While You’re Enjoying this Evening, Take a Moment to Donate to the Foundation
Many of the graduates crossing the stage tonight were supported in their OCCC studies by scholarships provided by the OCCC Foundation, a 501(c)3 devoted to making higher education – and rewarding careers –available to Lincoln County residents, regardless of their means.
Tonight, we ask you to celebrate the donors who made these scholarships possible, and pass it on to the students who will follow in your graduate’s footsteps.
Your donation of any amount – $5, $10, $500, or anything in-between – will ensure the next class of OCCC Sharks has the same opportunity to succeed as did this year ’ s Graduating Class.

Oregon Coast Community College acknowledges that we reside within the ancestral homelands of the Yaquina (Yaqo’n) and Alsea (Wusi’n) Tribes, who agreed to cede their lands to the U S by treaty in 1855 Much of their homelands, as well as parts of Siletz, Salmon River, Nestucca Bands of Tillamook, and Siuslaw territories, were established as The Siletz Reservation for the many western Oregon Tribes to move into in accordance with treaty agreements and federal policy. However, these treaties were repeatedly violated, and those lands were forcibly taken from them piece by piece, mostly without compensation
Today, those tribal descendants are represented by The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians We are honored for the opportunity to teach, learn, and work on their ancestral lands We also recognize and appreciate the ongoing contributions they make to the community, Oregon Coast Community College, and the world
LandAcknowledgement AcademicRegalia
The custom of recognizing scholastic accomplishment through distinctive dress and ceremony began in the Middle Ages and has been adopted by academic institutions throughout the world. American academic regalia developed from English traditions originating at Cambridge and Oxford and has been in continuous use in the United States since Colonial times
The faculty member with the longest tenure at OCCC is designated as the Faculty Marshal The Faculty Marshal carries the College gonfalon, or heraldic banner, as they lead the procession of graduates The colorful hoods worn by master’s and doctoral graduates represent the specific degree earned and the degree-granting institution. In addition, the variety of regalia in the faculty procession arises from each university having its own distinguishing customs
Members of Phi Theta Kappa, the community college honor society, wear blue and gold honor cords, along with a gold stole and tassel, to signify their achievement of a 3 5 or above grade point average Highest honors go to those who have achieved 3 75 or above and is signified by the white cord The white and blue or purple, teal, and gold cord is given to members of the Student Nurses Organization. A rainbow tassel is worn by members of the Gender Sexuality Alliance to acknowledge and celebrate the LGBTQ+ Community Leadership of OCCC’s Associated Student Government wear light blue honor stoles Veterans of the U S Armed Forces wear a red, white, and blue cord honoring their service to our country. The medal worn by one graduate this year signifies their selection as a member of the All-Oregon Community College Academic Team
