anuary arrives quietly, bringing with it a sense of space and possibility. The festive lights fade, the pace of life slows, and the region reveals a calmer, more reflective beauty. Mornings feel fresher, days are clear and bright, and there is time once again to enjoy simple pleasures. In this issue, we look ahead with a gentle approach to the new year. Think nourishing food rather than restriction, movement that feels good, and style that favours comfort without losing elegance. We explore inspiring places to escape the crowds, ideas for refreshing home interiors, and ways to reset without pressure or promises that feel impossible to keep. January is not about starting over, but about starting well. A month to breathe, to refocus, and to ease into the year with confidence, clarity, and a renewed appreciation for everyday living in this beautiful part of the world.

here is a familiar moment in every home once the Christmas decorations are packed away. The lights are switched off, the tree is gone, and the rooms suddenly feel quieter, simpler, almost bare. For many, this shift brings a fleeting sense of loss, as though the warmth and magic of the season have disappeared along with the baubles and garlands. Yet this moment should not be viewed with sadness. Instead, it marks the beginning of one of the most refreshing periods in the design calendar. The weeks after Christmas offer a rare pause. The visual noise fades, surfaces reappear, and the true bones of our living 06 OCIO magazine

spaces come back into focus. This clarity creates the perfect opportunity to reassess how our homes feel and how we want them to support us in the year ahead. Far from empty, these rooms are full of possibility. Start by embracing the calm. After weeks of rich colour, sparkle, and festive layering, simplicity feels luxurious. Allow space to

breathe by clearing side tables, editing shelves, and removing items that no longer serve either a practical or aesthetic purpose. This act alone can transform a living room, making it feel lighter and more intentional. With the decorations gone, texture becomes your greatest ally. Introduce softness through natural materials such as wool throws, linen cushions, and tactile rugs. These elements bring warmth without clutter and help maintain a sense of comfort through the colder months. A single beautifully chosen throw draped over a sofa can feel more considered than a room filled with excess accessories. u

A OCIO magazine

This is also the ideal moment to refresh colour subtly. While Christmas often leans into deep reds, greens, and metallics, the post festive palette benefits from gentler tones. Think warm neutrals, soft greys, muted earth shades, or calming creams. These hues reflect light beautifully during shorter winter days and create a backdrop that feels timeless rather than seasonal. Lighting deserves renewed attention at this time of year. Without fairy lights to rely on, consider how your lighting works throughout the day and evening. Table lamps, floor lamps, and warm bulbs can redefine the mood of a room. Thoughtful 08 OCIO magazine

lighting creates intimacy and softness, reminding us that winter interiors are about atmosphere as much as appearance. January also invites small but meaningful updates. Rearranging furniture, changing cushion covers, or introducing a new piece of artwork can make a space feel entirely new without major investment. Plants, even simple greenery, bring life back into a room and signal a quiet optimism for the months ahead. Ultimately, the bareness we notice after Christmas is not an absence, but a reset. It allows us to reconnect with our homes and shape them with intention rather than habit. By embracing this quieter chapter,

“While Christmas often leans into deep reds, greens, and metallics, the post festive palette benefits from gentler tones.” we transform the post festive lull into a season of renewal, clarity, and understated elegance. Our living spaces become not just places we decorate, but environments that support rest, reflection, and a fresh start. n

outhern Spain has a way of making property dreams feel wonderfully achievable. From sundrenched coastlines to peaceful inland villages, from sleek modern apartments to centuries-old townhouses, this is a region where there truly is a home for everyone. Whatever your lifestyle, budget, or longterm plans, the key to finding the right property is not luck. It is having the right real estate agent by your side. What makes southern Spain so appealing is its extraordinary variety. Along the coast, you will find contemporary apartments 14 OCIO magazine

with sea views, resort-style developments with pools and gyms, and penthouses designed for outdoor living all year round. Move slightly inland and the landscape changes to whitewashed villages, charming townhouses, and traditional homes full of character. Head further into the countryside and you discover fincas, cortijos, and villas surrounded by olive groves and rolling hills. Whether you are looking for a holiday escape, a permanent home, or a smart investment, the choice is remarkably broad. This diversity attracts a wide mix of buyers.

Some are local families looking to upsize or relocate. Others are national buyers drawn by lifestyle and climate. Many are international purchasers searching for sunshine, space, and a better quality of life. Some want vibrant communities and easy access to restaurants and culture. Others crave peace, privacy, and nature. The beauty of southern Spain is that it offers all of this within a relatively compact region. A good agent takes the time to understand not just what you want, but how you want to live. They listen to your priorities, whether that is being close to the beach, having outdoor space, walking to cafés, or finding a property with strong rental potential. From there, they narrow the search and introduce you to homes that genuinely suit you, saving time and avoiding frustration. An experienced agent also brings clarity and confidence to the process. They understand the local market, know what represents good value, and can explain the differences between areas that may look similar at first glance. They guide you through each stage, from viewings and negotiations to contracts and completion, making sure everything runs smoothly and transparently. For many buyers, especially those new to Spain, this support makes all the difference. Perhaps most importantly, the right agent turns the search into an enjoyable journey.

New Year, New Intentions Nuevo Año, Nuevas Intenciones by Ellie Hunter

A

s the calendar turns and the final echoes of celebration fade, the New Year arrives carrying a familiar promise of renewal. Across cultures and continents, January has become a moment of collective pause, a time to reflect on what has been and to imagine what could be. New Year resolutions, for all their mixed reputation, remain one of the most enduring rituals of modern life, rooted in our desire for progress, clarity, and change. At their heart, resolutions are about hope. The symbolic clean slate of a new year gives us permission to reassess our habits and priorities. Psychologically, this moment feels different from an ordinary Monday or even a birthday. The New Year represents structure and order, a natural breakpoint that encourages reflection. It is no coincidence that resolutions often follow periods of indulgence or rest. After weeks of excess or disruption, many u

people crave balance, routine, and purpose. The most popular resolutions tend to follow a familiar pattern. Health and wellbeing consistently top the list. Eating better, exercising more, losing weight, or prioritising mental health all reflect a growing awareness of the link between lifestyle and long-term quality of life. Financial goals are also common, from saving more to spending more mindfully. Others focus on personal growth, such as learning a new skill, travelling more, or finding a better work-life balance. These choices reveal what many people feel is missing: time, energy, security, and fulfilment. Yet resolutions often fail not because they are unrealistic, but because they are too vague or too harsh. A sweeping declaration to “get fit” or “be happier” offers little guidance once everyday life resumes. The pressure to transform overnight can quickly give way to frustration. Sustainable change rarely comes from extremes. Instead, it grows from small, consistent adjustments that fit naturally into daily routines. This is where a shift in mindset can make all the difference. Rather than viewing resolutions as rigid rules, they can be seen as intentions. Choosing to walk more, cook one extra meal at home each week, or set aside ten minutes a day for reflection creates momentum without overwhelm. Progress becomes something to build upon, not something to judge. Encouragement is also essential. Change is rarely linear, and setbacks are part of the process. Missing a gym session or overspending one month does not undo the bigger picture. What matters is returning to the intention without 24 OCIO magazine

guilt. Celebrating small wins reinforces motivation and turns effort into habit. Perhaps most importantly, resolutions should be rooted in self-compassion. The goal is not to fix what is broken, but to nurture what already works. Embracing change as an act of care rather than criticism reframes the entire experience. A better life is not created through perfection, but through awareness, patience, and choice. As the New Year unfolds, resolutions need not be grand or dramatic. When approached with honesty and kindness, they become quiet commitments to live with more purpose. And sometimes, that is the most powerful change of all. n

Dress down January Enero informal By Patricia Lewison

A

fter the glitz and glamour of the festive season, January arrives with a collective exhale. The sequins are packed away, the heels rest in their boxes, and fashion takes on a more relaxed rhythm. This is the season of dressing down, of prioritising comfort without letting go of style. In this quieter moment, leisurewear steps confidently into the spotlight, not as an afterthought, but as a considered and stylish choice. January offers the perfect excuse to embrace a softer approach to dressing. As routines reset and days feel slower, wardrobes shift towards pieces that feel good to wear and effortless to style. Sweat tops, relaxed trousers and coordinated tracksuits have evolved far beyond their gym-bound origins. What was once associated with lazy Sundays or rushed errands has been transformed into a refined category of modern dressing. Today’s leisurewear is all about polish. The oldfashioned hoodie and baggy sweatpants have been quietly retired, replaced by streamlined silhouettes, thoughtful tailoring and elevated fabrics. Sweatshirts are cut with cleaner lines, u

Trousers come with tapered legs, flattering fits and higher-quality materials that feel as comfortable as they look refined. Luxury fashion houses have played a key role in this shift. Leading designers have redefined casual dressing, presenting leisurewear as a legitimate part of the modern wardrobe. Cashmere-blend joggers, sculpted zip-up tops and minimalist tracksuits in neutral palettes now sit comfortably alongside more traditional winter staples. At the same time, high street brands have embraced the movement, offering accessible versions that combine style, affordability and versatility. Colour plays an important role in this new wave of leisurewear. January favours calm, understated tones such as stone, soft grey, taupe, navy and muted greens. These shades feel grounding after the excess of December and make mixing and matching effortless. Monochrome looks are particularly popular, creating a clean, intentional aesthetic that feels both modern and flattering. What makes contemporary leisurewear so appealing is its adaptability.

A Healthy New Year Un año nuevo saludable By Heather Sallson

A

s the festive season fades into memory, January arrives carrying a familiar pressure. After weeks of celebration, indulgent meals, and relaxed routines, many of us feel an urge to reset. Gym memberships surge, cupboards are cleared of treats, and ambitious plans promise transformation in record time. Yet the rush to undo the excesses of the season can sometimes do more harm than good. Crash diets and intense exercise regimes often begin with enthusiasm, but they rarely account for real life. When routines feel restrictive or unrealistic, motivation quickly fades. The result is not only disappointment, but a sense of failure that can undermine confidence and wellbeing. Health, however, is not built on extremes. It is shaped by consistency, balance, and patience. The new year offers an opportunity to reframe how we approach wellbeing. Rather than punishing the body for festive enjoyment, it is far more effective to treat it with care. Enjoyment and health are not opposites. They coexist best when we listen to what our bodies need, rather than forcing them into sudden change. Easing into new routines allows habits to form naturally. A gentle return to movement, such as walking, stretching, or swimming, helps rebuild energy without exhaustion. Likewise, focusing on nourishing foods rather than strict restrictions creates a healthier relationship with eating. Adding more fresh ingredients, drinking more water, and paying attention to hunger cues often brings better results than eliminating entire food groups. 38 OCIO magazine

Kindness towards oneself is a powerful but often overlooked part of health. Progress does not need to be dramatic to be meaningful. Small changes, repeated over time, are far more sustainable than grand promises that last only a few weeks. A slower approach reduces pressure and leaves room for flexibility, enjoyment, and real life. January does not need to be about reinvention. It can simply be a moment to recalibrate. Health is not a deadline to meet, but a journey that unfolds gradually. By easing into new routines and setting realistic expectations, the new year becomes less about correction and more about care. In choosing patience over perfection, we give ourselves the chance to build habits that last well beyond the first months of the year. And in doing so, health becomes not a resolution to keep or break, but a way of living that feels supportive, balanced, and achievable. n

A

Your first padel lesson F

or many players, booking a first padel lesson is the moment when curiosity turns into commitment. You may already enjoy social matches with friends, or perhaps you have only just discovered the sport. Either way, a lesson provides structure, confidence, and a clearer understanding of how padel is really meant to be played. Most lessons begin with a brief conversation. A coach will usually ask about your sporting background, whether you have played tennis or squash before, and what you would like to achieve. This helps tailor the session to your level and ensures the experience feels encouraging rather than overwhelming. It also allows the coach to identify habits that may need adjusting from the very start. Early lessons focus on the fundamentals. You will learn how to hold the racket correctly, how to position yourself on the court, and how to move efficiently. Unlike 42 OCIO magazine

tu primera clase de pádel by Kevin Hartson

other racquet sports, padel places great importance on patience and placement. Coaches often emphasise control over power, especially at the beginning, helping players develop a calm and consistent style of play. One of the most distinctive elements of padel is the use of the walls. Learning when to let the ball bounce off the glass, and how to respond calmly rather than rushing the shot, is a key part of early coaching sessions. Many players find that this is where the game truly starts to make sense and becomes more enjoyable. Lessons also introduce basic tactical

concepts. You will learn when to defend, when to move forward, and how to work with your partner rather than playing as an individual. Because padel is so closely linked to teamwork, even a small improvement in positioning or communication can have a big impact on match play and overall confidence. Perhaps the most important outcome of a lesson is confidence. Players often leave their first session feeling more relaxed and more aware of what they are doing on court. Mistakes become learning moments, not frustrations, and progress feels both visible and motivating. As this series has shown, padel is a sport built on accessibility, enjoyment, and connection. With the right equipment, a welcoming social scene, and a little guidance from a coach, it offers something rare. It is a sport that is easy to start, rewarding to improve at, and a pleasure to share with others, whatever your age or experience. n

P

“Unlike other racquet sports, padel places great importance on patience and placement.”

Golf Goals for 2026 W

hat are your golf goals for 2026? Breaking 100, 90, or even 80. Lowering your handicap. Playing more often. These are familiar performance goals, but there are two other types that often matter more: being goals and doing goals. Being goals relate to attitude, priorities, and perspective. They don’t appear on a scorecard, but they shape how we experience the game. Doing goals are easier to measure — new courses played, new destinations explored. Many golfers admire world number one Scottie Scheffler, not only for his consistency, but for his perspective. In interviews, Scheffler has spoken openly about keeping life in balance, placing faith first, family second, and golf third. For many golfers, that outlook is quietly inspiring. A meaningful being goal might be to approach the game with greater humility, gratitude, and calm. When it comes to doing goals, travel often 44 OCIO magazine

tops the list. Here on the Costa del Sol, Valderrama remains a classic bucket-list experience. But living near Málaga also makes short-haul golf travel especially appealing. Morocco and Tunisia offer outstanding golf without long flights. Both combine excellent courses, rich culture, warm hospitality, and great value — making them ideal spring or autumn destinations. From Marrakech to Hammamet, these countries provide memorable golf experiences just a short journey away. Platforms such as trips.golfand. com and trips.golftunisia.com highlight curated options for golfers looking beyond the familiar. As you think about your goals for 2026, consider not only how well you want to play — but who you want to be on the course. When priorities are in the right order, golf has a way of becoming more enjoyable… and n sometimes, the scores follow.

C

humildad, gratitud, paciencia y calma.

Small Rituals for Safer Roads W

inter arrives gently in Southern Spain. The days remain bright, the air feels crisp rather than cold, and the roads continue to invite long drives along the coast or through inland villages. While we may not face snowdrifts or frozen windscreens, the winter months still call for a quieter kind of car care, a few simple rituals that help keep every journey smooth, safe and enjoyable. As temperatures dip in the early mornings, tyres are often the first to feel the change. A quick pressure check can transform the way your car handles, particularly on wet winter roads. Good tread becomes more noticeable when rain darkens the asphalt, offering reassurance as you glide through bends and roundabouts with confidence. 48 OCIO magazine

Light plays a different role in winter too. Shorter days and softer sunlight mean visibility matters more than ever. Clean headlights, working indicators and clear brake lights ensure you are seen as easily as you see others. Windscreen wipers also earn their place in the spotlight, quietly clearing rain and road spray to keep your view sharp and uninterrupted. Under the bonnet, winter asks for just a little attention. Coolant and oil checks help your engine wake smoothly on cooler mornings, while a healthy battery avoids the frustration of hesitant starts. These are small gestures, yet they reward you with reliability and peace of mind when you turn the key. Wet roads place extra emphasis on braking, and winter is the perfect time to listen closely to your car. Any unfamiliar

sounds or changes in response deserve attention, ensuring every stop feels controlled and composed, whether in city traffic or on open roads. It is also worth thinking about what you carry with you. A torch tucked into the boot, a high-visibility vest or a bottle of screen wash all reflect a calm readiness that suits winter driving perfectly. They may never be needed, but knowing they are there adds to the quiet confidence behind the wheel. Winter motoring in Southern Spain is less about preparation for extremes and more about care and awareness. With a few thoughtful checks and a mindful approach, your car remains a pleasure to drive, ready to carry you through sunlit mornings, rainy afternoons and every journey in between, season after season. n

RECAMBIOS RIOVANN

pequeños gestos para carreteras más seguras by Andrew CapillaN

E

n Southern Spain, winter brings with it an unexpected luxury: world-class skiing just a short journey from the coast. While palm trees sway in Málaga and terraces remain comfortably sunlit, the peaks of the Sierra Nevada rise snow-covered and dramatic, offering one of Europe’s most distinctive alpine experiences. Few regions can boast such contrast, and fewer still deliver it with the style and accessibility found here. Sierra Nevada is widely recognised as one of Europe’s premier ski resorts, not only for the quality of its slopes but for its unique setting. Sitting at over 2,100 metres, it is the highest ski resort in Spain and one of the highest in Europe. With modern lift systems and a wide range of pistes, it caters comfortably to beginners finding their confidence, families enjoying relaxed days on the snow, and 50 OCIO magazine

experienced skiers seeking longer, more challenging runs. Snow conditions are reliably good throughout the season, often enhanced by clear blue skies that feel distinctly Andalusian. Yet skiing here is only part of the story. One of Sierra Nevada’s greatest pleasures lies in its atmosphere. There is an unmistakable sense of ease that sets it apart from more formal Alpine resorts. Days on the slopes tend to be unhurried, with plenty of opportunities to pause for coffee, admire the views across the mountains, or enjoy lunch on a sunny terrace. The light is exceptional, and on clear days the sight of the Mediterranean shimmering in the distance feels almost surreal. As the afternoon fades, après-ski takes on its own relaxed rhythm. Rather than loud excess, Sierra Nevada offers sociable, welcoming spaces where

The Art of Soup el Arte de la Sopa By: Naomi Wellens

I

n a world that often celebrates elaborate dishes and eye catching presentation, soup remains one of the most quietly rewarding pleasures in the kitchen. Simple, nourishing and endlessly adaptable, it has earned its place as a staple across cultures and seasons. As the New Year begins and many of us look for a gentler approach to eating, soup offers a comforting solution that feels both wholesome and indulgent. One of soup’s greatest strengths lies in its simplicity. With a handful of fresh ingredients, a large pot and a little time, it is possible to create something deeply satisfying. Vegetables, pulses, grains and lean proteins all find a natural home in soup, making it an ideal choice for those mindful of weight control after the festive season. It fills the bowl generously without relying on heavy fats, proving that lighter eating does not need to feel restrictive. Homemade soup, in particular, carries a sense of care and authenticity that few dishes can match. The gentle ritual of chopping vegetables, sautéing onions and letting flavours slowly develop creates a moment of calm in busy winter days. Unlike many convenience foods, soup rewards patience rather than speed. It also invites creativity, allowing cooks to adapt recipes to what is in season or already in the fridge. n un mundo que a menudo celebra platos elaborados y presentaciones llamativas, la sopa sigue siendo uno de los placeres más sencillos y reconfortantes de la cocina.

silky pumpkin purée can all be tailored with herbs, spices or a splash of olive oil to suit individual tastes. When winter evenings draw in and temperatures drop, soup comes into its own. There is something undeniably comforting about a steaming bowl enjoyed at the end of the day. It warms from the inside out and brings a sense of reassurance that feels especially welcome on cold nights. Thick and hearty stews satisfy hunger completely, while lighter broths offer nourishment without heaviness. Of course, soup rarely stands alone. Paired with fresh, crusty bread, it becomes a complete and deeply enjoyable meal. A slice of sourdough or a warm baguette turns even the simplest soup into a family favourite. It encourages sharing, passing bowls around the table and lingering a little longer over dinner. For families, soup is an easy way to bring everyone together, offering flavours that can be mild and familiar or gently adventurous. As we step into a new year, soup reminds us that good food does not need to be complicated. It is hearty without excess, nourishing without sacrifice and comforting without guilt. In its many forms, soup proves that some of the greatest pleasures in food come from simplicity, warmth and the joy of sharing a meal made with care. n 58 OCIO magazine

Beyond the Stars Más allá de las estrellas By Roland Gallows

n the culinary world, few accolades carry the weight and prestige of Michelin stars. For chefs and restaurateurs, they represent years of discipline, creativity and relentless pursuit of perfection. A Michelin star can transform a restaurant’s fortunes overnight and place it firmly on the global dining map. Yet while Michelin may be the most famous benchmark of excellence, it is far from the only way greatness is recognised in today’s food industry. Dining culture has evolved, and so too has the way we celebrate outstanding food. Increasingly, accolades reflect not just technical brilliance, but personality, sustainability, innovation and a sense of place. One of the most respected alternatives to Michelin is The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. Voted for by chefs, critics and industry insiders from across the globe, it rewards originality and experience as much as flawless technique. Restaurants that climb this list often become destinations in their own right, known for storytelling, u

atmosphere and bold culinary vision. Closer to home, regional and national guides play an equally important role. Spain’s Repsol Guide is a perfect example. Its Soles Repsol are awarded to restaurants that combine excellent cooking with warmth, authenticity and consistency. Unlike Michelin, which can feel distant or intimidating to some diners, Repsol often highlights places that feel rooted in local culture. From sophisticated dining rooms to relaxed neighbourhood favourites, it celebrates food that connects people to the region. Sustainability has also taken centre stage in recent years. Awards such as Michelin’s Green Star, alongside independent recognitions like Sustainable Restaurant Awards, shine a light on chefs and businesses that prioritise ethical sourcing, waste reduction and environmental responsibility. These accolades reflect a growing belief that true culinary excellence is not just about what is on the plate, but how it arrives there. Then there are the guides and awards that speak directly to diners. Bib Gourmand, awarded by Michelin, recognises restaurants offering exceptional food at accessible prices. It is often a favourite among locals, highlighting places where quality and value go hand in hand. Similarly, online platforms and communitydriven awards, shaped by customer experience rather than anonymous inspectors, now influence where and how people choose to eat. Chef-focused accolades also matter. Titles such as Best Chef Awards or regional chef 64 OCIO magazine

of the year honours recognise individual talent and leadership. They celebrate those who mentor young cooks, innovate behind the scenes and shape the future of dining beyond their own kitchens. Ultimately, these varied accolades remind us that excellence in food is multifaceted. It can be found in fine dining temples, humble family-run restaurants, cuttingedge kitchens and traditional taverns. While Michelin stars continue to sparkle brightly, they sit within a much richer constellation of recognition. For diners, this is good news. It means more stories to discover, more tables to explore and more reasons to celebrate the extraordinary diversity of the culinary world. n
