Ocean City's August adventures await
Discover fun, food, shopping, events and entertainment in downtown OC
Experience the magic of peak season in Downtown Ocean City, where endless fun, incredible food, exciting events, and unforgettable memories await.
August in Downtown Ocean City pulses with an energy that's absolutely contagious. While summer naturally brings crowds to any beach destination, there's something special about this month that transforms our charming seaside town into the ultimate vacation playground. Between the sunsoaked beaches, the iconic Boardwalk, and an
incredible lineup of events, August offers visitors an experience that's both thrilling and quintessentially Ocean City.
Ocean City has become well known for hosting sports fishing tournaments, like the Heels and Reels Tournament, Marlins for Mason, the Poor Girls Open, and the Mid-Atlantic Tournament, all of which take place this month. However, we would be missing the “granddaddy” of all fishing tournaments if we didn’t mention the White Marlin Open.
The White Marlin Open transforms Ocean City into the epicenter of the sport fishing world each August, with the 2025 tournament scheduled for August 4-8. This legendary deep-sea fishing tour-
nament has awarded over $113 million in prize money since its inception in 1974, when it began with just 57 boats and 150 anglers competing for $20,000 in prizes. Now, it’s the "World's Largest Billfishing Tournament" and draws international attention. Last year, 318 boats and over 3,000 contestants competed for $8.59 million in prize money, and 2025 is expected to be even larger with over $10 million on the line. The event celebrates its 52nd anniversary this year, and spectators will line the docks at Harbour Island Marina to witness the daily weigh-ins of white and blue marlin, swordfish, tuna, wahoo, and mahi mahi. Downtown OC has something for everyone
The explosive growth of the While Marlin Open created a new festival in 2021 at the inlet parking lot and beach. Marlin Fest offers live music, food and drinks, shopping, and live streaming of the White Marlin Open weigh-ins. This festival brings the excitement of the fishing tournament to a comfortable, family-friendly location with a stunning view of the ocean and a first look at fish flags rippling in the wind as boats return to dock. Marlin Fest runs from 11 AM to 9 p.m. every day of the tournament, and admission to the festival grounds is free.
Marlin Fest isn’t the only free event happening in Downtown Ocean City this month. Because we believe that great memories shouldn't come with hefty price tags, we've packed August with fantastic free events that bring families together:

While events are exciting and fun, Ocean City's crown jewel remains its stunning coastline—miles of pristine, well-maintained beaches that are always free to enjoy. Whether you're looking to catch some waves, build sandcastles, take a romantic stroll, or simply soak up the sun, our beaches provide the perfect backdrop for your summer story.
Don't miss the unique beach bonfire program, where families can gather around crackling fires as the sun sets.

Grab some marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers for a night of smores, or roast hot dogs over the open fire. Permits are required, and all the details can be found at ocbonfires.com.
When you’ve had your fill of sand and surf, you can hit the boards for even more action. Stretching nearly three miles along the coastline, Ocean City's world-famous Boardwalk is an attraction unto itself. This wooden wonderland hosts an incredible array of experiences: thrilling rides at Jolly Roger's at the Pier and Trimper Rides, fascinating exhibits at the Life-Saving Station Museum, authentic local surf shops, and classic arcades where games are meant to be played with friends. Stop by the Boardwalk Information Cottage between N. Division and Caroline Streets for insider recommendations.
Ocean City's food scene is legendary, offering everything from nostalgic Boardwalk treats like hand-spun caramel corn and saltwater taffy to sophisticated seafood restaurants with breathtaking waterfront views. Whether you're craving a slice of classic boardwalk pizza or a gourmet dining experience, our diverse culinary landscape has something to satisfy every palate.
When the sun sets, Downtown Ocean City's vibrant nightlife comes alive. From the locals' favorite spots on Wicomico Street to scenic bayside dock
bars where signature cocktails are served alongside stunning sunset views, there's no shortage of places to unwind and enjoy live entertainment.
For those seeking more active pursuits, Ocean City delivers in spades. The bayside offers jet ski rentals, pontoon boat excursions, and ocean-going powerboat tours. The newly renovated Bayside Park on 3rd Street features the country's oldest municipal skate park— the Ocean Bowl Skate Park—alongside tennis and pickleball courts, basketball courts, and a playground for younger visitors.
Charter fishing enthusiasts can book a boat and head out for the day in search of tuna, marlin, or other prized catches. Multiple bicycle rental businesses make it easy to explore downtown on two wheels, while playgrounds at N. Division Street and Bayside Park provide perfect spots for families to gather.
Whether this is your first visit to Downtown Ocean City or you're a seasoned veteran returning for another incredible summer, August offers an unparalleled combination of excitement, relaxation, and pure fun. Come for the beaches, stay for the magic, and leave with memories that will last a lifetime. Ocean City in August isn't just a destination; it's an experience that captures the very essence of summer at its finest.

Artists Paint OC Festival will observe its 20th anniversary
What started as a simple dream among Art League of Ocean City members twenty years ago has blossomed into one of the shore's most beloved cultural traditions. This August, the Artists Paint OC Festival marks its 20th anniversary with a special celebration that promises to be bigger and more vibrant than ever.
Picture this: 50 talented artists scattered throughout Ocean City, easels set up along the bay, on the beach, and throughout our charming streets, each one racing to capture the ever-changing light and mood of our coastal paradise. It's plein air painting at its finest—a tradition that traces back to the French Impressionists who coined the term "en plein air," meaning "in the open air."
The heart of the festival beats strongest during the "wet paint sales" at the Ocean City Center for the Arts on 94th Street bayside. Here's where the magic happens: more than 200 original paintings will be available for purchase directly from the artists. These aren't reproductions or prints—these are one-of-a-kind pieces that capture Ocean City in all its summer glory. Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 16th from 5 to 7 p.m. and Sunday, August 17th from 1 to 3 p.m. Admission is free, and the Arts Center will be buzzing with live music, complimentary refreshments, and that infectious energy that comes from artists and art lovers gathering in one place.
"Fifty artists will be capturing a moment in time on canvas," explained Rina Thaler, president of the Art League. "This is your opportunity—one that only happens once a year—to purchase these beautiful paintings of iconic local scenes that are hot off the easel."
Want to watch the artistic process unfold? Head to the Boardwalk on Sunday morning, August 17th, from 9 to 11 AM for the Quick Paint competition. This exciting event, sponsored by the Ocean City Development Corporation, brings artists together near S. Division Street and the Boardwalk for a thrilling paint-off against the clock. There's something mesmerizing about watching artists work under pressure, their brushes dancing across canvases as they race to capture the morning light on the ocean or the bustling energy of the Boardwalk. After the competition, these fresh creations head straight to the Arts Center for judging, and the public can purchase them from 1 to 3 p.m.—talk about art hot off the easel!
New for 2025 is "The Art of Ocean City" commemorative poster, celebrating both the festival's 20-year milestone and Ocean City's impressive 150th anniversary. This isn't just any poster—it's a carefully curated collection of eight iconic Ocean City

scenes, each painted by award-winning festival artists over the years.
The 18x24-inch posters come in two editions. The unframed version at $15 fits perfectly in standard frames, making it an affordable way to bring a piece of Ocean City's artistic heritage home. For serious collectors, the deluxe framed edition features a commemorative gold seal reading "Ocean City Maryland 18752025" and is limited to just 150 numbered prints. This special edition is available as a gift for anyone making a $150 tax-deductible donation to the nonprofit Art League of Ocean City.
“Whether you’re a summer resident looking for art for your condo or a local who loves the Town of Ocean City and its storied history, this is a poster you’ll want to collect,” Thaler said.
You can find these collectors' items at the Ocean City Center for the Arts, online at OCart.org, or by calling 410524-9433. They're also available around town at the Ocean City Lifesaving Station Museum, the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce, and the Residence Inn by Marriott.
For the third year running, "Kids Paint OC" showcases the impressive talents of young artists ages 6-17. These budding creators spent July painting outdoors, and their work will be on display Sunday, August 17th, from 12 to 3 p.m. at the Arts Center. Cash prizes will be awarded,

The new free Art League app even includes a locator map showing where artists are painting around the area— perfect for creating your own selfguided art tour.
