PRIMARY ELECTION 2026 Key County Races Drawing Attention in Pines Contested commissioner, sheriff races headline Republican primary as early voting begins June 11 By ROTA L. KNOTT Publisher/Editor oters in Worcester County will head to the polls June 23 for Maryland’s gubernatorial primary election, with several closely watched local races expected to draw strong interest in the Ocean Pines area. Among the most closely followed contests is the Republican primary for the Worcester County Commissioner District 5 seat, which represents all of Ocean Pines. Longtime incumbent Commissioner Chip Bertino is facing challenger Joe Schanno in the Republican primary. The winner will advance to the general election to face Democrat Vicky A. Wallace.

Another high-profile local race is the Republican primary for the District 6 Worcester County Commissioner seat, which includes part of Ocean Pines. Long-time Worcester County educator and former Superintendent of Schools Lou Taylor is facing media personality and relative newcomer to the area Sherrie Clifford. Because no Democrat filed for the race, the June 23 Republican primary will effectively decide the seat. The race for Worcester County Sheriff is also expected to generate significant voter attention. Incumbent Sheriff Matt Crisafulli is challenged in the Republican primary by Jeff Buhrt, a colonel with the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

No Democratic challenger filed in the race, meaning the Republican primary winner will claim the office. County offices appearing on the primary ballot include Worcester County Commissioners, State’s Attorney, Clerk of the Circuit Court, Register of Wills, Judges of the Orphans’ Court, Sheriff and Board of Education seats for select districts. State offices on the ballot include Governor, Attorney General, Comptroller, State Senator and House of Delegates, along with Democratic and Republican Central Committee races. Federal offices on the ballot include U.S. Senator and U.S. Representative. Judicial races for Circuit
