There’s something for every Tiger in this weekend’s diverse programming. Get a taste of your student’s college life, or relive your own experience, by participating in one of our Student for a Day sessions, curated and led by Oxy faculty.

Celebrate the historic success of The Oxy Campaign For Good on a choose-your-own-adventure tour across campus, experiencing the wonderful ways the Campaign has already impacted Oxy. Hear President Harry J. Elam, Jr. speak about the Occidental Promise, his collaborative vision for the future of the College through 2030. Chill out on the Quad Saturday afternoon at Oswald’s Homecoming Celebration, featuring a student spirit parade. Enjoy the vocal stylings of our worldfamous Glee Club at their annual Homecoming concert and, if you’ve brought the little ones, Occidental Children’s Theater is a sure hit for the young (and the young at heart). Cheer on Tiger athletes at multiple Homecoming competitions. And so much more.

Student for a Day – The Federal Reserve, Inflation, and Monetary Policy Join Economics Associate Professor Andrew Jalil for a fascinating lecture on the federal reserve, inflation, and monetary policy. What accounts for the recent policy decisions of the Federal Reserve? What are the likely effects of these policy actions? This session describes the research methods economists use to study monetary policy, with a focus on the economic outlook today. This event is part of The Oxy Experience For Good (see page 11).

OXY ARTS – The Iridescence of Knowing Open House OXY ARTS, 4757 York Boulevard Visit OXY ARTS for a walkthrough of our fall 2023 exhibition, The Iridescence of Knowing, which explores the rich lineage of Indigenous cultural production in Tovaangar, known today as the greater Los Angeles basin. The exhibition brings together a collection of works from diverse artists from multiple generations and varied First Peoples communities of Southern California. The works challenge conventional boundaries between "craft" and "fine art,” uplifting intergenerational transmission of culture, the significance of lineage, and the profound connections between cultural tradition and contemporary artistic practices. You’re invited to tour the exhibition with OXY ARTS staff and learn more about our ongoing exhibitions and community based work at the gallery. This event is part of The Oxy Experience For Good (see page 11).

Student for a Day – AI and Pedagogy: How AI Tools are Impacting Teaching at Oxy Third Floor, Academic Commons Join an esteemed panel of faculty and staff members as they share their current thinking about artificial intelligence tools and approaches to using and avoiding them, both generally in higher education and specifically at Oxy. Panelists include Carmel Levitan, professor of Cognitive Science and director of the Center for Teaching Excellence; Julie Prebel, associate professor of American Studies and director of Writing Center & Programs; Carolyn Brighouse, associate dean for student academic affairs and professor of Cognitive Science and Philosophy; Kathleen Makarewicz, science librarian; and Eli Chartkoff, academic technology librarian. But, what does the journey look like after graduation? Join Media Arts & Culture Professor Broderick Fox as he interviews an esteemed panel of alumni, Sam Bergen ’04, Caitrin Rogers ’04, and Meko Winbush ’03, who have led successful careers in the entertainment industry.

Oswald’s Homecoming Celebration and Spirit Parade Academic Quad Everyone’s favorite tiger, Oswald, invites you to a joyful Homecoming celebration on the Quad, featuring a Spirit Parade, music, and a variety of games and activities such as face painting, henna tattoos, a caricature artist, a photo booth, as well as a bounce house and an inflatable obstacle course! Enjoy a no-host lunch with delicious cuisine from local food trucks. For those 21 and older, the Tiger Tavern* beer and wine garden will also be open. Food trucks and Tavern open 12 - 2; some other activities open longer.

The Oxy Campaign For Good The Oxy Campaign For Good, Occidental’s most successful comprehensive fundraising campaign, came to a record-breaking close on June 30, 2023. The Campaign raised more than $252 million for student scholarships, academic excellence, campus improvements and the overall student experience. More than 15,000 members of the Occidental community came together to support the four pillars of the campaign: Access, Distinction, Campus and Today.

Highlights include: •

$97 million raised to endow scholarships, internships and research opportunities.

•

$54 million raised to endow professorships and to fuel the continued evolution of academic and co-curricular programs.

•

New immersive student experiences, including the Barack Obama Scholars Program and the Immigration and Social Justice summer internship.

•

Seven new endowed professorships and directorships, including in the recently established Black Studies and Computer Science departments.

•

A revitalized athletics complex, anchored by the De Mandel Aquatics Center, McKinnon Family Tennis Center and Robinson Family Terrace.

•

The new Anderson Center for Environmental Sciences, which includes a renovated Moore Lab of Zoology and a renewed portion of the adjacent Bioscience building, providing enhanced interdisciplinary teaching, research and exhibition spaces.

•

A new home and expanded support for OXY ARTS, the College’s community-based art center.

•

The Choi Family Music Production Center, including a state-of-the-art recording studio, control room and 16-student music computer lab.

•

Investments in student wellness, including the new campus wide student health promotion program.

•

$37 million to support the Oxy Fund, which serves the immediate and most urgent needs of the College from financial aid and academics to student life and athletics.

•

More than $150 million toward the College’s endowment.

The Oxy Campaign For Good is already making an impact on the student experience and will benefit generations of Oxy Tigers to come.

OCCIDENTAL ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2023 This weekend, the Occidental Athletics Hall of Fame welcomes four new inductees into its ranks—its first class since 2019.

Established in 2012, the Hall of Fame honors outstanding achievement in competition, service, dedication, and commitment to Occidental athletics.

Nadine Felix Guest ’70 (Basketball, Softball, and Volleyball)

Under Coach Bill Westphal, the Tigers went 40-15 over two seasons, finishing 10-2 in conference play each season and winning back-to-back SCIAC Championships.

A triple threat in basketball, softball, and volleyball, Nadine made her biggest impact as a point guard in basketball. As a senior, she averaged 25 points a game while shooting better than 50 percent from the floor.

Cresey Stewart Maher ’87 (Track & Field and Cross Country)

Walt Rohlfing ’66 (Swimming and Diving)

A two-sport All-American, Cresey set a national record in the 1,500-meter run at the 1987 Division III track and field championships with a time of 4:27.11. Maher graduated cum laude and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Pi Mu Epsilon and Mortar Board.

As a senior, Walt won the 200 freestyle at the National NAIA Swimming & Diving Championships, setting an NAIA record (1:50.7), and finishing second in the 100 freestyle.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES AT OXY The College has a full, on-site alcohol license. The license requires that Campus Dining be the sole provider and server of all alcohol on campus.

Alcohol is not permitted in common spaces unless as part of a registered College event.
