Vivir al Aire Libre:
by Helen Mathews
In Spain, outdoor space is not an afterthought. It is an extension of the home. By May, this becomes unmistakably clear, as terraces, patios, balconies, and gardens are not only used more frequently, but actively transformed.
Across towns and villages, small outdoor spaces begin to evolve. Balconies that lay quiet through winter are cleaned, repainted, and brought back to life with plants. Terraces are rearranged, furniture reappears, and shaded corners are created with intention. Even the most modest space, whether a narrow balcony or a small courtyard, becomes somewhere to spend time rather than simply pass through.
This transformation is not accidental. It reflects a cultural understanding that outdoor living enhances daily life. A table placed outside changes how meals are experienced. A chair positioned to catch the late afternoon sun becomes a destination in itself. Lighting, plants, and textiles are introduced not for decoration alone, but to create atmosphere. The result is a gradual merging of interior and exterior. Homes extend outward. Living rooms gain a second version under the open sky. Dining spaces become more flexible, adapting to the time of day and temperature. What was once inside is now shared with the outdoors. There is also a strong element of personal expression. No two spaces are identical. Some are filled with greenery, others are kept minimal and open. Some prioritise shade and privacy, others embrace sunlight and views. Each reflects how the space will be used, whether for morning coffee, long lunches, or evening drinks. Importantly, this way of living does not require scale. It is not dependent on large gardens or expansive terraces. It is defined instead by intention. A small space, thoughtfully arranged, can offer as much enjoyment as a larger one. Part of this transformation is supported by the quality and availability of outdoor furniture, particularly through local

businesses that understand the demands of the climate. Across southern Spain, specialist retailers offer an impressive range of pieces designed for both comfort and durability. These materials withstand sun, heat, and occasional coastal moisture while maintaining a refined aesthetic.
From solid wood dining tables to lightweight aluminium seating, from woven rattan-style sofas to deep-cushioned loungers, the options are both practical and stylish. Neutral tones dominate, allowing the natural surroundings such as plants, sky, and light to take centre stage, while textures add depth and warmth. Increasingly, modular designs allow homeowners to adapt their spaces depending on the occasion, whether it is a quiet morning coffee or a larger gathering with friends. What stands out is not just the quality of the furniture, but the accessibility of it. Local suppliers often provide guidance tailored to specific spaces, helping residents make the most of even the smallest terrace or balcony. It reinforces the idea that outdoor living is not reserved for exceptional homes, but available to anyone willing to shape their space with care.
By May, these spaces are no longer in transition. They are in use. Meals move outside, conversations extend into the evening, and daily routines shift accordingly. Doors remain open longer, and the boundary between inside and outside becomes almost irrelevant. In many parts of the world, outdoor living is occasional. In Spain, it is integrated. In that integration lies its true luxury. It is not exclusivity, but accessibility. It is an everyday enhancement to how life is lived.

Fashion After Dark
By Andrea Stone
Summer in southern Spain truly begins after sunset. As the heat of the day softens and golden light fades into warm evening skies, the atmosphere changes completely. Terraces fill with conversation, restaurants come alive and beach clubs transform into elegant nighttime spaces. Fashion follows the same rhythm. During the day, comfort may lead the way, but after dark, summer style becomes more polished, expressive and refined.
Dressing for summer evenings is about understanding balance. Temperatures remain warm well into the night, so heavy fabrics and structured layering rarely have a place. Instead, the season calls for lightweight elegance. Linen, silk, satin and fine cotton become the fabrics of choice, allowing movement and breathability while still creating a sophisticated silhouette.
For women, summer evenings invite fluid shapes and understated glamour. Slip dresses in neutral tones, flowing maxi dresses and coordinated linen sets dominate the season. Soft metallics, open backs and subtle cut-out details add a sense of occasion without feeling overdone. The modern approach to evening dressing is relaxed rather than rigid. Flat leather sandals may replace heels, and

oversized jewellery is often traded for delicate gold pieces that catch the light naturally.
Colour also changes after dark. While daytime fashion often embraces brighter tones and playful prints, evening wear leans towards a more refined palette. Black returns during the summer months, joined by deep chocolate tones, soft creams, navy and muted olive. White linen remains timeless under evening lighting, especially when paired with gold accessories or natural textures such as raffia and woven leather.
For men, summer fashion after dark centres on effortless tailoring. Lightweight linen shirts worn open at the collar, relaxed trousers and softly structured blazers create a look that feels elegant without appearing formal. Neutral shades remain dominant, although deeper tones emerge during the evening hours. Crisp white shirts, tailored shorts in darker colours and polished loafers capture the relaxed sophistication associated with Mediterranean nightlife. Accessories become an important part of the overall look. Woven bags, sculptural jewellery, elegant watches and statement sunglasses worn into the final moments of daylight complete the mood. Fragrance also plays its part during summer evenings, with lighter citrus notes giving way to warmer woods, amber and spice.
What defines summer fashion after dark is not excess, but atmosphere. The style of southern Spain is rarely about looking overly styled or dramatic. Instead, it reflects confidence, ease and an understanding of the setting. Clothes are chosen not only for appearance but for the way they move through long dinners, rooftop cocktails and late-night walks beside the sea. There is also a sense of freedom in summer

evening dressing. Rules soften.
A linen shirt can feel formal enough for dinner yet relaxed enough for a beachside bar. A simple black dress can move effortlessly from sunset drinks to dancing long after midnight. The best summer style is adaptable, comfortable and quietly striking.
Ultimately, summer fashion after dark captures the spirit of Mediterranean living itself. Elegant but relaxed, polished yet natural, it reflects evenings that stretch long into the night, where style feels effortless and the atmosphere does the rest.

Forrunners, cyclists and fitness enthusiasts, few things are more frustrating than a pain that worsens with every workout. Commonly known as “runner’s knee”, iliotibial band syndrome (IT band syndrome) is one of the most common overuse injuries affecting active adults.
The condition causes pain on the outer side of the knee and is typically linked to repetitive movement combined with poor biomechanics. Left untreated, it can quickly disrupt even the most consistent fitness routine.
What Causes It?
The iliotibial band is a thick band of connective tissue running from the hip to the shinbone, helping to stabilise the knee during movement. When this structure becomes irritated or inflamed, pain develops around the outside of the knee.
A sudden increase in running distance, cycling intensity or hill training is a common trigger. Other contributing factors include muscular weakness, poor posture, flat feet, high arches and unsuitable footwear. Running on hard or uneven surfaces can also increase strain on the knee.
Common Symptoms
The hallmark symptom is pain along the outer edge of the knee, although discomfort may spread towards the thigh or hip. Many people first notice symptoms while running downhill, climbing stairs or walking long distances.
Some athletes also experience a clicking or rubbing sensation during movement. Symptoms often improve with rest but quickly return once activity resumes.
Diagnosis and Recovery
Diagnosis is usually made through a physical assessment and review of training habits. In some cases, MRI scans or ultrasound imaging may be used to rule out other injuries.
Most cases respond well to conservative treatment. Reducing aggravating activities allows inflammation to settle, while ice

The injury that can derail an active lifestyle
therapy and anti-inflammatory medication may help during the early stages. Long-term recovery depends on correcting the underlying causes. Stretching the iliotibial band, glutes and thigh muscles is often combined with strengthening exercises for the hips and lower limbs. Physiotherapy can also help improve movement patterns and running technique. In some cases, orthotic insoles may be recommended to improve biomechanics.
Prevention Matters
Experts agree that prevention is largely about training smarter. Gradually increasing exercise intensity, maintaining good running form and wearing supportive footwear can significantly reduce the risk of injury. Strengthening the stabilising muscles around the hips and thighs is particularly important, helping to reduce stress on the knees and keep active people moving pain-free. n

In November 2025, I celebrated a milestone birthday, unfortunately it wasn’t 40 or even 50. Along with the passing years came the inevitable signs of ageing; a few extra wrinkles, the odd ache and pain, and a body that no longer responded quite the way it once did. Although I navigated the menopause relatively smoothly, with only occasional hormonal fluctuations, there was one thing I struggled to accept, the gradual weight gain, expanding waistline and stubborn back fat that seemed to quietly take up residence over time.
Ironically, this was not the first time I had found myself in this position. Fifteen years ago, after too much partying, socialising and neglecting my general fitness, I embarked on a personal training programme called “Operation Bikini,” which was featured in OCIO Magazine over a four-month period. Through hard work, discipline and determination, the transformation was remarkable and left me feeling fitter, healthier and far more confident.
Fast forward to today, and I realised it was once again time to prioritise my health and wellbeing. This time, I turned to local personal trainer and sports enthusiast, Chantelle Barraball.
Fitness has always played a major role in Chantelle’s life. Growing up, she took part

in swimming, athletics and team sports, following in the footsteps of her sporty father, who still competes and wins medals, into his seventies. Chantelle herself has built an impressive sporting résumé, competing in marathons, triathlons and obstacle course races, often achieving podium finishes.
More recently, her focus has shifted towards open-water swimming, CrossFit and hybrid fitness events that combine endurance and strength training.
Chantelle firmly believes in practising what she preaches. “Challenging myself regularly helps me better understand the mindset, fears and achievements my own clients experience,” she explains.
Alongside her online one-to-one coaching and small group training sessions, Chantelle now runs highly popular “8 Week Challenges,” which immediately resonated with me. The programme combines tailored fitness and nutrition guidance with accountability, realistic goal setting and sustainable lifestyle changes. Participants also become part of a supportive WhatsApp community made up of people sharing the same journey, where Chantelle regularly provides encouragement, practical advice
and motivational tips to help keep everyone focused and inspired.
Using Chantelle’s online app, I track my progress, while regular check-ins help keep me accountable and on course. Importantly, the programme is designed around real life. It is not about extreme dieting or unrealistic restrictions, but about creating healthy, sustainable habits that fit around work, socialising, lunches with friends and the occasional glass of wine.
At the time of writing, I have completed three weeks with Chantelle with her 8 Week Challenge as well as an extra weekly 1-1 session. I am already two kilos lighter. I feel stronger, more energised and far more focused on becoming the best version of myself both physically and mentally. Most importantly, I feel I am focusing not just on how I look today, but on my future health, confidence and wellbeing.
Follow my progress over the coming months and, if you too are ready to take control of your health and fitness journey, perhaps now is the perfect time to get in touch with Chantelle.

GOLF TIPS FROM THE PRO’s
Up and down from the bunker
Bunker shots are some of the most difficult in golf. Hitting the ball out of the sand requires technique that is unlike any other shot in the game. Combine that with the fact that every kind of sand is different, and you have a recipe for a difficult up-and-down. Here are some tips for playing from the sand.
Club selection: Typically, you want a sand wedge (56 degrees) or higher. You should also make sure your wedge has the correct bounce so it can glide through the sand underneath the ball. Evaluate the sand: Is the sand packed and wet? Or is it drier and finer? Depending on the sands condition, your strategy will change. If the sand is packed, you want a more shut clubface, whereas if it’s fine
sand, you want to open it up more. Adjust setup: You want a wide stance when in the sand for better balance. You should also dig your feet into the sand to make sure your base is set. Play the ball a bit forward in your stance and then aim a bit to the left of your target. The more open you play the blade, the more you need to aim to the left.
5. Steepen your swing: A shot from the bunker needs a steep angle of attack,
and a great way to achieve that is by hinging your wrists aggressively. On the downswing, aim for a spot about an inch or two behind the ball in the sand. Try to hit that spot and let the club glide underneath the ball through the sand. Do not quit on the shot, you must follow through all the way. If executed correctly, the ball will explode out of the bunker with the sand you hit and settle safely on the green.
“Hitting the ball out of the sand requires technique that is unlike any other shot in the game, plus, every kind of sand is different.”

From tennis to padel
Fordecades, tennis has been one of the world’s most recognised and respected sports. From Wimbledon traditions to grand slam rivalries, its appeal has crossed generations. Yet across Europe, particularly in Spain, a growing number of players are swapping the tennis court for the glass walls of the padel court. The question is no longer why people are discovering padel, but why so many tennis players are making the switch. One of the biggest reasons is accessibility. Tennis can be technically demanding, particularly for beginners. Developing a reliable serve, maintaining long rallies, and covering a full-sized court often takes considerable time and physical effort. Padel, by comparison, is far easier to pick up. New players can enjoy extended rallies within their first session, which creates an immediate sense of enjoyment and progress.

on joints and muscles. Many former tennis players appreciate the fact that they can continue competing and staying active while placing less stress on the body. It is one of the reasons the sport appeals to such a wide age range.
The style of play also attracts former tennis players. The use of the walls introduces a tactical dimension that feels fresh and engaging. Patience, positioning, and teamwork often matter more than raw power, creating longer rallies and more unpredictable points. For players who enjoy strategy as much as athleticism, padel offers a different but equally satisfying challenge.
Another major factor is the social atmosphere. Tennis is frequently played in singles, which can feel intense and individual. Padel, however, is almost always doubles. The result is a more relaxed and sociable experience, where conversation, teamwork, and shared enjoyment are just as important as the score itself. Many players find that padel fits more naturally into modern social life, particularly in clubs where matches are followed by drinks, meals, or time spent on the terrace with friends.
There is also no ignoring the sport’s rapid growth. New clubs continue to open across Europe every year, while social media has helped transform padel into a modern lifestyle sport. Professional footballers, celebrities, and athletes from other disciplines regularly share their passion for the game, further fuelling its popularity. Of course, tennis is unlikely to disappear from the sporting landscape any time soon. But for many players, padel offers something that feels increasingly valuable: accessibility, community, and fun. It is not about replacing tennis entirely. It is about discovering a new way to enjoy life on court.
The physical demands are also different. While tennis requires explosive movement across large spaces, padel is played on a smaller enclosed court, reducing the strain n
Maxicar & Rentame
On the eastern Costa del Sol, where life revolves around movement, sunshine and freedom, two local businesses have become firmly woven into the lifestyle of the Vélez-Málaga and Torre del Mar area: Maxicar and Rentame. Together, they offer something increasingly valuable in southern Spain — reliability, flexibility and an understanding of the international community that now calls this part of Andalucía home. At first glance, Maxicar may seem like a traditional vehicle dealership, but the company has grown into something far more comprehensive. Alongside buying and selling quality second-hand cars, Maxicar operates a substantial mechanical and bodywork workshop, handling everything from

routine servicing to major repairs and maintenance.
In a region where people depend heavily on their vehicles — whether travelling along the coast, navigating inland villages or managing day-to-day life — trust matters enormously. Maxicar has built its reputation on exactly that. Customers are not simply purchasing a vehicle; they are investing in dependable aftercare and a business that understands the realities of life on the Costa del Sol.
The atmosphere reflects the character of the region itself: professional yet approachable, practical without losing warmth. Rather than feeling like a corporate dealership, Maxicar feels connected to the community it serves — a mix of Spanish families, expatriates, seasonal residents and holiday homeowners who all rely on mobility in different ways.
That philosophy extends naturally into Rentame.
If Maxicar represents stability, Rentame represents adventure.
The company offers a varied rental fleet that perfectly suits the modern Mediterranean lifestyle. Cars and mopeds provide practical transport for visitors and residents alike, while caravans and motorhomes cater to the
Maxicar Y Rentame

growing appetite for flexible travel across Spain and Europe. There is something timelessly appealing about the open road in southern Europe. From coastal drives through Andalucía to spontaneous escapes into Portugal or the Spanish interior, the freedom of motorhome travel has become increasingly attractive to travellers seeking independence and comfort in equal measure.
Torre del Mar is an ideal starting point for that kind of experience — authentic enough to retain its Andalusian charm, yet modern enough to comfortably welcome international visitors year-round.
“Rentame offers a varied rental fleet that perfectly suits the modern Mediterranean lifestyle. Cars and mopeds provide practical transport for visitors and residents alike, while caravans and motorhomes cater to the growing appetite for flexible travel across Spain and Europe.”
Businesses like Maxicar and Rentame succeed because they understand the rhythm of life on the Costa del Sol. Whether repairing a trusted family vehicle, helping someone purchase a dependable second-hand car or preparing travellers for a Mediterranean road trip, both companies provide more than services alone. They support a lifestyle built around movement, exploration and freedom. On a coastline often defined by seasonal tourism, that sense of permanence and trust is what truly sets them apart. n n

In an age of crowded landmarks, packed beaches, and carefully curated social media destinations, many travellers are beginning to search for something different. Increasingly, the true luxury of travel lies not in exclusivity, but in authenticity — in discovering places that feel untouched by mass tourism and connected to the rhythm of local life. Spain, perhaps more than any other European country, still offers countless opportunities for these quieter discoveries. Beyond the famous cities and well-known coastlines lies another Spain entirely. It is a country of hidden villages, overlooked historic towns, and landscapes where traditions remain woven into everyday life. These are the places where travel slows naturally, where conversations linger, and where the experience feels genuine rather than staged.
In the province of Jaén, the elegant Renaissance town of Úbeda remains one of Andalucía’s most underrated destinations. Golden stone buildings glow in the evening light, peaceful plazas invite long lunches, and the surrounding olive groves create a landscape unlike anywhere else in Europe. Despite its architectural beauty and UNESCO recognition, the town retains a calm, local atmosphere that feels increasingly rare. Further south, Guadix offers one of Spain’s most unusual landscapes. Famous for its cave houses carved into the hillsides, the town blends history, nature, and daily life in fascinating ways. Smoke rising gently from cave chimneys on a cool evening creates a scene that feels almost timeless. Walking through Guadix reveals a side of Andalucía that many visitors never encounter.
In the north-west, hidden among the hills of Salamanca province, lies Mogarraz. Small, peaceful, and full of character, the village is known for the striking portraits displayed on many of its houses, giving its narrow streets a quietly artistic identity. Surrounded by forests and mountain scenery, it feels wonderfully detached from the pace of modern life.
Galicia, too, remains one of Spain’s great secrets for many international travellers. Away from Santiago de Compostela, small coastal villages and inland communities offer dramatic scenery, exceptional seafood, and a way of life shaped by the

Hidden Spain

Atlantic. Here, green landscapes replace the sun-scorched tones often associated with Spain, revealing a softer, more introspective beauty. What connects these destinations is not grandeur or spectacle, but atmosphere. Hidden Spain rewards curiosity rather than checklist tourism. It encourages travellers to wander without urgency, to stop in family-run cafés, to explore quiet streets, and to appreciate the details that often disappear in more heavily visited destinations.
In many ways, these quieter corners represent the future of meaningful travel. They offer authenticity, human connection, and a slower pace that feels increasingly valuable in modern life. Spain’s hidden destinations remind us that sometimes the most memorable journeys are not found in the places everyone already knows, but in the ones waiting quietly to be discovered.
As the June sun slowly dips below the horizon, casting a warm terracotta glow over the ancient stone of Malaga’s Gibralfaro castle, a familiar magic awakens across the region. The heavy, shimmering heat of the Andalusian day gently gives way to a balmy evening breeze that sweeps along the eastern stretches of the Costa del Sol. This transition marks more than just the solstice; it signals the official and eagerly awaited arrival of the coastal cocktail season.
From the sleek, high-altitude rooftop lounges overlooking Malaga’s bustling port to the bohemian-chic chiringuitos dotted along the wide sands of Torre del Mar and the dramatic cliffside terraces of Nerja, the region’s mixology scene is stepping boldly into the spotlight. This year, the overarching trend belongs to “liquid cuisine,” a sophisticated movement celebrating the bountiful, hyper-local harvest of the sun-drenched Axarquía region.

Cocktail Season

mixologists are trading generic imported syrups for the sweet, buttery notes of locally grown mangoes and avocados sourced just down the coast. The iconic, refreshing tinto de verano is being elevated with artisanal vermouths and premium craft sodas, while crisp, aromatic Muscatel wines from the steeply terraced vineyards of Cómpeta provide a beautifully fragrant base for avant-garde sundowners. Even the traditional, deeply rich sugar cane honey from the white-washed village of Frigiliana is finding its way into sophisticated rumbased creations, expertly muddled alongside wild, fragrant rosemary and sharp, freshly squeezed Axarquía lemons. But cocktail season in this unique corner of Spain is about far more than merely what is poured into your glass. It represents a profound sensory philosophy. It is found in the rhythmic clink of heavy crystal against the iconic backdrop of the Balcón de Europa, the cooling sensation of salt air lingering on your skin, and the deliberate art of slowing down to match the relaxed Andalusian pace as the sea turns to deep ink. Find your perfect terrace, watch the beautiful coastline begin to glow, and raise a toast to the months ahead. Summer has officially arrived east of Malaga, and it tastes absolutely exquisite.

Few experiences capture the spirit of southern Spain quite like an afternoon spent at a chiringuito. Scattered along the beaches of Andalucía, these relaxed seaside restaurants are far more than places to eat. They are part of the rhythm of coastal life itself, where long lunches blend effortlessly into sunset drinks and the sound of the sea becomes the soundtrack to every meal.
El alma de la costa española

There is little formality here, yet that is precisely the appeal. A chiringuito invites people to slow down, settle in and enjoy the moment.
becoming stylish beachfront destinations complete with elegant terraces, cocktail menus and contemporary Mediterranean cuisine. Yet even the most sophisticated chiringuito still retains that unmistakable relaxed atmosphere that defines dining on the Spanish coast.
The charm of the chiringuito lies in its simplicity. Tables set directly on the sand, the scent of charcoal drifting through the warm air, cold drinks arriving glistening in the sunshine and the gentle hum of conversation carried on the sea breeze. u
Traditionally, many chiringuitos began as humble beach shacks serving freshly caught fish to locals and fishermen. Over the years they have evolved, with some
At the heart of the experience is the food. Fresh seafood dominates the menu, often prepared with remarkable simplicity. Sardines grilled over open fires, known as espetos, remain one of Andalucía’s most iconic beachside dishes. Prawns, calamari, octopus and grilled fish arrive at the table drizzled with olive oil, lemon and little else, allowing the freshness of the ingredients

to speak for itself. Alongside them come crisp salads, patatas bravas, local wines and ice-cold beer served in frosted glasses. But chiringuitos are about more than what is on the plate. They represent a particular way of living that feels deeply Mediterranean. Meals are rarely rushed. Friends gather for hours beneath shaded canopies, families linger over shared dishes and couples watch the changing colours of the sea as afternoon slowly turns to evening. Time seems to move differently beside the water.
As the sun begins to set, the atmosphere shifts almost imperceptibly. Music drifts softly through the air, candles flicker on tables and cocktails begin to replace coffee cups. Some chiringuitos become vibrant social spaces after dark, while others remain calm and understated, offering little more than the sound of waves beneath the stars.
For visitors to southern Spain, a meal at a chiringuito is often one of the most memorable parts of the journey. It captures something authentic and timeless about life on the Costa del Sol and beyond. The food is fresh, the setting is beautiful and the experience feels wonderfully uncomplicated.
