Welcome to the Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts at Ocean County College. We are delighted that the Grunin Center provides the college with the opportunity to offer first-class artistic and cultural experiences right here in Ocean County. The Center not only helps to promote the arts in Ocean County, it also makes Ocean County College a magnet for fine and performing arts patrons far and wide.

We are truly grateful for the generous donation from The Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation, which will benefit the Ocean County community for many years to come. We also appreciate wonderful patrons like you who inspire us to offer the best in fine and performing arts. I invite you to become a subscriber! A Message from the Grunins

Linda and I have been residents of Ocean County since 1969. We built our reputation as lawyers who worked hard, related to our clients’ needs and always sought to act with the highest integrity. Over the last few years, we have devoted more and more of our attention to our philanthropic endeavors through The Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation. We see philanthropy as our opportunity to give back to a county that we are proud to call our home. Part of our Foundation’s mission is to bring world class art, both performing and visual, to our community. Linda and I are extremely excited to be partnering with OCC in connection with the Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts. Fred Barton’s “American Showstoppers” concerts with his 14-piece orchestra and today’s great Broadway performers, is devoted to the great songs of the Golden Age of Broadway – and there is no greater subject for this series than the songwriting team of Kander & Ebb. “Cabaret” and “Chicago” are the two most famous landmark Kander & Ebb shows, with the revival of the latter now the longest-running American musical in history. Fred Barton’s “American Showstoppers: An Evening of Kander & Ebb” will feature two dozen of these showstoppers, from the well-known, brassy smash hits, to the haunting ballads, to their most creative special material songs. This 1940s “live broadcast” of Frank Capra’s beloved film takes us back to the Golden Age of Radio. The WVL studio’s “On Air” sign lights up and the heartwarming holiday classic comes to life through the bygone radio formula of a few hardworking actors, live sound effects - and a listener’s imagination. Take a step back in time with the uplifting and bittersweet tale of George Bailey’s close call with death on Christmas Eve, of how important and special he is to all those around him - and what this world would have missed had he not been born. Singer and songwriter Rosanne Cash and John Leventhal’s exciting show celebrates her highly-acclaimed and three-time Grammy winning album, The River and the Thread. The River and the Thread (2014, Blue Note Records) is a collection of original songs that connect and re-connect Rosanne to the American South, the place of her birth and the home of her ancestors. Tuesday, March 23, 2017 Brian FitzGerald and Martin McCormack of the duo Switchback have been playing their brand of eclectic Celtic and Americana music for over twenty years. Switchback plays an exciting mix of mandolin, guitar, and bass. Their Celtic music is authentically Irish, at the same time, their music is modern Celtic, with songs capturing the Irish of today. But to pay attention only to the Celtic side of Switchback would be a disservice to the unique American roots music crafted by FitzGerald and McCormack. Selected by our patrons in our recent Patron Feedback Survey, The Sons of Serendip (SoS) are a musical group of four friends, who through a series of serendipitous events, came together in graduate school at Boston University and auditioned for America's Got Talent. SoS quickly became an audience favorite and won 4th place in the 2014 competition. This quartet blends vocals, piano, cello, guitar and harp for a truly memorable evening. Emel Mathlouthi

Thursday, October 13, 2016 Firebrand Tunisian singer, songwriter, guitarist, and composer Emel Mathlouthi, inheritor of the legacy of American and Arabic protest singers of the 1960’s, stands with the great divas of the Arab World. Mathlouthi gained world attention when her 2007 song “Kelmti Horra (My Word is Free)” was adopted by the Arab Spring revolutionaries on the streets of Tunis and by yearning youth around the Arab world, earning her the nickname “the voice of Tunisian Revolution.” Emel Mathlouthi is devoted to her Tunisian folk roots but deeply influenced by such Western artists as Joan Baez, Massive Attack, Bjork and her sometimecollaborator Tricky. Her gorgeous, intricate sound moves between rock,

trip-hop and electronica, all interlaced with classical Arabic tradition. Her delicate and rousing songs express love, suffering, and longing for home in a deeply confessional style that verges on sacred Sufi music and an idiom that would not be out of place in the discos of Europe or America. Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars Monday, February 13, 2017

Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars have risen like a phoenix out of the ashes of war and enflamed the passions of fans across the globe with their uplifting songs of hope, faith and joy. The band is a potent example of the redeeming power of music and the ability of the human spirit to persevere through unimaginable hardship and emerge with optimism intact. The unplugged style of their latest album, Libation, is a return in a way to the days in the refugee camps when the band had to make do with whatever instruments they could round up or make by hand, and do without amplification and electronics. The band also made a concerted effort to mine the riches of Sierra Leonean folklore, basing their songs on the highlife, maringa and palm wine styles that the band members listened to in their youth but are not heard as often today, as well as baskeda and gumbe, the Sierra Leonean relatives of reggae and soukous respectively. The Celtic Tenors have established themselves as the most successful classical crossover artists ever to emerge from Ireland. They continue to re-invent the whole tenor idiom by pioneering a new style of cool never before seen on the classical stage and by breaking the traditional stuffy tenor mold. While each of The Celtic Tenors has been influenced by the musical traditions from their own individual parts of Ireland, Daryl, James and Matthew show great flexibility in melding their voices to suit the appropriate classical, folk, Irish and pop genres. The 16-member Westminster Concert Bell Choir is composed of undergraduate and graduate students of Westminster Choir College of Rider University, conducted by Kathleen Ebling Shaw. Celebrating the 38th year of the handbell curriculum, Westminster Choir College was the first institution in the world to develop such a program. The Choir has performed at Carnegie Hall twice during the Christmas season and was featured on New Jersey Network’s State Of The Arts program. Straighten Up and Fly Right – The Nat King Cole Tribute featuring Ramsey Lewis and John Pizzarelli Sunday, October 16, 2016

Nat King Cole broke the pop barrier with his smoky, smooth vocals, stringing along a huge number of solid hits right after his first “Straighten Up And Fly Right” soared up the charts in 1943. As a singer, he was called “the best friend a song ever had,” but he was essentially a jazz performer at heart. Even those later tracks crafted for the pop charts belie a piano technique, vocal phrasings, and on-the-mark orchestration that are indebted to his early roots in jazz. Ramsey Lewis and John Pizzarelli have tailored a tribute to the titan of fifties vocal pop, from his hits along with those singular tracks of sophisticated cool jazz that have influenced their own. Bucky’s Back and Better Than Ever!

Inspired, at some distance, by Molière’s Les Fourberies de Scapin, this ‘comic madness’ is set in present-day Naples. Ottavio’s and Leandro’s fathers are away, leaving their sons in the care of guardians - Scapino and Sylvestro. Ottavio marries Giacinta and when he learns that his father plans to ‘marry him off’ he seeks Scapino’s help. The spirit of the play is evident at the outset, when a slapstick sequence is accompanied by a crazy song made up from the menu at an Italian restaurant. A Holiday Spectacular

A Salute to Broadway

Join the OCC Concert Band as they present holiday music that is bold, brash, and brassy in A Holiday Spectacular. The songs are traditional, but the arrangements are fresh. From Handle’s “Messiah,” to Anderson’s “Christmas Festival,” and Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You’” there won’t be a dull moment as we celebrate the season. Directed by Tony Tafrow.

There is nothing better than a Broadway Show, except hearing the music from 12 shows in one night! John Philips Sousa – America’s Band Master traveled the US presenting concerts with great popular appeal. Borrowing a page from the Maestro’s book, the GSP will present a Sunday afternoon concert worthy of the “Village Green”.
