We offer opportunities to older students, high school students, students right out of high school, veterans, working students, parents, and lifelong learners. We enroll students interested in transferring to universities such as Oregon State, as well as those seeking terminal two-year degrees, one-year certificates, retraining in new skills, ESOL and GEDs.

While we work to move steadily towards independent accreditation, OCCC students still benefit from our accreditation through Portland Community College, ensuring our students are just as able to transfer credits earned at Oregon Coast Community College towards their eventual four-year degrees as their fellow community college students in Portland or elsewhere in Oregon.

Who knew additive printing could be so addictive? Understand the principles behind additive 3-D printing. Learn the basics of this emerging technology and discuss its many applications, both present and future. During the class, a 3-D printer in the classroom will print one or more items to be displayed and discussed before the end of the session.

This 10-week course is an eye-opening interactive experience designed to help the student better understand and control the relationship between one’s own health and success. The use of mobile phones has changed the landscape of our everyday lives. Families can now keep in constant touch with their loved ones no matter where they are at any time of the day or night. New updates in the mobile technology world allow for GPS, data entry, e-mail, fax, linking documents, taking and sharing photographs,making credit card purchases, face booking and Internet access from remote locations.

Anyone that desires to be mobile will need to be competent in the use of all aspects of their personal mobile phone. This free course will help you find free applications and syncing them to your mobile device that will enable you to use your mobile device with ease. This class is for the novice mobile user. Time will be made available for sharing ideas and successes.

Basic Computer Skills Fridays • 1–3 p.m.

This class is for those who simply need to get comfortable using a computer. Perhaps it’s time to finally learn how to quickly get to an email account or website to keep in touch with kids, grandkids or distant relatives. Whatever your reason, this class teaches the basics of computer usage; keyboard, mouse, regular and special keyboard shortcuts. You’ll also learn how to create folders and files.

Estate Plans Wills and Trusts Thursdays • 3 – 5 p.m.

Will your estate plan cause hurt and dissension in your family? This short course will address fundamental issues involved in creating an effective estate plan. The class teaches you the strategies needed for proper management of your assets as you age (including during periods of incapacity), and guidelines for the appropriate disposition of assets upon death. Content of the class involves a discussion of the use of wills, trusts, power of attorney, and health care directives. We will also consider questions of planning that include IRAs and other retirement assets.

Students in this class will learn about compositional guidelines, how to select and set camera settings, as well as how to manage light and exposure to create pleasing and interesting images. The course will also provide plenty of tips on shooting great landscapes, fog, fireworks, pets, sports, interiors, macro (close-ups) and even how to take eBay photos.

Join us for this inaugural offering of a new Self-Publishing Workshop for Writers and Authors, led by Steve Sparks.

This workshop is centered on the value of real-time learning and collaboration by students, facilitated by the instructor.

Students will have ownership for group leadership, collaboration, preparation, actions, follow-up, and outcomes. The instructor will ensure that the class stays focused to achieve results, and learning outcomes students desire to achieve as a team. The instructor will provide broader leadership and professional input in a deliberate manner as a facilitator. The workshop will not be a lecture format. “My role as the instructor is listening and stimulating creative discussion and team work,” Sparks told OCCC. “The following would be an outline of the course, but would evolve based on the needs of the students.”

This spring, Oregon Coast Community College brings back its popular two-night disaster preparedness class. Taught by North Lincoln Fire and Rescue District Captain Jim Kusz, the course is designed to take the panic and paranoia out of planning; while it discusses in frank detail the threats facing the Oregon Coast, from damaging storms and power outages to the looming threat of the Cascadia Subduction Zone, Capt. Kusz uses humor and a superb level of preparedness training and background to walk participants through the simple steps they can take to be prepared for an emergency, wherever they may be when one should occur. The program is offered free of charge, thanks to Oregon Coast Community College and the North Lincoln Fire and Rescue District. Pre-registration is required.

Seatauqua Mermaid and Fish Collage

Anyone wanting to play, create and relieve stress is welcome to this class, and anyone can do this! “You will see things differently, as in all my classes,” says instructor Marion Moir. “I will help with the composition, then it’s like being a kid again: cutting, tearing, gluing, and sparkling.You will learn about color, textures and pure fun!”

ARTS | SCIENCE | CREATIVITY | FUN

Nature Printed Journal

This class teaches the use of items from nature such as leaves, flowers, shells, seaweed and bark to create pieces of art on heavy rag paper, then turn it all into a handmade journal. This class introduces the art of nature printing using a range of media, including acrylics, paper dyes, block printing ink, embossing powers and matte medium.

Students will create an assortment of prints on sheets of paper and then do a simple binding with a cover to create a journal, suitable for writing of additional artwork.

A hands-on survey of the uses of local seaweed. In this workshop students have the opportunity to make pressed specimens of beautiful red seaweeds, create unique beads and a rattle from the stipe and float of kelp, make small sculptural knots from various seaweeds, and then sample several dishes made with seaweeds, including Porphya (nori) and bull kelp. Prepare to be amazed and inspired at the versatility and life history of these extraordinary plants.

Celebrating Oregon’s Shellfish Every day Lincoln County residents drive past tidal flats brimming with tasty clams, or rocky outcroppings covered with delectable mussels, on their way to the grocery store. This two-session class will take you out on the beach in Lincoln City, one day to harvest fresh mussels and another to dig for clams. All participants must have a valid Oregon Shellfish License.

• Go to the GED Testing Services website at gedtestingservice.com or GED.com • Sign up for My GED. • Watch the short video for information.

MAKING AN APPOINTMENT FOR TESTING

• Locate a testing center.

• Provide the information requested.

• Check the testing schedule.

• Choose an appointment day and time.

• Pay for the test (credit or debit card, voucher).

GED TESTING FEES

• The fee for each test is $38 • Testing candidates will be able to take two re-tests per subject area (8 total). The re-take fee will be $10. All initial and re-take fees are paid when a testing appointment is made.

ARRIVING FOR YOUR TEST

• Please arrive fifteen minutes before your scheduled test appointment.

• Please bring a valid government issued picture I.D. and a second I.D. with a signature.

• Check in at the Student Services counter.

WHAT TO BRING

Candidates should refrain from bringing to the testing center large items such as backpacks, purses, laptops and other electronics, notebooks and books. Your personal items must fit in small lockers provided to you during testing. You will be asked to remove large watches and other large jewelry before entering the room.

The only things candidates need to bring to the testing center are their ID and car keys (if applicable).

This winter, the Oregon Coast Community College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) hosted one of the Lincoln City Chamber of Commerce’s twicemonthly luncheons. SBDC staff regularly attend meetings of chambers of commerce across the county.

Later this summer, on July 8, the SBDC and Oregon Coast will host another chamber luncheon at its North County Center in Lincoln City. This one will feature a BBQ picnic and an outdoor program. To make early reservations, call 541-994-3070.

Ready to earn your Real Estate Broker’s License, like Ann Irvin (pictured above)? Do what Ann did, and enroll in this class. You can take cheaper programs online, but ask around – often, students take months or even years to complete such online programs. This weekly class keeps you focused on the work you need to do in-between sessions to get ready for Oregon’s test in just 10 short weeks. This spring, Oregon Coast Community College will bring back its 10-week Real Estate Pre-License course, a course designed to help aspiring Real Estate brokers launch their careers here on the Central Coast.

The class meets the 150-hour Oregon Real Estate Agency requirement to qualify to take the Oregon State Real Estate Broker License exam.

“Once a student completes this course,” said OCCC Small Business Development Center Director Dave Price, “they will be able to submit their broker application to the Oregon Real Estate Agency and they’ll be able to take the Oregon State/PSI Real Estate Broker exam.” Be ready to make the most of the summer season to come, with this short, intense spring-term class.

Free ‘Jobseekers’ workshop returns Are you preparing to apply for work locally or in other areas? Are you ready to do the research needed to apply? Do you feel prepared to interview and present yourself in the best possible light? Here is an opportunity to learn the skills that will make you more competitive in the job market.

This series of four workshops was created for those looking forward to applying for employment. The class will meet from 4 pm to 6 pm on Tuesdays and Fridays, April 19 to 29. The workshops are presented by the Small Business Development Center at Oregon Coast Community College and the Rotary Club of Newport.

Each of the 12 participants will be mentored and supported as they gain a better understanding of completing a job application, writing a winning resumé and cover letter, and more. Topics will also include dressing for the interview, presentation skills, and practice interviews.

This series is available to OCCC students, referrals from prospective employers, and the community at large. You need not be an OCCC student to apply. Learn how to navigate through the QuickBooks software like a pro. You will learn the software “big picture,” version choices, capabilities, chart of accounts, backing up, keyboard shortcuts, memorized transactions, pre-set forms, customizing other forms, and some trouble-shooting. Learn how to record the various transactions you have with customers and have QuickBooks give you understandable reports. You will also learn ways to understand your accounts receivable, aging reports, record payments on account, record recurring sales invoices, and analyze customer statistics.

3—QUICKBOOKS VENDOR TRANSACTIONS TUES., MAY 10 ($49) Learn how to record the various transactions you have with vendors and have QuickBooks give you understandable reports. You will also learn ways to understand your accounts payable, cash flow needs, and cost reports.

4–QUICKBOOKS PAYROLL TUES., MAY 17 ($49)

Using the QuickBooks Pro desktop software, you will learn how to process payroll checks, payroll taxes, payroll liabilities and payroll reporting. Also, learn how to track time using the software and how this time can be billed to customers. QuickBooks Online Payroll and other options will be discussed. This will be a hands-on course with active discussion; you should bring a notepad and be familiar with operating a Windows computer.

5—QUICKBOOKS FINANCIAL REPORTS TUES., MAY 24 ($49)

Learn how to record the various transactions you have in your business, reconcile your checking accounts, reconcile your loans, and provide your banker with accurate reports. You will also learn how to understand your Profit and Loss Report and what a Balance Sheet tells you. Finally, you will learn what you need to do at year-end for governmental reporting and business analysis.

This class will cover advanced skills using the software program QuickBooks Pro. We will begin with preferences and include skills to record barter transactions, handle & report down payments, retainers, and advance deposits, credit card fees, void transactions, selling fixed assets, inventory transactions, customizing forms, setting up a new company, utilize departments, classes and clean up old data. This will be a hands-on course with active discussion; students should bring a notepad, have a working knowledge of the software and business, and be familiar with operating a Windows computer. This spring, the Oregon Coast Community College Small Business Development Center is pleased to continue “Doing Business in Lincoln County,” a jumping-off point for would-be entrepreneurs and business owners. If you’re considering starting a business on the Oregon Coast, are simply curious about how a typical business gets started, or if you’ve recently launched a business here, this is a class you shouldn’t miss. The class will be held on the third Wednesday of each month, from 10 a.m. to noon.

This four-week course features 12 hours of instruction time, in four three-hour sessions and lab time of four three-hour sessions, to build a website with hands-on help from the instructor.

It all starts with a COMPASS placement test.

1) Take the COMPASS College Placement Test Call 541-867-8501 (Central Campus) or 541-996-6222 (North Center) to schedule an appointment to take the COMPASS BEN KAUFMANN college placement test to discover which reading, writing and math courses are the best match for your academic level. After the test, you will schedule an appointment to attend a New Student Orientation/Advising Session (see #3, below).

2) Transfer Students If you have previous college credit, call 541-867-8501 to schedule an appointment with an academic advisor.

3) Attend a New Student Orientation/Advising Session (Required for all new credit students.) There you will: • be advised for your first-term class schedule • learn about OCCC policies, term deadlines, transfer and career and technical programs • learn to read the class schedule and online catalog, and be cleared to register • learn about different options to consider when determining how to pay for college • learn how to register and sign up for your myOCCC online account.
