Stephen Decatur junior Zachary Fuchsluger was the school’s lone representative at the 3A indoor track state championship on Feb. 18 at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover. Fuchsluger competed in the high jump in his state meet debut. Stephen Decatur senior Drew Haueisen scored his 1,000th career point on Feb. 14 during the game against James M. Bennett in Berlin. He had 13 points in the basketball game, which Decatur won, 73-66. He finished his high school career with 1,169 points. He was named Bayside Conference South Player of the Year. Haueisen scored 572 points to lead the team during the winter season. STUCK AT SEA Ed and Dottie Pinto spent 24 days stuck at sea on the Norwegian Jewel cruise ship, after the covid19 pandemic prompted multiple countries to close their borders to the vessel. The Pintos journey began when they boarded the cruise ship for a journey across the South Pacific on Feb. 28, from Sydney, Australia. The couple finally made it back to their Ocean City condominium on March 25.

A memorial procession honoring Sgt. Charles “Chip” Green of the Ocean City Police Department was held on the Boardwalk in May. Green passed away on May 6, at the age of 47. Regain reason Much has been said about the year past, none of it good and none of it novel enough to bear repeating. It’s enough to say it is over, chronologically speaking, anyway, since we’ll be dealing with its reverberations for many more months to come. Calls for better covid-19 responses, better safety nets for the poor and unemployed, better stimuli for the economy, better policing and racial justice will continue to ring in our ears well into 2021. Similarly, the divisiveness fostered by the political extremes, populist posturing, political one-upmanship, and the insistence on loyalty over principal and reason will also carry over and threaten to derail the attempts to respond to these calls for corrective measures. What a mess we have on our hands. With some 340,000 deaths attributed to the covid crisis, with at least another 60,000 forecast by the end of this month, we can’t even agree on whether the coronavirus is real, much less how we should react to it. Regardless of the subject being debated, the arguments are advanced in the shrillest of over-simplified terms for consumption by a public audience whose members tend to believe whatever supports their own inclinations. You say handing out $2,000 checks in stimulus money to millions of people is too much? Then shame on you, you heartless elitist, who doesn’t care if people have enough to eat … even though that won’t be the case. Revamping the police bill of rights in the Maryland General Assembly this session is not a terrible idea? Fine, don’t call us when felons are running loose in the streets and burning down your houses … even though that’s highly doubtful. A mandatory mask-wearing rule is a violation of your rights? Oh, then that must supercede our rights, which include not being coughed on by you. It was often said in the past year that we need to look out for each other, and we are apparently willing to do that as long as we come first and the others do what we want. The year 2020 was a disaster, but if we don’t turn down the volume, regain our sense of reason and do a little more thinking for ourselves instead of listening to the screamers, 2021 isn’t going to be much of a charmer either.

A year to dismember
After spending seven months developing a symbiotic relationship with my desk chair in the dark shadows of what is laughingly referred to as my home office, it occurred to me that 2020 did not completely suck. True, it did deliver more crapola than a junk bond By salesman Stewart driving a maDobson nure spreader on a beanfield in spring, but it did have its redeeming qualities, such as: 1. Luckily, we were not deserted by gravity and sent flying off into space, which is always a plus. 2. It did not rain frogs, even though the Weather Channel has names for such frogstorms should they occur. 3. Because of the shortened baseball season, the Orioles were only half as bad as they were the year before. 4. Leading thinkers of our time have finally agreed that the moment has arrived for a national discussion of a possible connection between 5G connectivity and the rise of the Lizard People.
5. And finally, despite being flooded by gallons and gallons of rain last year, not one Kraken so much as poked its head out of the storm drain in front of my house (thanks Public Works for keeping the drainage system free of monster squid and whatnot). Beyond that, everything went wrong. It wasn’t just the galloping covids either, as baseball fans will recall the stubborn tarp that refused to be unrolled during a shower in the sixth inning of an early August Nationals-Orioles game. No matter which way the field crew pushed or pulled, the tarp rolled itself up in the opposite direction. My guess is that either the tarp was possessed by a Triple A call-up demon, or the members of the field crew were trying so hard that they ripped a hole in the fabric of time and pushed right by their past selves going in the other direction. I prefer the latter theory, as that also would explain how a one-day election can go on for a month-and-a-half. And let’s not forget the toilet paper crisis that threatened to leave us all hanging out to dry. Among other things, it caused me to buy, at $9 a roll, a 10-pack of novelty potty
paper on which is printed in pink, “I Love You From Top to Bottom.” Staff members refused to use it, perhaps out of fear of a possible ink transfer. One other thought did occur to me during my exile: we might feel differently about wearing masks if viruses were the size of chickadees. Although a sneeze or cough releases thousands of particles into the air, it’s easy not to take notice, because these things are invisible and therefore not alarming. But were an “achoo” to be followed by 20,000 chickadees shooting out of your nose, well, that might draw some attention. Amazingly, chickadees flying out of one orifice or another is one of the very few things that did not occur during a year that was … how should I put it? … a category 10 poopnado. But it’s over now, and when things clear up in 2021, we should have a ceremonial calendar-burning bonfire on the beach. If we can do that in early March, I’ll be finished with all the dental work I’ll be getting after cracking a tooth on, yes, Christmas day. How did that happen? Beats me, although it was still 2020 after all.

Worcester County Public Schools Facilities Planner Joe Price shared that the construction of the 9,600-square-foot Showell Elementary replacement school off Route 589 is almost done, during the Worcester County Board of Education meeting on July 14. At the time of the report, the construction team was completing the road and parking asphalt paving, site sign and final grading and topsoil placement. The construction of the new facility remained on schedule despite the coronavirus pandemic. The 9,600-square-foot building will eliminate the need for nine portable classrooms that were utilized at the former 5,200-square-foot school.

Snow Hill is officially the owner of the Black Eyed Susan, a 111-foot paddle wheel boat. Gary Weber, Snow Hill town manager, said the final cost for the used vessel was $324,900, and that new boats run up to $4 million. The largest white marlin to come to the Harbour Island scale during the 47th annual White Marlin Open in August was a 97-pounder, caught by Brandon Golueke aboard Canyon Blues. The team won $1.8 million. A total of 433 boats entered this year, the second-highest participation in tournament history. A record $6.8 million was distributed among tournament winners. It breaks the record set in 2019 by over $600,000.

The "Artists Paint OC" Plein Air Event featured artists painting around Ocean City and the surrounding area for five days. Rajendra KC of Falls Church, Virginia, won first place in the Quick Draw competition on Aug. 16 for his watercolor of a Boardwalk scene. He created the painting in less than two hours in the rain.
