Sunset Park’s free events make Thursdays special

Sunset Park is a downtown Ocean City hidden gem.

Located on the bay at S. Division Street and S. Philadelphia Avenue, the park sits at the original location of the railroad bridge that crossed the bay from West Ocean City.

The storm of 1933 destroyed the bridge, but Sunset Park was designed to reflect railroad-style features — the bricks that line the perimeter are from the original train station.

Featuring a lighted stage, restrooms and a short pier that provides outstanding views of the bay, it’s no wonder Sunset Park is becoming increasingly popular as a venue for weddings and other special occasions.

Sunset Park is home to a variety of special events throughout the year. Every Thursday evening at 7 p.m. throughout July and August, the Ocean City Development Corporation (OCDC) and the Town of Ocean City host the Sunset Park Party Nights concert series.

These are free and family-friendly events that resort residents and visitors enjoy, not just because of the entertainment, but also because of the park’s amazing sunset backdrop.

The Ocean City Recreation Boosters sell beverages, including beer and wine, at these weekly events, with proceeds going toward youth programs.

Also on the schedule is the Ocean City Museum Society’s eighth annual Children’s Day on the Bay on Sunday, Aug. 5, from noon to 3 p.m.

Head Brewer Mathew Shockley and Manager/ Assistant Brewer Natthhan T Toodd brew on a daily basis and aarre constantly experimenting with new ffllavors and styles.

Backshore has six beers on taapp tthhat are always changing.

Whatever your taste in beer, you will ffiind one to call your ffaavorite. Styles range ffrrom complex, to rare, to mild summer ales used as “gateway” ffllavors to lure the masses into tthhe crafftt beer world. There’s also a nitro line that hosts beers inffuused with cofffeee or seasonally aged in bourbon baarrrels. Samples of all six crafftt beers aarre served in skateboaarrd ffllights that come in vaarrious colors ffoor sipping the awaarrd- winning beers that have made Backshore a crafftt beer destination.

In addition to tthhe everchanging six taapps of crafftt beer, Backshore has also started doing monthly small batch 32oz Crowler releases of a 8% Fruity Saison called “Pulped & Pressed.” Each release is ffllavored difffeerently with

Life-Saving Station will host 8th Children’s Day on the Bay The Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum will host its eighth annual Children’s Day on the Bay Festival on Sunday, Aug. 5, from noon to 3 p.m.

This free, family-friendly event takes place on the bay at Sunset Park in Ocean City. Families will get to experience live animals, games, crafts, live music and enjoy pizza provided

by Dough Roller.

The Salisbury Zoo and Maryland State Parks will be there with live exotic and native animals. Chincoteague Bay Field Station, Ocean City Surf Club, Furnace Town, Maryland Coastal Bays, Ward Museum, Indian River Life-Saving Station, Ocean City Library, Ocean City Recreation and Parks, Rackliffe House and the Art League will be on the scene with demonstrations,

crafts, and games to engage kids of all ages. Throughout the day the Ocean City Police Department will be out and about with its horses.

Whether you find yourself, playing colonial games with Rackliffe House, creating a piece of art with the Art League or taking a closer look at a great horned owl, you and your family will learn all about the many local educational organizations that Delmarva has to offer.

Annual plein air painting event puts artists from all over region to fine arts test

The Art League of Ocean City invites the public to view art being created on the spot during the 13th annual plein air event — “Artists Paint OC” — Aug. 8-12. The public is also invited to view and collect the art during the Wet Paint Sale on Saturday, Aug. 11 at the Ocean City Center for the Arts, 94th Street, bayside.

“En plein air” is a French expression that means “in the open air,” used to describe the art of painting outdoors. Plein air events take place wherever the scenery is inspirational, artists congregate to paint it, and watchers gather to see the painters make art right before their eyes.

Baltimore Magazine listed “Artists Paint OC” in its “50 Reasons Why We Love Our Beach.”

The annual event brings in 50 plein air painters and features many popular regional artists as well as painters from around the country.

Artists will paint Wednesday through Saturday at picturesque spots around the resort. The Art League’s Facebook page will list some locations.

On Saturday, Aug. 11, the artists will bring their best work to the Ocean City Center for the Arts to be judged and participate in the Wet Paint Sale that evening.

The Wet Paint Sale from 6-8 p.m. is free and open to the public — in 2017 drawing a crowd of more than 300 — and an opportunity to collect original artwork of local scenes at affordable prices.

The Wet Paint Sale continues at the Arts Center on Sunday, Aug. 13 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sunday morning’s Quick Draw Contest wraps up the event. Artists will gather in downtown Ocean City and paint against the clock from 9-11 a.m. At 11 a.m. they will return to the Boardwalk at South Division Street where their work will be judged and winners announced.

The public may purchase the art off-the-easel until 1 p.m.

The Ocean City Development Corp. sponsors the Quick Draw Contest.

The plein air artwork will be on exhibit at the Ocean City Center for the Arts through the end of August.

Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan believes many visitors are surprised to learn the resort has a vibrant and active arts community, and the annual plein air event reinforces that awareness.

“I cannot think of a more picturesque setting than the scenic views of Ocean City to inspire their creativity,” Meehan said. “I look forward to watch-

ing these events grow as our residents and visitors realize that art is alive in Ocean City.”

8 Somerset Street — First facade project.

Facade program changes face of resort’s downtown What began 15 years ago as a demonstration program for downtown Ocean City has turned into the Ocean City Development Corporation’s (OCDC’s) most significant and eye catching program.

Working on one building at a time with property owners and businesses, a total of 205 buildings have been completed by the OCDC to date under the facade program; more than 15 of these buildings were completed in the past year.

Over $6 million of private investment have occurred into these older buildings. Over 700 construction jobs have been created through this program.

Several other building makeovers are currently underway and funding is still available for several more. For each dollar of public funds, the private sector is investing six dollars into this facade program.

The OCDC Facade Improvement Program provides financial assistance to downtown businesses and property owners looking to renovate the exterior portions of their buildings. The program is funded through grant money from the Maryland Department of Housing & Community Development.

The OCDC reimburses approved applicants up to one-third the cost of eligible improvements, but not to exceed $7,500. Eligible improvements include new siding, porches, landscaping, and other items. The intent

is to improve the appearance of single downtown buildings. Buildings must be at least 25 years old and must be located in the OCDC’s targeted downtown area which is generally between the Inlet and 17th Street.

In 2011, the 100th facade project was completed at the Buckingham Hotel at 1405 Baltimore Avenue. Improvements consisted of new fiber cement siding, paint, windows, doors, porch, and landscaping. This building was constructed in 1950.

Just completed in May 2018 is the 200th facade project at 601 Baltimore Avenue. This project included extensive improvements including new siding, porch railings and columns, and windows and doors.

This residential property was constructed in 1936 and is known as the Sanford-Johnson House.

Each of these facade program projects improves the appearance of downtown area, provides employment opportunities, and increases the local tax base.
