Welcome to our Yearbook issue where we cast our gaze over activity in the sector as seen through the pages of our publication over the past twelve months.
It’s a timely offering as our anniversary is in June – and so it is that we are preparing to mark another full year of Hardware & Homestyle
This June we are celebrating twelve years in operation – not bad by any accounts, we reckon!
Down through the years we’ve been at the forefront of the sector, honing our offering with news and views, inspiration and trends, advice and observation – and more besides, featuring those ‘in the know’ – both at home and abroad.
Many of our items are well-loved and well-known, from our Room Outside pages, with gardening retail guru Liam Kelly, to our Final Say articles from renowned thought leaders, through to our Inspirational Retail From Around The World where we profile leading stores on the global stage.
It’s a vibrant mix and we are grateful to everyone who has made this possible: retailers, suppliers, contributors and industry observers. Of course, we know that our readers can often inhabit more than one of these spaces!
The bottom line is we couldn’t do it without you.
And so, you will find in the following pages that the tone is often best described as ‘celebratory’ as we look at some wonderful initiatives from the sector, applaud those who have won awards and earned special recognition – and marvel at those who have led the way and inspired us all.
We mix this all with advice and information, as well as product news and features – and of course, our comprehensive listings section.
We hope you enjoy this special issue.

The past year in our sector, as seen through the pages of Hardware & Homestyle.
A collection of stories documenting ‘business as usual’, mixed with practical advice and information. Store openings, website launches, fraud warnings and more...
Here is where we celebrate the achievements and accolades garnered by those in our sector, many of whom have been leading the way and inspiring us all!
Every single day, operators in our sector go the extra mile. This results in a range of inspiring activities which, we believe, are deserving of mention!
Allied with the next section, The Homefront, this is all about our special ‘gia stores’ – and the associated awards – at the Inspired Home Show in Chicago, which features heavily.
A central part of our regular offering. The Homefront could be described as referring to the ‘softer’ side of the sector. Kitchen and Cookshops, Furniture, Interior Design Trends, Colour Advice – and so much more. This time out we visit a special store in the Czech Republic.
We hope to jog some memories with a flavour of events from the past year! From national treasures such as Bloom to events like ‘Spring Fair’ and the most recent DIY Summit.
Our garden retail guru Liam Kelly is a regular contributor to our publication. Here, he presents a special Yearbook overview!
What’s caught our eye? A selection of offerings awaits!
We round it all off with our usual listings section
The themes and issues of the past year were many and varied as one might expect! We look back over the stories and features, the company announcements, product notices, news coverage, analysis and observations. We hope to jog a few memories along the way with just a small flavour of our coverage across the sector!
After our last Yearbook it was straight into our May/June issue where we heard in News how Chadwicks Group had unveiled its newly-revamped Wexford branch.
Wexford GAA stars Lee Chin, Simon Donohoe, Eoin Porter and Eoghan Nolan had been on hand to cut the ribbon with branch manager Enda O’Brien.
This marked another branch in Chadwicks Group’s ongoing nationwide branch upgrade programme, which began in 2018.
Meanwhile, United Hardware Limited (UHL), the national DIY and hardware group which supplies and operates the Homevalue retail brand in Ireland had announced the reappointment of Eoin McGettigan as its Non-Executive Chairman, we reported.
(We would return to Eoin in On The Record for a wide-ranging chat, later in the issue.)
On the double
We saw how rugby club history on the double was made as the Flogas-sponsored Galway Corinthians U20s became the first ever non-Leinster team to win the U20s Leinster Div 2 League and the first non-Leinster team to receive an invitation to play in the Leinster U20s Division 1’s prestigious McCorry Cup.
The victorious team was presented with the JP Fanagan Premier 2 Cup following their final league game of the year against UCD B on 10 March 2024, with fullback Dylan Joyce capturing their team’s Man of the Match award.
Flogas, official energy partner of Team Ireland for Paris 2024 Olympic Games, unveiled its multifaceted campaign, ‘Energy Behind the Athletes’, designed to amplify support for Team Ireland athletes while spotlighting the vital role of community support.
Retail Ireland said measures announced by government to address major employment cost increases were a welcome acknowledgement of the scale of the challenges facing the sector.
However, the group said further significant measures would be needed in the budget.
As consumers around the world continued their search for balance and beauty in their lives and homes, colour expert Leatrice (Lee) Eiseman explained to The Inspired Home Show 2024 attendees the reasons why ‘A New Harmony’ was selected as the theme to represent the seven colour palettes in the Pantone® View Home + Interiors 2025 forecast.
This formed part of our coverage in The Homefront along with another instalment of Inspiring Retail from Around the World where we stopped off in France.
In Showtime we saw how Spring Fair, the UK’s ‘largest and most inspirational’ retail marketplace for Home, Gift and Fashion, closed on a high after four days of intensive buying, creativity and fun, and now looked ahead to its seventy-fifth anniversary in 2025.
Bostik Academy is a knowledge centre carefully created for professionals in the construction market, we reported.
‘Since first opening its doors in August 2021, the Bostik Academy has been attended by a steady stream of Builders Merchants and professionals, keen to get to grips with the virtual and physical knowledge centre.’
In The Room Outside, Liam Kelly wrote: ‘There is something quite special about gardens on a summer’s night, as they seem to transform completely from the bright and often busy places that they can be during the day, to somewhere more tranquil and sedate.’
In the Final Say we saw how a national upskilling roadmap for sustainability in the built environment had been launched in Dublin.
Our magazine for July /August was another full one with plenty on offer such as news of Fleetwood Paints’ Community Colours Initiative, a campaign designed to give back to the communities that have supported the company for decades.
Recognising the power of colour to transform interior and exterior spaces, Fleetwood committed to donating thousands of litres
of paint to various community groups across Ireland.
The initiative aimed to bring colour and renewed energy to local clubs, organisations, and projects that play a vital role in our communities.
Also in News, Sharp Distributors told us: ‘We are thrilled to announce the launch of our brand-new website, designed to serve you better and enhance your experience with Sharp Distributors.’
New figures from FraudSMART, the fraud awareness initiative led by Banking & Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI), showed that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) lost almost €10m (€9.9m) through email-related fraud in 2023, including invoice-redirection and CEO impersonation scams.
The figures came as FraudSMART joined forces with the Irish SME Association (ISME) to urge SMEs to be on the alert and put measures in place to protect their business.
Majority of cases are invoice-redirection scams with what appears to be a legitimate email from a supplier known to the business
Speaking on the figures and outlining the type of scams targeted at SMEs, Niamh Davenport, Head of Financial Crime, BPFI said:
‘We have seen a jump of almost 25% (23.8%) in email-related fraud targeted at SMEs last year.’
Irish construction activity was broadly stable at the start of the third quarter of the year. That was according to the BNP Paribas Real Estate Ireland Construction PMI®.
Housing was the main source of any growth in activity as commercial work was little-changed from the previous month, the report noted.
Final preparations were underway for Autumn Fair 2024 as we went to press with our issue.
With visitors from over sixty countries, 85% of which are actively looking to buy or source new products, ‘Autumn Fair,’ say organisers, ‘is the key show to meet buyers that buy at this time of year’, we wrote, in Showtime.
The spoga+gafa event once again confirmed its position as the most important platform for the global garden industry, said organisers.
Around 28,000 trade visitors from 113 countries took part in the world’s largest garden and BBQ trade fair from 16 to 18 June.
Meanwhile, we noted how the world of home improvement had returned from coming together at the jubilee 10th Global DIYSummit, which took place in ‘The Eternal City’ – Rome.
At the conclusion of the Summit, the delegates, using the in-app voting tool, rated this event an overwhelming 67% as ‘very good’ to ‘excellent’ with a further 23% rating the event as ‘good’.
Eoin McGettigan
On The Record featured, Derek Miller who is President & CEO of the International Housewares Association, the organization behind the Inspired Home Show and gia competition in Chicago.
When we previously spoke, the Covid lockdowns had been impacting these events – and many others around the globe.
Time for a catch-up we thought! So, how had things changed since – and what had been the trends since emerging from those challenging times?
These were among the topics discussed.
In Showtime, we were in London for another profile: Divertimenti on London’s Brompton Road is not only well-known by passionate cooks across the United Kingdom and beyond, but also to many a celebrity chef who had their big break cooking up a storm for customers and staff there over six decades, wrote Michelle Hespe.
In ‘The Room Outside’, it was the time again when we looked towards what were, in many ways, the traditionally quieter months of the year.
‘What does autumn mean for the retail gardening profession now, what are the opportunities and what should be on our minds at this time? Liam Kelly considered the season that was fast approaching!
costs are set to remain a major concern.
‘This issue will need ongoing government attention into the future.’
Retail Ireland Director Arnold Dillon said: ‘Tax cuts and other cost of living measures will benefit household finances.
‘This should support consumer sentiment and retail spending as we approach the key Christmas trading period.’
Dulux’s expert trend forecasters selected True Joy™ as the Dulux Colour of the Year of 2025 – an energising and motivating yellow that encourages us to embrace change and simply ‘take a leap’.
This yellow was named True Joy™ for its ability to bring instant uplift to a space, filling
annual HR Workplace and Trends report, focusing on pay and resourcing.
The survey, conducted with over 400 Senior HR Professionals, revealed that 84% of businesses were planning to increase pay in 2025, with respondents forecasting an average increase of 3.4% across all business sectors.
We saw that the Irish Green Building Council (IGBC) had kicked off a week of events across Ireland, aimed at accelerating the transition to a sustainable built environment.
Summer 2024 was the hottest on record globally and for Europe, highlighting once again the need for greener urban areas.
it with optimism and energy.
Ibec, the group representing Irish businesses, had published the first part of its
‘Trees and plants are essential to cooling down our environment during heat waves while improving air and water quality and preventing floods,’ it was noted.
‘This year, World Green Building Week aimed to showcase how smart design and nature-positive solutions can address climate change and restore biodiversity in our towns and cities.’
Pat Barry, CEO of the Irish Green Building Council, highlighted the importance of this initiative:
‘Significant progress has been made in making our homes more energy efficient, but we must avoid the carbon tunnel vision and ensure the homes we build today are sustainable in every way.
In ‘The Final Say’ we heard how research by The Panelling Centre revealed that one of the top five regrets homeowners had after completing a kitchen renovation was choosing the wrong colour scheme.
In our Autumn (September/October) issue we read, in News, how United Hardware, the buying and marketing group for builders’ merchants, DIY and home & garden retail stores, had been named as one of Ireland’s best managed companies for the first time, at the 2024 Deloitte Best Managed Companies Awards. This was also the topic of a special feature later in the issue.
Also in News, Retail Ireland, the Ibec group that represents the retail sector, said the personal tax changes and cost of living measures in Budget 2025 ‘will support spending in the domestic economy’.
‘However, despite some welcome targeted measures, spiralling labour market
‘Greening our neighbourhoods is not only good for the planet; it is also good for people, and can improve our well-being.’
Once again we looked at the BNP Paribas Real Estate Ireland Construction Total Activity Index.
A renewed increase in housing activity following August’s pause was not enough to prevent a renewed reduction in total output at Irish construction firms amid a fresh fall in commercial activity.
More positively, new orders expanded and firms took on extra staff.
Companies also remained optimistic around the year-ahead outlook.
The headline seasonally adjusted BNP Paribas Real Estate Ireland Construction Total Activity Index dipped below the 50.0 no-change mark in September, posting 49.0 from a reading of exactly 50.0 in August.
Total activity had now decreased in four of the past five months.
Underneath the headline figure, latest data signalled differing trends among the sub-categories of construction than was the case in August.
Housing activity returned to growth following a fractional reduction in the previous survey period.
Activity on residential projects had now increased in six of the past seven months. In contrast, commercial activity dipped back into contraction during September after
having seen growth in August.
In this issue we saw TV and radio presenter Laura Woods calling on schools and students across Ireland to become battery recycling champions as WEEE Ireland’s Schools Battery Recycling Competition entered its 13th year.
The equivalent of 1.5 million used AA batteries—the weight of almost four school buses—were saved from landfill and recycled by primary and secondary students during the previous school year thanks to
their overwhelming participation across Ireland.
Laura was joined by Roundwood National School in Wicklow to launch the campaign, which also supports LauraLynn Children’s Hospice.
Roundwood National School was awarded €2,000 in sports vouchers for its commitment to sustainability along with five other schools, including three in Sligo and one in both Dublin and Roscommon, who each won in their category.
‘On The Record’ featured David Broderick, Director of the Small Firms Association (SFA).
Meanwhile, Retail Excellence had announced thirty store finalists from right around the country in the Retail Excellence AIB Merchant Services National Awards 2024.
And once again, our sector loomed large with a number of familiar names included on the list.
In Showtime, we learned how Glee 2024 ‘wrapped up with a bang, celebrating fifty incredible years as the UK’s number one garden and outdoor living trade event’.
Our inspiring Retail from Around the World continued with a trip to The Netherlands. ‘The 2024 Global Innovation Awards (gia) winner and Global Honoree from the Netherlands has a simple yet strong approach to
innovative retailing,’ we read.
‘Kookx is for everyone who has a passion for cooking. It also has an equally simple motto: ‘everything is for a tasty experience’.
Michelle Hespe explained: Kookx was launched by Robin Holleboom and his father Martin Holleboom with the goal of offering customers high quality kitchenware products at affordable prices, so that more people could gain pleasure from cooking.
In ‘The Room Outside’, Liam Kelly spoke to us about the rise of bird care ranges – items that retailers have found can be easily tied-in to existing offerings.
Finally, think asking for advice makes you seem smarter? Research says yes. Mozart said no. Especially if you actually want to achieve your goals. Jeff Haden was going with Mozart.
Our Winter issue featured a report on our gia store: ‘Our gia representative store for 2025 is Wicklow-based Aboretum, Kilquade!
‘The outlet was last year relaunched after a complete refurbishment and reimagining of the original garden centre and lifestyle destination store.
‘Taoiseach Simon Harris officially opened the €4.5m redeveloped outlet.
‘The state-of-the-art 2,400m² garden centre would create twenty-five new jobs, in addition to the existing twenty-five employees, giving a total team of 200 people across the business.
‘Arboretum – which is a family-owned business – operates two other garden and lifestyle centres, the flagship store in Leighlinbridge, Carlow and Urban Green, Parnell Street, Dublin.
‘The investment in Wicklow transformed the garden and retail centre into a thoroughly modern, comfortable shopping and meeting space completely covered by a glass roof.
‘The facility features indoor and outdoor plants and gardening equipment as well as health and wellness, fashion and food offerings and ‘Rachel’s Secret Garden’ café.’
In News we also learned that Retail Excellence Ireland, the representative body for
Carol works across the whole of the horticulture supply chain and is also well-known for her involvement in many high-profile events and projects – including the hugely popular Home Grown TV programme.
In Showtime we saw how Spring Fair annually hosts over 1,200 exhibitors, showcasing over a million new products across 12 unmissable buying destinations dedicated to Home, Gift, Fashion and Everyday.
the retail industry, had announced the winners of the AIB Merchant Services Retail Excellence Ireland Awards.
‘All roads headed West for the occasion as executives from the industry attended the ceremony at the Galmont Hotel in Galway.
‘Dublin-based Diamond Furniture won National Retailer of the Year and was commended by the judges for an impressive store design, a high level of attention to detail, and having an overall five-star customer experience.
‘Windyridge Garden Centre won the inaugural Independent Store of the Year Award.’
Chadwicks had also recently announced that over the past year (2024), it had created over ten new initiatives with the Irish Wheelchair Association, raising over €6,000 in the latest fundraising drive for the charity partner.
Projects had included crucial IWA residential home and retail store upgrades, as well as community centre refurbishments.
Bia
‘On The Record’ featured Carol Marks, sector manager for horticulture at Bord Bia, and a graduate of the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin.
‘The 2025 edition promises to be one of the most highly anticipated in the event’s history, featuring industry-leading brands alongside hundreds of newcomers, and heaps of exciting new theatres and activations to contribute to the celebrations of the 75th anniversary,’ we noted.
Brands were securing their spots early to take advantage of the buzz surrounding this historic event.
In The Homefront we were in Germany for our Inspiring Retail from Around the World profile.
‘After 225 years in business, the German gia winner – F.S. Kustermann, a family business in the 7th generation – is an exemplary example of a retail store that has evolved with its customers, always celebrating the joys of life and the home’, Michelle Hespe reported.
We also had news about the gia Top Window awards.
In his article Spring-Awakening Liam Kelly had some unique observations as always – along with timely advice and pointers, aimed at keeping the customer happy and the tills ringing – as we looked forward to another year in the garden, and in garden retail.
Chadwicks Group unveiled its newly revamped Wexford branch and we reported on this in our May/June issue.
Wexford GAA stars Lee Chin, Simon Donohoe, Eoin Porter and Eoghan Nolan were on hand to cut the ribbon with branch manager Enda O’Brien.
This marked another branch in Chadwicks Group’s ongoing nationwide branch upgrade programme, which began in 2018.
Chadwicks Wexford is located in Drinagh Business Park and has been serving the needs of local tradespeople and DIYers since 1979, we noted.
While the branch had been upgraded with a new look and feel, customers could expect the same level of service and dedication they had come to know and expect from the team.
The new branch had been fully refurbished and designed with the customer in mind providing builders, engineers, specialist tradespeople and DIYers with all the tools and materials they needed to get the job done in one location.
The revamped branch features a new doors, floors and bathroom showroom, with new displays showcasing the best products across paving and decking, power tools, and
Velux and Keylite roof windows.
Customers can also visit a new Paint Centre, offering paint mixing and the latest in specialised products suitable for any painting job.
The Chadwicks Wexford team are also on hand to offer customers tailored advice, with some colleagues being part of the team for over forty years.
A coffee station has also been installed, creating a hub for the community and a space for DIYers and tradespeople to meet and chat.
A key feature of the new look branch is the Chadwicks ECO Centre, a new one-stopshop for everything you need to know about sustainable building – including insulation, heat pumps and controls, solar energy and water-saving products, and ventilation systems.
Customers can also make a free appointment directly with the Chadwicks team online or in branch for advice relating to retrofitting their home through Chadwicks’ partnership with YourRetrofit.ie.
Speaking at the opening of the new look branch, Wexford hurler, Lee Chin, said: ‘It is a pleasure to join Branch Manager Enda O’Brien and the Chadwicks Wexford team
as they unveil the newly upgraded branch today.
‘Chadwicks Group is a great supporter of Wexford GAA and have made a huge difference to hurling and football in our county, so I am excited to welcome all the locals here to celebrate the reopening.
‘There is a real sense of excitement from all the long-serving colleagues to see their newly renovated branch and I am looking forward to picking up some DIY tips!’
Enda O’Brien, Chadwicks Wexford Branch Manager, said: ‘We’re excited to unveil our newly refurbished branch which has been designed with our customers in mind.
‘DIYers and tradespeople can expect an improved layout with new showrooms showcasing all the latest quality products, as well as a new ECO Centre where they can come for specialist advice about all things sustainable building.
‘The team has been serving the Wexford community since the branch opened in 1979, and we’re looking forward to welcoming all customers back to the new branch with the same best-in-class customer service they’ve enjoyed.’
A new Expo was to be added to The Inspired Home Show® 2025 we announced last summer.
The Travel Gear + Luggage Expo would be bringing together a wide selection of companies that offer products for the travel goods segment of the industry, the International Housewares Association announced.
Exhibitors
The Inspired Home Show 2025 was held March 2-4 at Chicago’s McCormick Place Complex. The Show featured more than 1,600 exhibitors in five expos throughout the
North and South buildings.
The Travel Gear + Luggage Expo was positioned in the South building and located at the top of the escalators leading into the hall from the Level 1 registration area.
This positioning gave buyers easy and direct access to this new section of the Show.
Industry adjacent
‘The buying community, including key retailers on IHA’s Retail Advisory Council, has asked that the Show broaden categories by including products that are industry adjacent,’ said Derek Miller, IHA president & CEO.
Figures from FraudSMART, the fraud awareness initiative led by Banking & Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI), showed, last summer, that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) lost almost €10m (€9.9m) through email-related fraud in 2023, including invoice-redirection and CEO impersonation scams.
The figures came as FraudSMART joined forces with the Irish SME Association (ISME) to urge SMEs to be on the alert and put measures in place to protect their business.
Majority of cases are invoice-redirection scams with what appears to be a legitimate email from a supplier known to the business
Speaking on the figures and outlining the type of scams targeted at SMEs, Niamh Davenport, Head of Financial Crime, BPFI said: ‘We have seen a jump of almost 25% (23.8%) in email-related fraud targeted at SMEs last year.
‘These scams can be devastating for a small company with average losses of €12,000.
‘The majority of cases we’ve seen are invoice-redirection scams.
‘These, often start with what appears to be a legitimate email from a supplier known to the business advising of new bank details for payment, but which has been hacked or closely copied by fraudsters.
‘This can create a false sense of security
and make it difficult for businesses to detect.
‘They usually don’t request any payment upfront but ask for the bank account details on file to be changed for future invoice payments and provide a new IBAN and BIC code for the “new account”.
‘When a legitimate invoice is issued by the supplier the business ends up paying it into the “new account” controlled by the fraudster and it’s often only some time later when a payment reminder is sent by the supplier that the scam is detected.’
Davenport added: ‘Unfortunately, while fraudsters target businesses of all sizes, SMEs can be particularly vulnerable compared to larger companies due to more limited resources, less investment in security infrastructure as well as lower financial buffers to withstand any losses.
‘Fraudsters take advantage of busy work schedules and create a sense of urgency in the hope that an employee will react without thinking and won’t take the time to do necessary checks.’
Calling on SMEs to remain vigilant, Neil McDonnell, CEO, ISME added: ‘Unfortunately, no business is immune to this type of scam and the consequences can be catastrophic.
‘I urge all SMEs and their employees to review their current payment policies and procedures.
‘I would also encourage businesses to put
Top tips to protect your business from fraud:
1. Policies and procedures – ensure a verification process is in place for requests to change supplier bank account details. Use trusted contact details already on record or a contact number on the company’s website. Do not to use the contact details on an email requesting the change as these could be fraudulent or controlled by a fraudster.
2. Dual authorisation – ensure that two people from the business are required to complete a thirdparty payment electronically.
3. Fraud awareness and training – ensure staff are given appropriate training on cyber security with a focus on email-related fraud / phishing emails.
4. Invoice checking – review invoices thoroughly and ensure there are no irregularities including misspellings and grammatical errors.
5. Updated operating systems –ensure that the latest updates for your computer and mobile operating systems are up-to-date and set them to automatically update.
training in place for employees to ensure they are constantly aware of current fraud risks and how to avoid falling victim to scammers.
‘FraudSMART provides a free guide with information and tips on business fraud and that’s a good place to start.’
Ms Davenport concluded: ‘Our single biggest piece of advice if you receive an email from a supplier asking to change their bank account details for payments, is to pick up the phone, using a number that you are familiar with or from a trusted source such as the official supplier website, and check directly with the supplier if the request is genuine and the details are correct.
‘If you suspect that your business may have fallen victim to fraud, don’t delay, talk to your bank and to Gardaí as soon as possible.’
In May/June we reported that United Hardware Limited (UHL), the national DIY and hardware group which supplies and operates the Homevalue retail brand in Ireland, had announced the reappointment of Eoin McGettigan as its Non-Executive Chairman.
‘As Non-Executive Chairman of United Hardware, which has a network of over 150 DIY, homeware, garden and builders’ merchant stores with combined annual retail sales in excess of €500m and 2,000 employees, Eoin will continue to oversee the implementation of the company’s ambitious business strategy which aims to grow the group’s nationwide footprint, strengthen its market positioning and improve operational efficiencies,’ we wrote.
‘During his first term, Eoin oversaw the completion of a long-term merger between Associated Hardware and National Hardware, switching over to a single entity trading under the United Hardware company name, which served as the name for the joint venture between both companies since 2009.
‘The new single entity structure operates as a true cooperative business with the sole focus of delivering maximum value to its 115 equal shareholding members with the majority of profits being returned to members through rebates and loyalty bonuses, and remaining profits being reinvested into the group to facilitate future growth and development.
‘Eoin McGettigan has over thirty years’ retail experience, having previously held Executive Director roles with some of Ireland’s leading companies including Musgrave, Dunnes Stores, and Lifestyle Sports. Eoin was also previously CEO of The Coop group in the UK.’
Commenting on the announcement, Paul Candon, CEO, United Hardware, said: ‘We are delighted to have secured Eoin for another term, and I look forward to working closely with him in continuing to grow and develop the United Hardware business.
‘Eoin’s contribution to date has been immense and we are deeply fortunate to have someone of his calibre and expertise
on board again to support the next phase of our journey.’
Speaking about his reappointment, Eoin McGettigan said: ‘I’m delighted to be reappointed as Non-Executive Chairman of the United Hardware Board and am very excited about supporting the business and its members in realising their shared ambitions for the future.
‘The foundations that we put in place through the merger process last year are already delivering significant operational, commercial and financial benefits to the now combined group, and we’re now in our strongest ever position to invest significantly in key pillars of growth for our members, including the Homevalue retail brand.
‘I am excited about the challenge and very positive about the future outlook for our members.’

As we entered 2025 we were delighted to announce that our gia store for this year would be the Aboretum at Kilquade in County Wicklow.
Our gia store for 2025 is Wicklow-based Aboretum, Kilquade. The latest iteration of the Arboretum offering is a complete refurbishment and reimagining of the original garden centre and lifestyle destination store and it was completed early last summer amid rave reviews from across the industry.
Then Taoiseach Simon Harris officially opened the €4.5m redeveloped outlet and Hardware & Homestyle was in attendance, naturally.
The state-of-the-art 2,400m² garden centre would create twenty-five new jobs, in addition to the existing twenty-five employees, we reported, giving a total team of 200 people across the business.
Arboretum – which is a family-owned business – operates two other garden and lifestyle centres, the flagship store in Leighlinbridge, Carlow and Urban Green, Parnell Street, Dublin.
The investment in Wicklow transformed the garden and retail centre into a thoroughly modern, comfortable shopping and meeting space completely covered by a glass roof.
The facility features indoor and outdoor plants and gardening equipment as well
as health and wellness, fashion and food offerings and ‘Rachel’s Secret Garden’ café.
The Doyle family invested heavily in sustainable technology – with a rainwater harvesting system to water plants and solar panel generated electricity for heat and light – future proofing the facility.
Simon Harris, said at the opening: ‘It’s great to see a family business go from strength to strength and it’s great to see new jobs being created.
‘The Arboretum is a special site in Wicklow and a really special place for family and friends to meet.
‘It’s also so important that children have access to as much information as possible on the natural world and the ethos of the Arboretum has always been right on point in this regard.’
Fergal Doyle, Arboretum co-owner and Chief Commercial Operator said: ‘Our investment here is a vote of confidence in our valued local community, our dedicated team and our loyal customers.
‘We are thrilled to share this state-ofthe-art facility with them and look forward to welcoming twenty-five additional staff members.
‘Our investment also reflects people’s growing passion for gardening, be it herbs on a windowsill or on a larger scale.
‘Our expanding customer base appreciates how gardening adds positively to biodiversity and sustainability, as well as their own physical and mental health.’
‘A key goal of our investment is futureproofing the facility with sustainable technology for generations to come.
‘Resource efficiency makes sense on a commercial level but it’s also part of the Arboretum ethos; we’re conscious of our responsibility to “put our money where our mouth is” by investing in green technology,’ continued Fergal.
Barry Doyle, Arboretum co-owner and CEO, said, ‘This redevelopment allows us to offer a completely immersive gardening experience to our customers and visitors.
‘As well as an extensive range of outdoor plants, shrubs and trees, our new expansive glass roofed facility will stock a wide array of indoor plants with 85% of our stock coming from Irish growers.
‘It also enables us to retail the full extent of our health and wellness, fashion and lifestyle offering.
‘But we offer more than a retail experience at Arboretum Kilquade; it’s a meeting point, somewhere to socialise with family and friends while enjoying the exhibition gardens or some lunch in Rachel’s Secret Garden café.’
Arboretum Kilquade also incorporates the 17 individually designed gardens of the National Garden Exhibition Centre, spanning six acres in total, freely accessible for visitors to walk through and enjoy.
Arboretum worked with a number of partners on the store redevelopment including international garden centre specialist Rabensteiner, building contractor Cascade Group, mechanical and electrical engineering consultancy Penston MEP and commercial energy efficiency delivery partners Vivid Edge.
Representatives from Arboretum were invited to The Inspired Home Show 2025 in Chicago. News from this event later in this issue!

1.5 million used batteries saved from landfill by students in Ireland!
TV and radio presenter Laura Woods called on schools and students across Ireland to become battery recycling champions as WEEE Ireland’s Schools Battery Recycling Competition entered its 13th year.
‘The equivalent of 1.5 million used AA batteries – the weight of almost four school buses – were saved from landfill and recycled by primary and secondary students during the last school year thanks to their overwhelming participation across Ireland,’ we heard.
Laura was joined by Roundwood National School in Wicklow to launch the year’s campaign, which also supports LauraLynn Children’s Hospice.
Roundwood National School was awarded €2,000 in sports vouchers for its commitment to sustainability along with five other schools, including three in Sligo and one in both Dublin and Roscommon, who each won in their category.
‘A huge congratulations to the winning schools whose recycling efforts not only make a significant environmental impact but also provide essential support to the children and families who depend on LauraLynn’s services,’ said Laura.
‘It’s inspiring to see so many schools engage in this important drive to rescue millions of batteries that might otherwise sit forgotten in drawers or old devices and ensure their valuable materials can be recovered for reuse.’
As we reported: ‘The WEEE Ireland’s Schools Battery Recycling Competition returns this October for a new school year and is open to all primary and secondary schools in WEEE Ireland battery recycling counties that collect at least 10 full 5kg battery boxes.
‘Last year’s competition marked a new milestone, with a record number of primary and secondary schools participating from October 2023 to March of this year.’
By actively encouraging the involvement of teachers, families, and the broader community to collect used batteries for recycling, students can ensure that valuable materials like lithium, nickel, cobalt and copper are recovered and reused, rather than lost to landfill.
‘The new European Battery Regulations, applicable from earlier this year, introduce comprehensive rules to manage the entire lifecycle of batteries within the EU,’ said Leo Donovan, CEO of WEEE Ireland.
‘Minimum material recovery targets for materials like cobalt, lithium, and nickel will apply to various battery types, ensuring valuable materials are recaptured.
‘These new targets will require increased participation in battery recycling across all sectors, so we’d urge even more to join the drive this year and make a real difference to saving materials that are increasingly in scarce supply.’
Kerry McLaverty, CEO of LauraLynn, expressed her gratitude as each battery recycled through WEEE Ireland contributes to a donation fund for LauraLynn.
‘The funds we have received from WEEE Ireland as a result of the battery campaign have had such a positive impact on the children and families who avail of LauraLynn’s care and specialised supports all across Ireland,’ she said.
‘This year’s donation brings the total fundraising to €590,575an incredible level. WEEE Ireland has been partnering with and supporting us since day one and we are grateful for their continued support as we grow our community of care and support more children and families than ever before.
‘We’d also like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took the time to recycle their batteries. It may seem like something small, but for the children and families who rely on LauraLynn, and for the environment, it is huge and very impactful.’
United Hardware, the buying and marketing group for builders’ merchants, DIY and home & garden retail stores was named as one of Ireland’s best managed companies for the first time, at the 2024 Deloitte Best Managed Companies Awards.
We noted, in our September/October issue, how this award recognises United Hardware’s commitment to superior business performance and excellence in leadership. It was presented during a gala dinner event in Dublin, alongside other ‘best managed’ businesses.
‘The award follows United Hardware’s successful merger completion, transitioning from a joint venture partnership to a single trading entity which significantly enhanced business efficiencies while opening up major opportunities to develop and amplify its national retail brand, Homevalue, along with accelerating other strategic initiatives across the Group,’ we reported.
‘As an indigenous, locally-owned business accredited by Guaranteed Irish, United Hardware operates the Homevalue retail brand for its members, who together own more than 160 stores throughout Ireland and employ around 2,000 people.
‘United Hardware serves a diverse range of trade and DIY customers in Irish communities.
‘Being selected as a Best Managed Business will further bolster United Hardware’s positioning as the market leader and validates its efforts to enhance member performance through best-in-class sourcing, buying, sales, distribution and other value-added support services,’ was the message.
Noting the significance of winning the award for the first time, Paul Candon, CEO of United Hardware, said:
‘Being named a Deloitte Best Managed Company for the first time is a huge achievement for our company and a testament to the incredible dedication shown by our entire team and work over the last number of years to complete our merger, and become a true co-operative.
‘Their resilience, hard work and commitment have enabled us to thrive in a competitive landscape, and we are truly honoured to receive this prestigious recognition on their behalf.
‘United Hardware is now a unified business, enabled by an empowered team and a collaborative culture and we’re proud that this work has been recognised as part of the Best Managed Business Awards, which will further bolster our growth ambitions.
‘I’d also like to extend our deepest thanks to our suppliers and our independent business owning members, whose partnership has played a crucial role in our success.’

Chadwicks Group’s Tour de Forks is a forklift skills showcase that puts competitors to the test with a series of fun, challenging obstacles.
The Group announced that James Kearns from Chadwicks Coolock had won its first ever competition.
Tour de Forks consists of a series of diverse challenges that puts the skills of forklift operators who work at Chadwicks, The Panelling Centre and Cork Builders Providers to the test.
After a hard-fought contest, James emerged victorious, taking home a prize of €500 for his efforts, while runner-up Gordon Parker from Chadwicks Monaghan received a prize of €250.
The first Tour de Forks was held at Chadwicks East Wall Road and the course began with a pallet pick-up and a roadway featuring a challenging corner turn.
The 16 male and female contestants then had to remove a pallet from a truck, negotiate a roundabout and accurately place it onto the racking, then reverse the procedure and bring it back to the truck, all while the time clock was ticking.
To finish the course, they needed to complete a series of zig-zag routes, which included collecting and dropping off a pallet full of footballs.
Before they reached the finishing line, the competitors picked up planks with footballs and tees, and carefully weaved through the cones once more, replacing the plank in its original position.
Any lost load or hitting of obstacles, among other broken rules, incurred a time penalty, bringing new meaning to the saying that steady – but perhaps not slow – wins the race!
With 395 licensed forklift operators across Chadwicks Group, and many colleagues trained to operate three different types of forklift vehicles, Tour de Forks was created to demonstrate the importance of health and safety in the business.
The competition brought together teams from Chadwicks, The
Panelling Centre and Cork Builders Providers, who got the chance to see several of the business’ forklift drivers show why they are masters of their craft as well as flaunt their impressive skills.
To be in with a chance to compete as one of the chosen contestants, forklift drivers across the business were invited to submit a short video demonstrating their skills and were selected by a panel of judges based on applicants adhering to a specific set of criteria.
Commenting on the competition, Patrick Atkinson, CEO, (above) said:
‘We are excited to announce the winner of our first ever Tour de Forks competition and come together to recognise the skills of forklift drivers across our businesses.
‘It was not only an impressive showcase of talent, but the competition also served as a reminder of how vital each of our 395 forklift operators are to us, and was above all, a lot of fun.
‘We all witnessed unique scenes of forklifting triumph and it was an event that we won’t forget!’
Chadwicks announced that over the past year (2024), it had created over ten new initiatives with the Irish Wheelchair Association, raising over €6,000 in the latest fundraising drive for the charity partner. Projects had included crucial IWA residential home and retail store upgrades, as well as community centre refurbishments.
Chadwicks announced that it had created over ten new initiatives with charity partner, Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA).

Projects that Chadwicks supported include:

The Coolock team also supported an IWA computer workshop, with materials provided by Chadwicks for the classes.
In addition to these initiatives, teams at all Chadwicks branches across the country supported IWA’s annual fundraising day.
Since 2021, Chadwicks has been a partner of the IWA, supplying building materials to its community centres and homes across the country.
Chadwicks’ support helps improve accessibility for visitors and tenants, while
benefitting hundreds of members, staff and IWA shop customers nationwide.
The IWA operates 59 community centres and 52 wheelchair accessible and affordable homes in Ireland, as well as provides 1.3 million hours of assisted living services to more than 2,000 adults and children.

‘Through supplying us with materials as well as their team’s expert knowledge, we have been able to continue improving accessibility for members of the community, and they have also helped us raise much needed funds for our work as well.
‘We are extremely grateful to all the Chadwicks team and want to thank them for the difference they continue to make’.

‘Strong retailer and exhibitor participation lays the foundation for enhanced connections, new products and growth in year ahead’
The industry’s premier home and housewares marketplace showcased 2,000 unique brands and 300,000 products to attendees from 115 countries at Chicago’s McCormick Place during the 125th edition of the Show.
‘Senior leaders from both the supplier and buyer sides have told us how much they appreciated the number of strong top-totop meetings they were able to have in just three days and all under one roof,’ said Derek Miller, president & CEO of the International Housewares Association (IHA), which hosts the Show.
‘These connections, along with the platform to discover so many new and innovative products, will be critical to growth in the year ahead.’

‘Even as we celebrated the 125th edition of this premier event, IHA’s focus is on the future,’ said Miller.

For more than three decades, Czech retailer and entrepreneur Pavel Stanek has been doing what he loves doing best – retailing in high-end kitchenware and creating amazing experiences and memories for his customers.
What makes this so special is that, Pavel has dedicated his life and work to provide space and products for his customers so that they can do what they love best – cook, bake, dine, socialize and create remarkable experiences and memories.
The original Potten & Pannen – Staněk store was established in central Prague as a leading, exclusive importer, distributor and direct seller of kitchenware and household brands.
Fast forward to today and the brand has 13 ‘bricks and mortar’ stores in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, three e-commerce stores and two renowned gourmet academy cooking schools.
Now the forward-thinking company also has a stunning flagship store – ATELIER – suitably housed in one of Prague’s cherished historic buildings.
This remarkable store that seems more like a high-end gallery, became one of the top five home and housewares retailers in the world at the 2024 Global Innovation Awards (gia) held by the International Housewares Association in Chicago.
‘It’s an amazing recognition that belongs to everyone involved in this project,’ said Pavel at the gia gala awards and dinner.
‘Atelier, in the Andaz hotel, is our biggest
and most luxurious store yet, featuring exclusive brands and a selection of both Czech and international design not just for the kitchen.
‘It’s a place where we tell a story about cooking and dining by appealing to all human senses.
‘Succeeding in such a vast competition is proof to me that the hard work the entire team has put into Atelier has paid off,’ he said.
The two-floor, 330 square-metre store was designed by renowned Czech designers from the Vrtiška & Žák studio, with the awe-
inspiring centerpiece being a 15-metre long solid brass table where many of the store’s products are displayed.
From the ground, punctuating the table’s surface, and carrying on up into the air and around the room, are trendils of copper rods punctuated by tiny LED lights that create a tangible sculpture representing aromas rising from a kitchen.
The gia expert jurors were blown away by the captivating sculpture, commenting that there has been ‘tremendous commitment to the centerpiece’.
They said that ‘the central display drives the store traffic and the entire experience, with the sculptural, beautiful lines in the fixtures drawing the eye to the table’.
The many pieces of art that come together to create an imaginary kitchen include a sculpture of pots and pans by kitchenware brand Mauviel, that are assembled in waves, as though caught up in a silent dance through the air.
‘Technology plays an important role in the store’s success, but it does not take centre stage.’
The entire store is softly lit to place the importance on the array of products, design and art works, such as the one-ofa-kind Liani glass chandelier designed by renowned Czech artist Maxim Velcovsky and produced by Lasvit.
‘We believe that once someone steps into the store, they will not want to leave,’ says Pavel.
‘The space resembles a gallery where you can easily spend an entire afternoon.’
The gia judges commented that Atelier
offers ‘drama at the highest level’, saying that the store is ‘simply outstanding – a textbook example of how to create a store experience that keeps people coming back.
‘The store is breaking boundaries with displays that offer excitement and “wow” moments.’
Technology plays an important role in the store’s success, but it does not take centre stage.
A digital touchscreen, free Wifi and iPads are available so that purchases can be made wherever a customer may be.
This makes technology a handy facilitator for sales, while the products and the displays remain the stars of the show.
The gia judges were in awe of Atelier as a destination and as an experience.
‘When it comes to facilitating a perfect shopping experience, Atelier nails all important parameters,’ they noted.
‘For example, there are iPads available in-store for product information and ideas, and the company uses personal emails for customer communications, further strengthening the feeling of luxury and exclusivity.’
Exclusivity has been a common thread in Pavel’s stores.
Back in 2014, he and his team launched the world’s first and only KitchenAid concept store and then released the same concept store in Slovakia later.
In 2017, Pavel and his team received a gia award for the store, and the jury was impressed with the world-first innovation of merging a kitchenware store with a cooking school.
Staff have always been a pivotal element of the company’s success. Pavel said it back in 2017, and he feels exactly the same way now:
‘Two of the most important factors in our business are our well-trained employees and their in-depth knowledge of our products,’ says Pavel.
‘They serve each of our clients with a smile, armed with complimentary tea and coffee.
‘There is regular specialized product training by brand managers and representatives from manufacturers, and often employees travel to the product manufacturers’ bases to learn about the product production process.
‘It gives them more detail in terms of unique selling points.’
Despite the undeniably exquisite nature of Atelier, the grounding philosophy from when the first store opened, is still the core of the company’s approach to retailing.
‘Our company is all about creating harmony between quality, design and excellent service,’ says Pavel.
‘Since opening our doors in 1992, we have been enabling customers to elevate cooking, dining and everything related to a state-ofthe-art-kitchen and experience.’ To learn more about Potten & Pannen - Staněk, visit www.pottenpannen.cz.

The Global DIYSummit, took place in Rome. At the conclusion of the Summit, the delegates, using the in-app voting tool, rated the event an overwhelming 67% as ‘very good’ to ‘excellent’ with a further 23% rating the event as ‘good’.
Over 1,000 delegates from fifty-five countries attended the congress, which included over 300 of the top retailers in our sector from around the world.
Organisers said the Global DIY-Summit is the most international meeting of the entire industry, which was verified through their Voting Tool.
Last year over one quarter of the audience were retailers, whilst suppliers are still the largest share among the various type of attendees: just under 60% of the delegates were manufacturers.
‘A growing number of consultants and service providers are also joining the Global DIY-Summit, with a increasing proportion made up of marketplaces, exemplifying one of the trends in the industry,’ it was noted.
‘These figures reinforce the internationality of the Global DIY-Summit and the vital role it plays in bringing the industry from around the world together in one central location.
‘It was most encouraging for us as organisers that the delegates, using
the voting tool, labelled our congress to be a world-class event,’ we were told.
The next, and 11th, Global DIY-Summit will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, from 11 to 13 June 2025.
Delegates were given the opportunity to attend a Store Tour of Rome.
In total, a record number of delegates took part in the store tour, consisting of seven buses visiting four top-quality DIY stores in Rome and its surrounding area, as well as Eataly, one of leading concepts in food retailing internationally.
Attendees of the Global DIY-Summit Store Tour visited the market leaders in Italy, Leroy Merlin and OBI.
Store Tour delegates also visited Bricofer, representing the local side of DIY retailing in Italy, as well as Tecnomat, part of the Adeo group’s portfolio, focused on pro-consumers and demonstrating impressive growth in recent years.
How to thrive in the ‘never normal’
The focal theme of the 10th Global
DIY-Summit was ‘Embracing Change in DIY – How to Thrive in the Never Normal’.
Internationally renowned speakers gave outstanding and thought-provoking presentations on Reshaping Realities.
The first half of 2024 had not been without challenge for the industry, it was noted.
‘The effects of climate change, volatility in customer demand and speed of change and paradigm shift have re-affirmed that we are experiencing a VUCA world to a degree never previously experienced, say organisers.
‘The DIY, home improvement and garden industry have to
act now to ensure its relevancy and success moving forwards – including attracting and engaging not only a new generation of consumers, but also employees and associates, who are more demanding than ever,’ was the message.
Co-Founder of the Global DIY-Summit, John W. Herbert, and Managing Director, Iñaki Maillard, took to the stage to open the programme of the Global DIY-Summit, with a focus on the desire to inspire, inform, engage and motivate delegates in the following days, as well as sharing an update on embracing diversity in the industry.
Iñaki Maillard finished by thanking the delegates and sponsors of the Global DIY-Summit – the defining factor that make the Global DIY-Summit possible.
Thierry Garnier, EDRA/GHIN President and Group CEO of Kingfisher plc, and Reinhard Wolff, President of HIMA and CEO of Wolfcraft, then took to the stage to share their thoughts and perspectives on the state of the industry.
Through personal and professional insights, Thierry and Reinhard reflected on the previous fifty years and the uncertainty that was experienced over that time.
We tend to reminisce with ‘rose-tinted glasses’, when in fact the world has experienced many challenges previously.
Thierry highlighted that ‘change is the only constant’ and shared his personal philosophy that following the compass is more important than following the map.
Delegates were captivated with the particularly dynamic session led by Ken Hughes, the world’s leading shopper and consumer behaviouralist, and Peter Hinssen, renowned keynote speaker, author and serial entrepreneur, on Reshaping Realities and their exploration of the never normal.
Ken Hughes provided an eye-opening introduction, sharing the necessity of breaking out of one’s comfort zone, and his thoughts that failure should not be seen as the opposite to success.
Ken is a firm believer that success is built on the foundations of failure and surrounds every success we can see.
Peter Hinssen shared his personal life experience through the evolution from an analogue to a digital world.
He highlighted the power of transformation, the increasing frequency of S curves of technology, and how we are more and more living in a world of unknown unknowns.
Peter summarized by sharing that in this never normal world we don’t need puzzle solvers, rather mystery solvers.
Just as the audience felt they were beginning to get a grasp on the topic, Ken and Peter delved deeper into the never normal through an insightful fireside chat, shedding new light on the practical strategies and fresh perspectives on resilience and innovation.
Katie King, Author and CEO, AI in Business, continued the future-oriented session with a focus on ethical AI in home improvement.
A highlight of the 10th Global DIY-Summit was the Gala Evening that took place in awe-inspiring surroundings underneath the artificial cloud of La Nuvola.
The second day of the 10th Global DIY-Summit featured a most informative presentation from Nick Stene, Global Head of Home & Garden at Euromonitor International.
Nick imparted his view on the importance of data analysis and the essential role it plays in customer relationships.
He also shared how to efficiently work with this data in order to avoid analysis paralysis.
Craig Webb, President at Webb Analytics, continued the programme.
Two partners from the bespoke consultancy form OC&C, Duncan Simmonds and Bob Chermin, finished the home improvement market insights session through providing an update on the DIY market from their perspective.
Paul Candon, the CEO of United Hardware, then showed his ideas of ‘Crafting Excellence’.
Chadwicks unveiled its Midleton branch after a complete refresh. Broadcaster, former Irish rugby player and Cork native Donncha O’Callaghan was on hand to officially cut the ribbon and welcome the refurbished store’s first customers, alongside Cork hurling stars Séamus Harnedy and Ciarán Joyce.
The announcement was part of Chadwicks’ ongoing nationwide branch upgrade programme.
Located on Bailick Road in Townparks, Chadwicks Midleton has been serving the needs of the local community for over fifty-five years. While visitors to the newly refurbished store could expect new and exciting additions, the fifteen-strong team of highly trained specialists remained the same, providing their expertise and product knowledge to local tradespeople and DIY enthusiasts alike.
Spring Fair 2025 ends on a high ‘after fours days of inspiration, new connections, and positive growth stories’
As the doors closed on the 75th edition of Spring Fair, the UK’s largest retail trade show for Home, Gift & Fashion, the NEC Birmingham was buzzing with energy, innovation, and meaningful connections.
Gathered
Over four days, more than 38,000 retail buyers and industry professionals gathered to discover the latest trends, meet suppliers, and be part of the ever-evolving retail landscape.
The 75-year-old show is expanding and transforming.
As the retail sector continues to adapt, Spring Fair is at the forefront, fuelling growth by creating an unparalleled retail experience that connects buyers, brands, and industry experts, we heard.
A mission for growth
With a mission to enable growth in the retail industry, Spring Fair has taken bold and creative steps to enhance its show, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of retailers and the industry.
This commitment is reflected in its rapid expansion - Spring Fair is now the fastest-growing retail show in the UK, drawing in more exhibitors, buyers, and decision-makers, and it aims to create the UK’s largest retail experience to service the industry for the next 75 years.
The 2025 show has experienced:
• 14% increase in exhibitors at Spring Fair - 180 more exhibitors this year than last year
• 18% more New exhibitors at Spring Fair - that’s 400 NEW exhibitors
• Reports indicate buyers in attendance had higher spend thresholds and bigger budgets
Soraya Gadelrab, Event Director of Spring Fair said: ‘The show’s evolution is not just about size; it’s about impact.
‘It’s not just the volume of buyers; it’s the quality and it’s the opportunities that this show delivers.
‘By listening to the industry, responding to market demands, and embracing innovation, Spring Fair is delivering more than just a trade show, it is building the ultimate retail experience.’
The last twelve months have seen many issues that have distracted and affected the consumer, and their moods and buying trends, writes Liam Kelly.
The world we live in seems to have grown both smaller and larger in equal measure, as many people distance themselves from certain fraught and contentious topics while aligning themselves with others that they see as more relatable, or perhaps just more within their own thinking and ethos.
By default, this means that retail too has had its moments of uncertainty, frustration and difficulty.
Although, the gardening and lifestyle sector has been somewhat less affected and has settled down into a more ‘normal’ –whatever that may be – position of worrying about the impact that our bizarre weather has had on the business of selling to consumers the dream of The Room Outside.
In the bigger scheme of life and the ‘real’ world, the distraction and comfort of that space is still a huge positive thing for many people.
So, apart from the whole mercenary need to make money and for garden centres to thrive and exist, the selling of plants and their related products is a good business to be in, in a soppy, and perhaps altruistic,
way.
But businesses need to be profitable, and over the last year or so we have looked at quite a number of topics here to help with
that, and with a third of the season already gone, we might take the time to look back at those pieces to see what advice can be used throughout the rest of year, but perhaps in different ways.
As mentioned, this year certainly began with weather patterns that were not conducive to gardening, with too much wind and rain and not enough sunshine.
This is to be expected in the first few months of any year, although not to this year’s extent.
But it’s certainly better to get that inclement weather in that period rather than later in the season when there are more gardeners about and that percentage effect on sales causes much more of an issue to the turnover of the garden centre or gardening department.
In an early piece from last year written about seeds and propagation lines, which can still be learned from and used for this season, we explored how to increase and add to a category that, for many, isn’t overly exciting or productive from a revenue point of view. Perhaps the most important paragraph was this one:
‘Sell to the senses; be it with plants or any other lines in store.’
Range is of huge importance when it comes to seed displays in any retail environment, as a couple of small stands – one for seeds and one for vegetables – is hardly going to incentivise or inspire any gardener.
Customers expect and deserve to see a decent selection of packets on stands when they visit any retailer who sees themselves as even remotely interested in gardening. … it has been proven that to sell anything approaching a profitable amount of seeds you need to have a ‘wall’ of stands within the store. … it certainly needs to scream ‘choice’ to the customer.
Within this paragraph the two most important words were ‘range’ and ‘choice’, and these are both words that are just as relevant to many other categories in the business.
So, it’s very much worthwhile to apply the same ethos to any lines within the store that seem to be suffering from poor sales – look at your range and see if it’s a confident display that will suit your customer, or might they be disappointed?
In a slightly quirkier piece last year, I looked at how the idea and concept of the
night garden might be a way of marketing something different and interesting to the customer, and how it was a theme that might work well for social media as well as with in-store advertising.
One of the points focussed on is relevant in general terms too:
These of course come from the plants that come into their own at night and there is a certain logic to those that are best suited for this purpose.
To be visible at night, even with supplementary lighting, the blooms need to be pale and reflecting of any available light.
Whites are most effective but cream coloured flowers or even pale pink or pale blue are also quite visible. … Scented plants such as stock or honeysuckle are at their best fragrance-wise when the sun retreats and plants such as these are an easy sell anyway.
They could be combined into a single wellmerchandised display in the garden centre or just labelled and signed within other plant categories as part of the general marketing concept.
Fragrant plants are not just relevant to a garden at night.
It’s something that is an easy sell in
general to the customer and needs to be promoted more within the plant area in any garden centre.
Sell to the senses; be it with plants or any other lines in store.
Later in the year, in a piece on promoting an autumn clean-up, the focus was certainly on the more practical and useful products within the store, but this section of the article is still relevant at this time of year:
Admittedly, these are not the most exciting sounding of products when discussed here but they are functional and necessary items for any gardener, and when combined together in a well-merchandised display the serve as a memory jogger that this is clean-up time in the garden, especially if combined with an appropriate marketing campaign.
It appeals to gardeners at every level from beginner to expert and so fits the demographic of almost every garden centric person who enters the store.
Every person who walks past the display is a potential customer for at least some of those lines, they might not need a wheelbarrow but they might need a brush, and everyone need gardening gloves.
This idea of making sure you have – almost – everything the customer may require and the need to put these products in their sight-lines is just as relevant for products we need to push at this time of year such as watering lines, tools and other garden care items.
The customer’s memory needs jogging with well-placed and merchandised ‘useful’ stock for them to pick up on their way to the checkout.
In a piece on the retailing of wild bird care products late last year I made the following point:
And of course you don’t stock just one type of peanut feeder, for example, as the ‘good, better, best’ rule of having at least three types of feeders for most lines is advisable in order to accommodate all pockets and minds.
It’s generally not advisable to stock too cheap a feeder but within most ranges supplied by bird carer suppliers there is enough of a selection to at the very least do a ‘better’ and ‘best’ choice for the customer.
This too is a concept that can obviously be applied to almost everything stocked in the garden care side of the business – space permitting of course.
Be it secateurs, gloves, sprayers, and a host of other lines the ‘better/best’ stocking rule applies.
Give the customer the option to spend more on a better quality item.
Lastly, in the latest piece published we looked at how our new bank holiday in February has brought the season back a month and how garden retailers need to react to this change.
This is certainly a boon for the retail gardening sector and it has meant that these businesses have had to change their own calendars as a reaction to what needs to be achieved in store by early February, where they have lost a month in one way but hopefully gained a lot more in revenue.
This has meant that over the past couple of years retailers have had to plan for this new, earlier start to the season having first noticed the interest and change in habit after
Since establishing Retail Services & Solutions in 2007, Liam has become one of the most effective people within the retail side of Irish horticulture.

the first year of our new bank holiday, so that now most retailers aim to have most of the new season’s stock on the floor much earlier than previously and have pulled forward delivery schedules from their suppliers in order to achieve this.
Reaction is the key point here.
When something changes in the business or the sector, regardless of the reason, the retailer must react and adjust to it as soon as possible.
It is that ability to react and evolve in business that sets good retailers apart from great ones – Roll with the changes in a profitable and positive way.
So, within this short recap we can see how there are points, ideas, and suggestions that can be applied throughout the business regardless of the department, or the lines stocked within them.
The objective is to get into the right state of mind so you are constantly asking yourself how you can apply critical retail thinking within the business.
So, for the remainder of 2025? Well, look at the successes you have had in the business and what has been learned and how that success was achieved, and apply the same ideas – with a little tweaking admittedly - to other ranges within your store.
If you do then you are on the road towards a very profitable season – weather permitting of course!
Liam
In the ever-evolving world of construction, where demands for performance and durability are constantly increasing, Tec7 has once again proven its innovative prowess.
Long-known for its versatile and reliable hybrid polymer adhesives, Tec7 has unveiled a game-changing advancement to its formula: nTec Polymer Technology.
This new generation of hybrid polymers builds upon Tec7’s established reputation while pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in adhesive technology.
With nTec Tec7, construction professionals can expect a significant leap forward in several key areas:
The new Tec7 formula boasts an impressive 15-30% improvement in adhesion strength, with a maximum tensile strength of 380kg per 10cm².
This enhanced bonding power is coupled with dramatically reduced curing times – up to 4 times faster than previous formulations.
On porous materials like wood, the adhesive reaches workable strength in just 90 minutes, while non-porous surfaces like metal are ready in 6 hours.
One of the standout features on the new Tec7 formula is its exceptional resistance to mould and bacteria.
Achieving an ISO 846 Class 0 rating, nTec technology offers the highest level of protection against microbial growth available in the sealant market.
This makes it an ideal choice for applications where hygiene and long-term integrity are paramount, such as in healthcare facilities, food processing plants, clean rooms, and highhumidity environments.
Unlike traditional adhesives that struggle in cold weather, nTec maintains its effectiveness even at temperatures as low as -10°C. At 5°C, it cures at the same rate as conventional polymers do at room temperature, making it an invaluable tool for year-round construction projects.
With an elastic recovery rate of 80-90%, nTec
can withstand greater stresses and maintain its integrity over time, even in the most demanding applications.
This resilience, combined with its top-tier mould and bacteria resistance, ensures long-lasting performance in a wide range of environments.
Tec7 continues its commitment to sustainability with nTec, offering one of the most environmentally friendly and health-conscious adhesive technologies on the market.
This focus on eco-friendliness aligns with the growing industry demand for materials that minimize environmental impact.
As construction challenges become more complex and environmental concerns more pressing, innovations like nTec Polymer Technology are set to play a crucial role in shaping the future of the industry.
With its combination of strength, speed, versatility, and unmatched resistance to mould and bacteria, nTec is poised to become an indispensable tool for construction professionals seeking cutting-edge solutions for their most demanding projects.
