No space for a pool?

Why not consider a spa!

P

icture the scene. A beautiful hot day, mid summer, siesta time in the shade of a palm tree and then a refreshing dip in the pool... what? No pool? For most people without a pool, the problem is either the lack of space or a building licence. If this is your situation too, then why not look at a Swimspa.

The advantages of a Swimspa over owning a pool are enormous. It requires very little space, it can be used all year round as it heats itself, you do not need a permit to install one, there are no messy construction issues to deal with and the running costs compared to an average swimming pool, are much less.

We spoke to Michael Kellough of TimeOut Spas, Nerja, to get some expert advice on the benefits of owning a Swimspa. Michael told us that the two major advantages of a Swimspa over a pool are that you don’t need a licence to install one and a Swimspa is heated so you can use it all year round which means when the grandchildren come at Christmas or Easter - they can use the pool. He continued to say that a Swimspa is a great addition to any home just like a pool and it can be installed in just one day.

Las ventajas de tener un Swimspa son enormes. Se requiere muy poco espacio,

Trapiche Tuesday Market Every Tuesday morning throughout the year, the village of Trapiche hosts a large colourful Country Market inside the fabulous grounds of Jardines del Trapiche. Locally grown produce and handicrafts are on sale alongside local traders offering their services and products to the many visitors that return week after week.

The Trapiche Market has a large free car park with room for hundreds of cars and entrance to the market is also free. Once inside there is a real variety of stalls to browse around and when the walking, talking and shopping gets too much, there are shaded areas with facilities for tea and coffee from the bar area along with wines, beers and hot food snacks. The interior section is fully air conditioned.

Cada martes por la mañana, durante todo el año, el pueblo de Trapiche ofrece un mercado dentro del fabuloso lugar de Jardines de Trapiche. Se venden productos locales y de artesanía, junto a empresarios locales, que ofrecen sus servicios y productos, a los muchos visitantes que vuelven cada semana. El mercado de Trapiche tiene un aparcamiento grande, gratuito, para cientos de coches. La entrada al mercado también es gratuita. Una vez dentro hay una gran variedad de puestos para ver y cuando ha tenido bastante de andar, hablar y comprar, se puede parar a tomar algo en una de las zonas con sombra donde ofrecen todo desde café y té hasta vinos, cervezas y tentempiés calientes. La zona interior esta climatizada.

Britain, the EU and the Bank Of England.

ith so much talk about Britain leaving the EU, many questions are being asked about the financial implications. Bank of England Governor Mark Carney continues to defend his view that Britain leaving the European Union would hit the country’s economy.

Carney said the Bank Of England would not assess the long-term implications of the referendum for the economy. But a vote for leaving the EU would deliver a short-term hit to growth and the value of the pound, and foreign investment would probably also diminish.

On inflation, Carney said consumer prices could be affected in various ways: There can be short term implications for activity in the United Kingdom and therefore more pressures on prices. There could be lower levels of activity because of the degree of uncertainty that could affect investment and household spending.

On the other hand, he said, a weaker pound could push up prices and therefore inflation.

Vetiver Grass used to fight erosion.

W

e are located in Sayalonga and we supply a unique grass known as Vetiver. It is used all over the world to halt erosion. It has many other uses.

Vetiver is sterile and noninvasive, propagated only by root separation. It has been endorsed by the Spanish Government since 2008 after extensive tests controlling erosion in the Murcia region.

Vetiver requires water until established in approximately 4 months. Vetiver grows to a height of 2m and has an enormous root system 3-4m deep building an underground wall.

Now is the best time to plant as in 4-6 months they will be ready for the winds and rains of autumn. Vetiver loves the heat of summer.

We used it as a windbreak for our newly planted Avocado trees. Vetiver improves the yields of all of our crops including citrus. The roots store water and bring up nutrients from deeper than the other trees can reach. Vetiver forms a symbiotic relationship with all trees.

Vetiver requiere agua hasta que se asiente, en aproximadamente 4 meses.

Crece hasta una altura de 2 m y tiene un asombroso sistema de raíces de 3-4 m

de profundidad, que constituye un muro subterráneo perimetral.

Ahora es el mejor momento para plantar, ya que Vetiver ama el calor del verano y en 4-6 meses estará listo para soportar los vientos y lluvias de otoño.

Lo usamos como una barrera contra el viento para nuestros aguacates recién plantados. Mejora los rendimientos de todos nuestros cultivos, incluyendo cítricos. Las raíces almacenan agua y absorben los nutrientes desde una profundidad imposible de alcanzar para el resto de árboles. Vetiver forma una relación simbiótica con todos los árboles.

here have been changes to animal welfare laws in Spain in recent years and it is now a criminal offence to hurt a domestic animal, with fines of up to 100,000 euros.

There are also a number of measures in place controlling the sale and purchase of a domestic pet. The seller needs to have a certificate of sale, proof that the animal has been microchipped and has an identity card, a vaccination book which has been signed by the animal’s vet and any pedigree documentation that is available.

The new owner will need to ensure that the animal has had a rabies vaccination and is obliged to keep up with all vaccinations and register the pet at the local town hall.

These measures are intended to ensure that only those pet owners who are prepared to make a commitment to taking care of the animal properly should have 24 OCIO magazine

uperfoods are real and they are incredibly effective if used correctly. To clarify, Superfoods are foods, mostly plant-based but also some fish and dairy, thought to be nutritionally dense and thus good for one’s health.

Jeep Wrangler T

his tough little utilitarian vehicle was born in a time of world strife at the request of the U.S. Army 70 years ago. It has since served man and soldier as saviour, workhorse, and recreational adventure vehicle for an incalculable amount of off-road enthusiasts.

General Dwight D. Eisenhower once said, “America could not have won World War II without it.” After its faithful service to the country, the postwar Jeep exploded in popularity with adventurers looking to explore the backroads and wild lands of America. The nimble and capable fourwheel vehicle was the perfect trail machine.

Initially the Jeep was designed as a dependable bare-bones all-terrain vehicle, and through a number of company owners the Jeep brand saw a number of models 46 OCIO magazine

ranging from spartan CJs to utility trucks and luxury SUVs. From its humble beginnings and hurried prewar creation by Bantam, Ford, and WillysOverland, the Jeep was transformed into a number of cherished and oddball designs.

Jeep had also spurred manufacturers such as Ford, GM and Land Rover to build their own utilitarian off-road vehicles.

After WWII, Willys-Overland immediately started marketing the civilian version of the Jeep MB, the CJ-2A. There were a number of differences in the civilian version of the war hero. A few of the most notable changes were that the Jeep now had a tailgate, the spare tire was moved to the right side, and the gearing was changed for low-gear offroad torque.

Love them or hate them, this famous little

Jeep is now considered as American as apple pie. It has spawned numerous Jeep models, Jeepsters, wagons, trucks, and cars. The Jeep Wrangler is sold all over the world and still, after so many years in production, it is a sought after vehicle with many classic models still in use.

ordoba is a faithful reflection of the powerful civilisations that have settled there. Romans, Moors, Jews and Christians have all left a deep mark on its heritage, culture, traditions and customs.

The city of Cordoba boasts a wealth of cultural and monumental heritage bequeathed to it by the different civilisations that have settled here. In 1994 UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) recognised the universal importance of its historical patrimony and extended the World Heritage Site to include not only the Mosque but also its surrounding urban area.

The cuisine of Cordoba is the result of a long tradition which can be seen in the variety of its dishes, the huge number of restaurants, taverns and bars all over the city and in the prestige which it enjoys on a national level. The different people and civilisations which passed through Cordoba also left their mark on the local cuisine. The

Romans introduced the use of olive oil, which is widely used and highly-prized in this area, and set the norm for what would later become known as Mediterranean cuisine.

The Arab influence, too, can be seen in the use of nuts and dried fruit, vegetables, in the mixture of sweet and sour flavours and finally in cakes and sweets, which were also influenced by Jewish culinary traditions.

The arrival of the Christians brought an increased use of meat as well as maintaining the best culinary traditions from the cultures previous to the conquest.

The Cordoba Fair is held each year at the end of May, to mark the feast of Our Lady of la Salud (Health). The special fairground in el Arenal is very easy to get to. Horseback riders, men and women can often be seen in traditional attire, particularly in the u

casetas (individual enclosures belonging to each association) which are laid out in orderly rows in the different streets of the fairground. All the casetas are public, and the doors are open for visitors to enter and enjoy the hospitality.

La ciudad de Córdoba presume de una riqueza de herencia cultural monumental, heredada de las diferentes civilizaciones que se asentaron aquí. Parte del legado histórico de Córdoba es el gran número de plazas, callejuelas y otros sitios únicos que hacen de la ciudad una especie de museo exterior. Una calle detrás de otra, todas decoradas con rejas de hierro forjado en las ventanas, balcones, fuentes y jardines pequeños la hacen el lugar ideal para un paseo relajante y revelan muchos de los misterios de la Córdoba de hoy en dia.

La cocina de Córdoba es el resultdo de una larga tradición que puede verse en la variedad de sus platos, el gran número de restaurantes, tabernas y bares en toda la ciudad y en el prestigio que disfruta a nivel nacional. La gente y civilizaciones diferentes que pasaron por Córdoba también dejaron su marca en la cocina local. Los Romanos introdujeron el uso del aceite de oliva, que es ahora muy usado y altamente reconocido en esta área, y establecieron las pautas para lo que sería después conocida como la cocina Mediterránea.

La influencia Árabe, también, puede ser vista

en el uso de nueces y fruta seca, vegetales, en el uso de la mezcla de sabores dulces y agrios y finalmente, en las tartas y dulces, los cuales también fueron influenciados por las tradiciones culinarias Judías.

La llegada de los Cristianos trajo un incremento en el uso de la carne pero también el mantenimiento de las mejores tradiciones culinarias de las culturas previas a la conquista.

La Feria de Córdoba tiene lugar cada año a fines de Mayo para marcar la festividad de Nuestra Señora de la Salúd (Our Lady of Health). El campo ferial especial en el Arenal es de fácil acceso. Hombres y mujeres a caballo son vistos a menudo en tradicionales atuendos, particularmente en las casetas (pertenecientes individualmente a cada asociación participante), las cuales están distribuídas en filas ordenadas en las diferentes calles del campo ferial. Todas las casetas son públicas y las puertas están abiertas para que los visitantes entren y disfruten de su hospitalidad.

A

nyone that has visited Nerja on a regular basis has most certainly experienced the lovely Burriana beach, which has seen many changes over the years. It all started as a quiet and secluded beach with just one or two restaurants but now it is home to many international restaurants, cafe bars, shops and leisure facilities.

As night falls and the cocktail hour begins, Burriana Beach remains a hive of activity with the smartly dressed evening crowd filling the bars and restaurants.

The beach itself is a safe sandy arc of a bay with plenty of sunbeds available, lots of toilets and showers and is very clean. It has been a regular recipient of the prestigious ‘Blue Flag’ of excellence, awarded by the European Union, and the ‘Q for Quality’ flag issued by the Spanish authorities u

ualquiera que haya visitado Nerja de forma regular, sin duda alguna ha podido disfrutar de la encantadora playa de Burriana. Esta playa ha vivido numerosos cambios a lo largo de los años. De una playa tranquila y aislada, con sólo uno o dos restaurantes, a ser el hogar de muchos restaurantes internacionales, bares, cafeterías, tiendas y zonas de ocio.

A medida que cae la noche y comienza la hora del cóctel, la playa de Burriana es un hervidero, con multitud de elegantes vestidos de noche llenando bares y restaurantes.

La playa en sí es un arco de arena protegido en una bahía, con abundante tumbonas disponibles, un montón de baños y duchas y está muy limpia. Distinguida cada año con la prestigiosa bandera azul de la Unión Europea, en el 2004 se le otorgó la ‘Q de Calidad Turística en Playas’ emitida por las

autoridades españolas, certificado que conserva actualmente.

Con el paso de los años, la popularidad de la playa de Burriana ha ido aumentando, y aparcar el coche ha sido a menudo un problema. Pero esto se ha solucionado con la apertura del aparcamiento subterráneo, en la cuesta que baja de la Avenida de Pescia a la playa.

La playa de Burriana ha ofrecido siempre una amplia y variada selección de opciones para comer, con bares y restaurantes que ofrecen cocina de todos los confines del mundo.

Como visitantes habituales de la playa de Burriana podemos recomendar especialmente algunos.

Well, that problem has now eased with the opening of a large car park, located on the steep road down to the beach from Avenida de Pescia.

Burriana Beach has always offered a wide and varied choice of eating options with bars and restaurants offering cuisine from around the world.

As regular visitors to Burriana Beach we can recommend a few special ones. Let’s start with Merendero Moreno. Merendero Moreno offers a great beachside location in which to enjoy delicious fresh food in stunning surroundings. The speciality here is the beachside barbecue cooking meat and fish to your exact requirements. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and successfully create a very nice ambience in which to dine and enjoy yourselves whether it be for snacks, lunch, dinner or 62 OCIO magazine

Staying beachside, we would like to introduce you to Merendero La Barca.

Established in 1967 it is easily identified by the bright orange awnings. This delightful beachside restaurant is a firm favourite with many visitors and locals alike. Offering a classic beachside menu, the kitchen offers fresh produce on a daily basis, cooked to perfection and served in the most relaxing and enjoyable of surroundings.

Set back slightly from the beach, but still with extensive views of the beach and mediterranean is La Traiña Restaurante & Bar. This friendly and welcoming venue is everything you need to quench your thirst during a busy day on the beach. Why not relax on the terrace and enjoy the views.

If hunger strikes, the fish, seafood, rice dishes and meats cooked on the barbecue are nothng short of spectacular.

Siguiendo junto a la playa, descubrimos el Merendero La Barca. Fundado en 1967, se identifica fácilmente por los toldos naranja brillante. Este encantador chiringuito es uno de los favoritos para turistas y residentes por igual. Ofreciendo el clásico menú de chiringuito, la cocina ofrece diariamente productos frescos, cocinados a la perfección y servidos en el más relajante y apacible de los ambientes.

Situado un poco más atrás, pero aun así con amplias vistas a la playa y el Mediterráneo, está La Traiña Restaurante & Bar.
