Local Leaders Invest in the Future of Oceanside

In September, the Chamber kicked off the second cohort of its new Oceanside Leadership Academy. This program, developed and planned in 2022, graduated its first cohort in June of this year and has built momentum that promises long-term success. Several local employers have already demonstrated a commitment to utilize the Academy as a professional development opportunity for their staff. This includes the Oceanside Chamber, as our team member Porsche Copeland graduated with the Spring cohort and Tracy Chin and Rosie Hurt are part of the Fall cohort.

The vision of the program is to “develop a quality pool of emerging and aspiring leaders across private and public sectors that are dedicated to the advancement of a thriving and united Oceanside”.

The key to the successful launch of OLA has been the willingness of community leaders to step up and share their knowledge and expertise with aspiring leaders. Leaders from a variety of sectors have stepped up to provide insight into their leadership philosophies, how they have lead during challenging times, how they create work-life balance, and how they build their teams in a way that allows their organizations to thrive.

These leaders have shown a selfless commitment to helping those inside their respective organizations, as well as members of our community reach their fullest potential. As I see the impact the Academy is having on its participants, I am optimistic about the future of Oceanside and the influence these individuals will have on our community.

To learn more about OLA and the local leaders who have made this program possible, please visit www. OceansideLeadershipAcademy.com.

Who benefits from local municipal bonds in our community?

Our local community is a place we like to call home! It’s where we choose to work and play. It’s where we raise our families.

Our lives are enriched by convenient services we enjoy each day. Many of these services are paid for by municipal bonds.

Municipal bonds play a pivotal role in helping build and transform our communities.

When you invest in municipal bonds, you may be helping fund our public schools, building bridges and roads on which we travel each day, and building quality housing for our elderly. Municipal investments finance our airports, fire departments, hospitals, libraries, parks, the water systems that support our homes, and so much more. As a municipal bond investor, you are helping your community!

If you want to keep more of your hard-earned dollars, you may also appreciate the attractive tax-free income from municipal bonds.

Stifel plays a significant role in our region’s municipal bond market. We will be happy to help you find which tax-free municipal bond investments may be right for you.

*Source: SDC, 2021 negotiated transactions ranked by number of issues Income from municipal bonds may be subject to state and alternative minimum taxes, and capital gains tax may apply if bonds are sold prior to maturity. When investing in bonds, it is important to note that as interest rates rise, bond prices will fall.

SOCAL Workforce Project Highlights Diversity of Career Opportunities in

Oceanside and North County Region

SOCAL is a collaborative program between education and industry created by Tri-City Medical Center, the San Diego North Economic Development Council and Carlsbad, Oceanside, Vista, Greater Escondido, San Marcos and Encinitas Chambers of Commerce. The vision is to give middle school, high school, post-secondary students and transitioning adults an opportunity to gain insights into career pathways, while allowing businesses and local organizations to participate in these students’ career exploration.

The site now features nearly 100 different career opportunities, about 40 of which are with Oceanside employers. Some of the Oceanside careers that are highlighted include a Welder, Chef, Pre-School Teacher, Emergency Medical Technician, HVAC Maintenance Specialist, Automotive Service Technician and Production Worker Supervisor.

“We have tried to make sure that SOCAL features a wide range of opportunities for our youth,” said

BASE Programs: Childcare Center Director

Chamber CEO, Scott Ashton. “While some of the careers do require advanced degrees, there are many that involve on the job training or certification programs. We are focused on ensuring that the various trades will be represented on the site.”

The SOCAL project has drawn grant funding from various entities including the City of Oceanside and the County of San Diego. Grant funds are typically dedicated toward allowing small businesses the opportunity to participate. For more information on the program, please contact Scott Ashton at 760-7221534 or scott@oceansidechamber.com.

The following are some of the newer videos that have been added to the SOCAL Workforce website through a partnership with the City of Oceanside using American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Funding. For a complete library of videos and career opportunities, visit www.SOCALWorkforce.org.

Meet Emily Dutcher, Program Director, who tells us all about her role with B.A.S.E. Programs at Ivey Ranch Elementary School, an expanded learning program that provides quality enrichment opportunities to elementary aged students during non-school hours. A Program Director must work well under pressure, think creatively, and must be great at multitasking. In Emily’s role your duties may include assisting in the preparation and implementation of monthly lesson plans, leading a class in age-appropriate lessons, coordination with school faculty and BASE team, and providing quality interaction with students, teachers and parents. This is an excellent position for a recent graduate and/or someone desiring a career in education.

OCEANSIDE'S FINEST BASKETBALL PROGRAM

Southern California’s Free, Premier Youth Basketball Organization Focused on Teaching Basketball Fundamentals

Oceanside’s Finest is Southern California’s premier youth basketball organization focused on teaching basketball fundamentals 100% cost-free to all kids. Founded over 25 years ago, the program is a certified non-profit with all proceeds used strictly for the development of young basketball players in the area. Oceanside’s Finest provides underprivileged youth the opportunity to be mentored by experienced and caring coaches, play an active sport in a supportive yet competitive environment, and learn important skills like teamwork and leadership. Regardless of their financial situation, every child is invited to participate and grow in a community dedicated to pushing them to achieve their potential. Through grants and fundraising, the program covers all fees associated with playing including skills training taught

by former collegiate and NBA players, uniform costs, competitive league and tournament fees, gym rental, insurance, and more.

Unlike other club programs that promote individual success, Oceanside’s Finest builds players through a team-oriented style of play that values cooperation and hard work. The main goal of the program is for children to learn important skills that will translate into the world and hopefully result in high school basketball or even collegiate play. Over 100 alumni from the Oceanside’s Finest team have gone on to play basketball in college, with many of them earning scholarships.

The organization utilizes local facilities to host a Skills Camp every Wednesday and Friday from 5:30 PM - 7

PM. Players aged 5 to 14 are taught the basic aspects of the game such as dribbling, shooting and defense. Players are required to maintain good grades and attend both a skills practice and a teams practice which results in a 2-day weekly commitment. After a player shows talent and dedication, they are given a jersey and asked to play for the team, which practices every Monday. The five Oceanside’s Finest teams play top level competition in Southern California and participate in local tournaments.

When asked about the program’s significance in the community, Oceanside’s Finest Coach Donal Yasukochi emphasized, “Oceanside’s Finest is really a community program. Coaches, former players, current players, their families; we’re all connected. They’re still friends. We’re a family first.” The program is also looking to expand beyond just basketball and into other

They hold events and parties throughout the year such as birthdays, a back-to-school potluck, Halloween parties and Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Oceanside Police Officers’ Association Plans Major Revamp of Facility

The Oceanside Police Officers’’ Association is passionate about serving our city and remains dedicated to ensuring safety and fostering trust. Through proactive engagement, community outreach programs, and a commitment to building lasting connections, the team takes immense pride in making Oceanside a secure and thriving place for everyone. By combining financial support to community organizations and their hands-on participation, the Oceanside Police Officers’ Association strives to create a lasting impact that reflects their dedication to a stronger, more interconnected community.

Recognizing their impact on overall community safety and wellness, the Oceanside Police Officers’ Association primarily focuses on the betterment of both the sworn and non-sworn police officers employed by the Oceanside Police Department. A membership comprised of Oceanside police officers and the non-sworn professional staff, the association’s primary function is to negotiate proper pay and benefits and to ensure that the officers’

overall wellness and morale remains high. More importantly, the organization works to proactively guarantee officers live a long and healthy life well after retirement.

The overarching goal of the facility is to provide Oceanside’s officers with an escape to focus on both physical and mental wellness, which would in turn increase their overall quality of living.

Currently, the Oceanside Police Officers’ Association is working to raise $350,000 to revamp their current facility. Joe Roy, Vice President of the Oceanside Police Officers’ Association, explains, “The life expectancy rate for a first responder is 57 years old. At 57 years old you can start drawing a pension. Therefore, we are essentially asking our first responders to work until the day they’re expected to die.” Roy’s vision for the facility is to create a top-tier, 24-hour fitness

center where Oceanside’s officers can go to get faster, stronger and healthier. In addition to the fitness center, the revamp would include an advanced learning center for officers to receive valuable training at no additional cost and a recreation lounge where officers can rest, hold functions, team building activities, and more. The overarching goal of the facility is to provide Oceanside’s officers with an escape to focus on both physical and mental wellness, which would in turn increase their overall quality of living.

Roy explains, “We are in a crisis. This is a bold and proactive move to recruit and retain officers.”

The addition of this new facility would play a huge part in retaining and growing Oceanside’s current police force. In turn, officers would have the ability to continually serve our community, keeping our city secure and thriving. Those who have donated or partnered with the Oceanside Police Officers’ Association explain their contribution is viewed as an investment in our community, an investment in those who protect us, and an investment in the future of Oceanside.

The Oceanside Police Officers’ Foundation is located at 4141 Avenida De La Plata Oceanside, CA 92056. To learn more about the organization and how they plan to spend their fundraising dollars, check out this short video https:// vimeo.com/845131612?share=copy.

Over 200 Engaged Residents Attend Re:Beach Workshop

International design firms gathered with community members to gain insight and feedback on potential sand retention solutions for Oceanside beaches

On Tuesday, August 29, the City of Oceanside, in partnership with GHD and Resilient Cities Catalyst, hosted its first of three public workshops for RE:BEACH Oceanside. RE:BEACH is the City of Oceanside’s Coastal Resilience Competition, bringing together three teams from around the world to develop innovative sand retention pilot projects. Only one team, and their winning design, will be selected to move into final engineering and permitting at the conclusion of the competition. Over 200 members of the public were in attendance to meet with the Design Teams and view presentations on ideas to solve the challenges of shoreline erosion in Oceanside.

The Design Teams (Deltares/MVDRV, SCAPE/ESA, and International Coastal Management) each presented a variety of preliminary concepts for wider beaches and sand retention, ranging from off-shore structures

to nature-based solutions, based on their unique knowledge and previous successes around the globe.

“One of the best parts about the workshop was how freely the community was able to interact with the Design Teams about various aspects of the presented designs or processes. Most people were there to learn and give feedback on the designs, but there were also technical folks in attendance to learn about solutions that they could bring back to their own jurisdictions,” said Oceanside Coastal Zone Administrator Jayme Timberlake. “I feel a lot of gratitude for everyone who came out and dedicated time to working on this highly local, yet also regional issue.”

For those who missed the first workshop, a recording is available at www.rebeach.org.

At the next RE:BEACH public workshop on October 17, the three Teams will present their refined concepts

and the community will have a second opportunity to share input to help them further hone their designs. Teams will return for a third and final workshop on December 13, when they will present their final designs. The RE:BEACH Jury, comprised of leaders from across North County, experts in coastal dynamics and marine habitats, and local community group leaders, will vote to identify a “winner” or “preferred alternative,” which will be considered by the Oceanside City Council in January 2024. Chamber CEO, Scott Ashton is a member of the Jury.

“The unique and exciting component of RE:BEACH is that the City of Oceanside is committed to actualizing the winning design alternative,” said Sam Carter, Founding Principal of Resilient Cities Catalyst. “We’re excited for the outcome of this competition and feel secure in knowing we have the best design firms working to solve this urgent issue.”

the geographic context. What sets this process apart from other, more traditional design competition processes, is its direct link to the engineering design and permitting phases for construction. The ultimate outcome of this process will be a shovel-ready sand retention pilot project to be continually managed under the City’s new Coastal Zone Administration. Learn more about RE:BEACH and sign up for updates by visiting REBEACH.org.

Jury member and professional marine biologist Karen Green said, “I am impressed with the public turnout at this first workshop and look forward to an open dialogue during the design competition.” Karen indicated during the jury selection process that she hopes to apply her expertise to help Oceanside select a design that protects sensitive biological resources, enhances ecosystem values, minimizes environmental impacts, and is forward-looking in terms of costeffective maintenance and sustainability. Each of the competition’s Design Teams must adhere to many requirements in their project designs to ensure beaches to the south of Oceanside are not negatively impacted; the design is realistic and fundable; and that they provide tertiary benefits like restored habitat, improved beach access and public amenities, or other community benefits. Designers have access to previous engineering efforts by the City to ensure their designs are technically viable in

Oceanside Leadership Academy Graduates First Cohort and Launches Fall Season

Earlier this year, the Chamber graduated its first Oceanside Leadership Academy cohort in a ceremony hosted at the Oceanside Museum of Art. A total of 31 participants graduated from the inaugural OLA program after 9 weeks of sessions that featured an overview of leadership in various sectors including Health Care, STEM Technologies, Hospitality/Tourism, Military, Municipal government, Entrepreneurship, and the Non-Profit sector.

Throughout the program, participants learned from some of the region’s key leaders on various leadership philosophies and how to lead teams through internal and external organizational challenges.

Some of Oceanside’s leading employers like Frontwave Credit Union, Genentech, Arrowood Golf Course and the City of Oceanside are using Oceanside Leadership Academy as a professional development opportunity for their staff.

Frontwave Credit Union CEO Bill Birnie had this to say about the program: “The Oceanside Leadership Academy is an amazing program for the emerging leaders within your organization.  The exposure to

exceptional leaders in business, the military and the public sector is extraordinary!  I know of no other program that provides such diverse perspectives on leadership, vision and personal growth.”

Mark Reeves, Director of Branch Experience for Frontwave, graduated with the first cohort. “The Oceanside Leadership Academy is an eye-opening program, that I highly recommend for any leader, emerging or tenured, within and around the Oceanside area. The program delivers a unique opportunity that provides firsthand leadership development skills and techniques from a diverse lineup of well-accomplished leaders throughout the Oceanside Community”, said Reeves.

While the Chamber’s initial plan was to run the Academy each Spring, the plans now include a Fall session as well. The program’s second cohort kicked off on September 9th with 32 participants and will run through November 2nd.

New sessions are planned for Spring and Fall of 2024. More information will be available this fall at www.

“Math can change their lives, and they can change the world.”

Nita Arora, Owner and Center Director for Mathnasium of Oceanside North, began her career in the engineering field. However, with two growing children, Nita quickly recognized her passion for education and began to volunteer as a teacher. Given her background in engineering, mathematics came naturally and Nita found her solution to the equation; Mathnasium, a math-specific learning center. She trusted the company’s principles, the teaching style, the proven-results, and opened her own franchise location in 2018. Today, Nita enjoys watching the real impact problem solving and critical thinking can have on a student’s own confidence, personality and overall success.

Mathnasium of Oceanside North specializes in math-only instruction with a focused, caring and fun learning approach that delivers results. Their mission is to teach children math so they understand it, master it, and love it. The Mathnasium Method™ is designed to build the critical thinking and problemsolving skills children need to succeed in math. Their unique assessment pinpoints what each child already knows and what they still need to learn. The instructors then create a detailed plan to take the child step-by-step from where they are to where they

need to go. Their proprietary curriculum and teaching method fosters skills that take hold and build upon one another. Students receive personal attention with the student to teacher ration never exceeding 4 to 1. Mathnasium is open to students from 1st to 12th grade who either need assistance or would like to excel. During the school year, the center is open MonThurs from 3pm - 7pm and on Saturdays from 10 - 12. The center firmly believes that, “Math can change their lives, and they can change the world.”

INTRODUCING A NEW ERA FOR OCEANSIDE THEATRE COMPANY AT THE BROOKS

If you walk by the historic Brooks Theater in the heart of downtown Oceanside on any given night, you could find the doors open to welcome audiences and participants to any number of events from highly anticipated musical theater productions to artist open houses to hip hop concerts. Under the guidance of its current Board and staff, Oceanside Theatre Company envisions the theater, which encompasses a 198seat main stage and an adjoining 50-person capacity studio, as an arts and cultural hub for North County. “Ideally, we hope to have the Brooks Theater bursting with activity constantly,” said Managing Director Alex Goodman who officially took on the role in June 2023. “We want to be a place where North County’s diverse community can experience and engage with a variety of arts and cultural opportunities in their own backyard.”

Of its three-tiered mission to produce quality professional theater, present educational opportunities in the arts, and provide a venue for the expansion of the arts in North County, OTC’s vision for its future as stewards of the historic building hones in on that final element.

To achieve this goal, it takes a village, or more accurately, a community - and the community is responding. In the remainder of 2023, the Brooks Theater will host local cover bands, nationally renowned musicians, a Filipino-American Month celebration, an updated adaptation of Sleepy Hollow, written by local playwright Heather Megill, a youth production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside, La Pastorela by local performing arts group Tierra Caliente, The Ultimate Christmas Show (Abridged), and a plethora of improv opportunities.

36 | Best of Oceanside Magazine Fall 2023 | www.oceansidechamber.com

Board Member Chris Shurland is spearheading the Improv at the Brooks series which includes workshops, classes, and performances. “When I wandered into a drop-in class 15+ years ago, I was hooked,” said Shurland. “I particularly love the camaraderie of improv theaters and hope to develop that same sense of community with Improv at the Brooks.”

Meanwhile, Board Member Carol Naegele is steadily expanding opportunities for local artists to showcase

their work in the Brooks Theater Gallery in the theatre lobby. Animal World, the most recent exhibit, featured 68 works by 34 local artists. “The art was so incredible that I just couldn’t say no,” said Naegele. Over 100 people came through the gallery for the free Artist Open House last month, the most the theater has seen for an event of its kind.

Of course, OTC is still dedicated to producing professional theatre for community enrichment and enjoyment. To that end, Kevin “Blax” Burroughs has joined the non-profit organization as Associate Artistic Director to support Ted Leib in his role as Artistic Director. Burroughs is currently conducting a survey of theatre patrons to help inform decisions about the upcoming 2024 Season. “As a professional theater, we believe in investing in our community and it is our goal to get our community invested in us,” said Burroughs. “As an artistic venue we’re here to give a voice to the myriad of people, cultures and organizations that call San Diego’s North County home.” (519 words)

Tell Oceanside Theatre Company what you want to see at the theater by taking the survey at OceansideTheatre.org.

HOW TO MAXIMIZE YOUR

AUTO-BUYING BUDGET

When most people set out to shop for their new ride, they usually focus on the type of car, truck, or SUV they want and sometimes overlook the cost of financing. Whether you’re a first-time car buyer or just looking to make the most of your money, we’ve put together some tips to help you maximize your budget.

1. EVALUATE THE TOTAL COST.

Before you start shopping, do some research to make sure you understand all the costs associated with car ownership. You’ll need to look beyond the sticker price and factor in other costs like taxes, fees, insurance, repairs, and maintenance. Then, add them to your estimated budget so you can zero in on cars at that price point.

2. SHOP FINANCING OPTIONS.

Just as you’ll shop around to find the best car, truck or SUV, you should also shop around to get the best deal on your auto loan. Before you go shopping, do your homework and check out where you can get the best financing deal. By having a better understanding of the rates and terms available at your credit level, it’ll be easier to spot a good deal when you see one.

3. SAVE UP FOR YOUR DOWN PAYMENT.

Starting with a substantial amount upfront lowers the amount you need to finance and helps ensure you won’t end up owing more than your car is worth. Even

if you don’t have enough to put 10-20% down, putting down whatever you can will help offset the total cost of your loan.

4. GET PRE-APPROVED.

Getting pre-approved for a loan makes the autobuying process easier, saves you money, and improves your negotiating power. A pre-approval signals to a dealer you’re a serious buyer who won’t likely feel pressured to take any offer they give you. Being preapproved also helps you negotiate the out-the-door price of the car instead of the monthly payment. These perks help give you the upper hand and, in the end, get you the best deal.

READY TO RIDE?

Whenever you take out a loan, make sure you can afford it and understand the terms you’re agreeing to before you sign on that dotted line. At Frontwave Credit Union, we’re here to help you make the best financial decisions for your lifestyle and budget. Learn more at https://www.frontwavecu.com/autoloans.
