eishmania is a parasitic disease that affects the animal’s system and vital organs. The infectious agents are protozoan parasites that belong to the genus Leishmania that are transmitted by the bite of certain species of sand fly.

Does it only exist in Spain?

Traditionally thought of as a disease only found near the Mediterrean basin, 2008 research claims new findings are evidence that canine leishmaniasis is currently expanding in continental climate areas of northwestern Italy, far from the recognised disease-endemic areas along the Mediterranean coasts. Also tourists having their summer holidays in the Mediterranean and don’t protect their dogs are spreading the disease to their northern countries, that’s also why prevention is being so important.

Is leishmaniosis dangerous for my family?

The disease primarily affects dogs; however on very rare occasions, it can also affect humans. But dogs cannot infect other dogs or humans directly, the parasite needs to go into a mosquito first and then this mosquito will be able to infect another dog or human.

What symptoms could I see in an ill dog?

There is not one sign that would tell you. An experienced vet could suspect of the illness by seeing a dog, but the disease has to be diagnosed with a blood test. Symptoms are variable but include: skin lesions, alopecia, ulcerative or exfoliative dermatitis, swollen lymphnodes, ocular signs, progressive loss of weight with decreased appetite, epistaxis (nose bleeds), kidney failure.

Is there a treatment?

Yes, but it has to be started as soon as possible and the success depends on the stage of the disease. You must know it’s a chronic disease and your pet will have to have periodic revisions (each year minimum) to evaluate the health status. The life of the dog in many cases can be completely normal.

Prevention If you are very careful and follow easy instructions you can prevent leishmania infections. First use products against the sand fly on your pet, collars or spot-ons, but specific ones, not all protect only a few. Your vet will advise you, it is better to use them the whole year, but of course warm weather is the most dangerous time of year because these kind of mosquitos (the sand flies) are out.

Keep your pets indoors at dawn and dusk in the risk seasons (March to November) it’s when the mosquitoes go out. Use plug-ins at home to repel the entrance of the insects. n 44 OCIO OCIOmagazine magazine

What is Leishmania?

L

a Leishmania es una enfermedad parasitaria que afecta al sistema y órganos vitales del animal. Estos agentes infecciosos son parásitos protozoarios que pertenecen al género leishmania que se transmiten através de la picadura de cierto tipo de mosca de arena. ¿Existe solamente en España?

Tradicionalmente se ha pensado que esta enfermedad solo se encuentra cerca del Mediterráneo, pero una investigación durante el 2008 expone nuevas averiguaciones y evidencia que la leishmaniosis canina se expande en áreas climáticas continentales del Noroeste de Itália, lejos de las áreas donde se reconoce esta enfermedad, las costas Mediterráneas. Además, turistas que pasan sus vacaciones de verano en el Mediterráneo sin protejer a sus perros están creando una propagación de dicha enfermedad a sus países del norte, esto es por lo que la prevención es tán importante. ¿La Leishmaniosis es peligrosa para mi familia?

La enfermedad afecta prioritariamente a perros, aunque en ocasiones raras también puede afectar a los humanos, pero los perros no infectan a otros perros ní a los humanos de forma directa, sino que el parásito necesita convertirse en mosquito previamente y entonces ese mosquito podrá infectar a otros perros o incluso humanos. ¿Que síntomas veré en un perro enfermo?

No hay un síntoma claro para detectarlo.

Un veterinario profesional podrá sospechar de la enfermedad viendo al

perro, pero se tendrá que diagnosticar através de un análisis de sangre. Los síntomas son variables, aunque incluyen lesiones en la piel, alopecia, dermatitis ulcerosa o exfoliativa, ganglios linfáticos hinchados, melanomas oculares, pérdida progresiva de peso y disminuición del apetito, epístaxis (hemorrágias nasales) e insuficiencia renal. ¿Hay Tratamiento?

Sí, pero hay que empezar el tratamiento lo antes posible y el éxito dependerá de lo avanzada que este la enfermedad.

Deberá saber que es una enfermedad crónica y su mascota necesitará revisiones periódicas (anualmente como mínimo) para evaluar su estado de salud.

En muchos casos, la vida del perro puede llegar a ser completamente normal.

Prevención.

Si tiene ud. mucho cuidado, y sigue nuestras sencillas instrucciones podrá prevenir las infecciones de la Leishmania. Primeramente, deberá utilizar productos contra la mosca de arena en su mascota, tales como collares o ampollas antiparásitarias, pero deben ser específicos, no todos lo protegerán, solo unos pocos. Su veterinario le aconsejará que es mejor utilizarlos durante todo el año, aunque por supuesto cuando hay mas riesgo es en épocas cálidas ya que es durante este tiempo cuando este tipo de mosquito (la mosca de arena) abunda.

Mantenga a su mascota dentro de casa durante el amanecer y el atardecer (desde Marzo hasta Noviembre) ya que es cuando los mosquitos salen. Utiliza repelentes de conexión a la red eléctrica en casa para evitar la entrada de los insectos. n

Road to recovery

T

he market for new homes is on the road to a mild recovery, claims the G-14 group of Spain’s leading developers. Sales of newly built homes will continue “consolidating in the coming months” said Pedro Pérez, head of the G-14. There is some basis for the developer’s optimism in the latest sales figures from the National Institute of Statistics. Sales of newly built properties increased by 7.6% from August to September.

“It’s been comforting to see sales rise for the 5th consecutive month, something that means we can say that the sector is recovering since it touched bottom in April,” Pérez told the Spanish press.

Sales are bouncing back thanks to lower prices and more selective mortgage lending by banks, argue the developers.

The recovery in sales will continue in the months ahead, says Pérez, in part because developers will make “every effort possible” to make prices more attractive.

En Camino a la Recuperación

l mercado de viviendas nuevas ya se está recuperando poco a poco, según el grupo G-14 de los principales promotores de España.

Las ventas de las casas de nueva construcción continuarán a “consolidarse durante los próximos meses” afirmó Pedro Pérez, director del G14. Si miramos las últimas cifras de venta del Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas entendemos el optimismo del promotor. Las ventas de viviendas de nuevas construcción aumentaron por un 7.6% entre agosto y septiembre de este año.

Nos ha tranquilizado ver un aumento en las ventas ya por 5 meses consecutivos, lo cual nos permite decir que el sector se ha estado recuperando desde abril, el mes en el que tocó fondo” le confirmó Pérez a la prensa española. Según los promotores, las ventas se están recuperando gracias a precios más bajos y unos prestamos más selectivos de los bancos. Esta recuperación de las ventas continuará durante los próximos meses, afirma Pérez, en parte porque los promotores harán “todo lo posible” para hacer que los precios sean más atractivos.

commercial real estate because there isn’t much product and rents haven’t yet adjusted. In residential, on the other hand, the correction has been very strong and fast. So yes, there is plenty of opportunity today.

Has the price of housing and land touched bottom?

House prices touched bottom some time ago, they have already fallen all they had to fall. And the price of land has fallen faster than house prices although it could even fall a bit more. The Spanish government statistics suggest that prices in Spain have only fallen by 8% but in the real world you can see that 30% in the last 2 years would be a figure closer to the truth.

What’s wrong with the official statistics?

They are based on valuations. One has to look at real property transactions to see not only the asking prices but how far the sellers were prepared to drop their prices to sell.

Do you think there is any residential property that will never sell?

What there is is a stock of land that will never be sold, at least not in 10 years. There are areas of Spain where the town plans look like they were designed by aliens, parts of u20

A. No hay muchas oportunidades en el inmobiliario comercial porque no hay muchas viviendas en venta y los alquileres todavía no se han ajustado a la situación económica actual. Sin embargo, en cuanto a lo residencial, se han ajustado los precios muy rápido entonces sí existen oportunidades ahora mismo.

Q. ¿Piensa que los precios de las viviendas y los terrenos han tocado fondo?

A. Los precios de las vivienda tocaron fondo hace tiempo entonces ya han llegado al mínimo. El precio de terreno ha bajado aún más que las viviendas y podría bajar algo más todavía. Las estadísticas del gobierno español sugieren que los precios en España sólo han bajado un 8%, sin embargo la realidad es que una cifra de 30%, en los últimos dos años, estaría más cerca a la verdad.

Q. ¿Cuál es el problema con las estadísticas oficiales?

A. Se basan en las tasaciones cuando hay que estudiar las transacciones reales en el sector para poder ver no sólo el precio inicial que pedía el vendedor sino también hasta que punto estaban dispuestos a bajar ese precio inicial para conseguir una venta.

Q. ¿Piensa que existen algunas viviendas residenciales que jamás se venderán? u20

A. Lo que sí hay es una cantidad de terreno que nunca se venderá, por lo menos no durante los próximos 10 años.

En algunas partes de España parece que unos alienígenos diseñaron los planos urbanísticos: algunas zonas de Almería, Murcia y Alicante son las peores y, como tal, las que son las más criticadas en la prensa. Hay una sobredosis de terreno que se quedará en los depósitos de los bancos durante muchos años.

Q. ¿Hay una demanda verdadera para viviendas en este momento?

A. Sí, se están vendiendo muchas viviendas por toda España. Los estudios que he llevado a cabo apuntan a que se vendieron más de 200,000 viviendas en el año 2009.

Como regla general las viviendas no serán más baratas que ahora y cuando los precios empiecen a subir, lo harán a un ritmo de un 10% al año, por lo tanto yo espero ver un incremento en la demanda de viviendas durante el 2010.

Almeria, Murcia and Alicante for example are the worst, and the most reported on in the bad press. There is an overdose of land that will lie in the warehouses of banks for many years.

Is there any real demand for housing at the moment?

Yes, a lot of homes are being sold all over Spain. My research would suggest that more than 200,000 homes were sold in 2009.

Generally speaking, houses won’t be any cheaper than they are now and when prices start to rise they will do so at a rate of 10% per year, so I expect demand to increase in 2010.

How will the Spanish property sector recover from recent times?

I would suggest that the recovery has already begun. Colleagues and associates I have in the banking industry in Spain tell me that mortgage requests are on the increase. There is mortgage financing available, not much still, but there is some available and the funds that are available are increasing. Mortgage costs are low, and it appears that the future is not going to get any worse than it has been in recent times. If you are going to take advantage of low property prices, now is the time to do it .

Do you have any advice that I can pass onto our magazine readers?

I could leave you with a story for your readers. In my younger years when I was hustling for a few pounds here and there I worked on a busy Sunday market in London. Each week there was a certain chap who arrived to sell his wares. I would watch him and learn from his techniques. He used to win the attention of the passing customers with a bit of cheeky banter and if he never made a sale he would say, “too late, too late will be the cry, when the man with the bargains passes you by”.

Q. ¿Cómo se recuperará el sector inmobiliario español de los tiempos actuales?

A. Yo apuntaría a que ya ha empezado esa recuperación. Mis compañeros en el sector bancario me dicen que las solicitudes para una hipoteca ya están aumentando. Existe financiación de capital para las hipotecas, no mucha, pero hay algo y el dinero disponible también va en aumento. Los costes de hipoteca son bajos y parece que las cosas no se van a empeoran en el futuro.

Si quisieras aprovechar de los precios bajos ahora sería el momento ideal.

Q. ¿Tiene algunos trucos o sugerencias que le puedo dar a nuestros lectores?

A. Puedo dejarte con una historia para vuestros lectores. Cuando era más joven y me movía por todas partes intentando ganarme algo de dinero, trabajaba los domingos en un mercado concurrido de Londres. Cada semana había un hombre que llegaba a vender su mercancía. Yo lo miraba y aprendía de su técnica. El llamaba la atención de los clientes con unas bromas picaras y si no llegaba a venderles nada decía “tarde, tarde dirá el público cuando el hombre de las gangas te pasa de largo”.

Mi consejo es: ¡actúa ahora y no dejes que las gangas se te escapen! n

Catalan merger

T

he tie-up of the two Catalan institutions, Caixa Penedes and Caixa Laietana, has created the country’s ninth-largest savings banks by assets. Plus, Unicaja and Cajasur of Andalusia are the latest two banks to merge following the nation’s worst recession. The tie-up of the two Catalan institutions will create a savings bank with over EUR 32 billion in assets, over 900 offices and a staff of around 4,000.

The Bank of Spain governor Miguel Fernandez Ordonez said he would like to see a third of the country’s 45 savings banks quickly absorbed by stronger institutions.

“I think there are at least 15 institutions that should merge with others. I hope by next spring we have restructured all these institutions, that’s my idea. We now have many, many mergers that we are discussing,” he told the Spanish press.

44 days is the average time it takes to sell a property in Spain, according to new research by Idealista, a Spanish property portal. Unless vendors get real and drop their prices the time on the market “is likely to carry on getting longer,” warns the report from Idealista.

The situation isn’t quite so bad in Barcelona and Madrid, Spain’s biggest and most liquid property markets. It now takes 304 days to find a buyer in Barcelona, and 320 days in Madrid, but “just a year ago it took 217 and 242 days respectively,” point out Idealista. So in the course of a year the time it takes to sell a home in Barcelona has increased by 87 days, and by 78 days in Madrid. Compared to 5 years ago, the time it takes to sell property in Spain has increased dramatically. In 2004 it took just 76 days in Barcelona and 86 days in Madrid.

Fusión Catalana

a fusión de dos instituciones catalanas, Caixa Penedes y Caixa Laietana, ha creado la novena caja de ahorro más grande en cuanto a las acciones.

Además, Unicaja y Cajasur de Andalucía son las dos últimas cajas de ahorro en fusionarse después de la peor recesión jamás vista en España. La fusión de las 2 instituciones catalanas formará una caja de ahorro con más de 32 mil millones de euros en acciones, más de 900 oficinas y unos 4000 empleados.

El director del Banco de España, Miguel Fernández Ordoñez, dijo que le gustaría ver una tercera parte de las 45 cajas de ahorro absorbidas por entidades más fuertes.

“Creo que hay por lo menos 15 instituciones que deberían fusionarse con otras. Espero que, antes de la próxima primavera, hayamos podido reestructurar todas estas entidades; eso es mi idea. Ahora mismo estamos debatiendo muchísimas fusiones,” afirmó a la prensa española.

Are your concerns primarily aesthetic or functional? Or are both important to you?

Do you have children and/or pets who use the area for eating, playing or sleeping?

Does the kitchen have to provide family

living space or is it only a cooking and clearing up centre? Also consider your appliances and accessories. What is on your must have list and what is on your like to have list? Today’s equipment goes way beyond ovens, hobs, fridges, dishwashers and freezers; you are now tempted with built-in coffee systems, wine coolers, ice box dispensers and even e-mail and hi-fi centres.

Work out a budget. How much you spend will not only be influenced by what you can afford but also what you can and cannot live with or without. Having decided on a

budget, the next stage is research. Buy some interior design magazines and pinpoint what you like and don’t like in the kitchens you see. Having established a basic idea of your needs it is now time to visit the specialists, who will offer their advice on layout and product selection.

Many designers talk about zones (the preparation zone, the cooking zone, and the wet zone), or about the Kitchen Triangle (sink, cooker and fridge). These are good guidelines when creating a layout but an experienced designer will know when to follow them and when to depart from them in order to deliver your ideal kitchen.

Check the quality of every item that is specified. Ask about the quality of units. Are they made specifically to meet your order or are they in stock? Do the cabinets have full height backs to avoid dust collection?

Are the carcasses colour co-ordinated on the inside to match the outside and do you have a preference? What weights can the drawers carry and do you need full extension to give you unrestricted access? Ask about the materials the units and doors are made of. What guarantees does the supplier offer and what does this cover? The point is you should not be afraid to ask and to get down to detail before making your final selection of units, tops, and accessories. Remember, these guys are the specialists and are doing this all day long, they know the answers to all of your questions and they want you to be happy with your finished kitchen.

Few of us will refit more than a handful of kitchens in our lifetime, so when we do go for it, it must be right. You spend too much time in the kitchen to be complacent about it. Nowhere is the old adage ‘proper preparation prevents poor performance’ more pertinent. Taking the time to think, plan and follow the advice of your designer or supplier will pay off and the result will be a kitchen that really will be the heart of your home. n OCIO magazine

implemente mírelo - Aunque no tuviese esa entrada teatral de las puertas en forma de alas de gaviota, el SLS AMG tendría una gran presencia. Oh, tiene muchas prestaciones del legendario 300SL de los años 50 y 60 - justificadamente el diseño más celebrado del fabricante de coches - pero, esto no es una recreación de glorias pasadas, el SLS es el coche de producción más avanzada del que la empresa haya hecho entrega.

Déle un toque al mando de la llave y el tirador de la puerta lisa se abre para darle la bienvenida. Un suave tirón envía las alas dramáticamente hacia el cielo con poco esfuerzo. Subir a bordo no es tan difícil aunque se tarda un poco en adaptarse al inusual estilo de entrada. Una vez dentro, el interior del SLS esta generalmente bien ejecutado pero, quizás carece la sensación de ocasión que las puertas prometen. Blip the key fob and the flush door handle pops out to greet you. A gentle tug sends the gullwing dramatically skyward with little effort. Climbing aboard isn’t too difficult albeit it takes a little while to adjust to the unusal style of entry. Once inside, the SLS’ interior is generally well executed, but perhaps lacks the sense of occasion that the doors promise.

As you might expect, interior storage space is at a premium in a car like this but it is still a very livable everyday coupe, with niceties like iPod integration, Bluetooth and a reasonably sized boot.

In terms of performance, statistics tell us that it has 563 horsepower (at 6,800 RPM) and offers 0-100 kmh in 3.8 seconds and 200 kmh in around 11.8 seconds. These stats are interesting but they tell you nothing about how it feels to be behind the wheel, which is just amazing. There is no doubt that u

Esa amplia postura, bajo centro de gravedad y la relativa ligereza de peso hace que sea de una rápida respuesta transitoria. Es un testamento del talento de ingeniería de AMG que en su primer diseño tan innovador no sea sólo versátil, sino que también está verdaderamente conectado en como se siente al conducir. El largo capó se derrite a la velocidad a la vez que se maniobra bien y los frenos opcionales de carbono-cerámica de nuestro coche se mostraron totalmente libres de ruido alguno. AMG puede haber sacado anteriormente coches de grandes caballos de fuerza dignos de planteamiento, pero el SLS es el sueño de cualquier entusiasta.

The SLS’ stability control isn’t the only setting you’ll want to fiddle with before exiting pit lane – there’s a range of settings that allow you to govern how the dual-clutch gearbox swaps cogs. “C” stands not for “Comfort,” but rather for “Controlled Efficiency,” a modest step toward a greener supercar. This mode starts the car in second, and seems to seek out higher gears more quickly for enhanced fuel savings.

This setting is perfectly fine for most uses, but it also puts

a lid on the fun. Sport (“S”) is more entertaining, as it restores use of first gear, executes shifts that are 20 percent quicker than in “C” and the gear swaps themselves take place at higher engine speeds. Sport Plus (S+) brings on shifts that are 20 percent quicker still, and for total control, there’s Manual (“M”) mode, which only swaps when the driver says so, executing changes in less than 100 milliseconds.

With the systems appropriately girded, the SLS is a wonderfully quick and sporty machine that bursts from corner to corner, operating with the kind of precision not seen in Mercedes showrooms for some time. That wide stance, low center of gravity and relatively light weight makes for swift transient responses. It’s a testament to AMG’s engineering talents that its first-ever clean-sheet design is not only versatile, but also genuinely connected in feel. The long hood melts away at speed as the steering comes good, and our car’s optional carbon-ceramic brakes were utterly noise-free. AMG cars may have brought big horsepower to the table before, but the SLS is the enthusiast’s dream.

So just how expensive is one these I hear you ask? Well, we don’t know just yet, but officials tell us that they’re aiming for a base price under $200,000 (US dollars), placing it in the vicinity of the Ferrari California, Lamborghini Gallardo and Aston-Martin DB9, but well north of fellow Germans including the Audi R8 V10 and the bargain Porsche 911 GT2. Some of those cars are sharper track day tools, some are better GTs, but none play both sides of the coin as well as the SLS. n Now all that is required is a chat with the bank manager.

Estamos avisados. Es hora de que los habitantes del planeta tierra hagan caso y tomen medidas para salvar nuestro planeta

S

i el calentamiento global sigue con este ritmo, en menos de una década, paises bajos y ciudades como Maldives, Mumbai e incluso partes de Londres desaperecerán de la faz de la tierra por culpa del creciente nivel del mar. Nosotros como seres humanos que somos debemos prevenirlo o al menos intentar frenarlo.

Todos hemos estado atentos a la Cumbre de Copenhagen sobre el Calentamiento Global. Se han reunido líderes mundiales de 192 paises para hablar sobre la vida o la muerte de nuestro planeta. Al escribir este reportaje la Cumbre acababa de empezar así que el resultado todavia no se sabe pero se espera algún avance en la reducción de emisiones de los invernaderos y así poder salvar el planeta de su disipación y consiguiente destrucción.

Si los lideres mundiales están poniendo su granito de arena, que podemos hacer nosotros? Bueno, como sabéis, es la emisión del co2, los gases de los invernaderos, que causa el calentamiento

The warning bell has rung. The residents of planet Earth must heed the warning and take remedial measures to save our planet.

I

f the global warming goes on at the current pace, in less than a decade or so, low lying countries and cities like Maldives, Mumbai and even parts of London will disappear from the face of the earth. The rising sea levels will swallow them. We as human beings must prevent it or at least minimise the damage.

All eyes have been recently glued to Copenhagen for the 2009 December summit on Global Warming. World leaders from 192 countries assembled there to discuss the question of life and death on our planet. At the time of writing the summit had only just began so the result of that potential world changing meeting is not yet known, but it is hoped that they will make some progress in cutting green house emissions and save the planet Earth from dissipation and eventual destruction.

So that’s the world leaders keeping busy but in the meantime, what can we do as individuals. Well, as you know, it is the emissions of co2, the green house gases, that cause global warming and there u OCIO magazine

global. Hay algunas cosas que podemos hacer para reducir estas emisiónes. Por ejemplo, piensa en tu coche. Esta claro que hay demasiados coches y por consiguiente demasiadas emisiones. Esto no ayuda al problema. Si un día ves que no es realmente necesario usar el coche, no lo hagas; coge la bicicleta ó ponte a andar, que siempre viene bien.(Dios sabe que a mi me vendría muy bien el ejercicio!) ¿Y en tu casa? Piensa por un momento en la cantidad de hogares utilizando sistemas de calor y frio ineficazes en sus casas. Hoy en día tenemos una tecnología increíble. Esta tecnología está especialmente diseñado para ayudarnos a reducir la cantidad de energia necesaria para que no pasamos ni calor ni frio. Muchos sistemas son económicos y en muchos casos se recupera la inversión reduciendo los gastos mensuales y anuales de energía. Si hacemos todos un esfuerzo y usamos estos sistemas de ahorro y usamos mas los recursos naturales que tenemos, podemos reducir la demanda de suministro de energia en nuestro pueblo, ciudad y país y así reducir el calentamiento global. No podemos dejarlo en manos de las empresas de servicio público quienes no tienen ningún problema en cobrarnos lo máximo por la energía que consumimos. Siendo más eficiente en la casa, oficina o tienda, no solamente ayudas al planeta si no a tu cuenta bancaria.

La Cumbre de Copenhagen es un buen principio, pero los lideres mundiales no pueden hacerlo solos, necesitan nuestro ayuda y lo necesistan ya!

Piensalo y recuerda que puedes continuar siendo una parte del problema ó puedes empezar a ser una parte de la solución. n

For example, think about the car that you drive.

Clearly there are too many vehicles that are gas guzzlers and their emissions are a part of the problem. If you do not really need to use a car on any given day then don’t, instead walk or use a bicycle, it’s more healthy anyway (goodness knows I could do with the exercise).

And what about your home. Think about for a moment how many homes use heating and cooling systems that are not energy efficient.

There is some great technology available to each and every one of us. This technology is designed to help us reduce the amount of energy required to keep warm or cool. Many systems are inexpensive and in most cases are self funding by reducing your monthly and yearly energy costs. If we all made efforts to use these money saving, cost cutting systems 38 OCIO magazine

and made more use of the natural resources that are available to us we can reduce the demand on our town, city and country’s power supplies, thus reducing global warming. The energy companies cannot be trusted to solve the problem fast enough, and they are only too happy to charge you and I top dollar for our energy requirements.

By becoming more efficient in your home, office or commercial premises you not only help the planet but you also help your bank balance.

The summit in Copenhagen is a step forward in the right direction but the world leaders cannot do it on their own, they need our help and they need it now. Think about it and remember, you can either continue to be a part of the problem or you can start to become a part of the solution. n

A person tends not to care all that much about the activewear they wear at home, (at least I do not), as long as it is comfortable while performing their workout, but the gym is another story. At the gym, women throw aside their holey Tshirts and ragged shorts for the more stylish fleece, terry, or velour colour coordinated jackets, tunics, bottoms, capris, and so on. Sometimes it can be difficult for women to achieve that difficult clothing balance between being comfortable during a workout while not looking as if the clothes they have on were taken from someone’s trash or on the other extreme, look as if they just stepped off the activewear runway. A women’s body type also plays a huge role of what is comfortable, yet stylish at the same time. In addition, a woman may be dealing with a lack of self-confidence or perceive her body type in a different way, thus affecting her activewear choices. u

How to reshape your body after the Christmas and New Years festivities Cómo ponerte en forma después de las fiestas navideñas

t is always sad when a holiday comes to an end – especially Christmas and New Year that mean so much to so many people but stay positive, it is only 365 days until the next one!

In the meantime just imagine how much you would like to fulfill your new years resolution: to start to get in good shape again as soon as possible. Let’s face it, during Christmas and New Year you probably ate and drank more than usual.

And rightly so, because during this period of the year we meet our family and friends, we talk, we eat, we drink, we laugh....thats life! And now before spring arrives it is time to start shedding unwanted kilos.

Here are a few tips Nothing new: drink lots of water! You should drink 1,5 to 2 litres a day to help your body to detox. A glass of water before every meal decreases the feeling of hunger, you will automatically eat less.

Nothing new either: start doing exercise!

You should put your body into use by physical exercise. For something new, why not try using a vibrating plate of the latest generation. You can achieve quick results either on your own or together with friends.

Seamos sinceros, durante las navidades seguramente habrás comido y bebido más de lo normal: esto no estaba mal porque durante estas fechas quedamos con amigos y familiares y charlamos, bebimos y comimos...¡la vida es así! Ahora, antes de que llegue la primavera, hay que perder esos kilos extra.

Algunos consejos Esto no es nada nuevo: ¡beber mucha agua! Deberías beber entre 1.5 y 2 litros de agua al día para ayudarle al cuerpo a eliminar lo innecesario. Un vaso antes de cada comida disminuye la sensación de hambre y así automáticamente se come menos.

Otro consejo que tampoco es nuevo: ¡empezar a hacer algo de ejercicio!

Deberías de usar tu cuerpo con ejercicio físico. Si te apetece hacer algo diferente prueba lo ultimo con las plataformas vibratorias. Se puede conseguir resultados rápidos, bien sólo o con amigos. Reds The French have Bordeaux, the Italians have Barolo, the English have what the French want to send over and here in Spain we celebrate the Rioja, offering arguably the king of reds.

Andrew Johnson tells us more.

T

he reds from Rioja are no doubt Spain’s best known and most admired wines. but did you know that they are made primarily with Tempranillo grapes blended with a handful of other varieties. Because of their great aging potential and flavour profile, Rioja wines are often compared to the best wines of Bordeaux and in many cases, actually coming out on top!

As with many wines, Rioja wines are named for the region.

The name itself is a mash-up of the words Rio, (meaning river) and Oja, the name of a tributary that feeds into the Ebro River. The wine growing area is a hot, dry section of north-central Spain just west of Navarra, running from just below Bilbao toward the south along the Ebro River. The vineyards are shielded by the Pyrenees Mountains that protect the vines from the harsh wind and rain that blows in over the Bay of Biscay. The region is separated into three parts: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa, and Rioja Baja. Climate and soils differ in each of these sub-regions, and often juice from more than one sub-region is blended together to create a certain style. Wine labels from Rioja display the words Crianza, Reserva, or Gran Reserva, which refer to the amount of time each has spent in barrel and bottle before release. Barrel time can add additional layers of flavour (vanilla, cedar etc) and will naturally improve the quality of the wine. Of the three classifications, Gran Reserva is naturally the best of the best. n

Los tintos de Rioja son, sin duda, los más conocidos de España y los vinos más admirados. Pero ¿sabía usted que están hechos principalmente con uvas de Tempranillo mezcladas con un puñado de otras variedades. Debido a su gran potencial de envejecimiento y el perfil de sabor, los vinos Rioja se comparan a menudo con los mejores vinos de Burdeos y en muchos casos, en realidad están a la cabeza!

Como ocurre con muchos vinos, los vinos Rioja reciben el nombre por la región. El nombre en sí es una composición de las palabras de Río, y el Oja, el nombre de un afluente que alimenta al río Ebro. La superficie de crecimiento del vino es cálida, un área seca de la España norte-centro, exactamente al oeste de Navarra, que va desde justo por debajo de Bilbao hacia el sur a lo largo del río Ebro. Los viñedos están protegidos por las montañas de los Pirineos que protegen los viñedos de la lluvia y los fuertes vientos que soplan en el Golfo de Vizcaya. a Herradura is a modern day success story joining it’s historical past to the needs of modern day living creating one of the most beautiful regions in the entire Costa Tropical. La Herradura started its existence as a satellite town of Almunecar, existing for many years under the shadow of it’s big sister but in recent times it has grown to become a coastal resort with it’s own identity, charm and sophistication.

The bay of La Herradura is considered to be one of the most beautiful among all the Bays in Spain. My favorite vantage point of the bay is from El Mirador de Cerro Gordo Restaurant. But there are fabulous photographic opportunities everywhere you look and the villages of La Herradura with their whitewashed buildings, built precariously on the small mountain slopes, are every photographers dream.

Situated about 80km from both Malaga and Granada Airports, La Herradura has a residential population in excess of 30,000. Naturally this number swells beyond all reasonable proportion during the busy summer months when visitors from all over Spain and the rest of Europe enjoy their leisure time here. u

Pero existen maravillosas oportunidades fotográficas desde cualquier sitio donde mires, y los municipios de La Herradura con sus viviendas de cal, construidas precariamente sobre las laderas, son el sueño de cualquier fotógrafo.

Situada aproximadamente a 80 Km. tanto del aeropuerto de Málaga como del de Granada, La Herradura tiene una población residente que supera los 30.000 habitantes.

Naturalmente este número crece más allá de toda proporción razonable durante los animados meses de verano, cuando los visitantes de toda España y del resto de Europa disfrutan aquí sus vacaciones. Los visitantes vienen de todos sitios, y con razones para ello. No solo se trata de un fabuloso emplazamiento marítimo; también hay mucho más que ver y que hacer en la zona. Playa de La Herradura es indiscutiblemente la mejor y más hermosa playa en toda la zona, con una anchura de 2 Km. en la enorme bahía con forma de herradura, que a propósito le da este nombre.

The visitors come from far and wide and with good reason. Not only is it a fabulous seafront location but there is also so much to see and do in the area.

Playa de la Herradura is arguably the best and prettiest beach in the whole area, running the full 2 km width of the magnificent horseshoe bay, which incidentally gives La Herradura its name.

The beech is sand and shingle and there’s room for all, even in summer it’s never over crowded, in spite of the vast number of visitors. A string of very good beach bars, restaurants and shops service the area.

This stretch of beachfront is very popular area, especially after sundown to enjoy a cocktail or evening meal overlooking the beautiful bay.

And then, once you have enjoyed the shopping in the town, the coffee in the bar and the lunch at the restaurant, there is the nightlife. The nightlife in La Herradura is the envy of the Costa Tropical.

Live music is a regular feature in many of the bars and restaurants in the town, villages and along the beachfront, filling the night air with an eclectic mix of traditional and modern sounds. Be warned though, most of the nightlife doesn’t start until around 22.00hrs and in many cases will go on till sunrise. Then you can start to think about coffee n and breakfast...and away you go again.
