‘Darkness to Light’ training
Learn to recognize signs of abuse in children The “Stewards of Children ~ Darkness to Light” training is a 2-1/2 hour, evidence-informed prevention solution that teaches community organizations, administrators, staff, parents, educators, and volunteers how to implement effective prevention policies, and to recognize the signs of sexual abuse in children, and how to react responsibly if abuse occurs. This fall, Oregon Coast Community College is hosting this training for the community, as a public service for the Children’s Advocacy Center of Lincoln County.
A Partner in Prevention is an organization or business that has committed the time and effort to educate themselves on how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. An organization receives the D2L Partner in Prevention distinction when they have successfully met the annual guidelines established by D2L. Organizations that train their staff and volunteers create an environment that better protects children. Perpetrators are drawn to places where they
can have easy access to children. An organization that emphasizes prevention through training and appropriate policies is an unwelcoming place for a perpetrator. Training increases staff and volunteer awareness and teaches them to recognize the signs that an opportunity exists for abuse to occur, and the signs that abuse has occurred. It is also critical that staff and volunteers know how to react if they recognize the signs or if a child discloses abuse. Social Media:
Wave Apps:
Are you using the right social media tools for your business? There are many platforms, and each one works differently. Each can provide different results for different types of businesses. They also have different tools, strategies, clients and markets. How can a small business keep up, and find the time to manage their social media effectively – while also having enough time to, you know, run their business? This class will cover the many changes, updates and functionality of each platform, and how to determine which may work best for your particular business. Even in a world of mass marketing and noise, proper use of social media can help you talk directly to clients when they are in the market for your product. This class will highlight changes in social media platforms like: • Periscope and Facebook Live • Facebook target marketing • Instagram contests • Twitter and Twitter leads • LinkedIn: Marketing, groups, jobs and business pages • Content management and time-saving tricks
Have you been doing your books by hand, on a spreadsheet or not at all? Is QuickBooks too expensive or too complicated for your small business? Wave Apps offers a free online cloud-based solution for small business owners. This class will of Wave Apps services such as generating the reports needed for loans, taxes and business performance evaluation. Wave Apps works with your checking account with direct downloads from most banks. Wave Apps works from mobile devices, allowing you to generate receipts on the road, invoice on the job site, and take credit cards for a fee of 2.9%, plus 30 cents. Don’t leave another job site without leaving behind the invoice or collecting a payment. There are no monthly fees for WaveApps, and it is cloud based, so you needn’t be stressed about that old computer you plan to back-up some day. Although Wave Apps does offer some payroll solutions, QuickBooks is still recommended for larger businesses with retail point-of-sale systems or a larger numbers of employees.

It’s never too late for college! Residents 65 or better receive FREE tuition for OCCC credit classes
The pursuit of knowledge is a lifelong process, and OCCC is pleased to offer senior learners the opportunity to enhance new and existing skills through challenging and intellectually stimulating programs. If you are an Oregon resident who is 65 or older, you may be eligible for free or discounted tuition rates. Seniors get free tuition for credit classes when taken for an audit grading option. Auditing is taking a class without receiving a grade or credit. You can only audit a class if there are still seats available on the first day of class. This 100% tuition waiver does not cover lab fees or other class fees. Many classes fill up early, so space is not guaranteed. The only way to secure a spot in a class is to register early and pay full tuition. Auditing students must be registered for eight credits or less per term. Simply find the credit class you want to audit on pages 12-14, then complete the waiver form found at oregoncoastcc.org (or call 541-867-8501 and request one), and bring it to the first day of class. Your instructor will need to approve the audit. After that, you’ll give the signed form to Enrollment Services Coordinator to verify enrollment and waitlist status. Finally, pay course fees and purchase textbooks and/or other materials not covered by the tuition waiver, and you’re ready! For more information about tuition waivers and credit class schedules, call 541-867-8501 or check the schedule in this publication or at oregoncoastcc.org.
