quick search around the internet and you’ll soon find plenty of websites that tell you how investing in Spain is a sure thing and you cannot lose, but let’s be realistic for a moment. Unless the person telling you this has verified clairvoyant skills, their guess is only as good as yours.

All markets to a certain degree are cyclical, this means you may inadvertently end up buying high and selling low. Without knowing for sure what the property market in Spain will be like in 1 or 5 years there will always be a degree of risk, as with any investment. están de alquiler en Reino Unido por la sencilla razón de que están ahorrando para comprar, o esperando a que el precio de la propiedad descienda, en España es distinto: en el mercado del alquiler prima la industria turística y los alquileres de jubilados y expatriados que huyen de los fríos y grises inviernos (incluso veranos) británicos.

Por tanto, sería justo decir que a no ser que el calentamiento global de pronto incremente en 10oC las temperaturas en los inviernos de Reino Unido, o en Blackpool de pronto se garantice un verano seco, muchos británicos seguirán optando por el sur de España para disfrutar del brillo del sol y el cielo azul garantizados.

Por tanto, podríamos apostar tranquilamente por que una propiedad de calidad y bien situada en España seguirá teniendo bastantes puntos para ser alquilada. Buying a property in the best and most desirable locations will nearly always guarantee you a degree of resilience in the rental market. While many people rent in the UK simply because they are saving to buy, or waiting for a property price dip, a large percentage of the Spanish rental market comes directly from either the holiday industry or from long term rentals for retirees and ex-pats escaping the cold grey British winters (or even summers for that matter). So it would be fair to say that unless global warming suddenly adds 10C to the winter temperatures in the UK or Blackpool suddenly experiences a guaranteed 3 month dry season, many Brits will continue to opt for Southern Spain for that guaranteed sunshine and blues skies.

Therefore, with careful planning it’s a pretty safe bet that any quality, well located property in Spain will have good potential for rental income. Furthermore holiday letting in Spain may well prove to be more resilient than letting out property in the fickle UK rental market for example.

t has often been said that there is nothing better than time spent messing about on the water, which is exactly what we did one sunny afternoon in August. We took advantage of a great offer from the boat hire guys at Almayate (Almuñecar too) and hired one of their ‘RIBS’ for two hours of fun with my wife and children. Upon arrival we were given a short safety briefing and in no time at all we were in the boat being lowered into the sea and we were off. We headed down the coast towards Benajarafe gently riding the waves and catching some lovely sunshine. On the way back up the coast the fun started. My two boys, aged 10 and 12 decided it was their turn to take the wheel...and the throttle. The game seemed to be trying to find the biggest boat on the sea and cross their wake in our rib, sending us bouncing over the waves and in turn throwing some heavy splashing at our only female on the boat, who would be quietly sunbathing. If I had allowed it, I am sure the boys could have kept this up for hours. Like I said, there is nothing more fun than messing about on the water!

e suele decir que no hay nada mejor que pasar un buen rato en el mar: esto fue justo lo que hicimos una tarde soleada de agosto. Aprovechamos una maravillosa oferta de arrendar un barco de una compañía de Almayate (aunque se puede hacerlo en Almuñeca también) y alquilamos uno de sus ‘RIBS’. Durante dos horas disfruté al máximo con mi mujer y mis hijos. Al llegar nos dieron una pequeña charla de seguridad y en un abrir y cerrar de ojos ya nos estábamos subiendo al barco para emprender nuestra aventura. Salimos hacia Benajarafe cabalgando las olas y tomando el sol. Al empezar el viaje de vuelta, empezó lo más divertido cuando mis dos hijos, de 10 y 12 años, decidieron que ya les tocaba a ellos estar al timón...¡y así controlar la velocidad! Parecía que lo que buscaban era acercarse lo más posible al barco más grande, cruzar su camino y como tal enfrentarnos a las grandes olas que, a su vez, salpicaban a la única mujer que nos acompañaba y que hasta ese momento había estado disfrutando de la oportunidad de tomar el sol tranquilamente. Si no les hubiera parado los pies, los niños habrían seguido de esa forma durante horas. Como dije al principio, ¡es que no hay nada mejor que pasar un buen rato en el mar!

W

hile it is important to get a sofa in just the right colour, it is just as important to get the quality right for your needs. Are you buying one to last or is it just for now? Will it be the centre of your living space or tucked away in a spare room?

Either way there are a few things you need to think about.

Firstly, understand frame construction. Ask about the construction of a sofa under consideration. The best are made from kiln-dried hardwoods (oak, maple, poplar, etc.), while inexpensive furniture is made from softer pine lumber. Interior construction is important as well. Cheaper furniture is stapled together and has haphazardly constructed corner bracing whilst better frames are securely screwed together. Now you also need to understand sofa seat

Does it have quality 8-way tied springs or the less expensive wire coils?

The next thing to decide upon is what style of sofa arm do you like. You can choose from armless, traditional rolled arm, curved English arm or a straight Parsons style.

The rolled arm has a flat front panel and is often outlined in cording.

English style is rounded at the front with fabric formed into sunbursttype pleats. Straight arm sofas are most often seen in contemporary settings.

Now we get into the design style and aesthetics of the unit you are buying. For example do you want a skirted sofa or one with bare legs?

Choose from leg styles that vary from heavy square chunks and wide bun feet to more delicate tapered legs

or carved and curved formal versions.

Legs are usually available in a number of finishes as well.

And the cushions, how many do you like on a sofa and what style do you prefer?

One cushion offers a clean modern look while two or three are traditional. When you sit on the cushions, do they stay in place or do the corners flare up? Are they attached to the frame with a clip to hold them down? Do you prefer the look of loose back cushions which give you the option of turning the pillows as needed.

Remember of course that attached backs won’t need fluffing or rearranging. The cushion and pillow filling are important to the feel of a sofa. Upholstery foam is inexpensive and comes in several thicknesses and weights, however the best cushions have down fillings. All-down cushions must be fluffed daily, though another option uses down pads wrapped around a core of foam. Understand these options for the sofa you want and which might be best for you.

Con respecto a los almohadones de los sofás, ¿cuántos te gusta tener?, y ¿qué estilo prefieres? Un solo almohadón ofrece una visión limpia y moderna, mientras que dos o tres dan un toque más tradicional. Cuando te sientas sobre ellos, se mantienen en su sitio, o las esquinas se levantan? ¿Están unidos al sofá mediante un enganche, para mantenerlos fijos? ¿Prefieres que queden sueltos los almohadones, de forma que puedas girar los cojines como haga falta?

Obviamente recuerda que los traseros que van pegados al sofá no tendrán que mullirse ni cambiarse por otros. El relleno del almohadón y el cojín es importante, dado que influyen en la sensación que transmite el sofá.

El relleno de espuma es barato y se presenta en muchos grosores y pesos; sin embargo, los mejores cojines son aquellos que tienen poco relleno. Estos últimos deben mullirse diariamente, aunque existe otra opción: el empleo de almohadillas bajeras enrolladas en un centro de espuma. is soft and durable while leather is long-lasting and attractive. Velvets and other fabrics look lovely but may may not offer the same durability as say leather and chenile. The fabric is always going to be a personal choice and in some cases it is the most important choice bearing in mind your new sofa is going to be a part of your life for many years to come.

So that’s about it to get you started. Follow these few simple tips and I am sure you will be sitting comfortably in no time at all. n

L

a mayoría de la gente no conoce (o no se preocupa por) el origen de la electricidad que llega a sus casas, mientras que sus aparatos funcionen cuando les haga falta. Este desconocimiento gusta a la empresa.

Después de todo, si nos percatásemos de que el 93,9% de la energía que todos consumimos NO proviene de recursos renovables (y se pueden agotar), podríamos buscar una alternativa. Y obviamente esto no beneficia a la empresa de suministro.

El hecho es que utilizar la energía solar, eólica y geotérmica es la forma más fácil, segura y barata de generar electricidad para nuestros hogares. Actualmente sólo el 0,2% del suministro de energía de nuestro país proviene de estas fuentes renovables. ¿Por qué? Porque las empresas de suministro nos han convencido de que son los únicos que pueden garantizarnos electricidad de forma continua - ¡sin importar lo que cueste!

Producir electricidad no es realmente complicado en absoluto, y se centra principalmente en el aprovechamiento del sol, el viento y el suelo sobre el que pisamos.

Muchos hemos visto turbinas eólicas en algún momento de su vida, pero ¿sabes cómo funcionan? Bueno, no resulta difícil comprender el concepto que se esconde tras el término tecnología de turbinas eólicas. El viento sopla, y hace girar las aspas de la turbina. Estas aspas están conectadas a un eje que gira con ellas y está pegado a un generador que da lugar a la electricidad; esta se envía a una subestación. Es un procedimiento simple, pero obviamente no sirve para practicarlo en casa.

Sin embargo, el sol es una historia totalmente distinta. Todos conocemos la energía solar pero, ¿sabemos cómo funciona? Bien, básicamente el sol produce luz blanca, y las placas solares que nosotros estamos acostumbrados a ver atrapan esta luz haciendo uso de células fotovoltaicas; la longitud de onda que se genera se transforma en electricidad,

como por arte de magia. Uniendo grupos de estas células fotovoltaicas (formando lo que conocemos como panel solar), se genera la electricidad suficiente para tu hogar. Es estupendo, estamos hablando de la tecnología en su máxima expresión, ¿pero es tan moderna como se dice?

La energía solar no es un tema nuevo; siempre ha existido. Esta técnica se ha enseñado en los colegios de todo el planeta desde hace mucho tiempo, y siempre ha sido un tema importante en el campo de la ciencia.

Lo más impresionante es que incluso la civilización Occidental celebra cada año el regreso del sol, siguiendo los pasos de sus antecesores. Se considera un Dios en muchas culturas, y se le reza en muchas partes del mundo.

No podemos tomar una fecha exacta en la que la energía solar se utilizó por primera vez, pero bien sabemos que a las civilizaciones griegas y romanas se les obligaba a hacer uso de la energía solar pasiva en las construcciones para captar el calor y la luz solar.

ost people don’t know (or care) where their electricity comes from, as long as their appliances work when they need them.

The utility companies like it that way.

After all, if we realised that 93.9% of the energy that we all consume does NOT come from renewable sources (and will eventually run out), then we may look for an alternative. And that’s not good for the utility company’s business.

The fact is that using the power generated from the sun, the wind and the underground heat is the absolute easiest, safest and cheapest way to generate electricity for our homes. Yet, only 0.2% of Spains national energy supply comes from these renewable sources. Why? Because the utility companies have convinced us all that they are the only ones who can supply our homes with a constant source of electricity – no matter what the cost!

Most of us simply don’t know the benefits of generating renewable energy ourselves, and have no idea how easy it is to do – because we haven’t been told!

We all just keep paying �1,000s a year in electricity without having a clue that there is a much better way...

Making electricity isn’t really hard at all and predominantly focuses around the use of the sun, wind and the ground we walk on.

Many people have seen wind turbines at some point or another in their life, but do you know how wind turbines work?

Well, the concept behind the wind turbine technology is not that difficult to understand. The wind blows, which turns the turbine blades. These blades are connected to a shaft that turns with the blades, and is attached to a generator which creates electricity and sends it to a sub-station, simple but really not that practical for use in the home.

However, the sun is a different story altogether. We all know about solar energy but how does it work? Well, basically, the sun produces white light and the solar panels we are familiar with trap this light using a photo voltaic cell (PV), the resulting wavelength is turned into electricity, as if by magic. By linking groups of these PV Cells together (forming what we know as a solar panel), you make as much electricity as you need to power your home. That is fantastic I hear you say, modern technology at it’s finest, but is it so modern?

In fact, the subject of solar energy is not new, it has existed ever since the Earth has. The subject has been taught in schools around the world for a long time too and has always been a hot subject in the field of science.

One of the amazing facts is that even Western civilization celebrates the returning of the sun every year, following in the footsteps of their ancestors. It is considered to be a God in many cultures and is actually prayed to in many parts of the world.

We cannot pick an exact date when solar energy was first used but we do know the Greek and Roman civilizations were said to make full use of passive solar energy in building designs to capture the heat and light from the sun.

Archimedes, the Greek scientist who lived in 200 B.C., was said to concentrate on solar power technology and used it to set fire to an invading Roman fleet.

The Greek philosopher, Socrates has also talked about the essential benefits of a house facing south because it uses the heat of the sun to warm the house in the winter.

It is said that in the centuries after Christ, all Roman bath houses used passive solar

Otro aspecto fascinante de la energía renovable es la geotérmica. Este tipo de energía consiste en la obtención de calor del interior de la Tierra; esta palabra proviene del griego geo (Tierra) y therme (calor).

Básicamente esta tecnología emplea vapor y agua caliente producidos en la

Tierra para calentar los edificios o generar electricidad. La energía geotérmica es una fuente de energía renovable porque el agua se repone de forma natural con las lluvias y el calor se produce continuamente en el interior de la Tierra.

Mientras que las temperaturas en la superficie cambian mucho de un día a otro y de una estación del año a otra, las temperaturas a tres metros por debajo de la superficie de la Tierra se mantienen casi constantes, entre 10 y 15oC. En la mayor parte de las zonas esto significa que las temperaturas en la superficie suelen ser más altas que el aire en invierno y más frescas que el aire en verano. Las bombas de calor geotérmico hacen uso de las temperaturas constantes de la Tierra para calentar y refrescar los edificios.

Transfieren el calor desde el suelo (o el agua) a los edificios en invierno y el proceso contrario en verano. Obviamente hay mucho más de lo que observa a simple vista en lo que respecta a energía renovable, y la nueva tecnología se está desarrollando diariamente. While temperatures above ground change a lot from day to day and season to season, temperatures in the upper 10 feet of the Earth’s surface hold nearly constant between 50 and 60 degrees fahrenheit. For most areas, this means that soil temperatures are

usually warmer than the air in winter and cooler than the air in summer. Geothermal heat pumps use the Earth’s constant temperatures to heat and cool buildings.

They transfer heat from the ground (or water) into buildings in winter and reverse the process in the summer. Of course there is so much more to renewable energy than meets the eye and new technology is being developed on what appears a daily basis. Renewable energy is clever, interesting and more to the point absolutely necessary for the continued survival of our planet.By choosing to go green you not only put cash back into your own pockets but you can help reverse global warming.

I

recently visited Algarrobo Costa on a balmy Saturday evening and I can confirm that Algarrobo Costa has just become the place to be on a Saturday night. The street vendors with their floodlit market stalls were busy and the people were out in the bars and restaurants enjoying the international cuisine and beverages that are on offer along the fabulous beachside promenade. At the heart of all this action was Cafe Bar Lolita. Every Saturday evening (from 23.00h) the night air fills with the sound of live music from the small band that take up residence on the promenade, right outside the entrance to Lolita. The crowds gather to hear the awsome female lead vocal belting out some of the all time classics. The many clients kept the cocktail bar busy and the waiters were back and forth to the tables with cold beers, wine, coffee and spirits from the equally busy interior bar area. I sat with a cold beer, listening to the music and simply taking in the fun and friendly atmosphere. I was there on a work project of course but next week... I will return with friends!

Los vendedores ambulantes con sus puestos muy bien iluminados estaban concurridos y los bares y restaurantes estaban llenos de gente que disfrutaba de la amplia gama de comidas y bebidas internacionales que se ofrecen a lo largo de este maravilloso paseo marítimo. En el pleno corazón de todo esto se encontraba el Café Bar Lolita. Cada sábado a partir de las 23.00 el aire de la costa se llena de música en vivo de un pequeño grupo musical que toca en el mismo paseo en la entrada del bar Lolita. Las gentes se reúnen para escuchar la extraordinaria voz de la cantante que entretiene con una amplia gama de canciones conocidas. Los muchos clientes hacían que los camareros estuvieran ocupados toda la noche sirviendo cocteles deliciosos, cervezas frías, vino, café y cacharros tanto a las mesas de fuera como a la zona del bar en el interior del local. Yo me senté fuera con una buena cerveza escuchando la música y disfrutando del buen ambiente que me rodeaba. Aunque esa noche estuve allí por motivos de trabajo, ¡volveré otra vez con mis amigos!

quare toes, crocodile skin, triple-buckles, and bohemian fringing are just some of the things you might not have been expecting to come back into fashion so soon, and yet here they are. So, where shall we start? Lets go with stilettos. Stilettos are back. Well, it’s not that they ever went anywhere but they’re once again dominating the runways, and that is to say that the chunky-heeled revolution is (for the most part) over. One thing we are seeing though is a hybrid of platform and stiletto, a hidden platform in the front part of the shoe, with a super-tall stiletto heel at the back. Stilettos are

streamlined, elegant, and sexy. The higher they are, the hotter they look, but of course they don’t offer much support for one’s feet. Not that ergonomics is really on anyone’s mind when we are looking at designer shoes!

Tapered heels: Heels that start thick at the top and taper down, often with a curve, into a stiletto-esque point at the bottom.

They’re a sexy, interesting and modern style which can really spice up an outfit. Not as much a classic shape, so buy them if you intend to get a lot of wear out of them over the next few seasons. Squared-off toes: It’s been a while since square

e punta cuadrada, de piel de cocodrilo, con triple hebilla y con bordeados bohemios son sólo algunas de las opciones que quizá no esperabas que volviesen a estar de moda tan pronto, y ya están aquí. Así que, ¿por dónde empezamos? Vamos con los tacones de aguja. Los tacones de aguja vuelven. Realmente nunca se fueron, pero una vez más dominan las pasarelas, lo cual quiere decir que se ha terminado la revolución de los tacones anchos (o en su mayoría). Sin embargo vemos una mezcla entre plataforma y tacón de aguja, una plataforma escondida en la parte delantera del zapato, con un gran tacón de aguja en la parte trasera. Los tacones de aguja son aerodinámicos, elegantes y sexys. Cuanto más altos, más atractivos son, pero por supuesto no ofrecen mucha comodidad a nuestros pies. Precisamente cuando buscamos zapatos de diseño no pensamos precisamente en que sea ergonómico.

Tacones con forma de cuña: Son tacones anchos por la parte de arriba y más estrechos por abajo, a menudo curvados, con un punto de tacón de aguja al final.

Tienen un estilo sexy, interesante y moderno, que realmente puede animar al conjunto. No tiene precisamente una forma clásica, así que cómpralos si piensas comprar más ropa en las próximas temporadas.

toed shoes have been popular and it’s now their time to return, but with a difference. Before we all start having nightmares of those awful clunky dramatically square shoes that were cool way back when, the newer style has a tapered in toe with a short blunt nose rather than a fully squared toe. It’s a nice, modern alternative to the lady-like roundtoe, edgy, but not as harsh as a sharp point.

Pointed Toe: It was only in recent memory that razor-sharp pointy toes were in and yet, here they are again. It feels a bit soon, but with stilettos back in the pointed toe was never going to be far away.

Styles, materials, and details: It’s all in the detail this autumn and winter. From buckles to straps to laces to studs, it’s all there. As long as it’s interesting and unique, go for it. Suede makes a strong comeback, as does reptile skin, while mixed materials (combinations of leather, suede, metalics, all on the one piece) are prominent. Boots are anything from ankle to knee to over-the-knee.

And whilst on that subject, lets look at the above knee boots which are leading the way in footwear this season. Every socialite and offduty model was photographed in her over-theknee quilted Chanel boots last year. This year, above the knee boots are most popular in heeled versions (rather than small or flat heels) with suede or leather the materials of choice.

The look is very hot. Perfect over tights, long socks, jeans or trousers.

Mary-Jane with a Twist: The high-heeled MaryJane was a big shoe trend last year but they were mostly sleek, feminine styles in patent leathers and with rounded toes. 2009 sees Mary-Jane back with a twist, or lots of twists actually. Double or even triple buckles are one common defining detail along with bright colours, luxe fabrics or sharply pointed toes.

Whatever it may be, the bottom line is it must stand out.

Reptile fabrics: Alligator, crocodile, lizard, snake... reptilian skins are a major trend choice for 2009’s Autumn footwear. The feeling of reptile leather is that of something exotic and luxurious. In 2009 its use is in the most classic of ways; subtle, refined and yet bold.

Along with above knee boots, fringed boots are the talk of the town, adding bohemian chic to the comfort of suede. Short fringed ankleboots in leather or suede can look sexy with bare legs or tights. They can add a ruffian charm to a sophisticated outfit, or be thrown together with an everyday outfit for casual chic. n 38 OCIO magazine

Es una estupenda y moderna alternativa a la punta redondeada de mujer refinada, provocativo, pero no tan dura como con punta. Una sutil punta cuadrada es una buena opción para 2009.

Zapato con punta: hace poco que los zapatos de puntas afiladas estaban de moda, y de nuevo los tenemos aquí.

Parece pronto, pero es cierto que los tacones de aguja y con punta nunca se habían dejado de llevar.

Estilos, materiales y detalles: esto es lo que interesa este otoño e invierno. De hebillas a correas, de cordones a tachuelas, todo lo tenemos aquí. Es interesante y único, así que consigue uno. El ante ha vuelto fuerte, al igual que la piel de reptil, mientras que los materiales mixtos (combinaciones de piel, ante, metal, todo en una sola pieza) son prominentes. Las botas pueden ser de tobillo a rodilla o por encima de la rodilla.

Hablando de botas, mencionemos también de las botas por encima de la rodilla, que están teniendo éxito esta temporada. Todas las modelos de alta gama fueron fotografiadas el año pasado, fuera de las pasarelas, con sus botas Chanel acolchadas por encima de la rodilla. Este año las botas por encima de la rodilla son más famosas en sus versiones con tacones altos (en vez de con tacones pequeños o planos) con opción de elegir entre ante o piel.

Son increíbles. Quedan perfectas con medias, calcetas, vaqueros o pantalones de pitillo. “Loud and bold” (Llamativo y Descarado) es el nombre del juego de botas por encima de la rodilla.

Mary-Jane with a Twist: Los tacones altos Mary-Jane estuvieron de moda el año pasado, pero eran mayormente estilos elegantes y femeninos en piel y con puntas redondeadas. En 2009 se ven de nuevo zapatos Mary-Jane con una vuelta, o con muchas. Hebillas dobles e incluso triples son un detalle que tienen en común, junto con colores brillantes, tejidos de lujo o con terminación en punta.

Sea como sea, debe destacarse. Los tacones altos MaryJanes consiguen una combinación de dulces colegialas con sexys empeines. Busca los detalles interesantes aparte de las estupendas hebillas y cierres apretados de 2009.

Tejidos de reptiles: caimán, cocodrilo, lagarto, serpiente...las pieles de reptiles son la opción con más tendencia para los zapatos del verano de 2009. El hecho de llevar piel de reptil da un toque exótico y lujoso. En 2009 se ha utilizado en sus formas más clásicas: sutil, refinado y todavía llamativo.

Rechaza las copias de piel de serpiente e imitaciones baratas; no importa si es verdadera o falsa, aquí estamos hablando de la calidad.

Además de las botas por encima de la rodilla, las botas con flecos están a la orden del día, añadiendo una elegancia bohemia a la comodidad del ante.

Los botines de piel con flecos pueden parecer sexys, dejando las piernas o medias al aire. Pueden añadir encanto a un conjunto sofisticado, o llevarse con la ropa de diario para dar un toque elegante a la ropa informal. n OCIO magazine

Well, in general, a healthy person doesn’t smoke, is at a healthy weight, eats healthy and exercises. Sounds simple, doesn’t it but, if it were that easy, we’d all be effortlessly fit and healthy...and we are not.

The trick to feeling good is making small changes, taking a little exercise, adding fruit to your cereal, having an extra glass of water every day, these are just a few ways you can start living healthy without drastic changes.

élez-Málaga is the administrative centre of the Axarquia and the largest of the region’s towns. Today VélezMálaga is home to some 60,000 inhabitants working and living throughout the district. With that number increasing each year it is one of Andalucia’s fastest growing towns. Situated 35 kms east of Málaga and just 4 kms inland from the nearby coastal neighbour Torre del Mar, the history of the town can be dated back to prehistoric times. Although like many towns and villages of the region, it is the remains of the Muslim occupation of Vélez-Málaga ending in 1487, which is still most evident in the town today.

Most noticeable of the towns links to it’s Arabic past is it’s most visible land mark, the 13th century Moorish hill top fortress La Fortaleza which stands high above the old town district.

For most of its history the economy of VélezMálaga has relied heavily on agriculture, where cultivation and farming of the fertile plains around the town and along the valley of the Rio Vélez has led to all manor of crops being successfully produced. Although now very much in decline, during the last century VélezMálaga became known for its sugar cane refineries and olive oil processing plants .

Like most of the region Vélez-Málaga is now looking to the tourism and leisure industries to provide employment and future prosperity for the town. As a result there is an ongoing programme of restoration works and new projects funded by the Ayuntamiento which are both improving the town’s amenities and maintaining its cultural heritage and at the same time adding to the town’s overall appeal.

Hoy, Vélez-Málaga es el hogar de unos 60.000 habitantes trabajando y viviendo en todo el distrito. Ese número aumenta cada año, es una de las ciudades de más rápido crecimiento de Andalucía. Situado a 35 kilómetros al este de Málaga y a tan sólo 4 kilómetros hacia el interior desde la cercana costa vecina de Torre del Mar, la historia de la ciudad se remonta a tiempos prehistóricos. Aunque, como muchas ciudades y pueblos de la región son los restos de la ocupación musulmana de Vélez-Málaga, terminada en 1487, lo que es aún más evidente en la ciudad actual.

El enlace más notable que vincula el pueblo a su pasado árabe es la marca más

visible del territorio, el fuerte musulmán del siglo XIII en la cumbre de la montaña, La Fortaleza, que se encuentra muy por encima de la zona del casco antiguo. Para la mayoría de su historia, la economía de Vélez-Málaga ha dependido fuertemente de la agricultura, donde el cultivo y la labranza de las llanuras fértiles alrededor del pueblo y a lo largo del valle del Río Vélez han llevado a todas las haciendas de cultivos a ser producidas con éxito.

Aunque ahora muy en declive, durante el siglo pasado, Vélez-Málaga se hizo conocido por sus refinerías de caña de azúcar y plantas de procesamiento de aceite de oliva.

of interest to visit including some of the town’s numerous churches which through their various architectural styles help to plot the town’s history. The centre of town is Plaza de Las Carmelitas and here you will find not only the Ayuntamiento but also the Convento de Jesus, Maria y Jose often referred to as Convento de Las Carmelitas. The convent was founded in 1669 and of particular interest are the historic paintings housed there. The land mark of Vélez-Málaga is undoubtedly La Fortaleza and Murallas Arabes or moorish town walls which date from the 13th century and are located in the old Arabic quarter of town. The tower was restored in 1992 and, whilst not open to the public, the surrounding gardens make for a pleasant spot from which there are some spectacular views across the Vélez-Málaga and Torre del Mar area.

In the centre of Vélez is the modern theatre Teatro del Carmen which has a regular programme of performances. These include traditional and classical music concerts, flamenco acts and literature readings.

In addition, regular art exhibitions are held both at the Palacio de Beniel in c/ Plaza Palacio and the recently opened Sala de Exposiciones in c/ Las Tiendas.

Activities: There are some good sports facilities both indoors and outdoors in Vélez-Málaga, including one of the region’s few indoor swimming pools. The town has a sports complex with an athletics stadium which doubles as the home of the local football team Vélez CF. The complex also has an Olympic size outdoor pool and numerous tennis, basketball and handball courts.

Nearby there is the Aquavelis water park and golf is available at the Baviera Golf Course.

Shopping: As you would imagine a town the size of Vélez-Málaga has an excellent selection of shops, throughout the town and also at the nearby shopping mall El Ingenio. The weekly market calls on a Thursday but there is also a daily covered fruit, vegetable, fish and meat market located in c/ Poeta Joaquin Lobato.

Poligino Industrial: In addition to the excellent shopping facilities in the town there is also the industrial/commercial area. This popular area of town has businesses catering for just about anything you could ever possibly want from tyres to sofas, motor cars to kitchens and everything in between.

Eating out: Eating out in Vélez-Málaga can be a lowkey affair centered mainly around the town’s numerous tapas bars and cafés or it can be as elegant and stylish as you wish. There are several excellent fried fish restaurants, restaurants serving local cuisine, the occasional restaurant offering a more international cuisine and numerous tapas and coffee bars in which to enjoy a little time out from your shopping.

Travel: Vélez-Málaga is served by good bus links from Málaga and Granada and there is also a regular local bus linking the town with Torre del Mar and Caleta de Vélez which stops at the El Ingenio shopping centre.

The tram link provides a popular and easy way to move between the town and the coast of Torre Del Mar. n

La marca de la tierra de Vélez-Málaga es, sin duda, La Fortaleza y Las Murallas Árabes o murallas de la ciudad morisca que datan del siglo XIII y se encuentran en el antiguo barrio árabe de la ciudad. La torre fue restaurada en 1992 y, aunque no esté abierta al público, los jardines que la rodean proporcionan un lugar agradable desde el cual hay unas vistas espectaculares a Vélez-Málaga y al área de Torre del Mar. En el centro de Vélez está el teatro moderno, Teatro del Carmen, que tiene un programa regular de actuaciones.

Esto incluye conciertos de música tradicional y clásica, actuaciones de flamenco y lecturas literarias. Además, exposiciones de arte se realizan periódicamente, en el Palacio de Beniel en la C/ Plaza Palacio, y en la recientemente inaugurada Sala de Exposiciones en la C/ Las Tiendas.

Actividades: Hay algunas buenas instalaciones deportivas tanto en interiores como al aire libre en Vélez-Málaga, entre ellas una de las pocas de la región, la piscina cubierta. El pueblo cuenta con un complejo deportivo con un estadio de atletismo, que hace doblete como sede del equipo local de fútbol, el Vélez CF. El complejo también cuenta con una piscina de tamaño olímpico, pistas de tenis al aire libre y numerosas canchas de baloncesto y balonmano. Cerca se encuentra el parque acuático Aquavelis y el golf está disponible en el campo de Baviera golf.

Compras: Como es de imaginar una ciudad del tamaño de Vélez-Málaga tiene una excelente selección de tiendas, en todo el pueblo y también en el centro comercial cercano, El Ingenio. Hay un mercadillo semanal, llamado de los jueves, pero también hay uno diario de frutas, verduras, pescado y mercado de carne que se encuentra en C/ Poeta Joaquín Lobato.

Polígono industrial: Adicionalmente a las instalaciones de excelentes tiendas en el pueblo, también hay una zona industrial y comercial. Esta popular zona de la ciudad tiene, posiblemente, empresas para casi cualquier cosa que usted pudiera querer, desde neumáticos a sofás, desde automóviles a cocinas y todo mezclado.

Comer: Comer en Vélez-Málaga puede ser un asunto sencillo, principalmente alrededor de la ciudad hay numerosos bares de tapas y cafés, o puede ser tan elegante y con tanto estilo como desee. l V8 se parece al DB9 en más pequeño, pero aunque se parecen, son completamente diferentes. El nuevo Aston tiene unas características distintas y suena de maravilla gracias a los importantes avances del motor Jaguar 4.3 litros. Los Aston Martin son tradicionalmente unos coches silenciosos y elegantes con pocas revoluciones, pero cuando la aguja pasa de las 4000 revoluciones, las válvulas de escape se abren, libera gases a su máxima potencia y un fuerte rugido invade el interior del coche y se extiende 8 kilómetros a la redonda.

Pero esto no debería ocurrir, ya que este vehículo tiene una estabilidad sin igual 58 OCIO magazine

y más control en las curvas que en las montañas rusas de Disneyworld. Nadie conduciría un DB9 de esta manera, pero el AMV8, nervioso y agresivo, está hecho para ello.

El interior es todo lujo con unos asientos de lo más cómodos a pesar de la suspensión firme. En este coche, la electrónica se limita a unos pocos botones de muy buena calidad, un potente sistema de audio en estéreo, un navegador por satélite incorporado en el salpicadero y un mensaje de bienvenida

que llama la atención al arrancar y confirma las virtudes de los Aston: “Potencia, Belleza, Esencia”.

Es un Aston Martin y es precioso, pero por debajo de unas líneas elegantes late un corazón rebelde. El AMV8 nos recuerda los coches de antaño, el estilo que Ford ha fabricado durante décadas, pero con la herencia, el prestigio, la opulencia y lo deportivo de un Aston Martin. Por todo ello puede que sea el mejor Aston Martin n fabricado.

its full head and a rasping scream haunts the cockpit and draws the attention of everyone within a five-mile radius.

There is an optional semi-automatic gearbox and a manual six-speed that is deliberately notchy and takes a heavyweight shove from the shoulder to drive the gears home. The brakes too take serious force to shed serious speed, which it does very well indeed. The steering wheel, light and playful at low speeds, weighs up to race car stiffness at more interesting velocities to provide that all important feedback. There is very little doubt, this is a real sportscar.

While the DB9, and all previous Aston Martins, glide over bumps, this little terrier skips and shuffles over them. The weight of the 1570kg car is always apparent, hunkering into bends, the Vantage will take you at phenomenal speeds through corners and with absolute confidence.

Should the back end step out of line, when the traction control is off or the road is wet, there’s a Limited Slip Differential to help catch the slide before it becomes a

crisis. It rarely would, as this machine has supreme natural balance and with the electronic aids turned off it can provide more controlled slides than Disneyworld.

Nobody would drive a DB9 this way, but the taut, aggressive AMV8 is made for it.

The interior is luxurious and the seats are more comfortable than a Mediterranean beach - providing invaluable support and isolation from the firm suspension on a long trek. Electronics are limited to a few sturdy buttons, a mighty stereo system and the Sat-Nav that folds flat to

the dash, and a rather flashy welcome message on start-up that extols the Aston virtues of: “Power, Beauty, Soul”.

It’s an Aston Martin and it’s beautiful, but underneath the elegant lines and well-spoken exterior beats the heart of a thug. The AMV8 is reminiscent of an old school muscle car, the kind Ford has been making for decades, infused with the sporting credibility, heritage, prestige and opulence of an Aston Martin. And that might just make this the very best Aston Martin in the world. n OCIO magazine

Shaken ...not stirred A

merica might get the blame for a lot of things these days but next time you’re tempted to join in remember there’s something for which we should thank them, the modern cocktail!. One of the earliest written references describing a cocktail appears in an American magazine from 1806, saying it is a stimulating liquor, composed of spirit of any kind, sugar, water and bitters.

The Martini was one of the first cocktails to be recognised and named - although there is some argument about who, when and where.

One early recipe included sweet red Vermouth, Old Tom Gin and aromatic bitters all garnished with a cherry. This gradually gave way to the dry white Vermouth, London Dry Gin and an olive combination that we recognise as a dry martini today.

By the beginning of the twentieth century there was a growing interest in cocktails on both sides of the Atlantic, but the1920 Prohibition Act in America banned the production, sale and serving of alcohol. Strangely enough, rather than being the death of the cocktail, prohibition led to more ingenious concoctions being invented – mainly to disguise the taste of the home-made, crudely-produced moonshine that was available!

Many have laid claim to being the inventor of the Margarita but perhaps most likely is that of Danny Negrete. Just before his brother’s wedding in 1936, Danny made up the cocktail and presented it to his future sister-in-law as a gift. Her name was, of course, Margarita.

During the second half of the twentieth century, cocktails featured in a number of films and in literature, all helping to enhance its image as a drink with a touch of class and sophistication.

James Bond is renowned for preferring his martini shaken not stirred and there is a good reason for this. Shaking chills the drink more quickly so the ice melts less resulting in a cooler, less diluted drink. Today the popularity of a cocktail has been revived and modernised with all manner of concoctions and names, even James Bond prefers a Mojito to a Martini these days...what is the world coming to? n

América podría tener la culpa de un montón de cosas estos días, pero la próxima vez que sienta la tentación de dejarse llevar por el recuerdo, hay algo que deberíamos agradecerles, ¡el cóctel moderno!. Una de las primeras referencias escritas que describen un cóctel aparece en una revista americana de 1806, diciendo que es un licor estimulante, compuesto por licor de cualquier tipo, azúcar, agua y amargos.

El Martini es uno de los primeros cócteles en ser reconocido y nombrado -aunque hay alguna discusión sobre quién, cuándo y dónde-. Una primera receta incluyó Vermut rojo dulce, Old Tom Gin y aromas amargos, todo adornado con una cereza. Esto dio paso gradualmente al Vermouth blanco seco, London Dry Gin y una aceituna para combinar que reconocemos en la actualidad como un martini seco.

A principios del siglo XX hubo un creciente interés en cócteles a ambos lados del Atlántico, pero 1920 la Ley de prohibición en América prohibió la producción, venta y servicio de alcohol.

Curiosamente, en lugar de la muerte del cóctel, la prohibición dio lugar a mezclas más ingeniosas, siendo inventadas -sobre todo para disimular el sabor de lo hecho en casa-, burdamente producidos a la luz de la luna ¡con lo que había disponible!

fter a very successful summer season in their new Torre Del Mar location, it appears the move from Archez to the coast was well worth the upheaval.

Many of the existing inland clients along with a whole new client base along the coast have found their way to Bhua Luang this summer to enjoy the cuisine prepared by Noi and the hospitality bestowed upon them by Chris. Naturally a Thai restaurant arriving on the coast has caused much excitment amongst the tourists and residents alike. We asked Chris about the almost instant success of the Torre Del Mar restaurant and he commented that “Thai cuisine is very popular all over the world but still many people do not understand the cuisine and, to a degree, they are afraid of the menu. However, we are a friendly team here and we make it easy for newcomers to navigate our menu that ranges from fiery hot to subtle and mild and, is always tasty.

We want our customers to feel very comfortable in what could be their first Thai dining experience. This, along with the fabulous food Noi prepares in the kitchen, is the key to our success.” From my own experience of Bhua Luang, and I am a seasoned Thai diner, I like the fact that the food is all freshly prepared on the premises, even on a busy night, you just know the meal you are about to enjoy has been freshly prepared there and then, just for you. Nothing frozen, nothng pre-prepared, just great produce cooked as only Noi knows how. If you are yet to visit Bhua Luang, I suggest you do so at your earliest convenience, you will love it! n

espués de una exitosa temporada de verano en su nueva ubicación en Torre del Mar, parece que el cambio de Árchez a la costa mereció la pena.

Muchos de los anteriores clientes de interior junto con el nuevo cliente con sede en la costa ha encontrado su modo de disfrutar este verano en Bhua Luang de la cocina preparada por Noi y la hospitalidad que le concedía Chris. Un restaurante tailandés que llegue a la costa causa, naturalmente, mucho entusiasmo entre los turistas y los residentes. Preguntamos a Chris acerca del éxito casi inmediato del restaurante en Torre del Mar y él comentó que la “cocina tailandesa es muy popular en todo el mundo, pero todavía mucha gente no entiende la cocina o, a lo sumo, ellos tienen miedo del menú. Sin embargo, somos un equipo amable aquí y hacemos fácil para los recién llegados que naveguen por nuestro menú y se sientan muy cómodos en la qué podría ser su primera experiencia de cena tailandesa. Ésta, pienso que es la clave

de nuestro éxito, junto con las fabulosas comidas que Noi prepara en la cocina por supuesto.” Por mi propia experiencia en Bhua Luang, y soy un comensal tailandés experimentado, me gusta el hecho de que la comida sea toda recién preparada en el establecimiento, incluso en una noche concurrida, usted ya sabe que la comida que está a punto de disfrutar ha sido recién preparada, es sólo para usted.

Nada congelado, nada pre-cocinado, únicamente grandes productos cocinados como solamente Noi sabe. ¡Si no ha visitado Bhua Luang todavía, sugiero que lo haga lo antes posible, lo adorará! n

Renewable Energy...good for the planet and great for your budget Words by Michael Hartford Translation by: Axarlingua

L

a historia cuenta que en 1492, Cristóbal Colón zarpó hacia el Nuevo Mundo en busca de especias y esencias aromáticas.

En su lugar, volvió con chocolate, vainilla y, quizás lo más importante, con la guindilla, que demostró ser un fantástico sustituto de la pimienta en grano tan demandada.

Salsa: Fantástica para acompañar los pescados a la plancha o los pinchos de tortilla española. Picar dos aguacates en trozos pequeños y mezclarlos con tres tomates grandes previamente vaciados de su corazón y pepitas, y cortados en cubitos. Removerlo todo con una cebolla roja muy picada, un pimiento jalapeño o un chile serrano picado sin pepitas, el zumo de dos o tres limas, una cucharada sopera de aceite de oliva, una cucharadita de sal y media cucharadita de pimienta negra molida. Si se quiere, también se le puede añadir un poco de ajo picado, cilantro o una pizca de comino molido. Es exquisito, créame.

Pasta: Una manera de alegrar un plato básico y convertirlo en un manjar. Con 66 OCIO magazine

esta sencilla receta nos alejamos del clásico aceite de oliva y ajo para nuestros platos de pasta. Poner a hervir agua con sal para cocer 450 gramos de espaguetis.

Mientras se cuece la pasta, calentar el aceite de oliva virgen extra (cinco cucharadas) en una sartén pequeña.

Echar dos dientes de ajo picados y un chile rojo picado muy fino. Freír a fuego medio lento y cuando los ajos empiecen a dorarse, retirarlos inmediatamente del fuego. Escurrir la pasta y mezclarla con este aceite picante.

Espolvorear unas cucharaditas de perejil picado y volver a mezclar antes de servir.

Si lo prefiere menos picante, poner los pimientos enteros y mezclar antes de servir.

Chilli Vodka: Estamos seguros de que el sabor de un Vodka con guindilla animará sus próximas fiestas o reuniones de amigos.

Preparación: corte a lo largo un chile rojo y dos verdes. Métalos en una botella de Vodka de 500 ml. Si lo desea, añada unos granitos de pimienta. Agite la botella

y consérvela en un lugar fresco (si puede encontrar alguno, ¡claro!) Déjela durante un mínimo de dos semanas y un máximo de tres meses. ¡El resultado final será el mejor Bloody Mary del mundo! ¿Lo sabía? * Cuantas más pequeñas son las guindillas, más picantes. * Debe tener siempre mucho cuidado al manipularlas. H

istory says that in 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail for the New World. He went in search of spices and aromatics.

Instead he returned with chocolate, vanilla and perhaps most importantly, the chilli pepper, which proved to be a superb substitute for the much sought after peppercorns.

Salsa: This is great with grilled fish, as well as for dipping into with tortilla chips. Chop two advocados into small pieces and mix with three large tomatoes that have been deseeded, cored and diced. Stir in a finely chopped red onion, a deseeded and minced jalapeno or serrano chilli, the juice of two or three limes, a tablespoon of olive oil, a teaspoon of salt and a half teaspoon of ground black pepper. If you want, you can also add some minced garlic, finely chopped coriander or a sprinkling of ground cumin. Trust me, this is fabulous.

Pasta: Liven up this common food staple,

creating much more of a dish than the standard olive oil and garlic. Cook 450g of spaghetti in plenty of well salted boiling water. While it’s cooking warm five tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil in a small pan over a medium low heat. Drop in two finely minced garlic cloves and a very finely chopped red chilli. Saute gently until the garlic begins to golden.

Remove from the heat immediately.

Drain the pasta and toss in the spicy oil. Sprinkle over a few tablespoons of finely chopped flat leaf parsley and toss again before serving. For a gentler heat, add whole chillies to the dish and remove before serving.

Chilli Vodka: Chilli flavoured Vodka will most certainly liven up your next drinks party. Split lengthwise one red and two green chillies.

Drop them into a 500ml bottle of Vodka.

Add a few peppercorns if you wish. Shake the bottle and leave in a cool place (if you can find one of course), for a minimum of two weeks and no more than three months. The finished product makes the

omo la mayoría de los pueblos de la región, Torrox es de origen árabe, con un laberinto de callejuelas de casas blancas entrando y saliendo de la plaza principal.

La atmósfera es de una pequeña ciudad que cuidadosamente va emprendiendo sus negocios y que conserva con éxito su carácter. El turismo no ha afectado mucho al pueblo e incluso en temporada alta, el pueblo es un lugar tranquilo y pacífico para visitarlo. Sin embargo, su encanto y proximidad a la costa en los últimos años ha llevado a un aumento en el número de extranjeros propietarios de inmuebles.

Abajo, en la costa, la primera impresión de Torrox Costa podría llevarle a creer que esto sólo es otra franja de litoral español cediendo al turismo de bloques de apartamentos. Sin embargo, una inspección más detallada le demostrará algo más.

El hecho es que todas las casas de los bloques de apartamentos privados en su mayoría son propiedad ya españoles o alemanes y no fue hasta junio de 2003 que se inauguró el primer hotel de turistas aquí. Lo que significa que, hasta ahora, a

pesar de la disponibilidad de muchos alojamientos, Torrox Costa ha sido vendido infinitamente más barato. La publicidad se ha limitado a las recomendaciones “boca a boca” y en realidad todo el destino turístico se ha mantenido fuera de los folletos de vacaciones en general. El resultado es que, fuera de los meses de apogeo de Julio y Agosto, el destino turístico es muy tranquilo, se nota mucha calma.

La zona costera de Torrox se extiende por 3 kilómetros y el corazón del centro turístico es el Paseo Marítimo, un paseo marítimo peatonal plano.

Partiendo de El Faro, el paseo marítimo va hacia el oeste por toda la longitud de la playa principal, Playa Ferrara. La mayoría de tiendas de Torrox, bares y restaurantes se encuentran bien a lo largo del Paseo Marítimo o entre los edificios de apartamentos que llegan a la carretera principal de la costa.

Al este de El Faro está la parte menos desarrollada de Torrox Costa. Las instalaciones en general aquí no son tan buenas quizás como estas al oeste de El Faro, pero este tramo de costa tiene un atractivo propio. Aquí las playas son más escarpadas y

ike most of the villages in the region, Torrox has Arabic origins with a labyrinth of narrow winding streets of white washed houses radiating up and out from the main square.

The atmosphere is of a small town quietly going about its business and successfully retaining its character. Tourism has not greatly affected the Pueblo, even in high season. However its charm and close proximity to the coast has in recent years led to an increase in both tourism and the number of overseas property owners.

Down on the coast, first impressions could lead you to believe that here is just another strip of Spanish coastline yielding to tower-block tourism.

Closer inspection however will prove something else. The fact is that all the apartment blocks house private apartments most of which are owned either by Spanish, German or English nationals and it wasn’t until June 2003 that the first tourist hotel was opened here. What this means is that until now, despite the availability of plenty of accommodation, Torrox Costa has been vastly undersold. Exposure has been limited to ‘word of

mouth’ recommendations and in truth the whole resort has been kept out of the mainstream holiday brochures. The result being that outside of the peak months of July and August the resort has a very easy-going, calm feel to it.

The coastal area of Torrox stretches for 3 kms and at the heart of the resort is the Paseo Maritimo a flat pedestrianised promenade. Starting at El Faro or the lighthouse, the promenade runs west along the entire length of the main beach, Playa Ferrara, Most of Torrox’s shops, bars and restaurants are to be found either along the Paseo Maritimo or in amongst the apartment buildings that stretch back to the main coast road.

To the east of El Faro is the less developed side of Torrox Costa. The general facilities here are not as good perhaps as those to the west of El Faro but this stretch of coast has an appeal of its own. Here the beaches are more rugged and natural where it is still possible to pull your car off the road and park virtually on the beach. A little further down from El Faro there are also some excellent chiringuitos and lovely sandy beaches to enjoy. Torrox has,

arguably, as many good quality restaurants than any other village or town east of Malaga. This combined with a vast selection of coffee bars, ice cream parlours, tapas bars, snack bars and just bars makes Torrox Costa a great place to visit for a day at the beach, lunch with friends or for a great night out. Torrox Pueblo may be less cosmopolitan than the coastal region but there are some great places to eat, mainly centred around the main square, Plaza Constitucíon with it’s fabulous fountain. This is simply a very nice place to be to relax, catch up with friends or just watch the world go by. And if you are in no hurry to rejoin the hustle and bustle and you think a stop over would be nice then make your way to Hotel La Casa just off the main plaza. So whether you fancy lunch with friends, a quiet romantic night with a loved one or a more lively fun filled evening, you will certainly find Torrox to your liking. The only question is where to start...Pueblo or Costa?

Torrox tiene, posiblemente, restaurantes más finos que cualquier otro pueblo o ciudad al este de Málaga. Esto, combinado con una amplia selección de cafeterías, heladerías, bares de tapas, y bares de aperitivos, hace de Torrox un gran lugar para visitar al salir de noche.

Torrox Pueblo puede ser menos cosmopolita que la región costera pero también hay algunos buenos lugares para comer, principalmente en torno a la plaza principal, la plaza de la Constitución tiene una fuente fabulosa. Este es simplemente un lugar muy agradable para relajarse, charlar con los amigos o sólo ver el mundo pasar. Y si no tienen prisa para reunirse con el bullicio y cree que una parada podría ser agradable, entonces ponga rumbo al hotel La Casa junto a la plaza principal. Así que para cualquier almuerzo elaborado con los amigos, una romántica noche tranquila con un ser querido o una diversión más animada toda la noche, seguro que encontrará Torrox a su gusto.
