Welcome to the Jay and Linda Grunin Center

for the Arts at Ocean County College. Season after season, we strive to offer world-class performances and cultural engagements to our community in Ocean County and beyond.

This is one of our best seasons yet, and we’re excited to have you join us! From critically acclaimed vocalists, musicians, lecturers and more, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

All of this would not be possible without the generosity of The Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation. Their generous endowment has transformed the future of arts engagement here in Ocean County, and we look forward to inviting you back each year for new experiences and cherished traditions.

A MESSAGE from the Grunins

Linda and I

have always had philanthropy in our hearts. We built our reputation as lawyers who worked hard, related to our clients’ needs and always sought to act with the highest integrity. In 2013, we established the Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation, to give back to the community that afforded us so many incredible opportunities. It is my expectation that our Foundation’s continuing philanthropic endeavors will allow Linda’s legacy to live on for years to come.

Part of our Foundation’s mission is to engage the Central Jersey Shore with all forms of the arts, covering a wide range of visual and performing endeavors. The Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts is aligned with that mission. From global artists to local arts students, including the New Jersey State Teen Arts Festival, the Center has elevated our community and brought people together from across the nation to celebrate performing and visual arts. We are also thrilled to help bring the Performing Arts Academy to the campus of Ocean County College, which will keep our arts culture thriving.

Linda always loved the arts, and our Foundation is proud to partner with OCC in connection with the Grunin Center to bring the arts to the Jersey Shore. Linda was dedicated to her community and we will carry on with her hard work, determination, and passion for helping others.

Oh Solo Wainwright: An Evening with Rufus FRIDAY, AUGUST 23, 2019

Praised by the New York Times for his “genuine originality,” Rufus Wainwright has established himself as one of the great male vocalists and songwriters of his generation. The New York-born, Montreal-raised singer songwriter has released seven studio albums, three DVDs, and three live albums, including the fantastic Grammy nominated “Rufus Does Judy at Carnegie Hall,” which captured his celebrated Judy Garland tribute performance at the London Palladium in 2007, and the album “Release The Stars” which went Gold in Canada and the U.K. Musically, Rufus has collaborated with artists including Elton John, Burt Bacharach, David Byrne, Boy George, Joni Mitchell, Pet Shop Boys and producer Mark Ronson among many others.

Rufus is currently working on a new studio pop album with LA based producer Mitchell Froom to be released in the spring of 2020. The album’s songs and production harken back to his explosive debut album that celebrates the sound and musical heritage of Los Angeles. In the fall of 2018 Wainwright embarked on a worldwide tour titled “All These Poses” celebrating the 20th anniversary of his eponymous debut album and his second album “Poses”. He is working on a number of film and musical projects.

That Golden Girls Show!

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2019

Set in that sassy Miami house in 1985, ‘That Golden Girls Show!’ is one of Off Broadway’s biggest smash hits that parodies classic Golden Girls moments with puppets! Get set for an evening of cheesecake, laughter, jazzercise, shoulder pads, sex, and the elegant art of the quick-witted put down. From Sophia’s get-richquick schemes, to Rose’s tales from St. Olaf, Blanche’s insatiable hunt for men and the Fountain of Youth, to Dorothy’s daily struggle to make sense of her life, manage her roommates and, all the while fending off a certain pesky ex-husband once and for all. Devoted fans will fondly remember our four girls from Miami, and for the first-timers, this will be a joyful introduction to the brilliance of that television series.

Savion Glover & The Ideal Ensemble FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2019

In his latest stage concert, the Tony Award- winning, tap-dancing phenomenon applies his unique sense of musicality and his incredible stage presense to familiar compositions all the way from exploratory classics by John Coltrane to original movements by Mr. Glover. While highlighting Tap as the leading instrument, Savion & The Ideal Ensemble will allow audiences the unavoidable celebratory experience through sound and abstract instrumentation.

Savion Glover made his Broadway debut at age 11 in The Tap Dance Kid (1985) before earning his first Tony nomination at age 15 for Black and Blue (1989). He worked with George Wolfe on Jelly’s Last Jam (1992) and Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk (1996), earning him a Tony Award for Best Choreography. Another Tony Award nomination followed in 2016 for Shuffle Along.

He conquered Hollywood when he appeared with Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis, Jr. in Tap, Spike Lee’s Bamboozled and the acclaimed Academy Award-winning 2006 Warner Brothers release of Happy Feet and Happy Feet 2, both choreographed by Glover. In his hometown of Newark New Jersey, Savion Glover holds the honor of being on the Board of Directors at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center where he also serves as its Dance Ambassador.

Neil Berg’s 102 Years of Broadway FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2019

102 Years of Broadway recreates the greatest moments from the finest shows of the century featuring the actual stars of shows such as The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, CATS, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Jekyll & Hyde, and more! These amazing performers light up the stage with songs from the hit shows in which they starred. Neil Berg presents brilliantly revived arrangements of Broadway classics as well as thrilling numbers from Broadway’s newest hit shows.

Graham Nash

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2019

Legendary artist Graham Nash is a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and is a GRAMMY Award winner.

Towering above virtually everything that Graham Nash has accomplished in his multi-faceted career stands the litany of songs that constitute his remarkable body of work, beginning with his contributions to the Hollies through This Path Tonight (2016), his most recent solo album.

The original union of Crosby, Stills & Nash (& Young) lasted but twenty months.

Yet their songs are embedded in our DNA, starting with Nash’s “Marrakesh Express,” and “Lady of the Island,” from the first Crosby, Stills & Nash LP (1969), and “Teach Your Children” and “Our House” on CSNY’s Déjà Vu (1970).

Nash’s solo career debuted with Songs For Beginners (1971), which included “Chicago/We Can Change the World” and “Military Madness”. In addition to his solo albums, he has performed and recorded with David Crosby. Their eponymously titled Graham Nash/David Crosby (1972), is bookended by Nash’s “Southbound Train” and “Immigration Man”.

Layer the Walls

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2019

Layer the Walls explores stories of a tenement apartment in New York City that was once home to hundreds of new immigrants. Shadow and Bunraku puppetry, along with masks bring to life the stories of Irish, Italian, and Jewish families. These compelling stories have shaped the America we know today. Appropriate for ages 7 and up.

An Evening with Cowboy Junkies THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2019 Anyone who has followed Cowboy Junkies’ three decade-long journey knows the band has always traveled its own path. In 1988, they proved that there was an audience waiting for something quiet, beautiful and reflective. The Trinity Session was like a whisper that cut through the noise -- and it was compelling. With their new album, All That Reckoning, the band once again gently shakes the listener to wake up. It also may be the most powerful album Cowboy Junkies have yet recorded.

An Evening with Cowboy Junkies will traverse the new album and three decades of their unique history.

Max Weinberg’s Jukebox FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2019

Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Drummer Max Weinberg announces a new touring concept for the intimate venue – “Max Weinberg’s Jukebox.” A truly interactive experience, Weinberg invites the audience to create in real time the set list he and his crack four piece group will play that night.

Performing songs from the glory days of rock and roll, you get to choose from a video menu of over 200 songs – everything from the Beatles to the Stones to Bruce and The E Street Band’s biggest hits – and hear the group play ‘em the way you want to hear them played! That’s right – the crowd gets to yell out their choices and Max plays them! This unique approach is fun and satisfying.

Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy Present: A Celtic Family Christmas FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2019

Join Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy, the award-winning fiddle virtuosos, in an intimate and unique Christmas album and concert series you will never forget. This year, A Celtic Family Christmas exceeds all expectations with riveting performances by this fierce fiddling duo, and their children, bringing the Cape Breton Christmas to you. Through a mix of both song and dance, they will take you on a journey of virtuosic performance, telling the story of the night before Christmas in the Leahy/ MacMaster household.

“Christmas is where this whole concept started and we are excited to be travelling as a family,” says Donnell. Vienna Boys Choir

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2019

Boys have been singing at Vienna’s Imperial Chapel since 1296. In 1498, Emperor Maximilian I (HRR) moved his court to Vienna, thus founding the “Hofmusikkapelle” (Chapel Imperial), and the Vienna Boys Choir. Over the centuries, the Viennese Court attracted musicians like Heinrich Isaac, Johann Joseph Fux, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Antonio Salieri, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Anton Bruckner; Joseph Haydn, Michael Haydn, and Franz Schubert were themselves choir boys. Until 1918, the boys sang exclusively for the imperial court. In 1924, the Choir was reestablished as a private organization.

Today, there are 100 choristers between the ages of nine and fourteen, divided into four touring groups. Each spends ten weeks of the year on tour. Between them, the choirs give around 300 concerts each year, attended by almost half a million spectators around the world. Since 1924, 2499 choristers have sung over 1000 tours in 98 different countries. The boys’ first tour of the USA took place in 1931, their first world tour in 1934-35.

Irish Christmas in America THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2019

The hugely popular Irish Christmas in America show, now in its 15th season, features top Irish music, song, and dance in an engaging performance rich in history, humor, and boundless energy. Produced by Oisín Mac Diarmada of award-winning lrish group Téada, the current tour brings back the amazing Séamus Begley, (TG4 Traditional Singer of the Year) along with the immense vocal talents of Sligo’s Niamh Farrell.

This family-friendly performance features evocatively-sung Irish ballads, lively instrumental tunes, and thrilling Irish dancing, while photographs provide a backdrop to some of the rich historical traditions. Take a memorable glimpse into the enchanting spirit of Christmas, as the finest traditional artists from Ireland bring you on a fun-filled start to the holiday season of 2019.

Cherish the Ladies: A Celtic Christmas THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2019

The Grammy Award nominated Irish-American group, Cherish The Ladies, formed in 1985 to celebrate the rise of extraordinary women in what had been a maledominated Celtic music scene. Celebrating their 35th anniversary, Cherish The Ladies has brought their timeless Irish traditions, signature blend of virtuosic instrumental talents, beautiful vocals, and stunning step dancing around the world including the White House, the Olympics, and to PBS with their television special, An Irish Homecoming, which recently received an Emmy Award.

This supergroup has been described as one of the most engaging and successful ensembles in the history of Celtic music. In their A Celtic Christmas program, the Ladies put their signature mark on classic carols such as “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Silent Night,” in arrangements that highlight the group’s unique Celtic instrumentation, beautiful harmonies, and spectacular step dancing.

Mandy Harvey

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2020

Mandy Harvey is a deaf American singer-songwriter. While a Vocal Music Education major at Colorado State University, Mandy lost her residual hearing at age eighteen due to a connective tissue disorder, and left the program. She pursued several career options, including education, but returned to music in 2008.

Mandy’s music attracts the attention of those around the world, adding to her message of hope, dream, and believe. Mandy gained recognition for appearing on America’s Got Talent, reaching the finals, and was Simon Cowell’s Golden Buzzer Winner.

Danú

THURSDAY, MARCH 12, 2020

Hailing from counties Waterford, Dublin, Donegal, and Cork, Danú is one of the leading traditional Irish ensembles of today. Their standing room only concerts throughout Ireland are true events featuring high-energy performances with a glorious mix of ancient Irish music and new repertoire.

For over two decades, Danú’s virtuosi players on flute, tin whistle, fiddle, button accordion, bouzouki, and vocals (Irish and English), have performed around the globe and recorded seven critically acclaimed albums.

Assisted Living: The Musical SATURDAY, MARCH 28, 2020

Forget everything your granny told you about Assisted Living! Assisted Living: The Musical® is a 75-minute, one-act vaudevillian revue filled with original songs. It delivers laughs from the opening scene, when the show’s host couple enters heaven, suspecting their son pulled the plug to get his hands on Dad’s vintage Corvette. They don’t seem to mind. Instead, the couple fondly remembers Pelican Roost, an active, full-service retirement community, where 70-something is the new 20-something, and they party like it’s 1969!

Two actors play eighteen different characters who sing and dance, revel and kvetch, celebrate and bloviate their way through later life. You’ll laugh out loud to songs like “Help! I’ve Fallen (For You) And I Can’t Get Up” and “Golf Cart Seduction.” Assisted Living: The Musical® is for everyone who is aging or hopes to age. You’ll see your parents, your friends, and maybe some of yourself. Don’t miss the show where the Associated Press says, “Audiences are laughing so hard, they cry!”

Louis Prima, Jr.

SATURDAY, APRIL 18, 2020 Louis Prima, Jr. and the Witnesses are bringing Prima music into the 21st century. Not content to sit on the legacy they so passionately protect, LPJ and the band are taking a page from his father’s playbook, by wailing Prima Swing like it’s 2014.

Less concerned about reliving the past than about creating a future for it, Louis Prima, Jr. and the Witnesses bring new energy and a current attitude to the masses with the wildest show this side of the 1960’s. Since their breakout performance at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival (aka Jazz Fest), #TeamPrima has performed everywhere from Seattle to Palermo, from small clubs to performing arts centers, from casino showrooms to music festivals, and from Access Hollywood Live to PBS. 8:00pm  Main Stage  $35 - $25 Subscription Eligible

The Music of Bobby Darin

SATURDAY, APRIL 25, 2020

Starring Vegas Entertainer Ron Gartner and his swingin’ band! Bobby Darin was a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and actor in film and television. He died following a heart operation in 1973 at the age of 37. It has been said that had he lived, he would have been more famous than Frank Sinatra. In this special show, Vegas entertainer Ron Gartner and his band honor the Darin legacy... singing the songs of the swingin-est guy who ever put on a tux... in a show that covers everything from Darin’s rock ‘n’ roll days to the evening at the Copa.

NYC3: Today’s Hits – Live!

SATURDAY, MAY 16, 2020

The baby boomers had the Beatles, groups like ABBA took the 70s by storm, but now it’s time for TODAY’S music to take center stage with NYC3℠! Between River and Rim: Hiking the Grand Canyon THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2019 In an effort to share the uncharted glory and to shed light on the myriad threats faced by the crown jewel of America’s National Parks, writer Kevin Fedarko joined photographer/filmmaker Pete McBride on an audacious and demanding adventure – to cut a transect, on foot, across the entire length of the Grand Canyon.

Estimated at more than 750 miles, the hike was brutal beyond his wildest expectations. Fedarko carried as much as 50 pounds of gear, equipment, and food strapped to his back and had no trail to follow, risking severe consequences with a single misstep. But even as he pushed himself to the brink of his physical and mental limits, the unrivaled beauty of the canyon and his motivation to protect it drove him onward. View From Above THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2020 Sometimes, a little distance is all you need to see things in a brand new way. For astronaut Terry Virts, his newfound perspective was from the International Space Station (ISS), where he installed the Cupola module, granting an unprecedented 360- degree view from the station. When he later became the commander of the ISS, he made good use of the Cupola, taking more photographs than any astronaut who came before him. Many of those images were later used in the National Geographic book View From Above and IMAX film A Beautiful Planet, but to hear Virts tell it, no photo can capture the perfect shade of blue from a sunrise viewed from outer space.

OCTOBER 21 – OCTOBER 25, 2019 An internationally recognized hip-hop dancer, choreographer, and teacher, Amirah Sackett explores and embodies her Muslim American identity through combining hip-hop movement and Islamic themes. She is widely known for her creation of the choreography and performance group known as, “We’re Muslim, Don’t Panic”, which reached viral video fame after being featured on POPSUGAR Celebrity, The Huffington Post, AJ+, and Upworthy. Sackett was honored to be a TEDx speaker, guest lecturer at Harvard University, and a cultural diplomat with the U.S. State Department in Bangladesh and Malaysia.

Sonnet is a four-hand piano duo from the New York metropolitan area. Originally from Korea and New York respectively, they have successfully merged their inherently different perspectives into a musical meeting of the minds. Both pianists, Mi-Won Kim and Bari Mort, received a Master of Music Degree in Piano Performance from the Juilliard School, although their paths did not cross until later. They are committed to promoting music of contemporary composers along with showcasing traditional repertoire.

Internationally recognized for his vibrant interpretations and brilliant technique, Italian pianist Federico Colli was selected in 2014 by International Piano Magazine as one of the “30 pianists under 30 who are likely to dominate the world stage in years to come.” Born in Brescia in 1988, Federico studied at the Milan Conservatory, the Imola International Piano Academy and the Salzburg Mozarteum under the guidance of Sergio Marengoni, Konstantin Bogino, Boris Petrushansky, and Pavel Gililov.

It explains some of the origins of the Chinese Lunar New Year when everyone is wearing red, giving red envelopes to children, putting up red decorations, and lighting up all the dark corners with red firecrackers to make loud noises.

Into the Woods tells the story of a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King’s Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse.
