T

here has never been a better time to take up photography.

The digital revolution has made cameras more sophisticated, easier to use, smaller and, ultimately, more affordable. Add to the mix an increasingly wide choice of image software, which allows you to do anything from edit your photos to exhibit them professionally online, and it’s no wonder that photography is booming. But while some of us may think we have visual sensibilities all too often our efforts end up having the usual embarrassing flaws – red eyes, blurred backgrounds and feet that end up mysteriously missing from the subject’s body. To help you in your quest for the perfect photograph, we’ve put together some tips and guides on what to do, when and how.

1. Avoid placing subjects centre-frame – they should be looking or moving into space within it. Subjects placed on a ‘cardinal point’ (where the image is split into thirds) have more visual interest.

2. Stand on a chair or crouch down low, 624 OCIO OCIOmagazine axarquía

anything to alter the way you look at the subject. Change the height you shoot from and you’ll instantly improve the image.

3. Red-eye effect occurs when the flash reflects off the retina in the back of the eye. If you can, move the position of the flash: with built-in flashes this is difficult, but many cameras have red-eye reduction, which precedes the flash with short, lowpower flashes to contract the pupils, allowing less light in. If that fails, try shining a light at your subject to force the pupils to contract.

4. If the subject’s eyes are not in focus, it is harder to form a connection, so we’re less likely to appreciate the image. So, when taking pictures of people or animals, always make sure you focus on the eyes to make them as sharp as possible.

5. Most built-in flashes are only suitable for subjects up to three or four metres away. If this is not the case, turn off the flash and record only the ambient light for a better picture.

6. Blurring often happens in night shots.

For good exposure, enough light must reach the digital sensor. Increase the ISO number if possible (this helps the camera in low-light conditions). And keep the camera steady – use a tripod or rest it on a table.

7. The contrast between ground and sky is too great for the camera to record. If you include lots of sky in your image, the camera will expose for this, making the ground too dark. If lots of ground is in your image, the reverse happens. If you can, try exposure lock, which helps balance things.

8. Your camera assumes that everything is a mid-tone grey, so when photographing snow for example, increase the exposure to brighten the snow and make it look white.

9. Ensure horizons are straight in the viewfinder before taking the picture.

10. Some people rely on automatic functions which is ok, but don’t let the camera totally control the image-making!

And that is it. Simple really, now off you n go and enjoy your photography.

unca ha habido un momento mejor para dedicarse a la fotografía. La revolución digital ha hecho cámaras más sofisticadas, más fáciles de utilizar, más pequeñas y, últimamente, más económicas. Añada a la combinación una gama cada vez más extensa de software de imagen para elegir, que le permita hacer algo de edición con sus fotos para exhibirlas profesionalmente online, y no es de extrañar que esa fotografía sea un bombazo. Pero mientras algunos de nosotros podemos pensar que tenemos sensibilidad visual, con demasiada frecuencia nuestros esfuerzos acaban por tener los vergonzosos defectos habituales -ojos rojos, fondos borrosos y pies que misteriosamente desaparecen del cuerpo del sujeto. Para ayudarle en su búsqueda de la fotografía perfecta, hemos recogido algunas pautas y guías de qué hacer, cuándo y cómo.

1. Evite colocar al sujeto en el centro del marco, ellos deben estar mirando o

moviéndose en el espacio interior. Los sujetos colocados en un “punto cardinal” (donde la imagen se parte en tres) tienen mayor interés visual.

2. De pié en una silla o agachado, algo que cambie la forma en que mira al sujeto.

Cambie la altura desde la que dispara y mejorará instantáneamente la imagen.

3. El efecto de ojos rojos se produce cuando el flash se refleja en la retina del fondo del ojo. Si puede, cambie la posición del flash: con flashes incorporados esto es difícil, pero muchas cámaras tienen la reducción de ojos rojos, que preceden el flash con destellos cortos y de baja potencia para contraer las pupilas, permitiendo que entre menos luz. Si eso falla, intente deslumbrar con una luz al sujeto para forzar la contracción de las pupilas.

4. Si los ojos del sujeto no están enfocados, es más difícil formar una conexión, así que es más difícil apreciar la imagen. De modo que, cuando haga fotografías de personas o animales,

siempre asegúrese de centrarse en los ojos para que salgan tan definidos como sea posible.

7. Aquí, el contraste entre el suelo y el cielo es demasiado grande para que la cámara lo pueda registrar. Si usted incluye mucho cielo en su imagen, la cámara ajustará la exposición para ello, haciendo el suelo demasiado oscuro.

Si saca mucho suelo, pasará al revés.

Si usted puede, trate de bloquear la exposición, lo que ayuda a equilibrar las cosas.

8. Su cámara asume que todo es un medio-tono gris, así que al fotografiar la nieve (por ejemplo), aumenta la exposición para aclarar la nieve y hacerla parecer blanca.

BOOK REVIEWS... OCIO favourites Don’t Blink by James Patterson About the book: New York’s Lombardo’s Steak House is famous for three reasons – the menu, the clientele, and now, the gruesome murder of an infamous mob lawyer.

Seated at a nearby table, reporter Nick Daniels is conducting a once-in-a-lifetime interview with a legendary baseball bad-boy. In the chaos, he accidentally captures a key piece of evidence that lands him in the middle of an all-out war between Italian and Russian mafia forces.

In Our Opinion: A fabulous story and very well written, confirming once again that James Patterson is the best in the business when it comes to suspense and intrigue. This is a real page turner and simply calls out to whenever you put it down for 5 minutes. The short chapters, large format text and general presentation makes this a very enjoyable read.

Rating: For crime and suspense it doesn’t get any better.

Sobre el libro: El restaurante Lombardo’s Steak House en Nueva York es famoso por tres motivos – el menú, la clientela, y ahora, el asesinato espantoso de un infame abogado de la mafia . Sentado en una mesa cercana, el reportero Nick Daniels esta llevando a cabo una entrevista que solo se presenta una vez en la vida, con un duro jugador de béisbol legendario. En el caos, accidentalmente captura una pieza clave de evidencia que le situa en el medio de una guerra incondicional entre la mafia italiana y rusa.

En Nuestra Opinión: Una historia fabulosa y muy bien escrita, afirmando nuevamente que James Patterson es el mejor en el negocio cuando se trata de incertidumbre e intriga. Esto es un verdadero pasa paginas que te llama de vuelta si lo dejas durante 5 minutos. Cortos capítulos , el texto de formato grande y la presentación en general lo convierte en una agradable lectura.

Valuación: Para delito e incertidumbre no se consigue mejor.

Fallen by Lauren Kate About the book: The first in a series of dark, romantic novels for teenagers and young adults about forbidden love and Fallen Angels. It is for fans of Stephenie Meyer and the second book in the series Torment is out in October.

In Our Opinion: The one thing reading Fallen has taught me, again, it’s that one should never judge a book by it’s cover, because it’s greatest power is always that it can surprise you. And that’s what Lauren Kate has done with her enthralling read. A teenage romance novel it may be but I was hooked right from the first page.

Rating: Absolutley loved it and I cannot wait to read the second book, Torment.

En Nuestra Opinión: Una cosa que he aprendido leyendo Oscuro, es que , no se puede juzgar un libro por su cubierta, porque su mayor poder es que siempre puede sorprenderte. Y esto es lo que Lauren Kate ha hecho con esta cautivadora lectura . Sera una novela romantica de adolescentes pero me engancho directamente desde la primera página.

Evaluación: Absolutamente adorable , no puedo esperar a leer el segundo libro, Tormento.

New tax rules for UK buyers

Spain property searches up 100%

Thousands of British second homeowners face tough new rules from the UK Treasury as the government cracks down on holiday lets. The plan is to abolish income tax breaks for those who occasionally rent out their properties. Any future tax breaks will be designed to help tourist businesses rather than wealthy owners who only let their properties from time to time. UK ministers appear to regard the current tax break system as expensive.

“Tax breaks for holiday homeowners date from the mid-1980s, when the tourist industry first persuaded the Treasury that the leisure industry needed encouragement. They have allowed those who let out furnished holiday homes to offset losses against their own personal taxes. But now the ground has shifted and European Union legislation means that the perk has to be extended to apply to second homes in Spain or anywhere in Europe and that could be an expensive change for the UK Treasury.

Spain continues to be one of the most popular expat destinations for British people, according to the most recent data. According to research from property website Primelocation, internet searches in Britain for property abroad are at a record high, up over 100 per cent from this time last year. Data from the company’s international search index shows that searches for Spanish property increased the most. In June this year there was a 151 per cent increase in searches compared to June 2009, and the country accounted for nearly a third of searches overall. Despite a potential rise in capital gains tax and a precarious economic situation in southern Europe, investors appear to be taking a long term view on the market, while hoping, in the short term, to take advantage of a weaker euro.

Ann Wright, International Development Manager of Primelocation International, said: “While the market in Spain has suffered from some bad publicity recently, there has been no significant drop in the number of people searching for property in the country on Primelocation International.

Miles de propietarios de segunda vivienda británicos se enfrentan a nuevas duras reglas del Tesoro del Reino Unido, ya que el gobierno esta tomando medidas contra el alquiler vacacional. El plan consiste en suprimir las desgravaciones fiscales a aquellos que ocasionalmente alquilan sus propiedades. Cualquier exención de impuestos futura estará diseñada para ayudar a empresas turísticas en lugar de los propietarios acaudalados, que sólo alquilan sus propiedades de vez en cuando. Ministros del Reino Unido parecen considerar que el sistema de desgravación fiscal actual resulta caro.

Los incentivos fiscales para los propietarios de viviendas vacacionales datan de los mediados de los 80, cuando la industria turística convenció a la Tesorería de que la industria del ocio necesitaba estímulo. Pero esto ahora ha cambiado y la legislación de la Unión Europea dice que esta ventaja debe extenderse y aplicarse a las segundas viviendas en España o en cualquier lugar de Europa y esto podría ser un cambio caro para el Tesoro del Reino Unido.

España sigue siendo uno de los destinos más populares para los emigrantes británicos, según los datos más recientes. Según los estudios del sitio web inmobiliario Primelocation, la búsqueda de propiedades en el extranjero en Internet en Gran Bretaña se encuentran a un nivel récord, más del 100 por ciento comparado con el año pasado.

Los datos del índice de la empresa de búsqueda internacional muestran que la búsqueda de propiedades en España es la que más ha aumentado. En junio de este año hubo un 151 por ciento de aumento en las búsquedas en comparación con junio de 2009, y España representó casi un tercio de las búsquedas. A pesar de un posible aumento en el impuesto sobre las ganancias y una precaria situación económica en el sur de Europa, los inversores parecen estar tomando una visión a largo plazo en el mercado, mientras que su esperanza, a corto plazo, es poder sacarle beneficio a la debilidad del euro.

From your perspective as a buyer, it is important for you to find a gallery where you feel comfortable so you can visit a number of times to be sure of what you like.

Whether you are looking to spend a small fortune or just a few euros, one good tip is to always buy the best you can afford.

If you feel brave enough and are sure of your own taste, then in addition to the galleries there are numerous art fairs both here and throughout Europe for you to seek out your potentital investment.

Los desfiles de modas de otoño/invierno 2010 en Europa estuvieron llenos de estilo y encanto. De todas las clases, de impetuosos bolsos enormes con capacidad de meter una camada de cachorros,a los de diseño donde apenas caben un iphone y un lápiz de labios. En cuanto a colores, aparte de los terrosos caqui y camello, los bolsos eran sobre todo brillantes y coloridos con tachuelas, cuentas, borlas y logotipos, haciendo resaltar hebillas de todas formas y tamaños.

El estilo nuevo de bolso grande,para los fines de semana, jugó un gran papel en los desfiles y aunque pueda ser llamado un bolso de fin de semana, desafiamos a cualquiera a no usarlo durante la semana también. or once, black is not the new black this winter. Instead, the fashion pack have been going crazy for all things camel coloured. Great news for those of us who find the onset of dark nights and dreary weather depressing enough, without being swamped in dingy hues all season. Warm and comforting tones of toffee, caramel and cappuccino brown are the way to winter-proof your wardrobe for 2010. There’s a real 1970s influence behind camel’s return as the coolest colour of the season. Flare cut trousers capture the mood nicely, teamed with a tight fitted animal print top will see you right on trend.

But, the key piece in your new camel wardrobe has to be the coat. A cashmere trench coat with a fur style collar will create a more figure flattering alternative to some of the boxy mid-length numbers that are out there. As does a cute military-style frock coat. Alternatively, cut a dash as the cape makes a return to form with it’s easy to wear style.

he September Fashion Show at the Tuesday Trapiche Market was a great success. The models paraded and showed off some lovely fashion items to the audience. A selection of lovely late Summer lines were modelled along with an introduction to the new Autumn collections for us to think about introducing into our wardrobes as we slowly creep into the colder months ahead.

The Trapiche Market has a large free car park with room for hundreds of cars and entrance to the market is free. Once inside there is a real variety of stalls to browse around and when the walking, talking and shopping gets too much, there are shaded areas with facilities for tea and coffee from the bar area along with wines, beers and hot food snacks.

The large interior section is fully air conditioned. If you have not yet visited the Trapiche Market, I would encourage you to do so, it really is a lovely way to spend a couple of hours on a Tuesday morning. See you there!

For a night out, Malaga has so much to offer to everyone, the young and the young at heart. In part two of our feature we look at the very best places to drink and dance the night away in and around Malaga.

S

tart off an entertaining night by having your first drink in the Calle de Bruselas on Plaza de la Merced, a friendly and lively bar offering a welcoming ambience along with special music and fun nights. From here the centre of Malaga is at your dancing feet. Head for the craziest spot in the city, Varsovia, where you will dance to the rhythm of kitsch music like that of Camilo Sesto, Alaska and Rafaela Carrá. For salsa lovers Habana Café offers entertainment as well as dance classes. Don’t think twice about taking to the dance floor. During the week at Basurte they teach salsa classes and they also serve wonderful cocktails. The clientele are mainly thirty somethings who enjoy a good time.

Some fun places to go are Boom Bear, Bocacho (they’ve been around more than 15 years) and Saloma (for those with more refined tastes). If you like somewhere quieter, try Vip’s, Copas or Donde. The

latter is in the Pedregalejo district and has a fantastic open-air terrace. If you prefer your music a little more funkier, your night-spot is Dr. Funk, with its young and cosmopolitan ambience. Liceo, for real night owls, and Medievo are perfect spots for the more traditional.

However, if you prefer sitting down to have a drink, and listening to great music, try Cantor de Jazz, probably one of the best music spots the city has to offer in terms of atmosphere, music and service.

For the best in ambience and music, try the Boulevard.

And if you feel like a Cuban atmosphere, you can find it in Bodeguita del Medio, where they serve first-class mojitos with Cuban rum and real cane sugar.

So that’s our round up of fun, stylish and entertaining places to visit in and around Malaga. Of course this is only a very small selection from a very large city, so go explore and have fun...Vive la noche! n

ara empezar la noche toma una primera copa en Calle Bruselas en la Plaza de la Merced, es un bar muy animado con un ambiente acogedor con música y noches divertidas.

Desde aquí el centro de Málaga está a un paso.

Dirígete a uno de los sitios más alocados de la ciudad, El Varsovia, donde podrás escuchar la música de Camilo Sexto, Alaska y Rafaela Carrá.

Para los amantes de la salsa, el Habana Café ofrece entretenimiento al igual que clases. No te lo pienses dos veces para lanzarte a la pista de baile. De lunes a viernes, en el Basurte hay clases de salsa al igual que sus magníficos cócteles. La clientela ronda los treinta y tantos. Otros lugares divertidos donde ir son el Boom Bear, Bocacho (llevan más de 15 años) y Saloma (para los de gusto más refinado). Si buscas algo más tranquilo,

búscalo en Vip’s, Copas o Dónde. Éste último está en la zona de Pedregalejo y tiene una fantástica terraza.

Si prefieres una música más funky, tu sitio es el Dr. Funk, con su ambiente cosmopolita. Para los más tradicionales El Liceo y el Medievo son perfectos. Si por el contrario prefieren estar sentados tomando una copa y escuchar buena música, pruebe El Cantor de Jazz, uno de los mejores que la ciudad ofrece en cuanto a música, atmósfera y servicio.

Si lo que te gusta es una atmósfera urbana la encontrarás en la Bodeguita del Medio donde sirven mojitos de primera clase con ron cubano y azúcar de caña. Receta

For the Seabass - prep and portion it so that a half of the flesh has been removed leaving the skin intact. Gently cut along the skin so that you can pull the flesh away but still attached. Spread the Tapenade on this half of the skin, fold back the flesh and fold back the other half of the skin, so that you make a little parcel. Tie with string . set aside.

Lubina - Limpiar y trocear quitando la mitad de la carne pero dejando la piel intacta. Hacer un corte suave a lo largo de la piel para poder sacar la carne pero sin separarla del todo. Untar con tapenade esa mitad de la piel, volver a meter la carne y doblar la otra mitad de la piel, como para formar un pequeño paquete. Atar con hilo de cocina. Reservar.

For the ravioli - mix the spinach with a reduction of cream, nutmeg, and seasoning. Cool down and make a ravioli with pork paste.

Raviolis - Preparar una salsa de nata, nuez moscada molida, sal y pimienta. Echar las espinacas y mezclar.

Dejar enfriar. Preparar raviolis con paté de cerdo.

Tomates - Quitar la piel y las semillas, colocarlos en una bandeja, poner un poco de sal gema, tomillo y ajo picado y asar en el horno durante 2 horas y 1/2 a 60C. Darles la vuelta a la mitad del tiempo.

Tapenade - Mezclar 200 gramos de aceitunas negras, 3 anchoas, 1 diente de ajo, 1 cucharada de alcaparras y 5 de aceite de oliva.

For the tomato - take the skin off and seeds out, place on a tray on pastry paper, put some rock salt, chopped thyme and chopped garlic on top and dry out in oven for about 2 1/2 hours at 60˚C turn tomatoes over half way.

For the Tapenade - mix together 200gms black olives, 3 anchovies, 1 clove of garlic, 1 tblspn of capers and 5 tblspns of olive oil.

For the sauce – 1 small ladle of balsamic, 2 small ladles of cabernet sauvignon vinegar, 1 1/2 ladles of sherry vinegar mix together and reduce one third. Reserve.

Mix 400ml of crab stock with 600ml guinea fowl stock, add a little parsley, carrots, fennel, thyme, 3 black peppercorns, reduce by half until nice consistency.

Mix the vinegar sauce to the crab stock sauce and add 180gms of butter made into beurre noisette, On a serving plate put the ravioli in the centre, the sauce around the edges of the plate, sprinkle some chopped chives on the sauce. Sit the Seabass on top of the ravioli, a quenelle of diced candied tomato on top , a baton of deep fried celeriac, and a deep fried basil leaf.

Salsa - 1 cucharada de vinagre balsámico, 2 de vinagre de cabernet sauvignon, 1 y 1/2 de vinagre de Jerez.

Mezclar, calentar y reducir a una tercera parte. Reservar.

Mezclar 400ml de caldo de cangrejo con 600 ml de caldo de ave. Agregar un poco de perejil, zanahorias, hinojo, tomillo, 3 granos de pimienta negra. Calentar y dejar reducir a la mitad y hasta obtener la consistencia idónea. Mezclar la salsa de vinagre con el caldo y añadir 180 gramos de mantequilla en trozos pequeños.

En el plato en el que se va servir, colocar los raviolis en el centro y la salsa alrededor siguiendo los bordes del plato.

Echar por encima cebolleta picada.

Panic sets in as a worldwide garlic shortage takes hold It turns out that Chinese consumers believe that garlic will ward off the swine flu, so they’ve been stockpiling it. Now when the Chinese stockpile something, they can make a difference in the world economy. The result is skyrocketing international demand for garlic. This year China, which supplies about 70 percent of the world’s garlic, exported only about half of its usual 200 million pounds causing the price to triple at very best.

Stephen Hendray a London based food buyer for a leading international hotel chain said “ I had developed contingency plans for just about every conceivable catastrophe: a major, transport paralysing winter; a double-dip recession; A worldwide form of dementia where Lady Gaga starts to make sense...but a garlic shortage? I’m just going to throw in the towel!

Chef, Martin Blunos, creates world’s most expensive sandwich The world’s most expensive cheese sandwich has been unveiled at a whopping price of £112. Celebrity chef Martin Blunos, 50, created it by using ordinary cheddar blended with expensive white truffles and then topped with gold dust. He also included a 100-year-old balsamic vinegar, bread costing £5, slices of quail’s egg, black tomatoes, epicure apple and fresh figs.

Topping it off is a salad layer of dainty mustard red frills, pea shoots and red amaranth.

The gourmet dish is the main attraction at the Frome Cheese Show in Somerset (UK) where the Food Poker star is judging a sandwichmaking competition.

“We Brits are known to love our cheese sandwiches, and here’s one that not only comes with a royal price tag but is fit for the banqueting table. The white truffle fuses beautifully with the West Country Farmhouse Cheddar and the edible gold leaf gives it a really special look. In fact, washed down with a bottle of Krug Champagne, what more could you want?”
