tenderloin), to the fatty flank (vacio) and cuadril (rump). The preparation of the meat is tried and tested and is a real artform with top chefs receiving celebrity status. The chef will usually season the beef with nothing more than a good quality salt. It may sound simple, but make no mistake, grilling the beef well is a skill. It is often considered by keen beef consumers that the meat should be barely cooked in order to enjoy the quality. Well, I have it on good authority that your own preference is not as important as what the chef recommends. As an example, I am generally keen to have my steak prepared rare but, during a recent visit to Fogon del

Pipe in Torre del Mar, owner and chef Mattias suggested to me that my chosen ‘Novillo steak’ should be cooked more in order for the fatty sinew throughout the meat to able to melt and become absorbed into the red meat. Having taken his advice I enjoyed what was quite possibly the finest steak I have ever eaten. My point is a good chef will know the meat better than you do, so ask for his advice, after all, he is the professional. Meanwhile, back in Argentina the traditional Sunday afternoon barbecue will be enjoyed in gardens all over the country, The BBQ will include strips of ribs (tira de asado), the rib cap (tapa de asado), and matambre, a thin cut that comes from just under the skin between the lower part of the ribs and the belly. All grilled over charcoal or wood. It is a real feast and will be enjoyed over many hours with family and friends. The top quality meat will often be accompanied by Argentinian red wine, which is also considered to be amongst the best in the world. To enjoy this fabulous combination, there is no need to visit Argentina as such, just call in to your favourite Argentinian Grill Restaurant and experience the quality and passion of Argentina. n

he landscape of the Costa del Sol has changed dramatically in recent years. The traditional and very typical and Mediterranean olive and almond trees have been replaced by the tropical avocado, mango and chirimoya (custard apple) trees. These newer crops have created a more colourful landscape and more life to the farmland, giving us a richness, variety and even an exotic touch to the area. Interestingly, this is the the only area in Europe growing these fruits. The proximity to the coast and the high humidity are excellent conditions to help the development of these crops. The first of these farms in the axarquia were established in the 1970s and 1980s thanks to some brave pioneers like “Xarki” and also to the efforts of “Finca La Mayora”, one of the most important research and development centers in the country. The Tropical Fruit Coast

Nowadays, there are more than 8000 hectares of farmland in this region and the most important companies in the fruit sector have their headquarters here, Trops, Montosa and Managú to name just a few. The Tropical fruit farming has now extended to the rest of the Costa del Sol with almost 90% of the local production of avocado and mango, being allocated for export around the world. As you probably know, avocado is consumed as a fresh fruit but also as the main ingredient in the famous “guacamole” which several

local companies produce on a large scale. Mango, known as the king of fruits, has many uses such as jam, chutney, dried fruit, drinks, juices etc. Day by day the demand of natural products is growing and here on the Costa del Sol and mangos and avocados are now also farmed organically in some areas. The industry is discovering more and more uses and health benefits to these fabulous fruits, but it is the taste of these fruits that is actually conquering the world. Los tradicionales y muy mediterráneos olivos y almendros han sido sustituidos por los árboles tropicales de aguacates, mangos y chirimoyas, dando más color y vida al paisaje local, aportando variedad, riqueza y un toque exótico al entorno, que es la única zona productora de estas frutas en Europa. deshidratado, licores… Día a día crece la demanda de los productos naturales y también se cultivan ahora en La Costa del Sol estos frutos para el mercado cultivo ecológico y biológico.
