You can recognize references, a sampling of different things that come together. I’m not trying to illustrate anything, but rather dig in and extract something, put it out there, and learn from it. Aguilar is a self-taught artist who reflects on border culture through his barrioPOP distinctive style.

She is driven by her passion to create spaces of art so that they are used as tools for transformative social justice.

Angel Cabrales Born and raised in El Paso, TX, Angel Cabrales is Assistant Professor of Sculpture at the University of Texas, El Paso. His work is an amalgamation of his upbringing, growing up with an engineer father and a politically active mother. His art expresses a powerful socio-political commentary with an engineered flare. The art’s concept ultimately dictates the medium needed for its creation and the artistic evolution is intrinsic to his philosophy.

Daniela Cavazos Madrigal Born and raised in Laredo, TX, Daniela Cavazos Madrigal works with textiles reflecting on socio-cultural issues along the U.S./Mexico border from the perspective of a woman and mother. She employs processes such as embroidery, sewing, and weaving to honor the lineage of “women’s work”, as seen through history, as she seeks to blur the line between fine art and handicraft.

Nacida y criada en Laredo, TX, Daniela Cavazos Madrigal trabaja con textiles reflexionando en la problemática sociopolítica de la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México, desde una perspectiva de mujer y madre. Utiliza procesos como el bordado, la costura y el tejido para honrar la tradición del “trabajo de las mujeres”, tal como se ha visto a lo largo de la historia, y al mismo tiempo busca difuminar la línea entre las bellas artes y la artesanía.

Juan de Dios Mora A native of Yahualica, Mexico, Juan de Dios Mora moved to the United States in 1998, and is currently an Assistant Professor in the Art Dept. of the University of Texas, San Antonio (UTSA). Mora concentrates in the printmaking technique of relief to create narratives of Mexican American experiences, reflecting on life along the border, awakening the social and political concepts that heavily influence on his art and aesthetics.

Nacido en Yahualica, México, Juan de Dios Mora se trasladó a los Estados Unidos en el 1998, y actualmente es profesor del Departamento de Arte de la Universidad de Texas en San Antonio (UTSA). José Villalobos Villalobos grew up on the US-Mexico border in El Paso, TX. His work reconciles identity challenges from a personal perspective, caught in between conservative traditions and machismo in conflict with his sexuality. Through his art, he confronts the derogatory terms and attitudes that he has been subject to. His work centers on performance and installation art reflecting on identity.

Ruben Luna A self-taught contemporary artist born and raised in San Antonio’s South Side, Luna explores the theory of Rasquachismo. He draws inspiration in the creative challenge of generating new mixed-media objects often incorporating the most crude or basic of materials. Luna offers nostalgic tributes to people, phrases, and things found in his hometown’s working-class Mexican American communities. His work is often playful, but at its core, it reveals the ability to be resourceful and “make do.” Each piece is a practice in problem-solving, overcoming the necessity of function.

Artista contemporáneo autodidacta nacido y criado en el South Side de San Antonio, Luna explora la teoría del Rasquachismo. Encuentra inspiración en el desafío creativo de generar nuevos objetos de medio mixto, a menudo incorporando los materiales más rudimentarios o básicos. A conversation with Gil Rocha, curator of The Border is a Weapon Juan Juarez

During the summer of 2022, while visiting my hometown of Laredo, I met a group of contemporary South Texas artists who were part of a groundbreaking exhibition at the Laredo Center for the Arts. The Border is a Weapon is an idea that grew out of the mainstream misconception that the border between Mexico and U.S. is a strict boundary separating two distinct nations, haunted by the specter of failed immigration policy.

The border is a permeable membrane which allows for cultural crossover and germination creating a distinctly Mexican American state of being. One can see it in the work of these multi-generational artists. The grafting of various perspectives and layers of identity creates a rich conceptual imbrication in The Border is a Weapon.

From a personal perspective, to witness how the arts have flourished in South Texas is immensely encouraging as a new generation of artists have positioned themselves in the larger artworld context.

The curator of this show, Gil Rocha, is a contemporary artist born and raised in Laredo, Texas. His art practice incorporates assemblage, painting, drawing, sculpture, and installation. Rocha earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2006) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio (1999). I had the opportunity to meet with him in the summer of 2023 for a conversation about the show that Point of Contact would be presenting this fall.

Juan Juarez: So, Gil, this will be the third showing of The Border is a Weapon since it was first presented by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust in 2022. It’s exciting to see a project like this continue to evolve. In your curator statement, you mention the dismantling of the mainstream conception of the border. Could you elaborate on that?

Gil Rocha: Well, the organizers of that show had visited Laredo, and I showed them around. They wanted to see firsthand what the border is. At the time, Trump was trying to build his wall. They commented, “this is not at all what we thought we knew…” Fast forward to maybe a year and a half later, they wanted to put on a show about the border, but they wanted to work with somebody who really knew the border. They asked me if I would curate it, and that was my opportunity. The artists that I chose and the reason that I call it The Border is a Weapon, is because I think we need to take charge of our own voice. I wanted us to reflect on our experiences, the way that we see things. There are terrible things happening that we can’t deny, but we can take control of the narrative and how our own stories are told. In the Holding Institute right across the street from here, every day I see by the busloads, children, and moms, and they hold them there for a while and then they take them somewhere else, and then sometimes buses of just men. I see it firsthand, and there is no denying the hardship, but we preserve our spirit of resilience, our sense of community, our identity, and cultural values strong. Those values often seem to be under attack.

JJ: Yes, the community aspect, which most people don’t see. They only see what the media projects.

GR: Exactly, and the other thing is, you know, I do believe that people trying to enter the US should wait for their papers, go through the legal immigration process. But then, I also understand what’s really happening, and I put myself in their shoes. Could I have waited if I were in their situation? Would I wait for years, however long it takes? If I know my family is in jeopardy, would I cross? Está difícil. I met some kids, or at least to me they’re kids, twenty something year-olds, who were cutting grass right here and I asked if they

needed a little water. So, we started talking. They were from Venezuela and Ecuador. They told me they had recently crossed over, after a grueling journey, part of it, through jungle. Once they got to the US, they were separated. One of them had not seen his wife in two weeks. He thought she might be held at El Paso, while he was brought to Laredo. The horrors that they described of what they witnessed in the jungle, dead bodies along the way, some were children... It’s intense what people put themselves through. I mean, the politics, that’s something, but then there’s the humanity.

JJ: We forget, or we just don’t see the brutality of it all, which begs to question the infamous wall.

This exhibition evolved from The Other Border Wall Project. How does it relate to the project’s mission of creative resistance? How does The Other Border Wall Project link up to this exhibition?

GR: That project started as somewhat of a satire, highlighting what was happening at the time, at the start of the Trump presidency, when the government called for proposals from engineers and architects to build the wall. The Other Border Wall took submissions of drawings that were humorous, like a wall made of hammocks for people to take a rest while crossing. Another one was a piano, for musicians to play as they were crossing. It was kind of making fun of Trump’s call for proposals. The Other Border Wall designs were actually submitted to the government, and received an official letter in response saying, “sorry, your submissions were rejected.”

JJ: An interventionist project, in a way.

GR: Exactly.

JJ: So, tell me about the artists involved in The Border is a Weapon, and how you worked with them.

GR: Yes, so I pretty much knew all the artists and was familiar with their work. Casi todos son de la frontera. I wanted to show a different element, new voices, a larger collective voice. Daniela Madrigal, for example, utilizes discarded used clothes that are distributed through Las Bodegas, which are a sort of goodwill thrift store in Laredo. Her piece in this show highlights, among other things, the poverty, and inhumane working conditions in the textile industry (las

maquiladoras) evidenced by the deaths of women working in factories. Maritza Bautista’s piece in the show represents the money exchange, the commerce, the trade, a palpable and inevitable part of life on the border. Angel Cabrales has these seemingly playful sculptures, but seen up close, so politically supercharged. José Villalobos has a piece representing machismo from a gay perspective, very compelling. These are just some of the things that our artists are looking at. They bring to light things that are in our faces, but we don’t really notice. Juan de Dios Mora, such impeccable craftsmanship, it’s all about the border. When the project came to Laredo in 2022, I thought, what about the music? It’s such an essential part of who we are. So that’s when Cande Aguilar joined the project, a professional musician, and Ruben Luna, with his neon pieces.

It’s like a Texas survey, but with its focus on the border.

JJ: There are many cultural elements here, and surely this opens up a vital discussion about contemporary art in South Texas, yes? The ideas are vital and timely. How do you see the exhibition in that context? I guess I’m looking for your own perspective or framework as a curator. You’ve kind of touched on it.

GR: Well, you know, I am working with highly educated artists in this collective, and this is just my opinion, but what is generally perceived as Mexican American in art often seems to dwell on the typical imagery, Día de Los Muertos, the Virgencitas. I mean, I have great respect for all that. Of course, we respect and honor our traditions and our history. But these artists are looking at much more than that. They bring very different perspectives, multidisciplinary work, new media.

JJ: Perhaps, in a way, a refusal to get pigeonholed. The artworld tends to do that. It tends to easily define or categorize, something that I’m acutely aware of.

GR: Well, and then the thing is, you know, the border itself. I don’t want to be pigeonholed as a border artist just because that’s where I come from. I think there’s a deeper reflection here because borders are everywhere, not just physical borders that you cross through bridges, but also, I mean, in any city, in any culture around the world, there’s the other side of the tracks, defined borders separating communities based on skin color, earning power. As a border show, this

is not just the Mexican American border. I think anyone may identify with and interpret what “the border” signifies.

JJ: What you just said takes me back in time, you know, growing up on the border, it’s like living in a gray zone or an in-between state.

I know that generationally things shift and change, but I still think there may be something of the idea that you’re not American enough or Mexican enough. It’s that weird in-betweenness, something that I’ve explored in my own work in the past, like an internal border. I feel the artists in the exhibition are shattering that state of being. What does shattering internal borders mean to you?

GR: See, well, the artists in this show, we’ve accepted and embraced who we are.

JJ: Unapologetically, yes.

GR: I mean, the way we speak, we constantly switch between two languages. It’s very poetic. And then the imagery that results…

We grew up with cumbias and hip hop. As an artist, I love that! I think that as artists, we’ve made a breakthrough in the sense that we don’t have to do crafts anymore like my grandparents did, and my parents, making things to sell. We really understand the struggle from the stories that they told us. But now we can afford to be artists. Maybe our grandparents had more talent than us, but because of their situation, they weren’t able to take certain risks. We’ve crossed a generational border, and we have a voice, and we’re using it.

JJ: I agree with you a hundred percent. We are not as isolated, even if things are far from perfect. You know, for me, one of the things that comes across from this project, I keep coming back to the Chicano term Rasquachismo, and this idea of hybridization, juxtaposition, and integration as a means of empowerment and resistance, to quote Chicano theorist, Tomás Ybarra-Frausto. Do you relate to this in your own work as an artist, and in this exhibition? I want to bring in your voice as an artist as well. I think artists can make really good curators because we’re all in the thick of it.

GR: So, I think the term Rasquache has been

coined as to a certain aesthetic. It may have shifted. There used to be a strong presence of repurposed objects, at first very kitschy.

But looking further into it, as an artist, I really admire it. I like to study Robert Rauschenberg. When I started going deeper into his work, I learned he was inspired by the Arte Povera (Art of the Poor) movement in Italy during the 1960s and 70s, and of course, Duchamp. There is also the traditional Japanese aesthetics of Wabi-Sabi, and I think Rasquache, to be Rasquache, is just to be organic, to be human. It’s a kind of lifestyle. It can be very polished, but being Rasquache is being human. It’s always been that.

JJ: I believe it is cross-cultural in scope even though it’s been primarily associated with Chicano art. It crosses cultural borders, and I’m so glad to hear your thoughts on this because it’s a concept that I keep coming back to.

GR: I guess now I’m looking more into the inner perspective of Rasquache, not only in relation to objects, but as a way of life. For example, in terms of feelings that we deal with, you know, it is so common to go to a therapist, but we didn’t, I didn’t grow up like that. You just dealt with whatever was happening any way you could. I’m not sure I want to find a quick solution to a problem. Maybe accepting the problem rather than resisting it, that’s a better way to deal with it. I often use the example of the wobbly table. The first thing we do is slip something under the leg of the table to stabilize it, but then what do we do when something’s wrong with us, when something’s hurting? Some people fall into vicios or get upset and scream… so I’m looking at how we are.

JJ: I guess it comes back to what you mentioned earlier about the humanity of it all, each of us so imperfect and full of little cracks and missing parts, and sometimes we just need to hobble together. And it used to be that if you really wanted to be an artist, you had to leave Laredo. When you’re young, you just can’t wait to get out, get an education, and stay away. The older I get, the more important it is for me to keep coming back.

GR: So just opening the door and letting others see that there’s a different landscape for

them to explore...

JJ: I think that the creation of the Laredo Center for the Arts presents the possibility of a promising future for artists in that region. With the type of shows that they’re producing, the new acquisition series, and building a collection, that’s really important to establish. So, the last point I would like to touch on, I wish to ask you, Gil, what do you hope people walk away with after visiting The Border is a Weapon? Is there a specific experience or exchange between the art and the audience that you hope for?

GR: Well, the original objective is, again, to open the door and let others see what this landscape is really like, what goes on in this part of the world. But more than anything, to invite viewers to reflect about themselves and their own lives, you know, reflect on what a border is. And, and if anything, to raise more questions.

JJ: Right. I do like your response, a reflection on what borders mean beyond the physical, geographical, and political landscape. And how do we get across?

GR: I guess realizing that borders, las fronteras, are universal; that we all live inside or outside of them.

Durante el verano de 2022, mientras visitaba mi ciudad natal de Laredo, conocí a un grupo de artistas contemporáneos del sur de Texas que formaban parte de una nueva exposición en el Centro de las Arte de Laredo. La Frontera es un arma es una idea que surge de la noción errónea y generalizada de que la frontera entre México y los Estados Unidos es un límite estricto que separa dos naciones acosadas por el espectro de una política de inmigración fallida.

La frontera es una membrana permeable que permite el cruce y la germinación cultural, creando un estado de ser distintivo y mexicanoamericano. Eso se percibe apreciar en el trabajo de estos artistas.

El injerto de diversas perspectivas y formas de identidad crea una rica imbricación conceptual en La Frontera es un arma.

Desde una perspectiva personal, presenciar cómo las artes han florecido en el sur de Texas es enormemente alentador, ya que una nueva generación de artistas se ha posicionado en el contexto más amplio del mundo del arte.

Gil Rocha: Bueno, los organizadores de esa exposición visitaron Laredo, y yo los llevé a recorrer la zona fronteriza. Querían ver de primera mano lo que era la frontera. En ese momento, Trump estaba tratando de construir su muro. Comentaron: “esto no es en absoluto lo que pensábamos que sabíamos...”. Al año y medio de aquella visita, quisieron montar una exhibición sobre la frontera, pero querían trabajar con alguien que realmente conociera la frontera. Me invitaron a curar la muestra, y esa fue mi oportunidad. Los artistas que elegí y la razón por la que lo llamo La frontera es un arma, es porque creo que debemos tomar el control de nuestra propia voz. Quería que reflexionáramos sobre nuestras experiencias, la forma en que vemos las cosas. Hay cosas terribles que suceden, no se puede negar, pero podemos tomar el control de la narrativa y de cómo se cuentan nuestras historias. En el Instituto Holding, justo al cruzar esta calle, todos los días veo autobuses llenos de mujeres in niños, y los mantienen ahí por un tiempo y luego los llevan a otro lugar, y a veces llegan autobuses solo con hombres. Lo veo con mis propios ojos, y no se puede negar la dificultad, pero preservamos nuestro espíritu de resiliencia, nuestro sentido de comunidad, nuestra identidad y valores culturales. Esos valores a menudo parecen estar bajo ataque.

JJ: Sí, el aspecto comunitario, que la mayoría de las personas no ve. Solo ven lo que los medios noticiosos presentan.

GR: Exactamente, y la otra cosa es, creo que las personas que buscan entrar a los Estados Unidos deberían esperar sus documentos, pasar por el proceso legal de inmigración. Pero también entiendo la realidad que se vive, y me pongo en su lugar. ¿Podría haber esperado si estuviera en su situación? ¿Esperaría durante

años, no importa lo que tarde? Si sé que mi familia está en peligro... ¿cruzaría? Está difícil. Hace poco conocí a unos jóvenes, o al menos para mí son jóvenes, veinteañeros, que estaban cortando césped aquí mismo y les ofrecí un poco de agua.

Entonces, comenzamos a hablar y supe que eran de Venezuela y Ecuador. Me dijeron que recién habían cruzado después de un viaje agotador, parte del trayecto por la jungla. Una vez que llegaron a Estados Unidos, los separaron. Uno de ellos no había visto a su esposa en dos semanas.

Pensaba que podría estar retenida en El Paso, mientras a él lo traían a Laredo. Los horrores que describieron de lo que presenciaron en la jungla, muertos a lo largo del camino, algunos eran niños... Tenemos que pensar en el aspecto humano de todo esto. Quiero decir, la política es una cosa, pero entonces está la humanidad.

JJ: Olvidamos, o simplemente no vemos la brutalidad de todo esto, lo que obliga a cuestionar ese infame muro. Esta exposición evolucionó a partir de The Other Border Wall Project. ¿Cómo se relaciona con la misión del proyecto de resistencia creativa? ¿Cómo se vincula The Other Border Wall con esta exposición?

GR: Ese proyecto comenzó como una especie de sátira, marcando ese momento al comienzo de la presidencia de Trump, cuando el gobierno solicitó propuestas de ingenieros y arquitectos para construir el muro. The Other Border Wall recibió dibujos humorísticos, por ejemplo, un muro hecho de hamacas para que las personas descansaran en su cruce de la frontera. Otro era un muro con piano, para que los músicos tocaran mientras cruzaban. Era una especie de burla a la convocatoria de Trump. GR: Sí, prácticamente conocía a todos los artistas y estaba familiarizado con su trabajo. Casi todos son de la frontera. Quería mostrar un

elemento diferente, nuevas voces, una voz colectiva más amplia. Daniela Cavazos Madrigal, por ejemplo, utiliza ropa usada y descartada que se distribuye a través de Las Bodegas, unos almacenes que venden en segunda mano en Laredo. Esa obra refleja, entre otras cosas, la pobreza y las condiciones inhumanas de trabajo en la industria textil (las maquiladoras), evidenciadas por las muertes de trabajadoras en las fábricas. La obra de Maritza Bautista se enfoca en el intercambio de dinero, el comercio, el comercio, que es parte palpable e inevitable de la vida en la frontera. Angel Cabrales tiene esculturas que parecen juguetonas, pero vistas de cerca, son políticamente muy cargadas. José Villalobos tiene una pieza que representa el machismo desde una perspectiva gay, muy impactante. Esos son sólo algunos de los trabajos que sacan a la luz lo que tenemos delante, pero que no vemos. Juan de Dios Mora, con su grabado impecable, es todo sobre la frontera. Cuando el proyecto se presenté en Laredo en 2022, pensé, ¿qué hay de la música?

Es una parte esencial de lo que somos. Entonces, fue cuando Cande Aguilar se unió al proyecto, un músico profesional, y Rubén Luna, con sus piezas de neón. Es una reflexión sobre Texas, con enfoque en la frontera.

JJ: Hay muchos elementos culturales aquí, además de que se abre una discusión vital sobre el arte contemporáneo en el sur de Texas, ¿sí? GR: Bueno, ya sabes, estoy trabajando con un grupo artistas altamente educados, y es sólo mi opinión, pero lo que generalmente se percibe como mexicanoamericano en el arte parece centrarse en las imágenes típicas de Día de los Muertos, las Virgencitas. Quiero decir, tengo un gran respeto por todo eso. Por supuesto, que honramos nuestras tradiciones y nuestra historia. Pero estos artistas están viendo mucho más que eso. Traen perspectivas muy diferentes, trabajo multidisciplinario, nuevos medios.

JJ: Tal vez una negativa a ser encasillados. El mundo del arte tiende a encasillar. Tiende a

definir o categorizar fácilmente, algo de lo que estoy muy consciente.

GR: Bueno, y luego está la cosa, ya sabes, la frontera en sí. No quiero que me encasillen como artista de la frontera sólo porque es de donde vengo. Creo que hay una reflexión más profunda aquí porque las fronteras están en todas partes, no solo fronteras físicas que cruzas por puentes, sino, quiero decir, en cualquier ciudad, en cualquier cultura del mundo, hay fronteras definidas que separan comunidades según el color de piel, el poder adquisitivo.

Como exhibición de frontera, esto no es solo la frontera mexicanoamericana. Creo que cualquiera puede identificarse con lo que significa “la frontera” y cómo se interpreta.

JJ: Lo que acabas de decir me hace recordar, crecer en la frontera, es como vivir en una zona gris o un estado intermedio. Sé que generacionalmente las cosas cambian y evolucionan, pero aun así creo que puede haber algo de esa idea de que no eres lo suficientemente estadounidense ni lo suficientemente mexicano. Es esa extraña ambigüedad, algo que he explorado en mi propio trabajo en el pasado, como una frontera interna. Siento que los artistas de la exposición están rompiendo con ese estado de ser. ¿Qué significa cruzar las fronteras internas para ti?

GR: Mira, bueno, los artistas de esta exposición hemos aceptado quiénes somos.

JJ: Si pena ninguna, sí.

GR: Quiero decir, la forma en que hablamos, constantemente alternamos entre dos idiomas.

Es muy poético. Y luego la imaginería que resulta... Crecimos con cumbias y hip hop. Como artista, ¡eso me encanta! Creo que, como artistas, hemos logrado un avance en el sentido de que ya no tenemos que hacer manualidades como lo hacían mis abuelos y mis padres, hacer cosas para vender. Realmente entendemos su lucha a partir de las historias que nos contaron. Pero ahora podemos permitirnos ser artistas. Tal vez nuestros abuelos tenían más talento que nosotros, pero debido a su situación, no pudieron tomarse ciertos riesgos.

Hemos cruzado una frontera generacional, y tenemos una voz, y la estamos usando.

JJ: Estoy totalmente de acuerdo. No estamos tan aislados, aunque las cosas están lejos de ser perfectas. Sabes, para mí, algo que se desprende de este proyecto, sigo volviendo al término chicano “Rasquachismo”, y esta idea de lo híbrido, la yuxtaposición e integración como un medio de empoderamiento y resistencia, para citar al teórico chicano Tomás Ybarra-Frausto. ¿Te identificas con eso en tu propio trabajo como artista y en esta muestra? Quiero traer tu voz como artista también. Creo que los artistas pueden ser muy buenos curadores porque estamos inmersos en ello.

GR: Creo que el término Rasquache se ha acuñado en relación con cierta estética. Puede haber cambiado. Solía haber una fuerte presencia de objetos reutilizados, al principio muy kitsch. Pero al profundizar en ello, como artista, realmente lo admiro. He estudiado a Robert Rauschenberg. Cuando empecé a profundizar en su obra, supe que se inspiró en el movimiento Arte Povera (arte de los pobres) en Italia durante los años 60 y 70, y, por supuesto, en Duchamp. También está la estética tradicional japonesa del Wabi-Sabi, y creo que Rasquache, ser Rasquache, es simplemente ser orgánico, ser humano. Es una especie de estilo de vida. Puede ser muy pulido, pero ser Rasquache es ser humano. Siempre ha sido así.

JJ: Creo que es de alcance intercultural a pesar de que ha estado principalmente asociado con el arte chicano. Cruza las fronteras culturales, y me alegra conocer tu pensamiento sobre esto porque es un concepto al que sigo volviendo.

GR: Supongo que ahora estoy mirando más la perspectiva interna del Rasquache, no solo en relación con los objetos, sino como una forma de vida. Por ejemplo, en términos de sentimientos con los que lidiamos, es común ir a terapia, pero no crecimos así. Simplemente lidiabas con lo que fuera como mejor pudieras. No estoy seguro de querer encontrar una solución rápida a un problema. Tal vez aceptar el

problema en lugar de resistirlo sea una mejor manera de lidiar con él. A menudo uso el ejemplo de la mesa tambaleante. Lo primero que hacemos es deslizar algo bajo la pata de la mesa para estabilizarla, pero luego, ¿qué hacemos cuando algo nos desestabiliza a nosotros, cuando algo nos duele? Algunas personas caen en vicios, o se enojan y gritan... así que estoy mirando cómo somos.

JJ: Supongo que vuelve a lo que mencionaste sobre la humanidad de todo esto, cada uno de nosotros es tan imperfecto y está lleno de pequeñas grietas, y a veces sólo necesitamos improvisar juntos. Y solía ser que, si realmente querías ser artista, tenías que irte de Laredo. Cuando eres joven, estás loco por irte, educarte y no regresar. Con el paso del tiempo se vuelve más importante para mí regresar.

GR: Entonces, simplemente abrir la puerta y permitir que otros vean que hay un paisaje diferente para que lo exploren.

JJ: Creo que la creación del Centro de Arte de Laredo presenta la posibilidad de un futuro prometedor para los artistas en esa región. Con las exposiciones que están produciendo, la nueva serie de adquisiciones y el desarrollo de una colección, es realmente importante. Entonces, el último punto que me gustaría tocar y quisiera preguntarte, Gil, ¿qué esperas que las personas se lleven después de visitar La frontera es un arma? ¿Hay una experiencia específica o un intercambio entre el arte y el público que esperas?

GR: Bueno, el objetivo es, nuevamente, abrir la puerta y permitir que otros vean cómo es realmente este paisaje, lo que sucede en esta parte del mundo. Pero, más que nada, invitar a los espectadores a reflexionar sobre sí mismos y sus propias vidas, sobre lo que es una frontera. Y, si acaso, plantear más preguntas.

JJ: Exacto. Me gusta tu respuesta, una reflexión sobre lo que significan las fronteras más allá del paisaje físico, geográfico y político. ¿Y cómo cruzamos?

GR: Supongo que hay que darse cuenta de que las fronteras son universales; que todos vivimos dentro o fuera de ellas.
