T

he continuing growth of the strawberry sector in Huelva, Spain continues to symbolise one of the greatest successes in international agriculture in recent years. In addition to the huge economic importance of the sector, the province has singlehandedly made Spain the leader in strawberry production in Europe. With more than 95% of Spanish strawberry production coming from Huelva, this achievement would have been impossible without the dedication of the growers and organisations in Huelva.

How has this small Spanish province managed to give strawberry producers worldwide a run for their money? Without any European Union subsidies, Huelva’s farmers would proudly boast. Yet, despite the lack of EU help, Huelva is the only zone in Spain that has been declared it’s own economic zone. This has allowed them to create a series of agrarian and commercial laws (approved by the European Commission) that all growers must comply.

If you are reading this article as you eat your morning breakfast of fruit and yoghurt, the chances are the strawberries in your bowl are home grown right here in Spain. Andie Anderson tells us more.

The result has been the creation of a sector with strong economic and technological backing, in constant search of innovations and improvements.

With over 1000 strawberry varieties worldwide, nearly ninety-eight percent of the strawberries produced in Huelva come from the Camarosa variety (The Tudla, Big Bear, Cartuno, and Carisma varieties make up the remaining two percent). Farmers claim that Camarosa’s dominance is due to the idylic adaption of the Californian variety to the excellent soil and climatic conditions in Huelva. Camarosa strawberries are characteristically large, bright red in colour, have a good sheen to them, and are known for their early collection. The berry holds well, so it preserves its full red colour despite its long shelf life.

on el continuo crecimiento del sector de la fresa en Huelva, España continúa siendo símbolo de uno de los mayores éxitos en la agricultura internacional de los

últimos años. Además de la enorme importancia económica del sector, la provincia ha convertido a España en líder de la producción de fresa en Europa.

Con más del 95% de la producción de fresas españolas procedentes de Huelva, este logro no hubiera sido posible sin la dedicación de los productores y las organizaciones onubenses. ¿Cómo ha hecho esta pequeña provincia española hacer que los productores de fresa en todo el mundo suden la tinta? Sin ninguna subvención de la Unión Europea, los productores onubenses presumen orgullosos. Sin embargo, a pesar de la falta de ayuda, Huelva es la única zona de España que ha sido declarada zona económica independiente. Esto les ha permitido crear una serie de leyes agrarias y comerciales (probadas por la Comisión Europea) que deben cumplir todos los productores. El resultado ha sido la creación de un sector con un fuerte respaldo económico y tecnológico, en

constante búsqueda de innovaciones y mejoras.

Con más de 1000 variedades de fresas en todo el mundo, casi el 90 % de las fresas producidas en Huelva provienen de una variedad denominada Camarosa (La Tudla, Oso Grande, Cartuno y Carisma, completan el 2% restante). Los agricultores afirman que el dominio de Camarosa se debe a que son característicamente grandes, de color rojo brillante, y son conocidas por su temprana recolecta. An old school Central Intelligence Agency operative, Paul Deveraux, who was retired from the agency because of his violent yet effective methods is summoned to accomplish the task. From the formulation of the basic desire of the president and with an executive order in hand Mr. Deveraux begins his prep work of building the organisation he will need to combat the world cocaine trade and try to stop it.

In Our Opinion: A rich yet violent work of fiction that is filled with accurate facts on existing governmental agencies and their capabilities.

Un agente a la antigua usanza de la C.I.A, Paul Devereux, el cual fue retirado por la agencia a causa de sus métodos violentos pero efectivos, es convocado para cumplir la tarea. Según los deseos básicos formulados por el presidente y con la orden ejecutiva en mano Mr.Devereux empieza a construir la organización que necesitara para combatir el mundo de la cocaína y pararlo.

En nuestra opinión: Un rico y sin embargo violento trabajo de ficción lleno de hechos acertados en agencias gubernamentales reales y sus capacidades.

oday I am feeling really chuffed. Yesterday was the big day to see how I had done for this month and I am proud to say that I have done even better than the first month! Here’s how I got on for month two under the expert guidance of Caleta based Personal Fitness Trainer Viveqa Norbay: weight – a loss of 2.9 kilos (making a total loss of 5.3 kilos), Bodyfat – a loss of 2.5% (making a total loss of 4.7%) and measurements – a loss of 15.5cm (making a total loss of 30.5cm).

When I first started training with Viveqa I was unhappy with my shape in general and thought my expanding waistline was just what happens when you are in your forties, middle age spread! How wrong I was, with Viveqa’s bikini plan I am really starting to notice my shape changing, becoming more defined. I can feel my clothes getting looser every day and I really do feel truly fantastic, full of energy and life.

Viveqa reminded me yesterday that when I started with her 2 months ago, I could only manage 2 full press ups, now I can do 20 with relative ease.

Each week I have been going to 3 excercise classes, sometimes a jog along the seafront, as well as my personal training session with Viveqa. It is amazing what a difference it makes when you have somebody ensuring that you are achieving the correct technique 100% of the time whilst making sure you are giving it 100% effort.

Aunque el color sea tan popular, no es un color muy fácil de llevar, porque en ella cuando se ensucia se nota al instante. Dependiendo de la ocasión en vez de llevar prendas blancas con solo llevando accesorios blancos es suficiente. You don’t have to believe me when I say that residential property is a secure investment. Just ask the banks. Banks have always recognised property, and especially residential real estate, as an excellent security. The reason they’ll lend you up to 80% of the value of your property is that they know property values have never fallen over the long-term. In fact, the entire banking system in many parts of the world is underpinned by the continual growth of residential property.

But the really special feature of the residential property market is that owner-occupiers, that is people owning or paying off their homes, own about 70% of these properties.

This means the majority of the market in which we invest does not act according to normal investment criteria or motivation. If times get tough the majority of homeowners don’t panic and rush to sell, as can (and did) happen in other sectors such as the sharemarket. So while property prices do fluctuate over time, affected by supply and demand, the large homeowner market will always underpin property values.

Si eligen bien su eleccion de propiedades sus devoluciones serán mejor dependiendo de ello.

Over the years the rental income received from property investments has increased at a rate that has outpaced inflation.

5. Consistent capital growth. Good residential property has an unequalled track record of producing high and consistent capital growth. For example, over the past 25 years the value of the average property in all capital cities around the world has doubled in value every eight to 10 years. However, in the short-term the picture is much more uncertain and confused, and at times capital growth stops and even reverses, as we saw in the early 80s, the early 90s and in some areas in the most recent slump we experienced in 2008.

While all our capital cities have averaged growth of around 8-10%, compounding each year over the last 25 years, these are just averages. The better your property selection – where you buy, what you buy, how well you negotiate and how you finance your property investment – the better your returns could be.

rigiliana is not short of an accolade or two and has been voted the ‘prettiest village in Andalucía’ by the Spanish tourism authority. This delightful white washed village is also rich in history. During the 16th Century there were many battles between the Moors and Christians in Andalucia, which culminated with the final expulsion of the Arabs with the battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569.

This historical rebellion between the local Moriscos in the village and surrounding area, and a Christian army led from Nerja was a particularly violent battle that is still remembered today. This fascinating story

ithout question, the mojito is my favourite cocktail.

The clasic blend of rum, mint, lime, and sugar combine to make not only an incredibly delicious and thirst-quenching drink but gives me a degree of coolness with a summertime laid back feeling that I don’t usually posess in all honesty.

But has it always been so cool and trendy you ask. Well no, in fact, according to the legend told by the late Angel Martinez, the origins of the mojito derive from a drink made of sugar cane-sweetened water spiked with unrefined rum that was consumed by slaves in Cuba in the late 19th century.

International acclaim for the cocktail emerged after 1946, the year that Mr. Martinez opened La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana and started to serve mojitos endorsed by Ernest Hemingway, attracting the likes of Brigitte Bardot, Pablo Neruda, Nat King Cole, and Errol Flynn, among others. Today, La Bodeguita is a major tourist destination that has even spawned a copycat in Palo Alto, California.

For me, I like to make a mojito by muddling a substantial amount of mint leaves (5 to 10, depending on their size, though I don’t think I’ve ever used too much mint) with two teaspoons of sugar (a mortar and pestle will work for this step). The important thing is to

grind the sugar into the leaves so that the granules are completely incorporated and dissolved within the mint and its juice. This will form a sort of paste of mint and sugar.

Combine with the juice of one lime and the leftover lime, cut into quarters. Add two ounces of white rum, club soda, crushed ice and shake in a cocktail shaker. Garnish with a sprig of lime and retire to the side of the pool or beach sunlounger to enjoy. n

En el siglo XX, cuenta la historia, el Mojito se convirtió en una bebida popular en la Playa de Marianao; una playa de clases trabajadoras en un barrio de La Habana.

El reconocimiento internacional del cóctel surgió después de 1946, el año que el señor Martínez abrió La Bodeguita del Medio en La Habana, y comenzó a

servir Mojitos promocionados por Ernest Hemingway, que atrajo personajes de la talla de Brigitte Bardot, Pablo Neruda, Nat King Cole y Errol Flynn, entre otros.

Hoy en día, La Bodeguita es mayoritariamente un reclamo turístico que incluso ha dado lugar a un imitador en Palo Alto, California.

A mí me gusta elaborar el Mojito con una cantidad considerable de hojas de hierbabuena (de 5 a 10 unidades dependiendo de su tamaño, aunque creo que nunca he utilizado demasiadas hojas), con dos cucharaditas de azúcar (y un mortero para este paso). Lo más importante es moler el azúcar con las hojas, para que los granos de azúcar se disuelvan completamente con la

hierbabuena y su jugo. Esto se convertirá en una especie de pasta de hierbabuena y azúcar. Combinar con el zumo de una lima y los restos de la lima, cortarlos en cuartos. Agregar dos onzas de ron blanco, soda, hielo picado y agitar en la coctelera. Adórnelo con una rodajita de lima y retírese junto a la piscina o la playa a disfrutar. n

Aber war es immer so kühl und ‚trendy’, fragen Sie? Tatsächlich nicht, wenn man der Legende des alten Angel Martinez glaubt, der Mojito sei ursprünglich ein mit Rohrzucker gesüßter, unreiner Rum für die Sklaven in Cuba im späten 19. Jahrhundert gewesen.

Ich selbst mache Mojito, indem ich Minzeblätter vermische (5 oder 10, je nach Größe, obwohl ich nicht glaube jemals zu viele genommen zu haben) mit zwei Teelöffeln Zucker (Mörser und Stößel sind dafür sehr praktisch). Das Wichtige ist, den Zucker in die Blätter zu reiben, so dass die Körner vollständig von der Minze und ihrem Saft aufgenommen und aufgelöst werden. Das ergibt eine Minzezuckerpaste.

Der füge ich den Saft einer Limone hinzu und eine weitere Limone teile ich in Viertel.

Dazu gebe ich knapp 10 ml weißen Rum, Soda und Eissplitter hinzu und mixe alles in einem Cocktailbecher. Ich garniere es mit einem Limonenzweig, ziehe mich an den Pool oder in einen Strandkorb zurück und genieße den Mojito. n 58 OCIO magazine

La cocina fácil de José Marfil

Corazones de Vieiras al pil-pil con patatas pobre y verde cibullet Puedes encontrarlo en: Bluerose Restaurant, Algarrobo Costa.

Ingredients (4 pers)

Ingredientes (4 pers)

Potatoes: 800g potatoes, 100g of onion, 50g green pepper, 50g of red pepper, cumin, oregano, salt and pepper, 100g of olive oil and 50cl of white wine.

Scallops: 800g of scallops hearts, 30cl of white wine EL LAGAR, two cloves of garlic, four whole peppers, 50cl of olive oil, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt and pepper.

Decoration and aroma: chives, parsley, borage flowers, tagete flowers.

Patatas a lo pobre: 800g de patatas, 100g de cebolla, 50g de pimiento verde, 50g de pimiento rojo, comino molido, orégano, sal y pimienta, 100g aceite de oliva y 50cl vino blanco.

Vieira: 800g de corazones de vieira,30cl vino EL LAGAR blanco, dos dientes de ajo, cuatro guindillas enteras, 50cl de aceite de olivas, pimentón dulce, pimentón picante, sal y pimienta.

Decoración y aroma: tallo de cebollino, perejil, flor de borraja, flor de tagete.

Preparation:

Con el horno precalentado a 180o extender las verduras cortadas en una bandeja honda, aliñar con las especies y regarlo con aceite de oliva. Tapar la bandeja con papel de aluminio y introducir al horno (50-60 min). A mitad de cocción añadir el vino y si deseamos dorar la patatas retirar la tapa 20 minutos antes .

Para los corazones de vieira, calentar el aceite con la guindilla en una sartén, marcar el pescado, añadir los ajos, dorar, incorporar el vino, el pimentón y dejar reducir la salsa Pil-Pil .

With the oven preheated to 180o extend the cut vegetables in a deep tray, season them with spices and water with olive oil. Cover the tray with tinfoil and put it in the oven (50-60 min).

Halfway through cooking add wine, and if you want to brown the potatoes, remove the lid 20 minutes before.

For the scallop hearts, heat the oil with the chili in a pan, mark the fish, add the garlic, brown, add the wine, the paprika and let sauce Pilpil reduce itself.

Chef’s Advice: Try to prepare the recipe with other kinds of fish or seafood (shrimps, rock salmon, squid, etc...), the result will be excellent.

Left over potatoes can be used to make a delicious Spanish omelette with a lot of character.
