Lockdown has been a long few months, and we’ve likely never spent so much time at home as we have while it’s lasted, but has it made us more appreciative of where we live, or have we become sick of the same old places, while we were unable to go further afield? Unclutterer.com, the website for home and office organization, surveyed 3,500 people to find out. It seems that walking down the same streets every day, visiting the same local stores, or strolling around the same local park, has made a few of us fed up. The survey revealed that over a third of Marylanders (38 percent) admit we’ve got bored of where we live, and want to move somewhere else. What has become clear to many Americans since the start of the pandemic is that a lack of space, such as access to a garden, has been hard to live with, and many have been reassessing priorities going forward. The survey also revealed that 44 percent of city dwellers in the Old Line State now want to move out to the suburbs, or the country. Indeed, further out from the city, you’re more likely to get more for your money, in terms of house size, as well as outdoor space, and with more of us now able to work remotely, it makes more sense. In fact, it has been reported that home searches in suburban zip codes have already increased. And it’s not just about wanting that extra outside room to breathe or relax for ourselves or our family; more than three-quarters of pet own-
ers say the experience of lockdown would definitely encourage them to look for a more pet-friendly home, where their furry friends could run around without having to be taken for a walk so often. However, there is also a saying: “Don’t move, improve,” and for those who are content to stay where they are, almost 1 in 5 homeowners have realized that lockdown has made them want to extend their home in some way. Forty-six percent said they attempted other DIY projects around the house during lockdown. In general, 39 percent of respondents say if they decide to move homes now, the biggest priority would be more outdoor space. This was followed by nearly a third (30 percent) saying their biggest need would be for high speed broadband essential when you consider how many people are working from home due to the pandemic. Twenty percent of people would want a larger kitchen, and 11 percent say their priority would be a study to work in during the day. Nearly 1 in 5 (16 percent) said they did some virtual house hunting during lockdown. “The pandemic has made a lot of us look at things differently,’ said Alexander Brown of Unclutterer.com. Moving home is a big undertaking but worth it for the benefits you get if you choose more space and a more relaxed pace of life,” Brown said. “Packing up a household can be hard, but it’s a good opportunity to get rid of all the things you don’t need any more, and organizing your new space.”

In buying a home, be aware of wire fraud, cyber scams Phishing, hacking, wire fraud — these are all ways people attempt to steal from others online. As real estate searches and transactions move more and more online, the chances of being caught up in a cyber scam have become even greater. By now most people have heard of the Nigerian prince scams or phishing emails asking for social security or banking information, but many people don’t know that they need to watch out for possible scams when buying or selling their home. Cybercrimes have become increasingly sophisticated over the years and the people perpetrating them focus on situations where a lot of money is changing hands, making real estate transactions an ideal target. The National Association of Realtors recently warned its members and consumers about one example, a wiring scam during the closing stage of the home buying and selling process. Hackers will break into the email accounts of consumers and real estate professionals to get details about a real estate transaction. The hacker will then send an email pretending to be the buyer, seller, real estate agent or someone else involved in the clos-
ing process and say there has been a last minute change and provide new wiring instructions. The instructions send the closing costs funds directly into the hacker’s bank account. While it may seem like there are hundreds of ways for a criminal to take advantage of a consumer online, there are just as many ways consumers can protect themselves. Here are a few tips from the Coastal Association of Realtors to help home buyers and sellers recognize and avoid real estate scams: Do not send sensitive information via email. Do not send banking information, your social security number or anything else that could be used to comprise your identity over email. If you absolutely must send personal or sensitive information via email, only use encrypted email. Do not click on unverified email. If you do not recognize the name or email address of the sender, do not open the email. And beware of any attachments or downloadable files from unknown email addresses. Do not use unsecured Wi-Fi. It may seem harmless to check banking information with free Wi-Fi at the coffee shop, but using an open connection can leave you vulnerable.
