‘The right products are there – just when they are needed.’
The seasons are changing as we put this issue together – the change is acute at this time of year. It seems not long ago the avenues were a riot of colour – in no small part helped by the efforts of our sector. Outdoor furniture and garden accessories along with exterior maintenance products might all have taken something of a back seat now but there’s a host of other offerings replacing them, as always. Right on cue. This is thanks to the ongoing planning and scheduling that is a feature of our trade, making it all seem simple, effortless. The right products are there – just when they are needed. This is the rhythm of our year – but it doesn’t happen without meticulous preparation. It’s about constant attention to detail. Consistent effort to reflect the needs of the customer and to predict those needs that might not even be so obvious sometimes. It inspires us to do what we do. On that topic we have another full issue here. We have news from the sector, we celebrate awards, initiatives and some remarkable achievements in the trade, and we take a trip to the ‘softer’ side in The Homefront – including profiling some more Inspiring Retail from Around the World. We also reflect on current, seasonal, issues – such as in our gardening retail article, The Room Outside, and we profile a range of products that are sure to meet the customers’ needs while keeping those tills ringing at the same time. We hope you enjoy this issue!

NEWS Tools before TikTok: 70% of young adults want to learn a trade skill New data from Chadwicks’ research has examined views on careers in construction – as tradespeople and social media personalities Eoin Reardon and Shauna Doyle partner with the organisation to encourage young adults to learn more about a trades career
Trade skill
Seven in ten (70%) of 16-24-year-olds would like to learn a trade skill outside of their regular school hours. Yet, nearly half (47%) have never had the opportunity to do so in school, according to the research from Chadwicks. The study, which was carried out to examine perceptions of careers in the trades, surveyed 200 people aged 16-24, 250
parents and 100 tradespeople. While schools are improving at promoting vocational pathways, over a third (38%) of young adults say the benefits of apprenticeships are still not promoted as strongly as university or college courses. One in five (22%) feel that they have not received enough information to make informed career decisions when leaving school.
Partners
To mark the new school year, Chadwicks partnered with Eoin Reardon and Shauna Doyle to inspire a new generation to consider a career in construction. For more see our special feature in this issue!
ISME survey shows most SMEs avoid crime but repeat victims suffer severe impacts Association calls for more Gardaí, tougher sentencing, and better use of CCTV to deter offenders Findings from ISME’s Business Crime Survey 2025 revealed that 64% of Irish SMEs were unaffected by crime in the previous 12 months, a result that challenges recent public debate about rising crime rates, said the organisation.
Targeted
Of the 36% of businesses which did experience crime, 68% were targeted more than once. The most common offences were antisocial behaviour (21%), vandalism (19%), burglary (17%) and phishing attacks (15%). For businesses affected, the costs are considerable: 28% reported increased security costs, 22% faced higher insurance premiums and 17% had to make expensive physical alterations to premises. Despite 73% of victims rating Garda performance as adequate or very effective, 78% of all respondents believe the judicial system fails to deter repeat offenders. A total of 85% of SMEs want more Gardaí, 76% support tougher sentencing,
and 73% favour increased CCTV coverage and datasharing.
Encouraging
Neil McDonnell, Chief Executive of ISME, said: ‘It is encouraging that most SMEs avoided crime over the past year, but the reality for repeat victims is stark. ‘These businesses are paying more for security, more for insurance, and losing valuable time and Neil McDonnell, (Chief Executive of ISME) productivity. NEWS Building industry ready to decarbonise but needs support, guidance and regulation – new IGBC report shows The building industry stands ready to decarbonise, but needs support, clear guidance and ambitious regulation to meet its climate targets – that’s the message of a major new report, Building A Zero Carbon Ireland: Industry Insights & Actions, published by the Irish Green Building Council as part of World Green Building Week.
Embracing
‘As this new report shows us, by embracing Whole Life Carbon (WLC), circularity and collaboration across the entire building and construction sector, Ireland can deliver on its climate targets and inspire Europe.’ So said World Green Building Council CEO Cristina Gamboa, who launched the report at an event in Dublin. ‘This is a vital roadmap for turning ambition into action and aligns with World Green Building Council’s global call to the world to #BeBoldOnBuildings – because together, we can show that buildings are one of the greatest opportunities of our time to construct a better future for people, communities, business, and the planet. ‘I commend the Irish Green Building Council for leading this transformation.’
Willing
Meanwhile, Irish Green Building Council CEO Pat Barry said: ‘The building industry is willing to take ambitious action on carbon emissions. ‘But as our research shows, it also needs support and guidance, including the removal of regulatory barriers and the introduction of limits on lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions, to drive change and innovation.’ Construction and the built environment are responsible for 37% of Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions, the same as agriculture. This new publication provides an update on the IGBC’s original Building A Zero Carbon Ireland roadmap (2022). The report also includes practical actions and case studies for those in the industry. The report found that SMEs in

NEWS Cautious resilience prevailing despite external economic headwinds – Ibec Ibec published its latest Economic Outlook, forecasting domestic demand growth of 3.0% in 2025 and 2.6% in 2026.
Resilience
The report highlighted the continued resilience of the Irish economy during the first three quarters of this year but warned of more challenging times ahead, driven by a slowing global economy and rising geopolitical and market volatility. According to the outlook, targeted decision-making will be required to sustain momentum. As reflected in Ibec’s CEO Pulse survey, business leaders were showing greater caution and cost sensitivity but also ‘a renewed confidence and willingness to make decisions following recent instability’.
Positive
The survey found that 34% of CEOs were more positive about the outlook for their business over the next six months, while 28% were more negative. In March, by contrast, just 15% expressed a more positive outlook, compared to 41% who were more negative. The previous survey also revealed that 59% of companies were reviewing spending plans in response to the current environment, 28% were scenarioplanning for supply chain contingencies, and 17% were reassessing global production arrangements.
Comment
Commenting on the Outlook, Gerard Brady, Ibec’s Head of National Policy and Chief Economist, said: ‘Despite an increasingly uncertain global environment, the Irish economy continues to show remarkable momentum and resilience, with all indicators pointing to strong current performance, albeit with some caution. ‘Over the first three quarters of the year, domestic investment has broadly held up, consumer spending has grown at a steady pace, and employment has continued to expand. ‘But we are starting to see early signs
of softening in some labour market indicators, including our own member surveys which indicate slower hiring. ‘We expect employment which has grown at a remarkable rate in recent years to slow below 2% next year.
External factors
‘However, we remain in a vulnerable position because of the external factors. ‘Whilst the public finances are in a strong position currently, they are also very vulnerable to a more volatile global environment. ‘Fiscal management must therefore focus on restoring a sustainable balance between income and expenditure over the coming years, excluding excess corporate tax receipts that exceed levels typical in comparable globalised economies. ‘At the same time, major opportunities lie ahead in the digital and artificial intelligence revolutions.’
Vision
‘To seize these, Ireland requires not only a clear strategic vision but also timely delivery in critical areas such as infrastructure, innovation, and skills.’

NEWS New orders decrease for first time in seven months - AIB Ireland Construction PMI® Irish construction activity continued to fall during August as firms signalled a renewed reduction in new business. Output was down across the housing, commercial and civil engineering categories.
Employment
Purchasing activity was also scaled back, but companies continued to increase employment, in part due to positive expectations for the future. Meanwhile, firms recorded a further sharp increase in input costs and an extension of suppliers’ delivery times. The headline seasonally adjusted AIB Ireland Construction Total Activity Index posted 45.9 in August, down from 47.1 in July and below the 50.0 no-change mark for the fourth month running to signal a sustained easing of total construction activity. Moreover, the latest fall was marked and the sharpest since January 2024.
Drop
For the first time in a year-and-a-half, all three categories of construction saw a drop in activity during August. Commercial activity decreased for the first time in seven months, albeit only slightly. Work on housing projects was down for the fourth month running, and at the fastest pace since November 2023, while civil engineering activity also fell at a sharper rate than in July. Where total construction activity decreased, panellists linked this to a lack of tender opportunities and muted customer demand. In fact, new orders fell in August, ending a six-month sequence of growth.
Delays
Panellists reported delays in decision making by customers amid a tightening of market conditions. A reduction in new orders and cost pressures resulted in a second successive monthly fall in purchasing activity, albeit one that was only modest and weaker than
seen in July. Input costs increased sharply, with the rate of inflation remaining above the series average. Meanwhile, material shortages meant that suppliers’ delivery times lengthened to the largest degree since February.
Sub-contractors
The usage of sub-contractors decreased for the second consecutive month, and at a solid pace that was the fastest since November 2023. Despite this, the availability of subcontractors deteriorated markedly, while the rates they charged increased sharply again. On a more positive note, construction firms continued to take on extra staff in August, extending the current sequence of job creation to six months. The modest increase in employment was broadly in line with that seen in the previous survey period.
Comment
Commenting on the survey results, John Fahey, AIB Senior Economist, said: ‘The AIB Irish Construction PMI survey for August points to a further loss of
10 HARDWARE & HOMESTYLE • SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2025
momentum in the sector. ‘The headline index was below the key breakeven level of 50 for the fourth successive month. ‘Moreover, the August reading of 45.9 was lower than the 47.1 level recorded in July, indicating a faster pace of contraction in construction activity last month. ‘The sectoral breakdown of the August PMI suggests the downturn in activity levels is becoming more broad-based.
First time
‘Indeed, for the first time since February 2024, all three sub-sectors registered a decline in activity. ‘The commercial sector ended a sixmonth period of expansion, falling back into contraction territory, albeit the pace of decline was relatively mild. ‘Residential construction activity contracted for a fourth consecutive month and at a marginally faster rate compared to July. ‘Meanwhile, civil engineering retained its position as the worst performing of the three sub-sectors. ‘It registered a fourth straight month of contraction.’

NEWS 9 out of 10 small businesses use AI tools, mostly for automation and analytical functions - SFA Survey However, Retail sector respondents had the highest proportion of those that have not started or have no plans to use AI. Research from the Small Firms Association (SFA), showed that 9 out of 10 small firms surveyed are using artificial intelligence (AI) for one or more business processes. The nationwide survey was conducted by Amárach. The most popular uses for AI were reported to be automation of simple tasks (66 percent of respondents) and data analytics reporting (44 percent of respondents). The main barrier to deeper adoption of AI, is the lack of technical expertise followed by time pressures and a lack of a clear business strategy, it was stated.
Sentiment
The sentiment around adopting AI tools is broadly positive. Over two thirds of businesses said that they are either enthusiastic or curious about using AI tools. Three quarters of small businesses surveyed have either started or are planning to investigate business use cases for AI. However, it was revealed that the retail sector respondents had the highest proportion of those that have not started or have no plans to use AI.

Comment
Commenting on the AI research, David Broderick, Director of the Small Firms Association said: ‘AI is the defining technology of our time, and it will fundamentally shift how business is done. ‘While the survey shows that small businesses are interested and curious about it, AI adoption remains shallow among small firms as it is mostly confined to content generation and simple data analysis, rather than innovation, product development, or decision-making. ‘Therefore, many businesses have not yet explored its full potential.’
ON THE RECORD
Over 2 in 5 (44%) of tradespeople say their mental health could be improved and 29% admit to prioritising their physical fitness over their mental health. That’s according to research from Chadwicks the builders’ merchants.
Richie Sadlier teams up with Chadwicks to launch mental health awareness campaign ‘Encouraging to see tradespeople becoming more aware of their mental health’
The research of 100 tradespeople into their attitudes towards their mental health was carried out to launch the second year of ‘How’s the Head?’, a Chadwicks campaign aimed to equip tradespeople with the tools to improve their mental health. Chadwicks partnered with broadcaster and psychotherapist Richie Sadlier, who was sharing tips on how to boost mental fitness on his Instagram profile, arming tradespeople with simple steps on how to prioritise mental fitness while leading busy lives.
We asked them to tell us about the fundraising elements of the campaign with Aware:
As part of the campaign and for the second year running, Chadwicks donated €1 from every sale of PPE (personal protective equipment), which includes high vis jackets, hard hats and safety boots in all branches nationwide, to Irish mental health charity, Aware. Aware provides essential support to individuals affected by mental health conditions throughout Ireland.
Patrick Atkinson, CEO of Chadwicks stated ‘It’s encouraging to see tradespeople becoming more aware of their mental health and taking steps to stay mentally fit, but the research makes it clear – this conversation needs to stay front and centre. ‘At Chadwicks, we recognise the unique pressures tradespeople can face and know it’s our responsibility to use our platform to bring more attention to this, driving meaningful change. ‘Through “How’s the Head”, we are committed to shining a spotlight on how mental health impacts tradespeople, breaking down stigma, and encouraging more people in the trades to open up. ‘Equally, we understand that supporting mental health starts from within and that’s why, in conjunction with VHI, we run an ongoing mental health awareness programme for our colleagues, reinforcing our commitment to fostering a culture where mental health and colleague wellbeing are a top priority.’
Grateful
Dr Susan Brannick, Clinical Director at Aware, concluded: ‘We are very grateful to be the charity partner for Chadwicks’ “How’s the Head” campaign again this year. ‘Initiatives like this are so important, not only to spark conversations and break down stigma but to ensure that those in the trades have access to the support they need. ‘While self-awareness and reaching out for help are vital steps, it’s equally crucial that well-funded, accessible services are in place for those who do.’
HH: Mental health management is a vital part of our health; can you tell us some of the details that have come to light in the recent research? According to the survey, of those that struggle with their mental health, 32% say they don’t talk to anyone about it while 36% say they confide in their partner.

Over a third (36%) say they are actively trying to take steps to improve their mental fitness with spending more time with loved ones (55%) and getting a good night’s sleep (31%) some of the key steps they are taking.

At least one colleague at every Chadwicks location will complete the programme as part of the company’s on-going commitment to colleague wellbeing, and new hires to Chadwicks also go through well-being awareness training as part of their induction process. health, but as anyone working in health and wellbeing will tell you, your mental wellbeing is a crucially important area. ‘And just like your physical fitness, your mental fitness can be built up and maintained if you follow the right suggestions. I got involved in this campaign again to help people realise what they are.’
HH: He also referred to lessons from his football career?
Richie Sadlier said: ‘One of the biggest lessons my football career taught me was that if I was mentally in a good place, I played better and enjoyed things more. I’ve since learned that it’s the very same for me off the pitch, too. ‘I’ve been given so many tips over the years from coaches, teammates and therapists about how to keep myself mentally fit and well, and as part of this campaign, I’m going to share some on my Instagram. ‘Keep an eye on for those, and in the meantime, I’d really encourage tradespeople to talk more with each other, check in, and open up to build a healthier, stronger community.’
HOMEFRONT Retail industry expert shares keys to supplier success Creating outstanding customer value and building relationships with the right retailers will be key elements for housewares suppliers to succeed in the hyper-competitive retail marketplace, says retail veteran Jeff Evans.
Inspired Home Show
Jeff was speaking at this year’s Inspired Home Show in Chicago. Hosted by the International Housewares Association (IHA), the Show was held at Chicago’s McCormick Place Complex – and Hardware & Homestyle was in attendance, as per usual! To succeed, Evans said that suppliers should educate their team about value, use a customer lens in every decision, believe in the power of an item and continually raise the bar to exceed customer
expectations. Evans, who most recently served as president and chief merchandising officer of At Home and before that as executive vice president of entertainment, toys and seasonal for Walmart U.S., has deep experience in e-commerce, product development, sourcing, building brands and identifying new business opportunities.
Examine value proposition
In his presentation, Evans outlined four areas to examine when it comes to creating value with consumers: product quality, features and benefits, brand and price. When it comes to quality, he suggested examining not just the
SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2025 • HARDWARE & HOMESTYLE 15
HOMEFRONT The same goes for great products. ‘There’s always something you can be doing to improve your product,’ Evans said. Whether it’s updating quality, driving down price, improving the brand or features and benefits to keep it fresh, always be improving. ‘Exceed customer expectations, and keep moving. If you aren’t doing it, your competition is,’ Evans explained.
Find ways to partner and build trust
In addition to building customer value, Evans discussed how to partner with big retailers, even when it seems impossible. He cautioned suppliers to be aware of retailer guidelines; some can be very strict. Many cannot accept gifts, or even meals or beverages at meetings. He also said to take time to build trust with a retailer. ‘People bet on people; they don’t bet on companies. It’s basic, but true,’ Evans added. For suppliers just starting out, he said marketplaces are great incubators for new products to show proof of concept and growth potential.
product itself, but how it is packaged, both in-store and online. For online content, he said photos, product descriptions and reviews matter. ‘People read reviews,’ Evans said. ‘Just one online review can increase conversion by 40 percent.’
First step
Use a customer lens in every decision
A first step with a retailer could be as a featured product or as part of a retailer’s new supplier program. Evans said once you get in, suppliers typically only have one chance to make a first impression. ‘Make sure you’re buttoned up and everything’s in place, because they’re going to expect a lot of things from you that you need to make sure you are in the right place to execute on,’ Evans said.
Customer reviews are also important for self-improvement. Evans said that suppliers should always be evaluating what customers are saying about their products, in addition to loyalty data. ‘If your items are receiving below four stars, they are in danger of going away,’ said Evans. ‘Go back and look at why and fix it.’
Attached
Evans said he recognizes that suppliers get emotionally attached to their products. But he advised taking a step back and evaluating them as a customer. When comparing to similar products, he suggested asking: Is my item really better? Answer that question and then determine where you want to play, especially as it pertains to price.
Believe in the power of an item
An entry point with a big retailer can be a single, key item. It may not be profitable to start, but it could open the door to something much
bigger in the future. ‘Woo retailers with something they don’t have,’ Evans said. Suppliers can stand out by thinking creatively about things like price point and extra special details in a growing category, he said. He also said to look at the overall price potential of an item, not just the margin, using the example of a 50 cent item that he went on to sell 100 million units of.
Exceed customer expectations every year
When you throw a party every year, you have to keep evolving to make it exciting.

The International Housewares Association is the 86-year-old voice of the housewares industry. The notfor-profit, full-service association sponsors the world’s premier exposition of products for the home, The Inspired Home Show, IHA’s Global Home + Housewares Market (TheInspiredHomeShow.com) which celebrates its 126th Show in 2026, and offers its member companies a wide range of services.
HOMEFRONT Since 2012, The Netherland’s Balthazar Kookwinkel has been sharing the joy of cooking and dining through great products, human connection and a unique personal touch.
Cooking and connection at Balthazar Kookwinkel by Michelle Hespe Balthazar Kookwinkel was one of five retailers around the world named as an IHA Global Innovation Awards (gia) Global Honoree for Retail Excellence at The Inspired Home Show in Chicago. The gia program is sponsored and organized by The Inspired Home Show and the International Housewares Association (IHA).
Irma Thierig, Balthazar Kookwinkel owner and founder, explains that she and her family always had a dream of opening a store based upon the joy of cooking.
Passion
‘We all have a shared passion for cooking, beautiful objects and the spirit of la dolce vita,’ she says.
‘And as a family with roots in advertising, marketing, design and hospitality, we had the perfect mix of creativity and experience needed to bring that dream to life.’ From the moment people cross the threshold of Balthazar, they’re met with vibrant colours and beautiful products, all immaculately presented in aisles that are easy to navigate.
SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2025 • HARDWARE & HOMESTYLE 17
HOMEFRONT ‘It’s not only a great honor, but it also brings significant positive publicity. ‘More people are visiting the shop, because they have read about our award and want to see the store for themselves.’
Going the extra mile for customers
With seven dedicated staff who treat customers like old friends and family, there’s a homey feeling permeating every aspect of Balthazar. ‘We’re a diverse group, and each of us brings something different to the business,’ Irma says. ‘I embody Balthazar, and everything I do for the store doesn’t really feel like work. ‘When I’m at our shop, it feels like home, and I probably spend more time there than at home!’
Strengths ‘Mediterranean influences and the changing seasons play a significant role in our store’s atmosphere,’ Irma says. ‘The sections within the store are clearly defined, and we update the themed tables on a weekly basis to keep the element of surprise alive. This constant change inspires our customers.’
Further adding to the sense of home, Irma’s daughter Julia joined the team in 2020. With a degree in hospitality management, she brought more strengths to the table.
Broader
With its product choices, Balthazar embraces a broader definition of cooking. ‘It’s not just about preparing a meal, it’s about everything that surrounds it and goes into it – the presentation, atmosphere, enjoyment and relaxation,’ Irma says. ‘This is why we offer a curated selection of cooking supplies, tableware, gifts and seasonal items, all reflecting our unique sense of style.’ Irma says she doesn’t need to imagine what new visitors to Balthazar are thinking, because usually their first reaction is ‘Wow!’
Agreement
The gia expert jurors were all in agreement, praising Balthazar Kookwinkel for its unique and highly engaging concept. They commented that the store is ‘based upon the strong vision of its owner, where every little detail has been thought through, so you can feel the vision in the storytelling throughout the store.’ ‘Being recognized as a gia Global Honoree has had such a positive impact on our company,’ Irma says. 18 HARDWARE & HOMESTYLE • SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2025
‘Julia has been instrumental in the dayto-day running of the store, and she drives the digital side of the business, helping grow our online presence. ‘Thanks to these efforts, social media and our website have become an essential part of what we do,’ Irma says.
Niche
Irma always ensures that all staff members have their own niche and really embrace it. ‘We’re all passionate about cooking and baking, but for instance, one staff member is more of an expert in baking and the other knows more about the tableware. ‘Julia and I do most of the ordering of products, but each employee is also committed to stock keeping and ordering products within their specific brand or product group. ‘My motto is: teamwork makes the dream work.’
Believe
Irma and her staff actively believe that going the extra mile doesn’t lie in grand
HOMEFRONT gestures, but rather in everyday actions. ‘This comes naturally to all of us,’ she says. ‘We know our customers’ names, not after the 100th time they’ve visited, but perhaps after just one visit. ‘Remembering their name or what they bought makes them feel seen and special. ‘We’re always thinking alongside the customer: What do they need? What are they looking for? What problem do they encounter in their kitchen? ‘Our customers feel our genuine interest and are therefore more inclined to make a purchase,’ Irma explains. ‘However, shopping is not just about purchasing something, but rather a valuable moment of contact. It’s an opportunity to create a positive experience.’
Learning
‘Our main goal isn’t chasing likes or follower counts – it’s about telling the story of Balthazar. ‘We do this by showcasing our products in real, inspiring settings that highlight both their purpose and styling potential. ‘All posts, stories and reels are created in-house, allowing us to maintain a consistent look and feel across all channels.’
As any business owner will attest, running a company is a constant learning curve. ‘Luckily, retail is a field where many people come together – suppliers, representatives, customers – and if you listen carefully, there’s something you can learn from everyone,’ Irma says. ‘Listening to customers is of course very important; knowing what they want. ‘Suppliers and representatives can teach you how to do business and what to sell. But most importantly, listen to yourself. ‘Focus on what you like and what you want to do and be unique. See what is happening out there and adapt, while still staying true to yourself.’ To learn more about Balthazar Kookwinkel, visit balthazarkookwinkel.nl.
Gems
Beyond the bricks and mortar
Balthazar’s approach to engaging with customers online was another key distinction that contributed to its gia win. ‘Just as we do in the store, we don’t just focus on selling products; we prioritize inspiring people,’ Irma says. ‘For instance, every Sunday, we share a free recipe that’s created, tested and photographed in-house, showcasing products available in our store.’ Balthazar’s social media channels have strong engagement, and the team posts daily.
Unique
‘We stay true to ourselves online, and the result is a unique feed that truly captures the Balthazar atmosphere,’ Irma says.
When sourcing new products and ideas on work trips, Irma and the team take their followers along for the ride, sharing hidden gems from trade fairs and adding favorite places to eat and shop in cities such as Paris and Chicago. ‘Our community really values these behind-the-scenes moments, and we love that they feel like they’re there with us on the journey. ‘It helps to foster personal connections with customers, making them feel truly involved,’ she says.
Emotive retailing, and staying true to yourself ‘If there’s one thing we learned during the pandemic, it’s that shopping isn’t something people plan. ‘It’s impulsive and emotionally driven,’ Irma says. ‘You can order anything you want online at any time, but people still want to see, touch and feel items. ‘They want to walk into a store and be inspired by what they see, have a chat with the people working there and immerse themselves in the atmosphere. ‘That’s what shopping is truly about.’

CHADWICKS
Tools Before TikTok:
70% of young adults want to learn a trade skill
New data from Chadwicks research has examined views on careers in construction – as tradespeople and social media personalities Eoin Reardon and Shauna Doyle partner with the organisation to encourage young adults to learn more about a trades career
Trade skill
Seven in ten (70%) of 16-24-year-olds would like to learn a trade skill outside of their regular school hours. Yet nearly half (47%) have never had the opportunity to do so in school. That’s according to new research from Chadwicks. The Chadwicks study which was carried out to examine perceptions of careers in the trades surveyed 200
people aged 16-24, 250 parents and 100 tradespeople. While schools are improving at promoting vocational pathways, over a third (38%) of young adults say the benefits of apprenticeships are still not promoted as strongly as university or college courses. One in five (22%) feel that they have not received enough information to make informed career decisions when leaving school.
‘Apprenticeships give young people the chance to get proper training and support from the start, while still building a career that’s hands-on and rewarding.’
Partners
To mark the new school year, Chadwicks partnered with Eoin Reardon and Shauna Doyle to inspire a new generation to consider a career in construction. Cork native Eoin Reardon swapped a commerce degree for carpentry during the COVID-19 lockdowns, turning his new passion into a full-time career. His videos showcasing traditional woodworking techniques have gone viral, and he has amassed a global following of 3.4 million on TikTok alone. Meanwhile, Shauna Doyle from Carlow transitioned from beauty therapy to her family’s paving business after maternity leave, mastering tarmac laying and thriving in the trade ever since.
Key findings • • •
Parental power
Shauna Doyle
Parents and guardians remain the most influential voices in career decisions (52%). But just 30% say they would be likely to encourage their child to consider an apprenticeship. Encouragingly, 79% say that hearing real stories from tradespeople would make them more open to recommending trade careers for their children. Switching into the trades is common: Of the tradespeople polled, 80% have encountered colleagues who switched into the trades from a different career path, echoing Eoin Reardon and Shauna Doyle’s journeys. The top reasons for switching included a desire for more hands-on work (28%), career dissatisfaction (23%), and greater flexibility over working hours (23%).

An opportunity for connection
The findings suggest a powerful opportunity: 86% of tradespeople would be open to sharing their experiences with students, potentially bridging the gap in career knowledge. Demonstrating its commitment to fostering growth in the sector, Chadwicks is supplying materials for a new Transition Year module, delivered by Dublin and Dún Laoghaire Education and Training Board. It teaches trade skills in three Dublin secondary schools, giving students hands-on experience and an insight into what a career in construction entails.
Chadwicks’ partnership with TU Dublin further underlines its commitment to creating pathways for the next generation of skilled workers.
Importance
Commenting on the findings, Patrick Atkinson, CEO, Chadwicks Group said: ‘At Chadwicks, we understand the importance of using our industry position to promote more people to enter the sector to meet the levels of demand the industry is experiencing. ‘This research shows there is real appetite among young people to learn
trade skills, but also a clear need for better information and awareness about the opportunities a trade career can offer. ‘We’re proud to play our part in showcasing the exciting, rewarding futures available in the trades.’
Changed
Eoin Reardon added: ‘I never imagined I’d end up as a woodworker. ‘Leaving school, I always saw myself working an office job, but during lockdown I picked up a saw and chisel and discovered a love for woodworking that completely changed my path. ‘What started to pass time turned into a career that gives me both creativity and purpose every day. ‘I think it’s so important that students get the opportunity to learn about all different career options so that they know what suits them best – take me as proof!’ Shauna Doyle concluded: ‘When I left my job as a beauty therapist to have my little boy, I never imagined I’d end up in construction. ‘I started from the basics in my family’s business, learning every part of the job, and now, eight years on, I love the challenge and variety the trade brings.
Chance
‘My journey was a bit unconventional, but apprenticeships give young people the chance to get proper training and support from the start, while still building a career that’s hands-on and rewarding.’ SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2025 • HARDWARE & HOMESTYLE 23

Product News Fight winter damp with Bostik Breathe – the simple way to beat condensation When the colder months arrive, we all do the same thing: close windows, turn up the heat, and try to make our homes cosy. But with windows sealed tight, moisture has nowhere to go, leading to steamed-up windows, damp patches on walls, and even mould. This isn’t just a cosmetic issue. Excess moisture can make a home feel cold and musty, cause damage to paintwork and furnishings, and even trigger allergies or breathing problems.
Signs your home needs a dehumidifier
Condensation on windows, musty smells in wardrobes, peeling paint, or damp patches in corners are all signals that humidity levels are too high. These are tell-tale signs a home may need a dehumidifier. The right one, especially a quiet dehumidifier, can keep the home feeling fresh, comfortable, and healthy without disrupting the peace. Many people think dehumidifiers are only for houses with obvious damp problems, but the truth is, even a small dehumidifier can make a big difference where moisture levels tend to rise. They’re perfect for tackling moisture in rooms where space is limited, like bathrooms, kitchens, or wardrobes, without taking up valuable floor area. If the thought of running an electric appliance all day doesn’t appeal, there’s good news: you don’t have to.
Meet Bostik Breathe
Bostik Breathe is a silent dehumidifier that works naturally to absorb excess moisture from the air – no electricity, no noise, no fuss. An affordable, stylish, and silent moisture absorber designed to reduce excess humidity in any room, without electricity or costly running expenses.
Why Bostik Breathe is an ideal choice for winter •
•
Stops condensation & damp – helps prevent mould growth and musty smells when homes are locked up against the cold. Safe for homes with kids & pets –
fragrance-free, dye-free and nonelectric, so you can use it confidently in bedrooms, playrooms, and family spaces. • Silent & energy-free – unlike electric dehumidifiers, Breathe works naturally with no power needed. • Long-lasting protection – two tablets cover up to 25m² and last for up to 4 months depending on humidity levels. • Discreet & neutral – no perfumes or dyes, making it blend effortlessly into any home. • Compact yet powerfull – The twotablet system offers up to 33% more absorption than single-tablet devices. Whether it’s condensation on bedroom windows, steam-filled bathrooms, damp kitchens, or chilly garages, Bostik Breathe provides quick relief from winter moisture. Simply place it where humidity is a problem and let it get to work.
Where to buy
Bostik Breathe is available now in Woodie’s DIY, EuroGiant, Mr Price, Choice Stores, Topline, DIY Independents nationwide, and across Northern Ireland.
Why it matters
Managing humidity isn’t just about keeping your home looking nice. High moisture levels can lead to mould growth, which may aggravate asthma, allergies, and respiratory issues. Dehumidifying your home helps protect both your property and your well-being – especially important through the winter when fresh air circulation is limited. Product News Racking system for Hamburg building materials dealer Henri Benthack Hot-rolled lasts better
Customised
The pallet racks, most of which are designed as double rack rows, offer a total of around 3,400 storage locations. The length of the cantilever racking storage levels adds up to over 1,250 metres, arranged in six storage levels. All racks for outdoor use are hot-dip galvanised, and some of the cantilever racks are also fitted with a roof. The height and usable depth of the vertical shelves have also been adapted to Benthack’s moulding portfolio. With the vertical shelves, the building materials dealer can present the various dimensions and versions of his mouldings in a customer-friendly way.
When equipping the new site in Neumünster, building materials retailer Henri Benthack deliberately opted for cantilever and pallet racking made from hot-rolled steel profiles. Compared to shelving made from coldrolled sheet metal profiles, they offer significantly higher load-bearing capacities and allow larger spans. They are also more robust in operation and retain their static capabilities even in the event of ‘bumps’. OHRA supplied all the shelving required for the new location, from cantilever and pallet racking for indoor and outdoor installation to special long-span racking and vertical racking for the storage and presentation of mouldings.
Space for a larger range
Henri Benthack moved into its new branch in Neumünster in mid-2024 after the space at the old location was no longer sufficient for the specialist building materials retailer’s extensive product range. The company can now offer its customers a significantly expanded portfolio in the more than 25,000 square metres of exhibition space in the new shop. The range comprises around 8,500 products – from floor coverings to articles from the tiling and landscaping sectors to roofing materials.
High loads
Following Benthack’s experience at the old site with shelving constructed from sheet metal profiles, the company now opted for systems from OHRA. The company is one of the market leaders in heavy-duty shelving and only uses full-walled, hot-rolled steel profiles for its cantilever and pallet racking. This enables high load-bearing capacities with a slimline design. At Benthack, for example, the 7-metrehigh pallet racking can carry a shelf load of up to 3.9 tonnes – with a shelf width of 3 metres.
Robust against bumps
Hot-rolled profiles also offer advantages in terms of safety – with sheet metal profiles, a bump with the forks of a forklift truck can quickly damage a support or beam to such an extent that the component has to be replaced – or it fails without warning. Hot-rolled steel, on the other hand, is ductile and ‘tough’ due to the manufacturing process. As a result, its kink resistance is significantly higher and its sensitivity to impacts considerably lower. In the event of a collision, hot-rolled profiles deform but retain their static properties (up to a certain extent).

Visualisation supports planning
In order to maintain an overview of the large number of shelves, OHRA provided Benthack with a visualisation of the entire system for internal planning. In consultation with the architect, it was also possible to plan the floor slab, including the water channels required outside, without any errors. Thanks to this structured planning, it was possible to realise a clearly structured facility that offers more storage capacity compared to the old location, as well as simpler storage and fast order picking. In addition, damage to the material was significantly reduced with the shelving from OHRA.

Product News Introducing UniBond’s next generation of cartridges life management. Contaminated parts such as the top cap, nozzle, piston, and inner foil can be disposed of in general waste, while the cardboard tube, label, and ring can go into regular household recycling. This reduces non-recyclable waste per cartridge by 73%.
Henkel sets the new standard with the next generation of cardboard cartridges by UniBond, designed for improved user experience and sustainability. • Enhanced user experience with a convenient no-cut opening, simplifying application • Sustainable solution reducing at least 51% of plastic waste • No compromises in product performance or user habits Henkel, the name behind construction adhesives and sealants brand UniBond, has announced the launch of a new generation of cartridges across its portfolio. The design has been developed to improve sustainability while enhancing convenience for users. Roll-out began in September 2025 across the UK & Ireland in sanitary and multipurpose silicone sealants.
Technology
Cartridge technology has seen little change since the 1930s. Traditional solutions not only require tools and time for preparation but also generate substantial plastic waste. In line with its ambitious sustainability goals, Henkel set out to develop a more circular solution without compromising performance or altering user habits.
Dedicated
‘Our new cardboard-based cartridge technology is the result of two years of dedicated engineering, development and testing, involving over 3,000 professional and DIY users,’ explained Lisa Nassif, General Manager for Henkel Adhesives for Consumers & Craftsmen in the UKI & Nordics. ‘This innovation allows us to introduce a next-generation solution that combines substantial sustainability benefits with improved functionality, all while upholding the uncompromising product performance our brands are known for. ‘We are convinced these cartridges will set us apart in the construction adhesives and sealants market by perfectly aligning with users’ needs and expectations.’
Improved user experience
Ambassador
Harry Redknapp, former footballer, manager and UniBond ambassador, welcomed the launch: ‘I’ve always appreciated a product that makes life easier, and UniBond’s Next Generation Cartridge certainly does that. ‘It’s a great step forward, not just because it’s super user friendly with a no-cut system – but also how it’s helping to reduce plastic waste, without compromising on quality. ‘It’s clear UniBond have put a lot of thought into this, delivering a solution that benefits both the user and the environment.’
Sustainability is only part of the story. UniBond’s new cartridges feature a no-cut system, enabling quick, tool-free opening. Users simply pull the plug out, screw on the nozzle, place it in a cartridge gun, and they’re ready to go. This removes the need for knives or scissors, making assembly easier and safer. The cartridges work with existing cartridge guns and deliver the same trusted UniBond quality, ensuring no compromise on performance. If the product is not fully used, it can be resealed with the cap for later use – another small but meaningful improvement in convenience.
Benchmark
With this launch, Henkel and UniBond are setting a new benchmark for the industry, proving that sustainability, safety, and performance can go hand in hand.
Enhanced recyclability and waste reduction
Conventional cartridges are mostly plastic, and after use, must be disposed of in non-circular waste streams due to contamination. The new UniBond solution uses five key components: a top cap, nozzle, ring, and piston made from at least 49% recycled plastic, plus the exterior tube based on fully recycled and recyclable cardboard tube and the inner foil sausage. The cartridge also enables better end-of-

The primer-sealer provides exceptional adhesion, without the need for sanding, and is recoatable in just 45 minutes*. 3. Decorate and protect Once your surface is prepped and primed, apply two coats of PermaWhite, mouldresistant interior paint, leaving two hours drying time between coats.

Product News Snickers Workwear’s ProtecWork – raising the standard for protective workwear In today’s rapidly evolving industrial landscape, the demand for advanced protective workwear has never been more critical. As industries grow more complex and the risks faced by workers multiply, the need for reliable, innovative, and standards-compliant protective clothing is paramount. Snickers Workwear’s ProtecWork range stands at the forefront of this movement, offering a comprehensive suite of garments designed to safeguard workers against a spectrum of workplace hazards.
Meeting the challenge of modern hazards
The ProtecWork range is a testament to Snickers Workwear’s commitment to worker safety and comfort. Developed in close collaboration with industry professionals and based on real-world risk assessments, ProtecWork garments are engineered to protect against heat, flame, electric arc, antistatic risks, and chemical splashes. This holistic approach ensures that workers are not only compliant with safety regulations but are also equipped with clothing that is practical, durable, and comfortable for daily use.
Importance
The importance of such protection cannot be overstated. In sectors such as utilities, rail, construction, and heavy industry, workers are routinely exposed to hazards that can cause life-altering injuries or worse. ProtecWork’s multi-risk garments provide a vital line of defense, helping to prevent burns, electric shocks, and other serious injuries. By integrating advanced materials and ergonomic design, Snickers Workwear has created a range that does not force workers to compromise between safety and functionality .

What sets ProtecWork apart is its rigorous adherence to and, in many cases, exceeding of international protective standards.
requirements for workplace safety . Snickers Workwear provides clear guidance on the selection and use of protective clothing, helping safety managers navigate the complex landscape of risk assessment and PPE selection. This educational approach empowers organizations to make informed decisions, reducing the likelihood of accidents and enhancing overall workplace safety.
The range is meticulously tested according to EN ISO standards for flame and heat protection, as well as EN 61482 for electric arc protection. Notably, Snickers Workwear employs both the Open Arc and Box Test methods to evaluate the arc rating of their garments, providing clear and reliable information for safety managers and end-users alike . The Open Arc test (IEC 61482-1-1) measures the arc thermal performance value (ATPV) or energy breakopen threshold (EBT), indicating the amount of energy a fabric can withstand before causing seconddegree burns. The Box Test (IEC 61482-1-2), on the other hand, simulates an arc in a confined space, reflecting real-world scenarios where workers may be exposed to arc flashes in electrical cabinets or switchgear. By providing garments that are tested and certified under both methods, Snickers Workwear ensures comprehensive protection for a wide range of working environments.
Beyond protection: comfort and practicality
The importance of standards compliance
Setting a new benchmark
Adhering to protective standards is not just a matter of regulatory compliance; it is a moral imperative for employers. The ProtecWork range is designed in accordance with the latest European standards, including EN ISO 11612 (heat and flame), EN ISO 11611 (welding), EN 1149 (antistatic), and EN 13034 (chemical protection), among others. This commitment ensures that employers can confidently outfit their teams with garments that meet or exceed the legal

THE ROOM OUTSIDE
F
or me, the weather itself dictates what season it is, which is probably the only truly rational and accurate way of classifying – if we really need to – these weeks before the very short days of our true winter.
‘Effective purchasing should reflect the sales and demand.’
Dark days
It can also be a depressing time when the weather works against us, as those dark days of constant hard rain, combined with blustery or even gale-force winds that threaten to loosen every part of our outside world, are hard on many a person’s spirit. Admittedly, this is less of an issue for those who are busy with work, or content to sit indoors with a book or gratified by their screentime. But for those with a passion and love of the outdoors and who love their garden it can be an apprehensive, dull and difficult time.
Glorious
But there can be glorious days too. Days when you wake up to a stillness and calmness as the sun rises into a blue, clear sky, and as you stand outside your back door with the steam from a mug of tea mingling with your breath, and a sugar glazing of frost sits on the branches and shimmers on every solid surface. A day beckons that you know is going to be joyful and productive, outdoors in the freshest and most invigorating of air. A day that you know will be perfect and rewarding, even more so than the brasher, bolder days of summer and spring. There is a quality to the light due to the lower angle of the sun and the shadows it creates that makes the outdoors an altogether sharper and more saturated place, as if it were a tweaked or AI-created image on a huge living screen that is the landscape around you.
Drifted
Now, I am well aware we have drifted far from the realms of retail with all of this so let me draw us back into the practical and less fanciful world of garden centres and similar enterprises to discuss that very same light, intensity and colour. Outdoor retail spaces can be quite dullfeeling areas at this time of year, apart from those bright days mentioned above and even then, they are dependant on having some colour on benches and the quality of the retail structure that protects the plants, remembering too that in retail everything needs to be even better than real life. This is where the choice and colour
of the plants that are purchased by the retailer for sale to customer at this time of year is crucial to how well they will sell, and how good they will look. This sounds obvious in one way – and it is – but it is quite often a key point that is overlooked in retail, let alone the plant side of the business.
Remember
If we focus back to those ultrabright days we mentioned above, which also tend to be the days when garden centres are generally busier, we can remember those colours that stand out on the colour wheel, and more importantly those that don’t. That intensity of autumn/winter light
tends to suit reds, oranges, and yellows especially, but also certain shades of purple as well as true, bright white. These are in contrast to pinks, blues and violet/lavender shades that don’t pop at this time of the year regardless of if the sun is shining or not, nor do those colours work well with green backgrounds, which those aforementioned warmer shades do. And yet, in many garden centres at this time of the year we see cyclamen, heathers, pansies, primroses, and violas in those poorer-looking and poor-selling shades of colour.
Outsell
For example, at this time of year red and

Accessories
The same is true for garden accessories, with planting containers being a good example. Pale Terracotta-coloured, glazed blue, and pastel colours are unpopular at this time of the year because they do not show up as well or ‘look’ right in the light at this time of the year. Bright green, red and even white pots are the colours to promote and stock in order to encourage added sales. The same is true for all other accessories and late-season garden décor, within reason of course.
Accordingly
white cyclamen will outsell pale pink and dull lilac by a huge factor, yet they are often purchased in equal amounts by the retailer. You will certainly sell some other colours, especially decent purple shades, but effective purchasing should reflect the sales and demand, so the majority of those cyclamens should be red and white. All too often a trolly of cyclamen arrives in a garden centre just before the weekend and the better colours are sold out by Saturday morning, leaving the customer with the insipid ‘duller’ colours. Some of those will still sell but many will not, and lead to holding too much stock and eventually a slowdown in sales, and too much wastage.
should be the focus of the majority of purchasing for the garden centre. Think mature dogwood with bright red, orange, and yellow stems – not spindly grades or those with darker stems. White flowered viburnum, red-berried skimmia, or hellebores with big white flowers or large coloured labels, etc. These are the big, bold and bright plants that need to be stocked at this time of year and which can generate volume sales.
So, stock your garden centre or gardening department accordingly. Think of those clear mornings filled with intense lights, and imagine what hues work best as the sun makes a low track across the sky, highlighting the colours it touches. Have that cup of tea and plan the purchasing for your garden centre accordingly. A steaming cup of coffee is also acceptable, and perhaps required by many of you … Liam
Intensity
The same is true for much of the bedding colour at this time of the year – focus on colour and intensity and giving the customer what they want. And of course, it’s not just of benefit on those bright saturated days, this policy also works in duller periods, as those bright colours will also stand out on darker days, especially under modern LED artificial lighting – and sell much better than those lost shades. This type of purchasing regime applies to almost all plant sales at this time of the year, where bright and bold stems, buds and labelling 46 HARDWARE & HOMESTYLE • SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2025

Final Say
A Legendary psychologist described the fishpond effect 40 years ago. It’s still the secret to remarkable success, writes Jeff Haden.
While it’s fun to be a big fish in a small pond, it can also keep you from becoming the fish you wish to become While objective, measurable performance is what really matters, it’s normal to compare yourself to other people. The result is the big-fish-little-pondeffect (or frog-pond, depending on your aquatic preference): a psychological phenomenon where your perception of your ability, status, or achievement is influenced by the people around you. A top performer at a local ice cream store may feel like a pretty big fish; move him to a bigger pond like, say, Nvidia, and that fish may suddenly feel very, very small.
Accomplished
Even if you’re objectively talented and successful, you might feel worse about yourself when surrounded by people even more accomplished. As the saying goes, it’s better to be big fish in a small pond, and science appears to support that position. A 1966 study published in American Journal of Sociology found that students surrounded by high-achieving classmates developed lower career aspirations. A 1984 study published by the psychologist Herbert Marsh in Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that feeling like a small fish can negatively impact self-esteem, motivation, and career decisions. Marsh called it the fishpond effect.
Abilities
Apparently, surrounding yourself with high achievers will cause you to underestimate your own abilities, and underestimate your chances for success. So, yeah: It’s better to be a big fish in a small pond. But not if you have high aspirations. Find a Bigger Pond… The key is what you do with the comparison you make. If you’re a fixed mindset small fish in a big pond, sure: You’ll decide you’ll always be a small fish. SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2025 • HARDWARE & HOMESTYLE 47
Final Say
For example, if I have to work hard to keep up, I’ll learn faster. A study published in Frontiers in Psychology shows competition enhances attention and learning outcomes. Competition increases physical effort and motivation, which translate to improved cognitive performance. Ditto on the having to work harder thing. A study published in Psychonomic Bulletin & Review shows competition causes people to adjust their strategies and find different approaches; strategic adaptation results in faster skill acquisition and improved performance. If I can’t beat you one way… I’ll have to find another way.
Challenge
People with a fixed mindset believe intelligence, ability, and talent are inborn and relatively fixed.
Growth mindset
If you’re a growth mindset small fish in a big pond – if you believe intelligence, ability, and talent can be developed and improved with effort – then the comparisons found in
a big pond work to your advantage. Research about competition supports this theory: A study published in Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience found competition improves cognitive performance and, oddly enough, self-perception of social status by enhancing brain responsiveness and mental condition.
In short, if you see being a small fish in a big pond as a challenge to overcome, you’ll be much more likely to become a bigger fish yourself – and maybe even outgrow your current pond. Even though the water will feel really cold at first As The 5 Types of Wealth author Sahil Bloom writes in his newsletter, moving to the bigger pond can be painful. It’s hard to be the dumbest person in the room. It’s hard to feel like an imposter on the verge of being exposed. It’s hard on your ego. It’s hard to feel like a beginner.
Opportunity
But the pain is a sign you’re on the right track. Pain indicates an opportunity, because it means you’ll need to grow. You’ll need to learn. You’ll need to adapt, and evolve. And because most of our limits are selfimposed, you’ll naturally set your own bar higher. If you see the competition as something to embrace rather than avoid, you’ll steadily become a bigger and bigger fish.
Comparison
Sure, it’s comforting to be a big fish in a small pond. But the only comparison that matters is the one between the person you are today and the person you wish to become. Being a small fish in a big pond is the best way to ensure you will look back and enjoy making that comparison. – Expert opinion by jeff haden @jeff_ haden The opinions expressed by Inc.com columnists are their own, not those of Inc. com. 48 HARDWARE & HOMESTYLE • SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2025
