Extreme conditions, dangerous waves, and 45,000 grueling nautical miles in the Volvo Ocean Race

They will cross the finish line in The Hague, Netherlands, at the end of this June. Spanning six continents and separated into eleven legs, the Volvo Ocean Race is a behemoth, considered one of the longest and grueling sporting events in the world. 10 OC E A N S TATE APRIL 2018

There are seven teams competing in the race, and a crew ranging from seven to 11 people on each team. The teams are AkzoNobel, Dongfeng Race Team, Mapfre, Vestas 11th Hour Racing, Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag, Turn the Tide on Plastic, and Team Brunel. The competition is fierce, but the sailors have more to contend with than each other. The biggest factor in the Volvo Ocean Race where it takes place; in the immense and terrifying power of the ocean. At points of the race sailors may face waves as high as 150 feet. Stormy weather can be anticipated at any point. Temperatures shift from freezing to sweltering, and sailors are only permitted to bring one change of clothes on board. No fresh food is permitted; all the food the sailors eat is freeze-dried. The race sounds daunting; but there’s a saying about how calm seas never make a skilled sailor. The skippers and crew involved are some of the best sailors on the planet. Many of them are involved in other sailing races, such as the America’s Cup. More prevalent than the skill, however, is their passion for sailing. There are no cash prizes for winning the race; the thrill of competing is considered enough of a prize. For the crew who set sail for the Volvo Ocean Race, sailing is an obsession more than anything else. Three of the racers participating in the Volvo Ocean Race hail from Rhode Island. Charlie Enright is the skipper of Vestas 11th Hour Racing, making his second appearance in the race. Joining Enright on Vestas is Nick Dana as a crew member. Dana started with the Volvo Ocean race as an on-board reporter in 2011, and switched to a full crew member in 2014. Rome Kirby is a helmsman for Team Brunel, and appearing in his third Volvo Ocean Race. Racing is part of Kirby’s heritage; his father Jerry has sailed for both the Volvo Ocean Race and America’s Cup. This May, the Volvo Ocean Race will make a stop in Newport, Rhode Island for it’s 9th leg. The race gives an opportunity for Rhode Islanders to not only be part of a global experience, but to witness one of the most challenging and spectacular adventures the world has to offer.

The Volvo Ocean Race comes to Newport this May people associate sailing with Newport, Rhode Island. It’s only fitting that America’s beloved sailing city would host the world’s elite sailing race. The Volvo Ocean Race, dubbed “The Everest of Racing,” is a yacht race that extends the globe. Stops are made from Lisbon to Hong Kong to Auckland. On May 19th, the race will drop anchor in Newport, Rhode Island. “The Volvo Ocean Race is the premier sailing event in the world,” said Newport Mayor Harry Winthrop, “and for Newport to be the only North American stopover is a great tribute to Newport, its sailing heritage and its reputation as The Sailing Capital of the World.” “The economic impact to Newport and the State of Rhode Island is enormous and would not have happened without the tremendous efforts of Brad Read and Sail Newport,” Mayor Winthrop continued. “This event has a much broader appeal to sailors and

non sailors alike than that of the America’s Cup.” The Volvo Ocean Race is held every three years, and had a stop in Newport the last time it was held in 2015. The last time the race was held, 2.4 million people witnessed from around the world. Fans of the Volvo Ocean Race gather in an interactive space known as The Race Village. Attendees not only have chance to witness a global phenomenon with their own eyes , but to play an interactive role that few other sporting events offer. The Race Village will open May 8th, two weeks before the in-port race is set to begin. The Race Village will be located at Fort Adams State Park, and admission is free. A major appeal to the Race Village is the variety of free once-in-a-lifetime experiences it offers. Fans have a chance to sail Newport Harbor for free with experienced sailors. Sailing is available from 11 a.m to 3 p.m. Team Bases will allow interactions with each of the seven teams involved in the race. The ground

floor of each base will be open to the public. The seven racing boats will be on dock for up close and personal viewing, and a replica of a boat will be available for those of all ages to board. An interactive “Race Boat Experience” station will let fans experience what it is like to be a crew member, battling the elements at sea during the race. A “Grinding Challenge” simulates steering a boat, with challengers competing for the daily fastest time. Specific stations shed light on the history of The Volvo Ocean Race. Additionally, exhibits homage to the crew members who participated in the race before, and personal profiles of the members of the current race are provided. Sustainability plays a pivotal role in the Volvo Ocean Race, and education on how to limit pollution is crucial for the Race Village. Racing portion on Thursday, May 17th with the VO65 Pro-Am racing, with the M32 Pro-x racing will be held Friday. The in-port portion Volvo Ocean Race begins

on May 19th. On May 20th the boats depart on the transatlantic voyage to Cardiff, Wales. Racing is set to begin at 2pm, and wrap up at 3:30. Entrance to the Race Village is free; however there will be a parking fee the days races are held. While the race is visible from the Race Village itself, there are options for those who wish to have a more lavish perspective of the race. The Ocean Race Club offers premium hospitality and comfort for fans, promising prime views and gourmet food service under a large tent which seats 350 people. The Ocean Race Club opens at noon the day of a race features a narrative from an expert of the race, and gourmet food and cocktails. Tickets for the Ocean Club are $125 May 19th-20th, and $325 May 20th-21st. For more information, con-

1940’s THE BEGINNING

With obvious signs of growth, the need for a new facility was apparent. Charlie searched tirelessly, and long behold, just one mile from its original location, Steingold Auto Sales was born. Shortly after the move, Ford Motor Company introduced the automobile Edsel, and it quickly joined the lineup.

Born in 1910, Charles “Charlie” Steingold, a Russian-born immigrant, found his way to Rhode Island as a young boy just eight years old. After his years of school, he found work at the local scrapyard with his uncle in North Providence, RI. After years of gaining a wealth of knowledge, he ventured off to start his own scrapyard in Pawtucket, RI. Selling salvaged parts was the bulk of his business, but as the occasional used vehicle sale came along, he quickly realized a new opportunity. Broadway Auto Sales was born.

THE NEXT GENERATION

1920’s

1950’s

With Steingold Auto Sales moving along well as a multi-franchise dealership, things seemed to have come together nicely for the fast-growing family business. Charlie’s son, Kenneth – a graduate from Clark University in Worcester, MA and The University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School – had safely returned from two years of service in The United States Army during the Korean War, and was eager to join his father in the family business.

1930’s

In 1934, after several years of success as a used automobile dealer, Broadway Auto Sales was offered the opportunity to become a Plymouth dealer by the Chrysler Corporation. As the Great Depression came along during the 1930’s, many car companies and auto dealers failed, but Broadway Auto Sales endured. Charlie Steingold ran his business with tremendous efficiency and worked hard to keep everything running smoothly. In fact, he did so in such a manner that he was approached by even more car companies asking to hold their brand. Broadway Auto Sales now held Plymouth, Mercury and DeSoto. 20 OC E A N S TATE APRIL 2018

1970’s

With nearly twenty years of success under the Steingold Auto Sales name, the multi-brand dealership was getting a lot of praise in the auto industry, and yet again was presented with more franchise opportunities. Circa 1970’s Steingold Auto Sales added Pontiac, Peugeot and Volvo to its fleet. Shortly after the new acquisitions, major players in the auto industry called on Steingold – Rolls-Royce Motors, Bentley Motors, Lotus Cars and Clénet Coachworks. With the addition of so many brands in a short period of time, finding strong-willed employees became the number one priority for Charlie Steingold and his son Kenneth.

In 1977, a young man just eighteen years of age, entered the showroom seeking a position at the prestigious auto dealership. With fluent language skills in Portuguese, Spanish, and English, it was an easy decision to add Manny Bernardo to their sales team. Born in Portugal, Manny Bernardo immigrated to the United States at the age of eleven. His strong work ethic and leadership skills spread throughout the dealership, and fellow employees quickly took notice. Within a few short years, Manny Bernardo earned the General Manager position at Steingold Auto Sales.

1990’s

Steingold Auto Sales enjoyed many years of successful operation, until a sudden change heavily altered the family-run business. In 1991, Peugeot swiftly pulled out of the United States and Canadian markets, and other auto brands began to make moves of their own. Manny and Kenneth were left with a very important decision to make. “If we could just keep one franchise, which brand would it be?” they asked themselves. The answer was clear, as there was one brand in their fleet that stood out from the rest. With fantastic quality control, rigorous safety standards and an extremely loyal customer base, Volvo Cars was the easy choice and became the sole franchise of Steingold Auto Sales in 1992. At this time, Manny Bernardo, alongside his brother Tony Bernardo, became ownership partners with Kenneth in the long-time family business. On that day, Steingold Volvo Cars was born and a strong partnership was formed.

2000’s

As years have gone on, Steingold Volvo Cars has grown steadily as a family- owned and operated business, with the addition of even more family. Both of Manny’s sons – Stephen Bernardo, a graduate of Providence College and Michael Bernardo, a graduate of The University of Rhode Island – eagerly joined the dealership and helped create tremendous growth during the digital age. Manny’s wife, Lesley Bernardo, can also be found greeting customers as they enter the showroom. It is truly a family affair at Steingold Volvo Cars. With Manny and his boys, keeping a close eye on the front- end of the business with sales, marketing and finance, it is Manny’s brother Tony, with the help of his son Tony Jr., that keeps the back-end of the business running smoothly between the service department, parts department and collision center. Today, you can find all the members of the Bernardo family at Steingold Volvo Cars, as they continue to grow the historic family business. Even Ken Steingold can be found in the office on most days, as he is always happy to share the fond memories of his father, “Charlie” Steingold. The all-new Volvo XC60 premium mid-size SUV is the 2018 North American Utility of the Year and Volvo Cars’ second winner of the coveted award, following the XC90 win in 2016. “The US market is vital to our ongoing growth,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars. “We are proud to receive this prestigious award and we are committed to building on the success of our XC60 and XC90 in the US, as demonstrated by the billion-dollar investments in our new manufacturing plant in South Carolina.” Success at the 2018 North American Car, Utility and Truck of the Year (NACTOY) awards continues a winning run for the XC60, which was earlier this month crowned the 2017 Euro NCAP awards’ best overall safety performer of 2017, outscoring a comprehensive field of 70 cars representing 30 carmakers across all classes. “We have a strong position in this important segment, with sales in excess of one million units of the XC60’s predecessor,” said Samuelsson. “This latest recognition for the new XC60 highlights our company’s determination to continue our success in premium SUVs.” The new XC60 is attracting acclaim by sticking

The car was launched in its natural habitat – the driveway of a family home in Stockholm – highlighting Volvo Cars’ pedigree in family estates and pinpointing how the V60’s versatile design caters to the diverse needs and realities of modern family life. Few car makers can match Volvo Cars’ history and credibility in making well-designed, practical and versatile estate cars. “The family estate driver is an important customer for our business and has been for generations,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars. “The new V60 honours that tradition, but also takes it much further.” The new V60 shares Volvo Cars’ Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform with the award-winning new XC60 and four top-of-the-line 90 Series cars, which have been the collective force behind the company’s record-breaking global sales performance in recent years. The SPA-based V60 introduces a new standard to the mid-size premium estate segment with a luxurious interior, increased levels of space, advanced connectivity, plus Volvo Cars’ latest driver support systems and other safety technology. “The V60 really is the central point of the Volvo brand,” said Robin Page, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Cars. “It’s refined, has a beautiful proportion and stance, yet delivers on practicality and versatility.” In a first for the segment, customers can access the new V60 via Volvo Cars’ new premium subscription service Care by Volvo*, which offers car access via a monthly flatfee subscription rather than ownership. Reflecting Volvo Cars’ industry-first announcement to electrify all new cars from 2019, the V60 comes with two plug-in hybrid powertrain options: the new T6 Twin Engine AWD petrol plug-in hybrid that generates a combined 340hp or the T8 Twin Engine AWD petrol plugin hybrid that delivers 390hp. The regular petrol choice offers T5 or T6 powertrains. Drivers who prefer diesel can select D3 or D4 engines The new V60 reinforces Volvo Cars’ standing as the industry leader in safety, with a comprehensive list of safety features that come as standard, including advanced driver support systems known from the 90 Series and XC60, making the new V60 one of the safest cars on the road. The City Safety with Autobrake technology uses automatic braking and detection systems to assist the driver in avoiding potential collisions, and is the only system on the market to recognise pedestrians, cyclists and large animals. In a world first, City Safety now also engages autobraking to mitigate oncoming collisions. The Pilot Assist system – which supports the driver with steering, acceleration and braking on well-marked roads up to 130km/h – has been upgraded with improved cornering performance. The V60 also includes Run-off Road Mitigation, Oncoming Lane Mitigation and other steering assistance systems. The optional Cross Traffic Alert with autobrake further improves safety for people inside and outside the car. Volvo Cars’ Sensus infotainment system is fully compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and 4G, and keeps drivers connected at all times. The new Volvo XC40 small SUV has been named the 2018 European Car of the Year ahead of the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland. It is the first win of this prestigious award for Volvo Cars, the premium car maker.

“Winning this award

with our new XC40 is perfect timing,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars. “Volvo now has three globally available SUVs in its range for the first time. The XC40 will be a strong contributor to further growth, taking us into a new and fastgrowing small SUV segment.” The XC40 win means that the complete line-up of new global Volvo SUVs have each been named Car of the Year in either Europe or North America. Both the large XC90 and mid-size XC60 were awarded the North American Truck/Utility of the Year title in the past two years. The 2018 European Car of the Year award follows other recent recognition for the XC40, including the Car of the Year award by leading UK automotive publication What Car? The XC40 sets a new standard in its segment in terms of design, connectivity and safety technology. Early orders in excess of 20,000 cars across Europe and the US indicate that this is an appealing combination for customers. The XC40 roll-out will soon extend to China – the world’s biggest car market – where Volvo is expecting similar strong interest. The XC40 is the first model on Volvo Cars’ new compact modular vehicle architecture (CMA), which will underpin all upcoming cars in the 40 Series, including fully electrified vehicles. Co-developed together with Geely, CMA provides the company with the necessary economies of scale for this segment. The XC40 is also the first Volvo to come with a car-sharing feature, enabled via Volvo’s digital key technology and its connected services platform Volvo On Call. XC40 owners can simply share their car with family and friends without having to hand over a physical key. In another first, the XC40 launched Volvo Cars’ new subscription service, Care by Volvo, which offers car

access via a monthly flat-fee subscription rather than ownership. Care by Volvo makes having a car as transparent, easy and hassle free as having a phone. Safety and driver assistance features on the XC40 include Volvo Cars’ Pilot Assist system, City Safety, Run-off Road protection and mitigation, Cross Traffic alert with brake support and the 360° Camera that helps drivers manoeuvre their car into tight parking spaces. The XC40 also offers ingenious interior design and storage ideas with more functional storage space in the doors and under the seats, a special space for phones including inductive charging, a foldout hook for small bags, plus a removable waste bin in the tunnel console. In 2017, the company announced its commitment to electrify all Volvo Cars launched from 2019. In line with this leadership position in electrification, a hybridised as well as a pure electric powertrain option for the XC40 will be added later.
