Like colleges around the globe, Oregon Coast Community College has been Zooming classes and meetings for well over a year. We are excited to announce that our doors are open and, per OHA and CDC guidelines, face coverings are optional in OCCC facilities. a cetacean migration celebration!

All in Our Backyard: Discovering Oregon’s Whales Spotting flukes and spouts is literally just scratching the surface of what our local ocean has in store for the serious observer. In this class, you will learn about the diverse species of whales, dolphins, and porpoises found along the Oregon Coast. The course will explore natural history and will offer tips on identification and best methods for whale watching.

Witness an Amazing Journey of Survival: From the Arctic to Baja and Back In this one-hour workshop, you'll discover the remarkable migratory patterns of the gray whales that pass by our shores twice a year. Participants will learn about the species and its history, as well as threats these mammals face along with various conservation efforts underway to support them.

Aquariums 101 & AQS Tour Home aquariums are a great way to add life and color to your home. Watching an aquarium full of fish has even been shown to lower blood pressure! But like any hobby, aquarium keeping is not something to rush into without doing some research. This class will discuss different types of aquariums commonly kept by hobbyists, the best sources for aquarium equipment, animals, and plants. We will also discuss common mistakes many beginning aquarium keepers make and how to avoid them. The class will meet in the Aquarium Science (AQS) Building and will include a tour of the facility.

Community Education Classes Fly Tying & Fly Fishing Break through the barriers of fear and myth with this handson, basic approach to a pastime both rewarding and addictive. Learn how to assemble feathers and furs on hooks to fool and catch fish. Solve the riddle of when, where, and how to use which fly patterns. (Starter tools and materials on loan from Central Coast Fly Fishers.) Get expert help choosing your own gear. Practice casting and presenting wet and dry flies. Your instructor is an experienced fly tyer and fly fisher.

Beginning Guitar Instruction Nobody liked the pandemic, but those guitar students who turn out term after term to spend time with our charming, talented, and "totes-chill" guitar instructor really hated it. They did not want to miss the chance to hang out in the classroom once a week with Richard Paris, to be taught how to play their favorite jams. Now, once again, they can – and so can you! In this class, beginning and intermediate students receive group instruction as well as one-on-one attention, according to musical interests and level of ability. This method keeps students interested, which is key to maintain motivation.

Birding Basics Do you find yourself listening to an odd chirp while walking or gardening? Are you fascinated by the random rustlings in the bushes? Do you notice and enjoy the birds in your world, but wish you knew more about these clever and busy neighbors?

This is just the class for you! You will learn how birds behave so it will be easier to find, watch, and identify the type you are seeing. Bird identification, adaptations, and habitat will be introduced. Birds of the Oregon Coast will be our focus during this two-week class. Participants will have access to bird guides and binoculars and will learn how to use them. The final class will be a field trip to identify birds in the area.

Community Education Watersheds, Water Quality and Salmon Explore the interactions of our coastal watersheds and the fish that call them home in this introductory lecture and field trip series. Thanks to a partnership with Oregon State University and our local watershed council, this series will draw from the expertise of three lecturers, culminating with a tour of some local watershed restoration sites. Learn about the interplay between streams, forests, and other landscapes, and how those interactions affect water quality and life below the surface. The course is aimed at newcomers and all parties interested in learning more about our local ecology and the needs and efforts to protect it. No scientific experience necessary.

Anadromous species of fish in coastal Oregon and their habitats The class will cover life histories of Pacific salmon, trout and lamprey, species distributions along the Oregon coast and their habitat components, such as water, substrate, instream structures, and riparian vegetation.

Will your estate plan cause hurt and dissension in your family? This short course will address fundamental issues involved in creating an effective estate plan. The class teaches you the strategies needed for effective management of your assets as you age (including during periods of incapacity), and guidelines for the appropriate disposition of assets upon death.

Content of the class involves a discussion of the use of wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and health care directives. We will also consider questions of planning that include IRA's and other retirement assets.

Healthy diet, healthy planet

Sleep well, be well

Diseases which plague our populations like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes are quite often foodborn illnesses which are directly correlated with our Western diet of rich, animal-based and/or processed foods. These foods are virtually absent in a Whole-Food, Plant-Based (WFPB) diet which emphasizes whole (living) plant-foods.

Many studies have shown that whole plant foods have the potential to not only prevent but reverse or improve these common diseases and promote weight loss. In addition, the animal agriculture and processed food industries are by far the most environmentally destructive industries from every sector: land use, water pollution, soil degradation, air pollution, deforestation, oceanic deletion/die-offs, and oxygen depletion. A plant-based lifestyle can reduce one's eco-footprint and impact on our over-burdened healthcare system.

This class will debunk modern myths about nutrition, show evidence of the healing power of plants, and provide practical methods to put you on a pathway towards plant-based living.

Each of our bodily systems rely upon our ability to get adequate sleep to function properly. And, quality sleep occurs when we have a functional balance within our bodily systems.

Most sleep disorders are symptoms of a disruption within one or more of these bodily systems. This class explores many common sleep disorders and their origins. By modifying our lifestyle choices, we can achieve a balance between good sleep and overall wellness.

Zen Meditation Meditation is now mainstream and is being practiced in different places in many ways. The meditation that will be taught here has its roots in Zen practice. In our everyday lives we can see how complex life can be and how we need to have a place to relax and catch our breath sometimes. In this class, you will learn that this place of rest already exists in our own bodies.

The most important point in this class is to learn how to simply sit, and be very comfortable and restful. It is a practice and tool that can be applied to any life endeavor.

Gyotaku is the Japanese art of fish printing.

At its core, Gyotaku uses the actual fish to achieve a detailed image of the specimen.

During this introductory two-hour session, students will gain an appreciation of the art's history, print a variety of fish species, and learn techniques to paint fish eyes.

This workshop is technique-driven and focuses on refining each print through critiquing and reviewing each print.

Participants should come with a spirit of adventure and anticipation.

Surf's Up! Mosaic exterior art

Paddle into the art of mosaic with this mini surfboard-shaped sign, providing a whimsical splash of color year-round on your house or garden fence. This course is suitable for beginners, but ambitious students can opt to include up to four house numbers as part of the design. Learn exterior mosaic technique and materials, and use of a simple glass-cutting tool. We will grout your projects in class during the second session. Templates, all materials and tools (for in-studio use) provided.

Tiny Mosaic Landscape Intermediate mosaic artists can create a diminutive coastal landscape in stained glass mosaic, 8-inches mosaics by joanne daschel square. Hone your glass-cutting chops on several shapes of glass tesserae (the pieces of a mosaic) while learning some fundamental design and color skills. We will use a direct technique that doesn't require grouting, but you'll get a grout demonstration in case you want to do that at home. Templates, all materials and tools (for in-studio use) provided.

Oil Painting Using the Wet-on-Wet Method

General Drawing Skills

Learn how to paint an oil painting using the wet-on-wet method. This method begins with painting the entire canvas with a light coat of oil paint for an easy blending technique.

Learn how easy it is to blend and detail as you go, even if you currently do not have any drawing capabilities.

New or returning to drawing and art making? This course will help facilitate fundamental drawing skills that can be used to have fun, make fine art drawings, and to prep for painting projects. We will go over tone, perspective, basic design and composition as well drawing from life. Recommended tools: a basic drawing kit, ruler and a pad of drawing paper is a good idea. A #2 pencil and printer paper works, too.

Painting with Watercolor and Acrylics Students will learn and practice skills in painting in two mediums: watercolor and acrylic paints. Gentle Yoga This class flows at a gentle pace and focuses on breathing, relaxation, and a variety of movements for stability and mobility. Develop keener body awareness through the use of fluid movements and gentle stretching.

Topical Herbal Medicine Making Botanical infused oils act to extract and preserve the medicinal qualities of herbs, providing a convenient and pleasurable form of topical application. This is a hands-on educational experience. A discussion on which plants to utilize, and their medicinal properties will be included. We will begin by making an herbal infused medicinal oil with local wild and/or organically 'garden' grown plants. This medicinal oil can be used as a massage oil, and/or crafted into a salve, cream, balm, 'butter' or bar. This class will transform our herbal oil into a luscious body cream that is super nourishing for healing and protecting the skin. Course Spotlight: Physics sequence (PH201-PH203) PH201-203 is a three-term sequence which provides an algebra-based approach to physics.

Physics 201 focuses on motion, kinematics, forces, energy and momentum. Torque and rotation are also included in 201 but revisited in 202 as well. PH 202 focuses on the study of rigidbody rotation, heat, thermodynamics, waves, sound, and light. In 203, the focus shifts primarily to electricity and magnetism with some instructional time focused on ray and wave optics. As the courses are algebra-based, a pre-requisite of MTH 112 Trigonometry is required. The course is presented in partnership with Southwestern Oregon Community College.

Student Learning Outcomes for PH 201 include: • Apply knowledge of linear motions, forces, energy, and circular motion to explain natural physical processes and related technological advances.

• Use vectors to describe motion and forces in 2 and 3 dimensions • Use an understanding of algebraic mathematics along with physical principles to effectively solve problems encountered in everyday life, further study in science, and in the professional world.

• Testing candidates will be able to take two re-tests per subject area (8 total). The retest fee is $10. All initial and retest fees are paid when a testing appointment is made.

Arriving for Your Test • Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled test appointment.

• Please bring a valid government issued picture I.D. with a signature.

For 16- and 17-Year-Old Students Candidates 16 and 17 years of age must provide proof of one of the following in order to take the GED test: • A Release from Compulsory Attendance from last high school attended.

• Be a student in the Options program.

• Married or legally emancipated.

What to Bring Candidates should refrain from bringing to the testing center large items such as backpacks, purses, laptops and other electronics, and books. Your personal items must fit in small lockers provided to you during testing. You will be asked to remove large watches and other large jewelry before entering the room. Real Estate Property Managers Course

Have you tried studying independently (and alone) for your Real Estate Broker’s License test?

All too often, independent study grinds on for months and months longer than you planned. This class is designed to keep you and your classmates on track, week in and week out, as you work as a group and independently towards preparing to successfully take your Real Estate Broker License test. Start in September and take your test before the end of Fall!

There are definitely cheaper independent study programs available. This course, though, proves the reliable axiom that one gets what one pays for. The first class will start Thursday, September 30 and will meet each Thursday night from 5:308:30 for 10 weeks. December 9 will be the last Thursday class, and there will be one Saturday class on December 11 from 9-5.

The Saturday class is a review day.

This course introduces the Oregon real estate property manager to licensing laws and rules including statutes within ORS696 pertaining to property management and OAR863. The course is designed to get you prepared to take the State of Oregon Property Manager License Exam. This is the fastest way to qualify to take the exam, which covers the role of property managers, tenant relations, fair housing, lease agreements and more. You must attend all evening class sessions and have online capacity to complete the self-study portion of this course. Students who pass this course are prepared to take the proctored Oregon Property Manager License exam, which is a required step to becoming a licensed property manager through the State. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to describe real estate laws and rules that protect the Oregon consumer in need of property management services provided by a licensed property manager.
