Semana Santa ...Spain’s holy week, complete with tradition, music, culture, theatre and religion.

Andrew Harcourt tell us more about this impotant time in the yearly calender

R

ealmente una de las celebraciones más impresionantes de España, la Semana Santa es una muestra única de tradición, música, cultura, teatro y religión. Y como ocurre con cualquier otra celebración cultural, la detallada Semana Santa española fue durante siglos un trabajo en progreso. El punto de comienzo de su extensa historia es claramente la muerte de Cristo, de donde procede su temática, aunque la celebración que vemos hoy día es el resultado de siglos de evolución.

La festividad, jubilosa en Andalucía y Sevilla y hasta cierto punto solemne en el resto de España, se define prácticamente por sus increíbles procesiones. Cada una de estas procesiones típicamente alardea con dos tronos intensamente adornados, uno con la Virgen María y el otro con una escena de la Pasión de Cristo. Admira la esplendida decoración de estas increíbles creaciones mientras pasan lentamente por delante de ti acompañadas por la música de los clarinetes y tambores; es difícil hacerlo sin escalofríos.

Debes fijarte especialmente en que estos tronos son increíblemente pesados, especialmente en Andalucía que es la región más extravagante para la Semana Santa.

pero como la procesión dura muchas horas, hasta ellos sienten el dolor. Se dice que la experiencia de este sufrimiento es semejante a lo que sufrió Cristo y los hombres (conocidos como costaleros) consideran que es un gran honor llevar el trono a pesar (y sobretodo por) el dolor que supone.

Debajo de cada trono, apenas puedes ver filas y filas de pies. Hay hasta cuarenta hombres que sacan el trono a hombros y controlan el movimiento de balanceo del trono. De hecho, practican tanto y están tan sincronizados entre ellos que las figuras realistas que están encima parecen un poco fantasmagórico como si estuvieran andando al sonido de la música. Imposible de perderse son las

aparentemente interminables filas de nazarenos andando descalzos, lo cual es bastante impresionante si tenemos en cuenta que algunas de las procesiones duran hasta ¡14 horas! Ah y que no te despiste el parecido que hay entre las capuchas puntiagudas y las largas túnicas de los nazarenos y las del Ku Klux Klan; es coincidencia y no tiene ninguna relación.

Sin duda, la Semana Santa Española es impresionante pero eso no significa que tengas que ser especialmente devoto para disfrutar de este tiempo aquí. La gente sale para seguir o ver los tronos y las procesiones, tomar algo y a lo mejor comer algo también, incluso para los que no son religiosos es un día estupendo para salir. Y nadie te va a obligar a ver la procesión entera. Cuando flaquees ve a tomar algo y vuelve o sigue la procesión en la dirección opuesta.

Finalmente, que no te sorprenda ver que bien viste la gente para ir a ver las procesiones, especialmente durante la segunda mitad de la semana. Las mujeres a menudo visten para impresionar mientras que muchos hombres hacen frente al sol vestidos con sus trajes. Por supuesto no todo el mundo se arregla tanto pero básicamente si quieres integrarte en las procesiones por lo menos no te pongas la camiseta que llevas cuando limpias el coche. n

ruly one of Spain’s most breathtaking celebrations, Semana Santa is a one-of-a-kind display of tradition, music, culture, theatre and religion. And, as with any cultural celebration, Spain’s elaborate Semana Santa was for centuries a work-in-progress.

The starting point for its extensive history is clearly the death of Christ, from which it takes its subject, however the celebration that we see today is the result of centuries of evolution.

The holiday, jubilant in Andalusía and Seville and to a degree solemn elsewhere in Spain, is practically defined by its stunning processions. Each of these processions typically boasts two intensely adorned floats, one of the Virgin Mary and the other of a scene from Christ’s Passion.

Take in the lavish decoration of these incredible creations as they slowly pass before you accompanied by the music of coronets and drums; its hard to do without getting chills. You should take special note that these floats are incredibly heavy, especially so here in Andalusía, which is the most extravagant region for Semana Santa. Strong men carry the floats, but with the procession lasting many hours, even they will feel the pain. The suffering experienced is said to be likened to that

experienced by Christ and the men (known as costaleros) consider it a great honour to carry the float, despite (and indeed, because of) the pain involved.

Underneath each float, you’ll just barely be able to make out rows and rows of feet. There are up to forty men who haul the float on shoulders and control the swaying motion of the float. In fact, they practice so much and are so in sync with each other that the realistic figures on top look eerily as if they were walking along to the music. Impossible to miss are the seemingly endless rows of nazarenos, or penitents, who walk along with the float.. You may even see many nazarenos walking barefoot, which is pretty impressive considering some of the processions last up to 14 hours! Oh and don’t be thrown off by the resemblance between the pointy hoods and long robes of the nazarenos and those of the Ku Klux Klan;

it’s coincidental and completely unrelated.

Without doubt, Spanish Holy Week is impressive, but that does not mean you have to be especially devout to enjoy this time of year here. People come out to follow or watch the floats and processions, have a drink and maybe a meal as well – even for the non religious it is a fabulous day out. And no-one is going to oblige you to watch the whole of a procession. When you flag, go for a drink and return, or follow the procession in reverse direction.

Finally, don’t be surprised to see how nicely the people dress to watch the processions, especially during the second half of the week. Women often dress to impress while many men brave the sun in full suits. Of course not everybody dresses up so much, but basically if you want to fit in watching the processions, just don’t wear the t-shirt you wear when you clean the car. n OCIO magazine

Phantom

by Jo Nesbo About the book: I was not familiar with earlier Harry Hole works, however Jo Nesbo pens such a brilliant character I was just as attached to the character as a die hard fan would be as Harry’s past is explained seamlessly through the ongoing plot.

The story revolves around the death of a ‘Gusto’ a local junkie that the cops don’t care much for, but was friends with Harry’s son (cue personal vendetta, against the entire drug trade of Olso City).

Nesbo adopts an interesting point of view and gives us Gusto’s dying thoughts, along with Harry’s real-time investigation and interestingly I found Gusto’s brutal narrative one of the more compelling aspects of the story. Nesbo also skilfully dances around with the 3rd person perspective creating a dynamic narrative.

Twists abound in this gritty, painful tale, so hold onto something as you chew your nails off experiencing one of the must-read thrillers of 2012.

he barter system is an old system making a strong comeback. It may seem like a blast from the past but an old system of getting what you want without having to pay cash is back and is being welcomed with open arms.

These days bartering is done through a network or organisation that brings people together and manages the transactions between them.

Club Barter (English & Spanish speaking) based in Torre del Mar, is one such organisation. Set up only a few short months ago, already the club has in excess of 50 members in the local area including some very well known, respected and influential businesses along the coast and inland.

The Club Barter concept is simple and basically allows for each member to trade their products or services, at full market value, to another member in exchange for credit to spend with any other member within the club. It is just like creating a new currency.

‘The little site with the big heart’

A

round 6 months ago, I wanted to locate a specific item, namely a pair of second hand, reference audio speakers. I tried all the usual places with absolutely no luck.

I reasoned that perhaps other people, were looking to buy or sell second hand items as well. So I decided to open a “Facebook” group. That was how the Axarquia Online Car Boot and Wanted Stuff, group was conceived. Much to my surprise (and pleasure), It was an almost instant success. People began signing up thick and fast; We were soon selling everything imaginable, plus a few items I would never have imagined (lol).

Quite a few members, began asking if they could make a donation to the site. I had long been concerned, at the number of homeless animals wandering the area, most of which, were unkempt and painfully thin. Here was my chance to do something about it! I spoke to Wendy at “The English Shop” (in Puente Don Manuel), who kindly agreed, to host our first Donation Tin. Now 3 months later, we have approx 15 donation tins, in various locations.

It was not very long before I formed The “Axarquia Online Animal Rescue/Rehoming Group. This is where we advertise all the animals that need fostering or rehoming. It’s core membership is a small dedicated group, passionate about animals in general, & dogs in particular. So far we are helping to support around 60-70 animals the majority of which are in medium to long term foster homes. Sadly, almost every day sees us faced with more requests for help, so we are desperately in need of more people willing and able, to adopt or foster.

We are now in the process of forming an Association, with five very active, dedicated committee members. We are always looking for new ideas to raise awareness and funds.

On 25th March We had a Car Boot Sale & Fund Raising Day at Restaurant Ortegas.This was our first fund raising event and was a great success with “The English Rose” singing live, numerous raffle prizes donated by local businesses and around 20 stalls.

We are looking forward to our next event in the near future so keep an eye on facebook for details.

Last month I focussed entirely on the colour yellow, a theme that will dominate the stores this coming season. To elaborate a little further on the Spring season, let us look towards the heavenly fabrics that you will find yourself wrapped in, adorned with fabulous vivid colours (including yellow of course), as well as soft neutrals.

And once again we can look forward to seeing lots of lace and floral prints in the high street store windows.

In contrast to the vivid colours all around, once again black and white fashions defy time and keep their well earned place as big colours for the season ahead.

On the catwalks this season most fashion designers showed black and white in some form or another. Let’s face it, you simply can’t go wrong with the traditional black and white outfit. The designers know this little secret and continue to cash in on it. If you can team the strong black and white with some bright colours you will be right on trend In terms of general style this Spring, there is a strong nod to a tailored and classic look but with a touch of edgy boldness. Think bright colours, vivid prints and stripes served up with a large helping of style.

Once again local businesses in Torre del Mar put on a fabulous fashion show along Calle del Mar, attracting a very large crowd as usual who gathered to watch the beautiful models show off collections from several local boutiques and designers.

Seating was laid out along alongside the long blue catwalk carpet which stretched the length of Calle del Mar. Bright lights and music filled the night air as the many visitors enjoyed the spectacular fashion show.

Una vez más, algunos comercios de Torre del Mar organizaron un increíble desfile de moda que recorrió la Calle del Mar, y que como siempre, atrajo a un amplio público que asistió para ver a las bellas modelos desfilar con las nuevas propuestas de algunos diseñadores y boutiques locales. Las filas de sillas enmarcaban la alfombra azul sobre la que desfilaban las modelos. El desfile, contó además con música e iluminación, y gozó de un agradable ambiente gracias a la presencia de los asistentes.

As the summer months approach, thoughts turn to warmer days and balmy nights, which means less clothes and more flesh on display. Follow health guru Claudia Corral’s 4 simple tips to get you ready for summertime

’m not one to want to throw you into a state of panic but I am sure you are all fully aware that it is just a few months until summer is in full force.

The Mercury will rise and the chilly breezes will disappear and you will need to dust off your bikini and swim shorts and bare your soul to the outside world. If you’re like so many of us that seem to accumulate a few extra pounds in the winter months, it’s time to think about returning to your summertime shape, yes, I am talking to you guys as well!

Tip No 1: Get Moving, by any means necessary.

For your health and for the sake of your body it’s important to leap into spring with enthusiasm. If you’re not into the gym, there are loads of interesting and motivating ways to keep in shape whilst enjoying the fabulous scenery. Why not sign up for an outdoor fitness club or grab a friend and arrange a beach run or simply dust off the bicycle and go for a long ride 28 OCIO magazine

along the beachfront or even inland and try a little cycle off road if you are up to the challenge. The point is to exercise, any exercise. You can start by not taking the lift in your apartment block and walk the stairs everyday instead. Movement is exercise and exercise means a great looking body for the beach.

Tip No 2: Cut back on salt If you have a particular body baring event soon, cut back on the salt. Sodium encourages the body to retain water, thus making the body bloat. You’ll be amazed by how much less puffy you look and feel after a couple of days without salt - try it.

Tip No 3: H2Go Perhaps the most important health decision you can make on the way into summer is to drink your six to eight glasses of water a day. It will flush out toxins and help eradicate the evil sodium we’ve just mentioned. It will keep you hydrated as the temperature rises and, what is more, water will soften any lines on your face by

keeping the skin moist from the inside. So lots of water every day.

Tip No 4: Get a spray tan OK, it’s not a health tip, but it will make you look and feel more healthy. A spray tan will disguise any cellulite or sagging skin and make you look easily five pounds lighter, it’s a must have for any beach affair - and much easier than working on a real tan if you don’t have the time to dedicate to it. n

O desempolvar la bicicleta y dar un largo paseo por la orilla de la playa. Incluso si te apetece un desafío, puedes intentar recorrer un trayecto corto en bicicleta. El objetivo es hacer ejercicio, de cualquier forma. Puedes empezar subiendo las escaleras, en lugar de coger el ascensor del bloque de tu piso. El movimiento es ejercicio y el ejercicio se traduce en un cuerpo que lucirá bonito en la playa.

Consejo No 4: Compra bronceador.

Conforme se acercan los meses de verano, pensamos en días más calurosos y noches más cálidas, lo que supone que llevemos menos ropa y más carne a la vista.

Solar energy has become a good investment.

The arguments for the using solar energy were until recently of environmental character more than economic. The consumer had to make investments in solar systems (many times not very good ones) in a world with low energy prices. The return was low and the payback period on the investment was too long, often longer than the lifespan of the solar system. This situation has changed. Solar systems are better and the energy prices have risen sharply. Now, we can make positive economic calculations. A hot water system can be amortized over 5-10 years with current prices and less with the expected increases.

Celebrate If you are new to Spain, you may be interested to know that celebrations here are a little different to other parts of Europe, with a big emphasis on the party that follows any event.

I

f you are new to Spain or perhaps here on holiday, you may be interested to know that celebrations here in Spain are a little different to other parts of Europe. The Spanish have a reputation for knowing how to enjoy a party and, when it comes to a really special occasion, the Spanish do it beter than anyone else.

Lets start with birthdays. Birthdays are pretty low-key events in Spain – not like in the UK where it’s something to look forward to all year round and people have big parties for landmark birthdays such as 18, 40 and 60. I suppose one advantage of being in Spain is that if you’re 40 or 50, people don’t make a huge fuss about it.

Also, the Spanish don’t really send cards, I think you can tell that from the selection of cards on sale at some shops. And don’t expect piles of presents either. Close relatives might give presents, but these will probably be small and again, low-key, unless of course you have a party in which case most guests will bring along a gift of some sort.

church, most parents have their children christened and most children take their first communion. Christenings are usually pretty big affairs with friends and relatives.

Children are christened quite young, at about three months in most cases and have one godfather and one godmother. If you are asked to be a godparent, consider this to be a huge privilege, but be aware that this means you’re committed to a lifetime of expensive birthday and Christmas presents.

And what about first communions? In spring, clothes shops are full of outfits and go to any restaurant in May or June on a Saturday and your meal takes second place to a child’s first communion celebrations. First communions are huge events and families can easily spend more than �2,500 euros per child. The religious ceremony isn’t always that important for many children and their families but the celebration is always of vital importance.

Formal photos are taken of the child and the best one is put in pride of place in the parents’ home forever afterwards. If you’re invited, you need to spend at least 40 to 50 euros on the present, more if you’re a close friend or relative. Seeing the piles of

presents at first communions is a bit like being in a toy shop and most children like to joke that they only take their first communion just so they can get the presents.

Weddings are naturally major events and families can easily spend in the region of 30,000 euros on them. Expect a big celebration, at least 100 guests is normal and set aside a whole weekend for partying and recovering. Dress is usually formal and most people will really dress up for a wedding, some more successfully than others, but all will go to the hairdressers beforehand and will be immaculately groomed for sure.

Should you be invited to a wedding, etiquette says you should spend at least as much as the cost of your meal on a present, so that’s at least �50 euros, twice as much if you’re a couple.

The ceremony is pretty similar to other countries with many of the same traditions and of course, everyone looks forward to the party. One particular difference with a Spanish wedding reception is that there are no speeches. Guests just get straight down to dancing and drinking the night away...literally. n

anto si eres un nuevo residente en España, como si estás de vacaciones, quizá quieras saber que las celebraciones españolas son algo diferentes a las que podemos encontrar en otras partes de Europa.

Los españoles tienen fama de disfrutar de las fiestas, y cuando de verdad llega una ocasión especial, los españoles la celebran mejor que nadie.

Comencemos por las fiestas de cumpleaños. Las fiestas de cumpleaños son algo de poca importancia en España, a diferencia de las fiestas de cumpleaños inglesas, ya que en Inglaterra, estas celebraciones son algo muy esperado durante todo el año. Hay quienes incluso, organizan grandes fiestas de cumpleaños en la celebración de edades simbólicas, como son los 18, los 40 y los 60 años.

Supongo, que una de las ventajas de estar en España, es que la gente no le da tanta importancia a los cumpleaños, sobre todo, si ya tienes entre 40 y 50 años.

Además, los españoles tampoco son de mandar tarjetas de cumpleaños, aunque en algunas tiendas puedes encontrar una pequeña selección. Tampoco esperes

muchos regalos, pues algunos familiares cercanos quizá te obsequien con un regalo, pero de seguro será algo pequeño y barato, a no ser que organices una fiesta en casa y los invitados te traigan algún detalle.

La Iglesia española está preocupada por el descenso en el número de fieles, pero aunque la mayoría de la gente no vaya a la Iglesia, casi todos los padres bautizan a sus hijos y la mayor parte de los niños hace la Primera Comunión.

Los bautizos suelen ser eventos muy importantes a los que acuden familiares y amigos.

Los niños se bautizan cuando son muy pequeños, sobre los tres meses de vida en la mayoría de casos, y tienen una madrina y un padrino, algo que se considera de gran privilegio, pero que significa que estás condenado a comprar regalos caros todos los cumpleaños y navidades. ¿Y las comuniones? En primavera, las tiendas se llenan de vestidos y trajes, y si vas a un restaurante cualquier sábado de mayo o junio, seguro que tu plato vendrá después de que hayan servido la comida de la comunión del niño que lo esté

celebrando en el mismo restaurante.

La Primera Comunión es un gran enormes evento familiar en el que, fácilmente, se gasta 2.500 � por niño. La ceremonia litúrgica en sí no, es tan importante para el niño o la familia como lo es la celebración que viene después.

Se somete al niño a una sesión de fotos profesional, y después, la mejor foto lucirá en el salón familiar por siempre jamás. Si estás invitado al evento, deberás gastarte como mínimo 40� o 50� en el regalo del niño, o incluso más, si se trata de un familiar cercano. Entre tantos regalos, los niños parecen estar en una tienda de juguetes. De hecho, algunos niños bromean diciendo que sólo hacen la primera comunión para recibir muchos regalos.

Las bodas, naturalmente, son eventos mucho más importantes, y las familias se pueden gastar fácilmente unos 30.000�.

Por ello, te encontrarás ante una gran celebración, a la que asistirán menos 100 invitados que normalmente descansarán todo un fin de semana para poder recuperarse de la gran fiesta. La vestimenta suele ser muy formal, los invitados se vestirán para la ocasión, algunos con más gracia que otros, pero seguro que todos habrán ido a la peluquería a peinarse.

Si te invitan a una boda, el protocolo dice que debes gastarte en el regalo la misma cantidad de dinero que cuesta el cubierto, que suponen más de 50�, o el doble, si acudes con tu pareja.

La ceremonia de boda es muy parecida a la de otros países que cuentan con las mismas tradiciones. Todo el mundo espera con ansia que llegue el momento de la celebración. Una de las diferencias entre las bodas españolas y otras bodas europeas, es que las españolas no incorporan ningún discurso, sino que los invitados directamente comerán y beberán n hasta altas horas de la madrugada.

omo todos sabemos, la Semana Santa es un tributo a la Resurrección de Jesucristo, la cual consiste en muchos acontecimientos importantes.

El Jueves Santo conmemora la Ultima Cena cuando Cristo profetizó su final y resurrección y repartió el vino y el pan como su cuerpo y sangre respectivamente.

El Viernes Santo conmemora el día de la crucifixión de Cristo y la Semana Santa culmina con el Domingo Santo día en que se celebra su Resurrección.

Para muchos esto es Semana Santa pero para otros es más que una fiesta religiosa ya que representa el comienzo de la primavera. Es un tiempo de dejar el invierno y aventurarse al exterior para celebrar la

vida.

Es también una oportunidad para que los familiares y amigos se reúnan para beber, comer y disfrutar de la vida en general después de los fríos y oscuros días del invierno.

En este momento del año en la mayoría de las mesas del mundo cristiano se encuentra el humilde cordero. En siglos pasados, encontrarse con un cordero era una señal de suerte, especialmente en tiempo de Semana Santa. Según la superstición popular, el diablo podía tomar la forma de cualquier animal, pero no se le permitía tomar la forma del cordero por su simbolismo religioso.

En el siglo séptimo, los monjes benedictinos escribieron un rezo para la bendición de los u

corderos. Algunos cientos de años más tarde, el Papa hizo que el cordero entero asado fuese una parte importante de la cena de Semana Santa del Papa y así lo ha seguido siendo desde entonces.

No hace muchos años, la gente decidió que no era malo asar sólo algunas partes del cordero en vez del cordero completo, dando la oportunidad de introducirse en el espíritu de ese momento tan especial del año pero quizás con un toque moderno de barbacoa.

Como se trata de un tiempo de celebración, muchas familias se reúnen en sus restaurantes favoritos para celebrar del buen ambiente y la buena comida y para mí, esto es lo mejor de la Semana Santa. Estupenda comida, buen vino, familia y amigos. n

s we all know the Easter festival is a tribute to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The holy week consisting of many important events that lead up to Easter. The Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper, when the Christ prophesied his end and his resurrection and distributed bread and wine as his flesh and blood, respectively.

The auspicious day of Good Friday commemorates the day of Crucifixion of Christ, and the Holy Week culminates with Easter Sunday, which is celebrated as the day of his Resurrection. To many this is Easter, full stop, but to others, Easter is so much more than a religious festival as it heralds the advent of the spring season.

It is a time to shake off winter and once

again venture out into the great outdoors to celebrate life in it’s early bloom. It is a chance for family and friends to reunite to enjoy each others company, to drink, dine and generally enjoy life after the dark cold winter months.

On most dinner tables around the Christian world at this time of year is the humble lamb. In past centuries it was considered a lucky omen to come across a lamb, especially at Easter time. It was a popular superstition that the devil, who could take the form of all other animals, was never allowed to appear in the shape of a lamb because of its religious symbolism.

And in the 7th century the Benedictine monks wrote a prayer for the blessing of lambs. A few hundred years later the pope adopted it and a whole roasted lamb became the feature of the Pope’s Easter Dinner, and has been ever since.

It wasn’t too many years before people decided that it was ok to roast parts of a lamb instead of the whole lamb, creating the opportunity to enter the spirit of the festival but perhaps with a modern day twist of a barbecue.� As it is a time of celebration, many families will gather around the dinner table of their favourite restaurant to enjoy the ambience and fine cuisine and to me, this is Easter at it’s very best. mong the many underappreciated wines is Tempranillo, a lovely Spanish red that lends itself to pairing with many foods, from Spanish tapas and paella to Moroccan lamb tajine and strong flavoured roasted meats, like roast lamb for example, the meat of choice for the Easter table.

Tempranillo is one of the best wines from the Rioja region of Spain, and can be the main component of red wines labeled Rioja. It is often blended with other varieties like Garnache, Graciano, or Cabernet sauvignon.

Tempranillo is often described as a “foodfriendly” wine because its balance of medium to strong tannins and low acidity complements so many flavours, making it a good pairing with a variety of cuisines.

Si va a comprar por los alrededores, debería ser capaz de encontrar algunos Tempranillo o Rioja, a precios muy razonables. Lógicamente, preferirá la selección realizada aquí en España, pero en otras partes del mundo, la mesa a la hora de comer cuenta a menudo, con un vino Tempranillo, de Australia o quizás de California.

Ingredientes:

Elaboracion: (para 2 personas)

680gr de tomate pera o maduro 2 dientes de ajo 125 gr pan cateto 35 vinagre blanco 50 gr aceite oliva 80 gr de jamón 2 huevos duros 1 lata de ventresca de atún perejil y aceite girasol soja crema de balsámico

En un bol ( cubo olla, etc...) pondremos los tomates, ajos, sal y el pan empapado con el vinagre y lo batiremos todo hasta crear una masa homogénea que pasaremos por el xino para conseguir la textura deseada (con Thermomix se tardarían 7 minutos a velocidad 10).

Terminado este paso, añadiremos el aceite y batiremos medio minuto.

Guardar en refrigerado.

Para conseguir el aceite verde, en un vaso de batidora, pondremos hasta mediacion de perejil fresco; iremos añadiéndole aceite de girasol hasta la mitad de la cantidad de perejil.

Batirlo todo hasta conseguir homogeneidad.

Siempre quedará genial. Un truco para cocer bien los huevos y que queden en su punto es meterlos en el agua justo cuando ésta rompa a hervir; sólamente habrá que dejarlos 9 minutos y medio para que queden para chuparse los dedos.

Preparation: (2 Persons)

680 gr of ripe tomatoes 2 cloves of garlic 125 gr of bread 35 ml of Wine vinegar 80 gr of cured ham 2 hard-boiled eggs 1 can tinned tuna Parsley and sunflower oil soya balsamic cream

Put into a bowl the tomatoes, garlic, soya and the bread soaked with the wine vinegar. After this, whisk it all up until it reaches a paste. Pass the paste through a sieve to get the desired texture.

Now add the oil and whisk again for about 30 seconds. Place the bowl in the fridge before serving.

GREEN OIL: Half fill a glass with the parsley, then add the oil (a quarter part of the glass), then whisk until you have a nice liquid testure.

PRESENTATION: Like it is in the photo is perfect, but of course you can add your own style to the dish as you desire

can hear the comments already: “For 200,000 euros (give or take) I’d buy two GT-Rs!” Well, you could, but you still wouldn’t have a single 2012 Bentley Continental GTC now would you.

What most people don’t understand about Bentley customers is that price isn’t an issue...at all. The Bentley buyers aren’t deciding which 200,000 euros car to buy, they’re deciding which mansion to put their new 200,000 euros car in. Some owners I am sure match their car’s colour to the colour scheme of the yacht that carries it and them to exotic ports around the world.

In short, Bentley owners don’t care that you think they should have bought a GT-R or an Aston Martin or even a fully stocked ice cream van because, odds are, they already own one of those and any other car you think is better and cheaper.

This is why Bentley doesn’t really consider any other manufacturer a competitor. For the coachbuilders from Crewe, it isn’t about going head-to-head with another manufacturer; it’s about building something so incredible that it gets the attention of a 64 OCIO magazine

person with unlimited funds and not enough time to spend them.

While I tested the Bentley like any other car, it is difficult to compare the Continental GTC to anything else. After all, how many 5500-pound sports touring convertibles are there? A road test is, to be honest, nothing more than a joy for me because even before you get into the car you know what to expect because it’s a Bentley and it’s about as good as it gets. As with all Bentley vehicles you get exactly what you would expect to get. However, in the interest of professional journalism I must report on something other than it’s simply fantastic. So lets have a chat about the power. The 6.0 litre twin-turbo W12 engine is powerful beyond anything else you are likely to drive outside of a racetrack.

And not only at top speed, it is very fast out of the starting blocks, like a pharmaceutically enhanced Olympic sprinter. I personally experienced 0-60 in just 4.8 seconds and I would suggest that wasn’t even the maximum. And then once you hit the 60 mark it just keeps on pulling. The obvious problem with such speed of course is the

abilty to stop, which this monster does with equally impressive comfort and control.

I had the pleasure of driving the Continental GTC for a week straight, all along the Costa del Sol from Sotogrande to Malaga and inland through the many exclusive villages full of urbanisations and villas with post housing bust price tags roughly equal to that of the Bentley. Though the Bentley is without doubt one of the best cars you can buy at the price, if not the best, it’s difficult to comprehend that level of wealth. If I do ever achieve the status that allows me to wear a handmade wristwatch equal to the price tag of the car I currently own, a Bentley will, without a doubt, fill one of the spaces in the aircraft-hangar-turned-garage in one of my mansions...though I may not choose it in purple! n

a empiezo a escuchar comentarios del tipo: “¡Yo con 200.000 euros me compraría dos Nissan GT-R!” Bueno, quizás pudiera, pero aún así nunca tendría un coche como el Bentley Continental GTC del año 2012.

Lo que la mayoría de la gente no entiende de los clientes de la firma Bentley, es que el precio para ellos es lo de menos. Los compradores de Bentley no piensan qué coche de 200.000 euros van a comprar, sino en que mansión aparcarán su coche nuevo de 200.000 euros. De hecho, estoy seguro de que algunos clientes combinan el color de su coche con el color del yate que les lleva, a ellos y a su coche, por puertos exóticos de todo el mundo.

En pocas palabras, a los clientes de Bentley no les importa que la gente piense, que deberían haberse comprado un Nissan GT-R, un Aston Martin o incluso un carrito de los helados perfectamente equipado porque, lo más probable, es que ya tengan uno de esos o cualquier otro coche que pueda pensar que es mejor y más barato.

Por ello, la firma Bentley no considera que ningún otro fabricante pueda hacerles la competencia. Para los diseñadores de coches de la firma Crewe, no se trata de ir cara a cara con otro fabricante, sino que se trata de diseñar algo tan increíble que capte la atención de aquellas personas con un alto poder adquisitivo, y poco tiempo para pensar en qué gastarlo.

Después de probar el Bentley, resulta difícil comparar el Continental GTC con cualquier otro coche. Al fin y al cabo, ¿cuántos deportivos descapotables de 200.000� hay en el mercado? Sinceramente, una prueba de conducción es todo un placer para mí.

Incluso antes de sentarme en el coche, ya conozco mis expectativas, porque es un Bentley y es tan bueno como aparenta ser.

Como con todos los vehículos de Bentley, recibes exactamente lo que esperas. Sin embargo, dado mi interés en periodismo profesional, no sólo debo informar de lo fantástico que es, así que hablemos de su potencia.

El motor de W12, de 6,0 litros de cilindrada y doble turbocompresor, es más potente que el de cualquier otro coche que pueda conducir fuera de una pista de carreras.

Es muy rápido en la parrilla de salida, como un corredor olímpico dopado. Yo, que personalmente he experimentado la sensación de 0 a 60 km/h en sólo 4,8 segundos, me atrevería a decir que ni siquiera era el máximo. Una vez que la aguja marca 60 km/h, parece que anda

sólo. El problema obvio con tal velocidad, por supuesto, es la posibilidad de detener el vehículo, lo que otorga a este monstruo, por igual, la comodidad y el control de forma impresionante.

Tuve el placer de conducir durante una semana el Bentley Continental GTC, atravesando la Costa del Sol desde Sotogrande hasta Málaga. Por el interior, atravesamos muchos de los pueblos llenos de urbanizaciones y villas con carteles de compra-venta que incluyen los precios de la vivienda, más o menos equitativos a los de los vehículos Bentley.

Sin embargo, el Bentley es uno de los mejores coches que puede comprar a ese precio. Si no es el mejor, es difícil entender esos niveles de riqueza. Si alguna vez alcanzo la condición social que me permita lucir un precioso reloj de pulsera hecho a mano, por el mismo precio que el coche que tengo actualmente, será un Bentley, sin lugar a dudas, el que ocupe uno de los espacios del hangar convertido en cochera en una de mis mansiones, aunque... ¡No n creo que lo elija en color púrpura!
