At Oregon Coast Community College, we pride ourselves on Shaping the Future Through Learning. Through the many offerings showcased in this edition of Catch The Wave, we strive to help you shape your own future, whatever your dreams may be.

We look forward to this new school year, during which your community college will take its first official step on the long road (seven years) to independent accreditation, by filing our Application for Consideration to be heard by the Northwest Commission of Colleges and Universities at their January 2016 hearing.

Meanwhile, we’re rolling Dr. Birgitte Ryslinge out new services across the President, Oregon Coast Community College occc.president@occc.cc.or.us county this year. Beginning in the Fall term, we will offer the two-year Associate of Science Oregon Transfer in Business degree at our North County Center in Lincoln City.

The College is also introducing a new Early College program, which will offer college-ready high school students the opportunity to take up to three college courses at one of our sites, absolutely tuition free. There will be new science courses,

including Physics, offered in Newport this year, and Calculus is coming to the Lincoln City Center this Fall. We are exploring options for what can be added to our Waldport site, which will host events including an SBDC family business workshop this term, in addition to OCCC’s Medical Assistant program.

Created by public vote in 1987, we are Lincoln County’s college. Our purpose is to meet the needs of community members such as you. Whether your goal is to take a single class for enrichment (Japanese language or shellfish ecology, anyone?), or to complete your first two years of a Bachelor’s degree , or to grow your business by working with our Small Business Development Center, we can help you realize your goals.

We know you will be pleased with our awardwinning faculty, small class sizes, beautiful facilities, and extraordinary support services.

I am so pleased to be working at OCCC, and to plan for the future of the college together with our wonderful students, faculty and staff. We see great things ahead, including growth of the college, expanded offerings, serving more students and learners, and helping to further develop a college-going culture in our county. Introduction to Japanese Language

Ideal for travelers – and anyone with a yearning to learn – this class will focus on basic Japanese conversation to get around during a short stay in Japan, or just for personal enrichment.

The course contains conversational practice and basic cultural understanding. Besides nine sessions for the language exercises, there will be one hands-on experience (cooking) included. The instructor, Sachiko Otsuki (pictured at right), is the curator at the Pacific Maritime and Heritage Center in Newport.

Spanish for Beginners

Community Education Classes

Students in this non-credit introductory class will learn the basic vocabulary needed for essential communication such as the alphabet, personal information, everyday basic questions (where is the bathroom, etc.?), numbers and more. There will be music from different Latin countries, games and a guest speaker so the students will have the opportunity to use their new skills.

Crafting, in Spanish

The class will be taught in Spanish (all levels). There will be a selection of activities for different interests such as card making, wine glass painting / decorating, glass plant starters, Christmas tree ornaments and more. It will be an “upcycling” class, so many of the crafts will be made from materials that the students and the instructor will bring. Presented just after Thanksgiving, this will be a fun way to get a jump-start on your Holiday season.

Disaster Preparedness for the Pacific Northwest

This fall, Oregon Coast Community College brings back its popular two-night disaster preparedness class. For the first time, the course will be offered at the Central Campus in Newport, as well as the North Center in Lincoln City. Taught by North Lincoln Fire and Rescue District Captain Jim Kusz, the course is designed to take the panic and paranoia out of planning; while it discusses in frank detail the threats facing the Oregon Coast, from damaging storms and power outages to the looming threat of the Cascadia Subduction Zone, Capt. Kusz uses humor and a superb level of preparedness skill and background to walk participants through the simple steps they can take to be prepared for an emergency, wherever they may be when one should occur. The program is offered free of charge, thanks to Oregon Coast Community College and the North Lincoln Fire and Rescue District. Pre-registration is required.

Basic Computer Skills

Designed specifically for people with limited experience with computers and questions about everything from proper usage of the mouse to how to navigate online, upload and download images, and perform other functions, this class is taught informally and in a manner responsive to the needs of the particular students in the class. Mona Martin, longtime Lincoln County entrepreneur and computer tutor, leads the course in both Newport and Lincoln City.

Estate Plans: Wills and Trusts

Will your estate plan cause hurt and dissent in your family?

This short course will address fundamental issues involved in creating an effective estate plan. The class will cover the strategies needed for effective management of assets as we age (including during periods of incapacity), and guidelines for the appropriate disposition of assets upon death. Content of the class involves a discussion of the use of wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and health care directives. We will also consider questions of planning that include IRAs and other retirement assets.

Handgun Safety

This course will cover the basic fundamentals of safety, the cardinal rules, and responsible operation of a handgun. After completion of the course, you will receive a certificate to take to the Sheriff ’s office to apply for your concealed weapons certificate. Do not bring any firearms to class.

Beginning & Intermediate Acoustic Guitar

In this informally structured class, students will receive group instruction as well as one on one instruction at times according to musical interests and level of ability. Kite Building & Painting

Wild Mussel Harvesting, with Preparation Tips

In this engaging and entertaining class, participants will utilize a proven no-sew method to create their own unique, durable Tyvek kites. The process includes design, concept and painting. Materials fee ($10-$30) will depend on complexity and size of finished kite. Taught by an Oregon Coast kite company owner, Ronda Brewer, the class promises to be fun, interesting, creative, and stimulating. The class is to be held just before the Lincoln City Fall Kite Festival, and participants will be invited to bring their creations to the beach to join in the festivities!

Creative Writing: Short Story Writing

Discover the tasty bounty that’s right outside your window, and learn all about harvesting and preparing fresh, live, wild mussels on the Oregon Coast. The class meets on the beach at NW 15th Street in Lincoln City, where Paul Robertson walks participants through the process of identifying, selecting and removing the choicest specimens. All participants must show their current Oregon Shellfish License at the class to harvest (licenses available at Eleanor’s Undertow and Bi-Mart in Lincoln City, among other locations).

Students will read twelve modern short stories, many written by authors who currently live or have lived in the Pacific Northwest. Students will use elements in these stories such as characters, settings, tones, etc., to inspire their own short stories. Each student will have the PAUL ROBERTSON (L) opportunity to produce three short stories and have these stories critiqued and discussed in a workshop setting. Students will learn about literary techniques, writing theories and writing styles and will be able to discuss the use of these devices in their writing and the writing of others. View the syllabus.

Understand the principles behind additive 3-D printing. Learn the basics of this emerging OCCC Central County Campus in Newport technology and discuss its many applications, both present and future. This is just the class for you! Participants will learn how birds behave so it will be easier to find, watch, and identify the type you are seeing. Bird identification, adaptations, and habitat will be introduced. Birds of the Oregon Coast will be our focus during this 2 week class. Participants will have access to bird guides and binoculars and will learn how to use them. The final day of class will be a field trip to identify birds in the area.

Shellfish Ecology

Learn about the ecology of local shellfish species in this fun, two-session class, which features time in the classroom as well as a trip to the tidal flats near Newport. Course material will focus on the habitat, lifestyle and development of crabs, shrimp and clams commonly encountered on the Oregon Coast A brief introduction to fisheries for these invertebrates will also be covered.

This 6-hour course will include lecture and laboratory components along with a short trip to the tidal flats. Students will be required to walk for an hour in potentially inclement weather. Boots and rain gear will be needed.

De-Printing Nature on Fabric: Taking color out with bleach and natural items KATELYN BOSLEY

The Art of Seaweed Pressing

Learn about our local marine algae and make lovely designs with seaweeds dried on paper. These pressed seaweeds can be used for cards, or framed for display, or for a herbarium collection. The forms, colors, and textures of our local red, brown and green seaweeds lend themselves beautifully to this Victorian art form. An additional $15 materials fee is required for this class.

Shell Printing

This is the ultimate beach experience and anyone can do it! You will be using acrylics on different papers, pressing the shells, then using metallic washes, creating many pleasing results. You’ll finish by carving your own CHOP (stamps) and you’ll even learn a few Japanese phrases. Later you can print these wonderful works of art and use them in collages, fabric, book covers, wrapping paper, note cards and more!

Students should bring a lunch and beverage, as well as: pen and pencil, apron, newsprint, and (if you have them) specialty rice papers, linoleum cutter, acrylic paints and brushes and shells.

Nature printing is the process of deriving a print from a natural object with the use of pigments, inks, dyes, or chemicals on cloth, paper or other surfaces. In this twist of nature printing, a bleach product is used to remove color from natural fiber fabrics., sometimes called deprinting.

We’ll use leaves or shells as the carrier, giving us the details of the object. The bleach reacts with dyes and changes or removes all color. The resulting tones can often be a surprise.

Using a commercial product like Soft Scrub with Bleach®, we apply the solution to the plant or shell, and place it on the fabric. The bleach reacts with the dyes in the natural fibers to remove the color permanently in the shape of the object.

You may want to remove most of the color from your shirt, or make an accent print, or just cover a stain on a treasured shirt. We can also block out sections of a shirt with masking tape and deprint inside the shape. Quilters love this process because it gives fantastic designs on quilting fabric. Because the patterns are bleached, these pieces never fade.

This is a fun and easy class anyone can do. After all, who hasn’t accidentally gotten a bleach stain on clothing?

Seatauqua

The Seatauqua (see-TOK-wa) was a series of workshops, lectures and excursions that ran for decades in Newport. Coordinated

by Oregon Sea Grant, the programs encouraged chautauqua-style discussions by all participants about arts, sciences, coastal ecology and more.

Last year, with the help of Heather Fortner, Maryann Bozza and others, Oregon Coast Community College and the Hatfield Marine Science Center began the process of reviving Seatauqua, with special classes and workshops.

Water Media

Beginning Oil Painting

Watercolor & Acrylic Over the course of this 10-week class, students will experiment with a variety of painting techniques to create original works of art. We will study composition and design, color, theory, creating an area of dominance, painting light and water, free and easy loose painting, and working with an assortment of media.

In this one-day class, students will learn fundamental painting skills and complete a painting of 18 by 24 inches in acrylics and/or oils in this one-day workshop. Students work from a still-life, or outdoors if weather permits. Students are required to bring their own supplies, canvas and/or board easel, if they own one.

Free ‘Jobseekers’ workshop returns for the Fall Are you preparing to apply for work locally or in other areas? Are you ready to do the research needed to apply? Do you feel prepared to interview and present

yourself in the best possible light? Here is an opportunity to learn the skills that will make you more competitive in the job market.

This series of four workshops was created for those looking forward to applying for employment. The class will meet from 4 pm to 6 pm on Tuesdays and Fridays, Oct. 6 to 16. The workshops are presented by the Small Business Development Center at Oregon Coast Community College and the Rotary Club of Newport.

Each of the 12 participants will be mentored and supported as they gain a better understanding of completing a job application, writing a winning resumé and cover letter, and more. Topics will also include dressing for the interview, presentation skills, and practice interviews.

This series is available to OCCC students, referrals from prospective employers, and the community at large. You need not be an OCCC student to apply. Best of all, this program is provided absolutely free. However, program size is limited to twelve participants. To apply for one of the 12 spaces, simply call 541-994-4166.

GED Testing Info REGISTERING FOR GED TESTING

• Go to the GED Testing Services website at GED.com • Sign up for My GED. • Watch the short tutorial video for information.

MAKING AN APPOINTMENT ONLINE FOR TESTING

• Locate a testing center.

• Provide the information requested.

• Check the testing schedule.

• Choose an appointment day and time.

• Pay for the test (credit or debit card, voucher).

GED TESTING FEES

• The fee for each test is $38 • Testing candidates will be able to take two re-tests per subject area (8 total). The re-take fee will be $10. All initial and retake fees are paid when a testing appointment is made online.

ARRIVING FOR YOUR TEST

• Please arrive fifteen minutes before your scheduled test appointment.

• Please bring a valid government issued picture I.D. and a second I.D. with a signature.

• Check in at the Student Services counter.

• Read and sign the Candidate Rules Agreement.

• Wait and listen for your name to be called.

FOR 16- AND 17-YEAR-OLD STUDENTS

Candidates 16 and 17 years of age must provide proof of one of the following in order to take the GED test: • A Release from Compulsory Attendance from last high school attended.

• Be a student in the GED Options program through LBL/ESD. • Married.

• Legally emancipated.

WHAT TO BRING

Candidates should refrain from bringing to the testing center large items such as backpacks, purses, laptops and other electronics, notebooks and books. Your personal items must fit in small lockers provided to you during testing. You will be asked to remove large watches and other large jewelry before entering the room.

The only things candidates need to bring to the testing center are their ID and car keys (if applicable).

This year, the Oregon Coast Community College Small Business Development Center is pleased to launch “Doing Business in Lincoln County,” a new jumping-off point for would-be entrepreneurs and business owners. If you’re considering starting a business on the Oregon Coast, are simply curious about how a typical business gets started, or if you’ve recently launched a business here, this is a class you shouldn’t miss. This four-week course features 12 hours of instruction time, in four threehour sessions and lab time of four three-hour sessions, to build a website with hands-on help from the instructor.

Have you always heard friends tell you, “your strawberry jam is the best I’ve ever had!” Is your grandmother’s famous celery-seed salad dressing just too good not to share? Are you ready to take your favorite recipe to market?

In this class, led by Lucinda Whitacre, you’ll learn the fundamentals needed to master and achieve your goals.

In the first session, you will answer the question, “What’s the big idea?”

You’ll learn to check out the competition, to find out who your target market is and what they will pay for your special delight. You will also get feedback on what you need to do to get this going, as well as finding out some of the basic rules you need to follow and how to determine what comes next.

The second session will explore state, federal and local rules and regulations.

Where can you make your product? What kind of packaging should you use? What kind of logo and label would work for your customers?

Creating content with Google apps

Enhance Your Family Business Through Social Media Pat Frishkoff and Misty Lambrecht have put together a jointly-taught class through Oregon Coast Community College’s Small Business Development Center.

It will take place at the College’s South County Center, at 3120 Crestline Drive (next door to the new Waldport High School). Class runs from 1 until 4, and costs $40 per person.

Frishkoff was founder of OSU’s Austin Family Business Program, and served as its director for 17 years. Misty is coordinator of Oregon Coast Community College’s Small Business Management Program. Pat has made her way to the coast twice to take classes from Misty; “She is the best,” Pat said. “In ways, our teaching styles are equally wild. In other ways they differ. You must come to determine how.”

It’s never too late for college!

65+ residents receive FREE tuition for OCCC credit classes The pursuit of knowledge is a lifelong process, and OCCC is pleased to offer senior learners the opportunity to enhance new and existing skills through challenging and intellectually stimulating programs. If you are an Oregon resident who is 65 or older, you may be eligible for free or discounted tuition rates.

“As a life long learner and someone very familiar with the high quality of instruction at OCCC,” said Jane Hodgkins, “I was very excited to take advantage of the senior waiver and enroll in an art class this summer. The class has been challenging and it’s inspiring to see the work of my fellow students. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s available for fall term.”

Seniors get free tuition for credit classes when taken for an audit grading option. Auditing is taking a class without receiving a grade or credit. You can only audit a class if there are still seats available on the first day of class. This 100% tuition waiver does not cover lab fees or other class fees. Many classes fill up early, so space is not guaranteed. The only way to secure a spot in a class is to register early and pay full tuition. Auditing students may register for up to eight credits per term.

It’s easy to audit a class at OCCC: 1) Find the credit class you want to audit on pages 12 & 13.

2) Complete the waiver form found at oregoncoastcc.org/tuition-discount-seniors, and bring it to first day of class.

3) Ask the instructor if there is space available in the class, and if the class can be audited.

4) Take the signed form to the front desk at OCCC’s Central Campus or the North County Center.

5) Pay course fees and purchase textbooks and/or other materials not covered by the tuition waiver. That’s all you need to do – except to enjoy your class! *Please note: Instructors determine whether their courses can be audited. Senior Option Waivers cannot be used to: • Take classes for credit that have wait-listed students or displace credit students paying tuition; • Register for classes in limited-entry programs (i.e. Aquarium Science and Nursing)
